Going Trick-or-Treating on Wednesday? Bring Your DIY UNICEF Box to Raise Money for the Cause

Remember those little orange boxes you could take trick-or-treating to raise money for UNICEF? They’re back — and you can even make one by yourself before you go collecting candy on Wednesday night.

The Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign kicked off in 1950 and has raised nearly $ 177 million to help the organization provide children with healthcare, nutrition, safe water, emergency relief and educational services.

While some might not see the difference some spare change can make, it’s huge: 50 cents provides one packet of ready-to-use therapeutic food to help a malnourished child, $ 2 provides 10 bars of soap and $ 5 provides one UNICEF backpack for a child to use at school.

Can covers are available to download at TrickorTreatforUNICEF.org, along with more information on this year’s #BeScaryGood campaign, featuring Slappy from the movie Goosebumps 2. Those who have their hands full with chocolate but still want to help can contribute at unicef.org. It’ll feel just as good as that post-holiday sugar high.

GoFundMe Donors Speak Out as Couple Is Accused of Spending Homeless Man’s Money: ‘Despicable’

Donors who contributed money to help a homeless man in need say they are “saddened” by reports that the New Jersey couple who launched the GoFundMe campaign may have spent the funds on luxurious vacations and even a BMW.

Johnny Bobbitt, 35, was living on the streets of Philadelphia when he famously spent his last $ 20 to buy gas for 28-year-old Kate McClure after her car broke down on Interstate 95 last October. To repay him, McClure and her 39-year-old boyfriend Mark D’Amico launched a GoFundMe campaign, with more than 14,000 people donating a total of $ 402,706 to the man.

Now, less than a year later, Bobbitt is back on the streets and McClure and D’Amico are under criminal investigation. Through his lawyer, Bobbit has accused them of engaging in fraud and conspiracy by withholding money from him and spending the funds on a lavish lifestyle.

“It looks like they scammed him. That is despicable,” donor Janine McClenny, of Houston, tells PEOPLE. “I didn’t donate money to the couple. I donated to Johnny.”

McClure and D’Amico have denied the fraud allegations contained in Bobbitt’s lawsuit, and they have not been criminally charged.

On Thursday, the Florence Police Department executed a search warrant at McClure and D’Amico’s apartment and seized the couple’s BMW, a spokesperson for the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office told PEOPLE. The search came just days after the couple’s attorney said in court that the money they had been court-ordered to hand over to Bobbitt’s legal team is all gone.

“That kind of money can bring out the worst in people,” donor Sheilah Scofield tells PEOPLE of McClure and D’Amico. “It was just too much money for them to handle,” she speculated. “I thought was right to . They were withholding money that was raised for him.”

RELATED: N.J. Couple’s $ 400K Donations for Homeless Man’s GoFundMe Is Gone, His Attorney Says

Burlington County Judge Paula Dow ordered the search warrant that prompted the prosecutor’s office to tow away the pair’s BMW, the spokesperson with the prosecutor’s office told PEOPLE. The spokesperson said that should criminal charges be filed, the couple could potentially face arrest.

Earlier this week, the couple’s attorney, Ernest Badway, said in court that all of the remaining funds are gone and Dow has ordered D’Amico and McClure to appear before her on Monday to explain where the money went. A court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 14.

McClure and D’Amico have said they began to keep the remaining funds from Bobbitt after he allegedly spent $ 25,000 in less than two weeks, some of it on drugs. They spoke about the incident last week on Megyn Kelly Today, claiming that they went above and beyond to track down the man’s birth certificate and get him identification.

They said they used the money raised to buy Bobbitt a camper that he asked for, an SUV, clothes, food and to admit Bobbitt to rehab for drug addiction.

Scofield says she is “saddened” by the recent developments, and McClenny tells PEOPLE that she thinks the couple should never have withheld the money.

“I don’t think the couple should have the right to decide to keep the money from Johnny,” she says. “He is an adult. They are not in a position to make decisions about how he spends money raised for him.”

RELATED: Homeless Vet Will Get $ 400K in GoFundMe Donations Despite Couple’s Alleged Fraud, Lawyer Says

Attorneys for neither Bobbitt nor the couple immediately responded to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

“He was our family. He is our family. I still think, to this day, that he is our family,” McClure told Kelly. McClure spoke through tears as she claimed the couple’s been receiving death threats.

On Thursday, GoFundMe officials said that they would ensure Bobbitt received money through their GoFundMe Guarantee program.

“Johnny will be made whole and we’re committing that he’ll get the balance of the funds that he has not yet received or benefited from,” officials wrote on the organization’s Facebook page. “GoFundMe’s goal has always been to ensure Johnny gets support he deserves.”

NFL Player And Wife Skip Wedding Gifts And Raise Money For Rescue Animals Instead

NFL player and dog lover Logan Ryan used his wedding as an opportunity to say “I do” to a cause he and his wife are passionate about ― animal rescue.

When the Tennessee Titans cornerback tied the knot with Ashley Bragg on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia in April, they asked their guests to donate to Help Animal Welfare in St. Lucia (HelpAWS) ― a foster-based organization dedicated to rescuing, spaying and neutering stray dogs and cats and finding them forever homes ― in lieu of giving wedding gifts.

Dog rescue is with us wherever we go,” Ryan told The Dodo. “It’s just something we’re passionate about and want to make a difference in any way we can.”

Leading up to the big day, guests had been asking the couple what they wanted for a wedding present. At first, Ryan and Bragg just told them to donate to their local animal shelters. But once they heard about HelpAWS, they directed their family and friends to donate there instead.

The idea came to them the day after their intimate nuptials when the bride and groom put on their wedding clothes once again to take some photos around the town of Soufrière. That’s where they ran into a friendly stray pup, who instantly took a liking to the couple.

Charlene Penney, founder of HelpAWS, told HuffPost that the chance encounter with the pup (pictured above) is what connected the newlywed couple with her organization.

“While visiting the town, they saw how many stray dogs were wandering the streets,” she said. “After their photo shoot, they left wondering what is being done on the island to help stray animals and what they could do to help. So they asked their photographer about local rescue groups and that’s how they found us.”

Penney said they were able to find the dog from the photo shoot and rescued her shortly after the newlyweds had left the island. They named the dog “Logan” in the groom’s honor. Though Logan has some health issues, including tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis, Penney told HuffPost she is confident the dog will be ready for adoption soon.

“With the money [the Ryans] raised we were able to cover most of her medical expenses and we were also able to spay and neuter 11 cats we have in our care,” Penney added.

In 2015, Ryan and Bragg launched a social media initiative called Ryan’s Monthly Rescue with the goal of helping dogs, especially pit bulls, get adopted. The pair are parents to a baby girl named Avery, who attended the wedding, and two dogs, Nala and Leo, who were unable to be there.

“Our love of dogs may have been the only thing missing from our big day,” the bride told The Dodo. “The fact that we connected with HelpAWS and helped this one particular dog made the entire experience even more unforgettable.”

A post shared by Logan Ryan (@realloganryan) on

Penney said she is grateful to the couple for bringing both money and awareness to her organization.

“We have developed a close relationship with the Ryans. Ashley is even coming back to St. Lucia in the fall to help volunteer at our next spay and neuter clinic,” she told HuffPost. “We can’t wait!”

For more information on adopting a pet through HelpAWS, check out their website or Facebook page. If you’re interested in donating to the cause, you can do that here.

Women for Women International Charity Raises Money From Designer Donations

DESIGNER DOLLARS: “The mood has been excellent,” said Charlotte Olympia Dellal, the founder and owner of footwear firm Charlotte Olympia, referring to the designer car boot sale in London’s Soho on Saturday. “It’s a fun day out, and we love seeing all the women getting excited for shoes as women do. Charlotte Olympia, Edeline Lee and Temperley London were among the number of British and international labels that sold clothing, beauty items and artwork for the second Women for Women charity car boot sale — similar to a garage sale — that took place in London’s Soho. The event has raised more than 150,000 pounds, or $ 194,009, so far, with the rest of the items to be listed on eBay May 15. This 13-Year-Old Raised Money For Over 800 People To See ‘Hidden Figures’

At only 13 years old, aspiring astronaut and devoted “Hidden Figures” fan Taylor Richardson is leading quite the philanthropic cause.

Earlier this week, Richardson was deemed GoFundMe’s February “Hero of the Month” after raising $ 17,000 through the fundraising website for people throughout the nation to go see the hit movie. “Hidden Figures” is centered around three black women mathematicians who played a pivotal role in sending the first American into space.

“I hope [the movie] inspires them to know they can do anything they put their mind to,” Richardson told The Huffington Post earlier this week.

Thus far, Richardson and her mother have given over 800 people the opportunity to attend a free screening of the movie (with snacks) and ― for a number of them ― receive the Hidden Figures book.

Richardson said her initial infatuation with “Hidden Figures” came after her regal experience attending The White House Hidden Figures in Space Exploration event in December where the movie was screened.

“It shows me that women, and especially African-American women, can do anything a guy can do and anything a white male can do,” she said of the movie.

Richardson said her initiative to send people to free screenings initially targeted young girls, but she and her mother later decided to broaden the audience.

“We wanted to have other groups see not just what three black women did, but just to know [of our] contributions,” Richardson’s mother said.

While the two know the movie won’t compel everyone to aspire towards having a career in space, like it has with Richardson, they hope that through the Hidden Figures books, kids will at least be able to develop a heightened interest in literacy, something Richardson has regularly been working towards in her community.

When she was nine years old, Richardson said she encountered a young boy at a hospital who didn’t have easy access to books. After that, she decided to hold broke drives in her hometown in his honor called “Taylor Takes Flight With A Book.”

To date, Richardson has collected and donated over 5,000 books in Jacksonville and read to over 300 children.

She’s also worked on an anti-bullying campaign with the CEOs of Florida First Coast YMCA and Girl Scouts of Gateway Council.

But Richardson’s philanthropic trajectory isn’t what’s made her mother most proud: it’s her resilience.

“I tell people all the time: what makes me most proud of Taylor is not what you hear and all these success stories, but how she handles her failures,” her mother told HuffPost.

But the persevering spirit of Richardson ― who was bullied, held back in the second grade and once struggled with literacy ― can best captured in the way she turned around her ADHD diagnosis.

“She calls ADHD: Abundantly Different Happily Divine,” her mother said. “I hope I live to see her go Mars.”

People Across The U.S. Are Raising Money For Girls To See ‘Hidden Figures’

“Hidden Figures,” the hit film that tells the story of three black women who helped NASA send a man into orbit, has been praised for putting women of color in the spotlight.

That’s why people across the country ― teens, teachers and community leaders ― are raising money through GoFundMe to ensure young girls can see the movie.

One of those people is Taylor Richardson, a 13-year-old aspiring astronaut from Florida, who wants to send 100 girls to see “Hidden Figures” at a theater in Jacksonville, Florida. She also wants to raise money on GoFundMe for the girls to have snacks and get a copy of the “Hidden Figures” book.

Richardson first saw the movie at a screening at the White House and has since seen it three more times. She said the film was “amazing.”

“I cried, I laughed, I got angry and then got determined to not let others’ impressions of me because of the color of my skin impact how my life will be,” she told The Huffington Post. “These black women did something I never knew about, and it’s not in any history books that I’ve studied thus far.”

As of Friday, Richardson has raised $ 2,540 of her $ 2,600 goal. She found the girls she plans to take to see the film from organizations that have impacted her life like the YMCA, Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, See The Girl and Journey Into Womanhood. She wants them to go home after the movie feeling as inspired as she did.

“This movie instills that us girls can dream big and make it even when odds are against us,” she said. “Most importantly I want girls to know that, like boys, they too can excel in STEM with hard work.”

Several teachers across the country have also started GoFundMe campaigns to help send their students to see the influential film. After reaching his goal of $ 1,000, Peter Modlin will be taking girls in second, third, fourth and fifth grade who attend the Detroit elementary school where he teaches. Modlin told HuffPost he hopes the students learn to dream big after watching the movie.

“I want the girls to see this movie in hopes that a lightbulb might go off,” he said. “A lightbulb that signifies a belief in the opportunity to do or be anything they want to be, if they work hard to achieve that goal.”

Like Richardson and Modlin, Phyllis Marshall raised money on GoFundMe so local girls could see “Hidden Figures,” and has since taken them to see it.

On Jan. 7, she took 50 girls from Roberts Family Development Center in Sacramento, California, to the theater. She’s worked with the center, which is in a low-income community and provides after-school care, for years. Through GoFundMe she raised more than her $ 1,500 goal, which provided transportation, snacks and tickets to the movie. Marshall said “they loved it.”

Marshall was glad to be able to show the girls that women can succeed in science, technology and mathematics. She was especially thrilled to show them that women of color and their success deserve a place on the big screen.

“I certainly hope as many young girls get to see that movie as possible.”

Other teachers and community leaders are raising money for kids to see “Hidden Figures, too. Check out their campaigns below.

Buying Books Online: Finding Bargains and Saving Money With Booksense Stores, Amazon Marketplace, and Other Online Sites

There may not be a more practical addition to the library of any book lover, parent, or college student this year than Stephen Windwalker’s Buying Books Online: Finding Bargains and Saving Money with Booksense Stores, Amazon Marketplace, and Other Online Sites. Windwalker is the longtime bookseller who wrote the book on Amazon Marketplace and online bookselling with his recent bestselling entrepreneurship title Selling Used Books Online: The Complete Guide to Bookselling at Amazon’s Marketplace and Other Online Sites, one of the top 20 small business titles of 2002 at Amazon. In his new book Windwalker demonstrates the same capacity for providing the inside scoop as he shows book buyers how they can safely navigate the global internet book marketplace to find the new, used, or rare books they want and need, in great condition, at huge savings. For starters, Windwalker’s book helps buyers to understand the basic terminology of bookselling so that they will be able to distinguish between different copies of a title with respect to condition, edition, binding, size, and age. They will learn how to evaluate the apparent professionalism of a seller based on customer feedback, book descriptions, customer service policies, and other available information, and are provided with a helpful listing of the best places to buy books on the Internet. Beyond these basics, the book buyers will pick up some useful “tricks of the trade:” How to use “pre-orders” and “wants lists” to g

First Nighter: A. R. Gurney’s “Love & Money” Doesn’t Buy Happiness

When Love & Money begins with Cornelia Cunningham (Maureen Anderman) confronting lawyer Harvey Abel (Joe Paulik) over the disposition of her will, it looks as if the new A. R. Gurney play is going to be substantive. Cornelia, you see, is planning to leave her impressively large gobs of money to charities, and this has Harvey worrying that her heirs–two grandchildren never seen–will contest the stipulations.

The assumption about Gurney’s intent, however, is misplaced. A dramatist who often pulls back from the more shadowy implications of his plots, Gurney withdraws from those here so forcibly that patrons may experience a mild form of whiplash. In the end, the comedy (?)–a co-production of the SignatureTheatre and the Westport Country Playhouse, where Mark Lamos, who directed, is artistic director–is a minor trifle.

Your enjoyment of it will hinge on how fond of trifles you are. Love & Money is so mildly amusing as it passes that I’m writing this review as fast as I can so that even more of it won’t fade from my memory before I finish.

Cornelia is rich, all right. The study–that Michael Yeargan has designed–where the action takes place and featuring its view of a staircase hung with tasteful landscape painting, confirms her wealth. Due to how wrong her late husband and two late children went as a result of being well heeled, Cornelia is convinced that money only corrupts. So she’s giving it away to Save the Children, et cetera.

Harvey’s concern is that Cornelia’s grandchildren will object, and when she assures him they have already been mollified, he surprises her by producing a registered latter from a man claiming to be the son of her late daughter Louisa, whom Cornelia claims never married or had children. Hardly has the missive come out of its envelope when the doorbell rings and in quick time the letter’s sender arrives–an African-American named Walker Williams (Gabriel Brown), who’s been nicknamed “Scott” because of his declared passion for F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Any committed theatergoer familiar with John Guare’s Six Degrees of Separation (there can’t be many who aren’t) will immediately wonder about Scott’s authenticity, but it sure looks as if Cornelia hasn’t spent much of her moolah on theater tickets.

To Harvey’s consternation, Scott ingratiates himself with Cornelia by way of the love for Fitzgerald that she shares. He also shows her a typewritten letter he says he received from Louisa after she’d left him with his father’s family and moved to France. There’s also the overall charm he smilingly dispenses. It does seem strange, though, that with all his passion for Fitzgerald, he doesn’t know the word “badinage.”

Oh, well, he does get around Cornelia, but when Harvey has to leave for lunch with his girlfriend, Scott doesn’t fare so well with Cornelia’s crusty cook Agnes Munger (Pamela Dunlap) and with Juilliard student Jessica Worth (Kahyun Kim). She’s stopped by to test a spinet Cornelia is offering to donate to the school

It turns out Cornelia had the instrument converted to a player piano some time earlier so she could program it with many of the Cole Porter songs she adores. (Did Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda love Cole Porter? Undoubtedly they all knew each other in Paris, but I digress.) The talented piano offers Jessica an opportunity to sing one of the 1913 Yale grad’s less well-known ditties, “Make It Another Old-Fashioned Please,” which Kim does nicely. When Harvey returns from lunch with news relevant to Cornelia and Scott, he seizes–with an important aim in mind–the opportunity to reprise “Get Out of Town,” another of Porter’s wry ballads. Like Kim, Paulik makes his unexpected rendition an attention-getter.

About this time, Gurney decides to wind up his tale to fit today’s trendy intermission less 90-minute format. In the name of a spoiler-free Love & Money account, no details will be listed as to how he does it. Certainly, nothing will be revealed about whether Scott is who he claims to be or whether Cornelia really cares one way or the other or whether Harvey prevails in his distrust of Scott.

But it’s fair to say that a work with the elements of a more probing examination of the haves and the have-nots definitely dwindles into something that couldn’t be more light-hearted and gay in the now nearly forgotten sense of the word. This, when money is blatantly prominent among the great contemporary American themes.

With Lamos deftly capturing Gurney’s curious mood, the cast members can’t be faulted. Anderman, who only leaves the stage for a short time when Cornelia goes to enjoy a cold-soup lunch with Scott, is lovely. Paulik does the hard-nosed lawyer well and then gets hilariously unstarched when he goes into his song. Brown is clever at keeping everyone guessing about what Scott is up to. Dunlap’s no-nonsense maid is right on the, uh, money, and Kim takes full advantage of her scene.

(Just wondering: Has Gurney given Scott the name Walker Williams because “Walker” is the designation accorded men who escort wealthy ladies when the husbands aren’t available? There is definitely the implication that Scott could turn into one of those odd characters.)

It may be that many ticket buyers will be as wowed by this addition to Gurney’s long play list as Cornelia is wowed by Scott. Others are very likely to leave their seats thinking a baffled, “Huh?”

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The “People Power” Internet Business Superbook Five Books on Making Money Online

The five books on making money online are as follows: Book 1. Business Website, Collect Money, Send Things Book 2. Internet Selling (Sell on Your Website & on the Big Internet Stores) Book 3. Online Classified Ads Book 4. Internet Marketing, Website Optimization (Get Visitors to Your Website) Book 5. Computer-Internet Jobs-Business E-commerce lowers the cost of transmitting information and makes it accessible to everywhere on the planet in under a second. That’s great but that’s all it is, a faster, more accessible means to do business. If your product is not very good and you have problems running your business, e-commerce will not magically make you rich. Many players tried to make money from the internet itself like ebay, amazon, google, etc. but most failed. Many retail internet websites failed but some fared alright, the ones that had a niche market where the products they sold could be easily shipped by a delivery company and already established companies who merely put out a website to enhance their existing business. The major disadvantages of internet sales are as follows: Some things are meant to be sold in person like clothing, a car, flowers, etc. Some things are simply not condusive to being shipped because it costs too much like dog food, garden tools, etc. Customers are picky about some things, they complain a lot and there’s room for fraud. Consider vitamins. There are fakes and cheap knock-offs. If you buy a bottle at your local health food store, you feel safer than buying a bottle over the internet. The shipping costs make some things not amenable to being sold over the internet like small, inexpensive things where the cost of shipping is as much as the product itself. Anything that’s perishable can’t be sold. A big part of buying is impulse. You see something at the mall and buy it. Some products have to be inspected. You can’t get a feel for them over the internet. Some products don’t have enough buyers to justify a websit

Smiles Mean Money in France, But Hidden Benefits Are Even More Enriching

“A person who smiles a lot is either a fool or an American.”
— Russian adage

The French government has launched a new  campaign  to make its citizens smile in an effort to promote a more welcoming environment for tourists. But science tells us that French authorities will be beating their heads against the wall if they really think they can coax aloof Parisians to put on a happy face.

Because, well, there’s no smiling in France.

Or so say psychologists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who have found that the most expressive nations —  those with citizens who are quickest to crack a smile – are those with heavy immigrant populations. That puts the homogeneous France near the bottom of the list with Russia and Japan. Among the leaders: Canada, Brazil and the good ol’ U.S.A.

So, what is it about living in the world’s melting pots that puts smiles on the faces of their citizenry? Simply put, a smile is the mother tongue. It bridges language barriers, predicts trust and signals friendly intentions among people of disparate origin.

And conversely, it is a lack of smiles, among other things, that has given France a reputation for being a difficult place to visit, especially if you don’t speak the language.

This isn’t the first time the French have tried to legislate smiles to convey warmth to tourists. The current effort is similar to campaigns in  2003  and 2009 , when the tourism board set up “smile ambassadors” at the nation’s most-visited spots. But by all accounts, the efforts of the police du sourire fell flat. Those smiles turned – or stayed – upside down.

What Happens to Our Brains When We Smile

There is fascinating research about the power of an upturned mouth. Smiling activates the release of neurotransmitters, including dopamine and serotonin, that help  fight off stress. Having  too little of these brain chemicals has been linked to depression. When we smile, we also trigger the release of “happy hormones,” including  endorphins, the same chemicals that give us that “runner’s high” after exercising. Even aping a smile can spark a feeling of  happiness  and  reduce stress. Charles Darwin was the first to suggest that one’s emotions could be enhanced by one’s expressions, positing that just the  act  of smiling produces positive emotion.

Fast forward more than 100 years and “positive emotion” leads off renowned positive psychologist Martin Seligman’s five-sided PERMA model of the traits that foster well-being. According to Seligman, there are two kinds of smiles, the “Duchenne smile” and the “Pan American” smile. The Duchenne smile (named for neurologist Guillaume Duchenne) is involuntary and genuine. It is a broad smile that forms wrinkles on the outer edges of the eyes (i.e. crow’s feet). On the other hand, the Pan Am smile (the forced smile of flight attendants from the long-defunct airline), is inauthentic. It involves only the muscles of the mouth. (To see if you can spot the fake from the real smile,  take this quiz  from the BBC.)

But back to our poker-faced friends around the world: In the UW-Madison study, researchers examined the psychology of smiling in 726 people from nine countries and compared the results for each country with its immigration numbers. Participants were asked what constituted a good reason to smile, with options like, “is a happy man,” “to sell you something,” or “feels inferior to you.”

The results? Countries with more immigration over the last 500 years were more likely to interpret the smile as a happy or friendly gesture.

In countries with less diverse pasts, such as France, Russia and Japan, the act of  smiling  is more complex. Japanese people will grin to  mask negative feelings. The Japanese tend to control their expression of emotion so much so that people there have been  given instruction in the art of the smile. Meanwhile, the French are so notorious for not smiling that the British tourism group VisitBritain released a guidebook with tips for U.K. hoteliers to avoid offending guests from other nations. “Don’t exchange a smile or make eye contact with anyone from France who you do not know,” the guidebook states.

But can we equate the act of smiling with true happiness? In a paper called “The French Unhappiness Puzzle,” economist Claudia Senik argues that France’s “cultural mentality” makes the French far less happy than their wealth and lifestyle would predict. Senik’s research suggests that French unhappiness is due in large part to “multi-dimensional” dissatisfaction and a low level of trust in other people. She says policies to address unhappiness in France should start in early childhood.

A smile, real or fake, is a good starting point, and the bigger the grin, the better. Researchers at  Wayne State University analyzed the smiles of 230 Major League Baseball players culled from their 1952 trading cards to test how positive emotions affect longevity. The intensity of the players’ smiles was compared with life data for the men, controlling for body mass index, education, career length and other factors. As it turned out, the players with the broadest smiles lived seven years longer.

The Big Picture

The UW-Madison researchers believe there are public policy implications that come with exposure to, and understanding of, diverse cultures living within the same borders. For example, said lead author Paula Niedenthal, citizens “may be more or less willing to pay for universal healthcare, because they empathize differently with in-group and out-group members.”

So let’s hope the French Smile Revolution is a winner this time around. It’ll build trust among tourists and natives alike, and lift moods all around. Personally, I hope the friendly efforts penetrate deeper than a superficial strategy aimed at fiscal gain, because we don’t have to excavate ancient history to see how the smile has been  used as a  propaganda  tool.

Here in the free world, I highly recommend smiling. And go all the way. You can fake it ’til you make it, but the Duchenne smile is a  more powerful mood changer  than the perfunctory one flashed at the Pan Am jet-setters.

Nick Gordon Sued For Allegedly Abusing And Stealing Money From Bobbi Kristina Brown

ATLANTA (AP) — A court-appointed representative of Bobbi Kristina Brown has filed a lawsuit against her boyfriend, Nick Gordon, claiming he took money from her and abused her physically and emotionally.

Bedilia Hargrove filed a lawsuit against Gordon Wednesday in Fulton County Superior Court. The complaint says Gordon routinely transferred large amounts of money from Brown’s accounts to his without Brown’s permission.

The complaint also accused Gordon of misrepresenting the nature of his relationship with Brown, being violent toward her and arguing with her before she was found face down in a bathtub at her suburban Atlanta townhome.

Gordon is accused of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, unjust enrichment and conversion.

The suit seeks at least $ 10 million in damages. A call to Gordon’s attorney was not immediately returned.

In ‘Cloud Nine,’ Artist Kate Durbin Asks Women ‘What Have You Done For Money?’

Head over to the website for Los Angeles-based artist Kate Durbin’s newest project, “Cloud Nine,” and you’ll be greeted by a few lustful mouths lined with dollar bills, flirtatiously positioned above a rather intrusive question: “What have you done for money?”

The question is aimed at female-identifying artists, all of whom are encouraged to submit their “confessions” anonymously to a designated email address. There, Durbin gives no hints as to what she’ll do with said confessions, so The Huffington Post reached out to the artist to figure out exactly why she’s soliciting women online, under the guise of a common cam girl name — cloud9.

money

“The connection with the cam girl has to do with the fact that many artists I know do sex work in order to have enough time and money to be artists,” Durbin explained. In an earlier interview with the pop culture blog Konbini, Durbin said that the responses she’s received already have indeed ranged from sex work and sugar daddies to babysitting, PR jobs and parental and governmental assistance. She’s heard about jobs from stints as assistants to pizza delivery, even reality television.

By prying into the lives of female artists, Durbin wants to highlight the difficulties creatives face — particularly women — in securing funds for their work, whether it’s compensation for pieces made or financial support to travel and show their work. The fact that women artists earn less money than men is hardly a secret; for example, in 2012 alone, every artist in the top 100 auction sales was a man. Durbin digs deeper than that, though, confronting the fact that women outnumber men in art school (according to Gallery Tally expert Micol Hebron, women constitute between 65 and 75 percent of students in MFA programs), only to enter a world in which men make up 70 percent of gallery-represented artists.

Below, find out what Durbin had to say about art-school debt, her own financial history and exactly what she’s doing with her collection of anonymous stories.

cam

What was the inspiration for Cloud Nine?

I started noticing how often my artist girlfriends’ conversations revolved around money and not what was inspiring us to make art.

I noticed how often they Skyped into conferences, because they had no institution or funding source to support their attendance. I noticed how often they didn’t write because they had to work an 8-4 job just to pay rent and then work some more to pay off their student-loan debts. I noticed how often they defaulted on their loans because they didn’t have money to pay them. I noticed how many of them had sugar daddies and felt like they had to hide it. I noticed how many of them had trust funds and felt like they had to hide it. I noticed all the adjuncts who were teaching six classes at three different schools and not making enough to live, and also not making art. I noticed all the paintings being flipped and selling for bank, and then I noticed my friends who were on food stamps and who couldn’t afford dental work.

I started to notice everything in the world around me that had to do with art and money, and I paid attention to it, instead of ignoring it — instead of believing in the fantasy that these were all “individual failings,” that none of these people were “good enough” artists to make it. This is how “Cloud Nine” came to be.

How many stories have you gathered so far, and how did you go about reaching out to women?

I have 50-plus stories so far, and hope to gather more. The call is viral on Facebook, and Konbini’s article helped. I’ve reached out to female-identifying artists who I know personally, and have asked them to share their stories and to spread the call. I’m specifically reaching into as many communities as I can, of varying socio-economic backgrounds. The project is DIY. I don’t have a team reaching out for me. I’m doing this while simultaneously working other jobs.

What form will “Cloud Nine” take once you’ve compiled the stories?

I will be performing the piece live online via video stream on New Hive and also on one of the world’s biggest sex camming sites simultaneously. I don’t want to give the performance away, but I will be playing with the idea of “confession,” performing as a cam girl/artist. The stories will be woven into the performance.

You mentioned to Konbini that talk of how artists make money was never discussed in school. Ideally, what would these discussions look like to you? Would you have benefited from a class geared toward the economics of being an artist?

The short answer is yes, but I think we have larger systemic problems that won’t be alleviated by a class on the economics of being an artist (although that should just be mandatory within our current system). It should also be noted that not all artists create the type of work that can be bought and sold for money (take poets, for example), or want to work within the gallery system.

MFA programs themselves perpetuate debt, as well as credentialism: two economic disadvantages to artists. Yes, some programs pay full tuition, and those are the ones people should be attending. The fact that it’s sort of a given for artists to get MFAs — and, increasingly, PhDs — is a sign of the bureaucratization of our era. And of course, many people get MFAs in order to go on to teach, yet most teaching work is now adjunct labor. Adjuncts are not paid a living wage and not given any job security. The majority of adjuncts are women. Can you see how the odds are stacking higher and higher against female-identifying artists (and, let’s not forget, artists of color, queer artists, trans artists)? Can you see how increasingly it is only artists who had money to begin with who can succeed in such a system?

sex

People have long said that artists should “know what they are getting into” when they become artists and suffer. Now people are starting to say that to college teachers. It’s a way to shame people from speaking out against systemic abuse — and neglect is a form of abuse. We exist currently in a system that does not support human beings with basic resources to use their gifts in this world. We exist within a system where art is not valued, which makes sense, because human beings are not valued in this system either. But is this the world we want? If not, we need to overcome our shame and fear and speak out about the realities of our lives as artists.

That is the first step. Then, to dream of something better. Yoko Ono says, “A dream you dream alone is just a dream, but a dream we dream together is reality.” I personally would love to see something like universal basic income put into place as a step toward alleviating this problem. It also serves to alleviate the increasing income equality and unemployment that is resulting as technology and robots take over human jobs over the next few decades. So this is not just about artists — artists here are the canaries in a coal mine, in a sense. Yet of course it would be beautiful to live in a world filled with art, instead of people producing things or doing jobs they don’t care about just to eat and die.

Obvious question: what have you done for money?

What haven’t I done?

I plan to share my full job history during the performance, but I will give you a partial rundown now of some of the jobs I’ve had. I started working when I was 12, running my own babysitting business in two neighborhoods. I worked almost every day — my parents homeschooled me, and as a result I could work all the time. Through high school I worked in fast food, at Krispy Kreme, and in college at a Jamba Juice knock-off shop and then at a mom-and-pop health food store. After college I worked a series of miserable administrative jobs, from data entry to [being an] administrative assistant to writing the intros for religious radio shows.

For the past seven years, since I got out of grad school, I have worked as an adjunct professor both in person and online. I often worked more than full time but did not have health insurance or a living wage. Next year will be the first year I have a full-time teaching job. I love teaching, but it is very hard to make a living teaching college.

There is more to my economic history that is difficult for me to talk about, all of which I will confess during the performance.

Do you have anything else you want to add to people who either want to take part in the project or see it when it’s completed?

I would love to hear your stories if you want to share them with me. All of your identifying information will be removed, so it’s totally anonymous. Please send your story to cloudnineconfess@gmail.com.

Tune in to the “Cloud Nine” performance on May 28 on New Hive at 7 p.m. PST/10 p.m. EST. Images by Tien Tienngern.

Art and Money: A Lesson From the Borgias

Periodically we hear the anguished voices of sensitive aesthetes lamenting the deplorable and degraded state of contemporary art. These ascetic sophisticates often blame the prominence of Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, and Takashi Murakami on the corruption produced by the vast, even unprecedented economic power of a few wealthy dealers (Larry Gagosian) and collectors (Steven Cohen) in the market for art.

The proposition that money corrupts art is absurd, and the contention that the link between the two is anything new is simply ignorant. Clement Greenberg long ago observed that advanced art has always been attached to society’s ruling class by an umbilical cord of gold; I have previously written about how strong this tie was in the Renaissance.

2014-12-30-Jacopo_Pesaro_bisschop_van_Paphos_voorgesteld_door_paus_Alexander_VI_Borgia_aan_de_heilige_Petrus__28022010_135655.jpg
Titian, Jacopo Pesaro being presented by Pope Alexander VI to Saint Peter (ca. 1503-06). Image courtesy Wikimedia Commons.

But a current exhibition illustrates an even more powerful point. As every admirer of Orson Welles knows, in one of his most famous speeches – as Harry Lime in The Third Man – Welles pointed out that Italy under the Borgias was plagued by warfare, terror, and murder, and produced Leonardo, Michelangelo, and the Renaissance. “Les Borgias et Leur Temps” at Paris’ Musée Maillol forcefully documents what Welles remarked. In this elegant setting, the very faces of the evil dynasty of the Borgias gaze at us as they were seen by the greatest artists in the Western canon. Among its masterpieces, the exhibition includes a magisterial Titian portrait of Pope Alexander VI, a powerful Raphael portrait of Pope Paul III, and a wonderfully delicate Leonardo study of Cesare Borgia.

The power and wealth of the Borgias were potent disinfectants: these images show us honest, sincere, and devout servants of the Church, with no hint of the sadistic and perverted assassins and lechers they were in reality. Our knowledge of the true history of the Borgias allows us to recognize that their evil and corruption were no bar to making their countenances the basis for inspirational and moving works of artistic genius. Not only does money not corrupt art: even blood money doesn’t corrupt art. Nor is this surprising. The Borgias had real power in the market for art: Leonardo, Raphael, and Titian would not have considered declining their commissions, for the consequences of doing this could have been more than merely financial. Larry Gagosian and Steven Cohen can only dream of having power of this kind.

“Les Borgias et Leur Temps” reminds us that today’s market for art is far more competitive, and far more transparent, than in the past. And it demonstrates beyond any doubt that even an extremely high degree of power among its purchasers does not corrupt art. But Orson Welles knew that all along.

Counting “Frozen,” three of the five biggest 2014 films have been released by Disney. Without “Frozen” included, Disney still holds that title: “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” ranks fifth on the list of 2014 releases with $ 714.1 million in ticket sales. Overall, Disney has surpassed $ 4 billion in total worldwide box office receipts for the second year in a row, the only two times that number has been reached in the studio’s history.

Saved By The Bell’s ‘Mr. Belding’ Weighs In On Dustin Diamond Movie: ‘Clearly It’s About The Money’

As Mr. Belding on “Saved By The Bell,” Dennis Haskins portrayed a venerable, well-loved principal in a diverse California high school. Since the show ended, one of his former on-screen students hasn’t made the best decisions.

Dustin Diamond, who played affable nerd Screech, has appeared on reality shows like Celebrity Fit Club, Celebrity Boxing and Big Brother. He also published a book, “Behind The Bell,” which supposedly told stories of his life while filming the show. The book has made him no friends with his former cast members; Mark-Paul Gosselaar ripped Diamond on HuffPost Live back in August for the “negative” tome.

Haskins stopped by HuffPost Live on Friday to chat about his memories of the show, and to dispel recent internet rumors of his death. Haskins told host Marc Lamont Hill that he talked to Diamond on Thursday, and that Diamond is in a “much better place now” despite his earlier missteps.

“I literally talked to Dustin yesterday,” Haskins said. “I haven’t talked to him in several years but he reached out to me. He made some choices to do some things that he’s dealing with the results of his choices. You got to remember Dustin was 12 and everybody else was 15 and 16. That’s not a natural fit… But I never was aware that it was a huge deal… Dustin thinks different. He acts different. He is different.”

Diamond’s book, published in 2009, was recently made into a Lifetime movie. In a 2013 interview with OWN, Diamond tried to distance himself from both the book and film, blaming his ghostwriter for misconstruing the story. Haskins believes that Diamond simply did these things to stay financially afloat.

“Clearly, it’s about money. The movie made some money, I guess. A lot of people still love Saved By The Bell,” Haskins said. “That’s the message that I get… It’s hard to say, Marc, you want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but how many times do you do that?”

Watch the rest of the clip above, and catch Haskins’ full HuffPost Live conversation here.

Money Can’t Buy You Love

Money isn’t everything. These days, when people start complaining about their daily misfortunes, a friend or therapist might suggest that they sit down and draw up a “gratitude list” in order to better appreciate their assets and blessings which they so often take for granted.

While many people think of gratitude lists as an outgrowth of 12-step programs or the ever-expanding genre of self-help books, precious few are aware of their link to a 1946 hit musical with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. One of the many songs made famous by Ethel Merman was Annie Oakley’s Act II production number entitled “I Got The Sun in the Mornin’ and the Moon at Night.” Here’s a clip of Merman performing the song during the Music Theatre of Lincoln Center’s 1966 revival of Annie Get Your Gun.

The Merm put her stamp on lots of songs by such Broadway titans as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Vincent Youmans, Cole Porter, and Jule Styne. Ironically, one of the duets which she introduced in 1939’s Du Barry Was A Lady was given a second life when it was added to the score of a 1954 television version of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes that co-starred Frank Sinatra and Bert Lahr (Merman’s original partner from the stage version of DuBarry Was A Lady).

“Friendship” returned to the musical stage in a 1962 off-Broadway revival of Anything Goes that starred Eileen Rodgers. Since then, it has become an integral part of most productions of that beloved Broadway show.

* * * * * * * * * *

To my knowledge, there was no original cast recording of Cole Porter’s score for Du Barry Was A Lady. That’s a real shame because it glows with the songwriter’s mischievous wit in his lyrics for “It Ain’t Etiquette” and “But In The Morning, No!”

I’d never come across “When Loved Beckoned” and “Katie Went to Haiti,” but “Well, Did You Evah!” was recycled for the 1955 movie musical, High Society. In 1975, the song was used by Peter Bogdanovich in At Long Last Love. In the following clip it is performed by Cybill Shepherd, Madeline Kahn, Burt Reynolds, and Duilio Del Prete.

Another gem from Du Barry Was A Lady was “Give Him The Ooh-La-La.” Although Merman never recorded the number, Carol Burnett performed it in a 1956 segment of Omnibus.

San Francisco’s 42nd Street Moon recently revived Du Barry Was A Lady with Bruce Vilanch starring as Louie Blor (the role created by Bert Lahr on Broadway). The plot revolves around a simple device: Blor is the ladies washroom attendant at a nightclub who has won the lottery. Although he’s in love with singer May Daly, she’s in love with her friend Alice Barton’s brother, Alex.

When Louie’s replacement, Charley (Jordan Sidfield), suggests that Louie can succeed at wooing May by giving Alex a Mickey Finn, Blor gets distracted and forgets which drink is intended for Alex. After passing out, he dreams that he is really France’s King Louis XV and that May is the beautiful Madame Du Barry. Complications quickly ensue.

As it turns out, Louis XV’s chances of hooking up with Madame du Barry are equally dismal. But the show allows for some delightful costume work, visual sight gags, and a great deal of mugging on Vilanch’s part.

What becomes most apparent from watching Du Barry Was A Lady onstage is that they no longer write new musicals for actors with the kind of personality and stage appeal that a great comic like Bert Lahr developed while working in vaudeville and burlesque. Nor are there any unique voices around today (like Merman’s) which might inspire a Broadway composer to write a show with one particular singer in mind for the leading role.

2014-06-15-dubarry2.jpg

It’s difficult to resist the bawdy charms of a script whose minor roles include Fondue, Paingrillé, La Marquise de Gruyere and La Comtesse de Roquefort. While Vilanch delighted the audience whenever he was onstage, 42nd Street Moon’s production of Du Barry Was A Lady benefitted handsomely from Ashley Rae Little’s brassy performance as May Daly as well as Zack Thomas Wilde’s direction and choreography.

As Alex, Jack Mosbacher scored strongly with Porter’s romantic ballad, “Do I Love You?” In supporting roles, Nicole Renée Chapman doubled as Alice Barton and Alisande de Vernay while Jordan Sidfield (whose toothy smile evokes memories of Robert Morse and Tommy Steele) drew comic relief as the streetwise Charley and the goofy Dauphin who has a fetish for taking apart watches. Others in the cast included company regulars Ryan Drummond, Rudy Guerrero, and Nathaniel Rothrock.

While this may not be Porter’s strongest score, it’s great to have a chance to see a Broadway hit that has fallen into oblivion (the 1943 film starring Red Skelton and Lucille Ball with a young Zero Mostel as “Rami the Swami” is a real clunker).

Don’t try to pigeonhole Eastern Boys, a new French film written and directed by Robin Campillo that was recently screened at the 2014 San Francisco International Film Festival. On one hand, it’s the story of an intergenerational relationship between a Frenchman in his 50s and a Ukrainian refugee who speaks no French. On the other hand, it’s hardly an idealized fairy-tale of an orphaned hustler who’s down on his luck but gets a second chance in life from a sugar daddy.

What Campillo does exceeding well is balance an atmosphere of increasing tension, suspense, physical danger, and gay politics in a narrative which will have some people on the edge of their seats and others wondering if the protagonist is the most gullible fool in Paris.

The truth is that Daniel (Olivier Rabourdin) obviously has enough money in the bank to survive having his condominium looted by a band of young thugs. Or perhaps he was just waiting for a reason to change the decor in his home from middle-aged gay chic to IKEA-style austerity.

2014-06-15-eastern1.jpg

Poster art for Eastern Boys

The action begins as an overhead camera follows a group of young man making their way through the crowds in and around the Gare du Nord. These “Eastern boys” are under the leadership of their charismatic Boss (Danil Vorobyev), a Russian thug who takes great pride in his athletic body. Among the man’s charges is a young Ukrainian whose working name is Marek but (as the audience subsequently learns) whose real name is Rouslan.

It doesn’t take long for Marek to capture the attention of Daniel who, after a traditional cruising pattern of hide-and-seek, tries to negotiate a hookup. When Daniel gives the young man his address and sets a time and date to get together, one can almost sense the audience inwardly groaning at the sheer stupidity of his action. It’s like offering an open invitation to the modern equivalent of Fagin’s boys from Oliver Twist.

Daniel’s doorbell rings at the appointed time, but his condo is quickly filled with the Boss’s gang, who methodically loot the place of any item that could possibly have any value. As their shocked victim stands by, numbly calculating his losses, Marek appears, looking a bit sheepish.

2014-06-15-Eastern2.jpg

Mareki (Kirill Emelyanov), his boss (Daniil Vorobyov), and Daniel
(Olivier Rabourdin) in the looting scene from Eastern Boys

Marek returns the next evening, calmly telling Daniel “You want fuck me? Is all right. I don’t mind.” His fee of 50 Euros is once again agreed upon and a quick, loveless fuck follows. Soon Marek is dropping by two or three times a week and the cost of his visits has grown substantially.

There are, of course, risks and challenges. Marek (who is quickly learning French from Daniel) can’t let his Boss know about his extracurricular activities. As the young man begins to trust Daniel (and explains how he knows that his parents are dead), the Frenchman’s concern for the boy’s safety starts to grow into a mentor-like form of supervision. Soon, Daniel is insisting that Marek/Rouslan sleep in a separate room as he methodically embarks on a process to rescue his young friend from a life of crime.

Once the Boss catches Marek attempting to break into his locker at the hotel where the gang stays, Campillo’s film takes a hair-raising turn and quickly becomes a hostage situation whose resolution is aided by the hotel’s black concierge, Chelsea (Edéa Darcque). Rouslan’s rescue, escape, and the plot’s final pivot will leave viewers shocked, scared, and surprisingly satisfied.

Why? At the end of Eastern Boys, true love triumphs over treachery and lust. Here’s the trailer:

Make Sure You Have These Money Talks Before Saying ‘I Do’

By Holly Kylen for Bridal Guide

Put yourselves on the right financial path with these tips from ING wedding finance expert Holly Kylen.

Don’t dodge the debt

Make sure all the financial skeletons come out of the closet before the big day — discuss school loans, credit card debts and other prior obligations (child support or private loans). As uncomfortable as this topic might seem, you don’t want any unexpected surprises when it comes to debt obligations. Your debt — and your partner’s — impacts not just your collective bottom line, but also your ability to jointly make financial commitments, like buying a first home.

Take a financial inventory

Now is the time to have a heart-to-heart with your future spouse about his financial past, present and future. Talk about retirement and other savings, whether you have wills that need to be updated and work benefits such as retirement accounts, health and life insurance and disability benefits. Explore whether you can save money by going on each other’s health insurance after marriage and consider whether you may need disability insurance to protect your paycheck if one of you becomes disabled and can’t work. Also ensure you are both contributing enough to your workplace retirement plans to take advantage of the employer match.

Play detective

Take notice of whether your future spouse spends money frivolously, frugally or somewhere in between. Dinners out, expensive vacations and buying the latest “it” item can reveal a careless approach to money. On the other hand, your partner might be frugal, ordering the cheapest item on the menu or splitting the bills down to the penny. Turn the microscope on yourself as well to identify your money personality. Tuning into these clues can help you set realistic expectations for yourself and your partner.

Create a support network

Your financial inventory should also include financial professionals who can support you as a couple in working toward achieving your financial and retirement goals. If you already work with an accountant, attorney and/or financial advisor, make sure your partner also establishes a relationship with them — and vice versa. If neither you nor your spouse has ever consulted with a financial advisor, now is the perfect time to find one together.

Look ahead to the retirement horizon

Growing old might seem like it is years away, but planning for retirement doesn’t happen overnight. If you and your fiancé are already saving for retirement through an employer-sponsored retirement plan or individual retirement account (IRA), you are off to a great start. If not, you may want to consider getting started saving for retirement and set up automatic deductions from your checking account or paycheck directly into a retirement account. This is also an opportunity to talk about your collective budget and make sure retirement savings is a shared priority.

Think about ’til death do us part

It may be in the marriage vows, but “death” is not something any bride wants to consider before marriage. That said, marriage is a major event that entails joining you for life with someone else. Protect each other through life insurance and update your beneficiary information on financial and retirement accounts.

Establish your roles

You don’t have to figure this out right away, but start to talk about how the two of you are going to divide household finances. Perhaps you pay the monthly bills and day-to-day expenses, while your spouse handles the insurance and retirement savings, or vice versa. Figure out each other’s strengths and natural abilities and play to those in how you divide up the financial responsibilities.

Be each other’s biggest cheerleader

Make sure you are each other’s biggest support when it comes to making financial decisions. Confide in each other and offer constructive advice. If the financial inventory uncovers debts or other financial challenges, figure out how to tackle the issues together as a team. Don’t forget to celebrate your successes, too. Promotions, raises and reaching financial and retirement goals are milestones that deserve recognition.

Holly Kylen is an ING Retirement Coach and financial advisor at ING Financial Partners, where she developed a Retirement Planning for Women seminar. She also serves on ING’s Women’s Advisory Network Board.

Presenting a dazzling study of the sensational “Emperor of Fragrance” and France’s first billionaire, this unprecedented biography traces Coty’s life and legacy from his familial roots through his death in 1934 and the transformations of Coty, Inc. into the cosmetics powerhouse it remains today. Born in 1874, next-door to the house of his relative and idol Napoleon Bonaparte, Francois Coty was orphaned at the age of seven. He spent his childhood under the care of the Jesuit priests and elderly women of his ancestral Italian family in Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica. After briefly serving in the reserves of the French army, Coty became a parliamentary attache for a well-connected family friend and prominent Parisian senator. Coty spent four years absorbing Paris’s political and cultural scene of the fin de siecle before discovering his extraordinarily sensitive sense of smell. He set out to create his first fragrance in 1904; by 1906, he was a millionaire. Drawing upon Coty’s personal correspondences, memoranda, and papers, the authors have crafted a modish and masterful biography of France’s first man of fragrance. Rich in intimate anecdotes involving such figures as Coco Chanel, Rene Lalique, former kaiser Wilhelm Hohenzollern II, and Sergei Diaghilev, this comprehensive treatment of one of history’s most captivating, elegant, and complex fashion and business leaders will be appreciated by history aficionados, fashion industry devotees, and anyone who enjoys a fine fragrance and a good story.
