Mike Amiri Details Retail Strategy

Mike Amiri’s Los Angeles-based line is only four and a half years old, but he already considers brands such as Prada and Gucci his peers. And because of this, he thought it was important to debut his fall 2018 collection, which he calls his most comprehensive, fully realized effort so far, in Paris instead of the U.S.
“I believe there is new space for independent brands in the context of luxury to have a voice,” Amiri said. “Before there were so many different walls. But playing on that stage is important and it shows the collection in the context of brands who I consider peers. We only sell to shops where we are adjacent to these brands.”
Amiri was speaking on the phone from Tokyo where he’s recently opened a pop-up within Restir, an independent boutique, that will sell his fall 2018 collection along with a capsule that he created in collaboration with Warner Bros., which is inspired by the Eighties movie the “The Lost Boys.”
“Restir is one of the few accounts we sell to in Japan and I like that it’s an independent shop that’s off the beaten path,” Amiri said. “I thought it was time to have more of a presence

Mike Ashley to Turn House of Fraser into ‘Harrods of the High Street’

AIMING HIGH: Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley, who purchased House of Fraser for 90 million pounds last Friday morning, revealed in an exclusive post-purchase interview with British tabloid The Sun, that he wanted transform the retailer into “the Harrods of the high street.”
He said his plans are to stock luxury labels such as Gucci and Prada. According to Ashley they are “the biggest thing missing” in the department store today and that stocking those brands “will make a big difference.”
Not surprisingly, industry observers were skeptical.
George Wallace, chief executive of MHE Retail, said in an interview he thinks it will be very difficult for House of Fraser to attract luxury brands.
“The level investment that’s required in those stores to get to a standard where the likes of Gucci and Prada would be prepared to be present is really a massive amount, bearing in mind the size of the stores. Selfridges and Harrods have poured in hundreds of millions of pounds to create an environment supportive of a luxury product.”
He added: “The concept of big department stores in mid-size towns is under serious threat and past its use-by date. Having a luxury department store in a provincial city is not commercially viable.”

Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino Loves the ‘Sweet Spot’ of Wedding Planning: ‘Most Guys’ Don’t Get It

Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is having a blast planning his upcoming nuptials to fiancée Lauren Pesce.

“We are in the sweet spot right now and having fun planning the wedding,” the Jersey Shore Family Vacation star tells PEOPLE at the Lunch with the Jersey Shore event at Little Dom’s restaurant in Los Angeles on Friday.

While Sorrentino, 35, admits that he’s been leaving most of the big decisions up to his bride-to-be, he says he’s really enjoyed checking out different venues — and tasting all those wedding cakes!

“I don’t think most guys realize how much goes into planning a wedding. I told her, ‘Babe, just do whatever you want to do,’ ” he adds.

Sorrentino and Pesce, 33, who got engaged on Valentine’s Day, met in 2004 in college and dated for about four years, splitting before the original run of Jersey Shore premiered in 2009. After the MTV series wrapped in 2012, they rekindled the romance and have been together for over four years.

While Pesce previously told PEOPLE the couple didn’t “have a date” picked out yet, she revealed the couple’s “dream was always to go to the motherland and get married in Italy.”

Sorrentino, who is also celebrating 30 months of sobriety, went on to tell PEOPLE that his time with his Jersey Shore castmates was vastly different this time around.

“I was able to make good decisions, stay faithful to my girlfriend back home and stay positive,” he remarks. “I was definitely a little worried about going to the clubs with these guys who can drink and being back in that environment, but I was able to do it.”

Sorrentino, who has battled with a prescription painkiller addiction in the past, previously told PEOPLE that he credits his fiancée with helping him turn his life around.

“What I dreamed of, the expectations I had set for him, him getting healthy and sober — I didn’t know that our relationship would survive had those miracles not happened, and they did,” Pesce said. “He put in the hard work and thanks to the faith in God that we have, we’re in the position we’re in today.”

“She’s definitely my better half and the reason why I strive to be the best version of myself and to fight for our future,” Sorrentino added. “And to show a good example to her, her family and everyone watching — because my life has been under a microscope. I have a lot to prove.”

And as Sorrentino awaits his June 20 sentencing after pleading guilty to tax evasion in a New Jersey federal court in January, he’s maintaining a positive outlook and is hoping for the best — even though he’s facing up to five years in prison.

“I’ve done everything in my power to better myself,” he told PEOPLE prior to the season premiere of Jersey Shore Family Vacation. “I really feel that I’m in the best situation possible.”

“We should receive some closure,” he added. “And I’ll try to move forward with my life.”

Story Time with Daddy: Carrie Underwood Shares Video of Husband Mike Fisher Reading to Their Son

It doesn’t get any cuter than story time with daddy!

On Saturday, Carrie Underwood shared a sweet video of husband Mike Fisher reading aloud to their 2½-year-old son Isaiah Michael from a colorful, biblical storybook.

And as Isaiah learned all about Noah and his arc, he also showed that he’s pretty knowledgable about animals as he correctly identified all of the species in the picture book.

“Story time with Daddy…Learning about Noah…and my heart melts❤❤❤ ,” Underwood captioned the precious moment.

Underwood recently broke her wrist after falling on the steps outside her home just a few days after hosting the CMA Awards in November — and in January, she revealed that the incident also caused severe cuts to her face.

In a post to her fan club members, the country singer said that in addition to having surgery on her wrist, she required “40 and 50 stitches” to her face.

“There is also another part of the story that I haven’t been ready to talk about since I have still been living it and there has been much uncertainty as to how things will end up,” she wrote in the note obtained by PEOPLE. “It’s crazy how a freak random accident can change your life.”

For more coverage, follow our babies magazine on Flipboard.

She continued: “In addition to breaking my wrist, I somehow managed to injure my face as well. I’ll spare you the gruesome details, but when I came out of surgery the night of my fall, the doctor told Mike that he had put between 40 and 50 stitches in.”

While she’s still on the road to recovery, seven weeks after the accident she revealed she’s still “not quite looking the same,” and still has yet to share a clear photo of her face (though a fan-shared image made the rounds on the internet since).

“I honestly don’t know how things are going to end up but I do know this: I am grateful,” she wrote. “I am grateful that it wasn’t much, much worse. And I am grateful for the people in my life that have been there every step of the way.”

Being that she didn’t finish off the year quite as planned, the country superstar is ready to make 2018 one for the books.

“I am determined to make 2018 amazing and I want to share things with you along the way,” she concluded. “And when I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you all to understand why I might look a bit different.”

Cockpit USA Collaborates With Stylist Mike B.

Mike B., whose real name is Mike Barnett, has teamed with Cockpit USA, the heritage outerwear brand.
For Barnett, a celebrity stylist whose client list includes A$ AP Ferg, Sean Combs, the Migos and Swizz Beatz, this partnership is a full-circle moment.
He met Jacky Clyman, the owner of Cockpit USA, in the Nineties via fax and e-mail while working on The Bad Boy Entertainment leather jackets that Avirex, which was once owned by Cockpit USA, produced. They met again in New York and Barnett pitched his brand concept to Clyman, who obliged.
“During the Nineties, Avirex and Cockpit helped hip-hop culture in terms of outerwear. If you follow hip-hop, there are different eras of leather jackets. In the late 2000s, it was all about having a good Avirex or Cockpit bomber.”
Barnett has worked with the Cockpit design team to create a collection of outerwear, which includes a G1 Top Gun bomber with a removable collar, a shearling coat and a longer shearling style with a belt. The coats, which retail from $ 900 to $ 2,100, are all black with Cockpit’s signature map lining. The capsule is available now on Cockpit’s e-commerce site and Mike B.’s site.

Mike Huckabee Says ‘SNL’ Impression Of His Daughter Was ‘Sexist’

Aidy Bryant debuted her impression of White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders this past weekend on “Saturday Night Live” and ―big shocker ― not everyone is happy about it.

“For those of you who don’t know me yet, my father is Mike Huckabee and my mother is a big southern hamburger,” Bryant-as-Sanders told the press pool in a deep southern drawl during the skit.

While the the skit was fairly complimentary toward Sanders, dubbing her “articulate and charming” and an improvement over Sean Spicer, it seems her father, former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, was not amused

“I thought it was a little bit silly, sexist, [and] misogynist, but my daughter is certainly capable of handling a whole lot worse than that,” Huckabee said on the Fox Business Network’s “Varney & Co” on Tuesday.

Other commentators claimed the skit fat-shamed the deputy press secretary.

“You guys were mean about Huckabee Sanders,” CNN’s Chris Cuomo said on Monday. “You were fat-shaming her. You were talking about how she looks and what she wears. I thought that it was mean, not funny.”

He added, “They had her eating. I thought it was in poor taste.”

Cuomo is referring to the show’s decision to have Bryant eating an apple when she reappears at the podium after being kicked off the stage by Melissa McCarthy’s Sean Spicer.

The apple was no doubt a strange choice, but it’s hard to argue with the fact that casting Bryant as Huckabee Sanders is pretty spot-on. And if there’s any fat-shaming going on, it was coming from Cuomo, who probably owes Bryant an apology.

As for joking about how Sanders looks and what she wears, that’s likely a reference to the Weekend Update segment on Saturday’s episode, in which host Colin Jost took a swing at her.

“Spicer’s thirsty understudy Sarah Huckabee Sanders said James Comey had committed basic atrocities while he was head of the FBI, like reopening the Hillary Clinton investigation,” said Jost. “But that’s not a basic atrocity. A basic atrocities is when you post a brunch photo that says, ‘Pizza is life.’ Or when your profile pic is you on an inflatable swan. Basic Atrocities, by the way, is also where Sarah Huckabee Sanders gets her wardrobe.”

Yes, this is horribly sexist, regardless of the fact that Sean Spicer’s terrible sense of style is routinely dissected in the news. Horribly sexist.

Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino Says His College Sweetheart Lauren Pesce Has Stayed with Him Through His Darkest Times

Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino has seen a lot of change in his life since he found fame as a breakout star of MTV’s Jersey Shore, yet through most of those times, his constant has been college sweetheart Lauren Pesce.

While opening up exclusively in this week’s PEOPLE about his escalating legal woes and recent relapse with painkillers, Sorrentino revealed how he’s leaned on Pesce in the last several years — and what he hopes for their future.

The pair met and dated for nearly four years while they were in college but took a break as Sorrentino rose to household name status on Jersey Shore.

They rekindled their relationship after the show and it was Pesce, who’d seen Sorrentino grapple with prescription pill abuse leading up to a 60-day stint in rehab in 2012, who most recently tried to help him avoid falling into another addiction spiral.

They were driving to the hospital after he cracked his ribs at the gym in June 2015, Sorrentino recalls, and Pesce “was pleading, ‘You know  are not good for you — whether they’re doctor prescribed or not. You’ve been down this road before.’ ” But, he says, “I really had the excuse at the time, you know, that it was under doctor’s orders.”

And while Sorrentino acknowledges that his struggle with addiction has taken a toll on his relationship, Pesce has continued to stand by his side — even finding herself in the reality TV spotlight at points. The pair took their issues publicon Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars just before his relapse in 2015 and, according to Sorrentino, “It really helped us out and it still helps us out to this day.”

He continues, “You sort of learn how other people communicate and they’re coming from a different perception or a different view, and you have to value that view and listen to respond.” And that experience inspired Sorrentino to enlist his older brothers Marc, 36, and Frank Jr., 40, to join him on Boot Camp‘s Family Edition.

For more about Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino’s journey to overcoming addiction and how longtime love Lauren Pesce has stood by him through years of legal battles, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now

As for what’s next, Sorrentino — who was once notorious for his hard partying — is happy to “Netflix and chill” with Pesce most nights (they even watch old episodes of Jersey Shore some days).

And after finding fame, traveling the world and finding his partner, Sorrentino says, “I’ve definitely attained a lot of the goals that I’ve set out for myself. Now one of the most important ones is having a family and kids.”

Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars — Family Edition premieres Friday at 9 p.m. ET on WE tv.

So, Chris Christie Might End Up Replacing Mike Francesa

Chris Christie, once thought to be a potential Republican candidate for U.S. president, is now in the running for a job of a very different variety: Mike Francesa’s.

NorthJersey.com reported Wednesday that WFAN 660-AM’s program director, Mark Chernoff, would be interested in hiring the New Jersey governor as the replacement for legendary afternoon radio host Mike Francesa, should Francesa actually decide to retire at the end of 2017.

I would certainly at least want to consider him,” Chernoff told the outlet. “If he’s interested and we’re interested, it’s worth pursuing.”

WFAN, which predominately covers sports in the tri-state, famously became the first radio station to dedicate itself entirely to sports 24 hours a day in 1987.

Christie would be just one among “plenty of [other] candidates,” cautioned Chernoff, who is also vice president of WFAN’s parent company, CBS Radio New York.

Christie is set to end his time as governor of New Jersey less than a month after Francesa is expected to retire. Speculation about Christie’s interest in Francesa’s gig has only grown increasingly louder since he called in to the host’s show in January to discuss his next opportunities, saying he’d “have wide-open ears.”

Last week, Christie told the SNY cable network that his son told him it would be “great” if someone paid him to talk about sports, since the son had been listening to his father talk about them for his “entire life.”

“So, yeah, that’s certainly one of the things that I hope I’ll have a chance to consider when I get out and stop being governor,” he added.

Even if Christie is interested in the job, people on the internet expressed shock that the governor, who this time last year was just weeks removed from running for president of the United States, would take on such a gig.

Some noted the irony of him potentially moving into the entertainment business as President Donald Trump gets used to life in government. But with the whole scandal surrounding the bridge lane closings in his home state, I mean, what did you really expect?

By the way, Chris Christie is a Dallas Cowboys fan

Bono Praises Mike Pence’s Defense of AIDS Bill During Friendly Meeting in Germany

After an address at the Munich Security Conference in Germany on Saturday in which he vowed that the Unite States will “hold Russia accountable,” Vice President Mike Pence had a brief visit with U2 frontman and activist Bono.

The two men discussed the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) — a government initiative to provide treatment, testing, education, and counseling to those suffering with HIV/AIDS in Africa (among other places).

It was first signed in 2003 under President George W. Bush and later renewed in 2008 under President Barack Obama. As an Indiana congressman at the time, Vice President Pence was an advocate for PEPFAR’s passing.

“Twice on the House floor you defended that,” Bono told Pence. “That’s how we know you.”

“It was an extraordinary historic accomplishment and you played a leading role in carrying it forward,” Pence responded.

The rockstar has been raising awareness about the global HIV/AIDS epidemic for nearly two decades now — co-forming Product Red, which partners with big brands (Nike, Gap, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Beats by Dre, etc.) to help raise money for charities fighting the disease.

He also co-founded the ONE Campaign which aims to eradicate poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa by raising awareness and encouraging Americans to contact senators/elected officials and voice their opinions.

While Pence did advocate for PEPFAR’s passing, some critics have claimed that he enabled an HIV outbreak in Indiana when he was serving as governor. The critics claim that Pence’s defunding of Planned Parenthood, which was one of the few places in some parts of Indiana that offered HIV testing, as well as his alleged dithering on pushing forward a needle exchange bill to fight passing infections, led to a rise in HIV patients in Scott County. He eventually approved a bill for needle exchanges which led to a reduction in the number of HIV cases.

RELATED VIDEO: Watch: Natasha Stoynoff Breaks Silence, Accuses Donald Trump of Sexual Attack

“I appreciate the chance to get together for you for a minute,” Pence told Bono. “I heard you were in town.”

“You’re the second busiest man on earth,” Bono joked.

Afterwards, the Pence tweeted about the meeting. “Enjoyed chatting w/ Bono at @MunSecConf,” he wrote. “Discussed prior effort to twice pass Africa AIDS assistance & future security in developing nations.”

The Munich Security Conference marks Pence’s first trip overseas as vice president.

Annette Bening: Honored at New York Stage & Film Gala/ Mother Writ-Large in Mike Mills’ Twentieth Century Women

“If I were a woman,” Rob Reiner said in a video of congratulatory messages for Annette Bening at the Plaza Hotel where this sublime actress was feted at the New York Stage & Film Gala, “I’d be jealous.” Even those of us attending, with so many who worked with her or want to work with her, including Billy Crudup, John Patrick Shanley, Peter Gallagher, Julianne Marguiles, Jennifer Westfeldt, Greta Gerwig, a who’s who of stage, television, and screen including her co-honoree David Rockwell, admired Bening’s stellar career on stage and in movies– some favorites include American Beauty, The Grifters, and The Kids are All Right. Next up she is Irina in Chekhov’s The Seagull. With her husband Warren Beatty who was also present, she is Hollywood royalty.

But to hear her speak, she’s all about the work, and incredibly grounded. The next day at Bistro Milano, Bening joined Greta Gerwig and Mike Mills, her director in the new movie Twentieth Century Women, for a panel discussion. As was his wont in Beginners, a movie hewing close to the life of Mills’ father, this movie features a whimsical mother figure casually limning the life of his, Dorothea Fields, in California in the ’70’s, played so well by Annette Bening, she is sure to be nominated for this year’s Best Actress Oscar. Mills said he learned from the poet Allen Ginsberg about creating drama inspired by his life. Twentieth Century Women is not too far from everyone’s sense of the 1970’s, the artifacts especially. Annette Bening recounted her saying to Mike Mills, as they were making the film, you want to see that macramé bag. I have that macramé bag, and sure enough, she unearthed it.

FOR A CAUSE: It’s not every day that pro athletes share the runway with TV personalities, philanthropists, socialites and even kids, but that was the case at the 89th annual Woman’s Board of Rush University Fashion Show last Thursday at Morgan Manufacturing in Chicago’s West Loop. “We start prepping in January, and start shooting in March,” he said during an interview with The Huffington Post. “Eddie Murphy’s playing my father, Oprah Winfrey’s playing my grandmother, Kate Hudson’s playing my girl, and I’m playing Richard Pryor.”

Epps went on to share how preparing for the role of Pryor, who died in 2005, has required him to delve into the many layers of the late comedy legend.

“Right now, I’m just really soaking it up. I’m just a sponge right now,” he said. “Just doing a lot research on the history of Richard Pryor. Trying to figure out the things that I need to figure out to play certain scenes. How I need to feel. What state of mind I need to be in, because this guy was a roller coaster, man. It wasn’t easy. [He was] close to something that’s scientific — broken down into a whole lot of different ways.”

As the 44-year-old actor gears up for the iconic role, he is also busy promoting season 2 of Starz’s original series, “Survivor’s Remorse.” The comedy series, which is produced by NBA superstar LeBron James and follows the life of a young professional basketball star, Cam Calloway (played by Jessie T. Usher), as he navigates his newfound fame, wealth, and personal relationships.

While the show addresses relevant topics surrounding the lives of professional athletes, Epps — who plays Calloway’s uncle, Julius — says the show isn’t just relatable to people in the world of sports.

“The whole show itself is relatable to anybody that’s in show business because it’s ‘survivor’s remorse,’” he said. “So the whole thing about money, family, and friends, and love and all that — it all ties in together.”

“Survivor’s Remorse” premieres Saturday August 22 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT

Powerful Women And Female Pleasure: Exploring The Feminist Themes Of ‘Magic Mike XXL’

Female viewers flocked to the theaters to watch “Magic Mike XXL” when the flick hit the big screen last week. And many of its fans have praised the film for its feminism.

The sequel, which follows Channing Tatum and his band of male entertainers as they make their way to their final performance at a stripper convention, has been applauded for its progressive depiction of women of various ages, body types and races, its  powerful female characters and its positive embrace of female sexuality. As the Washington Post’s Soraya Nadia McDonald noted, “Magic Mike XXL” even passed the Bechdel test.

As entertainment writer for Cosmopolitan.com Patti Greco told HuffPost Live, the film’s writers may have intended to make buddy comedy, but the end result was completely different.

“Ultimately, what came out of it was a movie that centered on the idea that women’s pleasure really mattered very much,” Greco told host Caroline Modaressy-Tehrani. “[There were] a bunch of great female characters who actually helped write their parts. Jada Pinkett-Smith, [who was] a revelation in this and arguably was the most empowering and feminist part of the movie, really brought that role to the table, same with Andie MacDowell.”

Greco also applauded the character development of the film’s male stars and responded to the critique that “Magic Mike XXL” objectifies men and promotes unrealistic body standards.

“If these guys were just chiseled lunks, nobody would be that attracted to them. They actually have personality,” she said. “They actually have sensitivity and so they are feminine in some ways and it plays with the idea that you can’t just be a hunk of meat. You also have to be sensitive to satisfy a woman.”

Still the movie had its flaws, Deadspin senior culture editor Puja Patel noted.

“There are times where the film is clearly pandering a little bit,” she said. “These women kind of become a prop to tell the males character development or the story that these men are healers in some way.”

INTERVIEW: Dana Nachman, Patricia Wilson and Mike Jutan on Batkid Begins

In 2013, the family of a little boy named Miles, suffering from cancer, made a request to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. He wanted to be Batman. From that simple hope of a sick child, an entire social movement was born: Batkid had begun. With the entire city of San Francisco heeding young Miles’s call, an army of volunteers, well-wishers and Batman fans mobilized to turn his wish into a reality, in the process, making for a social media moment unlike any other.

This amazing experience has now been documented in director Dana Nachman’s Batkid Begins, which presents a heartwarming portrait of one city’s efforts to make one very special day for one very special little hero. I recently had the chance to talk to Nachman, as well as Make-a-Wish Foundation’s Patricia Wilson, who orchestrated the entire event, and Mike Jutan, who portrayed Batman baddie the Penguin during the event. Here are some highlights from our conversation.

Patricia, I think a little bit of background would be helpful here. How do we end up at turning San Francisco into Gotham City from the wish request that you got?

Patricia: So, we work with children’s medical hospitals in the area, and our referrals come that way, and Miles was referred through his hospital in the course of treatment. And then we work with 550 volunteers just here in Northern California, and two people went out to his home and interviewed him to see what his one true wish was. And in the case of the interview, they came out and said, “Wow, he wants to be the real Batman.”

So, that kind of began the wish process, and then I had to figure out what the real Batman was to this five-year-old, and think about how we would go about doing a very whimsical wish. And we’ve done public wishes and group wishes before. I had a child who wanted to be a famous singer. I had a child who wanted to be a San Jose Shark this past year. So, there are a variety of wishes that we’ve done, but this one took off in a way that I still don’t quite…I’m trying to — it took the documentary, I think, for me to really get what happened that day.

Well, what do you attribute that to? Because Make-A-Wish, the work that you guys do is very well known, and yet, certainly, I’ve never seen this global reach we saw.

Patricia: The vast majority of wishes we do are very private and intimate and beautiful just for themselves, and it wouldn’t be appropriate to have public involvement. This was one of the rare wishes we do that I call a public wish. And I just think because it was childlike and whimsical, because it was San Francisco, I think there was a certain amount of fatigue from bad news, and people were ready for a good news story. I think some of that is just the planets are aligned, and it was kind of the perfect storm, that this was just a sweet story. And we weren’t — it wasn’t a fundraising campaign. We just asked people to come and hold up signs and make him feel like a superhero.

And Dana, at what point did the idea of turning this into a documentary kick in?

Dana: About the day after the event. I missed the whole thing. I was not one of the two billion people who followed it online. I was out of state in a cave somewhere where I was not on social media or watching on the news that week. I was editing something else, and I was really immersed in what I was doing. So, after it happened, I thought, god, that would’ve been a great documentary. I wish I could’ve done it.

And then kind of forgot about it, and then a week later, my friend, who I used to job share with at NBC, called. I said, what are you working on? She’s like, “I’m trying to get an interview with the Batkid.” And I said, that would’ve been great. She’s like, “Well, when I hang up, I’m going to call the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Do you want me to ask if they’ll meet with us about a documentary?” I said, yeah, why not?

So, next day, we’re in the Make-A-Wish office and then Patricia walks in. We talked for about two and a half hours, I think it was, and basically, the thing that really struck me was when I asked: what did you intend to happen? And she said, “We wanted 200 people to show up.” And then, obviously, I know that 25,000 people showed up and two billion people followed it online, and so, because of that — what the intention was and what actually happened — that’s why I wanted to really get involved in telling the story.

Watching the documentary, so much of the footage is in the moment. I just assumed they were there.

Dana: Right. When people say that, I’m so happy because we didn’t indicate my lack of total…the zeitgeist that I missed.

Patricia: And it’s true. I couldn’t have coped. Honestly, we…there was no way.

Mike: Our goal was for the wish to be successful, the day of. We weren’t trying to process it. Everyone’s like, “How did it feel?” It’s like, well, we weren’t thinking about what we were doing. We were just trying to stay alive, as Patricia says.

Dana: But to your point, they had hired a videographer to shoot it for a fundraising video for after the fact. So, that’s how we got lucky with that. We also got — Comcast SportsNet, a local station, gave us their footage, and then a few other sources. And then a big source, which I think was some of the best footage, was from the Scotts, who shot home video, and then we went back. So, the first half of the film, we went back and kind of recreated, even though it doesn’t seem like it’s recreated, but we did.

Mike, you alluded to this idea that you were just kind of in it. At what point did it cross your mind that, hey, this is way bigger than I had planned?

Mike: Actually, the infamous tweet day, apparently, when I sent out this tweet of E.J., Eric Johnston, who played Batman, with his cape flapping – one of the things that started the ball rolling in terms of our Internet explosion over there. That was the day we were touring AT&T Park for the first time, and Patricia’s like, “And here’s where the news helicopter’s going to be.” News helicopter? “Here’s where the fireboats are going to be.” We have fireboats?

So, when I was asked to…when E.J. and Sue — Sue played the damsel — came to my apartment, it was in August or September, and they’d said, “What are you doing November 15th? Just say yes.” And I hadn’t even looked at my phone. I was about to look through it, and I was like, yes! Because it’s them; whatever they’re doing is going to be epic. They said, “We want you to get dressed up as a bad guy, and get chased around by a five-year-old for charity.” I was like, sounds like a perfect use of my time, quite literally.

I didn’t even know it was a work day. It’s all good. Everyone at work is very supportive, which is great. So, I agreed to it when I didn’t even know what it was, let alone what I was agreeing to, and he said, “Don’t worry. It’s just a small thing.” And so, getting about two or three weeks out, it was very clear it was going to be huge, and I started having this sense of: one, I don’t want to screw it up, and two, how do we now represent a much larger thing now that it’s become so big.

People are coming with expectations, and it was the night before, when I was having a mild meltdown, and my girlfriend said, “The only thing that matters is Miles. All these people are coming, every news agency ever is coming. There’s five helicopters. The only thing that matters is fulfilling Miles’s wish. That’s the goal. That’s always been the goal.

If there were 50 people there, you would do exactly the same thing.” And so, that was a really great grounding moment of why we were doing it, who it was really for. Then, sort of delaying those feelings, then two or three weeks later, starting to think, what did we do? What did we, as a city, just say to the entire world, literally? And so, it was just really amazing when Dana came on and helped spread the larger message that we sort of unintentionally sent.

Do you think this could have happened the same way in any other city?

Patricia: Absolutely not.

Why not?

Patricia: I just don’t think there’s a city that has as much compassion and come together. We had a mayor who is amazing. We had a police chief who’s supported Make-A-Wish since the beginning of time. These are just great, caring, compassionate people, and not to say that other mayors aren’t, but I think that they are so loved by the rank and file. It was so interesting. Greg Suhr has been with the force 33 years, right?

The rank and file actually told him, “We’ll come in for free. We’re volunteering.” Where else does that happen? I think the level of volunteerism and spirit that happens in this city, it can happen nowhere else. And we’ve had a fair amount of folks from New York saying, “It would never happen here.” So, I think it speaks very highly of San Francisco, whether you’ve left your heart here or whether you think of yourself as a San Franciscan because it was a beautiful, beautiful thing.

Also, one thing that…when Mike and I first met — I first met with Make-A-Wish, and then the second person I met with was Mike, and one thing that we talked a lot about, and Mike kind of alerted me to, was the concept that he learned at — it was Pixar, right?

Mike: At Pixar, yeah, Ed Catmull. As an intern there, we amazingly got to participate in these speaker series, and we got to have lunch with Ed Catmull, the president and co-founder of Pixar and current president of Disney Animation. It’s amazing to be in a room with him because this guy founded computer graphics, founded Pixar. It’s like, oh, my god. He was at Pixar when Pixar was still a pet project of Lucasfilm.

And that is very striking to me, that in the first — maybe it was the first week of our job, I think — he said, “I want to tell you about the spirit of this company.” He said, “This is a ‘yes and’ company; this is not a ‘no, but’ company, and everyone is here, everyone is top of their game, and it’s your job here to construct things on top of what everybody else is doing, construct things together. And if someone has an idea, take what they’re doing and run with it, and build it into something. If you have a totally different idea, add it into the mix as opposed to diverting it in a different direction.” And I feel like the whole city did that here.

It’s a “yes and” city.

Patricia: Exactly.

Mike: All the companies, all the people, all the city staff, all the volunteers, all the just…all the people of San Francisco said: yes, I don’t want to go to work, and I’m coming dressed up.

Dana: Yeah, and when Mike just told me about this “yes and,” for the rest of the time until we came up with “Batkid Begins,” that was like, the working title. It was never going to be the real title, but that was the spirit in which the film was made because that was the spirit in which San Francisco worked. So, to me, the whole time, it was called “Yes…And.”

And I had a scene at some points that was called “Yes…And,” and I just think that kind of dovetailed into your question about San Francisco, I think because all those people were trained in the way that Mike was describing, to make Twitter, to make Facebook, to make these companies that changed the way we live. And so, that’s the spirit in which San Francisco lives, and so I think…of course, it could happen in other cities, but they’d have to start…

Mike: This place is angry about the status quo. It’s like if something is going a certain — Hans Zimmer talks about that in the movie. He says, “It’s like you’re tired with how the world runs, and you want it to run better,” and I feel like the entire spirit of this area is built that way. It’s what literally yanked me here from Canada. My sights were always set on San Francisco as an area to live in, and there’s a magnet here. It’s because there’s those kind of people.

Dana: And that was the words that people used when we interviewed them, who flew in. They said, “There was a magnet pulling me.” I think three people said that in interviews, “There was a magnet pulling me.”

Patricia: Plus, there’s no “no” in Make-A-Wish. I mean, come on. There’s a child who was diagnosed at 18 months, and if you think about that, to think that from 18 — he’s a baby and has cancer. Oh, my god! What is that like?

Mike: And young parents, too. It’s just so hard.

Patricia: And a six-hour drive to the hospital each time, so the hardship on the family is incredible, and you think, I want to help them. And what will give him back a little bit of his childhood, and what will fuel him in some of his darker days? And who can say no to that? It’s a beautiful thing. My favorite statistic with Make-A-Wish is we grant 100% of the wishes of the children who qualify, who have a life-threatening medical condition, and we do each one with the level of creativity and love and compassion that we did Miles’s with.

Well, when we talk about the “yes and” sensibility, I feel like the exemplar of that is E.J. I’d love for you to talk to me about him.

Mike: A shining monument to humanity.

Dana: Not to put him on a pedestal.

Mike: Not to put him on a pedestal, but this is what humanity should aspire to.

Patricia: Oh, no kidding!

He is Batman.

Mike: Hands down.

Dana: He is Batman!

Mike: He is also Bruce Wayne, which is hilarious.

Patricia: When I was working with the family, and putting this together, they were very concerned because Miles — well, Miles was five, but he was also shy, and so I presented the idea of having a full-sized Batman, and he would be a mini-me. I didn’t want to take the focus away from him but the parents said, “Oh, my god. That’s perfect,” and I said okay, and the first person that came to mind was E.J.

I worked with him literally ten years before on Ben’s Game, which took our website down that time, too. So, I just knew the level of creativity that he adds to it, and he’s a former stunt double, he’s an inventor, and he is so amazing with children. So, he was my guy, and it was too funny. His wife saw the email first, and he goes, “I don’t have a choice in the matter, do I?” and she said, “Nope.” And then, essentially, reached out to her and asked her if she’d be the damsel, and she said, “I’d be honored,” which is kind of funny because Sue’s the most accomplished badass.

Dana: My favorite line in the movie is from E.J. Well, now I’ll botch the line, but basically, the part when he says that his computer breaks, he broke the projector, and he says something like, “My whole life I will have known — Miles will know no different, but my whole life, I will know I could have made it better.” Who thinks like that? Do you know how hard it is making a projector that goes in broad daylight, that you can actually see? What he was doing was kind of magnificent in itself.

I think what this event illustrates…partially, it shows how people are willing to come together to help out a sick child, but I think a key factor, also, is Batman. Batman is beloved. What did you learn about Batman, having gone through this?

Dana: Everything, because I was not a Batman person, so I learned everything about it, and I understand now. I see it through my children’s eyes because we were more of a Star Wars family, less of a Batman family or superheroes in general, and now we just everything, and it’s just the goodness in that character, and the goodness in everyman’s man — with a little money but everyman’s man, it’s an amazing character. And he doesn’t have any superpowers, so Miles was the one that you that, and said, “That’s why I like him because he’s just a regular guy.”

Mike: Yeah, he just rises the the occasion, right? He’s the hero we need, as Chris Nolan says in the trilogy. I saw a really great documentary called “Tales of the Knight.” It’s a small, crowd-funded documentary, but it’s really cool because it shows how that character touches people. It’s really interesting, just the history of comic books, in general, invented generally by Jewish immigrants here coming to a safer world.

And talking about people using their own strength and power and skills to become the best part of humanity, and an ideal that — if you look at Superman, an ideal that humanity is supposed to aspire to, and it’s supposed to represent all the goodness in the world. And so, it’s very, very interesting. i think there’s some very big themes that, obviously, why we see superhero movies doing so well. People love that kind of stuff, sort of an example of the best of humanity, and I think San Francisco offered that.

In the film, at the end, you talk a little bit about how Miles may not necessarily have the full awareness of the extent of this event…

Patricia: When he’s 30, he might understand.

What do you hope his memory of this experience is?

Patricia: Well, right now, his memory is he saved San Francisco. He was really Batman. I love…his family texted me on Sunday because Sunday, the Chronicle reprinted the front page, and it said “Batkid Saves City,” and he saw that in the newsstand and said, “I’m available. You need to save lives today, too.” When he’s…I don’t know that…it’s taken me a long time to process. I was really oblivious to how moved people were, or that it’s the kind of event where people would approach me and remember what they were doing that day. You know, like, “I still remember the coverage…”

What are some of the most memorable reactions you’ve had from people who’ve seen the documentary?

Patricia: I think there’s two themes that people take away with it that we’ve heard the most, and most consistently. One is it renews their faith in humankind. How incredible is that? And the second is: it’s the best thing to happen to San Francisco. So, it’s inspiring, it’s fun, you’ll laugh. You might cry but it’ll be happy tears if you do, and it’s just a truly entertaining, great thing to see. The story is about all those volunteers and all the people who came together to make the world a better place, and if you can’t be moved by that, right? It’s just pretty incredible.

Dana: There’s a lot of laughter that I didn’t expect, like the first time we watched it with an audience, and I said to my partner, I think we made a comedy! Because people were just laughing, and there was also a lot of cheering, and then I had one time I was sitting next to a rabbi who just was tearing — he had Kleenex out and was just totally tearing up the whole time, but mostly it’s laughter and cheering.

Patricia: And allow me to tell you the other amazing thing. Everything was a wow moment, right? Wow, wow, wow, wow! Well, Dana has dedicated the last 18 months of her life as a volunteer, and she’s donating her proceeds to the Batkid Fund. Who does that, right? So, we hope that people go see it, and we hope that that influences how many more theaters that it comes in, and more people can enjoy the love and share in it.

Mike: And we’re really excited that — I’m really excited, anyway, that this is sort of an opportunity for the folks involved to be able to direct the conversation about what the Batkid Day means. I think on the day of, the people were the filmmakers, so you know, you had news, you had traditional media as well, and helicopters, and fireboats, and so on, but the people were the newsmakers. Everyone had an iPhone; everyone was tweeting, Instagramming, Facebooking, yada, yada.

So, I think people…there were two sort of major things on that day. I think there was the emotion of the event, of people coming together, and people saying, “I’ve never seen anything like this. I’ve never felt anything like this.” But there were also people documenting the sort of spectacle of it. It’s big, it’s crazy. There’s 10,000 people in Union Square. There’s Lamborghinis driving out. It’s exciting.

That’s great, too, but I think one of the things that I was really excited about when hearing that Dana was involved and there was a movie, a documentary happening, was that it was an opportunity for the people involved to speak about what it meant to us, what we think is important about local volunteerism, why we think it’s important to support your community, and talk about some of those issues that we really care about and we think other people should also care about.

I think San Francisco planted a huge flag in the ground, and said: this is what’s possible when people come together, and it’s insane. It’s truly insane! So, I feel like we made the statement, and now we get to, with the movie, we get to talk about why it matters.

Many thanks to Dana Nachman, Patricia Wilson, and Mike Jutan for being so generous with their time. Batkid Begins is currently playing in select theaters. To hear some more of my thoughts on the film, catch the latest episode of the MovieFilm Podcast via the embed below, or at this link:

Snoop Dogg, Mike Huckabee and Timbaland — Stop Hating on Caitlyn Jenner, Now!

Snoop, Timbaland and Drake Bell, I’m surprised by your insensitivity to Caitlyn Jenner. But Connor Cruise and Mike Huckabee, your ignorance about transgender people is majorly dismaying. Get educated before you say another cruel word.

Caitlyn Jenner’s Haters — Snoop Dogg, Mike Huckabee and Others… Stop!

Caitlyn Jenner is on a mission to help other transgender people by revealing her life-long struggle — and she’s no doubt not surprised by haters like presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, Tom Cruise’s son, Connor Cruise, Drake Bell, Snoop Dogg and Timabaland. Caitlyn had to realistically know that not everyone would be thrilled by the revelation that her true female self had been hidden inside the body of a man — an Olympic hero, no less — for 65 years.

That’s largely why she waited so long living a lie, and feeling lonely and alone with her secret. But now, it’s time for her dis-ers to get with Caitlyn’s program, and to no longer live in ignorance about what it is to be a transgender person, like 700,000 people in the United States. None of them, like Caitlyn Jenner, asked to be born as a transgender person.

As Jenner explained in an ABC interview with Diane Sawyer, she always had “the soul of a female.” Transgender people don’t choose or want to have the soul of one sex and the body of another — it makes for an extremely difficult life. And this has nothing to do with sex drive. “It’s apples and oranges,” Jenner explained to Diane Sawyer. “There’s two different things here. Sexuality is who you personally are attracted to — who turns you on. But gender identity has to do with who you are as a person and your soul and who you identify with inside.”

Transgender Hatred Needs To Cease — Now!

Now let’s be clear here — it’s just rude to call Caitlyn a “science project” like Snoop Dogg did on Instagram on June 3. And it’s extremely insensitive to tell Caitlyn and the other hundreds of thousands of transgender people that “there are so many more important things that should be talked about…and SO MANY MORE IMPORTANT PEOPLE that actually deserve an award,” like Connor Cruise did in a cruel Twitter rant. Connor was referring to the ESPY Arthur Ashe Courage Award, which Caitlyn will receive on July 15. Connor has no idea of what it’s like to be born into such a difficult life — having the soul of one gender and body of another.

As we see with both Connor and Mike Huckabee, there are huge prejudices against transgender people and that’s why it is so courageous to very publicly acknowledge being transgender, as Caitlyn has done. Sadly, 41 percent of transgender people have attempted suicide. Isn’t that a clear indication of how tough their lives are? Just last January, 17-year-old transgender girl Leelah Alcorn killed herself after her conservatively religious parents refused to accept that she wanted to transition.

Leelah left a suicide note on her Tumblr saying:

“Please don’t be sad, it’s for the better. The life I would’ve lived isn’t worth living in… because I’m transgender… I feel like a girl trapped in a boy’s body”.

Meanwhile, presidential candidate Mike Huckabee mocked transgender people in a speech last February, in which he laughingly said, “I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could take showers in P.E. I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today!'”

He also slammed cities for allowing transgender people to use public bathrooms. “Your 7-year-old daughter, if she goes into the restroom…can’t be offended if she’s greeted by a 42-year-old man who feels more like a woman than he does a man.” Huckabee clearly refuses to educate himself so that he understands that transgender people are not motivated by wanting to snoop on the other sex. That’s ridiculous!

Caitlyn Jenner’s Dissers Need To Educate Themselves

Huckabee should take a moment and read the words penned by Leelah in her suicide note:

My mom reacted extremely negatively telling me that it would be a phase, that I would never truly be a girl, that God doesn’t make mistakes… if you are reading this parents, please don’t tell this to your kids even if you are Christian or against transgender people…that won’t do anything but make them hate themself.

Mike Huckabee, it’s time to get off your pedestal and stop insulting transgender people. Drake Bell, Timbaland and Snoop: Stop making mean jokes, and Connor, get informed. Caitlyn is highly motivated to help improve the tortured lives and prevent the needless deaths of transgender people like Leelah. Misunderstanding transgender people and discrimination are real issuse, huge issues. It’s time to offer love, not hate.

Podcast Reviews: The Late Show Podcast and Mike and Tom Eat Snacks

2015-06-05-1433543507-5526733-late_show.jpegDavid Letterman has said his last goodbyes and his show’s set in the Ed Sullivan Theatre has been carted off, consigned to the showbiz Dumpster. Next up is Stephen Colbert, who is busy running test shows, whipping his writers into a frenzy to generate material, and trying to nail down the new character that he’ll become to replace the OLD Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report.

Fortunately for his fans that have been jonesing for his return, Colbert has turned to podcasting to fill the spare moments in his busy days getting ready for the September 8th launch of the new version of The Late Show. And the debut episode of The Late Show Podcast, entitled “In The Bad Room with Stephen” is a yack-packed 20 minutes that doesn’t disappoint.

Recorded in “the bad room” — a square, windowless chamber in the bowels of the show’s production office, Colbert is joined by Tom Purcell, his executive producer, and Opus Moreschi, the head writer and supervising producer for the new show. Their conversation rambles around a lot of subjects having to do with the process of gearing up for the show.

Colbert’s improv chops are in full view, as he throws off great, bone-dry lines and quasi-jokes as this initial show unwinds. One topic checked off is the width of the new audience seats in the studio — will they be 21 inches or 24 inches wide? Equated by Colbert as being for “the European ass or the American ass” and, as one might expect, his studio’s seats are going to be spec’d for the American ass.

The Late Show Podcast may well be become a viral phenomenon of its own before the three months runs out and CBS takes the warps off of the new The Late Show Starring with Stephen Colbert television show.

2015-06-05-1433543552-7606083-MATES.jpegThe popular (and only) snack-rating show, Mike and Tom Eat Snacks, may also be the most sporadically appearing podcast (besides my own) on the web. But hosts Michael Ian Black and Tom Cavanagh are back for two consecutive weeks now, so maybe there’s a trend emerging.

Or maybe it’s just because Cavanagh’s character, the Reverse Flash, was killed off at the end of the first season of the CW’s The Flash series and neither of the gentlemen are overly busy at the moment.

In any case, fans of the show (or “maties”, as they’re referred to by the hosts) get at least a couple of nice hits in a row. This week — spoiler alert — the boys’ snack pick is Quaker Oats White Cheddar Rice Cakes.

As always, the snack is the least important element of this show. It’s the banter between Black and Cavanagh that so much listening fun. This episode offers up what can best be termed an angry history lesson about the Greeks by Cavanagh, who seems ill equipped to actually enlighten us about the topic.

This follows a rant about “unnecessary Smart cars” and wristwatches, both of which are contributing to the downfall of mankind. There’s also a cool song provided during the break, ostensibly from a fan, about the show itself.

I don’t want to give away much more but suffice it to say that if you think they’re going to laud the humble rice cake (complete with white cheddar flavoring), it doesn’t end up faring so well.

Podcasts I’m also listening to this week: Drive-Time Podcast: If The Brandy Bunch Kids Found A Porno Tape and Chillpak Hollywood Hour #420: Favorite Funny Ladies of Stage and Screen

Mike Huckebee Stands Up for the Duggars… and Jeb Bush?

No one ever said the Duggars were perfect except the Duggars. Well, not perfect, just better than you. So, while it might be ghoulish fun to read that their show has been removed from TLC’s schedule, I remind myself that forgiveness is an obligation, at least in my faith. I can’t speak to anyone else’s crazy crap.

Naturally, the Duggars have unpleasant secrets — whom the gods would destroy, they first make yeech.

So we’re all — Christians, I mean — stuck with the Duggars. But the person who’s really stuck with them is former Fox News personality Mike Huckabee. They’re all over his presidential campaign. Which is why he stood up for them this morning, in a Facebook post that already had 1.7 million likes.

The funny thing about Huckabee’s post, though, is if you go through it, and change the family name from “Duggar” to “Bush,” it pretty much sums up how the entire Republican Party feels about Jeb Bush, George W. and the hundreds of thousands of people George W. killed in Iraq.

Maybe Mike can use it when he endorses Jeb at the convention.

Look:

Janet and I want to affirm our support for the Duggar/Bush family. Josh’s/George’s actions when he was an underage teen/ President of the United States are as he described them himself, ‘inexcusable’/’hypothetical,’ but that doesn’t mean ‘unforgivable.’ He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities. No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh/George or his family by sensationalizing the story.

Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things.

The reason that the law protects disclosure of many actions on the part of a minor/President of the United States is that the society has traditionally understood something that today’s blood-thirsty media does not understand — that being a minor/President means that one’s judgement is not mature.

No one needs to defend Josh’s/George’s actions as a teenager/Commander-in-chief, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult/recluse is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility.

Those who have enjoyed revealing this long ago sins in order to discredit the Duggar/Bush family have actually revealed their own insensitive bloodthirst, for there was no consideration of the fact that the victims wanted this to be left in the past and ultimately a judge/Dick Cheney had the information on file destroyed–not to protect Josh/George, but the innocent victims.

Janet and I love Jim Bob/George Poppy and Michelle/Barbara and their entire family. They are no more perfect a family than any family, but their Christian witness is not marred in our eyes because following Christ is not a declaration of our perfection, but of HIS perfection.

It is precisely because we are all sinners that we need His grace and His forgiveness. We have been blessed to receive God’s love and we would do no less than to extend our love and support for our friends. In fact, it is such times as this, when real friends show up and stand up.

Today, Janet and I want to show up and stand up for our friends. Let others run from them. We will run to them with our support.

Bush/Huckabee ’16! You read it here first.

Mad Mike Huckabee: Gay Marriage Fury Road

In the future, Christian civilization will collapse. Bands of militant homosexuals, dressed in leather and face paint, will roam the cultural wastelands, gay marrying anyone and anything in their path. Only one man stands between them and the total destruction of traditional marriage–Mad Mike Huckabee!

But first he has to tie the knot himself.

MAD MIKE HUCKABEE (played by Tom Hardy): That’s where you come in.

IMPERATOR FURIOSA (played by Charlize Theron): That’s where I come in what? Take off that damn face mask–I can’t understand a word you’re saying. Who do you think you are–Bane in The Dark Knight Rises?

MAD MIKE (removing the face mask): There, that’s better. Like I was saying, that’s where you come in. If we get married in a big public ceremony, it will revive interest in the traditional institution. I know this great little pizzeria in Indiana that will cater. Pepperoni for everyone!

FURIOSA: Yes, but why me?

MAD MIKE: You’re a woman, aren’t you?

FURIOSA: So?

MAD MIKE (winking): I don’t want to get graphic, but I have a tallywacker and you have a vavajay.

FURIOSA: So?

MAD MIKE: That’s the way God intended it to be! One man and one woman–just like it says in the Bible. I’m willing to overlook your crew-cut, prosthetic arm, and general lack of femininity.

FURIOSA: Gee, thanks. Actually, they practiced polygamy in the Old Testament. King David had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines.

MAD MIKE: Those were Jews, not Christians. You know how licentious they are. Talk to Mad Mel Gibson.

FURIOSA: Mormons practiced polygamy until the end of the nineteenth century. Some still do, in secret.

MAD MIKE: Mormons aren’t Christians either. Ask Mad Mitt Romney about that. And I thought you were against polygamy. You killed SPOILER ALERT Immortan Joe and liberated his five wives, didn’t you?

FURIOSA: My point is the definition of marriage has changed based on the needs of society. People used to get married at twelve or thirteen until they raised the age of consent.

MAD MIKE: It’s still sixteen in Arkansas, one of the lowest in the country–a fact I’m very proud of.

FURIOSA: Caucasians and African-Americans used to not be allowed to intermarry. The last anti-miscegenation law was repealed in 1967.

MAD MIKE: Obama was the product of race mixing. Need I say more?

FURIOSA: Catholic priests were allowed to marry until the twelfth century.

MAD MIKE: Again, not Christians. Those were Catholics. Talk to Mad Rick Santorum. Anyway, marriage was always between men and women, regardless of age, race, or number of individuals involved.

FURIOSA: Not true. The ancient Greeks had a form of gay marriage, and they invented democracy.

MAD MIKE: Democracy is overrated. Have you seen the Republican presidential candidates this primary season?

FURIOSA: You’ve got a point. Okay, Native Americans had Two-Spirit people.

MAD MIKE: You know what happened to the Native Americans. You want to run a casino in the desert and sell cigarettes, be my guest.

FURIOSA: Actually, a casino in the desert wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Maybe I can start my own Las Vegas.

MAD MIKE: You’ve been hanging out with Eve Ensler and her Vulvalini too much. Next you’ll be telling me women aren’t chattel. Speaking of Vulvalini, let’s discuss personal grooming. Does the carpet match the drapes?

FURIOSA: What?

MAD MIKE: Do you shave or wax?

FURIOSA: Neither. Although I’m thinking of getting a Brazilian to protest Jeb Bush.

Furiosa starts to climb back in her War Rig.

MAD MIKE: Hey, I thought all you female action/adventure heroines secretly suffered from baby hunger. Didn’t you see Avengers: Age of Ultron?

FURIOSA: I’m not the Black Widow and you’re certainly not the Hulk. He’s much larger…in every single way.

MAD MIKE: Now you’ve done it! You’ve insulted my manhood! You’re so mean!

Mad Mike starts crying,

FURIOSA: Stop! I can’t stand to see a grown man cry. Okay, I’ll do it–I’ll marry you.

MAD MIKE (slyly): You will?

FURIOSA: Yes.

Mad Mike immediately turns off the waterworks.

MAD MIKE: Terrific! Once we’re married, I’ll be head of the household, and you’ll be my submissive helpmate, just the way God intended it to be. Then we’ll go forth, be fruitful, and multiply. I want a big family–ten or twelve kids at least. Maybe we can even beat the Duggars’ record! Well, what do you say?

Furiosa hits him in the lug nuts with a tire iron. The last vestige of Christianity collapses. Oh, what day! What a lovely day!

Killer Mike Calls Bill O’Reilly ‘Full Of S***’ On ‘Real Time With Bill Maher’

Killer Mike appeared on “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night and was very candid about his opinion of Bill O’Reilly.

“I like Bill O’Reilly as a character,” the Run the Jewels rapper said, prompting the host to laugh. “I hate how white people take him so seriously,” Mike continued. “He’s more full of shit than an outhouse.”

The rapper stuck by his belief that O’Reilly puts up a “fictitious” facade. But Maher disagreed slightly, saying that the political commentator’s temperament was no act. O’Reilly “may be full of shit,” Maher said, “but it’s sincere shit.”

The two then discussed O’Reilly’s claim that rap music is responsible for the decline of religion in America. Mike’s response was pure laughter.

In Friday’s episode Maher also brought up America’s obsession with British accents and discussed the criticism of first lady Michelle Obama’s speech at Tuskegee University with panelists Killer Mike, John Waters, Heather McGhee and Charles Murray.

Mike Kelley made nostalgia, memory, and repression in everyday life the topics of his idiosyncratic sculptures, performances, paintings, and installations, which conflate vernacular sources and high modernist aesthetics. Jon Stewart Says Mike Huckabee’s Gay Marriage Stance ‘Makes No F**king Sense’

Daily Show” host Jon Stewart appears to have a new hobby: tearing apart Mike Huckabee’s hypocrisy.

When the former Arkansas governor and possible 2016 presidential candidate was on the show last month, Stewart went after him for attacking Beyonce’s music but performing with Ted Nugent.

Now Stewart’s tearing apart Huckabee for the bizarre explanation he gave for opposing gay marriage. On Sunday, Huckabee said he can’t evolve on the issue because it’s a biblical matter.

“I can’t just ‘change’ with the ‘times’ if it means deviating from ‘biblical law,'” Stewart said (complete with the air quotes) in summing up Huckabee’s opposition to same-sex marriage. Then he pointed out a few other pieces of “biblical law,” at least two of which might not be as important to Huckabee.

“It’s why Huckabee never mixes fabric in his clothes or trims his beard or sleeps with another man’s slave,” Stewart said. “It would be wrong.”

Huckabee also declared that asking him to accept gay marriage would be like “asking somebody who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped shrimp in their deli.”

Stewart said that analogy “makes no fucking sense.”

“No one is forcing you to get metaphorically married to the biblical abomination that is this bacon-wrapped shrimp,” Stewart said.

And that led to one of the most unforgettable “Daily Show” interviews yet.

Shark Attack Survivor, Mike Coots’s Stunning Instagram Photos Will Keep You Inspired

This is Mike Coots.

When he was 17 years old, he lost his right leg to a shark attack while surfing off waters in his home island of Kauai.

For some, his story might be terrifying just to hear, even 17 years later…

But for Coots, it’s just something you “gotta laugh” about.

While babysitting his six-year-old-nephew, this was presented to him: “It’s you, uncle Mike,” his nephew told him.

He has immense respect for the ocean and does his part in keeping it clean.

“We need to take better care of our oceans,” Coots writes. “Here is a crapload of net and rope this morning. Must of been a few hundred pounds.”

And he shows incredible compassion for the creature that once caused him so much pain.

Coots is an ambassador for the conservation of sharks. In 2010, he was part of the effort to pass a ban on the possession and sale of shark fins.

“I remember the first time getting back in the water … I remember jumping in the ocean, and it felt glorious,”

Coots recalls in a 2012 interview with The Huffington Post.

To this day, he continues to inspire all those who view his incredible photos…

…and hears the story of that one day…

‘Mike & Molly’: Melissa McCarthy Squared Off Against An Exercise Ball And We All Won

Melissa McCarthy is one of the most gifted physical comedians working today, as evidenced by her feature film work, her guest hosting stints on “Saturday Night Live,” and this most recent season of “Mike & Molly.” The CBS sitcom is leaning hard on McCarthy to bring her signature lunacy to the mix, and it’s definitely adding new energy to the show

It may be in the simplest moments that McCarthy shines the brightest. A brilliant physical comedian can get laughs with the simplest of set-ups. In this case, it was McCarthy squaring off against an exercise ball … and it was hilarious! After failing to get her writing chair comfortable enough, Molly decided she’d give the exercise ball a try.

Anyone who’s tried to sit on one will tell you it’s not as easy as it might look. For Molly, it was an absolute disaster, as she nearly wiped out on several occasions. For “Mike & Molly” it was a simple scene that may have had some of the strongest laughter of the night. The show doesn’t have to break the mold to be funny. Melissa McCarthy can make anything funny, and sometimes simple is better. Just point the camera and let her go. The laughs will follow.

“Mike & Molly” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.

‘Mike & Molly’: Victoria Convinces Molly To Smoke Marijuana, Leading To Hilarity In The Funeral Home

One side effect of Molly’s mid-life crisis on “Mike & Molly” is that she’s open to having a lot more fun and taking more chances. While Mike was discovering some rather explicit writing on her laptop, Molly was spending some quality time with her sister, Victoria. Molly had always been the good girl, while Victoria was the wild child who knew how to party, and score great weed.

She convinced the new-and-improved Molly to loosen up and light up, which led to a hilarious romp through the funeral home where Victoria works as a beautician. Molly was able to get over her fear of dead people, and even participated in one of Victoria’s favorite pastimes: climbing into caskets.

The two jumped inside a pair of side-by-side caskets and tried to hide when the cleaning lady came in. But they were high and snacking and could not control the giggles, or their own impish behavior. When the cleaning lady came up for a closer look, Molly popped up and offered her a Bugle. The woman, understandably, was terrified.

While we have no idea where Molly is going in her life — we suspect she doesn’t either — it sure is proving a blast watching Melissa McCarthy bring something new, and yet familiar to her legions of big-screen fans, to the role.

Keep up with the hilarity on the all-new “Mike & Molly” every Monday at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
