Amid Men’s Wear Hype, Thoughtful Basics Are Making Noise, Too

It’s all about simplicity.
At a time when streetwear is dominating the conversation in the world of men’s fashion, there are a number of brands that are quietly building sizable businesses selling updated basics to guys who don’t live and die for the latest Supreme drop or Virgil Abloh sneaker collaboration.
Brands such as Buck Mason, Everlane, Goodlife and Huckberry are making inroads selling these items, which could be labeled “everyday casualwear” or “essentials.”
In years past, their customers probably bought their chinos, T-shirts and hoodies in department stores or specialty retailers such as Gap or Banana Republic. But today, they’re increasingly seeking out other options and spending their money on brands they feel better address their needs.
“They offer simple solutions,” said Wendy Liebmann, chief executive officer of WSL, a global strategy consultancy. “When you look at all the new businesses that are cropping up, they address the fundamental issue in the industry, which is that men are looking for something reasonable to wear that is comfortable and stylish.”
Liebmann believes the “increased lack of service” at department and large specialty stores, coupled with the “enormous” assortment offered “without curation,” is what is driving men to indie brands that are trend-right but not overwhelming.

Zalando Making a Product Push at Next Bread&&Butter in Berlin

BERLIN — Product will be moving into the forefront at the next Bread&&Butter in Berlin Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.
At a special B&&B preview here Wednesday, Zalando revealed the B2C festival, now dubbed “The Pop-up of Style and Culture” would be morphing into a real “see-now-buy-now” weekend packed with more than 100 limited-edition drops, exclusive products, collaborations and prelaunches from more than 40 brands. These can be purchased on site during B&&B at Berlin’s Arena as well as online. Also reflecting the push for more: a second ampersand is now officially part of the Bread&&Butter name. It had previously popped up in the event’s abbreviated form, but is now the official event name.
Moreover, Zalando will be launching a year-round shopping hub, breadandbutter.com, at the end of August. The online “destination for style and culture” will feature exclusive product drops and a trend assortment of selected streetwear brands, Zalando said.
Prior to the preview, Carsten Hendrich, vice president of Creative Lab Zalando, told WWD, “When we first started B&&B, we built it up like a market. It was about the shopping experience, but this year we’re moving further” with a heightened focus on product. “We worked very closely with the brands not

Michelle Obama Says ‘Making Mistakes Was Not an Option’ for Barack as the First Black President

During a recent speech in New Orleans, former First Lady Michelle Obama opened up about race and the unique pressure she and husband Barack Obama faced in the White House during his time as the nation’s first black president.

“Barack and I knew very early that we would be measured by a different yardstick,” Obama, 54, said during a talk at the American Library Association’s annual conference in New Orleans on Friday. “Making mistakes was not an option for us. Not that we didn’t make mistakes, but we had to be good — no, we had to be outstanding — at everything we did. … When you’re the first, you’re the one that’s laying the red carpet down for others to follow.”

She also touched on the dangers of judging people by the color of their skin, something she says she’s experienced first-hand.

“It’s just a shame that sometimes people will see me, and they will only see my color, and then they’ll make certain judgments about that,” she said. “That’s dangerous, for us to dehumanize each other in that way. We are all just people.”

Obama’s appearance comes a few months before the release of her upcoming memoir, Becoming, due out in November.

The former first lady announced the title and release date for her book in a February statement to PEOPLE, saying, “Writing Becoming has been a deeply personal experience. It has allowed me, for the very first time, the space to honestly reflect on the unexpected trajectory of my life … how a little girl from the South Side of Chicago found her voice and developed the strength to use it to empower others.”

How Alife Is Making a Comeback

Rob Cristofaro and Treis Hill have bought back Alife and have a new investor.
Alife, which is now almost 20 years old, was originally founded as an artist collective and multibrand retail space by Cristofaro, Arnaud Delecolle, Tony Arcabascio and Tammy Brainard — Hill joined the team later. The company, which also operates Alife Rivington Club in the Lower East Side, a sneaker concept store that’s been open since 2001, and Alife, its apparel store that sits next to it, has been through a string of owners and financial partners, but it was most recently co-owned by Cristofaro, Hill and Seth Gerszberg, who is now no longer involved.
For the past couple of years, Alife — one of the original downtown streetwear brands that was founded when the term streetwear didn’t exist — has released a few things here and there, but Cristofaro and Hill have been mostly quiet and focused on cleaning up Alife’s global distribution and preparing for a true relaunch, which begins with an unlikely product collaboration with Crocs.

Alife x Crocs

Cristofaro approached Crocs before the footwear brand re-entered the fashion conversation last October via a tie-in with Balenciaga on an imaginative, platform pair that retails for $ 850. The Alife

The female Sumatran orangutan was born on March 25 in “a natural and uneventful birth,” according to the zoo’s Facebook, to mom Nias and dad Berani.

Cherah, which means “bright” in Indonesian, is not on public display. She and mom, who are both healthy, are taking some time to bond behind the scenes before they are introduced to zoo visitors some time in the next week or so.

The baby primate is sure to be a hit. Not only is she adorable, she seems to have a knack for comedy, often pulling funny faces in the Facebook photos the zoo has shared.

Snapchat Stock Drops $800 Million After Rihanna Condemned Ad Making Light of Domestic Violence

Less than a month after Kylie Jenner sent Snapchat stock into a downward spiral, another celebrity slam on the photo-sharing app has seemingly caused the company to take a major hit.

The stock prices of Snap Inc. fell around 4 percent on Thursday, reported CNN. The dip came after Rihanna responded to the app’s apology for running an ad for a game called “Would You Rather” asking users if they would rather slap Rihanna or punch her ex Chris Brown, alluding to a 2009 domestic violence incident. The market value of the app’s parent company dropped almost $ 800 million, according to the outlet.

On Friday, Snap’s stock fell another 1 percent, CNN reported.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel’s personal net worth dropped $ 150 million due to the decease, according to Forbes. He is currently worth an estimated $ 3.8 billion, Forbes reported.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

In 2009, Rihanna’s then-boyfriend Brown physically assaulted her in his car ahead of a Grammys party.

Brown, now 28, was charged with two felony counts — assault and making criminal threats — and the exes reached a plea agreement that spared Brown jail time after he pleaded guilty to felony assault by means likely to cause great bodily injury.

After the social media app apologized on Tuesday for running the since-pulled ad, Rihanna responded via Instagram on Thursday.

“Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess! I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb!” the 30-year-old singer wrote in an Instagram Story.

“You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it!!! This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them…but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet…you let us down!” Rihanna’s post continued.

“Shame on you,” she added. “Throw the whole app-oligy away.”

A lawyer for the Brown shared the following statement with PEOPLE: “Whoever conceived this at Snap Chat needs to be slapped.”

“This advertisement is disgusting and never should have appeared on our service. We are so sorry we made the terrible mistake of allowing it through our review process. We are investigating how that happened so that we can make sure it never happens again,” Snapchat said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

After removing the ad from the app on Tuesday, Snapchat also released the following statement to the BBC: “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.”

Last month, Snapchat’s stock dropped $ 1.3 billion in market value, according to Time, after Jenner revealed to her followers that she no longer opens the app.

The outlet also reported Wall Street analyst Mark May downgraded the stock to sell from neutral after the app’s redesign sparked negative reviews from users.

Sean John at 20: Sean Combs on Longevity and Making a Difference

While his name may have changed more times than some people change cars, there has been at least one constant for Sean Combs over the past 20 years: The Sean John brand.
The label’s founder, born Sean John Combs, has been known as Puffy, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Diddy and now, Love. But for the hip-hop entrepreneur, they’re all just names that reflect different periods in his life. Call him what you will — his success speaks for itself.
His earnings in 2017 alone, according to Forbes, were $ 130 million and his net worth is estimated at $ 820 million, edging out even Jay Z, who is worth a mere $ 810 million.
Not bad for someone who dropped out of business school in his sophomore year. Now, at 48, Combs has a multipronged career that covers not only fashion but music, TV production, athletes’ beverages and vodka. And, of course, he travels with his own entourage – at his WWD shoot, 17 people arrived well ahead of the star. Given all his activities, getting face time with Combs can be a challenge, hence the reason Sean John’s vice president of design arrived with storyboards and line sheets for the holiday 2018 collection, which he

STREET SIGNS: The Making of a Celebrity Sneaker Deal

Reebok spent a year courting Future.
The relationship began in 2015 when the company started seeding the artist, whose real name is Nayvadius Wilburn, with shoes to wear. Then the team began attending his shows, inviting him to Reebok’s headquarters in Massachusetts and detailing how both parties could help each other.
“They made an effort to connect with him,” said Ebonie Ward, Future’s brand manager. “It wasn’t about sending e-mails. They told him they didn’t want to take advantage of him as an artist and use his fan base. They wanted to build a partnership with him. That’s what sealed the deal with Future. It wasn’t about him throwing on a pair of shoes and thinking people are going to just buy them.”
Athletic companies tapping celebrities, specifically hip-hop artists, isn’t a new concept. In fact, 14 years ago, Reebok offered Jay-Z a deal — the first of its kind — that led to the commercially successful S. Carter sneakers, which, when released, were one of the brand’s best-selling products. But the structure of today’s deals, and the climate around them, has evolved and Future’s relationship with Reebok reflects how the market has shifted.
Future signed with Reebok in 2016 and has played a

‘Homeboy’s Gonna, Like, Get It:’ Bella Hadid’s Slang-Filled Sneaker Shopping Video Is Making the Internet Insane

Bella Hadid often makes headlines for her nearly-nude looks, her fierce poses and smoldering selfies (and belfies). But this time, the 21-year-old supermodel has caught the Internet’s attention with her linguistics.

Hadid recently appeared on Complex‘s Sneaker Shopping where she met with Joe La Puma at Kith in New York City to chat about her love for sneakers and her partnership with Nike.

When the subject turned to “sexy tennis shoes,” Hadid opened up about the role sneakers play in her love life.

“Sneakers on a man is definitely the first thing I look at … I mean, come on. Matching shoes, that’s dope,” Hadid began, before picking up different shoes.

“I don’t mind dirty sneakers but they better be fresh,” she explained. “If homeboy’s coming through with these, it’s quiet. Yeah, no, it’s quiet for him. But, like, if he comes through in, like these. You got some Air Maxes out here, you got some Jordans. Homeboy’s gonna, like, get it.”

In true Twitter fashion, social media users immediately on Hadid’s quotes and started riffing on them, as seen above.

Others accused the model of trying to sound cool, with one even tweeting “Why does Bella Hadid sound like she’s trying to convince a group of underprivileged teens that drugs are wack.”

“I see Bella hadid in the corner of my room repeating ‘dope’ and ‘homeboy’ when I’m having sleep paralysis,” one Twitter user wrote.

What do you think of Bella’s Complex interview? Is it “quiet” for her?

Rihanna And Lupita Nyong’o Are Officially Making A Film With Ava DuVernay

It all started with a tweet.

The Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o movie dreamt up by Twitter users and propelled to viral fame is set to become a reality. Netflix nabbed the rights in “a very aggressive bid” at the Cannes Film Festival, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Back in April, @blaquepink shared an iconic 2014 photo of Rihanna and Nyong’o seated together at Paris Fashion Week.

User @1800SADGAL responded that the pair looked like the perfect duo.

And thus a movie idea was born. Rihanna and Nyong’o were game.

Ava DuVernay will direct and Issa Rae is set to write, according to EW. DuVernay and Rae were also recruited by determined Twitter users.

“I really think it shows the power of people wanting to see stories that are women-centered, women of color-centered that are made by women of color,” DuVernay told TIME last month. “I think it was really interesting that after Rihanna and Lupita were in the picture and the story went viral, it wasn’t about who’s the male lead or who’s the sidekick, it was about who’s going to write it? Who’s going to direct it?”

“I think that is really interesting about people’s interest in who’s creating and who’s telling the story and especially on Twitter where everyone is telling their own story,” she continued. “We’ll see what happens.”

Reps for Rae told Vanity Fair that the Twitter users who came up with the idea “will be credited and included in some form.”

Needless to say, everyone is pretty excited.

This article has been updated with info from Issa Rae’s team.

This K-Pop Band With No Korean Members Is Making People Angry

An unconventional K-pop group is attempting to dominate the Korean music industry, but the genre’s fans aren’t exactly singing its praises.

EXP Edition, a K-pop boy band that doesn’t have a single Korean member, just released a new music video for their song “Feel Like This.” While the mostly-white, American group’s video made headlines, the release also opened up a discussion about the band’s place in the Korean music industry.

After seeing the band sing in Korean and adopt K-pop style, Asians across the internet definitely weren’t afraid to sound off on the subject. And let’s just say, many of them won’t be listening to EXP Edition on repeat.

The band, which calls itself “a fresh hybrid of K-pop,” actually started out back in 2014 as South Korean artist Bora Kim’s master’s degree thesis project at Columbia University. Kim explained that her goal was to explore identity politics, masculinity and other topics.

“I was thinking about cultural flow, or the relationship of dominant culture and peripheral culture, and how that is interwoven with one’s identity or one’s national identity,” Kim, who initially pulled in friends Karin Kuroda and Samantha Shao to help with the band, explained. “I wanted to see what would happen if I made American boys into K-pop performers, by teaching them how to sing in Korean and act like Korean boys, and complicate this flow/appropriation even more…”

But since then, the band has grown to be much more than a college project and its members have even relocated to Seoul to infiltrate the Korean market. With this new single, however, dedicated K-pop fans don’t seem happy with the American group. Many called EXP out for appropriating Korean culture, since none of the members have Korean roots. In fact, shortly before moving to Korea, they admitted that they knew very little about the culture.

“We haven’t been introduced to much of the culture,” Koki Tomlinson, the sole Asian, half-Japanese member of the group, told Fusion last year. “We have a very basic understanding of it, just because we’ve really only listened to K-pop.”

Several also criticized the group’s performance quality, asking why the band didn’t incorporate any choreography, an iconic element to K-pop, in their video. But one of the most vocalized criticisms was the way in which the all-American group decided to enter an Asian music industry when Asian artists and those of Asian descent barely ever make it in America’s.

Indeed, Asian artists have had a tough time succeeding as they’ve often been rejected for “looking” Asian. Harlemm Lee, an artist of Chinese and Filipino descent, won the NBC reality show “Fame” in 2003 and even scored a record contract. However, he still struggled to have a successful career.

“In terms of finding an advocate in the industry, the Asian thing has been the critical factor,” Lee told The New York Times years ago. “You don’t fit.”

The Korean music industry is one place where Asians dominate and some K-pop fans feel there’s a double standard at play when a completely non-Korean band just slides in.

The criticisms haven’t deterred Kim and her crew from continuing their work, though. She told The Huffington Post in an email that she admits cultural appropriation is an issue, but insists that’s not what her group is doing. She feels the band isn’t appropriating because they are immersed in the K-pop scene.

“K-pop has become an important part of our identity (professionally and personally) and that no one can deny. We are living, breathing, creating K-pop, collaborating with people in the K-pop industry every day,” she said. “So to conclude, if you ask me if we’re appropriating K-pop, I’m going to say No … We are already genuinely a part of K-pop.”

Well, if the new music video serves as any indication of their style and vibe, the band is undeniably off to a rocky start.

Jessica Chastain Won’t Take Roles Until She Knows What Male Stars Are Making

Jessica Chastain is officially done making less money than her male costars.

The “Zero Dark Thirty” star, who is a vocal supporter of closing the wage gap in Hollywood and beyond, revealed in an interview with Variety on Monday that she now refuses roles with unequal wages based on principle. (In 2015, Chastain told HuffPost she made a small fraction of what Matt Damon was paid for “The Martian.”)

“I’m not taking jobs anymore where I’m getting paid a quarter of what the male co-star is being paid,” Chastain told Variety. “I’m not allowing that in my life.”

Chastain stated that when negotiating for roles, she makes it a point to ask producers about what they’re offering her in comparison to the men in the film.

“I don’t care about how much I get paid; I’m in an industry where we’re overcompensated for the work we do,” the actress explained. “But I don’t want to be on a set where I’m doing the same work as someone else and they’re getting five times what I’m getting.”

The actress admits that sticking to her convictions and her principles hasn’t always been easy. Chastain revealed that she recently turned down “something huge” because of the wage gap issue.

“I turned it down, and they didn’t come back. I remember afterwards I was like, ‘What did I do? Maybe it was a mistake,’” Chastain said.

“But it wasn’t, because everyone in the studio system heard what I did. So what you’re doing is creating a reputation: Don’t bring Jessica something where she’s not being fairly compensated compared to the male actor. Even though I lost that film, I’ve created a boundary. I drew a line in the sand.”

Head over to Variety to read the full interview.

5 Skin Care Tips For Making Sure Your Melanin Flourishes This Spring

Spring has officially sprung!

And while many people are thinking about decluttering their space and breaking out sundresses and shorts, they may forget that their skin care regimen could use some spring cleaning, too.

Dermatologist Brooke A. Jackson, M.D., told The Huffington Post a few key things people of color should be doing to ensure our skin, our body’s largest organ, remains glowing and healthy through the seasonal changes.

From sun protection to getting rid of discoloration, the North Carolina-based doctor has five necessary tips that keep your melanin on fleek this spring and summer.

1. Lighten up your routine

Just as you change your wardrobe, you should change your products. Put away the jars of heavy body butters and creams, and opt for something lighter, Jackson advises.

You start wearing shorts and T-shirts and so you should do the same with your products,” she said. “So generally we recommend in the winter time, you use a big jar of something you actually scoop. And in the spring and the summer, you can go a little bit lighter with something that has a little bit more lotion; like Vaseline Cocoa Radiant is a good choice because you still get the moisturizing effect because it’s got the micro droplets of Vaseline jelly and 100 percent pure cocoa butter in it but it’s not quite as heavy as some other jar products are.”

2. Stay moisturized

We tend to do more activities that can dry out our skin in the summer, like going to the beach or taking a dip in the pool. Jackson told HuffPost that it’s important to moisturize afterward, especially after being exposed to chlorine, which is “very, very drying.”

In addition to lathering up in the morning, she said swimmers should rinse all of the saltwater or pool water off and use lotion. Jackson said this doesn’t just apply to people who swim but people with certain skin conditions as well.

“Generally, I would say you should moisturize once to twice a day depending on what’s going on with you,” she said. “Certainly, if somebody has drier skin or if they’ve got eczema, they probably need a little bit more moisture and so two full moisturizing processes a day would be great … A lot of people during the spring and summer will probably do just fine with the once coming out of the shower in the morning.”

3. Go with your own glow

Despite the widespread myth, black people do need sunscreen. Jackson said this idea probably stemmed from people of color historically being excluded from certain medical research.

“Historically we focused on sunburn and a direct correlation between sunburn and skin cancer and so therefore [the message was only] our fair-skinned counterparts get it,” she said. “That message has been loud and clear for many, many years but [there’s an assumption that] people who have darker skin tend not to burn.”

If you’re going to chase the sun, protect yourself, she said.

“I think it’s really important to make sure that we are all sun protecting ourselves because it is not out of the realm of possibilities that skin cancer will develop,” Jackson explained. “So going with your own glow, not actively seeking tanning at the beach or just going out for a run, just making sure that you’re sun protected.”

It also doesn’t hurt that sunscreen can help get rid of discoloration.

4. Remember less is more

One product that locks and seals moisture is better (and more practical) than a cabinet full of products that you hardly use. Jackson said people should pick a product that can do multiple things for you and stick to it.

“Keep your regimen simple,” she said.

5. When all else fails, see a doctor

Dermatologists have the answers specific to your skin that your favorite YouTube vlogger may not have. Jackson said many of the skin problems people of color face (discoloration, hyperpigmentation, etc.) can only be healed by getting to the root of the issue.

“I have a lot of patients who try everything under the kitchen sink and then with their girlfriends and everything on the internet and they don’t make an appointment with a dermatologist who can help them out in 10 minutes or less,” Jackson said. “Discoloration is a huge issue with skin of color and we get discoloration from any inflammatory condition, acne, eczema, etc., so again, a reason to make sure that you’re getting the treatment that you need to make sure that that is controlled is because 9 times out of 10, the number one complaint of patients with skin color is I want an even complexion and I want this discoloration to go away.”

Jackson also said since black dermatologists aren’t accessible to everyone, it’s important for people with melanin to ask if their dermatologist knows how to treat darker skin.

Now, go forth and prosper with a fresh glow to your skin.

Dave Chappelle Wants Comedians To Stop Making The Same Donald Trump Jokes

Saturday Night Live” is experiencing a creative renaissance and its biggest ratings in two decades under Donald Trump’s presidency. But Dave Chappelle has a message for fellow comedians enjoying the fruits of the administration’s blunders: “Trump’s kind of bad for comedy.”

Speaking with CBC on Sunday, Chappelle offered his take on the current president’s relationship with his chosen profession, agreeing that comedy has “a role to play under Trump,” but warning that there’s a risk of regurgitating the same material.

“Most comics in the states are starting to do the same jokes, just because Trump is so on everybody’s mind,” he said. “So it’ll be nice when we don’t have to talk about him that much.”

Despite his concerns over Trump’s omnipresence, Chappelle said he still believes the state of comedy today is “strong and healthy,” citing the return of some of his favorites like Chris Rock and Jon Stewart to the game.

“I think that most of these guys you see working are wildly courageous,” he explained. “It’s such a strange time, being bombarded with so much information, and I think comedy is an important valve for syphoning through all that.”

In November, Chappelle hosted the first “Saturday Night Live” episode after the election and delivered a stirring opening monologue in response to Trump’s surprise win. After joking that America actually elected “an internet troll as our president,” he recalled a recent visit to the White House for a BET event that made him feel hopeful about the country’s direction.

“I saw how happy everybody was, these people who had been historically disenfranchised, and it made me feel hopeful, and it made me feel proud to be an American,” Chappelle said. “So, in that spirit, I’m wishing Donald Trump luck. I’m going to give him a chance, and we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”

For more from Chappelle, you can watch his two comedy specials that premiere on Netflix this month.

Meet Chad Palmatier and Anthony Sobotik. Together they run Lick Honest Ice Creams. But what does it mean for ice cream to be honest?

In 2010, the couple sold their home in Ohio, moved to Austin, Texas, and opened Lick Honest Ice Creams with a mandate to use only wholesome ingredients from local farmers.

“We want to support our local dairies and farmers,” Sobotik says. “That’s really important to us.”

With Sobotik dreaming up inventive flavors (Cilantro Lime, Texas Sheet Cake and Dewberry Corn Cobler), they’ve created a product you can feel good about eating.

For more American Doers, go to americandoers.people.com.

“All of our produce and all of the chocolate, goat cheese, honey and olive oil we use comes from local farmers and artisans,” Sobotik adds. “We’re trying to work as much with the small farmers as we can. It’s a win-win.

Palmatier adds, “It’s our whole mission — just keeping everything super local.”

And it all comes back to the simple joy of ice cream.

“We know how happy ice cream makes people because it makes us happy as well,” Sobotik says. “And then getting to work with all these farmers and artisans, we have a great group that we work with.

“We get to make a product that gives joy to people.”

Exclusive Video Release of the Making of Lowland Hum’s New Album ‘Thin’

2016-11-23-1479934787-6404030-TqxfGnkz4qh9ekzh2PJAnxB35b0oFdL0meVtUMLeO4Iu1zUrjaWk78CTevTtl6fPEHRoYGeWQVKEkeA39GHbYhCR_c9TgfxoXZ2TSNPc1CjmlBiJBfzOvM7RQjSJ9f9diCgpAWxr6QyIuRos0de1ft.jpg

It’s safe to say that in the cacophony that has been this political season, we are all looking for some peace.

“It’s such a noisy time in history, people want something quieter,” says Daniel Goans, one half of the duo that makes up Lowland Hum.

Indeed. And one need look no further than this husband-wife team, who just finished up their fourth album, “Thin,” which is due out Feb. 10, 2017.

The other half, and some may refer to her as his better half, Lauren Goans says that when it came time to record “Thin,” they wanted to get back to their roots. “When we started doing music together, it was just the two of us,” she says.

As the couple’s sound palate grew, so did the band. They hired musicians to go on the road. “In the end, we realized we wanted to be more true to who we are, just the two of us,” Lauren continues. “I feel like it’s a coming back to the beginning, but we are different people now.”

Daniel adds, “This album incorporates some of what we did in larger musical settings but distills it down. We make a quiet kind of music.”

And fans are in for a treat because they can watch the making of “Thin” in this exclusive video release right here, right now.

From the outset, this duo, who are originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, has written, arranged and produced their own music.

The Goans now call Charlottesville, Virginia, home and that’s where they recorded “Thin” in a friend’s attic and filmed the video in the couple’s apartment.

“Part of the vision for the video, and really for what we do in general, is we are trying to combine a voice out of two perspectives,” Lauren explains. “We wanted to give a picture of what our life was like.”

For example, the tea that plays a starring role in the video “was a big part of our life,” while they were recording, Lauren adds.

The audio from the video, which was produced by Pando Creative Co., was recorded in the place where the couple recorded “Thin,” Daniel explains.

“We set up a microphone and she asked me questions and then I asked her questions,” he says, adding that they try to be individuals and not diminish each other but the combination creates the whole that is Lowland Hum, which is also reflected in the duo’s name.

Lauren says, “Picking a name for yourself is weird. You want it to be of the same spirit. Then one morning I saw the two words, Lowland and Hum, together in my mind. I am a visual person. A lot of what we write about is hard to pin down. Threads buzzing with electricity connecting things. The name alluded to it. It’s much more mysterious, kind of like songwriting. A lot coming from outside the creative process is mysterious. I think it came from beyond us.”

The paired formed as a musical duo in 2012, not long after they were wed, and have released an album each year since. You may have had a chance to catch them at such festivals as Phuzz Phest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, or Scythian’s Appaloosa Roots Music Fest in Front Royal, Virginia, but their big break came when they caught the attention of NPR’s Bob Bolin, whose team produces the now famous “Tiny Desk” concert series.

“That gave us legitimacy,” Daniel says. “Nothing else has had that kind of effect.”

Watch Lowland Hum’s Tiny Desk concert here.

But what really makes these two click is making music — together. “I wake up every day and say, ‘Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go. We really do just love it. I think we feel the most that we are where we are supposed to be when we are creating something together.”

Lauren adds, “This is what we’re best at.”

You can listen for yourself live when Lowland Hum opens for Josh Ritter in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Dec. 2 and in Richmond, Virginia, on Dec. 3 and with Mountain Chaser in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 9. The duo embarks on headlining dates during the first part of 2017 to support the release of “Thin,” according to their publicist.

Making Campaigns Count

Making Campaigns Count

Darrell M. West explores leadership and and coalition-building in the 1980 presidential campaign. Concentrating upon the candidates’ own perceptions of the need to build coalitions that will elect them, he raises questions that go to the heart of presidential politics: how have changes in presidential campaigns influenced candidate strategies? what coalitions did presidential contenders try to put together? how did the candidates use rhetoric, campaign travel, and symbolism in their coalition building? what did candidates learn from their audiences in their months and years on the campaign trail? what do these lessons imply for political leadership and coalition building? To answer these questions, he draws on interviews with ninety advisors to candidates and on data taken from the candidates’ travels and speeches, press coverage, and audience reactions. His findings reveal a surprising consistency in the approach to building an electoral majority.

‘The Artist’s Compass’: Making a Life in the Performing Arts

2016-05-03-1462304247-5475380-ArtistsCompassCoverImage.jpg

He was a self-taught musician who fought epic battles with music industry giants to gain control of his work. He championed the rights of artists at a time of great upheaval in the entertainment business, when the ability of artists to earn a living plummeted. If you are an artist who is less inclined to brandish a middle finger at the industry — as Prince did — or are not yet in a position to do so, then Rachel Moore’s new book, The Artist’s Compass, may be an invigorating read.

In years past, there were many large companies willing to invest in the development of young artists with talent, but those are fast disappearing, and it is becoming more and more important for emerging artists to become self-starters and create their own opportunities. The incubators for developing artists may be largely gone, but so are the gatekeepers, which means that anyone can create their own opportunities if they’re clever enough, determined enough, and talented enough to assess the marketplace and take advantage of what’s out there.

This sober, graceful “guide to building a life and a living in the performing arts” — remarkably compact for such a sweeping purpose — packs much useful information into its 180 pages. Perhaps its greatest value lies in its consolidation of nitty-gritty advice and broader, philosophical food for thought. Aimed at young people who aspire to a career in the arts, as well as those who are reinventing themselves in the arts, The Artist’s Compass tackles practical matters of self-marketing, auditions, employment contracts, personal budgeting and finance; it also steers the reader through critical career decisions, girding them to face the more common challenges, while smartly avoiding a “one size fits all” approach.

Most newly trained artists will find themselves operating as freelancers, working intermittently, figuring out where their next gig will come from and how to pay the rent until then. They will have been trained by experts but, as Moore sagely points out, “most teachers who are expert in their respective artistic disciplines are not necessarily expert in the business of the performing arts.”

That business has been profoundly altered — for better and for worse — by changes in demand and by advances in technology. Moore advises emerging artists on how to assemble their ‘personal board of directors,’ and how to harness tech not only to help them build their brand but also to streamline the logistics of their daily lives.

A leading arts administrator, Moore is impeccably positioned to deliver this wide-ranging advice. Once a struggling artist herself, she saw her career in the corps de ballet of American Ballet Theatre cut short by injury at age 24, went to university, then rose to become the CEO of American Ballet Theatre. She is now President and CEO of The Music Center in Los Angeles. The thoughtful insights in The Artist’s Compass reflect not just her own personal experience, but also that of an array of talents including Sigourney Weaver, Renée Fleming, Lang Lang, Misty Copeland, Natalia Makarova, and Daniil Simkin.

Simkin, who has a massive social media following, shares his thoughts on social media do’s and don’ts.

Copeland understands that fame often fuels a backlash, and has employed an admirable strategy for dealing with online vitriol.

Moore’s own comical experience being interviewed for Vogue magazine offers a valuable lesson in handling the press.

A vital chapter entitled ‘When things go wrong’ tackles nettlesome matters like workplace harassment sensibly and spiritedly. However, some of the space devoted to the perils of apartment subletting and traffic violations could more profitably have been diverted to navigating the increasingly common minefields in the music and arts world, such as breaches of intellectual property. Where penalties can be crippling, it is wise to be forearmed.

A list of books by experts in finance and other fields can be found under ‘Further reading.’ But a few topics such as IP, partnerships, and situations that call for the creation of separate business entities, bear touching upon in this bird’s eye view.

Another area that merits exploration is fundraising, the cause of much angst among freelance artists. How can an artist chase grants if she can’t afford a professional grant writer? Is crowd-funding all it’s cracked up to be?

Among the many pearls of wisdom in The Artist’s Compass, one finds exhortations to explore other art forms, to engage with the world, to prioritize a formal education, and to consider making a home outside the major art capitals. Moore makes a compelling case for each practice she advocates. She also has advice on eating and sleeping. I vaguely remember my mother saying something along those lines, but, as is often the case, a parent’s authority wanes in those late teen years. The Artist’s Compass packs a lot more power than one parent’s voice. Frank and engagingly written, it is likely to become a trusted resource for many an artist, even for those who are further along in their careers.

Many artists become fearful when they hear the words “negotiate a contract.” Visions of used-car dealers and fast-talking salesmen dance in their heads. Don’t be afraid… It isn’t about winning or losing, it is about finding common ground.

It weaves together brilliantly the elements of the ‘manufacture’ of masculinity in the period world-famous ‘public’ school system for the privileged which serviced the largest empire, the world has ever known, at the zenith of its control and which has had a significant influence in the formation of the modern world. This magisterial study reveals the extraordinary and paramount influence of games fields as the ‘machine tools’ in an ‘industrial process’ with the schools as ‘workshops’ containing ‘cultural conveyor-belts’ for the production of robust, committed and confident servants of empire, and templates for imperial reproduction in imperial possessions. Your Spouse’s Unhealthy Habits Could Be Making You Fat, Study Says

(Reuters Health) – Need another reason to blame weight gain on your marriage? When one spouse becomes obese, the other’s risk of obesity almost doubles, a U.S. study suggests.

“Normal weight people whose spouses went from being normal weight to obese were more likely to become obese,” said Laura Cobb, who led the study as a researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

“This suggests that changes in one spouse are likely to also be reflected in the other spouse, likely because of similar changes in diet, physical activity or other behaviors that impact obesity,” Cobb said by email.

Plenty of research already links marriage and weight gain, and scientists have firmly established the connection between obesity and heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

What the current study adds is a fresh take on how couples may gain weight in tandem, insight that might help shape more effective obesity prevention and treatment efforts targeting couples, Cobb and colleagues note in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Researchers followed almost 4,000 couples for up to 25 years, starting between 1987 and 1989. After an initial exam, they had three follow-up visits roughly three years apart, followed by a fifth exam between 2011 and 2013.

At the start of the study, 23 percent of the men and 25 percent of the women were obese.

Non-obese men whose wives became obese between visits in the study were 78 percent more likely to become obese during that period than they would have been had their wives not gained so much weight, the study found.

Having a husband become obese was linked to an 89 percent increased risk of developing obesity for their wives.

Not many people who started out obese lost enough weight to be considered no longer obese, but when they did, their spouse was also more likely to become non-obese.

Shortcomings of the study include the long stretch of time that elapsed between the fourth and fifth exams and the large proportion of people who died or left the study before the final visit, the authors acknowledge.

It’s not unusual for married couples to forge common habits over time that influence their weight, said Ivanka Prichard, a weight loss researcher at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.

“Over time, similarities in diet, particularly any unhealthy aspects, may lead to weight changes,” Prichard, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “There are also a range of pressures in life that could impact this such as having children, work, shared health knowledge, time or finances.”

Like unhealthy habits, though, positive lifestyle choices can also be contagious in a marriage, said Debra Umberson, director of the Population Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

“When married people get in shape or lose weight, it’s often because one spouse takes the lead and urges the other spouse along,” Umberson, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “Even if the person not taking the lead is resistant, over time they will probably be influenced by the kinds of food and activities their spouse is involved with – especially if the person taking the lead is the one who purchases groceries or prepares meals.”

Art Therapy Is More Than Just Making Nice Pictures

Anyone who has ever put pen to paper, crayon to coloring book, or hand to wet clay knows the healing powers embedded in such creative endeavors. More than just a pastime, art can be an escape, a stimulus, a war cry or a tranquil reprieve.

Art therapy, defined as “a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication,” revolves around this principal of art’s immense power. Open to children and adults of any background and experience, the still-evolving field explores modes of expression, understanding and healing that occur when paint touches canvas. While too many schools today run under the assumption that art is extraneous, a diversion from traditional academic subjects, art therapists know better. They know that art has the potential to change lives, and, even to save them.

Tally Tripp is the art therapy clinic director of George Washington University, specializing in individuals who have experienced trauma. Entering the field in its nascent phase, in the 1970s, Tripp was elemental in shaping the field as we know it today.

Continuing The Huffington Post’s coverage of the often misunderstood field that is art therapy, and the pioneers who continue to sculpt it, we reached out to Tripp to discuss the details of her career’s past and present.

How did you become interested in art therapy? How did you learn about the field?

When I first learned about art therapy it was definitely a field in its infancy. Personally, I have always loved art making and combined that with an interest in working with people. In high school I spent summers in New York working for the Children’s Aid Society with disadvantaged children in a camp program. It was there, as a counselor in the arts and crafts program, I came across one of the original art therapy journals: the Bulletin of Art Therapy (edited by Elinor Ulman and produced between 1961-1970).

For many years, that journal was the only art therapy publication available. At the same time, in 1971, Elinor Ulman and her colleague, psychologist Bernard Levy started an art therapy program at the George Washington University. Pretty quickly my goal became to study art therapy in the master’s program at GW, which I did between 1978 and 1981. Now, full circle, I am a full time professor in the art therapy program at GW and the director of the GW Art Therapy Clinic.

How did art therapy look when you first immersed yourself in it?

In the late 1970s, art therapy was still an emerging profession. It was definitely an exciting time for the field as we students were taught by some of the early pioneers: Elinor Ulman, Edith Kramer and Hanna Kwiatkowska — innovative thinkers developing clinical approaches that were based largely on intuition coupled with psychoanalytic thinking that was popular at the time. Also in those days there were few texts or research studies on art therapy to guide us, so we learned primarily by our experiences and our clinical work. As art therapy was a relatively unknown profession, we all put time and effort into spreading the word and educating others about its value.

The field is more established now, and more often than not, people have heard of art therapy and have some understanding of how it works. Art therapists now have licenses in some states as well as levels of professional credentialing and board certification. Beyond that, we have a lot of art therapy literature at our fingertips including research studies supporting the efficacy of art therapy and describing how it is utilized across many settings and populations. Art therapists can now be found in various settings — from medical and psychiatric hospitals, to schools, geriatric facilities, community and studio settings, and in private practice.

What are your areas of interest in the field?

I have maintained a private practice in art therapy for over 30 years. My specialization is working with individuals who have experienced trauma. I find these clients are excellent candidates for art therapy precisely because the art can provide a means for expressing the inexpressible feelings that are often shut down or pushed away from consciousness in response to traumatic events. It has been exciting in the last 25 years to see that neuroscience research has validated the kind of work we do. Through brain imagery, we now know that the cognitive and executive functioning of the brain is for the most part “off line” when people are recalling their traumas, rendering them essentially “speechless.” This helps explain why traditional verbal therapy is often not enough when working with trauma, and why art (imagery) and other experiential therapies are so effective.

I reached out to you in part because of Suicide Awareness Month. In your private practice do you work with many patients grappling with suicidal thoughts? What are some of the methods you practice in such circumstances?

Any therapist in private practice will have to deal with patients who are struggling with suicidal thoughts from time to time. Negative beliefs and hopelessness can render the individual helpless to combat the urge for self-harm. To work with suicidal thoughts, a clinician must first assess how developed the plan is, and, if the patient is truly in imminent danger of self-harm, hospitalization may be required. But hospitalization has its limits and is only one step.

Beyond the immediate safety needs, I work on resourcing my patients to help them develop other coping strategies so that they can better manage their feelings and find alternate responses. Some interventions might include creating a safety plan with a hierarchy of actions to take, or to come up with a list of resources that can be quickly accessed when the suicidal impulse arises, or helping with a variety of cognitive and behavioral restructuring techniques, or perhaps increasing the frequency of therapy sessions, etc. Sometimes I will recommend a soothing art activity for “homework” such as working in an art coloring book or journal, that can assist with a person feeling grounded and safe. Art can soothe anxiety and help with re-focusing attention to something more positive and less destructive than a suicidal plan.

Are most of the patients you encounter already involved in art? Are they ever skeptical?

It is true that most people think of going to an art therapist because they enjoy making art and are already involved in it somehow. But that is not the only kind of person who will benefit from art therapy.

For example, one man I worked with was also being seen in marriage therapy and was referred to me because it was determined that he needed to access more emotional depth. This man had no apparent interest in art, but agreed to see me as an experiment because art therapy had been recommended. I invited him to work on a picture of simply lines and shapes and just “see what happens.” His first picture, a simple downward sloping line was created in a matter of seconds. But when we held the “picture” up and explored it from a distance, he became struck by the downward motion and then exclaimed: “This is exactly what I have been trying to describe. It looks like my mother’s lap. Empty. She was never able to really hold me!” The image and description of not being held as a child became a fundamental theme in our work together. And within a few months, this patient enrolled in a painting class and began a new appreciation for art.

Can you explain what you hope to achieve with a suicidal patient through art therapy? What changes are you looking to make?

Often the artwork will convey a suicidal feeling of hopelessness or despair long before words are consciously available. The image can provide a means for discussing feelings that are either unclear or difficult to verbalize. Art works tend to be self-referential so we work actively with the images and themes that are produced.

For example, an image of a desolate landscape might signal an empty feeling and suicidal state in the artist. While I do not interpret the image, the patient and I will work together to explore the metaphor and any personal meaning or feelings that are attached. Because the picture is something we can look at together, it gives both artist and therapist an opportunity to “do” something with it. Art therapy can empower the individual to find a solution or create a “preferable ending” in the art. It is interesting to note that creating artwork that challenges the initial feelings of hopelessness will actually affect the neural firing in the brain. The more practice a person has exploring “preferable endings” for example, the more this will result in the brain finding alternatives to self-destructive behavior. So making art can be a good practice for seeking solutions and reducing negative thoughts.

Is there a certain type of patient you think is more suited to art therapy as opposed to other therapy methods?

Anyone who is willing to explore feelings through the process of making art can benefit from art therapy. Some people will naturally be drawn to this kind of therapy — children in particular where their natural language is through art and play.

Adolescents are also good candidates for art therapy because they may be resistant to traditional talk therapies and usually will enjoy working with art materials. I work with adults, however, and maintain that they are still children inside, as it is often an adult embodying that child state coming in to my office. The art helps bypass the defense and intellectualization inherent in verbal language. When a new (adult) patient is referred to me, I often start by asking, “Why do you think art therapy will help?” Right there, I am getting an alliance with the patient by suggesting that I believe that the experiential and creative nature of making art, in the company of an attuned art therapist, will make a difference.

What makes art therapy so powerful?

Art therapy is more than just making nice pictures. In fact, art therapy is more often a process of making ugly or messy pictures that depict a feeling state, not a final product that is all neat and tied together. Art therapy is about that creative process where the client, in the company of an art therapist, is working and re working problems via a range of fluid and variable art materials.

In private practice, I find the spontaneously created art pieces are the most meaningful and often help a person find resolution for specific traumatic experiences. The benefit occurs when the art made facilitates a sense of mastery over the problem. For example, a patient who has experienced years of abuse or neglect in childhood may be able to finally express feelings that had been avoided or pushed out of conscious awareness because they were overwhelming at the time. The images often speak more loudly than words. With the encouragement of the art therapist, difficult feelings can be expressed through making art.

The process varies widely so there is no one way to describe what happens in a session. When a person first faces a blank piece of paper, there might be some resistance or hesitancy to explore feelings so the resultant images may appear tight and controlled as in a line drawing or pencil sketch. But after some trust is established in the therapeutic relationship, the art process can move towards more expressive activity, which would suggest the patient is accessing stronger emotion. Often the patient will begin experimenting with more evocative materials at that point, for example using paint or clay to express feelings like anger, shame or fear. The art therapist is knowledgeable about psychological problems and the use of various art media; the process is flexible and individually focused to support the patient to find materials and techniques that connect with the issues at hand. And as a patient becomes more open to the process and discovers more creative resources within, the art product will also change. In art therapy, there is always that creative edge that keeps the process dynamic and contributes to the process of healing.

Making of a Style Icon: The Stylist Behind Laverne Cox’s Fashion

She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’s ruling the red carpet. Actress Laverne Cox, star of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, wherever she goes, is turning heads and wowing the press with her elegantly unique style.

After being named one of Time‘s 100 Most Influential People, scoring a coveted spot on People‘s Most Beautiful People list, and appearing on numerous magazine covers, it’s hard to keep up with this megastar.

But even a great deal more is going on. Laverne Cox is establishing herself as not just a leading figure promoting the transgender community, but also as a style icon.

It is often thought that behind most exceedingly successful individuals is a person helping navigate the tricky waters of stardom. So who’s the stylist working with Laverne to perfect her sophisticated aesthetic? Christina Pacelli, stylist to Laverne, shares with us the process of elevating someone into style stardom.

As most fashion boys and girls do, this Huntington Beach, California native discovered her love for fashion at a young age. She says she first became fixated on clothes in fourth grade. Back-to‐school‐shopping was the highlight of her year. With a mother from Mexico and a first-generation Italian father, Pacelli says her upbringing was anything but conventional, as she has been on her own and financially autonomous since the tender age of 15.

Clueless‘s Cher and My‐So‐Called‐Life‘s Jared Leto have all provided inspiration to Pacelli, who admires their hard-to-achieve “I don’t give a damn” look.

After studying Communications and Law at UCLA, she began her professional career as an entertainment and lifestyle publicist. She then transitioned to her love of fashion and began apprenticing for stylists such as New York‐based Anna Katsanis, who has styled editorials for major magazines around the world.

Through her publicist relationships, Pacelli was introduced to Laverne and it was fireworks from the start.

Pacelli says:

Laverne and I share the same stylistic approach. She has an admirable sense of fashion, and a great point of view when it comes to personal style and the fashion industry. She is very involved in her styling, which I believe comes through in her looks. In Laverne’s words, ‘I follow the guiding pillars of FFPS in fashion — Fit, Fabric, Proportion and Silhouette. If all are right, then the look will translate well’

But how do all of the buzz-worthy looks come together? From custom Marc Bouwer to Viktor Luna, Cox and Pacelli have procured show‐stopping styles.

Pacelli says:

When Laverne and I first began working together, we briefed one another on our individual stylistic philosophies. With Laverne, it is not simply about wearing a designer garment. What she wears embodies her personality, confidence and her role for the occasion, or it will feel out of place and naturally won’t be worn.

With so many notable moments, Pacelli says that some of her proudest times with Laverne include the 2014 Emmy Awards in custom Marc Bouwer, the Creative Arts Emmys and Entertainment Weekly party in Donna Karan and the White House Correspondents Dinner in Ines Di Santo. Pacelli notes, “Laverne’s style has always been feminine and pretty. Our work together has built upon that, to take her style to non-obvious places and further showcase her confidence, grace, strength and sophistication.”

Landing spots on countless best‐dressed lists, Christina does not disregard the strides they have made together.

Pacelli describes:

She has been called a style icon on the rise. I do not disagree with that. She is making history with her presence in the industry and I do not take the job lightly. As a transgender black woman who has already pioneered so much, and broken barriers, the way Laverne looks and dresses has an impact and influence upon so many people, LGBT or non‐LGBT. People have shared with me they have been moved to tears observing Laverne because of what she stands for and how she inspired them with her visual presence.

Christina herself has been tapped to be featured in a Viacom series, which will air on MTV and Netflix.

As Laverne continues to gain meteoric success and notoriety, it’s clear we have a great deal of fierce fashion to look forward to. And not only will the fashion be beautiful, but Cox and Pacelli will together be defying cultural norms and changing the world’s perception of the transgender community.

“I knew that styling Laverne Cox came with more responsibility than just vanity. She inspires people simply by what she is wearing. And then she speaks and inspires them more. I understand and take my responsibility very seriously. I know eyes are on Laverne from all over the world.”

Trump: ‘Making America Hate Again!’

Trump’s official campaign slogan is “Make America Great Again!” Perhaps he should change it to the headline above.

The Huffington Post has made an editorial decision to put Trump articles in the Entertainment section instead of the political section. This seemed like a good idea at the time.

Admittedly he is the class clown — and the schoolyard bully. Oddly, also the teacher’s pet. But his toxic mix of egotism, cynicism and racism simply isn’t entertaining. It is, however, still a spectacle.

His now infamous tirade about Mexicans being criminals and rapists is well-known.

Recently two cowardly young thugs in Boston allegedly urinated on and used a metal pole to beat a 58-year-old sleeping Hispanic homeless man, fracturing his nose and causing other serious injuries. One of them reportedly told the police “Donald Trump was right, all of these illegals need to be deported.” (Apparently, the two assailants checked his immigration status before brutalizing him.) A news person asked Trump for his reaction, and Trump reportedly said “That would be a shame” adding this remarkable statement, “I will say, the people that are following me are very passionate. They love this country. They want this country to be great again. But they are very passionate. I will say that.”

His supporters chanted “USA! USA! USA!” when some protesters were thrown out of a Trump event in Phoenix — as if they were cheering at Wrestlemania.

This week at a press conference in Iowa, several times Trump ordered Univision anchorman Jorge Ramos, a respected journalist and an American citizen, to “Sit down,” as if Ramos were a dog being ordered by his unkind master to “Sit.” Trump also added to “Go back to Univision.” Then Trump nodded at one of his security guards who escorted Ramos out of the room.

In the hallway, a Trump supporter further humiliated Ramos telling him “Get out of my country.” Ramos responded with restraint, class, and dignity.

The delusional Donald has often claims that he will win the “Hispanic” vote. This assertion might be just another Trump empty promise. A recent Gallop Poll shows among Hispanic voters, he has the highest disapproval rate (65 percent) of any GOP candidate.

Apparently he is looking to carry Asian vote as well. Here’s Trump mocking them and doing a racially stereotypical impersonation of “these people”:

While Trump may not carry Latinos or Asians, he will likely carry the racists’ vote. It isn’t surprising that Trump is receiving endorsements from white supremacy groups and neo-Nazis. David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, has reportedly called Trump the best of the GOP candidates.

In an interview with Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, Trump reportedly said “I don’t need his endorsement; I certainly wouldn’t want his endorsement” and added “I don’t need anyone’s endorsement.” When asked if he would repudiate the endorsement, Trump is quoted as saying “Sure, I would if that would make you feel better.”

That doesn’t make me feel any better.

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The five books on making money online are as follows: Book 1. Business Website, Collect Money, Send Things Book 2. Internet Selling (Sell on Your Website & on the Big Internet Stores) Book 3. Online Classified Ads Book 4. Internet Marketing, Website Optimization (Get Visitors to Your Website) Book 5. Computer-Internet Jobs-Business E-commerce lowers the cost of transmitting information and makes it accessible to everywhere on the planet in under a second. That’s great but that’s all it is, a faster, more accessible means to do business. If your product is not very good and you have problems running your business, e-commerce will not magically make you rich. Many players tried to make money from the internet itself like ebay, amazon, google, etc. but most failed. Many retail internet websites failed but some fared alright, the ones that had a niche market where the products they sold could be easily shipped by a delivery company and already established companies who merely put out a website to enhance their existing business. The major disadvantages of internet sales are as follows: Some things are meant to be sold in person like clothing, a car, flowers, etc. Some things are simply not condusive to being shipped because it costs too much like dog food, garden tools, etc. Customers are picky about some things, they complain a lot and there’s room for fraud. Consider vitamins. There are fakes and cheap knock-offs. If you buy a bottle at your local health food store, you feel safer than buying a bottle over the internet. The shipping costs make some things not amenable to being sold over the internet like small, inexpensive things where the cost of shipping is as much as the product itself. Anything that’s perishable can’t be sold. A big part of buying is impulse. You see something at the mall and buy it. Some products have to be inspected. You can’t get a feel for them over the internet. Some products don’t have enough buyers to justify a websit

Making Therapy Work for You: Have Your Feelings Without Your Feelings Having You

I’ve noticed that most people come in to therapy with some preconception about what to do with their feelings in session: Some believe that venting will help them to heal, others feel that it will be most helpful to remain distanced from their feelings so that they can analyze them. They’re both right. And they’re both wrong. It’s the use of both of these modes in alternation that’s most helpful — though I think that there are better ways to describe them than “venting” and “analyzing.”

We need to value our feelings and use them rather than trying to get rid of them through either venting or analyzing. I’ve found that the best way to do this is to let feelings rise into consciousness, fully experience them, contain them and learn from them, and then decide what to do about them. This means expressing feelings without reacting to them impulsively, and then making conscious decisions about how to live based on what we learn from them.

This whole process could take minutes or years. Some feelings take a long time to fully rise into conscious, and to be fully experienced and fully understood. Others emerge quickly.

This brings up a common misconception about the best way to handle feelings. Many people confuse repression with suppression: Repression is an unconscious way of avoiding disturbing feelings. Suppression, on the other hand, is a healthier tactic in which we make a conscious decision not to focus on something that we already understand. Once you have some sense of why you worry needlessly about something, for instance, it makes perfect sense to delay worrying about that issue, quarantining it until Saturday morning from 10:15 until 10:40 if you need to. It’s not necessarily bad to put a feeling aside if you already understand what you have to learn from it.

One reason that it’s important to carefully explore feelings as they occur in the session is that we often have layers of feeling, and the obvious layer may not be the most significant one: anxiety may sit on top of anger or sadness, and anger may easily cover fear.

Anne, for instance, was furious that her cousin Sandra cancelled her trip to visit her. She knew that Sandra had some serious problems that made it almost impossible to visit, so she could try to be reasonable about it and avoid the feeling rather than lambasting someone who really didn’t deserve it. But she also knew that she tended to become resentful or explode later when she did that. Instead she decided to sit with the feeling, describe it, hold it, see how it felt in her body, and notice the feelings of sadness and fear underneath. She eventually realized that she was very afraid of being alone and forgotten, an old feeling that had little to do with her cousin, and much to do with her past and the way she treated herself. She decided that she needed to make an effort to nurture her relationships with people who had made themselves available, but with whom she hadn’t followed through. And that she needed to thoughtfully and more regularly “visit” her own feelings rather than ignoring them or reacting to them impulsively. This was just one in a series of episodes in which she learned to regulate her affect, to have her feelings without her feelings having her.

Some people have difficulty accessing feeling at all. If this is the case for you, you’ll need to slow down and focus. Focus on the body to see what you can learn from it. Focus on any seemingly insignificant reactions you have toward your therapist. Focus on the incidents during your week in which you felt the greatest degree of happiness or sadness. It’s like slowing down a video to watch the details in slow motion. Or to use an auditory metaphor instead, it’s like a radio signal that’s very faint. You’ll need clear everything else away and listen carefully at first. As you come to identify and recognize the signals, they’ll eventually be easier to hear.

One sure way to sabotage the effectiveness of your therapy is to engage in avoidant and addictive behavior — behavior that allows you to temporarily evade disturbing feelings. If you start to feel something in your session, but then drown it in a binge of drinking, eating or shopping, you won’t get as much from the process. This is not to say that you have to wait to get over your addiction before you begin therapy, but that you may need to focus on the addiction in the early part of your process.

Emotions have a communicative aspect to them — they want something to be witnessed. I’m stressing your response to your own emotions here, but I also want to be clear that there is no substitute for having your emotions seen and empathically received by someone else — in this case your therapist. But they can’t do that if you don’t let them see what you’re going through.

Finally, as we improve our relationship with our difficult feelings, we also find that we can savor the pleasurable ones more easily. And that makes the process of psychotherapy even more worthwhile.

This is the third post in a series about how clients can most effectively use their time in psychotherapy. For an introduction see my post 10 Tips to Make Therapy Work for You, and for a complete description of 10 these tools see my book: I’m Working On It In Therapy.

I’ll be posting next week about how to use the therapeutic relationship. Click “Become a Fan” at the top of this post if you want to make sure you don’t miss it.

Speak Up Chef: The Making of Marc Vetri

Introduced by his friend Mario Batali as a “hero to young people who stutter”, chef Marc Vetri took the stage. He was being honored by the Stuttering Association for the Young and he received his award almost sheepishly, as he smiled out to the packed auditorium. “With the stage lights on me I couldn’t see a single person in the audience. I hadn’t written a speech, but I knew I wanted to thank my parents, my wife and my speech therapist. I knew the story I wanted to tell.” After a couple seconds, he began his speech.

It was an eloquent and humble acceptance speech, one that earned him a standing ovation. More surprisingly perhaps, it was a speech given with the kind of voice we don’t often hear. A voice peppered with blocks of silence and repeated vowels. It was the voice of someone who stutters.

We know that Joe Biden and Jack Welch and Emily Blunt are ‘stutterers’. Many of us can rattle off a couple more names of famous people who stutter, or grew up stuttering. And yet, we rarely, if ever, hear the sound of their stuttered voices. They are held up as examples for young people, examples of what can be achieved if you grow out of your stutter, or learn to tame it. Examples of what is possible if you become largely fluent.

Marc Vetri is a different kind of hero. He is a man who has become a leader in his profession whilst stuttering.

“I was first drawn to the kitchen because I thought it was a place you didn’t have to talk.” He laughs at the memory as he tells me that these days he never stops talking. As well as a nightly prep talk to the 30 man team at his restaurant Vetri, he does radio interviews, appears on TV shows and gives speeches at industry events. “I know that people will listen to me, that they are interested in what I have to say. I don’t think about my speech too much these days.”

Still, he admits that it took a while to achieve that kind of acceptance. “There was a time when I was obsessed with my speech.” On the first food order he called in when he was working at Granita back in the early 90s, he remembers calling the vegetable guy back 10 times to complete the order because the answering machine kept cutting him off. The first time he had to work the expo station in the kitchen he sweated bullets calling out the orders.

And yet, he stuck it out. He kept speaking, kept working, kept desensitizing himself to the situations that scared him. As much as his stutter was a challenge, it also became a driving force in his career. “I believed that I had to work harder to compensate for my speech. I worked as if the guy next to me was working 24 hours to steal my job.”

Walking around Marc’s hometown of Philadelphia, it is clear that all that determination has paid off. Having first opened the critically acclaimed Vetri in 1998, Marc has since won a James Beard award for his cooking and he has opened 5 more restaurants around the city. Signed copies of his three cookbooks line the shelves of local bookstores and the culinary scene in the city gets ‘hotter’ every time one of his protégés opens a new restaurant.

If his stutter has shaped some of that outsize ambition, it is also the keeper of his humility. “I know the guys in my kitchens do impressions of me. One day I asked one of them to do it for me. He was all uncomfortable, kept telling me he’d never make fun of me. Eventually I persuaded him to do it. You know, he was good, too good.”

It is easy to assume that Marc can laugh at his stutter, because he knows how good he has it. He gets to do work he loves, expressing himself through food, and he has a young family that he seems to adore.

Many times we believe that we need to ‘fix ourselves’, that we need to iron out our imperfections before we can be what we want to be. Instead, Marc has reached the height of his profession while stuttering. He proves that you can refuse to let your challenges harness your dreams.

“Yes, And”: What Making an Independent Film Taught Me About Identity, Fear and Self-Worth as a Woman

In acting, the first rule of improvisation is to say, “Yes, AND”, the idea behind it being that a scene can only move forward if you first accept the circumstances around you, and then add to them. “Yes, AND” allows for collaboration. “Yes, AND” fosters imagination. “Yes, AND” instigates progress.

For a long time, my life felt like one “No” after another. I wanted to be an actor but couldn’t even get an audition, never mind an actual role. I was working four jobs and just barely getting by. I was definitely more “starving” than “artist”.

I was losing the “game” that is getting work as an actor. The truth is that I wasn’t trying very hard to play it. I didn’t like the rules. As a woman, I felt like I was expected to live up to an imaginary ideal perpetuated by the oversimplified narrative most female characters are placed into. I remember one particularly painful audition that required all the actresses to bring bikinis with them. Usually I would have fled from kind of request, but it was for a reputable graduate film program so, (against my better judgement) I went. I made it to the “please put your bathing suit on” phase and was then given a scene that required me to violently assault my scene partner. I asked if we could practice once or twice, just to make sure no one got hurt. Or perhaps I could just show my half-naked rage through my words? I was dismissed and received an email a few days later saying that I was “too aristocratic” for the part. I was tempted to reply “Are you sure you didn’t mean ‘too smart’?”

I thought getting an agent would help my situation, but was told again and again that I was not a “type” and therefore un-castable. It would be more accurate to say that I am not a “type” that fits into the mainstream representation of women. Where were the stories and roles that I identified with? I was stuck.

But then I got a text from my good friend, Will Sullivan. It read:

“I want to shoot a movie this summer. All improv. For zero budget. Will you produce and star in it?”

In that moment, the answer seemed obvious to me. YES. Had I ever produced a film before? No. Did I have any idea what this movie was going to be about? Of course not. But what did I have to lose?

So I said Yes. And it was in my power to make it happen. It was time to choose my own narrative.

We decided to make a film about relationships – not about falling in love, but about what it takes to make love last. Will and our cinematographer, Derek Dodge, wrote the story outline, but there was never a set script. It was up to the actors to create their own dialogue and define the arc of each scene. I had the freedom to craft a character who was in a state of change and therefore undefined by any mold. The experience was transformative for me, not only as an actor and first time producer, but as a young woman who felt like she needed to re-define her sense of self. It scared me, so I knew it was important.

My greatest obstacle has always been fear. Fear of imperfection, fear of being wrong, fear of failing. This project taught me that there is no better cure for fear than action. As we hurtled towards production, I oscillated between thrill and absolute terror. I had no idea what I was doing but I had to do it anyway. Everyday I woke up feeling like I was in full relevé on the edge of a cliff. The only way to forward was to jump. There were moments of soaring and moments of falling hard on my face. I learned, though, that even if I fell, at least I had found the ground. I could get up and keep going. Three days before our shoot started, I cut off all my hair. I did it for the part, but I also did it for me. While the deed itself was superficial, it symbolized the letting go of an image I felt I was expected to fit into. I was released from who I thought I should be, and free to figure out who I could be.

What started as a text message is now a feature film, That’s Not Us, set to be released later this year. Making it was a gift of self-discovery – as a leader, as a woman, as an artist, and as an imperfect being who still has much to learn. I had the privilege of being able to make mistakes and learn by doing. To me, that is the true essence of independent film. It’s about creating work on your own terms, exploding the mold, and saying “yes, and” to the opportunities that come with attempting the unknown.

That’s Not Us premieres at the Inside Out Film Festival in Toronto on May 23rd, 2015. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, or visit their website at www.thatsnotus.com

Bakery Goofs By Making ‘My Little Tony’ Cake For Birthday Party

An Italian bakery has egg on its face after confusing a request for a “My Little Pony” cake for one featuring an obscure crooner named “Little Tony.”

When the employees of a pastry shop in Gangi, Sicily, were asked to make a birthday cake for a 9-year-old girl’s birthday party, they mistakenly heard “My Little Tony,” instead of “My Little Pony,” the Telegraph reports.

Consequently, the girl’s cake featured a bouffant-haired singer in a white jacket, not a bright pink pony with a blue mane.

The singer on the cake, “Little Tony” Ciacci, was an Elvis-style Italian singer popular in Great Britain and Italy in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Since the girl had never heard of “Little Tony,” officials for Codacons, Italy’s consumer association, said the girl and her family would be within their rights to sue the bakery for a lot of dough, according to the Telegraph.

How These Women Are Making $30,000+ Selling Used Clothes

Carrie Bradshaw‘s classic quip about liking her money where she can see it (hanging right in her closet) might have been said with a hint of sarcasm, but there’s actually some truth behind it. Ever since the first rummage sale back in the 1800s (organized by shipyards clearing out unclaimed cargo), people have loved selling their used stuff. It got way easier with the advent of the Internet, and now you can download a half dozen different apps to list last season’s buys all while having a glass of pinot grigio from the comfort of your own couch. You’ve heard of eBay, ShopHers, The Real Real, and other resale companies, but how about Threadflip, the latest site where its power sellers are making bank—like annual-salary-level cash.

consignment-items

These are the sort of items and brands that do well on resale sites, all available new at Nordstrom.

“Selling stuff has definitely affected my shopping. I take resale value into consideration when making a purchase,” explained Mariam M., a 27-year-old boutique owner in Scottsdale, Arizona, who’s pocketed nearly $ 35,000 from Threadflip. “I try not to spend on trendy pieces but put my money toward wardrobe staples and investment pieces that I can resell should I get tired of them.” Mariam grew up with an aunt who owned a consignment store. The boutique owner sold on eBay before moving over to Threadflip, which she prefers because of the social aspect (you can heart items, leave comments, and see whose closet you’re shopping). And while plenty of her listings are her own pieces, she said she also hits up sample sales to find stuff she plans on reselling from the get-go.

Tiffany S. has made about $ 44,000 on Threadflip since signing up and says she intends to double that this year (she also sells on four other sites). “I sell high- and low-end, and I share, list, pack, ship, and handle the money. I’m a full-fledged, tax-reporting LLC because I’ve made so much money. The opportunity to make six figures is there,” the 37-year-old stay-at-home North Carolina mom said. “The items I’m selling are mine. I do not shop thrift, my inventory is not from Goodwill. I buy it, and I buy myself a lot. I sell when I get bored.”

Power sellers also pay attention to timing, much like a traditional store would. “I sell certain items depending on the season, and I’ll hold items until I feel it will sell, usually prior to major holidays,” shared Caroline G., a 51-year-old former IT pro who now stays at home with her kids and sells items on three different resale sites. She’s made about $ 34,000 on Threadflip so far. “I’ve been in the game for 20-plus years and would put stuff in consignment stores but found it took a long time to sell, if at all.” She moved online to find a bigger audience and now sells with the mind-set of a boutique owner.

threadflip-resale-app

“Great customer service makes people want to buy from you again,” she explained, revealing that she does her best to ship the day after the purchase is made. “It’s important to build up a great selling record, which takes time. Don’t get discouraged if things don’t sell right away.” Since repeat buyers are a big thing for these women, they cultivate relationships with things like handwritten thank-you notes slipped inside carefully packaged items.

“I take advantage of the social aspect of Threadflip, and if I list an item that I think one of my previous buyers would like, I message them letting them know,” Mariam said. “I love writing notes for packages and sometimes adding extra little gifts.”

Another common thread between sellers was that even if posting and packing items is regarded as a day job, it’s also a passion project to fund their own shopping. “The beauty of it all is that you can sell pieces, get your investment back, and reinvest, a.k.a. shop some more. It’s a growing market that I’m very happy to be a part of,” said 32-year-old New Jersey financial operations manager Stephanie, who’s made $ 28,000 on Threadflip. Her strategy involves shopping for brands that age well and hold their value. “I’ve been a collector of Louis Vuitton since age 18 and will continue to do so for the rest of my life due to resale value and quality. If it’s a big-ticket designer item and I can’t find it at 20 to 30 percent off retail and in excellent condition, then I’ll purchase it at retail. Otherwise, I prefer preowned in order to save some money.”

Want to get in the game? Here are some of their top tips for selling whatever you’ve gotten tired of.

Embrace variety.
“The market is saturated with Coach and Michael Kors, so I like that my inventory is always varied,” Tiffany said. “I have some of everything.” Don’t think that just because a brand is smaller it won’t sell. It’s the Web: People are hunting for specifics.

Take care of your stuff.
All the sellers we spoke with confirmed that better condition brings in higher prices, so taking care of pieces, from when you buy them to how you store them until they’re listed, is vital.

Pay attention to the photos you take.
The better the pictures you post, the more interest you’ll create with shoppers. “Take clear pictures of the front, back, sides, interior, exterior, and any hardware, logos, and serial numbers,” Caroline explained. “I also include pictures of any wear and damage as well.” Skip messy backgrounds when snapping photos, opting for clear, simple surfaces.

Be available to shoppers.
For success on resale apps, think of yourself as a business who wants to make customers happy. Many of the top sellers we spoke to said it’s important to answer questions, ship quickly, and to make listings informative. Consider doing free shipping and allowing people to make offers.

Be realistic about pricing.
“Do your fair research on resale value before listing,” Stephanie said. “If that pair of jeans is selling for $ 25 on other websites and you list at $ 100 simply because you purchased them for $ 200, you’re wasting your time.” A quick browse will make some things obvious: Designer bags hold their value; pricey denim doesn’t.

Be ruthless about letting your stuff go.
Want to make a substantial amount of cash? You’ve got to be willing to part with your goods. If you’re entertaining any thought about putting it up for sale, do it. “If you’re not using it, why not see if someone else might want it?” Tiffany asked. Stephanie operates under the same idea and resists getting attached to things. “I purchased a gorgeous preowned but completely new Louis Vuitton cuff and only used it once in three months. It’s a total beauty, but I lost interested and decided to sell,” she said. “It’s such a large investment to just let sit there without using. I can sell it and buy something else that I’d enjoy more.”

Bill Murray Played The Mayor On ‘Parks & Rec,’ Making Amy Poehler’s Dreams Come True

In the stretch toward its final episode, “Parks and Recreation” is pulling out all the stops. On Tuesday night, that meant a little old guest appearance by Bill Murray. Yes, BILL MURRAY was on “Parks and Recreation.”

The actor appeared as Walter Gunderson, the deceased mayor of Pawnee — a character widely referenced throughout the show’s history but never before depicted. The mayor spoke to his residents from the grave in a little video message, and had an open casket at his funeral.

Getting Murray to play the mayor of Pawnee has been a dream of Amy Poehler and the “Parks and Rec” cast and crew for years. Back in 2011, Poehler mentioned her wish to cast him in an interview at PayleyFest and during an appearance on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” She brought it up it again in an interview with Entertainment Weekly at Sundance in 2013.

“I want Bill Murray to play the mayor,” she said “And I just dream about it every night. I whisper it to a bird and then I open the window and the bird flies away.”

Show creator Mike Schur told Entertainment Weekly that when they did finally manage to snag the actor, he was the perfect addition on set.

“He was just the most delightful person,” he said. “Not only was he incredibly complimentary of the show, he went around to every one of the actors and told them how great they were and cited specific episodes and moments. He hung out on the set for three hours, watching us shoot the show.”

The man, the myth, the legend.

The power of online auctions is attracting hundreds of thousands-if not millions-of users who want to turn their eBay hobbies into profitable businesses. While turning an eBay hobby into an eBay business might look easy, making that business profitable is much more difficult. Not enough sellers treat their eBay sales as a business, and subsequently are disappointed in the results. To launch a successful and profitable eBay business, the detailed instructions in this book will show you how to get started. It will help you determine what kind of business you want to run, write an action-oriented business plan, establish an effective accounting system, set up a home office, obtain starting inventory, arrange initial funding, establish an eBay presence, and arrange for automated post-auction management. This book is a step-by-step guide for anyone serious about making money from their eBay sales. Unlike other computer-oriented titles, this is a straight-ahead business book that shows how to set up and run different types of eBay businesses, and how to maximize sales and profits while doing so. This book includes a section titled “Choosing Your eBay Business” that details six different types of eBay businesses you can start. Included in this section is a chapter on eBay Trading Assistants (AKA drop-off stores or consignment stores), which is the newest form of an eBay business.
