Roland Mouret Shuts Town House Store on Madison Avenue

MOVING ON: Roland Mouret has shut his town house store at 1006 Madison Avenue as part of a wider reorganization of the business, which is streamlining and putting a greater focus on e-commerce, digital and wholesale.
Mouret opened the store, at 77th Street, in September 2016, having relocated from number 952 Madison Avenue. It spanned 1,937 square feet over the ground and mezzanine levels of the Twenties-era building.
“It’s the smallest town house on Madison — it’s unique,” the designer told WWD at the time, adding that he was proud to remain near to The Met Breuer, which focuses on the The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 20th and 21st century collections.
The setting was similar to Mouret’s London flagship, which is located in a red brick town house on Carlos Place, across from The Connaught hotel and just off Mount Street. In London, retail is on the ground floor with design studios and offices on the upper levels. The vast Carlos Place town house remains open.
As reported, Madison Avenue has been struggling with declining rents and high vacancies since the 2008 recession. According to research by Cushman & Wakefield, Madison Avenue availability rose to 27.8 percent at the end of the second quarter of

Madison Avenue Says ‘Let’s Dance,’ Ballet-style

There will be dancing in the streets and tutus in the windows on Madison Avenue in September.
“American Ballet Theatre on Madison Avenue” will be presented by the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District and the classical ballet company from Sept. 20 to 27, to benefit the American Ballet Theater’s Costume Fund and spur shopper traffic on the city’s most luxurious shopping avenue.
Retailers up and down the street will fill their windows and set up in-store exhibits with ballet costumes and memorabilia from ABT’s  archive covering ABT’s 78-year history of performing in New York. Costumes from classic ballets like “Swan Lake” as well as those from new works will be displayed.
“This really is a way to engage the neighborhood and a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with one of the nation’s great cultural institutions,” Matthew Bauer, president of the Madison Avenue BID, told WWD.

For several years, the BID, which covers a stretch from 57th to 86th Streets along Madison Avenue, has staged events appealing to a wide range of interests, whether it’s “watch week” for horologists or “one-of-a-kind” week for those with a hankering for the more rarefied or bespoke fashion item. The flagship will be located at 488 Madison Avenue, between 51st and 52nd Streets, and will carry the brand’s full line of European-made, handcrafted shoes as well as some exclusives.
“Over the past three years, the Tribeca showroom has shown us that many of our customers not only want to try on our shoes for fit and comfort, but also really enjoy seeing the quality of our materials and craftsmanship while engaging with our team in-person,” said co-founder Lane Gerson. “As Jack Erwin grows, it’s important for us to continue nurturing these customers by improving and expanding our retail experience, and with so many new products launching this year, we think now is the perfect time to introduce Jack Erwin Madison.”

Ralph & Russo, Choice of Royalty, Celebs, Coming to Madison Avenue

British couture house Ralph & Russo has signed a lease with Thor Equities to open a 5,800-square-foot flagship at 680 Madison Avenue. The building, between 61st and 62nd Streets, is also home to Tom Ford’s 12,300-square-foot flagship and a 7,000-square-foot Brioni unit.
Ralph & Russo operates a maison in London’s tony Mayfair district, while a main boutique at Harrods — one of three in the store — sells couture, shoes and leather goods. There’s also an atelier in Paris, which, like the London maison sees clients “strictly by appointment.”
Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, the Australian couple who are partners in business and life, have grown their small couture atelier, which was founded in 2007, into a force that caters to international celebrities, billionaires and royalty on several continents.
They know that couture, while dependent on skilled artisans steeped in tradition, must be accessible to clients, who want the exclusivity and craftsmanship inherent in couture, but also want it to fit into their lifestyle.
Ralph & Russo launched ready-to-wear in September during London Fashion Week, to make their aesthetic available to customers who can’t afford couture, as well as to further expand their reach.
There’s been whispers that Meghan Markle could tap Ralph & Russo

Lutwyche Opens Bespoke Shop on Madison Avenue

The British invasion into New York City continues.
Following in the footsteps of Huntsman and Thom Sweeney, two U.K. tailors that recently set up shop in the city, Lutwyche has also entered the fray.
The London-based bespoke maker has opened an appointment-only shop at 717 Madison Avenue, where it will create custom clothing for customers from an upscale location on the third floor.
The brand was founded by Tony Lutwyche in 2000 and currently offers bespoke and made-to-measure clothing as well as a small ready-to-wear collection. The ready-to-wear is carried at several Saks Fifth Avenue stores and Lutwyche also hosts trunk shows at the Saks stores twice a year.
His new 3,000-square-foot shop will not carry the ready-to-wear but will focus exclusively on custom and made-to-measure clothing.
Before starting his business, Lutwyche attended the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and was a major in the cavalry. It was there that he got his first taste for sartorial dressing when he had to buy his officer’s uniforms from Savile Row tailors. “They were reassuringly expensive,” he said, “but the experience was disappointing and the product was great, but musty.”
Once his military service ended — and a short stint in the banking world proved not to his

De Grisogono Marks Madison Avenue Flagship

De Grisogono is raising the curtain on its partnership with DLK founders and former Leviev executives Lisa and David Klein.
The two entities look to match De Grisogono’s flair for color and unconventional designs with the Klein’s expertise in important gemstones, which they honed at Leviev. As such, the two parties have worked together on new designs to be sold internationally. Additionally, the Kleins have spearheaded a new De Grisogono store at 700 Madison Avenue from which they will direct the jeweler’s U.S. business. The boutique officially opened its doors on Monday.
David is to fulfill the role of De Grisogono’s U.S. chief executive officer, and Lisa its president. De Grisogono’s international operations will continue to be run out of Geneva, Switzerland.
In February WWD announced the partnership, which has seen the Kleins’ Leviev business cease operations in order to focus on De Grisogono’s U.S. business development. They have also been hard at work to lend their expertise in stones to De Grisogono creative director Fawaz Gruosi’s designs, which have been known to skew brash and over the top, often through a use of semiprecious stones instead of remarkable gems.
“Boldness, vibrancy and modernity are a part of the De Grisogono DNA but as you

Madison Cox on Taking Up the Baton From Pierre Bergé

MARRAKESH, Morocco — Until the death of Pierre Bergé last month, Madison Cox was best known as a gifted — though ultradiscreet — landscape gardener with a list of clients including Marella Agnelli, Michael Bloomberg and Sting.
News that he tied the knot with Saint Laurent’s longtime companion and business partner in March raised his public profile a notch. Now the 59-year-old finds himself thrust into the limelight as president of the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent, in charge of preserving the legacy of fashion’s most famous power couple.
The elegant, quietly spoken Cox assumed the mantle with the inauguration earlier this month of the Yves Saint Laurent museum in Marrakesh, where he has lived part-time for the better part of two decades. He is also president of the Fondation Jardin Majorelle, which runs the neighboring garden, bought by Saint Laurent and Bergé in 1980.
Cox has been less involved with the Yves Saint Laurent museum in Paris, inaugurated last month, and admits he is still working out how to balance his passion for gardens with his new responsibilities.
Here, Cox talks about taking up the baton from Bergé, learning how to run a museum and coping with his newfound fame:

The Tie Bar to Make Madison Avenue Store Permanent

The Tie Bar is putting down permanent stakes in New York.
The Chicago-based men’s accessories brand opened a pop-up shop at 400 Madison Avenue in May that was originally expected to be open for only six months. But the success of the location, which is between 47th and 48th Streets, prompted the brand to make it the company’s first permanent store in the city.
“New York continues to be a rapidly growing market for us, so to maintain a permanent store presence here was a must,” said Allyson Lewis, chief executive officer of The Tie Bar. “Our now family of stores has proven extremely effective for the brand, exposing us to a new regional clientele.”
The brand, which offers neckwear, dress shirts, socks, pocket square, ties bars and other accessories, also has a store in Chicago and recently opened a unit in Boston. Both of those locations also got their start as pop-ups.
According to the company, the brand expects to expand to several other “key markets” in 2018. Specific cities were not disclosed, but a spokesman said The Tie Bar is looking at the East and West Coasts as well as in parts of the South.
The Madison Avenue location was the company’s third

Tie Bar Opens Madison Avenue Pop-up

NEW YORK — The Tie Bar has entered the men’s wear fray on Madison Avenue — at least for the next six months.
The Chicago-based men’s furnishings brand has taken a temporary space at 400 Madison Avenue between 47th and 48th Streets for a pop-up shop to showcase its new dress shirt collection in addition to its assortment of neckwear, socks, pocket squares, tie bars and other accessories.
Allyson Lewis, chief executive officer, was in town to put the finishing touches on the shop, which will have its official opening on Thursday.
“This is a very different location for us,” she said. “It’s more of a work destination, but we are a workwear brand at heart.”
This marks the third pop-up the Tie Bar has had in New York. Its other two were in SoHo and Greenwich Village. It has also had pop-ups in Boston and Washington, D.C.
The brand launched dress shirts last October and released its second collection in early April. “In October, we focused on core wardrobe staples but now we have more seasonal fashion — light spring colors and fabrics,” she said. “And they’re performing very well.”

Dress shirts are a new addition for Tie Bar.

She said there are no plans to offer sport shirts

Good Witch’s Bailee Madison Turns Her Garage into a ‘Lady Cave’

She’s played a fairytale princess on Once Upon a Time and a teenager with supernatural powers in the Hallmark channel’s Good Witch, but actress Bailee Madison needed some real life magic (and a little help from Wayfair) to transform her run-of-the-mill garage into a fabulous hangout spot.

“After months of filming on location or a long day of travel it’s the best feeling to be able to look forward to walking into my own space where I get to be me!” says Madison, 17. To create the chic and cozy space she’s dubbed her “lady cave,” the actress worked with Wayfair designer Ryan Saghian, who brought in layers of fresh neutrals and some glam accents worthy of a budding starlet.

RELATED: Gwyneth Paltrow’s Hyper-Organized Pantry Is Exactly as Pristine as You Imagined

Like any teen, Madison says her personal aesthetic is forever evolving, and her Los Angeles home has been an ideal proving ground. “My style has matured over the last few years but my family has always encouraged me to embrace my creativity and what makes me feel most like myself,” she says.

“She is far beyond her years, and so is her aesthetic,” says Saghian. “She wanted a glamorous, feminine, and playful space.” He selected timeless staples like a cream-colored sofa with nailhead trim, an Eames-style molded-plastic desk chair and an ultramodern console in white and clear acrylic. The more playful pieces — a purple over-dyed rug, fur-covered director’s chair and a metallic lip-print poster — can be switched up as her tastes change.

Already a Hollywood vet (she also appeared in Brothers with Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal, and Just Go With It with Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler), Madison knows the power of a great makeover sequence . . . and a Hollywood ending.

“I love taking a moment to appreciate the transformation of a blank canvas and how Ryan turned it into a beautiful inviting space,” she says. “My favorite part of the garage remodel is the memories that are about to be made!”

Brioni Opens New York Flagship on Madison Avenue

NEW YORK — Brioni is taking its luxury Italian aesthetic to Madison Avenue here with the opening of a two-level, 5,974-square-foot flagship on 62nd Street.
The store is the second iteration of a David Chipperfield Architects Milan design that launched in Paris in July on Rue Saint-Honoré. But Gianluca Flore, chief executive officer of the Kering-owned Brioni, said the layout of the New York store allows for a fuller expression of the design.
“It’s even nicer than Paris,” he said. “That fact that it is two full floors allows for the concept to express itself in a better way.” The Paris store is also on two levels, but one is below ground.
The New York store, which opens Thursday, replaces a smaller unit on 57th Street that closed on Sunday. The flagship was intended to open in late October, but construction delays, due in part to the fact that the location is a residential building, pushed back the opening date.
The opening of the store comes as Brioni is in the midst of another reboot after a tumultuous 10 months. It parted ways with its then-creative director Brendan Mullane, tapped Justin O’Shea as his successor, and then pushed O’Shea out after six months following pushback from

Holly Madison On Her ‘Weird’ Relationship With Kendra Wilkinson

For years, Holly Madison and Kendra Wilkinson seemed to be part of a secret sisterhood. But a lot has changed since the women ended their relationships with Hugh Hefner, and the former stars of “The Girls Next Door” have opened up about what life was really like at the Playboy Mansion.

Madison and Wilkinson have been trading barbs since writing their dueling memoirs, with Wilkinson recently saying Madison published her new tell-all book, Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny, for “revenge.”

Madison has her own view. In the above clip from her upcoming interview on “Oprah: Where Are They Now?,” she discusses how her relationship with Wilkinson has changed over the years.

“Kendra’s and my relationship has definitely been weird,” Madison says in the above video. “I feel like, over the years, I’ve known like three different people.”

holly madison and kendra wilkinson

When they first met, Madison says Wilkinson “started off as this girl who seemed nice.”

In 2005, “The Girls Next Door” premiered to huge ratings on E! and Madison and Wilkinson became household names. The breakout hit focused on lives of Hefner’s then-girlfriends, Madison, Wilkinson and Bridget Marquardt. For five seasons, cameras documented the drama that unfolded inside the Playboy Mansion walls.

Madison says Wilkinson changed into “this girl who’s not a girl’s girl and is very competitive and pushes away other girls.”

holly madison and kendra wilkinson

By 2009, all three women had left the mansion and ended their relationships with Hefner. Wilkinson married former wide receiver Hank Baskett in 2009 and Madison went on to marry Pasquale Rotella in 2013.

“When she met her husband she was very nice and seemed to have grown into this really different person,” Madison says.

kendra wilkinson and hank baskett

But once again, their friendship didn’t last. “And then later down the road we had a falling out, so it’s been all over the place,” she says. “I want viewers to pick up the book and read the whole story.”

Madison’s memoir, Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny, is available now.

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs Saturdays at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.

The Moment in Madison Square

My feet pounded hard into the pavement as I turned the corner onto Bull Street.  My camera slammed against my hip over and over again as I hurried toward the south, anxious to beat the rain that threatened in the distance.  As I approached Madison Square, I was slowed by the gaggle of teal-clad women ahead of me, tiptoeing with trepidation across the street so as to not dirty their shoes or, even more importantly, drop the handfuls of white wedding dress they carried.  Coming back to myself, I watched them delicately and carefully carry the bottom of Bride’s dress over the bricks as her crinoline crinkled around her with every step.  Reaching the square, I crossed to the other side to continue on my way.

That’s when I saw him.

There was Groom, standing with his back turned in the middle of the square, looking down squarely at his shoes.  He stood perfectly still, hands clasped, his eyes turned down and shoulders locked.  Like a soldier at the ready, he waited for her.

All at once, I was overcome with the weight of the moment and I found I couldn’t take another step.  Suddenly very aware of my frizzy hair and rumpled t-shirt, I scurried to a more conspicuous spot to make sure I didn’t inadvertently wind up in someone’s living room photo album.  I retreated to behind a tree, my destination all but forgotten, and watched.

In mere seconds, I was undone.  Under the canopy of the Savannah oaks, the gravity of the moment came barreling into my chest and before I knew it, the tears had started to drop from my cheeks.

Bride, you looked absolutely breathtaking.  I could go on and on about that mermaid style dress and how it was perfectly suited for you, how the simple pearls you wore around your neck danced a bit as you took deep breaths.  But my dear, it was your eyes that held my attention.  Your bridesmaids fluttered about you, arranging your dress, tucking a small lock of hair behind your ear, spreading your veil out perfectly behind you, but you didn’t really even notice they were there.

Your eyes never left him.

Groom, you were unmoved.  Resolute to fight the temptation to wheel around to lay eyes on her, you stayed.  Hands clasped and eyes locked on the ground, you waited as the anticipation filled the space between you.  She continued to gaze at you, watching you as your mind swirled with thoughts of her.

Then just like that, you saw me.  Groom, you lifted your head and your eyes came away from your shoes and fixed on the woman on the bench with the teal iPhone lifted in your direction.  At the very same moment that your eyes met mine, Bride’s eyes dropped for an instant to compose herself before taking her first step toward you.

For that split second, it was just you and me.

I wanted to tell you so many things.  I wanted to tell you how beautiful she looked, how she smiled at you with such joy, and how I could see how much she loved you even from behind a tree across the square.

But I also wanted to tell you that this moment doesn’t last forever.  I wanted to tell you about the unmet expectations you are guaranteed to struggle with, the confusion you will experience, the late-night arguments, and the frustration when she just doesn’t understand.  I wanted you to know about the incredible blessing of children and their uncanny ability to simultaneously strengthen and break you.  I wanted to tell you about the shift that happens inside of you when that ring goes on your hand.  That suddenly your life is no longer about you, that it must become about her.  That gorgeous creature behind you is looking to you to carry her, to cover her, to lead her, to hold her, to protect her.

Her eyes lifted and she took that first slow, purposeful step toward him.

Do you know why I was in Madison Square that day?  I was on my way to Forsyth Park to see the fountain and walk the oak-covered path.  I wanted to ask a kind stranger to take a photo of my husband and I in front of the fountains, one I could frame and hang on the wall to commemorate our trip to Savannah to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary.

But he wasn’t there.

I sat in that square alone that afternoon because we had a fight.  I wanted to go to Forsyth Park right that very instant because the clouds in the distance were threatening to rain on my parade, so we needed to get a move on.  After a three-hour walking tour of the city in the morning and more walking on the agenda for the evening, he was more interested in taking a bit of a rest in between so as not to burn out before dinner.  I was unwilling to relinquish my hold on my precious itinerary, so I stormed off in a huff, determined to just go by myself, thankyouverymuch.

I entered Madison Square angry, disappointed, frustrated, and annoyed.

But you, Bride and Groom, helped remind me of what was truly important. God brought me to that exact square, at that exact moment for a very specific reason.  He wanted me to see YOU.

He wanted to remind me of the slow, purposeful steps that it takes to sustain a marriage over a lifetime.  He wanted to make sure that I remembered that he was the one who joined us together ten years ago and no matter what struggles, betrayals, unmet expectations, and disappointment came our way, he would never leave us or forsake us.  He wanted me to remember the way that Evan looked at me on that day, ten years ago, full of the same love and adoration I saw on the faces of Bride and Groom.  I realized that I still catch him looking at me that way, even now.  He wanted to gently tell me that ten years is only the beginning for us, that he had some fantastic things in store for us and many more memories for us to make, maybe even some to photograph and hang in a frame on the wall.

Bride and Groom, I wish you abundant blessings.  I hope your wedding day was everything you dreamed it would be and that the rain that drenched us later as we walked through Bonaventure Cemetery didn’t disrupt your celebration too much.

I’m grateful to have been privy to this moment between you even more thankful for the things it gave me to think about as I continued on to Forsyth Park on my own.  I took a super-lame fountain selfie and returned to the hotel where Evan and I talked about our disagreement that afternoon and moved past it.  We laced up our walking shoes to go grab a coffee down the street and I told him all about the moment I saw you in Madison Square.

My super-lame fountain selfie.  🙂
