“Hands have been weaving, sewing and giving new shape to cloth. Yet, what if we could play with the shape more freely as if kneading dough or molding clay?” the show notes at Issey Miyake asked.
Never one to shy away from new textile techniques, designer Yoshiyuki Miyamae answered the question by creating looks with a new material, dubbed Dough Dough, whose shape can be modulated easily — with a twist or a crumple. One dress or hat may be transformed in a myriad of ways, as the models on the runway displayed with glee.
Hands also create art, like Issey Miyake’s design team did, painting with traditional Japanese brooms. The resulting patterns were morphed into prints, with some ink-jetted and others woven in jacquards used to construct the clothes. One simple, short-sleeved dress had smatterings of purple, pink, blue and green, reminiscent of an Impressionist painting. Wide-legged trousers were splashed with colorful, vertical lines and dabs, and a skirt came decorated with a patchworklike effect.
This wearable collection had a light, joyful spirit, heightened by whimsical hats made from brooms or the new fabric.

Selfridges Opens the World of Issey Miyake

MADE IN MIYAKE: Selfridges is furthering its relationship with the Japanese label Issey Miyake with a new shop-in-shop that opened in its Designer Galleries space on Tuesday, home to brands including Proenza Schouler, Rosetta Getty and Michael Lo Sordo.
The World of Issey Miyake boutique spans 506 square feet and stocks the brand’s main line as well as the Pleats Please and Bao Bao labels. It offers up to 180 pieces from the pre-fall 2017 and fall 2017 collections; reflecting a 20 percent increase in the retailer’s overall buy from last season.
Olivia McEwan, the store’s designer women’s wear buyer said the increase in the company’s seasonal buy was reflective of customer demand. “In past seasons, there was an increased demand from our customers for ready-to-wear pieces across the main line and Pleats Please that we were unable to satisfy due to stock availability,” said McEwan, adding that the brand is one of the best sellers across the department.

Met to Sell Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake and Other Designer Products Inspired by ‘Manus x Machina’ Exhibition

NEW YORK — The opening of “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is still a few weeks away, but limited-edition designer merchandise inspired by the exhibition has already been selected.

Tokyo’s National Art Center Sets Issey Miyake Retrospective

PLEATS TO MEET YOU: The National Art Center, Tokyo is to mount a retrospective on Japanese designer Issey Miyake next March.
The “Miyake Issey Exhibition: The Work of Miyake Issey” will feature a range of pieces highlighting 45 years of the designer’s work where he explores his “one piece of cloth” philosophy fusing traditional methods with technology.
The National Art Center will showcase Miyake’s designs spanning from the Seventies to the present, including iconic garments ranging from Plastic Body, Rhythm Pleats, Pleats Please, A-POC to his more recent 132_5 concept.
The exhibition is slated to run from March 16 through June 13.
