Little Women Cast Member Sentenced in DUI Crash That Killed Coast Guard Member Picking Up Wife for Her Birthday

Former Little Women: Atlanta cast member Melissa Hancock was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years in prison after she pleaded guilty earlier this year for her role in a fatal car crash, PEOPLE confirms.

Hancock, 26, admitted to four crimes in connection with the November wreck, court records show: aggravated involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, driving the wrong way and failing to obey a highway sign.

On Nov. 5, 2017, about 2 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash involving a wrong way driver in Virginia Beach, a police spokesperson previously told PEOPLE.

Hancock was driving westbound on I-264 in the eastbound lanes when her 2011 Cadillac struck Daniel Dill’s 2009 Mazda head on.

Her “blood alcohol content tested at 0.112 percent two hours after the crash,” authorities told told CBS News.

Dill, a longtime member of the U.S. Coast Guard, was transported to Virginia Beach General Hospital where he died the following day from severe blunt force trauma to his neck and torso, according to the Virginian-Pilot. He was 29.

Dill’s wife, Natalie, had been celebrating her birthday with friends, Dill’s sister, Kelly Vazquez, told PEOPLE at the time. She said Dill arranged to pick his wife up so that “she didn’t drink and drive.”

Dill was en route to get Natalie when Hancock hit his car.

“He was the type of man who would do anything and everything to help others,” Vazquez told PEOPLE last year of her brother. “Just recently he had returned from Puerto Rico where he was assisting with the hurricane relief efforts.”

At her sentencing on Wednesday, Hancock, who appeared on season 2 of Lifetime’s Little Women: Atlanta, described her remorse to Dill’s family and friends.

“Words cannot express my sympathy,” she said, according to the Virginian-Pilot. “I can’t believe what I have done. I could never mean to hurt anyone.” (Reached by PEOPLE, her attorney did not immediately provide a comment on her sentencing.)

Dill’s wife, his friend and five of his family members reportedly read victim impact statements about his character and the loss they suffered.

“He and Natalie made all the right decisions that night,” Dill’s friend Aaron Goh told the judge, the Virginian-Pilot reports. “She made all the wrong decisions. And yet they’re the ones suffering the consequences.”

Joni Sledge, Member Of ‘We Are Family’ Group Sister Sledge, Dead At 60

Joni Sledge, a founding member of the “We Are Family” disco quartet Sister Sledge, was found dead Friday at her home in Phoenix, Arizona. She was 60.

Publicist Biff Warren confirmed Sledge’s death, telling CNN that the cause is unclear. The singer’s family posted about her passing on the group’s official Facebook account.

Born in Philadelphia, Joni was the second-oldest daughter of a Broadway tap dancer and an actress. She and her three sisters ― Debbie, Kim and Kathy ― performed in church before forming a touring group in 1971.

In 1979, working with masterminds of Chic, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, they hit the big time with the album “We Are Family,” whose title track peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 100 chart and spawned many cover versions.

Sister Sledge re-recorded the song with Patti LaBelle, Queen Latifah, Diana Ross and other artists as a Sept. 11 charity endeavor. Spike Lee directed the corresponding music video. Today, “We Are Family” is a staple of wedding playlists. In 2008, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Nothing could match the success of “We Are Family,” but Sister Sledge found hits in “He’s the Greatest Dancer,” “Got to Love Somebody” and a cover of Mary Wells’ “My Guy.” The band performed a medley on a 1984 episode of “The Jeffersons,” including “We Are Family” and Stevie Wonder’s “As.”

Eldest sister Kathy left in 1989 to pursue a solo career, but joined her family for the Sept. 11 tribute and a 2015 performance at the World Meeting of Families festival, where Pope Francis was the guest of honor.

The group remained popular in the U.K. and had several concerts booked throughout 2017, including one as soon as March 18.

‘COPS’ Crew Member Killed By Officer’s Bullet While Filming Armed Robbery In Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — When the call came from an officer who needed help facing an armed robber at a fast-food restaurant, two members of a reality television show riding along with Omaha police hustled to record the confrontation.

In the chaotic scene that unfolded, one crew member was struck by “friendly fire” from one of the officers, a bullet slipping past his bulletproof vest and killing him, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said Wednesday. The robbery suspect was also killed. The weapon he was carrying turned out to be a pellet gun, though it looked and sounded so real that both witnesses and officers were fooled, Schmaderer said.

Bryce Dion, 38, of Boston, the audio supervisor for “Cops,” is the first crew member of the long-running TV show to be killed while filming police in action, executives with the show’s production company said. Police identified the robbery suspect as 32-year-old Cortez Washington, who was on parole from Missouri for a robbery conviction.

Schmaderer told reporters that police and prosecutors have reviewed the “Cops” video of Tuesday’s shooting and found that the officers “had no choice” but to open fire, though a grand jury will still be tasked with investigating.

Schmaderer said the incident began when drive-thru customers alerted Detective Darren Cunningham — on his way to a different robbery scene in midtown Omaha — to an armed robbery at a Wendy’s. Cunningham called for backup, and Officers Brooks Riley and Jason Wilhelm — along with Dion and a “Cops” cameraman — arrived at the restaurant within 15 seconds, Schmaderer said.

The “Cops” crew followed the officers into the restaurant. There, police confronted a hooded and masked man. The cameraman darted into the dining area, crouched behind a low wall and held up his camera to record the confrontation. But Dion didn’t make it past the glass-enclosed entrance to the restaurant. Almost immediately, Schmaderer said, the suspect raised his gun and fired twice.

Schmaderer said three witnesses described Washington firing his gun directly at Cunningham and Riley. “The witnesses described hearing the suspect’s handgun being fired and seeing the slide recoil with the shots,” he said.

Officers returned fire, hitting Washington, who still managed to run from the store. Officers continued firing as Washington — his gun still pointed at police — entered the glass vestibule, Schmaderer said. It was then that a bullet hit Dion in the chest, Schmaderer said.

Washington collapsed in the restaurant parking lot.

After the shooting, police discovered that Washington’s weapon was an air gun that shoots only plastic pellets.

Washington’s criminal record included an accessory to robbery conviction from Missouri for which he was on parole. He moved to Nebraska in September 2013, and his parole was due to expire in June 2017.

“Cops” started on Fox in 1989 and is now shown on the Spike network. According to the “Cops” website, the show has been filmed in at least 140 U.S. cities and three foreign countries.

Langley Productions President John Langley and Executive Producer Morgan Langley described Dion as talented — “one of our best” — who had worked for the show for seven years.

“He did something that he loved and was passionate about,” Morgan Langley said. “We’ve been very fortunate over the years; we’ve never had an incident like this. Now we’re dealing with it, and it’s a very sad day for us.”

In 2010, a TV crew for the A&E reality show “The First 48” recorded a Detroit police raid in which a 7-year-old girl was accidentally killed by an officer. That incident highlighted concerns about whether TV cameras influence police behavior, perhaps encouraging showboating. But some experts and officers believe TV crews increase accountability.

Schmaderer bristled at the suggestion that his officers overreacted knowing that cameras were recording them, calling it “absolutely ridiculous.”

The police chief said he accepted the invitation from “Cops” to film in Omaha in the name of transparency. “Personally, I will live with this forever,” Schmaderer said. “If I’d have known that this would happen, of course, I wouldn’t have done it.”

Maria Von Trapp Dead: Last Surviving Member Of Famous Musical Family Dies At 99

STOWE, Vt. (AP) — Maria von Trapp, the last surviving member and second-eldest daughter of the musical family whose escape from Nazi-occupied Austria was the basis for “The Sound of Music,” has died. She was 99.

Von Trapp died at her home in Vermont on Tuesday, according to her brother Johannes von Trapp. “She was a lovely woman who was one of the few truly good people,” he said. “There wasn’t a mean or miserable bone in her body. I think everyone who knew her would agree with that.”

Maria von Trapp was the last surviving member of the seven original Trapp Family Singers made famous in “The Sound of Music.” She was portrayed as Louisa in the 1959 Broadway musical and a 1965 film, which won the Oscar for best picture.

She was the third child and second-oldest daughter of Austrian Naval Capt. Georg von Trapp and his first wife, Agathe Whitehead von Trapp. Their seven children were the basis for the singing family in the musical and film.

“The Sound of Music” was based loosely on a 1949 book by von Trapp’s second wife, also Maria von Trapp, who died in 1987. It tells the story of an Austrian woman who married a widower with seven children and teaches them music.

In 1938, the family escaped from Nazi-occupied Austria and performed concert tours throughout Europe and then a three-month tour in America. The family settled in Vermont in the early 1940s and opened a ski lodge in Stowe.

Von Trapp played accordion and taught Austrian dance with sister Rosmarie at the lodge.

She wrote in a biography posted on the Trapp Family’s website that she was born in the Austrian Alps after her family fled fighting from World War I and that she was surrounded by music growing up.

“Father played the violin, accordion and mandolin. Mother played piano and violin,” she wrote. “I have fond memories of our grandmother playing the piano for us after meals.”

Her biography on the website also said that she worked as a lay missionary in Papua, New Guinea.

Rosmarie von Trapp, Johannes von Trapp and Eleonore Von Trapp Campbell were born to Georg von Trapp and Maria von Trapp.

Phil Everly Dead: ‘Everly Brothers’ Member Dies At 74

LOS ANGELES, Jan 3 (Reuters) – Phil Everly, whose high, close-harmony singing with his older brother, Don, made the Everly Brothers one of the biggest rock and country acts of the 1950s and early 1960s, died on Friday at the age of 74, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Everly died in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, his wife Patti told the Times for a story on the paper’s website.

Representatives for Phil Everly could not immediately be reached by Reuters for comment on Friday evening.

The Everly Brothers profoundly influenced 1960s-era groups and singer-songwriters ranging from Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who early in their careers called themselves the Foreverly Brothers, to Simon and Garfunkel, the Byrds, the Hollies and the Beach Boys.

“Perhaps even more powerfully than Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers melded country with the emerging sound of Fifties rock & roll,” Rolling Stone magazine said in placing the brothers at No. 33 on its list of the “100 Greatest Artists.”

Phil and Don had an onstage breakup in 1973 that led to a decade-long estrangement, but Phil told Time magazine their relationship had endured.

“Don and I are infamous for our split,” Phil said, “but we’re closer than most brothers. Harmony singing requires that you enlarge yourself, not use any kind of suppression. Harmony is the ultimate love.” (Reporting by Xavier Briand and Dan Whitcomb; Editing by Bernard Orr and Ken Wills)

Pussy Riot Member Maria Alyokhina Released From Jail In Russia Under Amnesty Deal

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia, Dec 23 (Reuters) – Pussy Riot punk band member Maria Alyokhina walked free from jail on Monday, immediately dismissing the Kremlin’s amnesty that granted her early release as a stunt that would not change her attitude to President Vladimir Putin.

Alyokhina, 25, one of two women serving two-year sentences for a profanity-laced protest against Putin in a Russian Orthodox church in 2012, was released under the amnesty the president has said would show the Russian state is humane.

They were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred for their “punk prayer” criticising Putin’s ties to the Church, and had been due for release in March.

Alyokhina echoed critics who said the amnesty proposed by Putin was far too narrow and appeared aimed at deflecting criticism over human rights before Russia hosts the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi in February.

“I do not think it is a humanitarian act, I think it is a PR stunt,” she said by telephone in comments to the Russian Internet and TV channel Dozhd. “My attitude to the president has not changed.”

In addition to the amnesty, Putin unexpectedly pardoned Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the Russian former oil tycoon who is widely seen by Kremlin critics and Western politicians as a political prisoner.

Khodorkovsky, who was freed after more than a decade in jail and flown to Germany, said Putin is seeking to improve Russia’s image while also showing that he is confident in his grip on power after weathering large opposition protests and winning a third term last year.

Putin wants to send “a signal to society and the world that he feels secure and is not afraid”, Khodorkovsky said in an interview with he Russian magazine the New Times.

Lawyers say the amnesty will also enable 30 people arrested in Russia after a Greenpeace protest against Arctic oil drilling to avoid trial on hooliganism charges, removing another irritant in ties with the West.

Putin said the amnesty was not drafted with the Greenpeace activists or Pussy Riot in mind. Looking confident and relaxed during an annual news conference last week, he described Pussy Riot’s protest as disgraceful, saying it “went beyond all boundaries”.

Human rights activists have said the amnesty is far too limited, estimating will free fewer than 1,500 convicts, a small fraction of the nearly 700,000 Russians behind bars.

“I’M NOT AFRAID”

Alyokhina, bundled in a thick green prison jacket and with her long curly hair loose, smiled as she left detention in the company of her lawyer and told Reuters she was feeling well.

She said that had it have been possible for her to refuse the amnesty, she would done so out of solidarity for those still in jail and that she now planned to lobby for prisoners rights.

“I was keen to reject this amnesty, but the prison had received an order that is why I was brought here,” she told Reuters.

“I would like now to deal with the issue of prison, I would like to engage in human rights … I’m not afraid of anything anymore – believe me.”

Pyotr Verzilov, the husband of fellow band member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 24, who is also due to be freed under the amnesty, which covered inmates convicted of hooliganism and mothers of young children, was awaiting her release outside a jail in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk.

A third band member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was released last year when a judge suspended her sentence on appeal.

Tolokonnikova’s father Andrei told Reuters last week he sees his daughter’s planned release not an act of mercy but “an absolutely cynical game” of public relations ahead of the Olympics. (Additional reporting and writing Alissa de Carbonnel; Editing by Alison Williams)
