Mark Hamill Reveals He Once Suggested Arnold Schwarzenegger ‘Lose His Accent’ and Change His Name

Sometimes those from galaxies far, far away don’t know best.

Mark Hamill revealed on Twitter, Saturday, that he gave some misguided advice to an up-and-coming star back in the day: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Arnold Schwarzenegger asked me for advice when he was just starting out,” the Star Wars actor, 66, tweeted on Saturday. “I told him to lose his accent for a wider range of roles & to change his last name since no one could pronounce it.”

Hamill added of Schwarzenegger, 71, “He did the opposite & became one of the biggest stars EVER.”

Schwarzenegger responded on Twitter, however, that he does not fault Hamill for the old guidance.

Schwarzenegger, who underwent open-heart surgery in March, went on to star in films like the Terminator franchise and Total Recall, and was eventually elected governor of California — with his Austrian accent and his last name, of course.

Mark E. Smith, frontman of the English post-punk act The Fall, has died. He was 60 years old.

“It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith,” the band’s manager posted in a statement on Facebook Wednesday. “He passed this morning at home. A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.”

A Manchester, England, native, Smith launched The Fall in 1976. Over the years the band released 32 studio albums, most recently July 2017’s New Facts Emerge, on which Smith was the sole remaining founding member. Though they found minor success with their original singles in the ’80s, The Fall is best remembered for their cover of the Kinks’s “Victoria.”

Several English musicians — including Lisa Stansfield and Billy Bragg — took to social media to pay their respects.

Mark Hamill has responded to worried fans on social media after he was spotted in a wheelchair at a New York airport on Tuesday.

Replying to a fan who asked if he was having health problems, the Star Wars actor wrote that he “tried the old ‘wheelchair trick’” to avoid autograph dealers “who constantly badger” him and his family.

Arriving to the airport at 5 a.m., Hamill was spotted slouched in a wheelchair with a wide brimmed hat pulled low over his face. He was also carrying his dog on his lap.

The actor seemed to be in good health during an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show Tuesday, where he spoke about the death of his Star Wars costar Carrie Fisher.

“She’s like an irreplaceable member of the family, but the whole world feels that way,” Hamill said of Fisher, who died last December at the age of 60. “We are all sort of mourning her. I always think of her in the present tense. I don’t think of her in the past. Any time you were with her it was just fun.”

Hamill also seemed to be healthy and in good spirits while surprising guests at Disneyland just two weeks ago. The actor popped up on the new ride, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, and chatted with fans.

Hamill reprises his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, hitting theaters Dec. 15.

TROPHY HUSBAND: The prince of minimalist design, John Pawson, has a long history of setting some big challenges for the craftsmen at Swarovski, and the crystal trophy with its convex lens that he’s designed for the 2017 Fashion Awards in London is the latest in a long line.
“It’s the most simple of forms — a cylinder — but it’s only faceted on one side, which is unusual,” said Pawson from his basement kitchen in London’s Holland Park, where he and his wife Catherine hosted a dinner to mark the trophy’s reveal ahead of the awards, which will take place in partnership with Swarovski on Dec. 4 at the Royal Albert Hall.
There was a problem with the colors, too: Each crystal cylinder has a lacquer “thread” of a different color streaking through the center. Because it’s impossible to put certain materials through crystal, Pawson and Swarovski had to create an acrylic tube to hold the colors — which include gold, silver, platinum and ebony — in place.
The two have traveled this winding road before: In 2011, Pawson created a work called “Perspectives,” which involved a Swarovski-made concave crystal meniscus — the largest lens possible to manufacture. It was a feat of

Mark Ballas and BC Jean‘s bohemian chic wedding certainly looked picture-perfect, but one major element of their ceremony didn’t go according to plan.

PEOPLE Now recently caught up with the Dancing with the Stars pro ahead of the season 25, and he opened up about what exactly went awry during their Nov. 25 nuptials.

“I teared up when she walked around the corner and I saw her,” he recalled. “She walked the aisle to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen, which is one of my all-time favorites.”

So far, so good? Not quite.

“It was funny, because they played the wrong version — they were meant to play the symphonic string version, but they played the real version,” he said. “So all of a sudden she turns the corner and we hear: ‘Is this ?‘ ”

“Freddie ’s voice is booming through my ceremony!” he added with a laugh. “I turned to Derek at the time, my best friend, I was like, ‘They’re playing the wrong version!’ He goes, ‘Relax, man. You love Queen.’ I was like, ‘I do love Queen.’ ”

Of course, all’s well that ends well — and Ballas, 31, dissolved into tears pretty much the second he saw his bride.

And in the months sine tying the knot, the happy couple actually learned something new about each other.

“Back when we were dating, we pretty much knew everything there was to know about each other — we’d traveled together, we’d lived together, we’d been through ups and downs together,” he said. “We’d kind of worked on all the things that we loved in our relationship and that we knew we needed to work on. We fought for this relationship, and that’s why it feels so solid now, but we never really spent much time in the kitchen. Then we became obsessed with these cooking shows and trying to eat healthier, and she’s become this amazing chef.”

“I come home and she’s like, ‘Look at these stuffed peppers I made!’ ” he added with a laugh. “She’s making incredible meals at home. I was like, ‘Who are you?!’ ”

DILARA’S PROPAGANDA: Luisa Via Roma’s Andrea Panconesi headed to London Thursday night to mark the launch of an exclusive capsule with the emerging designer Dilara Findikoglu.
The Florence-based retailer fully embraced Findikoglu’s rebellious spirit for the evening, hosting a dinner in a grand room at East London’s Masonic Hall, complete with rock music and withered roses scattered on the dinner table.

“We’ve always supported young designers since Day One, and Dilara presents the new generation, a very specific part of the young generation,” said Panconesi, chief executive officer at Luisa Via Roma.
The launch of the capsule, which currently consists of a red tracksuit set, will be followed by other products in the future. It is part of a new initiative by the Italian retailer called LVR Editions that kicked off on June 16.

Chanel Scores Win in Legal Fight to Protect CC Monogram Mark

LOGO LOCK: Chanel on Tuesday scored a victory in its fight to protect its trademark double-C logo.
The European Union’s General Court invalidated a decision by the board of appeal of the European Union Intellectual Property Office, or EUIPO, in a case pitting the French luxury firm against Li Jing Zhou, a resident of Spain, and Golden Rose 999 Srl, a company established in Rome.
In 2010, Zhou registered a symbol consisting of two interlocking S shapes, which Chanel sought to have canceled on the grounds that it strongly resembled its monogram, which has been a registered trademark in France since 1989. The EUIPO’s board in 2014 rejected its request for a revocation.
But the Luxembourg-based General Court estimated that the two drawings had “remarkable similarities,” adding that Zhou’s design could be perceived as a creation inspired by the idea of the Chanel monogram, which could potentially create confusion in the minds of consumers.
The Luxembourg court annulled the EUIPO’s decision but rejected Chanel’s request to have the contested trademark declared invalid, saying this was not within the realm of its competencies. The EUIPO has been ordered to pay costs in the case.

A machine gun-wielding model parades across the screen of the Crosby Street Hotel’s subterranean screening room in New York on Tuesday. The seductive female is clad in nothing more than a pair of New Republic by Mark McNairy shoes from their 2018 men’s collection and, to maintain modesty, two thick black censorship bars bouncing along with each effervescent step.
This 12-minute film produced by the men’s wear designer featured a parade of women in the buff displaying affordably priced footwear from slip-on sandals to rose-colored boat shoes.
“It’s about shoes so I didn’t want to dress models in clothes to take away from the shoes so I decided to use naked people,” explained McNairy in his unhurried North Carolinian drawl. “Then I decided people would rather see naked girls than naked guys — and that’s just it.”
Once immersed in preppy design, the former creative director of J. Press has in recent years eschewed the Ivy League-inspired aesthetic he carried on while at the venerable American label.
“With respect to the heritage and tradition, I am by no means Ivy League,” continued the 56-year-old. “I appreciate elements of [that style], but I like workwear, military, punk and hippies.”

Mark Jensen Joins VK Nagrani

‘Get Out’ Has Crossed The Coveted $100 Million Mark At The Box Office

Kong: Skull Island” stomped all over the box office this weekend, surpassing forecasts with an estimated $ 61 million North American debut. But it’s “Get Out” that we should be celebrating: Jordan Peele’s horror satire crossed the coveted $ 100 million threshold, the second non-franchise film to do so this year after M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split.” 

With a $ 21 million intake bringing its total grosses to $ 111.1 million, “Get Out” is a Hollywood success story through and through. Basking in near-universal acclaim, the thriller about a black photographer (Daniel Kaluuya) meeting his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) sinister family has coasted on organic hype. This is its third weekend in theaters, making it the fastest $ 100 million earner for Blumhouse, the horror-oriented production company that also funded “Split,” the “Paranormal Activity” franchise and the “Insidious” series. “Get Out” cost a modest $ 5 million to make, rendering the accomplishment particularly notable given original adult movies’ ongoing financial struggles. 

Grosses for the reboot “Kong: Skull Island” and the Wolverine threequel “Logan” also come with surprises. Warner Bros. expected “Kong,” which has seen generally favorable reviews, to open around $ 50 million, so its $ 61 million domestic total is a major victory. That sum is on par with the previous “King Kong” adaptation, directed by Peter Jackson, which debuted at $ 62 million in 2005, when adjusted for inflation. As we wrote last week, King Kong remains one of Hollywood’s most reliable properties

Similarly, “Logan” still has claws at the box office. Most superhero flicks tend to see steep second-weekend declines because the fanboys and -girls rush to see them right away. But “Logan,” the restrained “X-Men” installment starring Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, made about $ 38 million, a decent coup. Its current totals sit at $ 152.7 million in domestic grosses and $ 437.7 million worldwide.

“The Shack” and “The Lego Batman Movie” round out the weekend’s Top 5. 

“Moonlight,” which enjoyed its loftiest grosses last weekend following a surprising best picture win at the Oscars, collected another $ 1 million. It has now made a collective $ 27 million, a remarkable figure for an independent film that cost $ 1.5 million to make.

Celebrities Should Shut Up About Politics, Says Mark Wahlberg

Marky Mark is not turning to his Hollywood peers for their political commentary. 

Mark Wahlberg recently spoke with Task and Purpose, a publication aimed at veterans, about celebrities and politics. In his opinion, they should keep their mouths shut. 

“A lot of celebrities did, do, and shouldn’t [talk about politics],” he said. “You know, it just goes to show you that people aren’t listening to that anyway. They might buy your CD or watch your movie, but you don’t put food on their table. You don’t pay their bills. A lot of Hollywood is living in a bubble. They’re pretty out of touch with the common person, the everyday guy out there providing for their family.”

Wahlberg, who grew up one of nine children in Boston, said that his roots keep him grounded. 

“Me, I’m very aware of the real world. I come from the real world and I exist in the real world. And although I can navigate Hollywood and I love the business and the opportunities it’s afforded me, I also understand what it’s like not to have all that.”

Back in September, the actor, who is currently promoting his new film “The Patriot” about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, hinted at supporting Hillary Clinton

“Let’s just say that I am very open to having our first female president,” he said. “I am very open to that.”

Mark Wahlberg Will Slap the Crap Out of You

In no way am I connected to the movie business. Nor do I regularly hang out or party with actors and actresses. Moreover, I’ve never written a single screenplay or TV show. Indeed, the only scripts I’ve ever had produced were a stage plays, performed at obscure Southern California theaters, the kind of material–unlike movie and TV scripts–that earns you little money or recognition.

That said, over the years I have gotten to know several very talented actors and actresses (with impressive bodies of work to their credit), a couple of whom I might even modestly describe as “friends.”

One thing I’ve noticed about actors is the emphasis they place on a career’s trajectory. Which is why they don’t like hearing fans gush over performances that were done years earlier, when they were just starting out.

Because actors like to think they’ve gotten better over time, they seek praise for performances that were done more recently–performances that were done when they were far more accomplished in their craft–rather than stuff they did as “kids.”

For instance, even though I’ve never met him, we can assume Michael Douglas is not going to appreciate having adoring fans tell him that, in their opinion, his best work was “The Streets of San Francisco.” Just as you don’t tell Paul McCartney that your favorite Beatles’ song was “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” you don’t tell Michael Douglas that his best work was an ancient TV cop series.

Similarly, we’ve all heard stories about Mark Wahlberg. We’ve all heard accounts of how furious he gets when someone dares mention his early days as boy band performer, “Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.” You want to get your ass kicked by a celebrity? Go up to Mark Wahlberg, point out how much shorter he seems in real life, remind him of how embarrassing those underpants commercials were, and then demand he sign your autograph book as “Marky Mark.”

Another example: Now that Dwayne Johnson wants to be known as “Dwayne Johnson,” you don’t go up to him and insist he sign your book as “The Rock.” Dwayne wants to be cast in serious dramatic roles in the future, and knows you don’t get those parts–you don’t get to play Willy Loman or King Lear–when you’re called “The Rock.”

The same goes for Rick Schroder, formerly known as “Ricky” Schroder. If he continues to mature and grow as an actor, expect his next stop to be “Richard” Schroder (or if cast in a biopic as Pancho Villa, “Ricardo” Schroder)

Which makes us appreciate those entertainers who stubbornly cling to their boyish names: Johnny Carson, Johnny Depp, Johnny Mathis. Just as not every John should be a “Johnny” (Johnny Wayne? Johnny Lennon? Johnny Wilkes Booth?), not every Johnny should be reduced to a “John.” Can we imagine Ed McMahon introducing the host of the Tonight Show as John Carson. “Heeeeerrrrrrres, John!”

So if you ever run into Sally Field, don’t make the mistake of saying you liked her more as “The Flying Nun” than as “Norma Rae,” because all that’s going to do is hurt her feelings. The same for Sean Connery. Instead of mentioning “Goldfinger,” tell him you loved him in “Finding Forrester.” And if you’ve seen both films, you won’t be lying.

Un-True Detective: HBO Noir Series Misses the Mark

Although the second season of True Detective on HBO has a lot of the same names attached to it behind the camera, the new iteration of the title which just premiered bears scant resemblance to last year’s bravura bayou noir mini-series.

Season one was strikingly original — set in hazy, humid and swampy Louisiana — a venue unfamiliar to most Americans, it starred a Southern tag team so captivating that even if Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson had Confederate Stars and Bars license plates viewers still would have loved them. McConnaughey and Harrelson played incredibly intense, driven and seriously flawed police detectives and human beings. Awash in cheap bourbon, cheap women and even cheaper beer, their reprehensible self-destructive behavior was both pitiful and pitiable. And there is a difference between season one and season two. That McConaughey and Harrelson were on a crusade to find the creepy ritual killers of young girls made you root for them every step of the way. That you couldn’t see the plot twists coming made for riveting television. Season two has no such redemptive underpinnings.

In season two, the producers have also spared no expense to bring us a group of big Hollywood stars — probably too many and not the right ones. Where McConaughey and Harrelson were a believable couple, season two has four key characters seemingly only connected by the murder of someone we probably will never care about. In season one, rescuing virginal girls being flayed alive for a pseudo religion is something everyone can get behind. Punishing their captors and killers is something everyone can root for. In Season two we have a dead corrupt City Manager of a tiny industrial Southern California armpit. Why become emotionally invested in that?

Series Creator/Writer Nic Pizzolatto dishes out three troubled dissolute Southern California cops played by Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch. Thrown into the mix is a quasi-legal casino owner and would be shtarker (tough criminal mastermind) played by Vince Vaughn. On paper, this should be a winning quartet, but the instruments are out of tune and the metaphorical musical score, i.e., the plot and the script is never going to make the Billboard Top 10.

Farrell, who was brilliant in the 2008 film In Bruges as a damaged neophyte incompetent hitman, is plunged in True Detective into the depths of self-despair and self destruction after selling his soul to Vaughn. Wallowing in Johnny Walker Blue Label, there’s nothing about his character that is remotely redeeming or worth rooting for. Farrell’s American accent just isn’t as interesting as when he speaks like a Brit or an Irishman.

McAdams is also asked to wallow in a self-loathing so palpable that it’s just shocking. The producers took the glam Queen Bee from Mean Girls and butched her out to an almost unrecognizable degree — and also to a non-credible level. She’s hard to believe in the role and is stretched well beyond her many talents. She can’t pull off the Charlize Theron mud-and-blood slathered tough trash role.

Kitsch seems to have peaked dramatically as Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights, nothing he’s done since evinces the same level of passion and pathos. His beefcake starring roles in John Carter (the Water World of its time) and Battleship in 2012 ran aground faster than a deep keeled yacht in three-foot waters. In True Detective he’s suffering (naturally) from the psychic after effects of military service and is also looking for ways to punish and even maybe even kill himself. Kitsch is so remote and introverted that even his steamy hot girlfriend can’t crack through, so why should the audience bother?

Finally, Vaughn, utterly likable and believable in such wonderful comedies as Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball and Old School, is as miscast in a “heavy” mob boss role as Tom Hanks would be if he were also asked to play a gangster. Vaughn is a terrific comedic actor because of his easy sardonic wit and everyman demeanor. Henry Fonda could convincingly play evil (and against type) in Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In The West. Vaughn is no Henry Fonda, but then Fonda really couldn’t do comedy that well either and he didn’t try very often. In suppressing his natural likability, Vaughn becomes not just unlikable but also uninteresting.

Pizzolatto in situating season two in Southern California begs comparison with scads of other L.A.-based noir classics such as L.A. Confidential, Chinatown and Double Indemnity, to name but a few — and True Detective comes up short and wanting in comparison. Where season one nailed rural Louisiana, season two misses the mark in Southern California. Season two is the wrong story, with the wrong characters and the wrong actors playing against type unsuccessfully. Let’s hope that Pizzolatto wasn’t a one-hit wonder with season one.

The Lower East Side has always been a playground for oddballs, creative types who diverge from Manhattan’s mold. It’s a quirky neighborhood filled with idiosyncrasies and secrets stuffed in blocks and buildings. These days, south of Union Square is trending, a wonderland of bars, movie houses, and restaurants that offer a refreshing contrast to Midtown. But don’t be fooled: the Lower East Side has a legacy of hosting the mysteries that lie behind closed doors and inside our imaginations.

Mark Dendy’s NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace shares marrow with the LES, a skeleton that rivets freaks and geeks with nostalgia. At Joe’s Pub last week, the work was provocative, wild, and weird. Dendy is celebrated for mixing genres, incorporating spoken word into dance and crossing over from eccentric experimentation to Broadway to ballet. And what exactly was NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace? I have absolutely no idea, and perhaps that’s what made it so compelling.

When I told my friends that I was headed to the Public on Wednesday, May 6, they assumed that it was for Hamilton, the musical hit of the season. They were, of course, wrong; I was off to an intimate, candlelit room to watch ghosts emerge from their graves. Ghosts of New York’s bourgeoisie. Ghosts of the gay movement. Shakespeare’s ghosts. It was all haunting in its absurdity.

NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace narrated the history of the street where the Public sits in its majesty. Dendy took no precautions for political correctness, and with a fake hand job and a strip tease onstage, there were plenty of moments when the audience squirmed. He also approached difficult issues like gentrification and the AIDS epidemic in the ’80s, which didn’t make for typical mealtime pleasantry. As spectators munched on hamburgers and fries, Christopher Bell gyrated as a gay exotic dancer with the kind of fervor that harbors sexual frustration and anger brought on by fear of disease. As they sipped on a jug of beer, Abigail Levine twirled aimlessly, mocking Taylor Swift’s “Welcome to New York” and its whitewashed sentimentality. Leslie Cuyjet ran around as a realtor, decrying artists for making New York “cool” and contributing to rising rents. Meanwhile, Danté Brown danced in a hoodie, representing racism until, with one ice-cold beat of a gunshot, he collapsed like the blow of a hammer.

Certainly, the piece felt scattered. It interfaced with so many dialogues that no one stood out for its urgency. Nevertheless, NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace had a strange allure. Dendy thought a lot about the current state of New York and how it differs from decades passed. He managed to infuse his movement with meaning, and few could belittle the performance as sheer entertainment. It forced the viewers to question, which is almost always good in a culture industry that so often dictates what we do unconsciously. And it was still pleasant at times because Dendy’s dancers, especially Mei Yamanaka and Bell, were intoxicating.

Would I go again? Absolutely not. It’s never nice to sit on edge, uncomfortable with the honesty of a situation. That’s what makes NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace important: it confounds without mercy.

I once had a philosophy professor who said that when you’re confused, it means you’re getting it. If so, Manhattanites have a lot to learn from Dendy and his stint at Joe’s Pub.

Nowhere is the human being more truly revealed than in his letters. Not in literary letters-prepared with care, and the thought of possible publication-but in those letters wrought out of the press of circumstances, and with no idea of print in mind. A collection of such documents, written by one whose life has become of interest to mankind at large, has a value quite aside from literature, in that it reflects in some degree at least the soul of the writer. The beginnings of that life were sufficiently unpromising. The family was a good one, of old Virginia and Kentucky stock, but its circumstances were reduced, its environment meager and disheartening. The father, John Marshall Clemens-a lawyer by profession, a merchant by vocation-had brought his household to Florida from Jamestown, Tennessee, somewhat after the manner of judge Hawkins as pictured in The Gilded Age. Florida was a small town then, a mere village of twenty-one houses located on Salt River, but judge Clemens, as he was usually called, optimistic and speculative in his temperament, believed in its future. Salt River would be made navigable; Florida would become a metropolis. He established a small business there, and located his family in the humble frame cottage where, five months later, was born a baby boy to whom they gave the name of Samuel-a family name-and added Langhorne, after an old Virginia friend of his father. His schooling was brief and of a desultory kind. It ended one day in 1847, when his father died and it became necessary that each one should help somewhat in the domestic crisis. His brother Orion, ten years his senior, was already a printer by trade. Pamela, his sister; also considerably older, had acquired music, and now took a few pupils. The little boy Sam, at twelve, was apprenticed to a printer named Ament. His wages consisted of his board and clothes-“more board than clothes,” as he once remarked to the writer. Mark David Chapman, John Lennon’s Killer, Sorry For Being ‘An Idiot’

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — John Lennon’s imprisoned killer says he still gets letters about the pain he caused in his pursuit of notoriety nearly 34 years ago.

“I am sorry for causing that type of pain,” Mark David Chapman told a parole board last week, according to a transcript released Wednesday. “I am sorry for being such an idiot and choosing the wrong way for glory.” It was Chapman’s eighth appearance before a parole board. In again denying his release, the three-member panel said it would “so deprecate the serious nature of the crime as to undermine respect for the law.”

Chapman fired five shots on Dec. 8, 1980, outside the Dakota apartment house where Lennon lived on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, striking the ex-Beatle four times. After pleading guilty to second-degree murder, Chapman was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life in prison.

Last week, he told the parole board members that he would understand if they denied him release based solely on the number of people he hurt.

“Many, many people loved him. He was a great and talented man and they are still hurting,” Chapman, 59, said. “I get letters so that’s a major factor. It’s not a regular crime.”

Chapman, who is at the Wende Correctional Facility, east of Buffalo, can try again for release in two years.

Eagles Soar Past $ 145 Million Worldwide

Having been in existence for almost five decades, the iconic American band the Eagles continue to surprise and mesmerize, selling out multi-night runs at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Inglewood’s Forum and other high profile venues. Over the past year, the group has taken in over $ 145 million dollars in ticket sales, a staggeringly high number and testament to the impact this California group had not only on pop and FM radio, but also the music scene of the ’70s and even pop culture.

Though the Eagles left their own impressive mark as a musical tour de force, their camaraderie with contemporaries such as Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, the late Dan Fogelberg, J.D. Souther, Jack Tempchin, Randy Newman, Andrew Gold, Karla Bonoff, and the late, great Warren Zevon created what came to be known as the Southern California sound.

Collectively, these acts immortalized the idyllic SoCal lifestyle that spread across the San Fernando Valley, weaved its way through artist-friendly Laurel Canyon, and partied at beach towns such as Venice and Santa Monica. Scores of bands and singer-songwriters block vocal’d their own backgrounds to mimic Eagles harmonies; try finding a country record over the last thirty-five years without at least a hint of ol’ Don Henley and Glenn Frey layering. And though most don’t make the association, their fallout also can be found in youth culture films like Fast Times At Ridgemont High whose classic soundtrack ranged from taking an Eagles approach (even featuring Don Henley on “Love Rules”) to New Wave.

The current “History of the Eagles'” tour–via music and anecdotes–traces the various chapters of this important American band, journaling its climb from salad days to huge international success. Considering that history includes worldwide album sales of over 120 million, five #1 singles, six Grammy® awards, and the biggest selling album of all time–Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975–these Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have left more than a footprint on music history; the Eagles totally kicked its ass.

A Conversation with Eagles’ Manager, Irving Azoff

Mike Ragogna: Hey Irving. What do you think it is about the Eagles that is so iconic that they can just keep going decade after decade?

Irving Azoff: Timeless songs, consistent live delivery and picking the right times and places to do things.

MR: And the Eagles became pretty popular worldwide as well.

IA: That’s a tribute to how all through their career, they were willing to go overseas and work it. But also, these songs translate. They were kings in a day when you could appeal to everyone. I think the difference now is that it’s hard for anybody to get that big because everybody appeals to a certain segment of the audience. Back in the old days when we had hits, you’d hear a Stevie Wonder and then you’d hear a Marvin Gaye and then you’d hear an Eagles. They were the beneficiaries. The songs have stood the test of time, and that, to me, explains the worldwide popularity. We just put Australia and New Zealand tickets on sale and it’s just f**king mammoth. It’s incredible.

MR: You’ve been there right from the beginning with the Eagles and artists such as the late Dan Fogelberg. What did you originally see in them?

IA: Glenn Frey arrived after we met, he handed me a T-shirt that said “Phone Power” and he was wearing a T-shirt that said “Song Power.” To me, that just summed up from the beginning what would set them apart from every other rock band. They also made a conscious effort to not be who they weren’t, in everything from the way they dressed on stage to the way we didn’t put pictures of the guys on the album cover because it was a band. Things like that.

MR: And you also made some very strategic and creative moves like adding artists such as Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmit to the Eagles’ roster.

IA: Well, yeah. The band took its natural turn towards rock ‘n’ roll. The obvious addition of Walsh was the big rock ‘n’ roll turn.

MR: These guys also have causes that they support. Don Henley immediately comes to mind, who is very socially conscious.

IA: They all are. Walsh supports the Santa Monica Conservancy in a big way, Glenn Frey has several–mostly kids in urban city-type stuff, he teaches at NYU–Henley focuses on his conservation stuff especially through the Walden Woods Project but he has other things like Caddo Lake. They deliver in all ways.

MR: Having been with these guys from the beginning, you’ve also seen their evolution as a live act. What are your thoughts on their show these days?

IA: To me, this is the best live show we’ve ever done. Again, we still can’t put everything in the show that we want to. The fact that they’re able to dip back and tell the entire story from beginning to end; it’s the story of the Eagles. They walk out on stage with just Glenn and Don and two guitars and play “Saturday Night” from the Desperado album. We’re able to go deeper into their repertoire. To me, this show they put together–from their performance to the production–is the most satisfying of all Eagles shows. People had better see it quickly because the three hour and fifteen minute set is coming to an end. I’m not saying they’re coming to an end, but this version of their live performance is. This show was written to go around once, not twice. That’s how it’ll be.

MR: Over the years, people have loved hearing new material from the Eagles. Do they do that still? Do they still get together and write?

IA: No, mostly because I told them don’t bother, because there’s no appreciation for it anymore. Neil Diamond once said to me that he puts four new songs all together in the set because he knows they’re going to get up and go to the bathroom when he plays new songs. I’ve actually discouraged them from doing anything new because there’s such a lack of respect these days for icons of our business doing any new material. Their audience wants to hear the body of work that they live with at home, not new material.

MR: It’s amazing how millions and millions of people love and know most of the material by the Eagles, with “Hotel California” seeming to be the most revered. Irving, what advice do you have for new artists?

IA: Be born thirty years earlier. The business as it exists now is not the opportunity that it was when we all started.

MR: With the Eagles having been as influential as they were, I believe they effected music way beyond the period when they had hit singles. And they were the door opener for so many other artists.

IA: They took their friends on, whether it was Jackson or J.D. or Linda or Dan. They took an interest in their friends’ careers and they took talented friends. They don’t get nearly enough credit for all the good that they do for society and for others.

MR: And you helped put all this in motion, Irving.

IA: Thank you very much.

A Conversation with Jersey Boys’ Bob Gaudio

Mike Ragogna: Okay, pretend someone is hearing the story for the very first time. Where does the story start with Bob Gaudio and Franki Valli & The Four Seasons?

Bob Gaudio: Wow. You’re testing my memory, that’s for sure. I might have to go see the Broadway show again to refresh it. [laughs] Actually, in truth, there are many things in that show that have brought my memory back. As you might expect there were lots of stories told and from four different viewpoints. Everybody had a different angle on what I was about and I have a different view of what Frankie’s about, et cetera. That’s an interesting place in itself. When I was fifteen, I started in a group called The Royal Teens. Fast forwarding, I found myself in the middle of nowhere as a one-hit wonder. I got a job in a printing factory, thought, “Oh, this is not good, I could lose my fingers so I should do something else.” I dabbled back in, ran into some people, actually Joe Pesci–some liberties taken in the Broadway show–but essentially, I hooked up with Joe and Mike Petrillo and Louis Eppolito and we started a little jazz quartet. We played around starving and Joey said, “You should meet this guy, he’s got an amazing voice, you’re a songwriter, and this could make some sense.” Long story short, we met up and Frankie said, “We’re looking for a keyboard player. I’ve been trying to get a keyboard player in the band since we’ve basically been guitars.” That audition thing and meeting Tommy [DeVito] and Nicky [Massi] and cutting to the quick, off we went.

MR: What do you think it was about Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons that really resonated to you?

BG: That’s somebody who creates the music business. Certainly, the key here is Frankie. Frankie’s voice is beyond anybody’s that I’ve ever heard, and probably most people would say that including most singers. He’s pretty unique. I had a musical palette there that I could pretty much do anything I wanted to as a writer. Having the range he has, having the musical knowledge to be able to handle something non-rock ‘n’ roll and stretch that and meld that together with other music… I came form a classical jazz background when I was a kid and I was able to dip into that. Frankie was able to sing it and the combination with Bob Crewe and his expertise and flamboyance was just a great combination at the time. Marriages made in heaven, so to speak. We got on great. I don’t care who you are, if I structure the harmonies exactly thge way The Four Seasons did them and Frankie wasn’t on top, we’d sound like The Beach Boys. I’m stretching this obviously, but you get the point. His voice on top is the group.

MR: I see the lineage of folks that followed, like Billy Joel, especially on “Uptown Girl.”

BG: That’s true, I met Billy and this is again a stretch but he surprised me because he looked like a deer in the headlights when I met him. It was like, “How could you still be alive?” [laughs] This is my impression of the meeting, okay? He obviously has been a big fan, with “Uptown Girl,” and oddly enough, I was a huge fan of his because when I got off the road, I went to work with Motown and had a publishing deal and I remember getting a demo of this guy that just blew me away. It wasn’t right for what I was up to but it was a demo of “New York State Of Mind.” I wish I could find it. I know it’s somewhere in storage, and if I could find it, I’d get him to sign it for me. He had an amazing talent. To be even in his wildest dreams somebody, as the group or as a songwriter on my own, he’d listen to is a great honor. He has such an amazing talent.

MR: You wrote “Sherry,” and that’s the song that really broke The Four Seasons, I think. There’s something that was really captured in the studio during the recording process. Was there anything you did that was a little different during the sessions?

BG: Well, the idea of the doubling voices. I’ve said this a few times when comparing us to The Beach Boys and people always seem to bring that card out. We weren’t brothers, we didn’t have any relation vocally. We just didn’t have the typical vocal group blend. We were four individual different voices that somehow got thrown in the room and what came of it had to do with the way songs were written. Of course, there was Frankie’s voice, not to play Nicky and Tommy down. They had a unique sound as well. The four of us together was something radio hadn’t heard before, and the combination with Bob Crewe and his expertise in the studio… We developed that sound. When we doubled vocals, we sounded like no other group. I don’t know, it’s slightly out of tune, maybe. Something resonates, some buzz… We always referred to that when we were rehearsing as, “This is not buzzing.” There’s just something about when chords come together and when doubling parts come together and one’s a little louder than the other, a little more energy on the first take than on the second. These combinations all had to do with our personal preference in finalizing the product. When “Sherry” was done, I think there wasn’t anybody in the studio that didn’t know it was done. It was ready for radio. Fortunately, we were right.

MR: As a prodcuer and songwriter, you’ve worked with many artists, including Nancy Sinatra, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Eric Carmen… And then you produced Neil Diamond projects and Little Shop Of Horrors. Do you envision yourself early on as a producer?

BG: Yeah, that’s when I left the group. Fortunately, Frankie had survived, but it could just as well not, because leaving the group was a blow to Frankie but it was something that I just had to do. I’m not a performer. I don’t know how I wound up in the group and travelled with them anyway. That was just not my thing, so when the opportunity came, I thought, “It’s time, It’s time to get behind the board and work with other people.” Frankie was fine with it eventually, and that’s what happened. I’ve always felt I’m behind the scenes. I’m quite comfortable there and I think that’s where I do my best.

MR: Behind the scenes, you were also responsible for one of the most memorable hits ever, Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond’s “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.” There’s a story behind that, how it started in one camp, moved to the other, and then a radio DJ blended both versions, right?

BG: That was the original mash-up, I think. I recorded that with Neil, we loved it and thought it was one of the better songs that he was doing. Nobody really seemed to pick up on it as as a single, maybe it was too easy listening, a little too ballady, but a DJ somewhere came up with this little combination and coincidentally it happeend to be in the same key, so that made it real easy. The phone started lighting up locally and I guess people started picking up on it, Neil got a call, “Hey, do you think we could get you guys on the same label, same song?” Barbara obviously recorded it differently and then it was a simple matter of–not so simple, by the way, the big job was getting it done, not that it wouldn’t work. We went in with about as many loaded guns as we could in case they decided, “Let’s do it live.” We opted for doing it face to face with a piano and singing from the heart, no strings, no anything, and that’s the way it was done. I pieced it together with, I don’t know, twenty-one takes vocally, and it was a reasonably easy job to do and then after the fact, the orchestration went on. Bingo.

MR: You were behind two of the most off the beaten path albums, one being the soundtrack album of TV special Watertown with Frank Sinatra.

BG: The TV special that never happened. Watertown. And I might add I’m proud to say it was the least-selling album Sinatra ever did. I hold the award for that one.

MR: What was the deal behind that? Why didn’t they ever air it?

BG: I’ve read some very astute reviews in The Paris Review about that album and the fact that it was a time when men just didn’t take care of the children. It wasn’t the kind of situation that’s happening more now with women working. I don’t want to sound like I’m into anything in particular. I’m just giving you things I read critiquing the album, that’s it’s way ahead of its time, et cetera, et cetera. But back to what you asked originally, Frank felt he wasn’t in good voice on the album and that was that. It went out without any fanfare. It was totally off-the-wall, if you will, for any Sinatra album. It is what it is. It’s a guy taking care of the kids because his wife leaves him and he sounds like that. It’s from the heart and there’s no polish, it’s the real deal. I don’t know that people wanted to hear Frank that way.

MR: Well it’s interesting because he did do the movie High Hopes which has a hint of that, the guy taking care of his son.

BG: Well if you’re doing a special you’re not totally live, but doing a special is a big burden. You’d better be singing like you’re playing Caesar’s Palace, you’d better be up to par. There isn’t somebody clipping film together. He felt the way he felt and, of course, you don’t say, “Oh, gee, would you reconsider?” So that’s what happened.

MR: Speaking of that and being socially conscious, you did The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette album with The Four Seasons. You got together with Jake Holmes to take a swing at the culture.

BG: Yeah, when I met Jake he was performing at The Bitter End, I used to hang there a lot when I was younger, I’d go see him all the time and he’s just knock my socks off lyrically. We started to talk and hang out a bit and the next thing I know we were writing an album. We wrote the Sinatra album, also, so we worked on two projects that I’m very proud of them. Neither one of them were hugely successful but Jake went on and had a great career, had a hit record and did tons and tons of commercials. We had a good time doing that, we just locked ourselves away for weeks when I lived in Montclair, he’d come out and stay with us and this is what came out of it. We were both in that same place at the same time.

MR: His song, the title track of the album should have been a top ten hit. I don’t understand what happened.

BG: As I remember it was a pretty good sized hit. I don’t remember if it went top ten, but he was a major talent. He’s written some great lyrics. “Genuine Imitation Life,” that whole song just killed me. That’s the only song on the album I think that we didn’t cowrite. It was just so good that I had to have it, so we did it.

MR: You wrote “Who Loves You” and “December 1963” that became the new sound of Frankie Valli. How did you do it?

BG: Those were my Motown days. When I left the group, I went with Berry [Gordy] and he got me there. Speaking of The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette album, when I first met him, he said, “I’ve got to tell you, there’s a song that you did that was never a hit called ‘Saturday’s Father.’ Once a month when I have my morning meetings with my creative, that’s one of my all-time favorite Four Seasons songs and it was never a hit but there is something about it.” Obviously, I love hearing that, so I went with Motown and during the time with Motown it just didn’t work. They weren’t hearing what we were doing or I was doing and Frankie Valli was there. Bob Crewe eventually came in for a bit and it didn’t work, so I asked to get out and Berry graciously said, “Okay,” and we worked out a nice deal for everyone. Mike Curb, who was a big fan, I can’t remember how or why or what, came into the picture. “Who Loves You” was in the wings at the time and we went with Curb Records recorded the Who Loves You album with “Oh What A Night.” It was just one of those moments where things worked perfectly, the timing was great and Mike was all over it once we left Motown.

MR: How did you get Jersey Boys from the La Jolla to Broadway?

BG: How much time do you have? That’s a Des McAnuff story.

MR: Do it!

BG: I wrote a show with Jerry Leitchling and Arlene Sarner, a new musical called Peggy Sue Got Married, which is based on the movie. It eventually opened in London. During the process of looking for a director, I ran into Des McAnuff and had lunch with him. He would do four or five films after that. He said, “I’m going into film land, but I’ll tell you. If you ever decdie to do a show or anything with your music…the first record I ever bought was called Sherry & Eleven Others,” which was our first album. He said, “That got me into the music business and theater.” That stayed in my brain. The years go by and so on and so forth and what started the idea of doing Jersey Boys–although that wasn’t the name at the time. The Deer Hunter had this famous pool hall scene where they’re singing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” after five or six beers, totally out of tune, but it was a great moment. When I saw that there was such an impact on my creative juices and the fact that, “Hey, our music has been on radio, but it’s never really had a visual attached to it,” that was the beginning for me. But that’s a long while before. Cutting to the quick, one thing or another came about and eventually, I ran into Rick Ellis and we talked in LA to Frankie and I and we went back and forth on the idea of doing something like this and then Marshall Brickman got on board and that started to develop. Coincidentally, the Dodgers’ Michael David got interested as a producer. Michael David and Des McAnuff had been partners in the Dodger Theatricals group, so you can see how this all develops. Now the next step is Des McAnuff, artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse, so when things got rolling we went there for four weeks to see how good the possibilities were and wound up running for four months and then it was off to Broadway.

MR: Did you think it was going to be that successful? With that team you probably had an idea.

BG: Well, you never know with anything where it’s going. You choose the best company you can and you just hope. It’s almost like a blind date. You can hear a lot about the person but you never really know until you walk out and you say, “Yeah, I want to come back.” It’s that kind of a thing I think. The ingredients came together in La Jolla. They did a magnificient job, the spark was there, the writing and the production and the sets and the sound, the whole nine yards, it just came together beautifully. Did we know? Well if you sat in the audience on opening night in La Jolla I think you’d have a clue, because it was Beach Boy territory and the place came apart. So your assumption would have to be, “What happens if we get to Broadway, New York, our world, our territory, what happens then?” I was a betting man, because we did take it further. Like I told someone who invested in the show, “You’d better be careful, because if you put money into this after seeing it in La Jolla, this might be considered insider trading.” It was so obvious, the electricity was so overwhelming, it was hard to believe it wouldn’t work on Broadway. Of course, you never know. We crossed our fingers every night, but it worked.

MR: Many hit Broadway musicals naturally evolve into films, so seeing Jersey Boys become a film wasn’t a reach, right? In fact, I’d bet the second it hit Broadway, you knew this was going to be a film.

BG: We had lots and lots of early action when the Broadway show first hit. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese and Graham King who stayed attached as producer… It’s gone through a major evolution and, by the way, so did Jersey Boys, initially. I made it sound really simple but the whole thing took place over seven or eight years. It was not an overnight, “Wow.” It was really a long process, as was the case with the film. Even though we were Tony winners, it was a long process. Creative opinions went back and forth. Frankie and I have been partners for fifty years but there are many times we’re on different pages. The process took a long time and where it finally wound up was with Clint Eastwood who we both considered debateably one of the top ten directors of all time. I said before with Jersey Boys when we went to La Jolla, you put yourself in the hands of people at the time who you think can do the best job and who you’re most comfortable with and are great talents. But it takes a while to get there. The film took a pretty large circle to wind up where it wound up. Nothing is that simple. It seems to be but it takes a lot of thought and a lot of work and a lot of luck.

MR: Do you have anything else up your sleeve?

BG: Right now, my shirt is sleeveless. [laughs] I’m just kind of sitting in Nashville and hoping the humidity goes down. The last project I did was still connected to what I’m doing. There’s a movement to get Peggy Sue Got Married to Broadway, but the soundtrack for the movie was the last big project and I’ve been sitting here in Nashville doing everything out of that little Box I told you about earlier.

MR: Bob, you’ve lived in Nashville over twenty years, right? You think it might work out for you someday?

BG: [laughs] I will admit we’re not here a hundred percent of the time, we’re in New York and we’ve been in L.A. and various other places, Australia and London, but Nashville’s a great town. It’s a humbling bunch of people here creatively. I mean really, you just walk out the door and go to any club and it’s, “Oh my God, they don’t have a deal?” It’s a great place to be.

MR: The whole concept of the old school “deal” is gone now.

BG: Yeah, it is a new world, but I’ve answered that question a few times, “What’s different in the music business?” and there’s not a whole lot difference from when we started. It’s still the same struggle, it’s still the same, “Hey, how can I make a living doing what I love?” That hasn’t changed, it’s just different now. But it’s still what it is, it’s all about the music. I can’t remember who said this, but the people who don’t make it in the music business that are truly talented are the ones that quit. That may be true.

MR: You’re getting into this territory, so I need to ask you right away: What advice do you have for new artists?

BG: I did a seminar a while ago with Eddy Arnold and Mike Curb and I told a little story that I won’t go into in too much detail. But I’ll start off with the advice as most people have heard many times–follow your dreams. An example of that is when I was doing The Jazz Singer with Neil Diamond, I did the movie and I did the album. I was on MGM doing the final mixing of the film and I walked out into the lobby and I run into someone who I hadn’t seen in twenty-five years. We started talking and he said, “What are you doing?” I said, “Working with Neil Diamond,” “Oh yeah, right,” “What are you up to?” and he said, “I’m out here doing some little film but with some really talented people, great director, couple of great actors and I’m hoping… It’s been my first major role, but I’ve been trying to do this and I’m forty-two. I’m ready to get out of the business.” Guess what it was? It was Raging Bull and that was Joe Pesci. I hadn’t seen him in twenty years. There’s an example. At forty-two, forty-three years old, he stayed with it and bingo, it finally happened. That’s the advice. How long can you stand it? If you can stand it, stay with it.

MR: What was it like between the Dion DiMucci and the Frankie Valli camps back then?

BG: Dion I went to high school with for about six months, he went to Bergenfield High School, so I knew him–not well. I know him really well now. We talk reasonably often. I think Dion was actually pre-Four Seasons. I remember Dion & The Timberlanes, that’s how far back we go, and then it was The Belmonts. I loved his music. There was something chilling about the way he approached it. I loved the harmonies. I’d have to say they were something of an inspiration to me when I started. I don’t know about Frankie but from my point of view, maybe because we came from the same areas–I was born in the Bronx–it wasn’t a rivalry to my knowledge. But he and Frankie are really good friends now, they talk all the time.

MR: And you have all those album box sets that you participated in.

BG: Most of that stuff has been remastered and all, so I’m seeing it here with press releases and I know they’re doing what they call “Jersey Boys Summer” or “Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons” something or other. It’s the Summer Of The Four Seasons, as I see it. It’s thrilling to see all this product that’s being reissued because the truth is, obviously, if it wasn’t for the movie and the Broadway show, it wouldn’t be out there as vividly as it is. It’s a great thing, and it’s nice to know–no matter who you are, creative people like to know that people are hearing what they do, and I fall in that category as well as anyone else. I’m not one of those guys who says, “I don’t care if anybody doesn’t like the music, I’m just gonna do it.” Sure, I don’t know anything else I would do, but I still like to be recognized and this is a wonderful thing.

MR: And you sure are being recognized for it. So you’ve had the film, the musical, the swag… What’s next? A planet named Jersey Boys?

BG: [laughs] There is something that we’re talking about, and I wish I could say something about it, but I can’t.

MR: It’s a nation, isn’t it. You’re starting a new nation.

BG: [laughs] I can’t say it isn’t something somebody couldn’t figure out, it is something that would maybe take this to another level, although if we stopped with the movie and the Broadway show, we should all be quite happy with each other, and I am. I’m very proud of what’s happened and thrilled that people have come and said, “Hey, we’re going to make this more than you guys even dreamed.” I remember a good friend of mine who went to see the La Jolla production before I saw it. He called me during intermission and said, “My God, this might be bigger than you guys ever were.” I said, “Well that’s quite all right with me.”

MR: Bob, have fun collecting your Oscar.

BG: Well, from your lips. But whatever it is, we’re happy, we had a great producer and a great director…down the line, great directors on both projects. We just can’t ask for too much more except for that thing I can’t mention.

Virginia AG Mark Herring To Fight Same-Sex Marriage Ban, Reports Suggest

Virginia’s new attorney general Mark Herring is making a major reversal on his state’s same-sex marriage stance, according to The Washington Post and NPR.

Herring will announce on Thursday that he finds Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional, The Washington Post reported.

The move would be going against the position of Herring’s predecessor Ken Cuccinelli (R), who once stated, “I cannot support something that I believe brings nothing but self-destruction, not only physically but of their soul.”

As the Post points out, Herring, a Democrat, will also be reversing his own stance from eight years ago, when he voted against same-sex marriage.

“As attorney general, I cannot and will not defend laws that violate Virginians’ rights,” Herring told “Morning Edition.”

After a review of a case challenging the state’s same-sex marriage ban, Herring concluded, “The commonwealth will be siding with the plaintiffs in this case and with every other Virginia couple whose right to marry is being denied.”

Luciana Souza: A Bossa Nova Baby Makes Her Mark in the Jazz Realm

In 2013, Luciana Souza gained a place among the world’s top contemporary jazz singers by earning not one but two Grammy nominations, for The Book of Chet (for Best Jazz Vocal Album) and Duos III (Best Latin Jazz Album). The 47-year-old Brazilian vocalist now has a total of six Grammy nominations, a distinction that has gone largely unrecognized in her native country. She has also appeared on Herbie Hancock’s Grammy-winning River: The Joni Letters and works by Bobby McFerrin, John Patitucci, Till Brönner and Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov, to name a few, and performed with several symphony orchestras. Souza sings with a quiet intensity and — in The Book of Chet and Duos III — favors spare, stripped-down arrangements. Her voice is clear and perfectly in tune, with a beautiful tone, and her phrasing is often daring, even startling. She’s a vocalist who once said “each phrase for me has a certain gestalt” and she invites you to savor both the notes and the spaces between them. Souza is spectacular in a João Gilberto kind of way — you have to listen attentively to fully appreciate all the nuances.

Souza’s artistic influences include Gilberto (who invented bossa nova’s guitar beat and introduced a low-key vocal style) and singers like Chet Baker, Carmen McRae and Joni Mitchell. She’s a child of bossa nova and jazz in more ways than one. Souza was born in São Paulo to songwriter parents (Walter and Tereza Souza) who were part of the bossa nova scene in their city and later founded Som da Gente, a small independent record label dedicated to Brazilian jazz and instrumental music, which included the great composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal on its roster. At home she was surrounded by the music of her parents and their musician friends. “Music was everything, music was the bread maker, music was the dream, music was hopeful; it was humor, it was the language that was spoken at the house. My father being a guitar player, he never left his guitar; he was constantly playing. It was happy, it was fun,” Souza recalls.

Walter wrote commercial jingles to pay the rent, and he started using little Luciana in the recordings when she was just three years old. She says:

I think they detected early on that I could sing in tune and I was musical and I had a facility for learning melodies and learning language. So they encouraged me and the recording studio was like the living room to me. It was an extension of everything we did. We sang at home, we sang in the studio. They would teach me a melody, and I just loved it.

At age 18, Souza moved to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music. There, she developed her talents as a singer as well as her abilities as an educator — she eventually joined Berklee’s faculty and after that taught at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Since 1992, she has released 11 albums, and won her first four Grammy nominations with Brazilian Duos (2003), North and South (2004), Duos II (2006) and Tide (2010). She has interpreted Brazilian standards, recast songs by great American songwriters as bossa nova (The New Bossa Nova) and boldly devoted entire albums to musical interpretations of poets (The Poems of Elizabeth Bishop and Other Songs and Neruda). Along with way she married bassist-producer Larry Klein, with whom she has a young son; they moved to Los Angeles in 2006. He produced both The Book of Chet and Duos III. Souza has now been living in the U.S. for nearly thirty years, and is glad about her choice. “I came here — to Berklee, to Boston, to New York, and L.A. — because this is the music I want to make. I want to be in the environment, I want to be with the musicians, I want to speak this language; I need to be here.” She adds, “As much as I miss Brazil, I find that here I can really be myself.”

Her two recent Grammy-nominated albums reflect Souza’s musical vision and her versatility. The Book of Chet is an homage to jazz trumpeter-vocalist Chet Baker (1929-1988), who was a major influence on many bossa nova musicians, and includes songs recorded by him such as “The Thrill is Gone,” “Oh You Crazy Moon,” “The Very Thought Of You,” “You Go To My Head” and “Forgetful.” The song choices were an attempt to capture the breadth of his career, rather than to compile his biggest successes.

“I was obsessed with him when I was in graduate school at the New England Conservatory,” Souza comments about Baker. She says:

And then twenty years later I came across one of [his] biographies and then his autobiography and Let’s Get Lost [the 1988 documentary about Baker]. And it came back to me — why did I love him so much? And I got all the records out. His voice moves me so deeply…the way he sings…It’s so pure, so direct, so unadorned. To me, there’s an incredible, quiet, calm sadness. He’s like a kindred spirit, musically and vocally.

On The Book of Chet, “The Thrill Is Gone” (not to be confused with the B.B. King song of the same name) is particularly haunting, with Souza’s rather somber vocals over hypnotic repeating figures on bass and guitar, while “The Very Thought of You,” with Souza’s luscious rendering, is another of the album’s many high points.

The Book of Chet and Duos III were released the same day and both were direct live recordings with few instruments. However, while the former album is consistently understated and introspective, with slow tempos that push the envelope, Duos III ranges across a variety of genres, including bossa nova, baião, some lively sambas (like “Tim Tim Por Tim Tim” and “Doralice,” both with impressive scatting) and the wordless singing of “Dona Lu,” written for Souza by Pereira.

On Duos III, the third in a series, Souza performs duets with three renowned Brazilian guitarists — Romero Lubambo, Marco Pereira and Toninho Horta — as she interprets Brazilian compositions, most of them standards, from composers like Antonio Carlos Jobim (four selections), Haroldo Barbosa, Dorival Caymmi, Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, Djavan, Dominguinhos and Cartola, as well as Pereira and Horta.

Souza likes the combination of voice and guitar “because it’s how I grew up and because of my dad doing that.” She adds:

The guitar doesn’t sustain and the sound decays and dies; it allows for silence. The guitar can be very percussive, very melodic, and very harmonic, obviously. All these different possibilities in terms of orchestration can happen with just one instrument. So it is my favorite instrument but also it comes from the Brazilian tradition. A lot of these songs were written on guitar, we can do them in the original keys, and it just colors the music in a certain way, gives it the right color, the right timbre.

She adds, “and the people that I play with are very able and agile and most of them really have this sensibility in terms of improvisation.” Each of the three guitarists has a quite different approach, technically and artistically. “You take the same exact guitar and give it to Romero or Marco or Toninho, for example, and they sound completely different. Marco is almost an intellectual with the guitar; he’s a romantic, so he brings that kind of heavy heart, but is full of technique and thought” while “Romero is all fire, all rhythm, completely improvisatory.”

Regarding Toninho Horta, she comments that in “the lineage of Brazilian music, Toninho gets a chapter as a songwriter, as a lyricist, as a guitarist. He’s innovative in every way. His sense of harmony is unlike that of any other Brazilian — the most refined, advanced and modern thing in Brazilian music that I know of.” She teams with Horta, known to many Americans for his work with both Milton Nascimento and Pat Metheny, on four songs, including his own “Pedro da Lua” and “Beijo Partido.”

Duos III and The Book of Chet were recorded after a nearly three-year break while Souza focused on being a new mother. “At this point in my life it was very important to put out those two records because I hadn’t made a record [in a while] and it just made sense to come out very quiet and very strong.” About her six total Grammy nominations, Souza says, “It feels good. It talks about all the possibilities for small artists. Only one [album] was done for a major record label [Verve], and five others for independents. It’s sort of an homage to my parents, because they were an independent record company.”

The Luciana Souza Quintet — with guitarist Lionel Loueke, harmonica player Gregoire Maret, bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Kendrick Scott — will perform Jan. 17 at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, LA, Jan. 18 at the Carver Center in San Antonio, and Jan. 23 at Duke University in Durham, NC.

Mark Nepo And Oprah Discuss How We Can Live A More Poetic Life (VIDEO)

While most people would describe Mark Nepo, spiritual author of Seven Thousand Ways to Listen, Reduced to Joy and The Book of Awakening as a poet, he says he hopes to be more. When Oprah sat down with Nepo on “Super Soul Sunday,” he explained how the labels we use for ourselves can hold us back from feeling truly alive.

“I remember you having said or written that for many years you wanted to be a great poet and now your heart’s desire is to be the poem,” Oprah says. “What does that mean?”

“I think it’s not just for a poet, but it works that way for me,” Nepo says. “I think it’s for all of us. I think, understandably, we start out learning who we are, we start to become familiar with our gifts, and then we want to be accomplished…. And then we want to make a contribution, and we have such a production imprint in our culture that we want to produce something.”

Nepo says his battle with cancer shifted his perspective.

“But, for me, as we’ve talked, as life had other ideas, I found that it wasn’t helpful to try to create great poems. I needed to find true poems to help me live,” he says. “And then as I was able to still be here, it was all about being the moment of life come alive. That’s the poem, to stay as close to our aliveness as possible.”

“And that is how each of us can live a more poetic life,” Oprah says.

“Absolutely,” Nepo agrees. He goes on to explain that in our culture, when someone has a talent for something, we’re told to label ourselves. “If I write, someone says you should be a writer. If someone loves the land, oh, you should be a gardener. Or if someone sings, you should be a singer. However, we’re being turned into a noun when the aliveness is in staying a verb.”

So if you love singing — just sing, Nepo says.

“Just sing,” Oprah repeats. “You don’t have to become a singer. Oh, that’s good.”

“You don’t have to become a gardener. Just keep your hands in the earth,” Nepo adds.

“Because there isn’t necessarily just one thing you have to do,” Oprah says.

“No,” Nepo says. “And then we follow the aliveness, and so our identity evolves over time.”

First Nighter: Mark Rylance and Company’s Superb “Richards III” and “Twelfth Night”

Two-time Tony winner Mark Rylance (Boeing Boeing, Jerusalem) is stage-obsessed. He’s so taken with all aspects of the theater–as well as with London’s new(-ish) Globe where he was artistic director for a decade-plus years–that he has the Shakespeare’s Globe Productions company he’s leading get into costume in front of the Belasco audience. They do so–dressers and all–on a set that Jenny Tiramani bases on the original and replicated Globe lay-out, with two-tiered boxes stage right and left.
By this choice, spectators–often treated as 16th-century groundlings to be spoken to directly by the actors–get to watch, for instance, Rylance work himself into the padded doublet and tights he wears as the title character in Richard III and as the mourning Olivia in glittering floor-length black frock whom he impersonates in Twelfth Night, or What You Will.
He’s playing these two vastly different figures in William Shakespeare’s works in yet another strong bid for a Tony. Not, mind you, that for him acting is a matter of accumulating awards. It’s not. He’s clearly out to take command of the theater realm, to make every word count. I’ve seen what he does with scripts when he’s toiling over them. He jots so many notes to himself that when he’s through inventing whomever he’s appearing as, there’s almost no white space left on the page.
His imagination is so unbounded that anyone who relishes superlative acting can’t take his or her eyes off him for fear of missing what unexpected subtle or broad gesture or inflection will occur next. Watching the surprisingly short and off-the-stage unassuming Rylance is a matter of studying someone who regards acting simultaneously as profoundly serious and unrestrainedly amusing.
Take his Richard III. It’s not news that the ill-formed nobleman can be funny as he stops at nothing while maneuvering himself to be crowned king–and, when, on the throne, still isn’t satisfied. But Rylance compounds the fun by turning into a Richard of York who unabashedly giggles at his own jokes while he strides about with a decided limp and never using his withered and gloved left hand. Plotting to eliminate all competitors, this Richard frequently emits room-shaking guffaws at what he’s getting up to. At one point, he literally crooks (pun intended) a finger at the audience to join him in his merry malevolence.
Or take Rylance’s Olivia in what the program and related advertisements announce as Twelfe Night. Here’s a woman grieving over her brother’s death, a woman of surpassing refinement who’s found nothing to comfort her until an emissary from a suitor for her hand arrives and melts her frozen heart. Even then, she retains her equanimity, gliding about the stage as if transported on wheels. Her speech has lute-like qualities. In the role, Rylance is depression embodied. He’s as different from Richard as could be envisioned.
Though Rylance is top-billed–it’s unlikely the troupe he’s brought with him would be here without him–this is no instance of a 19th-century-like actor-manager touring with a company populated by pick-up performers. This is as accomplished an ensemble as has been seen locally in a long while and thus worth giving thanks for.
With Tim Carroll directing both the tragedy and the comedy and never running out of inspired ideas for either (his best notions alone would fill a notice), the challenge for any reviewer is deciding where to begin elaborate on everything bright and brilliant at hand.
It’s certainly exceedingly difficult when there isn’t a weak among the actors–all men. (An interesting coincidence that the all-women Julius Caesar has only just concluded its St. Ann’s Warehouse run.) Citing the standout elements is a tough task when Tiramani’s costumes are seemingly authentic from undergarments out. It’s a problem designating the most signficant contributor when the lighting–only partially supplied by six chandeliers boasting a dozen or more candles occasionally dropping wax–is so subtly intricate.
It’s no easy task to declare foremost elements when the music, under Claire van Kampen’s supervision and provided by musicians using traditional instruments, underscores so much of the proceedings lambently as played on this Globe’s balcony. In the instance of the music-besotted Twelfth Night, music is played and sung as part of the action. Always remember, too, that this play contains some of Shakespeare’s most haunting lyrics.
And, oh, the acting! Perhaps begin with Stephen Fry, who, aside from Rylance, is probably the best-known name this side of the Atlantic. He’s Twelfth Night‘s maligned Malvolio. Having spent much of career in movies and as a television compere (when not writing superb novels and essays), Fry isn’t a recognized stage personality, but he goes a long way towards rectifying that with this booming appearance. When Malvolio, whose self image is all-important to him, loses it in cross-gartered yellow leggings and rigged smiles, Fry knows precisely what to do to elicit chuckles and sympathy.
Samuel Barnett, first spotted in Manhattan with The History Boys, acquits himself beautifully as Viola in Twelfth Night and as Queen Elizabeth in Richard III. Joseph Timms does the same as Anne in Richard III and Sebastian in Twelfth Night.
Angus Wright as the wronged Buckingham and the wonky Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Paul Chahidi as Maria (check out his cleavage) and both Hastings and Tyrrell, Colin Hurley as the boozing Sir Toby Belch and the dying Edward IV–they’re all brimming with ebullience, with impeccable craft. Equally praise-worthy are Liam Brennan, Matt Harrington, Kurt Egyiawan, Terry McGinity, Peter Hamilton Dyer, John Paul Connolly, Jethro Skinner, Bryan Paterson and young Matthew Schechter and Hayden Signoretti.
When running the Globe, Rylance always featured a jig at the curtain call. He continues to delight in the custom. There’s method to the theatrical madness, which is reminding the audience as it prepares to leave that no matter high or low the evening’s spirits have soared or sunk, there’s still something to be said for merriment. With this evening’s list of triumphs, it’s not only the actors who want to join in the jig. The audience is in the let’s-all-jig mood as well.
