Seahawks cut starter Tom Johnson after one game, nearly $2 million

The Seahawks have made the surprising decision to cut starting defensive tackle Tom Johnson, just one game into his stint with the team. The 34-year-old Johnson started against the Broncos in last week’s season-opening loss, and he has already received a $ 950,000 signing bonus and a $ 15,000 roster bonus. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the Seahawks just want to free up a roster spot to bolster another position this week and plan to re-sign Johnson next week.

Burnett New York to Bow for Pre-Fall With $2.5 Million From Investors

Out on her own for the first time, Emily Burnett has lined up some well-placed investors for the new Burnett New York ready-to-wear, cocktail dresses and eveningwear line.
In June, Burnett exited Dennis Basso after a 10-year run. She inadvertently met her future cofounder and co-chief executive officer Sterling McDavid at the designer’s company. Pre-fall will be the first collection for the new label.
McDavid said she visited 20 couture houses in search of a wedding gown, before deciding on Dennis Basso, where Burnett was working at the time. “My experience at Dennis Basso with Emily, Dennis and the whole team was so positive, uplifting and I felt that I was part of this design process,” she said.
McDavid’s understanding of fashion started with her great-grandmother, who was a seamstress. Her mother had a keen interest in fashion and took McDavid to her first fashion show around the age of 10. Over the years, McDavid got to know numerous designers through her network, as well as her mother’s, but she said Burnett stood out. So much so that McDavid asked the designer how was it that she was not working independently. Like many designers, the idea of starting a signature company was something

Ivanka Trump Closes $100 Million Fashion Business

After what has been a bumpy few years, the Ivanka Trump brand has shuttered its doors for good.
Started in 2007 as a fine jewelry company, the Ivanka Trump brand branched out into sportswear, footwear, accessories, fragrance, denim and other categories over the years. Before Donald Trump took office, the label was estimated to be a $ 100 million brand, but post-inauguration, the company had a rocky time with consumers due partially to #GrabYourWallet founder Shannon Coulter’s call for a boycott of the brand. Many shoppers associated the brand with the first daughter although she stepped away from the company before her father took office.
Coulter did not respond immediately to a request for comment Tuesday.
Executives at the company did not disclose how many employees were affected by the closure. Retail distribution dwindled in recent months, and earlier this month, Hudson Bay dropped the collection in a very public way. That was followed by the circulation of an online petition by activist group Care2, which  called for Lord & Taylor to do the same. The group had nearly reached its goal of 18,000 signatures Tuesday.
In September of 2016, the company had distribution in 800 stores internationally including such accounts as Lord & Taylor,

Convivio’s 14th Edition Raises 2 Million Euros

MILAN — The 14th edition of biannual Italian fund-raiser Convivio closed in Milan on Sunday, raising around 2 million euros.
Proceedings from the five-day event, which drew more than 33,000 visitors, will be donated to Anlaids Lombardy to support a diversified range of projects spotlighting research, care, prevention and information on HIV/AIDS.
“Convivio is not only a charity event but a chance to put AIDS under the spotlight, so that we keep talking about it and raise awareness on prevention among the younger audience and less-informed adults,” said Gabriella Gavazzeni Moroni, president of Anlaids Lombardy.
Money was collected through the market area selling half-priced high-end goods donated by around 200 fashion companies, including Alexander McQueen, Azzedine Alaïa, Brooks Brothers, Prada, Versace, Moschino and Saint Laurent, among others.
After the market was closed to the public on Sunday, the fund-raiser moved online with a series of digital auctions in partnership with New York-based Charitybuzz and Los Angeles’ Omaze, to sell fashion- and luxury travel-themed experiences. Additionally the eBay for Charity platform will keep selling Convivio’s T-shirts worn and signed by the event’s testimonials until June 16.

Walmart’s Doug McMillon’s Pay Tops $22 Million

Doug McMillon, president and chief executive officer of Walmart Inc., saw his total compensation rise 2 percent last year to $ 22.8 million, according to a regulatory filing. Most of that came from $ 15.7 million in stock awards, the ultimate value of which is tied to the company’s share price. He also drew a salary of $ 1.3 million and received incentive pay of $ 4.7 million.
Greg Foran, ceo of Walmart U.S., saw his pay slip 4.6 percent to $ 11 million.
Marc Lore, ceo of Walmart’s U.S. e-commerce business, received total compensation of $ 10.3 million — a big drop from the $ 243.9 million he reeled in during the prior year, although most of that came from his sale of Jet.com to the retail giant.
Lore is helping lead the company’s battle with online giant Amazon.
Under new rules from the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company also reported that its median pay, excepting the ceo, was $ 19,177. That means McMillon brings in 1,118-times what the median Walmart worker does.

Snapchat Stock Drops $800 Million After Rihanna Condemned Ad Making Light of Domestic Violence

Less than a month after Kylie Jenner sent Snapchat stock into a downward spiral, another celebrity slam on the photo-sharing app has seemingly caused the company to take a major hit.

The stock prices of Snap Inc. fell around 4 percent on Thursday, reported CNN. The dip came after Rihanna responded to the app’s apology for running an ad for a game called “Would You Rather” asking users if they would rather slap Rihanna or punch her ex Chris Brown, alluding to a 2009 domestic violence incident. The market value of the app’s parent company dropped almost $ 800 million, according to the outlet.

On Friday, Snap’s stock fell another 1 percent, CNN reported.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel’s personal net worth dropped $ 150 million due to the decease, according to Forbes. He is currently worth an estimated $ 3.8 billion, Forbes reported.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

In 2009, Rihanna’s then-boyfriend Brown physically assaulted her in his car ahead of a Grammys party.

Brown, now 28, was charged with two felony counts — assault and making criminal threats — and the exes reached a plea agreement that spared Brown jail time after he pleaded guilty to felony assault by means likely to cause great bodily injury.

After the social media app apologized on Tuesday for running the since-pulled ad, Rihanna responded via Instagram on Thursday.

“Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess! I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb!” the 30-year-old singer wrote in an Instagram Story.

“You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it!!! This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them…but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet…you let us down!” Rihanna’s post continued.

“Shame on you,” she added. “Throw the whole app-oligy away.”

A lawyer for the Brown shared the following statement with PEOPLE: “Whoever conceived this at Snap Chat needs to be slapped.”

“This advertisement is disgusting and never should have appeared on our service. We are so sorry we made the terrible mistake of allowing it through our review process. We are investigating how that happened so that we can make sure it never happens again,” Snapchat said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

After removing the ad from the app on Tuesday, Snapchat also released the following statement to the BBC: “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.”

Last month, Snapchat’s stock dropped $ 1.3 billion in market value, according to Time, after Jenner revealed to her followers that she no longer opens the app.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The outlet also reported Wall Street analyst Mark May downgraded the stock to sell from neutral after the app’s redesign sparked negative reviews from users.

Time’s Up Raises $21 Million for Legal Defense Fund to Help Victims of Sexual Harassment

The Time’s Up legal defense fund is already helping victims of sexual harassment.

Two months after the Time’s Up movement launched, the National Women’s Legal Center has started matching victims of sexual harassment with a network of lawyers and public relations professionals provided by the legal defense fund.

“Since Jan. 1, we’ve had over 1,600 people seek assistance,” NWLC President and CEO Fatima Goss Graves tells PEOPLE. “That number is continuing to grow, which tells us that the need is great.”

“People have begun to boldly share their stories and now their boldly beginning to seek assistance,” adds Graves.

To date, over 600 attorneys have joined the network.

“Some attorneys take cases pro bono while others will do it at reduced rates,” says Graves. “Everyone who joins this network has agreed to provide a free consultation. We are continuing to build out and recruit additional attorneys.”

The Time’s Up initiative has raised over $ 21 million for the legal defense fund, which helps victims of sexual harassment protect themselves from sexual misconduct and the fallout from reporting it.

“The donations have come from a real range of donors, more than 20,000 people have given to the fund. People have given from every state in the United States and globally,” says Graves.

More than 20,000 people and groups have donated so far, in sums ranging from $ 5 to $ 2 million.

“It’s critical that we keep the momentum up. We have been really successful in raising so much in such a short period of time and driving attention to the cause,” she says. “The need is so great. We aren’t going to stop.”

Movement starters Meryl StreepReese WitherspoonJennifer Aniston and Shonda Rhimes each donated $ 500,000, while Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey chimed in with $ 100,000 each. Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain and Cate Blanchett continued the donations with $ 50,000 each.

More than 300 prominent actresses and female agents, writers, directors, producers and entertainment executives signed an impassioned open letter that officially announced the movement on New Year’s Day.

“The struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard and acknowledged in male-dominated workplaces must end; time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly,” the letter read in the New York Times.

Billed as a horological interpretation of the Chiron, the fastest production car in the world with a top speed of 260 miles per hour for road use, the timepiece is the fruit of four years of development and features a unique design inspired by the car’s engine, interior and bodywork construction.

Steve Amstutz, vice president and chief commercial officer at Parmigiani Fleurier, said the brands share the values of innovation, authenticity and exclusivity. The latter is certainly true: The watchmaker will produce only three limited editions of 10 watches each.
The white gold and rose gold versions, available now, are priced at $ 295,000, while the titanium edition coming out next year will retail for $ 270,000, said Amstutz, who told WWD the brand will unveil an exclusive personalization service for the timepiece at the upcoming Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie trade fair in Geneva in January.

Bailey Pockets 1.7 Million Pounds After Cashing in Share Options

SUMMER SHARES: Christopher Bailey may have forgone his bonus two years in a row, but that decision hasn’t left him with empty pockets. On the contrary — Burberry’s chief creative officer has begun cashing in part of an options package of one million shares granted to him in 2013.
This week the designer took home around 1.7 million pounds, net of tax, after selling 174,050 shares at a price of 17.97 pounds. As reported, a chunk of the 2013 options package vested last month.
In the 2016-17 fiscal year, Bailey’s salary of 1.1 million pounds was flat on the previous year. He received benefits and allowances of 469,000 pounds; pension contributions of 330,000 pounds; and 240,000 pounds as part of a share plan.
Last year, he also scooped an exceptional share award of 1.4 million pounds as part of a performance-linked bonus agreed upon in 2014, when he took on the added role of chief executive officer. He has since passed the baton to Burberry’s new ceo, Marco Gobbetti.
Bailey turned down his bonus “in light of the underlying financial performance of the business for the year.” Burberry said the board “welcomed” and agreed with his decision.
As reported, profits for fiscal 2016-17, which ended on March

Thieves Steal $3.9 Million in Jewels From London’s Masterpiece Art Fair

HOT WEATHER HEIST: Thieves quietly swooped on London’s Masterpiece Art Fair, an annual event that takes place in Chelsea, stealing jewels worth 3 million pounds, or $ 3.9 million, from the Geneva-based jeweler Boghossian.
The ticketed fair, which showcases high-end art, antiques and jewelry, has round-the-clock security. It takes place every year at Royal Hospital Chelsea and draws up to 44,000 visitors. According to police, the thieves struck between 5 p.m. on Tuesday and 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
The fair ran from June 29 to July 5, and was open every day from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., which meant that the robbery could have taken place while the fair was still open for business. The thieves were thought to have used distraction techniques to carry out the robbery.
The fair said it is “fully cooperating with the police,” who have been examining the CCTV camera in the space. However, no arrests have been made and there were no witnesses to the theft. Guests are checked on their way into the fair, and on the way out. All bags are opened and examined upon arrival and as people are exiting.

A ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Set Features Around $2 Million In Snacks

Blockbusters are caught in an endless cycle of bigger-is-better clichés. Budgets have swollen so much over the past few decades that moderation is now a foreign concept for Hollywood’s major studios. This phenomenon manifests most obviously in the special-effects arena, but don’t for one second assume it doesn’t also mean first-class snacks.

One “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie alone allotted a whopping estimate of $ 2 million for craft services, the department that provides meals and goodies for everyone on the set throughout production. Jack Davenport, who played Commodore James Norrington in the first three “Pirates” films, told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Sunday that a chef once informed him the food budget was “essentially unlimited.”

“I was like, ‘What does that mean?,” Davenport said. “He was like, ‘I don’t know, $ 2 million.’ I was like, ‘For snacks?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah?’ That sounds frivolous, but it wasn’t. He obviously had to keep people fed.”

Another “Pirates” alum, Lee Arenberg, who played Pintel, recounted the “legendary speech” a producer delivered at the end of a shoot, in which he said the caterers had prepared 170,000 meals.

For added context: The entire price tag of this year’s Best Picture winner, “Moonlight,” totaled $ 1.5 million.

Of course, $ 2 million is chump change given the “Pirates” movies’ ballooning budgets. The 2003 original cost Disney $ 140 million, while its 2006 and 2007 sequels climbed to a mind-boggling $ 225 million and $ 300 million, respectively. But contextualized within Hollywood history, $ 2 million is a wild sum: In the early days, actors and crew members brought their own lunches to work, brown-bag style. Now, studios will drop $ 2 million on food, but they’ll rarely greenlight the mid-budget original stories that drove the movie industry as recently as the 1990s.

The newest “Pirates” installment, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” opened this weekend with a $ 230 million budget, drawing in at least $ 62 million in ticket sales. Its predecessor, 2011’s “On Stranger Tides,” was the franchise’s weakest grosser domestically, but it saw the heftiest overseas revenue, exemplifying Hollywood’s reliance on foreign ticket sales. Many sequels, reboots and spin-offs have under-performed among American audiences over the past few years, but their foreign profits make that a non-issue.

The “Pirates” sequels’ scathing reviews aren’t enough to keep them down, though box-office analysts expect “Dead Men” could become the series’ weakest stateside moneymaker to date.

But hey, at least everyone on the set ate well.

More Than 5 Million People Have Watched This Mom’s Powerful Spoken-Word Poem

A spoken-word poem has gone viral for its refreshing look at how difficult it is for many moms to be seen as more than mothers.

In a video of her spoken-word poem that the United Kingdom’s Channel 4 News posted on March 30, poet Hollie McNish explains that she only feels like an individual at night in the few hours she gets before she goes to sleep and wakes up to do it all over again.

“Cinderella’s clock strikes at midnight each time. My clock strikes loudly at nine,” she said in her poem, which has been viewed more than 5.8 million times as of Friday.

McNish rhythmically described the feelings of being described as “so-and-so’s mum” and the idea of mothers being “underpaid, overworked” as “snot rags” and “milk makers.” She also emphasized the strength of mothers, but stressed that crying every once in a while isn’t a sign of weakness.

“Someone said that moms are the rocks that never crumble,” she said. “I don’t think that’s true ‘cause I do.”

At the end of her poem, McNish reminds her fellow mothers that their “stories are many.” And the poem in its entirety proves that their stories are worth telling.

Basking in near-universal acclaim, the thriller about a black photographer (Daniel Kaluuya) meeting his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) sinister family has coasted on organic hype. This is its third weekend in theaters, making it the fastest $ 100 million earner for Blumhouse, the horror-oriented production company that also funded “Split,” the “Paranormal Activity” franchise and the “Insidious” series. “Get Out” cost a modest $ 5 million to make, rendering the accomplishment particularly notable given original adult movies’ ongoing financial struggles.

Grosses for the reboot “Kong: Skull Island” and the Wolverine threequel “Logan” also come with surprises. Warner Bros. expected “Kong,” which has seen generally favorable reviews, to open around $ 50 million, so its $ 61 million domestic total is a major victory. That sum is on par with the previous “King Kong” adaptation, directed by Peter Jackson, which debuted at $ 62 million in 2005, when adjusted for inflation. As we wrote last week, King Kong remains one of Hollywood’s most reliable properties

Similarly, “Logan” still has claws at the box office. Most superhero flicks tend to see steep second-weekend declines because the fanboys and -girls rush to see them right away. But “Logan,” the restrained “X-Men” installment starring Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, made about $ 38 million, a decent coup. Its current totals sit at $ 152.7 million in domestic grosses and $ 437.7 million worldwide.

“The Shack” and “The Lego Batman Movie” round out the weekend’s Top 5.

“Moonlight,” which enjoyed its loftiest grosses last weekend following a surprising best picture win at the Oscars, collected another $ 1 million. It has now made a collective $ 27 million, a remarkable figure for an independent film that cost $ 1.5 million to make.

‘Logan’ Roars Into Theaters With Huge $85.3 Million Debut

Logan” tore into the weekend box office, opening to a massive $ 85.3 million and proving that moviegoers will show up in force for R-rated comic book movies. The superhero spinoff marks Hugh Jackman’s last turn as Wolverine after 17 years of donning the adamantium claws.

As the movie business grows more saturated with stories about costumed vigilantes, studios are trying to find ways to differentiate their own comic book adaptations. Like “Deadpool” before it, “Logan” demonstrates that adults will turn out for tentpole fare that is bloodier and more profane than your average X-Men movie.

“Logan” was produced by 20th Century Fox and cost $ 97 million to make. Set in the near future, it follows Wolverine and an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart), who leaving their hiding place on the Mexican border to help a young mutant (Dafne Keen). James Mangold, who previously collaborated with Jackman on 2013’s “The Wolverine,” directed the movie and co-wrote the screenplay. Critics embraced the film, hailing it as a comic book movie with bite, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman writing that “Logan” “…brings the saga to a satisfying finish.”

Despite “Logan’s” dominance, Blumhouse and Universal’s “Get Out” kept going strong. The low-budget thriller racked up $ 26.1 million, bringing its domestic haul to $ 75.9 million. That’s an impressive return for a film that cost less than $ 5 million to make.

Lionsgate’s “The Shack” took third place, earning a solid $ 16.1 million in its first weekend in theaters. The faith-based drama stars Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer and cost $ 26 million to produce. “The Shack” centers on a man (Sam Worthington) whose religious beliefs are tested following a family tragedy.

Warner Bros.’ “The Lego Batman Movie” and Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 2” rounded out the top five, earning $ 11.6 million and $ 4.7 million, respectively. That pushes the Lego spinoff’s box office total to $ 148.6 million and gives the John Wick followup a domestic gross of $ 83 million.

Fresh off its best picture win, A24’s “Moonlight” grossed over $ 2.5 million and crossed the $ 25 million mark. The indie studio expects the coming-of-age drama to be the highest-grossing film in its history. That said, “Moonlight,” which focuses on a young man growing up gay in Miami, is one of the least widely seen best picture winners, trailing the likes of “Spotlight” ($ 45 million, domestically ) and “Birdman” ($ 42.3 million, domestically). It has grossed more than “The Hurt Locker,” the 2009 victor that made just over $ 17 million stateside.

Bleecker Street’s “The Last Word” opened to $ 35,620 in limited release. The story of an aging businesswoman (Shirley MacLaine) who enlists a writer (Amanda Seyfried) to pen her obituary, screened in four locations last weekend

‘Rogue One’ Crushes Box Office Competition With Massive $155 Million Debut

LOS ANGELES, Dec 18 (Variety.com) – “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” sold out multiplexes around the country and brought fanboys and fangirls out in force over the weekend. The “Star Wars” prequel scored the second largest December opening in history, the second largest launch of the year, and one of the top debuts in history, opening to a massive $ 155 million.

Globally, the film has earned $ 290.5 million, after touching down in nearly every major foreign market save for China and South Korea.

Disney, which shelled out $ 4 billion to buy “Star Wars” creator LucasFilm in 2012, had been trying to downplay expectations for “Rogue One.” Executives noted that the film is the first “Star Wars” movie to exist outside of the main Skywalker clan storyline. It’s also a darker, war-themed tale; one that has an unusually high body count for a popcorn flick.

But the “Star Wars” pedigree proved irresistible to audiences, and the film seems positioned to play well through the holidays. Disney is planning to do more “Rogue One”-style spinoffs. The company is already working on a film about the early years of Han Solo that will star Alden Ehrenreich.

Most studios steered clear of “Rogue One,” but Warner Bros. and New Line offered up “Collateral Beauty” as counter-programming for audiences unmoved by tales of Jedi warriors. The drama about a grieving ad executive (Will Smith) was savaged by critics, and only managed to eke out a paltry $ 7 million debut for a fourth place finish. That’s a rough start for the picture and continues Smith’s bumpy period at the box office. The actor scored with last summer’s “Suicide Squad,” but struck out with the likes of “Focus,” “After Earth,” and “Concussion.” “Collateral Beauty” cost $ 36 million to produce. Village Roadshow also backed the picture. The opening weekend crowd skewed female and older, with women comprising 59% of the audience and 58% of ticket buyers clocking in over the age of 35.

Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. domestic distribution president, acknowledged that the poor reviews hurt the film, but stressed that its A-minus CinemaScore indicated that audiences were enjoying “Collateral Beauty.”

“I’m disappointed,” he said. “But the film plays well with an older audience, and we hope that over Christmas, they’ll have more free time available to go out and discover it.”

Disney’s “Moana” snagged second place, picking up $ 11.7 million and pushing its stateside gross to $ 161.9 million. Paramount’s “Office Christmas Party” nabbed third, earning $ 8.4 million and bringing the raunchy comedy’s total to $ 31.5 million after two weeks of release.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” rounded out the top five, picking up $ 5 million to push the Harry Potter spinoff’s domestic total to $ 207.7 million.

Oscar-frontrunner “La La Land” performed nicely in its expansion. The acclaimed musical picked up $ 4 million after moving from five to 200 theaters. That brings its total to $ 5.3 million. Lionsgate is backing the film, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as two Angelenos in love.

Amazon and Roadside’s “Manchester by the Sea” capitalized on a slew of Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, adding $ 4.2 million to its $ 14 million haul while moving from 356 to 1,200 theaters.

In limited release, “Fences” picked up $ 128,000 in two theaters. Paramount is backing the adaptation of the August Wilson play, with Denzel Washington directing the film and co-starring opposite Viola Davis. It cost just over $ 20 million to make.

“Rogue One” galvanized the box office, but overall ticket sales still fell sharply. That’s because of tough comparisons. Last year, this period hosted “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which shattered records when it opened to $ 248 million.

‘Moana’ Tops The Box Office For Second Weekend In A Row With $28.4 Million

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – “Moana” sailed to the top of the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend. The Disney animated adventure picked up $ 28.4 million to push its stateside haul to $ 119.9 million.

Not that “Moana” faced much in the way of competition. The weekend after Thanksgiving tends to be a slow one for the movie business and this year’s edition was in keeping with that tradition. The only major new release, “Incarnate,” failed to sell many tickets, earning $ 2.6 million and falling short of its expected $ 4 million to $ 5 million opening.

“Incarnate” centers on a scientist (Aaron Eckhart) who enters the mind of an 11-year-old boy to rid him of an evil spirit. The horror film is the latest offering from BH Tilt, which is trying to contain distribution costs by orchestrating more targeted marketing campaigns for certain theatrical releases. “Incarnate” used digital advertising to try to better reach younger horror fans, and debuted on 1,700 screens, substantially fewer theaters than most studio movies unfurl across. It cost $ 5 million to produce.

“Believe,” a faith-based drama about a Christmas pageant, grossed a quiet $ 602,519 from 639 locations. Freestyle Releasing backed the film.

One bright spot was the limited release debut of Fox Searchlight’s “Jackie.” The look at First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s efforts to put on a funeral for John Kennedy that honored her husband and cemented the president’s legacy has earned raves for Natalie Portman’s lead performance and Oscar buzz. It also did strong business in five theaters, picking up $ 275,000 for a $ 55,000 per-screen average.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” the Harry Potter spinoff from Warner Bros., took second place, earning $ 18.5 million to push its domestic gross to $ 183.5 million.

Paramount’s “Arrival” came in third, earning $ 7.3 million. The science-fiction thriller has made $ 73.1 million. Coming in fourth, Paramount’s “Allied” added $ 7 million to its $ 28.9 million gross. Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” rounded out the top five, picking up $ 6.5 million to bring its stateside bounty to $ 215.3 million.

Among Oscar contenders, Amazon Studios and Roadside’s “Manchester by the Sea” expanded nicely, picking up $ 2.4 million after moving from 48 to 156 screens. The acclaimed drama about a grieving janitor has made $ 4.4 million.

A24’s “Moonlight” continued to impress. The coming-of-age story made $ 915,750, pushing its gross to $ 9.9 million.

The domestic box office continues to outpace last year’s revenues, with 2016 up roughly 4% over 2015. However, the weekend totals were off 3% from the same period last year, when the horror comedy “Krampus” debuted to a strong $ 16.3 million.

The movie business continues to hold its collective breath for the opening of “Rogue One: A Star Wars” story on Dec. 16, which is expected to dominate ticket sales for the rest of the year.

“This was the drama-free weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “It’s the calm after the storm and the calm before the storm.”

Lady Gaga Wore A $1 Million Hat At The Victoria’s Secret Show

Looking for a winter hat? This probably isn’t it.

Lady Gaga, hat girl extraordinaire, performed at the the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show wearing a couple of beautiful outfits and a hat worth ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

Yes, that’s right. This one-of-a-kind hat embellished with over 45,000 Swarovski crystals is worth the same amount as these homes or 25,000 of these hats from Zara

The “Million Reasons” singer not only wore said hat but lifted it up off her head like it was some kind of play toy, and held it off to the side in an act of sheer bravery.

The hat was made custom by Gladys Tamez, who has worked quite a bit with Gaga recently on all the hats surrounding the launch of her album “Joanne,” including the iconic pink look from the album’s cover.

According to a release from the brand, the hat is “an homage to the million dollar fantasy bra” and “took 300 hours of labor by 10 craftspeople.”

We’d say a round of Applause is in order for them, no?

‘Moana’ Sails Straight To The Top Of The Box Office With Massive $81.1 Million Opening

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Disney’s “Moana” sailed to the top of the Thanksgiving box office, earning a mighty $ 81.1 million over the five day holiday period and $ 55.5 million for the weekend.

Its success builds on the studio’s hot streak. Disney has released five of the year’s ten highest grossing films, is the leader in terms of market share, and is poised to set a new record for annual grosses. Its hits include “Captain America: Civil War,” “Zootopia,” “Doctor Strange,” “Finding Dory,” “The Jungle Book,” and now “Moana,” with “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” waiting in the wings.
Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis said that the success of “Moana” and others like it justified the company’s decision to make fewer films, while taking bigger bets. Part of that strategy involved shelling out billions of dollars to buy Pixar, Marvel, and LucasFilm, the brands behind “Toy Story,” “The Avengers,” and “Star Wars.”

“We are working with the greatest brands and we’re doing big, broad storytelling that resonates domestically, but has the power to transcend borders and languages and cultures around the world,” said Hollis.

While “Moana” thrived, other new releases weren’t as fortunate. Paramount’s “Allied” earned $ 18 million over the five-day period and $ 13 million for the weekend, a weak result given its $ 85 million budget. The film stars Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard as spies who marry only to have their love affair become entangled in a larger conspiracy. Robert Zemeckis (”Flight”) directed the picture.

Pitt has gone through a bruising divorce from Angelina Jolie that limited his participation in publicizing the film. The actor didn’t do television interviews or magazine spreads, which might have helped raise “Allied’s” profile. The film also drew a much older crowd, with 39 percent of ticket-buyers coming in over the age of 50. Paramount suggested that might mean that its core group of ticket buyers may be slower to embrace the picture, even as it acknowledged that the results were disappointing.

“It’s just okay, and over Thanksgiving you always hope for something a little better than okay,” said Megan Colligan, Paramount’s head of marketing and distribution. “The bright spot is that there’s not a lot of competition in the marketplace over the next few weeks and our audience takes a minute to get to the theater.”

Paramount is coming off a series of bruising failures such as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and “Zoolander 2.” As its parent company, Viacom, prepares to merge with CBS, there are questions about studio chief Brad Grey’s leadership of Paramount. Last month, Grey hosted a preview of the studio’s film slate for media, during which “Allied” was positioned as a key component in Paramount’s revival. The studio did enjoy a hit with “Arrival,” a brainy sci-fi thriller, but after “Allied’s” struggles, it will now have to look to “Fences” and “Silence,” two awards hopefuls from Denzel Washington and Martin Scorsese, to close out the year on a high note.

Broad Green and Miramax’s “Bad Santa 2” also failed to ignite. The follow-up to the 2003 cult comedy “Bad Santa” earned $ 9 million over the five day stretch and $ 6.1 million for the weekend. It cost $ 25 million to produce and had been tracking to open in the mid-teen millions. Broad Green, a newcomer to film distribution, has also been floundering of late. It has released a number of flops and disappointments such as “The Infiltrator,” a thriller with Bryan Cranston, and “99 Homes,” a drama with Andrew Garfield, and has only had one true breakout hit with “A Walk in the Woods,” a Robert Redford comedy that debuted last year.

Warren Beatty’s “Rules Don’t Apply” was roundly rejected by moviegoers. The romantic comedy about Howard Hughes bombed, earning a disastrous $ 2.2 million over five days and $ 1.6 million over the weekend. Beatty hasn’t been on screens in more than a decade and has spent years trying to assemble financing for the film. Hughes, the famously reclusive billionaire was something of an obsession for the actor. To realize the passion projection, Beatty tapped a network of one-percenters that includes Steve Bing, Steven Mnuchin, and Ron Burkle to pull together “Rules Don’t Apply’s” $ 25 million budget. Fox is distributing the picture. Its opening is one of the worst ever recorded for a movie that debuted on more than 2,000 screens.

“Moana” centers on a girl in the Pacific Islands who journeys across the ocean to save her people. Disney did not release a budget, but most animated films cost between $ 150 million to $ 200 million to produce. “Moana” now ranks as the second biggest Thanksgiving debut ever, behind only “Frozen,” which made $ 93.6 million in its first five days.

As many new releases floundered, Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” continued to draw crowds. The Harry Potter spin-off picked up $ 65.8 million for the five-day period and $ 45.1 million in its sophomore weekend. The fantasy adventure has earned $ 156.2 million in two weeks of release.

In limited release, EuropaCorp’s “Miss Sloane” bowed in three theaters where it made $ 63,000, for a per-screen average of $ 21,000. Jessica Chastain stars in the thriller as a driven lobbyist who takes on the gun industry.

The Weinstein Company’s “Lion,” a drama about a man who uses Google Earth to reunite with his long-lost family, debuted to $ 128,368 in four theaters for a $ 32,092 per-screen average.

“Lion” is seen as a potential Oscar winner. One of its chief competitors, Amazon and Roadside’s “Manchester by the Sea,” expanded from four to 48 screens this weekend, where it earned $ 1.3 million. The drama about a grieving janitor has made $ 1.6 million since it opened.

The moral panic-enthusiasts released a statement this week decrying Zales for the new ad that, in a montage of couples and families, includes two women in wedding dresses happily exchanging vows.

“Zales is using public airwaves to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and belittle the sanctity of marriage in an attempt to redefine marriage,” wrote One Million Moms, apparently unaware that the actual definition of marriage already includes same-sex unions.

Their statement instructs fellow bigots to travel to Zales stores and tell managers (who surely have absolutely nothing to do with the company’s advertorial decisions) that they won’t shop there due to the commercial.

There are, of course, some legitimate reasons to criticize Zales, like promoting the huge scam of diamond engagement rings in the first place. But their inclusive commercial isn’t one of them.
