2-Month-Old Nearly Loses Toes After Strand of Mom’s Hair Cuts Off His Circulation for Hours

A 10-week-old boy is recovering after nearly losing four of his toes when a strand of his mother’s hair became tangled on his foot, cutting off the baby’s circulation for at least 12 hours, his mother says.

“It was a horrible experience,” Alex Upton, 26, said of the ordeal that landed her infant son, Ezra, in the hospital last month.

Upton, of Paignton, England, said she was awakened by Ezra’s cries, and became confused when the baby wouldn’t drink any milk. Then, Upton said, she noticed that four toes on Ezra’s foot were red and swollen.

The concerned mom of two looked closer and saw that a single strand of her long, brown hair had become wrapped around his toes, and was cutting off the baby’s blood circulation.

“It must have been on there for 12 to 14 hours because I only noticed it in the morning,” Upton said. “I pulled at it and realized how tightly it’d wrapped around his toes. It’d tangled around three or four of them. I felt awful.”

Upton tried for more than 15 minutes to remove the tangled hair, noting that she used a pair of tweezers to ultimately cut the strand away. She took the boy to a local hospital where a doctor gave her antibacterial cream for Ezra’s damaged toes.

Upton said she feared that Ezra’s toes would have been removed had she not found the hair in time.

“I’m normally really safety conscious with the kids, but I had never expected this to happen to us,” she said, noting that Ezra is back to his “normal” self.

“My advice to any parents would be when you’re changing or putting on socks, or even getting them out of the bath, check thoroughly and make sure you turn clothing inside out first to remove any stray hair.”

A hair tourniquet can occur when babies even just a strand of hair ends up in places like a diaper, or sock without a parent noticing, according to Today. The strand can wrap around a baby’s toe, finger, or umbilical stump so tight that it can cut through the skin and cut off blood circulation.

“Hair easily gets stuck in things when they’ve been in the washing machine too, so it’s important to check,” Upton said.

Internal Investigators Claim Mom’s Allegation that Daycare Waxed Toddler’s Eyebrows is ‘Unsubstantiated’

The organization that runs the daycare center at which a mom alleged her 2-year-old daughter had her eyebrows waxed without her permission says an internal investigation showed the claim to be “unsubstantiated.”

On Feb. 1, Alyssa Salgado, 19, of Kennewick, Washington, took to Facebook to express her outrage that workers at the daycare center her 2-year-old daughter attends had allegedly waxed the child’s brows.

“I saw a red mark in between her eyebrows,” Salgado wrote. “I think it’s a scratch but as soon as a get home I get a closer look these WOMEN decided to WAX MY DAUGHTERS uni brow.”

“THEY HAD NO RIGHT TO TOUCH MY DAUGHTER AT ALL,” her post continued.

In a media statement dated Feb. 7, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton and Franklin Counties said that it had completed its “internal fact-finding” after receiving two complaints at the childcare center it operates for the Pasco School District at Columbia Basin College (CBC), where Salgado attends high school and sends her child to daycare.

“After conducting staff interviews, reviewing documentation and inspecting the physical environment, the Boys & Girls Club has found these accusations to be unsubstantiated,” the statement reads.

“The Washington State Department of Early Learning (the licensing agency for childcare centers) continues to investigate the complaint with the full support and cooperation of the Boys & Girls Clubs.”

The results of the Boys & Girls Clubs internal fact-finding have been submitted to the state investigation team for consideration in its report, the statement continues.

Salgado dismissed the organization’s findings, saying she wants whoever allegedly waxed her daughter’s eyebrows to “take responsibility for it,” she tells PEOPLE.

• For more compelling true crime coverage, follow our Crime magazineon Flipboard.

“I just want justice for my daughter. I want the person who did this to apologize to my daughter for what they did to her. I don’t want this to happen again to her or to anybody else.

“They had no right to change my daughter,” she says. “She looked beautiful the way she was. It was painful for her.”

Salgado has taken her children out of the center for now.

Calls for comment from the DEL were not immediately returned.

Author Inspires Other Moms To Embrace Their Bodies’ ‘Wobbles, Lumps And Bumps’

A British author, blogger and actress has encouraged other moms to love their “perfectly imperfect” bodies in an empowering Instagram post.

Giovanna Fletcher, whose books include Billy and Me and Happy Mum, Happy Baby: My Adventures In Motherhood, shared a photo on Instagram that shows her enjoying a day at the beach with her two sons, Buzz and Buddy, whom she has with McFly band member Tom Fletcher. In the caption, she wrote that she had recently seen many posts about postpartum bodies. She then gave a touching explanation about how she feels about her body after giving birth to her sons.

”At times it does bother me how much my body has changed, but I know I don’t ever want it to stop me having fun with the boys,” she wrote. “They aren’t going to look back and think, ‘Gosh, Mum had terrible cellulite, stretch marks and wobbled a lot,’ but they would notice if I sat out of games and didn’t make the most of my time with them.”

Fletcher emphasized how much she appreciates her body because it gave her the “two most important things” in her life, inspiring other moms to embrace their flaws.

“So thank you to you in all your wobbles, lumps and bumps,” she wrote. “To me, you are perfectly imperfect.”

In February, Fletcher stopped by AOL Build UK for an interview and spoke openly about her postpartum body. During the chat, she said that a short time after she had given birth, a woman who asked for a photo with Fletcher’s husband turned to her and said, “Oh, look. Mommy’s still got a tummy.”

Watch Fletcher’s AOL Build interview below.

Fletcher said that a few days later, the incident came to mind again.

“A few days after that I had a shower, and I stood in my dressing room ― leaky boobs, stretch marks, wobbly belly,” she said. “And I just thought, ‘How do I feel about this … my body has changed, it’s not like it was when I was 18, no surprise.’”

The author soon realized the strength of her body, especially after going through a miscarriage. She then offered the audience an important message on how society views people’s bodies.

“We scrutinize and we put it down all the time,” she said. “We’re always told, ‘She’s got cellulite, she’s too fat, she’s too thin.’ Who actually cares?”

Viral Post Highlights The Body Image Messages Girls Get From Their Moms

A Missouri mom’s Facebook post is highlighting the way mothers can have an impact on their daughters’ relationships with body image.

On May 8, Brittney Johnson posted a photo of herself trying on a swimsuit in a Target fitting room with her 4-year-old daughter Payton.

In the caption, Johnson described the day she spent with her daughter, noting that Payton chatted with a barista at Starbucks, made sure to say “please” and “thank you” at dinner, complimented a stranger’s’ hair, high-fived the attendant at a carousel she rode and even gave her two extra ride tokens to another little girl.

At the end of the day, Johnson and her daughter went to Target, where the mom picked out some swimsuits to try on. As she tried them on, she sent photos to her friends to help make choices. During this process, she snapped the photo she shared in her Facebook post.

“See that sweet baby girl in the corner? With half a dress on and one of the bikini tops I had picked out?” Johnson wrote. “I stopped for a second to see what she would say and when she turned to the mirror, she said ‘Wow I just love cheetah print! I think I look beautiful! Do you think I look beautiful too?!’”

At that point, the mom said she realized the impact her words and actions have on her daughter.

“I tell her that she is beautiful every single day,” Johnson wrote. “She is kind walking through the mall, because I tell her she is kind everywhere else. She is polite at the order counter because she hears me when I’m polite to strangers everywhere. She gives compliments to people she doesn’t know because she loves how it feels when she hears them.”

Applying this realization to parenting, she added. “When we are in a dressing room, with swimsuits of all God forsaken things, there is a split moment when I have the power to say ‘wow I have really gotten fat this year’ OR ‘wow I love this coral color on me!’ And those are the words burned into my daughters brain.”

Johnson called on her fellow parents to be examples for their kids when it comes to manners, kindness and body image.

“I am not a size zero. I never will be. I have big thighs and a huge rump and for some reason the middle of my body gets more tan than the rest?” she wrote. “But this body made a whole other body. I am strong. I am able. And I am happy. I don’t have to be beautiful like you, because I am beautiful like me.”

She added, “And as my daughter gets older, and she faces judgement and criticism, I will always remind her that the girls who look the prettiest in a two piece, or a body suit, or a freaking Snuggie, are the ones who are happy. Because that’s ALL that matters. And I want her to look at herself every single day and say ‘Oh wow! I think I look beautiful!’ because EVERY girl deserves to feel that.”

Johnson’s post received over 227,000 likes. She told HuffPost she was touched by the overwhelming response and ability to connect with fellow parents. Many people reached out to say her post inspired them to stop saying negative things about themselves.

“It has been such a great reminder that we are all on the same team, have the same fears and ultimately want the same thing for our children ― love,” she said.

“For every mean comment that I’ve received about my body, I’ve received at least a thousand positive comments, and I have to say that gives me a little more faith in humanity than when I started,” the mom added.

Johnson said she’s become a strong proponent of self-love. “I’m a mom but I am a lot of other things too. I’m a friend and a woman, and I think that sometimes going through the motions of being a momma drowns out the time to be all of the other things too,” she told HuffPost, adding that she thinks it’s particularly important to teach young girls to love others and themselves.

“I hope people can read my post and then look at themselves and say, ‘Here I am, and I am beautiful just the way I am.’ I hope people take away from it that our kids should know self-love and will only learn it if we take the time to teach it to them,” Johnson said.

She added, “And no matter what kind of mom you are or what size, you are beautiful and have every right to feel like you are.”

This new video goes out to all the moms who have ever cursed in front of their kids (i.e. all the moms).

In honor of Mother’s Day, Kraft Mac and Cheese released a funny new ad, based on a “survey” the brand conducted. The survey found that 74 percent of moms admit to swearing in front of their kid (which, let’s be real, means that the 26 percent of moms who denied it are full of it). In the video, “swearing expert” Melissa Mohr offers some funny, wholesome alternatives to curse words.

More Than 5 Million People Have Watched This Mom’s Powerful Spoken-Word Poem

A spoken-word poem has gone viral for its refreshing look at how difficult it is for many moms to be seen as more than mothers.

In a video of her spoken-word poem that the United Kingdom’s Channel 4 News posted on March 30, poet Hollie McNish explains that she only feels like an individual at night in the few hours she gets before she goes to sleep and wakes up to do it all over again.

“Cinderella’s clock strikes at midnight each time. My clock strikes loudly at nine,” she said in her poem, which has been viewed more than 5.8 million times as of Friday.

McNish rhythmically described the feelings of being described as “so-and-so’s mum” and the idea of mothers being “underpaid, overworked” as “snot rags” and “milk makers.” She also emphasized the strength of mothers, but stressed that crying every once in a while isn’t a sign of weakness.

“Someone said that moms are the rocks that never crumble,” she said. “I don’t think that’s true ‘cause I do.”

At the end of her poem, McNish reminds her fellow mothers that their “stories are many.” And the poem in its entirety proves that their stories are worth telling.

Scarlett Johansson Laments The Guilt And Challenges Working Moms Face

Scarlett Johansson is not afraid to speak candidly about the challenges of parenthood.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the amfAR New York Gala, the actress opened up about her experience raising her 2-year-old daughter, Rose Dorothy.

“I don’t profess to know anything about parenting, anything more than anybody else,” she said. “Being a working mom ― it’s an incredible challenge, it’s an incredible gift, and I think you always feel a little bit of guilt,” she added.

“If you’re at work, you feel like you’re missing out on those special moments with your kid. If you’re with your kid, you feel like you’re not giving enough to your job. But it’s a balance,” the actress continued. “I have a lot of huge admiration and respect for working moms. I’m barely, barely holding it together.”

Johansson was a guest of honor at the amfAR Gala and received an Award of Courage for her work in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.

The actress attended the event with her own mother, Melanie Sloan, whom she praised as one of her greatest inspirations.

“She never shielded us from what was going on in the zeitgeist in culture,” she said. “She always made us aware, you know, socially aware. She always encouraged us to be politically and socially active, so I couldn’t imagine a better date tonight.”

‘One Million Moms’ Is Going Totally Ballistic Over This New Zales Ad

Protesters in Standing Rock are being brutalized, white supremacists are rallying in Washington, D.C., and we’re hurtling toward a climate disaster. But don’t worry, anti-gay group One Million Moms is tackling the real problems facing our nation. Namely, a jewelry commercial showing a nice lesbian couple getting married.

The moral panic-enthusiasts released a statement this week decrying Zales for the new ad that, in a montage of couples and families, includes two women in wedding dresses happily exchanging vows.

“Zales is using public airwaves to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and belittle the sanctity of marriage in an attempt to redefine marriage,” wrote One Million Moms, apparently unaware that the actual definition of marriage already includes same-sex unions.

Their statement instructs fellow bigots to travel to Zales stores and tell managers (who surely have absolutely nothing to do with the company’s advertorial decisions) that they won’t shop there due to the commercial.

There are, of course, some legitimate reasons to criticize Zales, like promoting the huge scam of diamond engagement rings in the first place. But their inclusive commercial isn’t one of them.

Watch 2016 Olympic Athletes Pay Tribute to Their Moms in This Emotional Video

It takes a lot to be an Olympian: a lifetime of training, hours upon hours of practice, and major strength. But what we don’t necessarily see every day are the support systems behind these athletes. Which is why P&G is continuing their “Thank You Mom” Olympics campaign with a new video, “Strong”, which demonstrates the power that moms have in getting them where they are today — and we had a chance to speak to the Olympians themselves to find out what their mothers mean to them.

Gabby DouglasNicolas Maloof

This year’s video is predictably tear-jerking; if today’s not a day you’re prepared to cry at work, we suggest you save it until you can get your hands on a box of tissues. But when we spoke to 2012 Olympic gold medalists Gabby Douglas (gymnastics), Dana Vollmer (swimming) and Ashton Eaton (decathalon), they were all smiles — particularly because they were joined by their moms, who are just as inspiring as the fictional ones in the ads.

Our first chat was with Gabby Douglas, who, with her mom Natalie Hawkins, shared her strongest memory from her 2012 win. “During all around finals, I hopped off the floor and I gave my coach a hug, and he said, ‘Wave, you’re an Olympic champion.’ I think that’s the moment that’s definitely going to stick with me the rest of my life,” Douglas says. Hawkins strongly remembers the moment they put the medal on her daughter’s neck: “when the flag went up, and the anthem played. I was shaking all over and now I can never hear the national anthem and not think of that moment. It’s etched in my memory.”

Gabby DouglasGabby Douglas

Douglas will be the first American gymnast to defend her title at a second Olympics, which has required just as much strength and sacrifice from her family as it did the first time (when she famously lived with another family in Des Moines to get the best possible gymnastics training). Hawkins says that, just like the first go around when Douglas would call her homesick or tired, she encourages her daughter to be strong with scriptures: “They are all about strength and being courageous.” And now Douglas taps into her own reserves to get herself going on days when she’s dragging: “I just find different things that I can achieve,” she says. “And for me I love a challenge, I love to push the maximum so there are different things that I still want to achieve and you know put that on the board and take one step at a time.”

So what can we expect from the Rio 2016 gymnastics team? “Bigger gymnastics and a very good competition,” Douglas, who’s working with Gillette Venus, promises. “I think both I know what to expect — the experience last time is definitely going to help me this go around and I’m just more confident this time. I’m just more excited.”

Four-time gold medalist Dana Vollmer was joined by her mom Cathy to talk about her surprising return to the pool after going out on top in 2012 — and welcoming son Arlen last March. “I thought I was done!” she says. “I had this idea that you either had to be a swimmer or then you had to leave the sport and you became a mom and then you got a job and then kind of life after swimming. I don’t know if it was being on bed rest for seven weeks — I just was like I want my body back, and what better way to do this then trying to make a comeback at this”

Cathy admits to being surprised — “I thought she was just kidding me, actually!” — but just as supportive as she was during Vollmer’s many years of training as a kid. And Vollmer credits her mom’s great perspective for giving her the strength to get back in the pool after two years off. “She’s always done an amazing job of switching your perspective from, what’s going wrong at the time to all the things that it’s done for you. Even just down to as little as, I know it’s a hard workout but you’re also in the sun with your friends,” she says. “Now I try to find the positives in any moment. If I’m really tired or sick, well, I might be sick and I might be tired at the Olympics! Being a new mom and realizing that after a swim workout if I want a three hour nap, well, I don’t really get that option. This whole journey has been about family.”

She also shares her “Thanks, mom” moment, which came, incidentally, on her way to being a new mom herself. “When my husband and I first knew that we were pregnant and he turned to me and said, ‘I really want a little daddy’s girl.’ It just kind of sat with me for a minute and I was like man, like sometimes in high school I was mean to my mom and I was such a brat or something and it completely flipped it for me!” she says. “So I took her out to lunch and just really thanked her for all that she put up with and all that she did for me.”

Ashton Eaton, who won the decathalon in London, said his mom Roslyn is part of his strongest memory from 2012: “My strongest memory is just crossing that finish line and having pretty much directly in front of me my mom, my wife, my coach, my manager, the whole team really kind of sitting there in celebration,” he says. “Then [his mom] said, You did it!” Roslyn, however, remembers something extra: “Then I immediately told him how to hold the flag!”

These days, Eaton says he’s very self-motivated, but it’s all thanks to a strong foundation laid for him by his mom. “On those days that I didn’t want to do something or that I was kind of going half-effort — there was a specific time in baseball when I was just being lazy and she pulled me aside … and she said, There are 10 other kids in there that want to do what you’re doing and you’re not giving it 100 percent effort. So let somebody else do it who is going to give it 100 percent effort. I said Yeah, that makes sense.”

And he was able to repay the favor the first time P&G took him and his mother to the airport in a limo . “He said, Mom, see you’re in the limo, the sun’s shining, you can nap!” she says. “‘Cause I always say if I ever win the lottery Ashton I’m just going to hire a car to drive me around in the sun because I remember as a little girl I would just fall asleep in the sun in the car when your parents were driving and the best sleep I’ve ever had. So we get in the limo and he’s like mom, see? Take a nap!”

Cue the waterworks again.

Maddie Ziegler Isn’t the Only Stylish Dance Moms Star—Meet the Other Girls With Killer Off-Stage Style

The first kid to go mainstream from the Abby Lee Dance Company was undoubtedly Maddie Zieger—she counts a hit Sia music video as her breakout moment, and now she’s doing stuff like dancing fall trends for Glamour (awesome, right?). And while we heart the 12-year-old enough to invite her to guest-Instagram for us during last week’s Teen Choice Awards, it’s time to acknowledge the other Dance Moms stars with cute style out of the studio.

Maddie’s 11-year-old little sister, Mackenzie, seen on the left, has been taking style cues from her big sis, picking sweet, bright pieces that are totally age-appropriate. We sense a future shoe addict too—check out those metallic peep-toes!

chloe-lukasiak-dress-teen-choice-awards-2015
ALDC alum Chloe Lukasiak, 14, might not have appeared on the show’s most recent episodes, but her style hasn’t changed one bit. For the TCAs, she picked a Lublu Kira Plastinina skirt and Sabo Skirt top, a perfect example of the bright, feminine pieces she frequently rocks.

And while she’s not on the show anymore, Chloe still makes time to hang with former dance classmates, including Nia Frazier. Moonlighting as a movie video star between her dance competitions, the 14-year-old is used to super-fierce costumes. For time off, though, it’s all about easy basics like these cheerful printed shorts and bright tank.

Even at 14, Kalani Hilliker, on the right, has trend-driven style that incorporates plenty seasonal must-haves (like this suede a-line mini, a number we’re loving this fall for transitional styling). Her taste level has resulted in a professional gig too: Along with dancing competitively, she’s got a special collection with tween retailer Mod Angel.

Kendall Vertes, seen with Maddie on her left, wears the type of comfortable clothes you’d expect a serious 12-year-old dancer to rock when she’s out of a leotard: cute pieces with bright, fun prints that don’t look too constricting. Once she lost the statement sunnies, she could totally bust a move in this cute romper.

As one of the youngest members of the crew, JoJo Siwa, 11, has a youthful style that shows a lot of super bright colors, flirty cuts, and, yup, her signature hair bow. While standout hair accessories aren’t for everyone, it brings up a super-smart style message: Find what you love and make it your own.

Mom’s Honest, Inspiring Response To Comments About Her ‘Perfect’ Body

Mom and musician Kimberly Henderson gained a following back in December after her gorgeous lullaby cover of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” went viral.

Seven months and countless media appearances later, Henderson is back in the spotlight for a different reason. On June 19, the mother of four shared a selfie that shows off her “imperfect” stomach — stretch marks and all.

Everyone always compliments me on how I have such a "perfect" body after 4 kids. I decided to upload this pic and leave…

Posted by Kimberly Henderson on Thursday, June 18, 2015

“I decided to upload this pic and leave my belly ‘unedited’ ‘unphotoshopped’ because I used to struggle with accepting my body after kids,” she wrote in the caption. “I used to have a six pack before my babies.. And now even though I work out I know its not going to make my loose skin tight.. Or my stretch marks disappear ever lol and I’m ok with that because everyday I get to wake up to four beautiful smiling faces and I’m reminded that they are worth this flabby belly and they are worth these stretch marks.”

Henderson also opened up about her body image struggles as a young mom comparing herself to other girls her age. “I’m not trying to say I have it worse than anyone else,” she said, adding that she just wanted to share an empowering message with her fellow moms: “[Y]our body is beautiful… BECAUSE we ARE moms and we ARE superheroes and we freakin ROCK and in my opinion that is sexier than any six pack!”

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Facebook post had over 110,000 likes and thousands of comments. Henderson told The Huffington Post that she was touched by the large influx of positive comments, especially seeing “so many women and MEN lifting each other up about their bodies,” she said.

The musician said she was inspired to post the photo in response to the many comments she often receives from fans and friends about how “perfect” her post-baby body was. “Because of my thin figure people don’t think I have imperfections or insecurities,” she told HuffPost. “I wanted to show other women that I am just like them — stretch marks, loose skin.”

“I can embrace that because to me being sexy is being confident in your own skin,” she continued. “A mother’s body is beautiful and we all have insecurities.”

After years of struggling with body image and refusing to wear anything but a one-piece bathing suit to the beach, Henderson said she’s finally reached a point of being content with her appearance. “I realized that being ‘perfect’ is being imperfect. I wanted to empower other women to do the same!” And, she added, she now proudly wears bikinis. “If I hide [my stomach] that means I’m ashamed and I have nothing to be ashamed about.”

The singer, who will be going to London, Los Angeles, Nashville to work on new music this summer, hopes she can help her fans feel more confident as a show of gratitude for all the support they’ve shown her as she pursues her dreams in the music world. “And I hope I can be someone REAL they can look up to as an musical artist, a mother and a person.”

‘United We Feed’ Photo Series Supports All Moms — However They Nourish Their Children

Photographer and mom of two Caitlin Domanico hopes her latest project will provide support for all parents navigating the world of pumping, nursing and bottle feeding.

“United We Feed” is a series of photos Domanico took of clients, friends, and acquaintances nourishing their babies in the manner that is best for their individual families. For many of the women, that’s breastfeeding. For others, it’s pumping and bottle feeding. And for some, it’s tube feeding.

“Everybody’s journey is so different,” the photographer told The Huffington Post. “I love being able to tell their story and hopefully chisel away at that silly term ‘Mommy Wars’ with one photograph at a time by showing that we are all humans with a unifying goal in mind — to love our little babies with all of our soul.”

Domanico drew inspiration for the series from her own experiences as a breastfeeding mom. While her oldest daughter breastfed for six months and then drank pumped milk and formula from a bottle, her younger daughter nursed exclusively for 18 months because she refused to drink from bottles and often threw fits. “I have talked endlessly to family and friends about my daughters and how I was feeding them, why I was feeding them that way, and how I felt about it,” the mom recalled, adding “I sought support from women when I felt unsure, scared, proud, guilty, and determined.”

united we feed

The other moms in her life were also sources of inspiration. “I have offered support and suggestions, mailed tea to women, cheered when I received a text of a selfie of a woman whose baby just latched, and hugged them as I agreed with them that it was absolutely okay to choose formula feeding/pumping, or to be tube-feeding because it was medically necessary,” she recalled.

“I love when I am able to give to other women, to listen, to hug them, to offer encouragement, support, and remind them that they are rocking the role of mom,” she continued. “Because at the end of the day, each woman was making a decision to love and nourish their baby no matter what the method of delivery may be.”

The response to “United We Feed” has been “incredible” and “humbling,” Domanico said, noting that she’s received countless messages from mothers wishing to thank her for representing their experiences or even requesting own photo shoots. Recently, the photographer was moved when she photographed a lesbian couple feeding their new baby. After one mom pumped and prepared the bottle, her wife fed the baby. Another powerful experience was capturing a mom whose baby with Down syndrome was finally gaining weight after months of difficulty taking a bottle.

Ultimately, Domanico aspires to host a gallery of images in the Philadelphia area where her studio is located. She also dreams of publishing a book that celebrates the variety of parenting decisions and experiences — in different cultures across the U.S. and eventually, around the world.

Through her messages of support, the mom hopes to break down some of the feelings of “mommy guilt” that stem from breastfeeding and bottle feeding. “It can lead to defensive and competitive behavior from women, who at the end of the day all have the same goal in mind- to love and nourish their precious and tiny babies!” she said.

“It is through this project I envision uniting mothers across all walks of life, while simultaneously teaching my daughters that other women are not the enemy,” she added. “We owe it to each other to foster a community that is deeply rooted in respect for one another, after all, motherhood is amazing. It is filled with joy, love, and can be so incredibly gratifying.”

Keep scrolling and visit Domanico’s website and Facebook page for a look at her beautiful series.

16 Women Share Their ‘Perfect Imperfections’ In Mom’s Stunning Photo Series

Photographer Neely Ker-Fox knows what it’s like to struggle with body image issues during and after pregnancy. After giving birth to her second child, she had stretch marks and extra skin, as well as back problems that required physical therapy. “I no longer recognized my own body,” she told The Huffington Post.

Inspired by empowering photo projects like Ashlee Wells Jackson’s “4th Trimester Bodies”, Jade Beall’s “A Beautiful Body” and January Harshe’s #takebackpostpartum campaign, Ker-Fox decided to join in the dialogue that was taking place about women’s postpartum bodies.

“I was compelled to bring the same opportunities for women in my own community to have access to a chance to embrace their bodies, address their insecurities and hopefully feel empowered.” Ker-Fox created “Perfect Imperfections” — a photo series that featured friends and neighbors posing in a stripped down state and in many cases, with their children.

Ker-Fox said she wanted “to make these women see how beautiful they were, to truly do something empowering with their vulnerability and bravery.” She wrote a blog post about her hopes and goals for the project and then posted a callout on social media. The response was “overwhelming” and she received messages from about 30 women, 16 of whom she was able to photograph in the studio.

beautiful imperfections

To help her subjects feel empowered through the project, the photographer took some similarly raw photos of herself first. “I wanted to know how these women would feel on the other side of my camera,” she said. “I felt I couldn’t truly understand the feeling of being stripped down to such a vulnerable position without myself standing in their place.”

Believing that art and photography have the ability to heal, Ker-Fox was proud to help women of different ages and from different backgrounds work through their various struggles, from physical and emotional pain to fertility issues to postpartum challenges. She even photographed a little girl with spina bifida, whose mother wanted to give her a moment to truly shine. “This project is so much more than photos of stretch marks, or cellulite,” the photographer said. “It’s about women coming out of the shadows and discussing their everyday struggles in an effort to normalize, to empower, and to educate.”

Ultimately, she hopes that sharing these images will inspire future generations — especially her own children. “The more society is exposed to these real people, the more women will feel empowered to talk about postpartum, fertility issues, postpartum depression, bullying, and the more others can find peace in knowing they are not alone in their struggles,” she said. “At our core we simply need to know that we are not alone.”

For the photographer, creating this series has been a personal healing experience as well. “These lines, these battle scars of life, I will carry them with me until the day I die,” she said.

In the future, Ker-Fox would like to broaden “Perfect Imperfections” to include more women and girls of various backgrounds and experiences and eventually, even male subjects. “Obviously women are more apt to be the victim of body shaming, or the seemingly rampant epidemic of mommy wars. But we as humans all have insecurities and we are all scarred, imperfect and flawed in some way physically and emotionally,” she said.

Keep scrolling and visit Neely Ker-Fox’s website to see her images and learn more about the project.

Here’s What Happens When Daughters Try On Their Mom’s Wedding Gown

As a mom, seeing your daughter wearing your wedding dress can bring on a range of emotions — tears of joy, nostalgia and quite a few laughs too.

That was certainly the case for the three mothers in a BuzzFeed video posted to YouTube on Friday. One of the dresses was dated (“I just feel like like this looks like the nightgown of a queen in the 1700s” one daughter said), one was ill-fitting (“I could just…bust the whole thing open,” another said). But the last one, a strapless ball gown, was the best fit of the bunch.

“It was very emotional for me just to think that she might try on my dress,” the teary-eyed mom said. “It was just nerve-racking to think of this step in her life.”

Reese Witherspoon Has The ‘SNL’ Cast Apologize To Their Moms For Mother’s Day

We’ve all lied to our moms and put them through hell and back. But luckily Reese Witherspoon is around to remind us to apologize.

For the “Saturday Night Live” Mother’s Day episode, the “Wild” actress had each of the SNL cast members bring their mom on stage and apologize for that one awful thing they did.

From sneaking out on a date to peeing the bed (and then peeing all over the place after), there was a lot to say sorry for. But the moms got their revenge: embarrassing each of their kids on live television with old home videos.

Now go call your mom already.

Moms In Need Get Clothing, Toiletries For Their Families Just In Time For Mother’s Day

Movers around the country are helping to get essential items to mothers in need, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Two Men and a Truck, a moving company, has been hosting annual donation drives across the U.S. for mothers at partnering women’s and family shelters as part of an initiative called “Movers for Moms.” The group is delivering the items, which will include clothing and toiletries, around Sunday.

One homeless mother who requested to be anonymous is currently staying at the Druid House in Baltimore, one of the shelters involved. She told HuffPost that the initiative is more than a nice gesture.

“Especially as mothers with children, we don’t want [our children] to see us struggling with the basic needs,” she said. “When somebody has made that effort to provide those things to you … it might seem like something so small but it really gets rid of some of the concern and the stresses.”

A variety of organizations, schools and local businesses are working with Two Men and a Truck to contribute items or serve as donation drop-off locations, according to a representative of the company. Items donated can range from basic clothing like underwear or socks, to hygiene products such as toothpaste and soap. Last year, Movers for Moms donated 220,000 goods to mothers in need, a press release pointed out.

The Druid House resident told HuffPost that buying items like toothpaste and soap isn’t so simple for people in her position. She explained that because people at the shelter may have difficulty traveling to a convenience store, or have little income, some of these products are not as accessible as one may think.

“You’re thinking ‘How are you gonna get it” or ‘Where are you gonna get it?’ ‘How are you going to afford it?’ ‘How are you going to get to the store?'” she told HuffPost of the complications preventing her from purchasing necessities.

The resident told HuffPost that she’s grateful for the donations, and it’s a moving thought to know that people are willing to help her and others in need.

“When people work together to do those things, it really lets you know that somebody cares. And the children feel it too,” she said. “They are so happy and excited when they know somebody is caring about them, and sometimes you just need to know that.”

Grateful for My Mom’s Legacy this Mother’s Day

As both a mom and a daughter whose mother has passed away, Mother’s Day is always a bittersweet time for me. While I enjoy being celebrated by my son and husband, I miss my mother dearly. Each day of my life her legacy and influence live on through my parenting, family traditions, cooking, education and style. So many of our viewers reach out to me asking about the necklaces I wear on my show. What they might not know is that my mother is the inspiration behind the statement necklaces I wear each day.

I have to wear a robe, but I still like to be a jazzy judge! I inherited my love of jewelry and interesting statement necklaces from my mom. My late mother was very stylish in an understated, classy way, but she loved wearing beautiful, interesting neckpieces. A bold necklace is a great way to create a stylish focal point for any kind of outfit.

I carry on my mother’s flair for fashion by wearing some of her pieces and designing almost all of the others. And, almost every piece I have worn on the show is a one-of-a-kind creation. For me, the necklaces hold a special meaning and are more than just a fashionable piece of jewelry. My necklaces not only remind me of my mother, they are a symbol and reflection of the colorful, bold, unique woman she raised me to be. All of the words of encouragement and affirmation concerning my necklaces has inspired me to create a line of necklaces and other statement pieces.

I hope you enjoy your Mother’s Day! I’d love to hear how you celebrate your mom or keep her legacy alive limitlessly.

Moms Are ‘On Fleek’ In Hefty’s Hilarious New Ad Campaign

A new ad campaign from Hefty shines the spotlight on moms. But these aren’t regular moms, they’re cool moms.

At first glance, the parents featured in the series of ads embody the cardigan sweater-wearing, PTA president trope of motherhood, but when they speak, they whip out wild party stories full of today’s teen slang — from “bae,” “FOMO,” and “on fleek” to “hangry,” “cray” and “bye Felicia.”

“Traditionally mothers are cast in one light: wholesome caregivers for their children. But the reality is moms are much more complex and multifaceted,” Hefty Cups director of marketing Lynnette Hinch says in the press release for the ad campaign. “Their social networks are extremely important to them, and time spent with friends is often a welcome escape from the drudgery of daily life. We decided to activate that sense of fun, juxtaposing their routine tasks with recaps of epic ragers from the night before.”

And what a strange juxtaposition it is.

Peter Pan Moms: We Won’t Grow Up

We Peter Pan Moms make up the first-generation of hot moms, MILFS and cougars — congratulations and condolences to us. Take, for example, the Facebook timeline. We Peter Pan Moms update our vanity avatars more often than we floss, alternating between a youthful headshot taken from above (always from above) and a peek at our latest ink. We channel our rock star within on the dance floor, at the karaoke mic and sometimes party a bit too much like it’s 1999. Make that 1989. Sun City has no idea what’s coming, but they better amp up their WiFi, add tattoo artist to their spas and start training their DJs.

Once a vanity reserved for celebrities, now the illusion of forever (lifted, rejuvenated, de-veined) young falls within reach of the masses. During their “hot mom” years, our grandmas wore modest dresses and stockings. Mom wore “mom jeans” because that’s how jeans came — high in the waist and ample in the hips. The only women in America getting routine plastic surgery lived in Beverly Hills or could afford to. As kids, we occasionally begged off of our mothers (and fathers) wardrobes, but they certainly didn’t beg off ours. Maybe — maybe — a classmate mentioned your mom as pretty, but MILF? An unthinkable moniker, and If anyone did think about it, they certainly did not celebrate it aloud. We called our friends’ parents Mr. and Mrs.; The line between parent and child, teen and adult, and those who should and should not wear mini-dresses seemed obvious. When Dirty Dancing came out, we certainly hadn’t seen our parents doing anything remotely like it at Auntie’s wedding.

I fear that Peter Pan Moms — as we joust with standards of hardbodies, wrinkle-free foreheads, full manes of no-greys (and nary-a-hair-elsewhere )– have created our own hawt purgatory, NeverNeverEVERLand. I foresee us as centenarians in NeverNeverEverLand, clenching our hot mom sashes and stilettos in arthritic joints, instead of gracefully handing them over to the next generation in exchange for Clark’s Wallabees and elastic waist pants.

Our grandmas couldn’t conceive of this NeverNeverEVER Land. Our moms fought too hard to be taken seriously to risk wearing pants that showed crack. Legs got shaved — maybe armpits — but if my crotch-height memories serve me correctly, our moms worried even less about their bikini lines than they did about the rubber swim caps suctioned to their natural salt-and-pepper hairdos. While sometimes I revel in my Peter Pan Mom rebellion of middle age, I also wonder how long I can keep it up. Instead of using our real life matriarchs as role models or adopting the Women’s Studies 101 ideals we once tormented our loved ones with around the dinner table, Peter Pan Mom desperately searches for ways to look less and less MOM.

My mom has always dressed and behaved with dignity and class (at least in public and so far as I know). She exercises for good health, not for hard abs (which neither she nor any prior generation sought, nor even found attractive). Growing up, I never heard her complain about her body, nor lament its aging. I hope that we Peter Pan Moms figure out how to marry our vanity with our aging bodies, obsess less over how our bodies look and shift our focus on to gratitude for how well they (hopefully) still work. I hope we learn to share the spotlight and know when the time comes to sit in the audience and clap when Tinkerbell publishes her first blog post. Most of all, I hope that we embrace the softness of our laps, while our Wendys Michaels and Johns still want to sit in them.

‘The Holidays’ Trailer Stars Moms In All Their Stressed-Out Glory

In honor of the upcoming Holiday-season mania, the funny ladies behind What’s Up Moms have put out a new “fake trailer” video.

Inspired by Scary Mommy’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays, “The Holidays” shows a Christmas sweater-clad mom tackling all the usual holiday season madness — gift-shopping rush, full parking lots, kitchen nightmares, ungrateful kids, Christmas card disasters, and so much more.

Still, the funny trailer ends on a slightly optimistic note. “Somehow, you’ll find a way to be merry.”

Fingers crossed.

Moms, Human Or Not, Are Incredible! And These 6 Videos Prove It

Mothers are incredible. They do so much for their children. As if bringing them into this world wasn’t enough, they also love them, feed them, clean them and make sure they survive to adulthood. And it’s not just human mothers who dedicate themselves to their young. Here is a tribute to non-human mothers and all that they do!

Animal moms come in all shapes and sizes … and species. And they love their babies, despite any, er, apparent differences.

Take this mama cat, for example, who abducted three newly hatched ducklings on a farm in Ireland, not to eat them, as her owners feared, but instead to mother them! Read the rest of this incredible story here.

In the end, even cats and dogs know that our differences are only skin, or fur, deep, and a mother’s love overcomes all obstacles. Take Coco and Hope, for example. Hope, a Shih Tzu puppy, was rejected by her mother, but thankfully, a Siamese cat named Coco was willing to adopt the little dog. Read more about Hope and Coco here.

Mothers are there for their little ones from the first moment they open their eyes, just ask this polar bear mom. Read the full story here.

Let’s face it, moms put up with a lot. Thankfully, they endure rambunctious little ones with grace and patientce. Like this mom whose cubs can’t seem to give her a moment’s peace. Read more about the fuzzy family here.

Moms, even elephant moms, are always there to help their babies out of a tough spot. Read about this mama rescuing her calf here.

And, most importantly, we know that moms will do anything to protect their young. Take, Bella, the mama horse who literally stood between her baby, Butterscotch, and the flames and falling debris of the burning barn they were trapped in. It’s an incredible story, but then again, are we really surprised? Moms are AMAZING. Read their full story here.

Plus, check out this bonus video about the top 10 moms in the animal kingdom, and read the full story here.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there, human or otherwise!

‘Moms Night Out’ Feels Like a Dated TV Sitcom

“Moms Night Out” is the kind of movie you feel you ought to like because it is so family friendly, and families have been crying out for ages for more “clean” movies. This one is definitely clean. Still watching it you wish it had just a little something extra that would make it more enjoyable. As is, it is a movie with some interesting/funny moments but it also has many moments that seem too frenetic and too preachy.

Sarah “Gray’s Anatomy” Drew plays Allyson, wife of Sean (Sean Astin) and mother to three small children. She loves her husband and her kids but for some reason she isn’t happy. Maybe it’s because her house is a mess and so is she. To lift herself up out of her dumps she agrees to a moms night out with her best friend Izzy (Andrea Logan White) and her pastor’s wife Sondra (Patricia Heaton).

Going out with the girls sounds simple enough but this “night” gets messed up fast. In a very short time Allyson’s van is stolen, her sister-in-law’s baby is missing, and her husband is on his way to the hospital. This all plays out in Lucy, Ethel, Desi and Fred fashion and it is confusing to say the least. It is also chaotic and bewildering.

Much of the fault of the failure of the film must be laid at the feet of Drew. As Allyson she just does not connect with the audience. She comes off as whiny and shrill. Even when she has her tender moments the audience is still not with her.

Countering her is Patricia Heaton. She has some of the brightest moments in the movie, but then that is as it should be. Heaton has been charming us for years; first on “Everybody Loves Raymond” and presently in “The Middle.” She has uncanny comic timing and draws us to her character from the first moment the audience sees her.

Outstanding in the male members of the cast is Robert Amaya as Marco, Izzy’s husband. Marco is a man on the verge of hysteria throughout the film. This leads him to act funny, talk funny and be funny. Also good is David Hunt (Heaton’s husband) who plays the cabbie the women hail to take them on their adventures. Though his is not a big role Hunt takes advantage of every scene he has to make an impression.

The movie is rated PG for some mild action sequences.

If you are looking for a comedy that is not deluged with profanity and sexual innuendoes then you have found your movie. You can safely take your mother or even your grandmother to see it and not be embarrassed in the least. But if you are looking for a sharp comedy that thoroughly entertains then this is not it. “Moms Night Out” plays like a TV sitcom from a few years ago. It feels dated and in this case that is not a good thing.

I scored “Moms Night Out” a homebound 5 out of 10.

‘Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club’ Box Office Falls Short

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Street racers couldn’t catch a time-traveling dog and his son at the multiplex this weekend.

Though Disney’s “Need for Speed” was expected to take the No. 1 position at the box office, DreamWorks’ “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” took the lead, with the action film in third place. The animated movie, about the adventures of a genius dog and the human son he adopted, earned $ 21.2 million, according to studio estimates released Sunday. Debuting last weekend at No. 2, the 3-D kiddie-jaunt features voices from “Modern Family” stars Ty Burrell and Ariel Winter.

“Our midweek numbers were very strong, indicating good and positive word of mouth,” said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution at Twentieth Century Fox. “If anything, this is exceeding (expectations). It’s a combination of likable characters and it’s a nostalgia play for those who are familiar with the show.”

Mr. Peabody and Sherman first appeared in the 1950s and early 1960s on “Peabody’s Improbable History,” a segment within the animated television series “Rocky and His Friends” and later “The Bullwinkle Show.”

“The family marketplace is giving every other genre a run for its money,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “But the St. Patrick’s Day effect could be at play here, where families had to exercise their options at the theater rather than the pub. That may have paid off for ‘Mr. Peabody.'”

Meanwhile, analysts predicted that “Need for Speed,” based on the popular EA Entertainment video game and starring “Breaking Bad” alum Aaron Paul, would come in at No. 1 this weekend. But with $ 17.8 million, it arrived at No. 3 in the U.S. But the movie raced to the top of the international box office, bringing in $ 45.6 million.

Warner Bros.’ warrior drama “300: Rise of an Empire,” the 3-D sequel to 2007’s “300,” dropped to second place, with $ 19.1 million, after debuting at No. 1 last weekend. Though its opening haul of $ 45.1 million pales in comparison to the original, which debuted with $ 70.9 million, “Rise of an Empire” has earned more than $ 78 million since its debut.

Tyler Perry’s “The Single Moms Club,” starring Nia Long and Amy Smart, opened with $ 8.3 million at No. 5.

“This is one of Tyler Perry’s lowest debuts ever, but he cranks out hits every year for almost decade,” Dergarabedian said. “He’s allowed a couple of missteps every once in a while.”

Leading the year’s early trend of films about religion, Fox’s “Son of God” grossed $ 5.4 million in its third weekend. After opening at No. 2 with $ 26.5 million, it dropped to No. 5 in its second week, earning $ 10 million. Its performance may indicate that religious stories aren’t holding up at box office. Plus “Son of God,” starring Diogo Morgado, lacks star power.

However, other upcoming films with a biblical thread feature leading men who are more likely to get viewers to theaters. “Noah,” out March 28, stars Russell Crowe. And later this year, in the Ridley Scott-directed “Exodus,” we’ll see Christian Bale as Moses.

Playing in only 66 theaters, Wes Anderson’s “Grand Budapest Hotel” landed at No. 8 with $ 3.6 million. When it opened last weekend, the stylish comedy showed on just four screens in New York and Los Angeles. Still, it impressed with $ 200,000.

Rounding out the top 10 is the Kristen Bell-starring cult-TV-show-turned-feature “Veronica Mars.” Its $ 2 million debut was impressive considering the film’s funding came from a crowdsourcing campaign, the first high-profile project to do so.

Also opening this weekend was Jason Bateman’s directorial debut “Bad Words.” Showing in only New York and Los Angeles, the comedy earned $ 120,000, one of the biggest per theater averages of the weekend, with $ 20,000 per movie house.

Sci-fi action movie “Divergent,” based on the Veronica Roth’s young adult novel and starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet, stands to knock every other film a place or two down when it debuts next weekend.

Sandra Bullock’s Reaction To An Oscar Nod Is One That All Moms Will Definitely Understand

Being nominated for an Academy Award is, obviously, a huge honor that puts actors and actresses on a whole new level professionally. But, when you’re also a parent, Oscar doesn’t change much.

Sandra Bullock told the New York Times, in reference to her Best Actress nomination for “Gravity”:

“I don’t think it ever stops being an absolute thrill, but I do have an immediate leveler… I still have to get up and make lunch for a little person, and pray — please, dear God — that he eats something I put in his lunchbox today.”

Bullock adopted Louis Bardo Bullock in January, 2010 — just two months before winning her first Oscar for Best Actress in “The Blind Side.” Soon after, she told People about life as a mom: “You wake up, you feed, you burp, you play, you do laundry … I’m still in that stage where I’m just amazed with him and at life.”

All together now. Stars, they really are just like us.
