California Lawmakers Pass Talent Protections Act to Help Models and Entertainers Fight Sexual Harassment and Eating Disorders

FIGHTING HARASSMENT: Models in California now have a little more legal reenforcement thanks to the passage of the Talent Protections Act, which was created to fight sexual harassment and eating disorders. While not designed solely for models, the law is geared for the state’s fashion and entertainment industries. California Gov. Jerry Brown signed it into law Sept. 30 and it will take effect in January.
The Model Alliance, the New York-based organization that champions models’ rights, worked closely with California State Assembly member Marc Levine, detailing models’ experiences to help develop the law and calling for its support.
Under the law, talent agencies must create educational materials about sexual harassment prevention and retaliation, as well as information about good nutrition and eating disorders for adults. For minors starting out in the entertainment industry, they and their parents, or respective legal guardian, will be required to have training in these areas. The law also mandates that information about nutrition be provided to fashion models.
Models are routinely advised to lose weight, according to what is said to be the largest survey to date on eating disorders among professional models. Published last year in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, the study was an effort

Wilhelmina, Major Models Receive Letter Banning Models From Pier 59

PIER 59 BAN: Bill Wackermann, chief executive officer of Wilhelmina International and Nadia Shahrik, vice president of Major Model Management, acknowledged Wednesday that they have each received letters by Federal Express from Pier 59 Studios’ attorney, Mark L. Cortegiano, that their models are no longer permitted to enter Pier 59 Studio, and if they do, his client will prosecute them for trespassing.
As reported, Federico Pignatelli, ceo of Pier 59, Art and Fashion Group and The Industry Model Management, said last Thursday he was banning Wilhelmina and Major Model Management from using his studios, claiming unfair business practices employed by these agencies.
In the letter to Wilhelmina, obtained by WWD, Cortegiano wrote, “While my client recognizes that Wilhelmina International is a large and long-established modeling agency, my client believes that Wilhelmina’s models are subject to financial and contractual duress, and Pier 59 will not work with Wilhelmina under those circumstances. It has come to my clients’ attention that payments to Wilhelmina’s models is only made after significant delay and repeated requests from the models.”
Wackermann said he spoke to Pignatelli for two hours on the phone. “If this is a person who really cared about the models, if a client books a Wilhelmina

Aerie Role Models’ Mothers Appear in New Campaign

Who do role models consider their role models?
For aerie’s role models, who include actress Yara Shahidi, gold medal gymnast Aly Raisman, and curvy model and body activist Iskra Lawrence, the answer is simple: their mothers.

Chloe, Lynn and Aly Raisman.

“We decided to include mothers in the campaign because when we asked our role models who inspires them, their mothers was their number one answer,” said Jen Foyle, aerie global brand president. “And aerie is designed to be worn by any age.”
Shahidi was joined by Keri Shahidi, Raisman posed with her mother, Lynn Raisman and sister Chloe Raisman, and Lawrence took pictures with Wilma Lawrence wearing aerie’s swimwear.

Iskra and Wilma Lawrence

According to Foyle, aerie, which has pushed self-love and empowerment with a no-retouching policy on imagery, these campaigns have had a positive effect on the bottom line. Aerie is up double digits over the last year and saw a large spark within the 30 days of launching the Aerie Real Role Model campaign. The innerwear brand is set to open a store in New York’s SoHo in mid-June.

People Are Loving Project Runway’s Decision to Use Models up to Size 22

Project Runway made a major change this season by including models of all sizes, and Twitter can’t get enough of it.

On Thursday, season 16 of the popular fashion competition series premiered on Lifetime and came with a major twist for designers: Rather than spending all season working with more traditional fashion models, the team would be working with models with a range of body types – from size 2 to 22.

“I believe we should have done already years and years and years ago,” Klum told Entertainment Tonight ahead of the premiere, “So I’m happy though that now this season, we’re starting.”

“This is the real world. Not everyone is, you know, runway figure or what the runway figure used to be,” she added. “You have to dress real people, and real people come in different sizes: short, tall, more voluptuous, skinny. There is many of us, and so a real designer needs to know how to do that. So get with it.”

The designers appeared to be excited about the switch (even if it did throw them off a bit). But users on Twitter were all-around supportive, praising the show for embracing a wider view of the industry.

“I’m so proud that Project Runway is finally doing this,” wrote one user. “Should have been done many years ago. Lovin’ it!!!!!! #loveprojectrunway.”

“Yasss to Project Runway for including so many different types of models and designers!!” tweeted another.

While this is the first time that  Project Runway is requiring designers to use models of different sizes, it’s not the only time that a clothing collection from the television show went beyond the traditional “runway figure” size.

Season 14 winner, Ashley Nell Tipton, designed her final collection for curvy women.

“This was the opportunity that I was given to showcase who I really am as a designer,” Tipton told PEOPLE at the time. “I had to show that this is what I design, and this is what I know.”

Project Runway airs Thursdays (8 p.m. ET) on Lifetime.

Heidi Klum Says the Project Runway Designers ‘Weren’t Too Happy’ About Dressing Models of All Sizes

Project Runway is making a big change this season by including models of all sizes, but Heidi Klum says the designers weren’t all thrilled.

“They kind of went like this, ‘Ah?’ ” Klum, 44, tells Entertainment Tonight, while making a displeased face. “A lot of them actually weren’t too happy about it.”

The supermodel and host points out that the designers need to be realistic about who they’re dressing.

“This is the real world. Not everyone is, you know, runway figure or what the runway figure used to be,” she says. “You have to dress real people, and real people come in different sizes: short, tall, more voluptuous, skinny. There is many of us, and so a real designer needs to know how to do that. So get with it.”

And Klum says she’s been wanting to include models of different sizes on the show.

“I believe we should have done already years and years and years ago. So I’m happy though that now this season, we’re starting,” she says.

While Project Runway hasn’t required all of the designers to use models of different sizes before, the season 14 winner, Ashley Nell Tipton, designed her final collection for curvy women.

“This was the opportunity that I was given to showcase who I really am as a designer,” Tipton told PEOPLE at the time. “I had to show that this is what I design, and this is what I know.”

The 16th season of Project Runway premieres Aug. 17 on Lifetime.

Poppy Delevingne Signs to WME and IMG Models

WME and IMG Models has a new client. The talent agency revealed today that it has signed model and actress Poppy Delevingne.
“I’m constantly looking for opportunities that will continue to allow me to grow, explore and elevate my acting and modeling careers,” Delevingne said in a statement. “WME and IMG Models are masters of strategy — my hopes for progression truly resonate with them as they think of ways to drive me further.”
Delevingne, 31, has previously been the face of Chanel and Louis Vuitton and has worked with brands such as Jaguar Land Rover, Longchamp, Montblanc and Shiseido. She is the first-ever Jo Malone London Girl, and hosted an event for the brand with fellow model-turned-singer Karen Elson earlier this year. “My mother wore Jo Malone when I was growing up, so it has always been woven into the fabric of my life,” Delevingne previously told WWD.
She recently made her big screen debut in Guy Ritchie’s “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” remake, in which she appeared opposite Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law. “I’m kind of an old-school chick. You Can Leave Your Shoes On: New Republic x Mark McNairy Shows 2018 Collection on Nude Models

A machine gun-wielding model parades across the screen of the Crosby Street Hotel’s subterranean screening room in New York on Tuesday. The seductive female is clad in nothing more than a pair of New Republic by Mark McNairy shoes from their 2018 men’s collection and, to maintain modesty, two thick black censorship bars bouncing along with each effervescent step.
This 12-minute film produced by the men’s wear designer featured a parade of women in the buff displaying affordably priced footwear from slip-on sandals to rose-colored boat shoes.
“It’s about shoes so I didn’t want to dress models in clothes to take away from the shoes so I decided to use naked people,” explained McNairy in his unhurried North Carolinian drawl. “Then I decided people would rather see naked girls than naked guys — and that’s just it.”
Once immersed in preppy design, the former creative director of J. Press has in recent years eschewed the Ivy League-inspired aesthetic he carried on while at the venerable American label.
“With respect to the heritage and tradition, I am by no means Ivy League,” continued the 56-year-old. “I appreciate elements of [that style], but I like workwear, military, punk and hippies.”

Study Says Plus-Size Models Are Good For Our Mental Health

We shouldn’t need science to convince us that representation of diverse body types in the media is a good thing, but science just made a pretty solid case for it anyway.

A new study published by Florida State University last week titled, “Is plus size equal? The positive impact of average and plus-sized media fashion models on women’s cognitive resource allocation, social comparisons, and body satisfaction,” found that women tend to experience deeper body satisfaction and retain memory of plus-size models more than when they see imagery of average size and thinner models.

The study, co-authored by assistant professors Russell Clayton and Jessica Ridgway, monitored 49 college women who struggle with body satisfaction. After showing the women images of plus-size, average and thinner models, the positive reaction and takeaway was greater on visuals of average models, and even moreso on plus-size models.

“Women reported the greatest body satisfaction and the least amount of social comparisons when viewing plus-size models, but body satisfaction decreased and social comparisons increased when viewing average sized followed by thin size models,” the study said.

A post shared by PRECIOUS LEE (@preciousleexoxo) on

It also pointed out, unsurprisingly, that exposure to “unrealistic-sized media models” has a negative effect on the consumer’s “mental and physical health, including experiencing lower body satisfaction.”

When you consider not only the success that models like Ashley Graham and Precious Lee have seen in recent years, but also the increasing amount of brands opting to include a diverse range of body shapes and sizes in their campaigns and the overwhelmingly positive reaction those advertisements have garnered from consumers, the data here is not all that surprising.

A post shared by Denise Bidot (@denisebidot) on

Still, in an industry fraught with a lack of diversity and at times, questionable motives from brands which might be attempting to capitalize on and take advantage of the “trendy” body positive movement, it’s encouraging to see that inclusivity is actually accomplishing a way more important goal: Giving women confidence, providing them with role models they can relate to and prompting a more positive relationship with their own bodies.

“Research has overwhelmingly found that exposure to unrealistically sized media models results in women reporting less satisfaction with their overall appearance,” the study said.

Here’s hoping this development gives brands yet another reason to perpetuate a more realistic message to their consumers.

Newly Single Leonardo DiCaprio Surrounded By A Bevy Of Models In Cannes

Looks like Leonardo DiCaprio is doing just fine after that breakup.

The newly single actor, who split with his model girlfriend Nina Agdal earlier this month, was spotted in Cannes on Thursday at the amfAR Gala, surrounded by a bevy of beautiful women including Bella Hadid and Rita Ora. DiCaprio is known for his penchant for models, having previously dated Gisele Bundchen, Bar Refaeli, Erin Heatherton, Toni Garrn and Kelly Rohrbach, so these photos are, shall we say, priceless.

DiCaprio and Agdal dated for over a year before their split was announced last week. Shortly after the reveal, the actor was spotted with friend and fellow bachelor Tobey Maguire at LA hotspots The Peppermint Club and Avenue LA. Maguire was also in attendance at the amfAR event in France’s Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. He was photographed onstage with Chris Tucker, Uma Thurman, Will Smith and Jessica Chastain during the soiree.

We can imagine Tobey sending Leo a text about letting loose in Cannes, to which Leo responds: You mean tonight, Boo Boo? Club-wise?

Head over to the Daily Mail to see more photos of DiCaprio in his element.

This Model’s Cellulite Photo Will Inspire You To Take Your Own

Body Positive Hero is a series that celebrates the people who make the fashion industry ― and the world ― a more inclusive, body-positive place.

Model Charli Howard was already one of our body positive icons, thanks to her inclusive “All Woman Project” and the inspired way she responded when a modeling agency dropped her because of her weight.

But we’ve never felt quite so inclined to celebrate our own bodies the way we do after looking at this photo she shared of her backside, cellulite and all.

Howard posted the photo and its accompany message on Monday, even though she said it scared her. She explained that between the women she saw in magazines when she was growing up and her “envy” of girls in her class who didn’t have cellulite, she began to feel like it was “shameful, or an oddity.”

It’s hard to picture someone like Howard, who spends time stressing the importance of self-love and diversity within the fashion industry, ever feeling like she needed to hide something about her body ― and it’s refreshingly honest.

She admits that it’s not her favorite part of her body, but realizes now that cellulite is nothing to be ashamed of (like her “old pal Kendrick Lamar,” she points out it is totally natural).

The post has so far racked up over 4,000 likes and more than 100 comments, which has made her feel less alone, she told The Huffington Post.

“Even though cellulite is normal, it’s always nice being assured that you’re not the only girl with it!” Howard said. “If I can help one girl feel comfortable in her skin, that’s all that matters.”

We have a feeling Howard’s inspired far more than just one girl to love the skin she’s in.

‘Black Models Matter’ Protest Blasts Paris Fashion Week For Lack Of Diversity

Looks like Paris Fashion Week’s most importent moment happened off the runway.

Indi Irvin, a U.K.-based model signed with MSA Models, protested outside the Balenciaga show on Saturday, holding up a sign that read “Les Modèles Noirs Importent,” or as it’s translated, “Black Models Matter.” The signage spoke to the brand’s historical lack of diversity on the runway.

MODELS SPEAK UP

A post shared by Indi (@eyeoccupy2k17) on

The arena was fitting ― Refinery29 reports there were only four models of color of the 47 models who walked in the Balenciaga show (which was actually an improvement over past seasons) ― but her protest speaks to the event as a whole. As New York Fashion Week has made slow but sure strides to be more inclusive, Paris, Milan and London have continued to come up short.

Irvin explained on Instagram that she was planning to protest Lanvin or Celine, or any show that “was big enough to grab the attention back to the cause,” and it “just worked out best at Balenciaga.” She also explained why she felt like now was the right time to speak out.

A post shared by Phil Oh (@mrstreetpeeper) on

“2017 was a big year not only politically but also for my modeling career as it was my first season in the European market,” she wrote. “It is very different here compared to the NYC I’m used too [sic]. February was black history and march is women’s so it just felt right.”

A post shared by Melodie Jeng (@melodiejeng) on

A few days prior, Irvin pointed out that Gucci, which showed at Milan Fashion Week on Feb. 22, featured just 17 models of color out of 119 total models. “It’s 2017,” she wrote.

A post shared by Indi (@eyeoccupy2k17) on

The protest caught the attention of many news outlets and street style photographers, including Phil Oh (Mr. Street Peeper) and Melodie Jeng, and with good reason. While Balenciaga did not return a request by The Huffington Post for comment at the time of publication, we applaud Irvin for taking matters into her own hands in the name of inclusivity.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

Models Team Up To Demand Diversity At Fashion Week

At this point, there’s no honest way to talk about fashion week without also talking about diversity. While the mainstream is slowly but surely widening its standards of beauty, high fashion runways are noticeably taking longer to adjust.

Now the pressure to become more inclusive feels especially palpable. On Tuesday, 43 models wrote an open letter and an accompanying petition demanding diversity and safe health practices at New York Fashion Week later this month. As of Wednesday morning, over 1,000 other industry insiders and members of the public have signed it.

Their “#DearNYFW” letter follows the publication of research that confirms what many people in the industry already know to be true: “that unhealthy weight control practices are a serious problem in the industry. Too often, models are being pressured to jeopardize their health and safety as a prerequisite for employment.”

Published in partnership with the National Eating Disorders Association and the industry advocacy group Model Alliance, the letter and petition also call on designers to prioritize diversity ― an area that’s improved in recent seasons but is still a glaring problem.

The demand is not specific to the inclusion of varied bodies, the letter notes, stating its authors will be looking out for “diversity of race, size, age, and gender status, and we hope to see diversity within and across all of those categories.”

Body positivity advocate Iskra Lawrence, who has three million followers on Instagram, is among the 43 models who have signed the letter. The hope is that power in numbers helps spread the message.

“Through our social media platforms, which collectively reach millions of people, we will recognize the industry leaders who step up to this challenge,” the letter reads.

Also on the list are Sabina Karlsson, a model who walked in the Chromat and Christian Siriano shows last season, and Madison Schill, who left the modeling world in 2013 and is producing the upcoming body image documentary “Straight/Curve.”

“I remember being afraid of going into my agency to grab comp cards during the hectic casting season ― afraid my hips would be too big, or that the steps I’d been advised to take in restricting my development would have shown up on my skin overnight,” Schill told The Huffington Post. “I don’t want other girls to have to go through that, I want them to realize that health is never something we should deny ourselves in order to book a show, and that they can be appreciated and loved and beautiful when they aren’t depriving themselves, too.”

Here’s hoping designers keep the message in mind for many seasons to come.

Models of the Visual System

Models of the Visual System

Some of the best vision scientists in the world in their respective fields have contributed to chapters in this book. They have expertise in a wide variety of fields, including bioengineering, basic and clinical visual science, medicine, neurophysiology, optometry, and psychology. Their combined efforts have resulted in a high quality book that covers modeling and quantitative analysis of optical, neurosensory, oculomotor, perceptual and clinical systems. It includes only those techniques and models that have such fundamentally strong physiological, control system, and perceptual bases that they will serve as foundations for models and analysis techniques in the future. The book is aimed first towards seniors and beginning graduate students in biomedical engineering, neurophysiology, optometry, and psychology, who will gain a broad understanding of quantitative analysis of the visual system. In addition, it has sufficient depth in each area to be useful as an updated reference and tutorial for graduate and post-doctoral students, as well as general vision scientists.

Identification, Equivalent Models, and Computer Algebra: Statistical Modeling and Decision Science

Identification, Equivalent Models, and Computer Algebra: Statistical Modeling and Decision Science

Identification, Equivalent Models, and Computer Algebra provides information pertinent to computer algebra. This book presents a brief discussion of the commutation matrix, an operator that plays a role when derivatives have to be evaluated involving symmetric matrices. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the link between identification of a parameter and the existence of a consistent estimator, and the link between identification of a model and the rank of a Jacobian matrix. This text then describes an algorithm for the determination of the exact rank of a parametrized matrix. Other chapters consider the identification in the simultaneous equation model. This book discusses as well the identification assessment in confirmatory factor analysis, a problem related to the simultaneous equations model. The final chapter deals with various computer programs that the enclosed diskette contains. This book is a valuable resource for readers who are interested in computer algebra.

Kylie Jenner Models Sexy Neon Bikini (with Her Name on It!) from New Topshop Swimwear Line

Kylie Jenner should dedicate her first book to set life selfies, because no one shares more sexy behind-the-scenes snaps than the 18-year-old social media dynamo. And she proved that to be very true on Wednesday, giving fans a peek at the new Kendall + Kylie swimsuit line for Topshop!

Kylie Jenner neon Topshop swimsuit selfieKylie Jenner/Instagram

Kylie modeled a sneak peek at the swim collection, snapping a mirror selfie while wearing a sporty neon green bikini from the line, complete with ‘Kendall + Kylie’ emblazoned across the bottoms. The cheekily-cut design checks off all the must-haves for a KarJenner swimsuit: minimal coverage, bright color and strappy bottoms that are bound to leave some very sexy tan lines.

“Shooting Kendall&Kylie swim for TopShop. Coming soooon,” she captioned the photo, before also adding a video from set where she’s donning a sportier, zipper-front coral design.

Her latest bikini snap comes less than a week after she posed for Instagram in a marigold two-piece that barely contained her kurves. And seeing how summer hasn’t even started yet, we’re preparing for daily bikini photos in the coming months.

But despite all her scantily clad social media snaps, Kylie told PeopleStyle she feels best when she’s totally un-glam.

“[It’s] Probably right after I shower,” she shared with us. “Right after you shower you feel super clean and fresh. That’s when I feel the best.”

As for her biggest beauty concern, the star is very conscious of sun-damage.

“I have really sensitive skin and a lot of freckles, so I can tell every year, I get more freckles on my arms,” she said. “That’s why she wears sunscreen everywhere. It’s really important, [my sister] Khloé [Kardashian] told me that.”

Considering all the time she spends in a two-piece, we’re glad the star practices safe sun.

Are you excited for the new Kendall + Kylie swimsuit line for Topshop? What do you think of Kylie’s sexy neon two-piece.

New Agency — State — Aims to Showcase Models’ Personalities

Rene Gonzalez, a seasoned model agent who spent years working between Wilhelmina and IMG, wanted to create a modeling agency that catered to a new generation of models in a changing industry, one in which a model’s personality — and social media following — has become more important than ever.
On Sept. 9, Gonzalez will launch State, a full-service New York-based agency that aims to not only rep models, but also to create role models. “We’re calling ourselves digital managers,” he said. “What we would like to do is let kids know that yes, you can be a model, and yes, it can be glamorous, but there are other things behind it.”
State will support its clients’ images but also their talents and interests with a focus on social and digital content. In terms of what he is looking for in new talent, Gonzalez cited diversity and depth. “We really want models that have something to say,” he said. “When we do interviews, we ask what they’re doing in school. We’re about building who you are. The criteria is open for us; it’s about what makes you interesting to a larger audience.”
The agency represents about 30 models. Among them is Arizona native

Found: This Is Where All the Male Plus-Size Models Are

The conversation surrounding plus-size models has been going at a mile a minute as of late—think Melissa McCarthy’s comments about getting plus-size clothing displayed in stores more prominently and top models like Amber Tolliver saying “clothing options shouldn’t be different for curvy women.” Yet until very recently, it’s been all about women. Most agencies include divisions specially for the category and are supporting an industry that’s beginning to cast curvy beauties in mainstream campaigns. While it certainly all seems like progress, there’s an interesting catch: just where are all the male plus-size models?

The answer would appear to be Germany! It’s where there are multiple agencies with special categories (and the majority of the men are busy working).

A model in Ralph Lauren’s Big & Tall line

“The market seems to be different in Germany,” Curve Model Management owner Mona Schulze told The Guardian. “Customers want to be able to identify with the models, they want them to mirror them.”

Men need to be around a size 42 to be considered plus, though that’s not a term that the agency endorses. Schulze says she scouts a lot on the street since men aren’t as likely as women to pop in for consideration; when she sees a guy with potential, she uses terms like “standard” and “everyman” to discuss his build.

Billy Reid’s spring 2015 runway shows what the typical male runway model looks like

A check of the top agencies in the United States doesn’t reveal any plus-size category for men. Fitness categories include males who are beefier than runway models but still appear super in shape. Jermain Hollman, 6’5 with a 36-inch waist, is considered plus-size but, hello—he’s got some serious abs going on in his Facebook profile pic. Thirty-two inches is the average waist size for working male models, and while those in the biz say they haven’t seen things in the past, there’s hope that the positive attention being shined on women’s plus-size divisions will affect men as well.

This Is How Many Plus-Size Models Appear In September Issue Fashion Editorials

Sometimes it seems as though the fashion industry is more inclusive than ever before. In the past year, there’s been an increase in the number of mature models fronting ad campaigns and more people with disabilities on the runways of New York Fashion Week. Right now, eight black women are featured on September magazine covers

But there are definitely major strides to be made

We flipped through the September issue fashion editorials of seven major magazines — Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, W, Elle, Marie Claire, InStyle and Cosmopolitan — to see if we could find any plus-size models.

The results weren’t great.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average waist size for women aged 20 and over is 37.5 inches. Depending on which retail store you consult, this translates to a slightly different pant size, but all of them qualify as plus-size. (At Gap, a 37.5 inch waist is between a size 18 and a size 20, at Coldwater Creek it translates to roughly a size 16. At Lane Bryant, it’s about a size 18.)

So, if the average woman is plus-size, why are there zero plus-size models in these fashion editorials?

Yeah, we’re not really sure either.

Sampled-Data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems

Sampled-Data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems

Sampled-data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems provides a fresh new look at a subject with which many researchers may think themselves familiar. Rather than emphasising the differences between sampled-data and continuous-time systems, the authors proceed from the premise that, with modern sampling rates being as high as they are, it is becoming more appropriate to emphasise connections and similarities. The text is driven by three motives: the ubiquity of computers in modern control and signal-processing equipment means that sampling of systems that really evolve continuously is unavoidable; although superficially straightforward, sampling can easily produce erroneous results when not treated properly; and the need for a thorough understanding of many aspects of sampling among researchers and engineers dealing with applications to which they are central. The authors tackle many misconceptions which, although appearing reasonable at first sight, are in fact either partially or completely erroneous. They also deal with linear and nonlinear, deterministic and stochastic cases. The impact of the ideas presented on several standard problems in signals and systems is illustrated using a number of applications. Academic researchers and graduate students in systems, control and signal processing will find the ideas presented in Sampled-data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems to be a useful manual for dealing with sampled-data systems, clearing away mistaken ideas and bringing the subject thoroughly up to date. Researchers in statistics and economics will also derive benefit from the reworking of ideas relating a model derived from data sampling to an original continuous system.

Exclusive: This Documentary on Plus-Size Models Will Change the Way You Think About Your Body

Plus-size fashion is having more than a moment, it’s on the brink of a revolution—and models are taking on a leading role.

From Ashley Graham‘s Sports Illustrated ad to Candice Huffine‘s Pirelli Calendar slot, the community has been on the fashion industry’s lips all year. In the midst of such pronounced media attention, producer and former model Jessica Lewis is getting ready to debut Straight/Curve, a documentary that delves into the world of plus-size modeling.

“This generation of models is ready to usher in a new definition of beauty—one that is all inclusive and supports positive body ideals and self acceptance,” said Lewis, who has spent over 15 years as a straight-size and plus-size model. “The fashion industry needs to be reflective and representative of the diversity that exists in present day society.”

Straight/Curve, set to release next summer, aims to examine and redefine the beauty standards put forth by the fashion industry, as they relate to the plus-size fashion. Most importantly, it will be talking about issues often pushed aside. Multiple people will be speaking about sample sizes and how adding a size 14 into circulation will help get diversely sized models in magazines. Agents will be talking about their move towards eliminating plus-size boards and placing all models together. Models will be talking about making plus-size inclusion a non-event in the media.

Straight-Curve-Models

Clockwise from top left: Eva Kay, Natalie Torres, Jessica Lewis, Sarah Hartshorne, and Sabina Karlsson being interviewed for Straight/Curve.

The film is the most insider look at the industry so far, going behind the scenes of New York’s plus-size fashion industry, with a focus on top models, agents, clients, and photographers. The trailer is already loaded with power players, but there are some top models being kept a surprise… So far, we know it will follow industry influencers, including Kate Dillon, Sophie T. Simmons, and Jennie Runk, among others (including this Glamour writer!).

Overall, Straight/Curve aims to expose the complex relationship between the fashion industry, mainstream media, and body image in society. “When, how, and why did size zero become the norm when two thirds of women are considered ‘plus-size’ sitting between a size 10 to 14?” Director Jenny McQuaile told Glamour. “Our documentary will examine this question. There’s always been a complex relationship between the fashion industry, the media, and body image and we’re finally making a film that will investigate that.”

Here’s en exclusive look at the trailer:

Plus-Size Models on What They’re Tired of Hearing and Where the Conversation Should Go

Plus-Model-Collage
Top: Denise Bidot, Amber Tolliver, Bree Warren, Georgina Burke, Marquita Pring, and Felicity Hayward.
Bottom: Georgia Pratt, Jennie Runk, Justine Legault, Julie Henderson, Gia Genevieve, and Emme.

Are we talking about plus-size fashion in a productive way or are we stuck in a rut?

Before you think, “But plus-size fashion and its models have been getting lots of press lately,” consider this: Many of the industry’s top models insist that we have a long way to go to change the perception of what plus-size fashion is really about. Over and over, these models get asked the same tired questions. (Ahem: What do you think of the term plus-size?)

If we want to see the conversation surrounding plus-size fashion evolve and grow beyond a single facet, we have to stop asking its models the narrow questions. Model Felicity Hayward points out, “The more people keep asking those questions, the less we’re going to be able to be equal.”

So, we asked 12 top models about what they’re tired of being asked in interviews and how we can break out of the stunted cycle we’re in with regard to plus-size modeling and fashion. Take a look:

What are the challenges of perception that you face?

Denise Bidot: [I get asked if] I care if people call me plus-size…I don’t have any problem with you calling me plus-size, curvy, voluptuous, big—I don’t really give a damn. We represent plus-size women, whether or not some of the models are smaller or larger.

Amber Tolliver: The question of should a plus-size or curvy woman be wearing certain things is infuriating. When it comes to straight-size fashion, any and all styles are fair game. Clothing options shouldn’t be different for curvy women. They should be given options and not told they can’t wear something before it’s even designed.

Bree Warren: People will ask if it’s my full-time job. What a lot of people don’t understand is that there are a lot of working models that have done, and will continue to do, very well. They don’t really understand that plus-size models work a lot.

Georgina Burke: [I get asked] how I stay in shape. It’s almost like they’re asking, “Do you actually work out?” There’s a big thing right now with all the plus-size girls showing that they’re working out and I feel like all of the interviews are saying, “Oh you don’t just sit around and eat burgers, you actually exercise?”

Marquita Pring: [I get asked if] I ever considered being “skinny” or if I have wanted to go to the straight-size world. As if the way I am is unattractive or it’s not as good as being a skinny girl, therefore, shouldn’t I want to be just like them? Never once in my career was that an option for me—not even at 15-years-old when I started—and I have never been interested in being smaller.

Felicity Hayward: [People] asking if we’ve had any negativity regarding being plus-size. People assume that because I’m bigger, I have experienced people asking me to lose weight or if I’ve worked with people that are horrible to me because I’m bigger…. The more people keep asking those questions, the less we’re going to be able to be equal.

Now, hear what they say on where the conversation surrounding plus-size fashion and modeling needs to go:

Georgia Pratt: It’s great when we can be included in conversations and questions that go beyond positive body image. The conversation needs to start opening up and approaching people such as designers, editors, photographers and other creative decision makers and influencers of the fashion industry.

Jennie Runk: It’s really important to get a message out to young girls and kids. They need to know that not only do we have Photoshop working in our favor, we have a professional hairstylist, makeup artist, and photographer…. The picture that these kids end up seeing looks—in no way—what we actually look like.

Justine Legault: At this point, I’m trying to have people get to know me as a person— that’s where I’m at in my career. [For instance], what would I recommend or say to women or young girls?

Julie Henderson: We should be focusing on how people feel when they look at us. Not “She’s too skinny or she’s too big or she’s plus-size or she’s black or she’s white.” People should say, “This is a beautiful woman. I recognize myself in her.”

Gia Genevieve: Plus-size models should also be shown in a glamorous way. I don’t see a lot of plus-size models being shown in a very sexy way, and we are very sexy. [What] I’m pushing for is that there needs to be more glamour in plus-size modeling—and less toned-down, commercial [shots].

Emme: For 20 years I’ve been wondering, How do we get the department stores to get [contemporary clothes] to size 18? They could really make much more money if they would buy more fashionable things in the size category of 12’s, 14’s, and 16’s. [I work with] the junior class at Syracuse University’s Fashion Design program to create clothing on size 2, 4, 6 forms and in the same class on 16, 18, 22 forms. We’re teaching student designers to design for all!

What do you think is most important to discuss about plus-size fashion and modeling?

Models Of All Sizes Strip Down In The Name Of Body Diversity In Icelandic Glamour

The ladies of ALDA, a coalition of plus-size models whose name translates to “wave” in Icelandic, are making a real splash in Icelandic Glamour.

alda

Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring, Julie Henderson, Inga Eiriksdottir and Danielle Redman are the five women hoping to change the perception of beauty in the fashion industry through ALDA. They’re currently being celebrated in an eight-page spread in the second-ever issue of Iceland’s edition of Glamour magazine, each looking downright gorgeous wearing looks from denim to birthday suit.

alda

“It was so much fun! The naked shot happened by accident,” Henderson told The Huffington Post. “We were waiting for Ashley to get there and started fooling around! It is so amazing when all of us get together. We can go weeks without seeing one another, so when we do it makes us all so happy. There is a special magic and chemistry when we are all on set together.”

But there’s way more to love about these ladies than their good looks. The group, which came together after its members’ former modeling agency dissolved its plus-size division, has an important message of empowerment and self-love to share. Eiriksdottir explained their mission to Glamour, then provided a translation from print to HuffPost:

Even if it might sound strange since we [are models], which is a lot about the outside looks, we are more interested in building strong self-esteem in women rather then just focusing on the looks. … In the last few years, we have organized various events that are about getting women together to do healthy things for the body and soul, while raising money for those in need and giving back. … We started working with “Girl Up,” which is a United Nations [Foundation campaign]. The focus is to empower young girls to become leaders and raise money for girls in need around the world.

final alda

There’s certainly a long way to go on the road to a more inclusive industry, but these women sure are paving the way.

How One Designer Is Using ‘Role Models Not Runway Models’ To Empower Women

While New York Fashion Week featured many famous faces during its opening night on Feb. 12, it was the lesser-known ones that may have made the biggest impact.

Designer Carrie Hammer’s runway show “Role Models Not Runway Models” was a highlight of NYFW for the second year in a row. “Role Models Not Runway Models” featured female CEOs, writers, actresses and entrepreneurs.

“I think it’s important that women understand that beauty comes from power, personality, and accomplishments,” Hammer said. “The women we put on the runway are all at the top of their respective fields.”

The models included Brandthropologie CEO Billee Howard, Nexus founder Rachel Cohen Gerrol, senior editor of Bustle.com Marie Ospina and Director of Public Affairs at Coca-Cola Missy Owens.

In 2014, Hammer’s show featured the first model in a wheelchair in NYFW and this year she included “American Horror Story” actress Jamie Brewer, the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway.

“I think this challenges what we’ve been seeing for way too long. Uniformity. It’s time to see not just diversity — but reality,” Hammer said.

Pin-Ups for Vets Documentary Models Glam It Up While Raising Funds for Their Fellow Veterans

2014-11-05-10689769_717822671628589_577319473378011176_n.jpg

Pin-Ups for Vets Founder Gina Elise, Navy Vet Buddy Watson, Julia Reed Nichols

Veterans Day is a time to remember the past as well as the ongoing courage and sacrifice of our enlisted men and women. It’s also a time to pitch in and help. An inspired woman, lovely Gina Elise, and her team are releasing a documentary, Pin-Ups for Vets, that honors them all. Produced by TV4 Entertainment and created by southern California-based Elise, the documentary, which will start airing on YouTube’s All Warrior Network (November 11), is an adjunct to Elise’s very tasteful but sexy annual Pin-Ups for Vets Calendar whose proceeds go to benefit hospitalized veterans.

Having been published since 2007, the 2015 calendar features for the first time 12 veterans including nine female veterans and three male veterans. The female pin-up models were photographed in classic 1940s pin-up style surrounded by retro airplanes and automobiles. The photos, taken by April Smith, brilliantly recapture the authentic feel of the original WWII pin-up depictions, which were painted on planes or hung up as pictures in barracks, and which reminded our troops of what they were fighting for back home.

The new documentary captures the behind-the-scenes action of the 2015 calendar Pin-Ups for Vets shoot, and Elise explains, “One of the veterans, Shannon Stacy, was a Naval Flight surgeon and is now an ER doctor! Jovane Henry was a model in Japan for two years before joining the Marine Corps. They are all very inspirational individuals, and by asking them to be models is a great way to start telling their amazing stories. They are superheroes to me! I want the rest of America to learn about our Vets, generally, how resilient they are, and be inspired by them!”

2014-11-05-RickyRybaNavyGina.png

Navy Vet Ricky Ryba and Gina Elise with 1954 Mercury Monterey – Photo by April Smith

Elise’s inspiration began in 2006 when she heard stories about severely wounded service members returning from their deployments in Iraq but finding many healthcare programs overcrowded or underfunded. She continues,

There was also a large number of aging Veterans from past wars that were entering the hospitals to add to the patient load. I wanted to do something to honor my grandfather’s Army service during WWII, and I had always loved the beautiful nose art on the WWII military planes that depicted beautiful women. I took my love of that art form to produce the first pin-up fundraiser calendar that we sold in 2007, hoping to purchase equipment for the VA hospitals. Equipment always gets worn out and we thought this was the best way to spend our funds — to buy brand new rehabilitation equipment for our veterans.

Determined Elise and her team have produced nine calendars, and visited over 6,000 ill and injured vets at their bedsides in 48 Veteran facilities nationwide and in Germany. In the process, they have donated over $ 50,000 dollars worth of new equipment for VA and Military hospitals nationwide.

2014-11-05-JovaneHenry.png

USMC Vet Jovane Henry with 1941 Ryan PT-22 “Recruit” plane – Photo by April Smith

USMC veteran Jovane Henry, explains her own reason for getting involved:

I was aware that pin-ups have been a mainstay in military culture since WWII. I’d been a model professionally in Tokyo but I’d never done pin-up style posing. Contrary to popular belief, the posing was not overtly sexual by any means. I felt a sense of pride that I was joining a genre of women who had boosted the morale of troops and encouraged them to remember what they were fighting for back home. As a woman veteran, I felt beautiful and empowered in my feminine energy — which isn’t exactly encouraged in a military environment. And as a veteran, it was even more rewarding. There are so many ways to serve the community, and this calendar was just one way for me to give back. The look on the wounded warriors’ faces that we visit is already great, but when they learn that I’m a veteran and we have that instant connection, it’s even better. I am still motivating and supporting my fellow troops, just with red lipstick and without the combat boots!

2014-11-05-ShannonStacyNavy.png

Navy Vet Shannon Stacy with 1940 Stearman – Photo by April Smith

In many ways, Shannon Stacy and Jovane Henry and the other terrific Pin-Ups for Vets models — who ranged from Navy Seabee to combat Correspondent and Flight Surgeon — honor the past contributions of Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Jane Russell and Gene Tierney to the military cause. But they also honor our continuing fascination with the 1940s and 1950s. Elise adds, “Retro style is incredibly flattering to the female figure, it accentuates all the best places. The make-up style isn’t that hard to achieve — apart from the clothes, all you need is red lipstick and cat eye liner. Simple, yet so classic.”

Milky PinUps: AurumLight Studio Splashes Milk On Models, We Begin Search For Cookies (PHOTOS)

We’ll never cry over spilt milk again.

AurumLight Studio, a London-based conceptual photography business, is making a splash with its fresh take on old pin-up photos. Pouring milk on models sounds easy — but photographer Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz captures the liquid in such a way that it looks like a perfectly crafted dress.

PHOTO (More below):
milk models

Plenty of his galleries are more serious in nature, but the former architect thought he’d have some fun with these ladies, who he’s putting in a calendar — thankfully — coming soon.

“This time I thought it will be cool to approach the liquid theme in a more relaxed and funny way,” Wieczorkiewicz writes on his blog. “So we threw some colors into the mix and came up with a personal Milky PinUp tribute to my favorite pin-up style artists.”

You can learn how to Milky PinUp, too. He’ll be touring in the United States in 2014 to teach his wholesome craft. In the meantime, check out his Facebook page, his high-resolution shots, and the photos below.
