Jussara Lee Taking Her Message of Sustainability to a Multisensory Performance in New York

SECONDHAND NEWS: Committed to sustainability as an individual, designer and business owner, Jussara Lee used that ideology as a rookie costume designer for “Inside the Wild Heart.”
Based on the writings of one of Brazil’s most famous writers, Clarice Lispector, the immersive theatrical experience was conceived by Andressa Furletti and Debora Balardini and directed by Linda Wise. The show bows Thursday in New York. Lee was initially approached by the Brazilian theater company Group.BR about helping to fund the production. She offered to pitch in with the cast’s attire instead.
Lee described Lispector’s work as “amazing,” but the project’s upcycling is what really sold her. Working with a low budget meant “that it was all about secondhand and vintage shopping. I was very interested in that and told them, ‘We’ll make adjustments. We’ll make things fit. That’s what we do best,’” said Lee, adding that she liked the idea of reusing “things that had already been extracted and polluted. There is so much clean-up to do and so much stuff in this world.””
In addition, the project forced her to switch up her usual routine and do some thrifting at Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn and “all the other underlings.” It was also an

Can Country Music and ‘Message Songs’ Get Along? Kacey Musgraves, Luke Bryan and Others Make Their Case

A sense of inclusion in Nashville occasionally manifests in a socially conscious single. This is nothing new for country music, which has a long history of “message songs,” some forward leaning (Loretta Lynn’s feminist “The Pill”), some arguably not so much (Merle Haggard’s “Fightin’ Side of Me”). In the 2010s, a song like Kacey Musgraves’ […]

Lady Gaga Shares Message Before Grammys About Transforming ‘Grief’ That Inspired Joanne Into ‘Hope’

Just hours before the 2018 Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga shared a touching message about the late aunt who inspired her latest album Joanne.

“I have carried a deep grief in my heart over my family’s tragedy,” she wrote on social media, referring to her late aunt, Joanne Stefani Germanotta, who died of lupus complications at age 19.

“The loss of Joanne affected my father so deeply that it affected me. When he cried, I cried. When he was angry, I was angry. When he was hurt, I hurt,” she continued.

She added, “Today I transform this grief to hope and healing. After 10 years with you I still get nervous before the Grammys, but I know I have an angel with me.”

The 31-year-old songstress also shared the heartfelt message alongside a picture of “me and @MarcRonson writing #Joanne.”

“I love you little monsters,” she added.

Be sure to check out PEOPLE’s full Grammys coverage to get the latest news on music’s big night.

In addition to performing at the Grammys this year, Gaga has been nominated for best pop solo performance (“Million Reasons”) and best pop vocal album (Joanne).

The singer had previously shared how “honored” she felt to be performing from her deeply personal album at the award show.

“I’m so honored to be singing from #Joanne,” she wrote on Saturday, adding, “This album and moment with little monsters means so much to me.”

Though the pop star was born nearly 12 years after Joanne’s death, she remains one of Gaga’s biggest influences.

“When Mark and I wrote it, the decision to name the album that was in tribute to my father’s sister who died when she was 19,” she told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe of her poet/painter aunt in September 2016, one month before her album’s release.

She went on to reveal that the album encompassed “everything about Joanne, which also happens to be my middle name.”

“It’s all the toughness of the pain of losing her that made us all strong and made us who we are,” Gaga added. “She is the woman of my past who is becoming and helping me bring more of my honest woman self into the future.”

On Saturday, the 31-year-old was also spotted stepping out hand-in-hand with  boyfriend Christian Carino as they made their way to Marta Italian Restaurant in New York City following Grammys rehearsals on Saturday.

PEOPLE confirmed Gaga and Carino’s romance in February 2017, weeks after the budding couple was spotted getting affectionate at a Kings of Leon concert and cuddling on the Super Bowl LI field.

The 60th annual Grammy Awards, hosted by James Corden, are broadcast live from Madison Square Garden in New York City on CBS starting at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Fifth Harmony’s Ally Brooke Posts Inspiring Message Before She Takes the VMA Stage: ‘Dreams Do Come True!’

Ahead of the highly anticipated Fifth Harmony appearance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Ally Brooke shared an inspiring post on Instagram about her career and living her dream.

The 24-year-old singer — who has been performing since the age of 9 — shared a tweet she posted in 2012 about the VMAs being a source of inspiration for the singer. “Watching the VMAs just inspires & motivates me even more 🙂 #dreamer #believer #oneday,” Brooke wrote back in the day.

“On September 6, 2012, I tweeted this….today, August 27, 2017 I will be taking the VMA stage with my girls….can’t describe my emotion,” Brooke wrote. “It’s hard for me to not breakdown in tears as I read this….thank you to GOD for this opportunity….it’s something I’ve dreamed of for so long….my cup of joy & gratitude is overflowing….I want to encourage everyone out there to KEEP DREAMING.

“Work hard. Follow your heart! Dreams do come true! Always believe. I am taking every millisecond in today. And will leave my heart on that stage tonight, more than I ever have 💛.”

Brooke’s career launched after the San Antonio native auditioned for TV’s The X Factor in 2012. It was there that she landed a spot on what would eventually become Fifth Harmony. Although 5H didn’t win the televised competition, the group went on to have success of their own.

In May, Brooke opened up to PEOPLE Chica about 5H as well as her “biggest inspiration” — the late Tejano singer, Selena Quintanilla.

“Selena is my angel,” Brooke said. “She is my biggest inspiration. Being from San Antonio, Texas, I really feel that connection to her because she had a lot of performances and a lot of her most iconic performances in San Antonio. Back in my hometown, we love her. We all as a community celebrate her and adore her. We keep her memory alive.”

PEOPLE Now spoke with the foursome —  Lauren Jauregui, Brooke, Dinah Jane and Normani Kordei — backstage during their Thursday rehearsals for the VMAs, where they will perform their new hit single “Down.”

“We’re extremely excited,” said Jauregui. “This is definitely one of the biggest moments of our careers — something we’ve worked so hard for to get to a place where people would want us on the stage, so we’re excited as heck for it.”

The group released their third and self-titled studio album — their first without former fifth member Camila Cabello — on Friday.

Bono Has A Message For Young Christian Artists

U2 musician Bono has spent years reading and learning from the poetry of the Psalms, a book of the Bible that contains ancient hymns.

If there’s one thing Bono has realized from his studies, it’s that art always requires honesty.

During a conversation with Fuller Studio, the rock star spoke at length about the intersection of faith and art, particularly art that is produced by Christians.

“I would really like this conversation to unlock some artists,” the singer, a devout Christian, said. “Because I think there are trapped artists and I’d like them to be untrapped.”

In a previous dialogue with Fuller Studio released April 2016, Bono compared the Psalms with contemporary Christian worship music ― and found modern-day praise music to be sorely lacking. He argued that some contemporary worship music lacks the range of raw emotions that’s contained within the Psalms.

In the new video series, released this April, Bono revisited the topic with Fuller Theological Seminary’s professor David O. Taylor. He offered further insights into how deeply the Psalms have influenced his life and his music.

Before taping the new interview, Bono said he reread the Songs of Ascents ― a series of Psalms that were possibly sung by Jewish pilgrims as they made a trip to Jerusalem. Within those few chapters, Bono said he found songs about peace, protection, laughter, hubris, rage, tears, humility, and unity.

“Okay, that’s just Songs of Ascent. They had utility. And why is it in Christian music, I can’t find them?”

He also critiqued the impulse to label music as “Christian,” or not Christian.

“Creation screams God’s name. So you don’t have to stick a sign on every tree,” Bono said, suggesting that just because a song isn’t explicitly called a “Christian” song, that doesn’t mean it isn’t spiritual in nature.

“This has really, really got to stop,” he said.  “I want to hear a song about the breakdown in your marriage, I want to hear songs of justice, I want to hear rage at injustice and I want to hear a song so good that it makes people want to do something about the subject.”

The musician also shared his biggest dream for up-and-coming artists ― that they would create art for themselves and not necessarily just to please other people.

“I want to argue the case for artists or potential artists who might be listening in on our conversation and are not giving expression to what’s really going on in their lives because they feel it will give the wrong impression of them. We don’t have to please God in any other way than to be brutally honest,” Bono said. “That is the root. Not just to a relationship with God, but it’s the root to a great song. That’s the only place you can find a great song. The only place you can find any work of art, of merit.”

Vitale’s Girl Power Message at Barneys

The day after Barneys New York named Daniella Vitale its first-ever female chief executive officer, the store launched a new campaign devoted to women’s empowerment. Titled “We Will Be,” the initiative is done through the Barneys New York Foundation, the retailer’s charitable arm that was founded in 2016 as a way for the store to advocate for human rights, the arts and education. For the campaign, Barneys commissioned videos done in partnership with the High School of Fashion Industries and MAKERS, a women’s media platform, that highlight strong women. They were installed Feb. 3 in Barneys’ Madison Avenue and downtown New York windows to coincide with New York Fashion Week.
The timing could not be more apt, considering the heightened cultural focus on the protection of women’s rights under the Trump administration and the arrival of Vitale as the store’s first female ceo. The initiative was her idea.
“Back in November, with such a negative and divisive tone in the world we felt we needed to kick off the year with a message of inclusion, diversity and women’s empowerment,” Vitale said. “With a group of us sitting around talking about how women in general had been treated so poorly during the campaign

Burnt-Out Art Student Tells Off Professor With Message Hiding In Plain Sight

A college student has turned the act of telling someone off into an art form.

Lama Ali, who attends school in Virginia, had three final assignments due on the same day for her fashion drawing class. Exhausted after working on one painting for seven hours straight, the 20-year-old decided to include a message in American Sign Language to her professor:

“You got me fucked up,” a bunch of hands in the painting spell out in ASL, interwoven among the female figures.

“Honestly the idea just came to me while I was finishing up the piece,” Ali told The Huffington Post. “I was looking at it and thought, ‘This could really use something else.’ And then the idea struck me: Why not secretly express how I was feeling while struggling at the library at 4 a.m.?”

Ali, who does not know ASL, told HuffPost she taught herself a little bit just for this particular assignment.

“You know it’s bad when you have to learn a whole other language to express how done you are,” she said.

Once the fashion design major had finished her masterpiece, she posted it to Twitter on Dec. 7, where it has received over 113,000 likes and 48,000 retweets. And people really love her unbridled level of full-on pettiness.

“As petty as the idea was, I was actually really excited to make this piece,” Ali said. “Because I really felt like I was making something that showed my creativity and emotion rather than just completing the assignment.”

But, pettiness aside, most people straight up love it:

Ali said that she decided to use sign language because she wanted the message to be there, but not be immediately clear. She also wanted to practice drawing hands, so ASL seemed like a great way of marrying both those ideas.

“I remembered seeing a post on Tumblr long ago with a similar phrase in sign, and I thought the letters would look cool with the figures on the painting.”

Inspired by the post, she decided to look up the letters in ASL to spell out the message. Someone on Twitter even did the good work of circling them in the painting:

Ali told HuffPost that when she finally presented the piece to her professor in her class, he absolutely loved it.

“Most of my friends in class actually knew about the secret message, so I was really surprised when no one laughed or blew my cover during critique.”

She also admits that her professor still doesn’t know about the message, despite her post getting so much attention.

“The last time I checked, he still had no clue,” she said.

John Oliver Has A Profanity-Filled Message For Paris Attackers

John Oliver has an unequivocal message for those responsible for the terror attacks that killed more than 130 people in Paris on Friday: F**k you.

Oliver started Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight” with a few words about the deadly assaults.

“There are a few things we can say for certain,” Oliver said before telling the audience he was about to unleash a “moment of premium cable profanity.”

“First, as of now, we know this attack was carried out by gigantic fucking arseholes, unconscionable flaming arseholes; possibly working with other fucking arseholes, definitely working in service of an ideology of pure arseholery,” Oliver said. “Second, and this goes almost without saying, fuck these arseholes, fuck them — if I may say – sideways.”

Oliver also offered some words of support for the people impacted by the tragedy.

“Nothing about what these arseholes are trying to do is going to work. France is going to endure,” he said.

Watch the clip above to see Oliver explain why.

Will Smith Sends Sweetest Birthday Message To Daughter Willow

Before she was whipping her hair back and forth, Willow Smith was her father Will Smith’s little bean.

The actress and artist turns 15 this Halloween, and to show her how much he cares, Papa Will penned perhaps his most meaningful words since he and Jazzy Jeff made the “Fresh Prince” theme song. Smith took to Facebook to thank Willow for “correcting” his heart and teaching him to love “without constriction or condition”:

Happy Birthday, my Bean. 15 years old today!! When you were born it took about 2 seconds to realize that I was willing…

Posted by Will Smith on Saturday, October 31, 2015

The Smith family has been in the business of making adorable messages lately. Will also sent his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, a message that melted everyone’s heart, and Jada reciprocated with a sweet post for Will.

The Fresh Prince’s message to Willow is too much, though. Ah, so many feels! Can Will please just use his ”Men in Black” mind eraser to take away all these feels?

Reunited Punks L7’s Message To Millennials: ‘Get It Together, Step Up’

Everywhere a music fan turns these days, it feels like a band at their height in the ‘90s is reuniting — and the quality of the ensuing musical output has varied widely from inspired to “why?!”

But there have been few reunions met with as much exuberance of critics and fans alike than that of L7, the explosive all-female Los Angeles grunge-punk outfit fronted by the effervescent Donita Sparks and known for their trashing, high-energy songs like “Shitlist” and “Shove.”

it all started a couple of years back when Sparks began curating the band’s Facebook page, posting photos, fliers and other band ephemera she was in the process of digitizing. In that process, Sparks also came across many hours of videos the band had shot during their original run. She showed them to filmmaker Sarah Price and the group decided to pursue the creation of a documentary using the newly discovered footage, launching a successful $ 130,000 Kickstarter campaign to fund it.

The fan response to the Kickstarter and Facebook posts was so deafening the band, whose original lineup had last performed together in 1996, decided to give live shows another go, playing their first show in almost two decades together in LA in May. They followed that show up with a run of 11 shows in Europe and are in the midst of a mini-tour of 15 U.S. cities, playing Riot Fest in Chicago earlier this month.

The response to L7’s resurrection, especially from fans so young they weren’t alive when the band’s most recent album was released in 1999, came as a surprise to Sparks, she admitted shortly before taking the stage in Chicago’s Douglas Park. Her band is a good place, she said.

“A lot of people are like, ‘L7? Who are they? Who cares?’ And other people are like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s fucking L7!’” Sparks said. “We’re kind of in this cool, weird spot that we dig. We don’t have to be known by the masses, we just want to be known by the cool people anyway. We don’t have to convince the squares that we are a decent band.”

Decent doesn’t even come close to doing the band justice. Sparks and her bandmates — Suzi Gardner, Jennifer Finch and Demetra “Dee” Plakas — ripped through 13 songs from their catalog over the course of a taut hourlong set that felt like one of the packed weekend’s loudest and most-anticipated. One would have never guessed they were watching a band that “peaked” some 20 years earlier.

Closing with the thrilling “Fast and Frightening,” the band delivered on a request they made of the stage’s sound tent earlier in the set: to “melt off their balls and titties, in a nice way.”

As much as the shows have represented a family reunion of sorts for L7, the Riot Fest set was also a literal homecoming for half the band’s lineup, as both Plakas and Sparks were born in Chicago.

Growing up in the Chicago area, Sparks said she turned to bands like the Ramones, Blondie and the B-52s, all of whom represented a level of eccentricity and unapologetic weirdness that provided solace from her “square” suburban surroundings.

After high school, she spent a year working in downtown Chicago as a foot messenger for a photo lab to save up money to move to Los Angeles, where she launched L7 with Gardner in 1985. The hotel the band was staying at while in Chicago actually overlooked the office building where Sparks delivered artwork on foot to advertising agencies.

In Los Angeles, the band worked to develop their signature sound, a fiery blend of punk, metal and grunge elements, and were signed by Sub Pop, the label known for breaking artists like Nirvana and helping create Seattle-style grunge.

L7 didn’t quite breakthrough to the mainstream until their third album, 1992’s “Bricks Are Heavy.” They were even featured in a John Waters film, playing the part of a band called “Camel Lips” alongside Kathleen Turner in 1994’s “Serial Mom.”

They went on to influence a whole generation of women-fronted bands associated with the riot grrrl movement not only because of their music but also because of their politics. The band founded Rock for Choice, a decade-long series of feminist, pro-choice women’s rights benefit shows.

Sparks has stated in other interviews that she can see the need to revive the Rock for Choice series. Still, she admitted that she is disappointed in what she perceives as a lack of younger artists today who are embracing political activism at a time when many of the same pressing questions that prompted benefits like Rock for Choice remain unanswered today.

She is particularly concerned about environmental issues and though she said she was thrilled by the Supreme Court’s decision this year on marriage equality, she quipped, “If we’re all underwater, who cares if you’re gay [and] getting married.”

“I scratch my head and wonder why aren’t these younger bands doing benefits, I mean, are they? Are any of them organizing?” Sparks said. “We fucking built [Rock for Choice] from scratch. The Beastie Boys built the Free Tibet series from scratch. Are any young bands stepping up because I don’t know, they should be. I don’t get it. It’s needed now more than ever. Basically we’re the fucking Titanic sinking on every issue that we can think of. Millennials, get it together. Step up!”

While Sparks is happy to see more popular artists embracing the term “feminist” she added that she would like to see more action in that arena as well.

“They probably are feminists but I don’t know how much that is speaking to teenage women, I really don’t. I mean, rock and roll women,” Sparks said. “If I were a teenager I’d be looking for ways to get my aggression and frustration out. I’d really just want to scream and yell at a concert because there’s a lot of stuff to be pissed off about.”

As for L7’s future past a string of shows on the west coast in November, Sparks said there are currently “no plans” for the band to create new music and that they have been exclusively focused on the live shows and the forthcoming documentary. Beyond that, she added, “you never know.”

“We’re not being salespeople to get people to like our new album,” Sparks said. “We don’t care. We’re playing shit that’s 20 years old that people really like and they want to hear. It’s been a love fest.”

TOPLESS WOMEN CONTROVERSY: A Message to Parents visiting Times Square

If you are looking for Disneyland, then you are in the wrong state. This is New York. Times Square is a PUBLIC SPACE. And in New York City (and New York State) being topless in public is LEGAL. If businesses are upset that the law is hurting their bank accounts, then they should get the politicians to make Times Square private (which is what I presume they are trying to do). In the meantime, let’s all stop pretending that the painted women in Times Square is a violation of anything real. It is only an offense to people who come to New York City (many with kids) and want it to be an escape from reality. Well, New York City is reality, and we respect civil liberties here.

Not only is it legal to be topless in New York City, but for the sake of art, full nudity is legal in public for both men and women. I have proven this MANY times including many times in Times Square. I recently returned to New York after producing the first Amsterdam Bodypainting Day. Following a successful NYC Bodypainting Day in July (100 fully nude models in the public streets), I thought it was a good time to take the message of artistic freedom to Europe.

I was only gone for a couple of weeks and look what happened. People started freaking out about topless women! So upon my return to New York, I went back to Times Square and began painting to reaffirm that full nudity is still legal for the sake of art.

2015-08-28-1440781951-9000341-nudeinTS2fb.JPG

If the city has issue with aggressive pan handling in Times Square, then they should restrict it. But they should but restrict all of it. It’s a shame that it was only when female breasts were involved that it was decided there needed to be a change (this is prime example of gender inequality-the Naked Cowboy has been topless for decades).

Some people say that the art on the “desnudas” is not good art or not art at all or that they’re just trying to make money. Please! How many times have you seen art at a gallery or a museum, and you don’t even know what it is? If it’s a painting, it’s art. And as far as making money, that’s what everyone is trying to do. In fact, it is only because some of the richest people are in danger of making less money that we are discussing this in the first place.

Courtney Love Pens Heartbreaking Message To Late Husband Kurt Cobain

Courtney Love’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain turned 23 on Aug. 18, and the milestone seems to have stirred some emotions in the rock star.

On Aug. 19, Love shared a photo of herself with her late husband, Kurt Cobain, in bed with Frances when she was just a baby. Love captioned the photo, “My greatest love and our precious Bean #missyou #memories.”

Two days later, the 51-year-old singer shared another image from the same photo shoot and penned a heartbreaking message to Cobain, who died in 1994 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Makes me feel so sad. Our baby is all grown up now. Jesus Kurt look at her face, what on earth were you thinking..!?!? God I miss you, we all miss you #family #memories #turnbacktime #lovehim,” she wrote.

While Cobain never really seems to fade from the headlines, the late rocker was in the spotlight again earlier this year with the release of the documentary “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” which saw Frances Bean acting as executive producer and had Love’s full support.

Uniqlo Founder Tadashi Yanai Sends a Message to America

UNIQLO’S AMERICAN DREAM: Presidential candidates aren’t the only ones trying to relay more of a true-blue everyman spirit. Uniqlo founder, chairman and chief executive officer Tadashi Yanai is the latest top brass executive to pen a personal letter as an ad to customers. The black and white two-page spread in the Aug. 6 edition of last week’s New York Times was noticeably starker than the brand’s vibrant colorful campaigns in the past. Save for the red “Dear America” intro, Yanai’s words were colorless, but aimed to convey a warmth just the same. “This country is a place where, if you have something great to offer, you will be embraced. I believed that in 1984 when I opened the first Uniqlo store in Japan with the dream of one day bringing my new idea to the United States.”
Aiming to hit $ 250 million in global sales by 2020, Yanai literally spelled out a few new initiatives including the openings of stores in Boston, Chicago and Seattle. He also explained the company’s name as an abbreviation for Unique Clothing Warehouse, and noted that LifeWear is simple apparel with a not so simple purpose: To make your life better. When Mommy Message Board Abbreviations Get Out Of Hand

Parenting message boards can be a great resource, but they can also be a breeding ground for the overuse of abbreviations (aka… abbrevs).

The funny ladies of The BreakWomb show just how alienating this kind of talk can be in their latest video.

Louis C.K. Gets The Best Father’s Day Message From His TV Daughter

If any grumpy, balding, middle-aged dad is going to earn admiration from his kid, it’s going to be Louis C.K.

Hadley Delany, who plays one of the comedian’s daughters on “Louie,” had a Father’s Day message for her show-biz pop. It beats Hallmark treacle any day.

“You taught me the most important rule of all: never, ever get fat,” she says in a Made Man video posted last week.

Later in the clip, she asks, “What other dad would catch their daughter smoking pot and then take her out for burgers? That’s like an irresponsible level of cool.”

Hey, nobody said the guy was Ward Cleaver.

Check out the full video above. And a belated happy Father’s Day to all of you other stand-up dads, even if you don’t do standup.

Comedian Jim Breuer’s Father’s Day Message of Hope and Healing

“If we don’t find the funny, there’s not too many other ways of healing.”

— Jim Breuer

Jim Breuer knows funny. The comedian who was named by Comedy Central as one of the greatest standup comedians of all time has been entertaining us since his days on “Saturday Night Live” to his recent Epix special, “Jim Breuer: Comedy Frenzy.” But it was his movie “More Than Me,” a documentary of Breuer’s experience taking his elderly and sick father on his comedy tour, which was perhaps one of the pinnacles of his career.

At the end of the movie, Breuer tearfully contemplates losing his father. Breuer’s father died of cancer in August 2014, making this Breuer’s first Father’s Day without his father. And Breuer is sharing a simple but powerful message that he learned from, and with, his dad:

You don’t have to hide from life’s uncomfortable truths — sickness, death, fear — you can look them in the eye, laugh and move on.

Breuer described how his relationship with his dad changed over time. “Well, with my dad, he was a solid-rock man. For me, fearless. I’m going to assume that came from his World War II days. And really quiet. We never had big talks. They were always short conversations,” he explained. “But every pivotal move in my life, he gave the perfect man, fatherly advice. Leaving school, chasing my career, to getting married — everything. One little line here, one little line there. He was so big and powerful.”

But as time went on, Breuer’s dad became older and struggled with his health. The comedian was taken aback as his father appeared to be aware of his own waning health. “So when he started getting old, I remember being in this kitchen, and he looked a little off, and I’m like, ‘What’s the matter, Dad?’ And he goes, ‘I think I’m coming into my last days,'” he recalled. “So, why would you say that? ‘Do you feel like you’re having a heart attack or something?’ [He said] ‘No. I’m just coming into the end of my days.'”

This was a powerful lesson for Breuer. His dad was calmly and assertively facing sickness and death. And this may be the healthiest choice. Studies suggest that far from improving well-being, suppressing or avoiding one’s experience can actually worsen mental and physical health.

And it meant that Breuer himself had to face that reality. “It was so profound. He just knew. ‘I want you to know, I’m out of here soon,'” he said. “When I heard my dad say that, he was the one thing where I was like, ‘Oh, he’s going to live forever.’ Then I went, ‘Oh, my G-d, he’s leaving.’ And I didn’t know when or what.”

It was then Breuer started to see a different side of his father. Breuer describes: “[F]or the first time, I saw him vulnerable. Never saw him vulnerable,” he explained. “And I’d get him in the shower and get over that whole ‘I’ve got to get over looking at my father naked, and clean his rear end and scrub him.’ I know he’s embarrassed. He’s not going to say he’s embarrassed. But I can tell by his face he’s embarrassed. He’d be completely humiliated.”

So Breuer took the lesson from his dad and explored how to make the best of a terrible situation. The comic started by remembering how what his dad had done for him. “And then as he started deteriorating, I just remembered all the little things he’d do for me to keep me going. And they were so little. But they were huge,” he recalled. “And so when he started going down, it’s those moments when you look at what’s really important. I’m going to start lifting him up.”

And so Breuer turned to what he knew best — humor. This was a wise choice; not only because of his chosen profession, but also because of the evidence that humor can improve many aspects of functioning from mood, to immune functioning to learning.

“[W]e’re going to laugh about it. I’m going to drive him nuts. I’m going to do what I do best. I’m going to drive you nuts. … I would laugh so hard, busting his chops,” Breuer said. “And he loved George Carlin. That would be the only thing that would make him belly-laugh. It’s just something you take on. And I did everything in my power, and I think I succeeded to make that the best I could. We laughed. We’d make it a project. We’d laugh about it. It sucked at first. But then I’d overcome it.”

And it was a two-way street. “As much as I’d bust his chops, he’d bust mine in different ways. He knew I’d get mortified when I’d say certain things in public. He got off on that,” Breuer recounted. .”The laughing was always the healer.”

For Breuer, the laughing was not an attempt to avoid the truth, but rather what made it easier to embrace truth. “Sometimes, people don’t want to acknowledge the raw truth. Sometimes the truth is dark and ugly and hurts,” he explained. “And that goes with death and everything else. And sometimes it’s not pretty. Some of it’s just plain evil.”

And there’s one raw truth that Breuer found he was able to accept over time.

“Men like that don’t say ‘I love you so much.’ They say, ‘I did the oil in your car.’ That means, ‘G-d damn. I love you.'”

‘There’s $ 20 on your bed means ‘G-d damn. I love you.’ That’s their way.”

“And that’s up to you to figure out what that means.”

Four Years Wiser, My Message for This Year’s Graduates

A little over four years ago, in one of my last articles for Holy Cross’ student newspaper, The Crusader, I offered a reflection — a “graduation message”, if you will — for my fellow Crusaders, the class of 2011.

Inspired by graduation season, I recently reread it and was reminded of how much my life has changed since then. Now four years into the “real” and working world, long gone are the “all-nighters”, the month-long vacations and the clearly defined sense of purpose that studying provides.

2015-05-26-1432673655-915447-IMG_7307.jpg

What remains, however, is a lesson I had learned and shared at the near end of my college experience:

“I have come to learn and to believe that in every met expectation and unforeseen surprise, every accomplishment and failure, in every loss and gain, every victory and defeat, in every mistake and intention, and in every realized dream and unfulfilled hope, there is always a lesson — always an opportunity to learn something about yourself or about life, and always something to take away and remember for the future.

Sometimes, as I have come to learn, the lesson stares us square in the face, other times it is more obscure and requires a bit more awareness and faith. But, if anything, I have come to learn that it is always there, waiting to be discovered and acknowledged.”

I still believe this to be true. I might add, however, that it is equally important to remember that life is a continual process of growth and discovery — and that the moment we think we have “figured it all out” or learned all our lessons is typically when life will remind us, with a gentle touch or forceful push, that much remains for us to learn.

My friend and I used to joke throughout our four years at Holy Cross that “one day everything will be ok.” It became our secret six-word mantra the two of us shared, helping us to cope with the endless pressure and stress of an intense academic environment, not to mention our sometimes challenging social dilemmas.

Little did we know how mistaken we were — not in our youthful optimistic attitude, but in our naive belief that once we graduated and settled into a job, once we “made it on our own,” all would be right with the world, our fear and anxiety dissipating into eternal contentment.

In fact, it was a little over a year ago while talking on the phone that we laughed at our “six letter phrase” and agreed that while some days can feel like that “aha” moment, there will always be days that leave one feeling troubled and ill at ease.

But, it’s not that I don’t think we can ever find peace, joy or contentment. On the contrary, I think that the realization and acceptance of life as a journey — as something that we can never fully understand, master or even control — may actually be the first important step toward finding those very things.

As easy as it is for us to convince ourselves that “once I get to this point…” or “if only I could…” or “maybe if I do this…” then “everything will be ok”, it is a dangerous, crippling mentality and perpetual cycle of thought that prevents us from fully realizing that happiness is not some outside force that comes to us, but is, rather, something we must create and choose for ourselves.

Our focus, then, should not be on trying to “figure it all out.” It should be on finding ways to be more accepting of the place we are currently in — and looking for lessons that we can call upon for guidance in the future.

There are certainly days (weeks, months, maybe even years) when everything just seems right, when things have fallen into place and are running seamlessly. But, not all days are going to be like that. Nor should we expect them to. And that’s ok.

And so, four years wiser, my message to this year’s graduates is this:

You will likely face, in the coming months and years, a series of circumstances, decisions, questions and doubts that will test your confidence in yourself and those around you.

You will likely be met with challenges you may have expected, and those that you could never have anticipated – and while you will be able to successfully navigate some on your own, others will likely require the guidance and perspective of a loving parent or friend.

You will undoubtedly have moments of success and celebration, moments of failure and discouragement and maybe moments of utter despair.

You may even come to question yourself, your relationship with others and your role in the world around you.

And you will probably spend a good amount of time trying to figure out what exactly you want to do, or should do with your life.

2015-05-26-1432673769-3051927-photo70.jpg

But, instead of looking at these as obstacles — as something you have to suffer through in order to be “ok” — relish them. Accept them. Embrace them. And…learn from them. Only then can we realize and accept that we are the arbiters of our life and our contentment, and that everything can be ok right now if we allow it to be.

As the Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke — recognized as “one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets” — so eloquently wrote:

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.

Congratulations to all 2015 graduates! Live your questions.

Griner and Johnson got married Friday in front of 75 guests at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, People magazine confirmed. The 24-year-old WNBA players said “I do” after getting engaged last August.

On Sunday, the Phoenix Mercury player took to Instagram to share a photo of her and Johnson along with a sweet message.

“I don’t care if the the world was ending at this moment! Nothing could of kept me from my wife ❤️ I think I cried the whole day until I saw her walking down that [aisle]. Then in [an] instant I was calm and full of love and all the tears turned into huge smiles and a joy that no one can explain unless you have found and married your soulmate,” she wrote.

Johnson, who plays with the Tulsa Shock, also shared a photo Sunday from the wedding for Mother’s Day. In the shot, she and Griner stand with their moms at the ceremony.

Last month, Griner and Johnson were arrested after they got into a physical fight at their Phoenix home. Griner was charged with assault and disorderly conduct, and pleaded guilty to the latter. She will attend 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling and all charges will be dismissed.

“It is never OK for an argument to turn physical,” Griner said in a statement released through her attorney to USA Today. “This will never happen again, and I take my relationship and my responsibility as a role model seriously. I am committed to making positive changes and I plan to use what I have learned to set a good example and help make a difference in the world around me.”

The Modern-Day Message We Can All Take Away From ‘Selma’ (VIDEO)

In 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led thousands of nonviolent crusaders on a 54-mile march from Selma, Ala., to the state capitol in Montgomery to draw attention to the equal voting rights campaign. It was a mighty journey, met with hatred and attacks ranging from police beatings to tear gas, but still they marched — and the nation took notice, with President Lyndon B. Johnson signing into law the Voting Rights Act later that same year.

Today, half a century later, modern-day marches are making headlines and history of their own, including the protests in Ferguson, Mo., in the wake of Michael Brown’s shooting by a police officer. The cast of “Selma” has spoken out about the timeliness of the film given these tragedies and events — star David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay address that here — and they also insist on the importance of continuing the conversation about civil rights.

“This has happened a couple of times to me: People say, ‘Why do we need another civil rights film?'” Oprah, the film’s co-producer and one of its actresses, says in the above video. “I go, ‘When have you seen one?’… There hasn’t been one.”

Her “Selma” colleagues agree. Not only is the history itself important, but DuVernay also believes that these past events contain powerful lessons that remain relevant today, in Ferguson and across the country. “Selma” doesn’t open nationwide until January 9, but the film was screened in Ferguson prior to its release with this very clear intention in mind.

“We showed it to a group of just 50 activists there,” DuVernay says. “It was really to serve the people on the ground. Just to really offer the tactics that were used historically.”

But something monumental happened 10 minutes before the film was over.

“The Eric Garner ‘indecision’ came through,” DuVernay says, referencing a grand jury’s decision not to indict a New York City police officer in Garner’s choking death.

As the grand jury decision was handed down, the Ferguson audience began to react. “It was… very emotional,” DuVernay says. “It was an emotional moment for them, just trying to figure out how to move forward. How do we continue to make sure our voices are heard? How do we work for systemic change?”

She praises the activists that have been doing good work in the community, but adds that it’s crucial to continue the work and the conversations long after the media spotlight fades. “One of the things that ‘Selma’ shows is the strategy, the long-tail action that goes into these protests,” she explains. “They’re not to be dismissed because they’re not on TV anymore.”

The brave men and women of 1965 knew this, Oprah says, and truly understood the power of remaining peaceful, despite the intensity of their emotions or outrage.

“King, C.T. Vivian, John Lewis, Andrew Young — they understood from the beginning that you’re more powerful with your hands up, non-resisting, than you are throwing a Molotov cocktail,” Oprah says.

Chuck Hagel Includes Gay Sailor’s Proposal In Holiday Message

Well, this is a lovely statement of solidarity for the holidays.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and his wife Lilibet released a holiday message to men and women of the Defense Department last week that included an image of MM2 2nd Class Jerrel Revels’ proposal to his boyfriend Dylan Kirchner.

This viral gay marriage proposal happened in 2013, just two short years after the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

A gay military couple has reportedly never before been included in the Defense Secretary’s holiday message for the troops.

ORG Tom Swift stepped from the door of the machine shop, where he was at work making some adjustments to the motor of his airship, and glanced down the road. He saw a cloud of dust, which effectually concealed what-ever was causing it. “Some one must be in a hurry this morning,” the lad remarked, “Looks like a motor speeding along. MY! but we certainly do need rain,” he added, as he looked up toward the sky. “It’s very dusty. Well, I may as well get back to work. I’ll take the airship out for a flight this afternoon, if the wind dies down a bit.

Getting the Message

Just outside London, at the Verity Lang Academy for the Performing Arts, (a famous boarding school that attracts talented students from all over the world) are six teenage friends from diverse backgrounds who form up-and-coming band Lucky Six. There’s confident English lead singer/songwriter, Laurie Hawker, her computer-whiz younger brother and bass guitarist Jack, Japanese Aimi Akita who’s the band’s lead guitarist (and general limelight-stealer), hard-working American student Marybeth Fellows on keyboard, dopey but lovable American Noah Hansen on drums and sharp-witted French student, backing singer and band manager Elle Beaumont. After solving their first case, Lucky Six get a taste for sleuthing and put their teamwork skills to the test time and time again as they solve a range of exciting mysteries. Getting the Message: Someone’s trying to sabotage Lucky Six’s big performance at the summer showcase. An anonymous messenger on their web site warns them of a ‘shock on stage’. But are they friend or foe? The gang has no choice but to find out.

“God’s Not Dead” Keeps Its Message Alive

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“God’s Not Dead” (Pure Flix)

“God’s Not Dead” is the latest entry in the Christian/family entertainment market. Directed by Harold Cronk, the movie sends a strong Christian message while being entertaining at the same time. The cast is largely full of lesser known actors with the exception of Kevin Sorbo and Willie Robertson, but all involved play their roles with competence.

The plot involves a college freshman named Josh (Shane Harper) who signs up for a Philosophy class taught by Professor Radisson (Sorbo). On the first day of class Radisson, an atheist, asks the class to sign a statement that “God is dead” so they can skip over that philosophical argument. It must be unanimous by all class members. Josh refuses to sign the statement so Radisson tells him he can have twenty minutes or so in each class session in order to sway the class members to his side. Then there will be a vote by the class as to which side is right.

The challenge is taken though Josh’s parents and his girlfriend (Cassidy Gifford) ask him to just let it go. He researches his belief and does a magnificent job of going head to heads with the professor. Of course this stunning ability to debate such a complex issue strains credibility, but in this movie anything is possible.

There are side issues in this movie involving a young woman facing cancer, another woman trying to convince her atheist boyfriend to accept her Christian beliefs, a third woman going against her parents in order to pronounce her faith. There are a lot of challenges in being a Christian and this movie projects a variety of them.

Sorbo is effective as the atheist professor and Harper is strong as the dedicated Christian student. Willie Robertson of “Duck Dynasty: fame appears as himself in order to make a statement about his beliefs. There is also a solid performance from Tricia LaFache as the young woman with cancer. The musical group Newsboys appear as themselves at the end of the film to present some uplifting songs.

The movie is rated PG for adult themes.

“God’s Not Dead” is not a movie that will appeal to everyone. It is definitely aimed at Christian believers. Still the dramatic context of the script and the talent of the cast could make it entertaining for anyone. It is a bit overdone in the presentation of its message but not as extreme as it could have been.

I scored “God’s Not Dead” a living 6 out of 10.
