Study Says Plus-Size Models Are Good For Our Mental Health

We shouldn’t need science to convince us that representation of diverse body types in the media is a good thing, but science just made a pretty solid case for it anyway.

A new study published by Florida State University last week titled, “Is plus size equal? The positive impact of average and plus-sized media fashion models on women’s cognitive resource allocation, social comparisons, and body satisfaction,” found that women tend to experience deeper body satisfaction and retain memory of plus-size models more than when they see imagery of average size and thinner models.

The study, co-authored by assistant professors Russell Clayton and Jessica Ridgway, monitored 49 college women who struggle with body satisfaction. After showing the women images of plus-size, average and thinner models, the positive reaction and takeaway was greater on visuals of average models, and even moreso on plus-size models.

“Women reported the greatest body satisfaction and the least amount of social comparisons when viewing plus-size models, but body satisfaction decreased and social comparisons increased when viewing average sized followed by thin size models,” the study said.

A post shared by PRECIOUS LEE (@preciousleexoxo) on

It also pointed out, unsurprisingly, that exposure to “unrealistic-sized media models” has a negative effect on the consumer’s “mental and physical health, including experiencing lower body satisfaction.”

When you consider not only the success that models like Ashley Graham and Precious Lee have seen in recent years, but also the increasing amount of brands opting to include a diverse range of body shapes and sizes in their campaigns and the overwhelmingly positive reaction those advertisements have garnered from consumers, the data here is not all that surprising.

A post shared by Denise Bidot (@denisebidot) on

Still, in an industry fraught with a lack of diversity and at times, questionable motives from brands which might be attempting to capitalize on and take advantage of the “trendy” body positive movement, it’s encouraging to see that inclusivity is actually accomplishing a way more important goal: Giving women confidence, providing them with role models they can relate to and prompting a more positive relationship with their own bodies.

“Research has overwhelmingly found that exposure to unrealistically sized media models results in women reporting less satisfaction with their overall appearance,” the study said.

Here’s hoping this development gives brands yet another reason to perpetuate a more realistic message to their consumers.

How To Tell A New Partner You Have A Mental Illness

I cried in his arms our first night together. I’m not good, I kept repeating, tears falling into my ears as he caressed my face. I knew what love required, and I knew that, time and again, I’d failed at giving it because of the ways my anxiety distorted my thinking, and my panic disorder made me alternately dependent, selfish, and needy.

I wanted to write him a guide for loving me, so he could understand that when I tried to break up with him when one thing went wrong, when I changed plans because I didn’t feel like I could leave my house, when I criticized him much too harshly, it was because of faulty thought patterns and neurochemical flare-ups, not because I didn’t love him.

Love is hard for nearly everyone. But for those with anxiety disorders and other mental illnesses, love can be a minefield. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that 18.5 percent of adults in this country live with a diagnosed mental illness. That’s roughly 1 in 5 people, or 44 million total.

For years, my relationships would end abruptly because I hadn’t prepared the men I loved for the ways I’d lash out when I became claustrophobic; how I’d become distant and cold when panicked, and suddenly clingy and hot when the panic had passed; how I’d pick them apart against my will, obsessing over perceived shortcomings and imperfections, burning with embarrassment when they held forth at dinner parties or cowering with shame when I deemed them too shy.

After I ended my last relationship, I worked with a therapist on how to prepare myself and my partners for being in a romantic relationship not only with me, but with my anxiety and panic ― and how my partner could support me, himself, and us through it.

Dr. Ayelet Krieger, a psychologist who practices in the Bay Area, believes disclosing a mental illness early in a relationship is crucial.

“I like to talk about striking when the iron is cold,” she says. “You don’t want to tell your partner about your diagnosis when you’re in the throes of a crisis. It’s more productive to talk about it when you’re calm.”

Avi Steinhardt, a licensed clinical social worker in Brooklyn, New York, agrees. “Many of the risks of disclosing a mental illness are similar to the risks of falling in love,” he says. “How will this new, suddenly important person react? Will it scare them away? Unfortunately there is still stigma and misconceptions about mental illness in our culture, so there’s a good chance that this person has absorbed some misinformation over the years. But how a person responds to your disclosure may tell you a lot about this person’s sensitivity, biases, and capacity to listen with an open heart. If there is a risk that they won’t be sensitive enough, it is also good to know early on that this person would likely not be a good match.”

Rebecca Chamaa, who has paranoid schizophrenia, was dating her boyfriend long-distance. About three months into the relationship, she was hospitalized after a suicide attempt.

“After my release, I told him about my diagnosis,” she recalled. “He told me he didn’t know if he could handle it. I said, ‘Fair enough.’ But we were in love. The information may have given him pause, but it didn’t scare him away.”

“We were married less than a year later, and since that time my husband has been my number one fan and biggest help and support,” she went on. “I’m glad I was honest with him, and he was able to decide whether he wanted to give our relationship a try or walk away. The best thing that ever happened to me is that he stayed.”

They have now been married for 19 years.

Disclosing can be a valuable litmus test of whether a partner is a good long-term match. Sometimes, it turns out they’re not. Judith (who asked to be identified by a pseudonym to protect her privacy) has complex post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, experienced this when she disclosed to a new partner.

“The first time I spent the night, the sound of his belt buckle as he undressed caused me to completely freeze and shut down, and I had to explain,” she remembers.

At first he was gentle with her, and very understanding. But a few months later, when he witnessed her depression, he didn’t know how to react.

“He had only seen the charming, adventurous optimist I was when healthy,” she said. “When my physical and mental health crashed, he couldn’t wrap his head around the amount of pain I was in, no matter how much I tried to explain it.”

It’s sometimes difficult for those who have never experienced a mental illness to grasp how debilitating it can be.

“You can say you’re drowning, but a fish has no frame of reference for that experience,” Judith says. “I thought I was disclosing fully, but he didn’t understand until I texted him at work to tell him that one of my friends was taking me to the psychiatric ER because I was suicidal.”

If Judith could do it over, she would be much more explicit in describing the seriousness of her depression.

“I didn’t realize he didn’t understand the difference between the clinical use of the term ‘depression’ and its popular use,” she said. “Next time, I will spell it out a lot more clearly.”

The good news is that educating oneself and one’s partner about mental illness is easier than it’s ever been. “There’s so much information online and blogs kept by people who struggle with mental health,” Krieger says. “The more you learn, the more you realize how common these are.”

Another positive aspect of early disclosure is that it can jump-start vulnerability. When one person opens up about something sensitive or challenging, it can elicit trust and an equal willingness to be vulnerable in the other. “It’s rare there’s a relationship in which one person is perfect and one is complicated,” Krieger says. “Both people usually have ‘stuff.’ Disclosing is dropping into that trust and vulnerability sooner.”

Iesha Williams waited 11 months and until she was married to tell her husband about her anxiety and depression.

“It wasn’t a planned conversation,” she remembers. “We talked about my depression on the anniversary of losing a baby, which was an emotional trigger. The depression was intense and seemed inescapable. Thankfully, he listened and was attentive to what I expressed.”

“He admitted to not fully understanding, but did everything in his power to support me,” she went on. “Disclosing my struggles made us stronger and better able to support, understand, and love one another. I’m very glad I disclosed.”

Steinhardt believes these conversations often result in both partners feeling more known, accepted, and loved.

“I can’t think of a romantic relationship where we don’t need to tell one another how we need to be loved, what our challenges are, our triggers, our weaknesses,” he says.

Confronting something this real and personal early in a relationship can be a catapult into deep intimacy and trust.

I told Joel everything right away, that first night. He responded beautifully, holding me and sharing painful aspects of his own life. Within the first few weeks, I taught him about common anxiety-induced relationship pitfalls, and more about panic. Four months in, he has been unfailingly responsive and calm, encouraging and nurturing, and inspires me to be the same with him.

Still, I’ve tried to end it a few times, to save us both the trouble. He reminds me this is part of it: the doubting, the fear, the bliss.

One evening I arrived late to a concert and saw him sitting there, eyes closed, body still. We walked wordlessly toward each other through the crowd and rubbed our faces together, swaying slowly. I let myself submit just the smallest bit more. A woman near us said, “Ah, love.”

We listened to the music.

Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge Launch Mental Health Film Series

This is the kind of royal treatment mental health deserves.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are yet again lending their voice to those living with mental illness, this time with a 10-part film series through their mental health campaign Heads Together.

The initiative, which is called #OKToSay, features videos on the importance of speaking up for mental health. The goal is to encourage more people to start discussions around emotional well-being. Prince Harry is also participating in the project.

Attitudes to mental health are at a tipping point,” the royals said in a statement. “We hope these films show people how simple conversations can change the direction of an entire life. Please share them with your friends and families and join us in a national conversation on mental health in the weeks ahead.”

Each video showcases people with mental health issues as they talk about how acknowledging their condition helped them learn to accept and manage it. They also highlight stories about the person’s first time talking about mental health with a loved one. The conversations explore the importance of not staying silent when it comes mental illness.

The trio launched the new videos on Thursday right before World Health Day, which this year aims to focus on depression and the treatment gap for the disorder. Recent data from the World Health Organization found that depression rates have climbed 18 percent in the last decade. More than 300 million people globally experience the mental health condition, yet nearly half of them don’t get treatment.

Previous research suggests people may avoid seeking help due fear of shame from their peers. Public advocacy like William, Kate and Harry’s can help change that, according to experts.

Head on over to the Heads Together campaign’s website to watch the #OKToSay videos and learn more about the project.

Duchess Kate Nails Why People Don’t Seek Mental Health Help

The Duchess of Cambridge is yet again schooling the world on negative mental health stereotypes.

The duchess, along with Prince William and Prince Harry, spoke out about how stigma prevents people with mental illness from seeking support. The brief speech by the former Kate Middleton was part of an event in London on Tuesday for Heads Together, the royals’ mental health charity.

“The challenge that so many people have is not knowing how to take that first step of reaching out to another person for help. Admitting that they are not coping,” she said. “Fear, or reticence, or a sense of not wanting to burden another, means that people suffer in silence ― allowing the problem to grow larger and larger unchecked.

Kate couldn’t have summed it up better. Too often shame silences those with a mental health condition. And what’s worse is that it could be damaging to that person’s health: Research shows that the misconceptions surrounding behavioral health conditions often stand in the way of people getting professional treatment.

Approximately one in four adults globally experience a mental health issue in a given year. That number increases when you factor in children. Experts say anxiety disorders among kids are one of the most common pediatric problems

This is another mental health issue the royals are hoping to tackle. Last year, Kate penned an essay for The Huffington Post U.K. where she addressed the consequences that come with ignoring a child’s psychological well-being.

“The mental health of our children must be seen as every bit as important as their physical health,” she wrote. “For too long we have been embarrassed to admit when our children need emotional or psychiatric help, worried that the stigma associated with these problems would be detrimental to their futures.”

If we’re being honest, we could listen to this family talk about mental health all day. Keep it up, guys!

The Amazing Way This NFL Team Just Stepped Up For Mental Health

The New York Jets may not be at the top of the NFL standings this season, but they’re certainly leading the charge when it comes to mental health advocacy.

Multiple Jets players sported lime green cleats for Project 375, a mental health organization founded by Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall, during Monday night’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. The show of support was part of a broader NFL initiative that allows players to support charities through footwear, My Cause My Cleats.

The cleats featured the Project 375 logo and the hashtag #MindOverMatter, which Marshall uses regularly on social media as a way to speak out about mental health.

He hopes the shoes “free our world from the stigma that handcuffs us from helping those suffering,” he wrote on Instagram.

An estimated one in five adults in the U.S. will experience a mental health issue in a given year. However, despite the fact they’re so common, there’s still a negative stereotype surrounding the conditions.

The idea still persists that mental illness is something to joke about ― and it’s this viewpoint that often prevents those at risk from seeking professional treatment. And it’s stigma that’s exactly why public advocacy matters: Experts say celebrity awareness can help shatter some of those damaging misconceptions.

Marshall has been giving mental health a national platform for the past few years. After being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, he started Project 375 as a way to help those experiencing a mental health condition. He’s also given speeches and helped design other sportswear to support the cause.

We need to accept that mental illness is a disease — and like any other disease, it needs stronger research, early screening and treatment, especially for young people,” Marshall wrote in a Huffington Post piece in 2015. “We need more robust education in schools, the enlightened support of news and entertainment media, and the advocacy of high-profile figures, like myself, willing to step forward.”

Props to the NFL star for giving mental health the visibility it deserves. And stylishly, we might add.

How City Living May Be Harming Your Mental Health, And What You Can Do About It

City life can take a serious toll on your mental health. Research has shown that urban dwellers are more likely to suffer from chronic stress and mental illness, particularly depression.

But according to new research, the antidote to those city blues could be as simple as a walk in the park.

A Stanford University study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that walking in nature reduces rumination — the type of obsessive negative thinking and self-criticism that plays a central role in depression and anxiety disorders.

“Cities are known for higher levels of mental illness such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia,” study co-author Greg Bratman, a doctoral student at the university’s School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, told The Huffington Post in an email. “While the underlying causes are doubtless complex and multifaceted, our findings and those of others highlight the benefits of nature experience.”

Take a hike. For the study, the researchers asked 38 mostly healthy men and women to answer questions about their tendency to ruminate, and had them undergo brain scans measuring activity of a particular brain region that tends to light up during this type of thinking. Then, each participant went on a 90-minute walk in either a green space or an urban area.

After walking in nature, participants reported experiencing less rumination, and brain scans revealed less activity in brain regions associated with repetitive negative thinking. Walking through an urban areas, however, had no effect on rumination.

The findings suggest that spending time in nature may improve improve mental well-being by warding off stress and negative thinking.

“Nature experience may help ‘buffer’ against the stressors of urban life, and might thereby contribute to a lowered risk factor for the onset of depression,” Bratman said.

Sadness and the city. If you live in a fast-paced city, you don’t have move to the country or plan a camping trip to improve your well-being — spending time in your city’s parks can still be beneficial. A 2013 British study found that walking through urban green spaces can put the brain into a state of meditation.

By bringing more pockets of nature into cities — whether on rooftops, in empty lots or even along old railroad tracks — urban planners and policymakers can help improve the mental health of their inhabitants.

“City planners are starting to take account of mental health, in addition to all the other values of nature,” Bratman said. “It’s important to incorporate these ‘psychological ecosystem services’ into urban design, to help bring nature to the city, and to improve easy access to these landscapes and nature experience.”

It’s an issue that will only continue to become more pressing. Today, more than 50 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and that number is only growing. By 2050, more than 70 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities, and many of those people will have little to no contact with nature, Bratman noted.

“We’re in a unique moment in human history,” he said. “Never before have so many people lived in cities, and never before have people been so disconnected from the natural world.”

The SCOTUS Decision That’s Really Good For Mental Health (Hint: It’s Not Obamacare)

The Supreme Court of the United States made a historic ruling on same-sex marriage on Friday, voting 5 to 4 in favor of legalizing all unions. Not only does this allow everyone to marry the person they love, regardless of sexual orientation, but it’s also a step forward for mental health in a community that’s often stigmatized.

The SCOTUS decision is a leap in the right direction — especially when it comes to boosting the mental health of LGBT individuals.

According to the American Psychological Association, marriage boosts psychosocial and mental health due to the moral, social and even economic support extended to married couples in our society — and denial of those rights may impose certain risks when it comes to well-being. A 2012 University of California, Los Angeles study found that psychological distress is lower among gay, lesbian and bisexual couples who are allowed to be legally married, compared with those in unions that are not legally recognized.

In other words, science suggests that letting people marry who they want boosts mental and maybe even physical health.

The UCLA study isn’t the only evidence that champions legalized same-sex marriage for this reason. Around 2004, when state bans on same-sex marriage started to peak, the National Institutes of Mental Health conducted a survey that examined respondents’ mental health. Results showed gay, lesbian or bisexual individuals who lived in states where their unions were banned experienced a notable increase in psychiatric disorders, NPR reported, including mood disorders and alcohol-use disorder.

Additionally, when same-sex marriage laws passed in Massachusetts in 2003, research found that gay men experienced fewer stress-related disorders and lower health care use, suggesting a potential link between the two events.

Social exclusion may also take a toll on mental health, studies show, something the LGBT community has been all too familiar with when it comes to marriage. “It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion on the ruling. “Their hope is to not be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions.”

Fundamentally, love of all kinds contributes to several health perks, including a healthier heart, better mood and even improved longevity. While love doesn’t require marriage, a celebration of love can be viewed as a celebration of this kind of health. Ruling in favor of same-sex marriage also rules in favor of a happy, healthy mind by creating a more inclusive community free from isolation — and that’s something we can all support.

Mental Health Monitoring Goes Mobile

2015-02-04-Joni_Blecher_150x150.jpgBy Joni Blecher
Joni Blecher is a freelance writer who has spent her career covering tech and a myriad of lifestyle topics. When she’s not writing, you can find her exploring the food scene in Portland, Oregon.

There are countless devices you can strap to your body that will monitor your physical activity, track your vitals, even tell you to stop slouching. You may have also heard about a competition to develop a Star Trek-inspired medical tricorder capable of diagnosing more than a dozen medical conditions and capturing five vital signs. Yet in a nation increasingly obsessed with counting steps taken, calories burned, and minutes spent sitting or sleeping, mental health issues remain largely taboo — even though nearly 20 percent of adults in the U.S. are affected by some form of mental illness.

But what if there was a device you could carry around every day that could help you discreetly monitor and manage things like insomnia, PTSD, depression, anxiety and bipolar disorders, or schizophrenia?

There is. It’s your phone.

WhatsMyM3

Ever wondered if you’re clinically depressed or just having a bad day? There’s a diagnostic test that will let you know if it’s time to call a therapist, or go get a bowl of ice cream. Just download the M3 mood screen test to your phone to find out.

Created by a group of mental health doctors, professors and therapists, WhatsMyM3 is a basic app that includes mental health resources, a history of test results, and a set of 29 questions to help rate your mood and anxiety symptoms. At the end of the questionnaire, you get a score that provides you an analysis of your risk for depression, anxiety and bipolar disorders, and PTSD. You can print, email or allow a health care professional to access your results online.

Be aware that your M3 score is not a diagnosis (only a medical professional can provide that), but it can help you decide if it’s time seek professional help.

CBT-i

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs recently launched a mobile app store geared toward veterans and VA care teams. The apps on the site are free, but some require a special login as they are linked to a patient’s VA Electronic Health Record. There are many apps that are designed to help users deal with medical issues such as concussions, PTSD, weight management, and more.

One of the apps on the site is the CBT-i Coach, which is designed to help with insomnia. Based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia in Veterans, the app was developed by VA’s National Center for PTSD, Stanford School of Medicine, and Department of Defense’s National Center for Telehealth and Technology. The free app (available for iOS and Android) includes guided meditation, a sleep diary, relaxation exercises, and tools to help create new sleep habits.

While the app isn’t just for veterans, CBT-i should be used in conjunction with a CBT in-person therapy program, and not as a standalone tool to cure your insomnia.

Ginger.io

What began as a thesis at MIT Media Lab to find out if your phone could detect when you’re not feeling well became an app that will alert a doctor when a patient isn’t doing well. That’s the idea behind Ginger.io. Initially, the app was designed to help with depression and behavioral health issues (anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia), but it’s also in trials to help with heart disease and chronic pain.

Once installed on your phone, the app works behind the scenes to gather information about where you go, your call data, text message patterns, and even motion data from the accelerometer. When significant deviations occur, an alert is sent to you and your care provider, who can then decide if treatment is needed. While the app is available for iOS and Android devices, only a health care provider or professional can activate it.

Ginger.io provides a way to get ahead of issues before they escalate, and it can alert your doctor to things you might forget to mention or think are irrelevant.

Using apps to monitor something as sensitive as mental health of course raises questions about legitimacy and security. Before downloading any app, it’s important to know its source, its developers (health care professionals or someone else), and how it uses the data it collects. Much of this information can be found on the iTunes and Google Play app listing page and at the developer’s website.

Another question is accuracy: what if you try to “cheat” the questions to mask your symptoms, or your phone is lost or stolen? That’s where a doctor of therapist comes in. The data these apps collect can certainly help fill in gaps, but they don’t provide a complete picture.

Filmmaker Fights the Stigma Against Mental Illness

2015-03-14-1426349822-1318183-Directing.jpgThe best thing about the #MyMentalHealthStory campaign I launched in December of 2014 is I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people. In this interview, get to know filmmaker, Jeff Holiday. Here Jeff shares what inspired him to become a storyteller and how his family’s experience with mental illness and suicide has shaped the making of his short film, Boulevard.

Visit www.jeffholiday.com and www.boulevardthefilm.com to learn more about Jeff and his film.

Tell us about your background and film making experience.

My love for storytelling dates back to when I was very young. At age 12 my parents bought me my first video camera for Christmas. My friends and I would put together short little movies, commercials and stop motion videos, most of which are pretty embarrassing to watch now.

In 2005, right after my grandparents’ death, while at Floyd Central High School, I always wondered what was happening inside the school’s radio/TV room on my way to class. The following year I spent as much time as possible in that studio. Looking back, I was feeling lost and I used my ability to create things to deal with what was bothering me. This was just magnified after my grandparents’ death.

My experience in high school was great and led to me to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications at Ball State University (BSU) and by my senior year I became the Executive Producer on PBS’s Connections Live, an Emmy Award winning news magazine show. I’m currently completing my Master of Arts in Digital Storytelling at BSU and I’ll graduate this May.

Your latest film project, Boulevard, is set in the future where mental illness is a myth and suicide is a crime. The story is about a man named Nathan who loses of his wife to suicide and his journey to understand if he could have prevented her death. I have read this plot was inspired by the murder-suicide of your own grandparents, Wayne and Shelby Hinton, in May 2005. Do you feel the main character Nathan is patterned after you and your experiences?

Yes, the character Nathan is patterned after my life although Nathan’s circumstances are different from mine and Boulevard is a different story from my own. For me, I knew making this film would emulate my past because so much creativity is driven by those experiences. And even though I’ve wanted to tell a story about suicide for a long time, I was hesitant because I was afraid of what people might think. But I stopped caring about others judgments and realized this type of story needed to be told.

Have you personally encountered stigma as it relates to the death of your grandparents?

I’ve encountered the stigma too many times to count, for a longtime I just avoided the conversation altogether. Most of my college friends didn’t know about my grandparents’ death until I started working on Boulevard. In getting Boulevard off the ground, I shared my story with those who were working on the film. It was difficult to tell colleagues my grandfather committed suicide, but even harder to share how he took my grandmother’s life. I just didn’t know how to approach it at first. But the more I told my story, the easier it got and I eventually shared my story with everyone who I worked with.

What does your family think about this film project?

At first I was worried about what my family might think, but they have been extremely supportive of my efforts. The reason I can so easily speak about my experience is because my family has encouraged me to talk about it. The subject of mental illness and my grandparents’ death has never been a secret in my family. If a family member wishes to talk about it, they are not discouraged. When we get together, the topic always comes up because it is part of who we are now.

Your desire to fight the stigma around mental illness is admirable. With one million people who die annually by committing suicide, we still have much work to do. Can you discuss how this film will educate about mental illness?

My goal is to create a film that is entertaining but also educational and thought provoking. While Boulevard is just one perspective — my perspective — out of millions, I hope it can help start conversations about mental illness independent of whether a person is personally struggling or not. The message of Boulevard will be very clear; the stigma has gone on for too long and we must stop it. Start your own conversation.

Where are you in the process of producing and completing Boulevard?

We are currently in pre-production for Boulevard and have completed casting the main roles and we will start filming in April. Once the film is complete, I’ll take Boulevard to the film festival circuit for the attention it deserves. As for distribution, I’m working on finding a place, but I can assure you I’ll give it away for free if I have to. I didn’t create this film to make money.

Why should people see this movie?

I think people should see Boulevard because it’s a different take on the topic of mental illness. While I’ve worked extensively in documentary filmmaking, and believe in its ability to persuade and encourage social change, it does have its limitation in that the audience is often limited to those who are already aware of the stigma and the need for change. In other words, it is preaching to the choir. By creating a fictional film the audience begins to broaden, reaching those who are unaware of the stigma many face.

Is there anything else you want to share with readers?

People always ask me if I’d do anything to bring my grandparents back. Obviously yes, I’d give nearly anything to see them again. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized something; while I’d do anything to see them again — it’s hard to ignore how much I’ve learned and grown from my experiences after their deaths. They gave me a lot while they were alive, and I feel they continue to do so even now.

30-Day Mental Detox

I started this journey about a month ago, and I have to admit I was the biggest skeptic of all. It was a journey of the physical body, which was trying to reach a connection with the soul. It was a journey of saying goodbye to the old brain that had bouts of negativity and sadness and hello to a new mind that exuded light and positive energy. I had no clue what and if I even had a destination in mind, but I wanted to give it my best anyway.

I started the month with a gratitude journal. Every single day before I went to bed I wrote five things I was grateful for. They had to be something different each day; it was kind of a struggle in the beginning. As all mothers know, we are always most grateful for our children’s health and safety. I challenged myself and decided to keep that as my “I am always grateful for that.” Aside from that, I had to find five more things. I really had to push my brain, but eventually, it became, “I am thankful for being able to make someone laugh,” or ” I am thankful for being able to go for a walk and see a beautiful butterfly.”

To people, maybe these were small things, but for me, I started to notice these small, tiny things. I forced myself to look for things to be grateful for, which allowed me to see goodness in almost everything. Honestly, however it has still been difficult. Days when I felt like everything was going wrong for me, it was so hard to write in the journal. For nine days out of 30, I wasn’t able to find five things.

The next thing I did was visualization. I made a vision board and every morning and before going to sleep I sat on my bed with my eyes closed and thought about the things on my vision board. I imagined myself doing what I wanted to do, which was being appreciated for the love of my life — writing. I started to drift off many times, but I would continue to meditate until I got it right. And yes, some of my visualization came true. I had so many people write to me, who had read my posts on the Huffington Post. The most amazing thing happened, I got an email from Arianna Huffington and she said she had enjoyed my post! Talk about dreams coming true.

The other thing that I did was, after my visualization every morning, I told myself, “Today was going to be the best day of my life,” some days were so bad that I wanted to just stop; however, there were days that things started to happen or maybe I started to notice the good things. I started to write again, people enjoyed what I wrote, I went to a Lionel Richie concert, had my laser eye surgery done (I haven’t been able to see with my own eyes for the past 30 some years) and some other small things.

Was the 30-day experiment successful? Was I able to change my mindset and be more positive? I would say around 40 percent, yes. Everything was the same but I had new eyes (literally and metaphorically), I could see that I was a happier person and I smiled more. I would enjoy things more, my anxiety about things is less and I believe I will conquer the world — with the help of my writing!

I do plan to continue my journey for another 30 days. I will try to incorporate a few more things which I will share with you guys next week.
