Matthew Miller Men’s Spring 2019

When K-Swiss, the California-based footwear brand, approached Matthew Miller wanting to work on a collaboration, he had one condition: The resulting ready-to-wear had to be made using the technology he’d recently discovered that could turn garments destined for the landfill into new fabric.
“I discovered this (recycling) tech, but as a small designer, I wasn’t big enough to utilize it because it’s hydro-powered and we had to do a certain amount of (volume) to make it environmentally viable,” said Miller. Around the same time, he came upon a cache of about 10,000 band T-shirts that were destined for the landfill.
They were later funneled into the K-Swiss collaboration, a streetwear collection of mostly tracksuits and Ts that appeared on the catwalk along with the designer’s signature line.
For the main collection, Miller mined his background as a frequent flier at some of Britain’s most renowned late-Nineties clubs. “I wanted it to feel like an underground movement, almost like what a club scene would have been like 20 years ago, where you get all these different characters. But they’re all into one thing — the music or the scene,” he said.
Those ideas translated into a confident collection that felt more upbeat than previous seasons, with pops of neon or

Justin Trudeau Challenges Matthew Perry To A Rematch Of Elementary School Fight

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau playfully challenged actor Matthew Perry to a fight over Twitter on Saturday, just weeks after Perry let the world know that he once beat Trudeau up at their elementary school in Canada.

During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last month, Perry told the story, as extremely unlikely as it might seem.

“My friend Chris Murray, who was also in the fifth grade in Canada, reminded me that we actually beat up Justin Trudeau,” he said. “We both beat him up. I think he was excelling in a sport that we weren’t so it was pure jealousy.”

“I think he was the only kid in school that we could beat up,” he added. “You know, I’m not bragging about this, this is terrible. I was a stupid kid, I didn’t want to beat him up. In fact, I think at one point I tried to turn it into love play.”

Even though Perry expressed remorse, that wasn’t good enough for Trudeau, who in his challenge on Saturday ― which was April Fools’ Day ― correctly noted that Chandler, Perry’s character on “Friends,” has a very punchable face.

Guys, just one request: If this goes down, just make sure it’s streamable ― not some of that pay-per-view bull crap.

Matthew Adams Dolan Men’s Fall 2017

Matthew Adams Dolan, the Parsons School of Design grad who was born in Massachusetts but raised in Sydney, had one of the last shows on the New York Fashion Week: Men’s schedule and showed models lazily lounging on a bed being filmed from above while wearing his oversize designs, which have been worn consistently by Rihanna.
Dolan, who has produced his collection for a few seasons, but is new to the official schedule, said he wanted to bring denim, a fabric that’s known for being heavy-duty and durable, into a bedroom setting. Models were swathed in quilted denim capes, oxford shirts with elongated sleeves, flared denim with snaps on the side and long corduroy jackets with Seventies-inspired collars. The designer also worked with nylon and created a rain jacket with a stuffed waist tie and a pink shirt and pant set that draped the model’s body.
From the look of this collection, his profile will continue to rise and Rihanna won’t be the only fan.

Matthew Curtis was my friend. We shared good times, bad times, and other times in between. Fun was what we searched for and usually what we found. Trouble seemed to find us with little effort from us at all. Football games were played, cemteries explored, girls were sought and cops eluded. Life happened and it was good, but all of this would come to an end. Life can twist and turn as we follow it’s days in pursuit of our joy. It detours from decent intentions, meandering through time with a will of its own. Beckoned by illusion or deceived by perversions, we sometimes follow pursuits that are not for the better good. Many years have passed since the days of our youth and I miss my friend greatly, but someday I know, God willing, I will see him once again.

Matthew Camp Discusses His Go-Go Past, His Fashion-Design Future and the Power of Smell (NSFW PHOTOS)

Portrait by Daniel Jack Lyons

It’s easy to prejudge Matthew Camp. He’s a beautiful former go-go dancer with an amazing body and a cherubic face. (Read: I kind of assumed he was going to be the kind of guy who skates by on his looks.) When he walked in the door for his interview, I complimented his overcoat. He blushed, shrugged, and said he made it himself. This interaction pretty much set the tone for my afternoon with Camp. Through our conversation I learned that he’s not at all what I’d assumed. He’s kind, independent, hardworking, and gifted, a smart, fascinating guy who lives and works by his own rules. Here’s a snippet of our conversation. Enjoy!

Phillip M. Miner: Most people know you from your dancing career and are probably surprised to find out about the clothing and fragrance design. How did you get into fashion?

Matthew Camp: I’ve been making clothes for such a long time. I started before I was 20. I would make clothes for my sister’s dolls when I was a kid. I took a few classes in a community college and thought, “Wow, this is really easy.” I took a pattern-making class and a sewing class, and that was all I needed. The really interesting thing about making clothing is you learn a process that you can apply to anything. I feel like I can make anything now because I’ve learned the process of making something from scratch.

Miner: Like cologne, for example?

Camp: Exactly! I take natural and synthetic oils and mix them together using different processes to cure them to create the particular scent I want. Not a lot of people do it; it’s kind of a lost art. When I create a scent, I don’t follow many of the rules that people use. There are lots of books about what you’re supposed to do and the scents you’re supposed to use; I don’t really follow that. For me, smell is connected to memory and emotion. If I smell something and it conjures some sort of memory for emotion, I’ll find another scent that brings up the same memory. After I play around with it, I end up with a fragrance that tells a story. My newest fragrance, “8.5,” is made of smells that reminds me of go-go dancing. I used to wear cocoa butter all the time to grease myself up, so that’s in there. Leather and cigarettes and a bunch of other things that reminded me of those nights also went into “8.5.” To me, it smells like going and being out at a big gay bar. I think that’s why it resonates with gay men.

Miner: I have to ask: Does “8.5” mean what we assume it means?

Camp: It is not referring to my genitalia. I’m a happy 7.5. [Laughs.] Clearly the name is meant to be suggestive, but I chose “8.5” because it suggested a few things. The Fellini film is one of my favorite films; it’s raw and sexual, and it reminds of the scent.

Portrait by Daniel Jack Lyons

Miner: Tell me a bit about your dancing.

Camp: I danced forever. I started at the club 20 VIP, which is a strip club with lap dances and everything. I learned so much at that job. I learned how to socially manipulate people into giving me money, which was very useful when I started go-go dancing — and the rest of my career too, I guess. [Laughs.] When I go-go danced, I actually danced. I miss performing. I don’t necessarily miss being in my underwear all the time, but I miss being on a stage. It’s not necessarily the attention I miss; it’s the performing. When I was dancing at Boy Box at G Lounge, I would do these striptease numbers. One night I had a diaper on that was filled with chocolate pudding. I danced around like a baby, took the diaper off, then had a friend lick the pudding out of my ass. They asked me not to do that performance again. I said, “Why not?! This shit is amazing!” [Laughs.] People had the best reactions. Stuff like that was really fun to do.

Portrait by Daniel Jack Lyons

Miner: I can see why you did so well at go-go dancing. Your body is ridiculous. There are a bunch of nasty things said and written about gay guys who go to the gym frequently. Do you have any comment?

Camp: I can’t speak for an entire group of people, but [going to the gym] keeps me sane. I like to work out because it makes me feel good. My body actually hurts if I go more than four days without working out. I need to go and work out. I’m addicted to the chemicals my body produces when I work out. So I guess I don’t fucking care what people think. [Laughs.] But seriously, it keeps me sane. I’m probably a little agoraphobic; I won’t leave my house for much, usually just work or the gym or grocery shopping. So for me, going to the gym gives me the opportunity to leave my house and do something that feels good. It gives me the opportunity to be social without drinking or stuff like that. I’m trying to streamline as much as I can so it works for me.

Miner: Do you bring the same streamlining philosophy to your work?

Camp: Definitely. I’ve had a few people tell me I should start mass-producing my stuff. I’m not against that, but right now that’s not how I measure success. [Mass production] would unnecessarily complicate my work, because I’d end up trying to fulfill too many people’s desires. The way I work now, I have full control. My designs are mine. I look at my leather pieces as one-of-a-kind pieces of art that I make for one person. My typical client is a collector and the type of person who wears a leather jacket all the time; it’s part of their lifestyle. We collaborate, and the end product is totally unique.

Miner: My job is to make sure we talk about gay stuff at some point. Do you think your need to control your leather pieces comes from being gay?

Camp: I don’t know. When I was reading Stitching a Revolution, I realized gay people used to be total outlaws. They were outsiders and forced to create their own community that included really-fucking-cool cultural phenomena like drag queens. You don’t see that as much now. A lot of gay culture is becoming homogenized and acceptable, which isn’t a good or a bad thing. (I don’t believe in the ideas of “good” or “bad.”) I see both sides. We’re losing that outlaw thing, but it does make it easier for people to come out and also maybe makes [winning] equality easier. I guess I’m trying to say: Fuck it! Just be yourself. Who cares if you’re gay or straight? You don’t need someone else’s approval to do what you want. Do what makes you happy and healthy. It’s about self-improvement.

‘Dallas Buyers Club’ Makeup Artist On Matthew McConaughey’s Tan And Jared Leto’s Pink Lipstick

Five minutes into watching the Oscar-nominated film “Dallas Buyers Club,” I wanted to bury my tear-stained face in a bag of salty movie theater popcorn.

The movie’s depiction of the AIDS crisis has sparked some emotionally charged reactions from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as well. But as a beauty editor, I was also caught up in the dramatic physical transformations of actors Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. Months later, I am still awestruck by makeup artist Robin Mathew’s ability to create such convincing rashes and lesions on a $ 250 [supplies] budget.

So, how exactly did she do it? Mathews recently dished about her “Dallas Buyers Club” beauty secrets.

Spoiler alert: Read on to find out how this professional snagged an Oscar nod thanks to her ingenious use of grits, MAC lipstick and a lot of tanning products.

dallas buyers club

What was it like working with the most tanned man in America, Matthew McConaughey, and Jared Leto, an actor who is no stranger to makeup?

Both Matthew and Jared were amazingly supportive of this makeup process, and they were 100 percent involved. They realized how important it was that they look like, you know, like they had these different stages of full-blown AIDS. And it was difficult because the only time the camera wasn’t rolling was basically during our lunch breaks and makeup changes.

The director, Jean-Marc Vallée, shoots without any camera or lighting setup. So we didn’t have a grip or lighting department. The camera was always ready to roll in 5 minutes. We just shot, shot, shot and never stopped. For them to actually say, hold on a second. We gotta take 45 minutes, or whatever it was to do this important makeup change, really was a great deal of help and support. And I’m so grateful for that, and it make a big difference in the film, I think.

What type of research did you conduct to really nail down the aesthetics?

We were lucky through the production to hook up with Dr. David Hardy, an infectious diseases specialist. He really talked me through what the physical stages of AIDS looked like.

There’s three common physical traits we see with people with full-blown AIDS — they get extremely skeletal in the face; they get a rash called seborrheic dermatitis, which is kind of a rosacea-colored, patchy, flaky dry rash; and then, of course, lesions. So it was so important that they look like they were really sick. Like they were AIDS patients … pure realism. It couldn’t look like makeup and it couldn’t look like a Hollywood version of AIDS. It had to be real, which goes along with this director’s style of shooting, and I’m so excited after viewing the film that we accomplished that.

dallas buyers club

How were you able to pull off such a huge feat with just a $ 250 materials budget?

I have no idea how we were able to shoot the entire film with the $ 4.5 million dollar budget that we had. It’s 100 percent the most under-budgeted film I’ve ever done. After looking back, scrounging around, and begging and pleading for supplies from people, then calling in favors and even using food products in the place of prostheses, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m so glad that we had the money that we did because we wouldn’t have got the realistic looks we were able to get. There’s such raw, gritty detail to a lot of the makeup in the film.

We were looking at the pictures, and I said, normally I would use a prosthesis for this, but what can I substitute? It looked like grits and cornmeal on top of other makeup products. So I hand-painted underneath and then I applied a makeup-effects product to make the skin look taut, dry and wrinkly. As that dried, I pressed in grits and cornmeal to make a pustule rash. We first tested it on Matthew, and he loved it and was a big advocate for it. I thought it would be the end of my career.

What was the makeup process like transforming Matthew and Jared throughout the film?

Both Matthew and Jared came to us 40 pounds thinner than they normally are, so they were pretty darn skeletal to start with. But because we would shoot so out of sequence, we would have to change them back and forth from their sickest looks to their healthiest looks many times in a day. To do that, I used products that take the red out of the skin, and I used that all over their face and bodies to make them look pale. Then I started with a contour color, a dark makeup shade, and I contoured every bone that I could find in their face or every part of their body that was showing in the costume that they were wearing that day. As they got more sick and skeletal, I just continued that contouring process further by looking at photos and where I couldn’t see the bones, I actually drew them in. Also, I drew tons of veins on their face and hands when they were at their final stages. I’d add highlight to the bones as well.

To make them look healthy, like they had gained 20 pounds, for Matthew I gave him a slight tan and I’d reverse highlighting and contouring. So everywhere I had gone in before to make them look skeletal and done the dark makeup underneath the bone and light makeup on top of the bone to make it protrude, I did the opposite. For Matthew, I also used dental plumper, these four little pieces that clip on his upper and lower teeth, and they have a bit of dental material that pushes cheeks out from the inside to make them look fuller.

My key makeup artist and I spent four and a half hours contouring every bone on their bodies for their scenes. She started on the back, I started on the front and we just went to town.

dallas buyers club

Why did you use tanning for Matthew’s character, Ron Woodroof?

It was actually Matthew’s idea and it wasn’t necessarily to make him look heavier, but healthier. He totally came up with it. Obviously it’s the opposite of pale, but Matthew and Jared had so many levels of sickness to show the different stages of AIDS throughout. [For] one of the first levels of sickness for Matthew, when he showed up in the morning on set … we didn’t do anything to him. He was super skinny and had stayed out of the sun for months, so he wasn’t anywhere as tan as he normally is. The next level would be to make him pale, so I’d start with the highlighting and contouring. But as a person, he realized he looked healthier when he had a bit of a tan, and it was his idea to add that back in.

I did it all by hand with a tanning product because, again, up to five times a day I’d have to change him back from his sickest look to his healthiest look. So anything I did had to be completely removable instantly.

dallas buyers club

Can you tell me about that bright pink lipstick Jared’s character, Rayon, wore?

I adore that lip color myself and I can tell you it’s a MAC color. That look is actually inspired from the ’60s actress Jane Forth. There is a pretty famous photo of her where she almost has identical makeup on. That, of course, is when Rayon is her healthiest and heaviest. She’s not quite the hot mess she ends up toward the end of the film.

I especially liked waxing off all her eyebrows and being able to do those fun looks where the eyeshadow comes up on the brow. I came up with the idea that Rayon would be influenced by her mother, the first female she probably had contact with in the beauty world. And Rayon would be influenced by actresses of the ‘60s because that’s when her mom was in her heyday. So I choose Jane Forth, actress Brigitte Bardot, model Twiggy and there was also a shout out to Serena from “Bewitched.” Because this was set in 1985 and Rayon is a cool cat, she was also inspired by actresses and singers of the ’80s. So there was also a nod to Dolly Parton and a Pat Benatar look as well.

Were there any scenes in the film that were particularly emotional for you?

Absolutely. Watching the film after so many times, there were scenes where I just couldn’t help but burst out crying — two of them being when Rayon is looking at herself in the mirror right before she dies, and she’s putting on makeup to try to cover up her lesions. She says, I’m going to be a pretty, pretty princess no matter what I do when I meet you. And then the scene in the hospital when she says, I don’t want to die.

Both Jared and Matthew were so into their characters … they were their characters. With Matthew, there were times he was talking to [actress] Jennifer Garner’s character about getting treatment and he actually got so scared that he started crying. And it’s not in the script or the film.

They were very emotional times throughout shooting, but we shot so quickly that we didn’t have time to think about it. We just dealt with the emotions and kept shooting.

Spirit Award Winners 2014 Include ’12 Years A Slave,’ Matthew McConaughey

The 2014 Spirit Awards, Film Independent’s annual honors for the year in indie film, were handed out in Santa Monica, Calif. on Saturday, with “12 Years a Slave” emerging as the day’s big winner. Steve McQueen’s drama earned awards for Best Feature, Best Director (McQueen), Best Supporting Female (Lupita Nyong’o), Best Screenplay (John Ridley) and Best Cinematography (Sean Bobbitt).

“12 Years a Slave” received two other Spirit Award nominations: Best Lead Male for Chiwetel Ejiofor and Best Supporting Male for Michael Fassbender. Both of those categories were dominated by “Dallas Buyers Club,” as stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, respectively, took the lead and supporting trophies.

The other acting winner at the Spirit Awards was Cate Blanchett, who won Best Lead Female for her role in “Blue Jasmine.” It’s expected that all four Spirit winners will repeat at Sunday’s Academy Award ceremony, which would mark the first time in the 29-year history of the independent film awards that its acting honors matched a perfect four for four with the Oscars.

Elsewhere at the Spirit Awards, Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale Station” won Best First Feature. “Fruitvale Station,” which debuted at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, is about the death of Oscar Grant, a black man who was shot by law enforcement officials at the Bay Area Rapid Transit station of the film’s title on New Year’s Day in 2009. During his acceptance speech, Coogler referenced the death of Jonathan Ferrell, who was shot 10 times by a police officer after crashing his car and going to seek help. “I can’t help but think if Jonathan Ferrell looked like Matthew McConaughey he would have been alive today,” Coogler said (via THR). The director was given a standing ovation after his acceptance speech.

Other Spirit Award winners included Bob Nelson (Best First Screenplay for “Nebraska”) and Nat Sanders (Best Editing for “Short Term 12”). A list of 2014 Spirit Award winners is below.
