Billie Lourd Remembers Carrie Fisher While ‘Sending All My Love’ to Those Struggling on Mother’s Day

Billie Lourd has an uplifting message for anybody out there who’s lost their mother: You’re not alone.

On the second Mother’s Day since her mom Carrie Fisher died, the 25-year-old reached out to anybody “having a less than perfect Mother’s Day today.”

“We are not alone. Sending all my love and strength to anyone who needs it. 🙏🏼,” Lourd continued, sharing her message alongside a loving snapshot of her and Fisher.

In the photo, the American Horror Story: Cult actress sits beside her mother on a tiny chair, while Fisher wraps her arms around her daughter.

Fisher was flying from London to Los Angeles on Dec. 23, 2016, when she went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics removed her from the flight and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for a heart attack. She died in the hospital four days later.

Before her mother’s death, both mother and daughter were able to work together on Fisher’s last film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Commemorating the one-year anniversary of her mother’s death last December, Lourd and her father, Bryan Lourd, took a special trip to see the northern lights in Norway.

“My momby had an otherworldly obsession with the northern lights, but I never got to see them with her,” Lourd wrote next to two pictures showing green flashes lighting up the sky. “We journeyed to northern Norway to see if we might ‘see the heavens lift up her dark skirts and flash her dazzling privates across unworthy irises.’ And she did.”

“I love you times infinity,” she concluded.

When the pinch hitter at the 40th annual Mother’s Day Luncheon happens to be Bill Clinton, the 42nd U.S. president, one can’t be too disappointed.
His daughter, Chelsea Clinton, one of the recipients of the Outstanding Mother Awards, was stuck in Omaha, Neb., and couldn’t get a plane out, so her father happily obliged to accept the award on her behalf.
Clinton told some endearing stories about his daughter, who is vice chair of the Clinton Foundation.
“Here’s what I’d like you to know about my child. In some ways she had a remarkably privileged upbringing though we weren’t wealthy by conventional standards until I got out of the White House. I had the lowest net worth of any president ever elected since World War II. I was governor for 12 years, but it was always tough,” said Clinton. He explained that Chelsea started reading the newspaper at six years old and he was in a very hot reelection campaign, and she read things that people were saying about him.

Aerie Role Models’ Mothers Appear in New Campaign

Who do role models consider their role models?
For aerie’s role models, who include actress Yara Shahidi, gold medal gymnast Aly Raisman, and curvy model and body activist Iskra Lawrence, the answer is simple: their mothers.

“We decided to include mothers in the campaign because when we asked our role models who inspires them, their mothers was their number one answer,” said Jen Foyle, aerie global brand president. “And aerie is designed to be worn by any age.”
Shahidi was joined by Keri Shahidi, Raisman posed with her mother, Lynn Raisman and sister Chloe Raisman, and Lawrence took pictures with Wilma Lawrence wearing aerie’s swimwear.

According to Foyle, aerie, which has pushed self-love and empowerment with a no-retouching policy on imagery, these campaigns have had a positive effect on the bottom line. Aerie is up double digits over the last year and saw a large spark within the 30 days of launching the Aerie Real Role Model campaign. The innerwear brand is set to open a store in New York’s SoHo in mid-June.

Five Mothers Dress As Disney Princesses For Magical Maternity Shoot

Victor and Marie Luna, a husband-wife photography team in Texas, might have come up with the most magical maternity shoot ever.

On April 7, Victor, a photographer, and Marie, a photo editor, went to Newman’s Castle in Bellville, Texas, for a maternity shoot with five women. The theme? Disney princesses.

The couple was first inspired by the new popularity of “Beauty and the Beast” and then decided to expand their idea. 

“It started out with a Belle-inspired shoot, but as we talked about the ideas and planned it, the more we wanted to go outside of our own element,” the couple told HuffPost. “That is where the group shot of the Disney-inspired photo shoot with all the princesses came to be.”

For the shoot, the mothers (who were either previous clients or models) dressed as Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog,” Snow White, Cinderella, Belle from “Beauty and the Beast” and Jasmine from “Aladdin.” Sew Trendy Accessories, a business that makes handmade maternity gowns, provided the dresses.

Victor and Marie told HuffPost that they aligned the “beautiful mommies” with the princesses they thought they represented. They also described the shoot as “a mix of magic and chaos.”

“Between the wardrobe changes, the makeup retouches, the pee breaks, and one mommy close to giving birth, we managed to make it come together beautifully,” they said.

The couple didn’t want to dive too deep into the characters, but did add a few touches to the shoot like ribbons, headpieces and flowers to represent the princesses. For example, the mom who dressed as Cinderella held a glass slipper for some of her photos. 

The moms in the shoot were “incredibly excited” to see the final results, according to the couple, and Victor and Marie said they were happy to make the moms feel like Disney royalty for the day.

“When we noticed that a few people started to share the photos, our mommies would get in contact with us to let us know that they were famous!” they said. “It made us feel so happy that they were feeling like actual princesses.”

Janelle Monáe Shares Powerful Moment With Mothers Of The Movement

Janelle Monáe is ready to fem the future, and the Mothers of the Movement are joining her. 

During Saturday’s Women’s March demonstration in Washington, DC, actress and singer Monae delivered warned the new presidential administration to respect women and “get off our areolas and get off our vaginas.”

“It was woman that gave you Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,” Monáe said.

“It was woman that gave you Malcolm X.  And according to the bible, it was a woman who gave us Jesus… We birthed this nation and we can unbirth it when we want to.”

Calling for the protestors to fight against systemic abuse of power, performed a call-and-response song called “Hell You Talmbout,” encouraging the crowd to say the names of black women like Sandra Bland and Maya Young who have died as a result of police encounters, sexual violence, and transphobia. 

Monáe made a statement against police brutality when she invited the Mothers of the Movement (Sybrina Fulton, Lucy McBath, Maria Hamilton, Gwen Carr),  to chant their slain son’s names as the crowd chanted: “Say his name!”

From multidisciplinary perspectives, this volume explores the roles mothers play in the producing, purchasing, preparing and serving of food to their own families and to their communities in a variety of contexts. Feeling Entitled to a Little Gratitude This Mother’s Day?

Here’s an icky confession: Since becoming a mother, I have dreaded Mother’s Day.

The whole holiday has, somehow, left me feeling unappreciated. I’ve tended to get in a funk, and not out of grief or some sort of well-defined pain — I can only imagine how hard Mother’s Day must be for someone who has lost their mother. I feel bad in a bratty way, like a toddler who is pissed that she’s not getting what she wants. The worst version of myself has typically made her appearance, ironically, on the day that we were supposed to be celebrating my best, most beloved, self.

What is it that has left me so resentful on Mother’s Day? What have I wanted so much that I haven’t been getting?

Until about an hour ago, I thought it was about gratitude. I wanted to be appreciated on Mother’s Day in the way that we used to show appreciation to my mother. Research shows that when we express gratitude in our relationships, we become more attuned to our family member’s efforts on our behalf. I was hoping for a little more attunement to all the work I do as a mom — mostly from my husband, but also the kids.

At least the way I remember it (I’m a little afraid to ask my mom for verification; it just now occurred to me that my memory is probably a little rosy), we’d bring my mom breakfast in bed, showering her with homemade cards and gifts. My dad would give my mom a funny card and a gift that he’d bought. We’d take a family bike ride on the path around St. Mary’s College, with a picnic that my dad and I packed with help from the deli at Black’s Market. Norman Rockwell could’ve painted us.

None of that actually seems hard to recreate, but for the love of God my family has never even come close. Last year I laid out my expectations clearly for my husband. “I’m fine with no gifts,” I explained, “So long as there are cards and a family activity.” This did not happen. With four active teenagers and a husband who refuses to plan anything more than a day in advance, our only family outings are planned by me.

For the record, three of the four children made me BEAUTIFUL, heartfelt Mother’s Day cards. Kelly-Corrigan-level cards. They were practically set to music they were so thoughtful and moving.

But that was not enough for me.

Expectations are a tricky thing. Unfulfilled, they set us up to ruin what is actually happening by ruminating over what we think ought to be happening. Painful thoughts — How could he not do this for me given all I do for this family??! Does he not appreciate me at all?start to loop endlessly, triggering waves of disappointment.

So how could I make this year different? I already lowered my expectations to no material gifts, and that didn’t help me much; I’m not sure I can lower them to nothing. In past years, I’ve made a massive effort to focus on myself less by helping others, but ultimately, even that didn’t really prevent me from feeling unappreciated myself. I felt entitled to a little gratitude, damnit.

(Let’s not miss the irony here: Entitlement is pretty much the opposite of gratitude. Rarely do we attract the opposite of what we feel. Just as we don’t foster other people’s love by lashing out at them, my unbridled sense of entitlement wasn’t exactly generating a mountain of appreciation.)

Emotional traps like this — obsessing over my feelings of unmet expectations — are usually triggered by a mistaken belief. So where was the error in my thinking?

I really was feeling unappreciated by Mark, my husband. I felt like I sacrificed more for our family and children, and that he should recognize and feel grateful for that. I held a deep seated conviction that I gave more. I spent more time doing the hardest parenting work, creating and enforcing structure and discipline, managing the near-constant drama of life with three teenage girls and an active adolescent boy.

Now, I should mention that, according to research, I am not alone in believing that I do more for our family than my husband — but I might not be correct. When researchers add up the percent of work each person in a couple says he or she does, they consistently find that the total ends up being more than 100 percent. So if a mom says she does 65 percent of the household work, and her husband says he contributes a solid 50 percent… there is a 15 percent error in there somewhere. Perhaps this was the heart of my mistaken belief?

My Mother’s Day funk did grow out of my belief that I do and sacrifice more for our family than Mark does. And weirdly, I somehow thought that this seemingly massive imbalance could be righted through a Mother’s Day display of profound appreciation.

This is funny to me now, because clearly even the most magical Mother’s Day outing would not dissolve my resentment. We needed to deal with the source of my resentment.

“We need counseling,” I announced to Mark. I sat down to work through what I wanted help resolving. What did I want Mark to do differently?

What I found, when I really thought hard about it, was that my assumptions about our division of labor were blatantly untrue. Believe me, I was shocked by this revelation. But it turned out that I had loads of evidence suggesting I don’t do more for our family than Mark.

True, I do the bulk of the emotional labor. But he does nearly all the house and garden maintenance. We spend about the same amount of time in the car driving kids around. I plan our meals and cook; he shops and cleans up. We’ve got a division of labor where he does the things he likes to do best (like mowing the lawn) while I get to do the things that I love to do (like talking to the kids about their feelings). I am lucky to have a truly equal partnership.

I was harboring resentment out of habit rather than reality. At times, being a mother can feel so overwhelming; when the kids were little, I sometimes felt a little victimized by it all, a little trapped by the sheer magnitude of the way they’d taken over my life. My husband simply couldn’t do many of the things that I was doing. Pregnancy, labor and delivery, and breastfeeding bred loads of occasions when only mama would do. My family could never repay me for the sacrifices I’d made for them — but they could, and should, show me a little gratitude for it. Hence my feelings of entitlement to a little Mother’s Day appreciation.

Billy Collin’s wrote a poem about this. In it, Collins recounts the thousands of meals his mom made him, and the good education she provided, and all the other zillions of things she did for him. In return he gave her… a lanyard he made at camp. Collins concludes:

And here, I wish to say to her now,

is a smaller gift — not the worn truth

that you can never repay your mother,

but the rueful admission that when she took

the two-tone lanyard from my hand,

I was as sure as a boy could be

that this useless, worthless thing I wove

out of boredom would be enough to make us even.

Now, this is what I wish to tell my children and husband both: We are even, with or without lanyards and family outings on Mother’s Day.

Because I am not trapped. I have not been victimized. There is no need for reparation. You don’t owe me a darn thing, even gratitude. I don’t have to do any of the many things I do for you or our family. I choose to do them. I do them because I love each of you so very much. Moreover, this love that I feel for you is the greatest gift I’ve ever been given. It is a great joy to be a mother in this family, your family. I’m deeply, profoundly grateful for all we are and all we have — together.

‘Mother’s Day’ Is Not a Reason to Celebrate

“Mother’s Day” (Open Road Films)

Garry Marshall is a Hollywood legend. He is the man who brought us “Laverne & Shirley,” “Happy Days” and many more TV hits. He also brought to the screen “Pretty Woman,” “The Princess Diaries,” “Beaches” and other solidly entertaining movies. Recently he has been on a holiday themed series of movies that has included “New Year’s Eve” and “Valentine’s Day.” The latest in this series is a star packed film titled “Mother’s Day.” It has all the glossy appeal of his other projects but somehow the magic has seeped out.

As is his way, Marshall has several diverse stories going at the same time but they are all somehow connected. Jesse (Kate Hudson) appears to be the connecting character in this movie. She and her sister Gabi (Sarah Chalke) live across the street from each other. They are best friends as well as sister’s and share the secrets that they have kept from their parents (Robert Pine and Margo Martindale).

Jesse is also best friends with Sandy (Jennifer Aniston), a divorced mother of two sons. Her ex, Henry (Timothy Olyphant), suddenly announces he has gotten married to a woman half his age named Tina (Shay Mitchell). This new “mom’ situation does not go over well with Sandy.

Meanwhile Jesse has another friend Kristen (Britt Robertson) who is in a relationship with a stand up comic named Zack (Jack Whitehall). They have a daughter but Kristen is avoiding marriage like the plague. She was adopted as a child and now has abandonment issues.

The guy who runs the gym where Sandy has signed up for yoga classes is named Bradley (Jason Sudeikis) and his life is very complicated. His Army soldier wife Dana (Jennifer Garner) was killed in combat and he is now raising their two daughters alone. Being a new widower causes him to be overprotective of his girls.

Add to this mix a business woman named Miranda (Julia Roberts) who sells products on HSN and lives in Atlanta where everyone else also lives. They all see her on TV and Sandy is even trying to get a job with her company. Miranda has never been married but any fool can plainly see within ten minutes there is a family in her future.

Marshall has to keep all of these plot lines juggling in the air, and he has shown in the past he can do that with ease. But not in this movie and not with this cast. Most of the storylines feel contrived, and most of the emotional punches of the script are cheesy. The relationship section of the film concerning the two sisters and their bigoted parents seems overly forced, and the reconciliation seems like a pathetic fairy tale.

The highlight of the movie is Aniston’s character and performance. Watching “Sandy” is like watching an episode of “Friends” ten years later and Rachel Green is the star. She is still cuter than cute and delightful in every way. Julia Roberts still has her acting chops but her storyline is weak and they have done everything they could to make her look older and matronly. Plus in the early scenes it is revealed her character might be a, gulp, grandmother. I am old, you are old, we are all old!!!!

The film is rated PG-13 for profanity (more than you expect) and adult situations.

There is a lot of talent on display and some of the scenes tug at the heartstrings, but overall this is mediocre moviemaking at best.

I scored “Mother’s Day” a less than celebratory 5 out of 10.

Here’s What Happened When Daughters Gave Their Mothers Makeovers

As we get older, comfort and convenience might take precedence over the stylish trends that we religiously followed when we were younger. There’s nothing wrong with that — until one day you look in the mirror and realize you’ve been sporting the same hairstyle and makeup for years.

Refinery 29 challenged some older moms to let their daughters revamp their look with some edgy makeovers. 

The daughters’ task? To take their mothers outside their comfort zones. 

Would you trust your kids to give you a makeover? We think one mom put it best: “Just don’t make me look ridiculous, that’s all.”

Different silhouettes, lace and a little leather were all part of the mix.

I Never Experienced Parenthood Until I Became My Mother’s Caretaker

By the time I was 20, I was sure having children wasn’t for me. It was a conscious decision, but to fully understand the reason why, not so simple. To this day, I cannot fully answer why my desire was to live my life childless. I have no regrets with that life choice or any others I have made along the way.

How could I have known at 54 years old the essence of a child would enter my life in the guise of a mother challenged by Alzheimer’s? I did not ask for this, but it is the current chapter of my life. What this flip-flopped role of daughter becoming mother has shown me is what a wonderful mother I would have been… what a wonderful “mother” I am!

My role reversal with mom is nothing short of amazing. The dynamic of being thrust into this “parental” role is life-changing. I have learned to embrace this frail being whose existence has become dependency and helplessness. Her emotional tantrums that seem to flair up when things don’t go just as she expected. No fault of her own, of course, just another result of the disconnect in her thought process from her disease.

How could I have known at 54 years old the essence of a child would enter my life in the guise of a mother challenged by Alzheimer’s?

Preparing healthy meals and snacks and administering medications are daily affairs. Gently cleansing her 86 year old body in lavender suds as she clings to me in the shower. Pulling her outfits out for the day and often getting vetoed by her for my blouse or trouser choice due to color or fabric. Transporting her to appointments and engagements to keep her healthy. Scolding her for mishaps, only to later embrace her with warm hugs and apologies. Washing her clothes, paying the bills, cleaning our home to make her feel safe and secure.

It is truly like raising a child.

There is only one difference and it is a very big one. As our parents did all these wondrous life caring tasks for us as children, we learned just how truly fortunate we were. As we aged, we gained a deep and loving appreciation for them that would grow as we grew. We learned how to reward their efforts by making them proud of us with our journeys in life.

With the Alzheimer’s “child,” the “parent” and their care are usually forgotten in the flash of a moment. They live in the moment, but as it slides past, they have no recollection of the delicious dinner or the warm towel wrapped around them after their shower. They don’t remember who the gift was from at Christmas or that the cake was in celebration of their birthday. They cannot be thankful for their caregivers attention to the administering of medication because as soon as they swallow the pills they have forgotten they have been given them.

Looking into her sweet, sunken eyes and knowing she is safe is enough reward for me.

It certainly is not that they don’t appreciate you as you place their dinner upon the flowered placemat or apply the moisturizer to their dry winter skin or clean the lenses on their eyeglasses. It’s just as soon as you finish this caring gesture, in their afflicted mind, it is gone. They don’t remember any of it.

So my “child” does not strive to make me proud with good grades or personal accomplishments. She just needs me. She needs my mind for hers is failing. And my “child” does not need to make me proud, for my pride comes in knowing I am doing the best I can for her. I do not need accolades. Looking into her sweet, sunken eyes and knowing she is safe is enough reward for me.

And as I tuck her into bed this evening and kiss her on the forehead, I will turn out the light knowing I was the best “mother” I could be.

To My Friends Who Still Have Their Mothers

Dear friends who still have their mothers,

It came like a thief — 10 months almost exactly from the day she was diagnosed until the day she left us. Cancer has a way of doing that, robbing its victims and their families of health and freedom. One day we’re doing life together, making plans for the future — and the next we’re fighting this battle and eventually saying goodbye.

I never imagined I’d lose my mom this way or so soon. I couldn’t have planned or prepared for it. Her fate swooped in like a thief and took her away before I ever had the chance to fully realize what was happening.

And because of my faith I stand with peace and continue to hope but still…

This Mother’s Day, I am — for the first time — a mom without a mother. I will receive cards and gifts and lots of love, but I cannot give them. I cannot express my gratitude, despite her imperfections, with lavish love. I cannot thank her for all she taught me about being a mom, both good and bad. I cannot share how much she’s impacted my life, as a mom and a wife and a woman.

So dear friends who still have their mothers,

Whether you walk extremely close or there’s a valley of difference between you, reach out to your mother this week.

Whether you see eye to eye or you can’t agree on much of anything, look your mother in the eyes if you can and tell her how special she is.

Whether she’s loved you well or lacked in affection, tell her how much you appreciate her and linger in love through words or embrace.

Whether she’s been your role model or she’s shown you what not to do, tell her how much you’ve learned from her.

Whether she’s been a near perfect mother or a much less than perfect one, she’s still here and that fact alone leaves so much potential for you both.

Call her, embrace her, surround her with your love whether it comes easy or along with tons of baggage.

Reach out for reconciliation if you are estranged.

Reach out in compromise if you are indifferent.

Reach out with time and attention if you are busy.

Reach out with affection if you are reserved.

Reach out with generous love even if you already do it regularly.

This time last year, I never dreamed I’d spend Mother’s Day without my mom. Please, don’t let another day slip by without connecting with yours.

Happy Mother’s Day, friends. May you find grace to give and receive so much love.

Moms In Need Get Clothing, Toiletries For Their Families Just In Time For Mother’s Day

Movers around the country are helping to get essential items to mothers in need, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Two Men and a Truck, a moving company, has been hosting annual donation drives across the U.S. for mothers at partnering women’s and family shelters as part of an initiative called “Movers for Moms.” The group is delivering the items, which will include clothing and toiletries, around Sunday.

One homeless mother who requested to be anonymous is currently staying at the Druid House in Baltimore, one of the shelters involved. She told HuffPost that the initiative is more than a nice gesture.

“Especially as mothers with children, we don’t want [our children] to see us struggling with the basic needs,” she said. “When somebody has made that effort to provide those things to you … it might seem like something so small but it really gets rid of some of the concern and the stresses.”

A variety of organizations, schools and local businesses are working with Two Men and a Truck to contribute items or serve as donation drop-off locations, according to a representative of the company. Items donated can range from basic clothing like underwear or socks, to hygiene products such as toothpaste and soap. Last year, Movers for Moms donated 220,000 goods to mothers in need, a press release pointed out.

The Druid House resident told HuffPost that buying items like toothpaste and soap isn’t so simple for people in her position. She explained that because people at the shelter may have difficulty traveling to a convenience store, or have little income, some of these products are not as accessible as one may think.

“You’re thinking ‘How are you gonna get it” or ‘Where are you gonna get it?’ ‘How are you going to afford it?’ ‘How are you going to get to the store?'” she told HuffPost of the complications preventing her from purchasing necessities.

The resident told HuffPost that she’s grateful for the donations, and it’s a moving thought to know that people are willing to help her and others in need.

“When people work together to do those things, it really lets you know that somebody cares. And the children feel it too,” she said. “They are so happy and excited when they know somebody is caring about them, and sometimes you just need to know that.”

Kanye West Bought Kim Kardashian ‘A Couple Thousand’ Roses For Mother’s Day

Even though Kim Kardashian is spending Mother’s Day in Brazil, away from husband Kanye West and their 1-year-old daughter, North, the rapper made sure his wife felt appreciated on the special holiday.

The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star shared a photo of a room filled with bouquets of white roses to her Instagram account Sunday, writing:

I got to my room in Brazil and my amazing thoughtful husband had the sweetest note with a couple thousand roses covering my entire suite for Mothers Day! I’m so sad I’m so far away on this day but happy we celebrated yesterday! I love you baby & North soooo much!!!



Sweet? Yes. Over the top? Maybe. Surprising? Not really, especially considering what the rapper got for Kardashian on this day last year:

Mixed Feelings About Mothers’ Day

Mother’s Day was created, probably by Hallmark Cards, to honor our mothers. I’ve never taken the day too seriously, but lately I find it more compelling. I am a mother and a grandmother and my mother is still alive. She has lived a long life. She’s the first to tell you she’s outlived her time. She’s 95 years old. The way she sees it her body is “disgustingly healthy, but her mind is another matter.” She has advanced dementia. As Mother’s Day has come and gone, I have my own conflicted feelings about Mom’s long life. I prefer not to examine her mind, as it can be painful to focus on that. Rather, I will tell you about her feet.

Mom’s attitude toward her feet is a jumble of contradictions. Going barefoot has always been her preference at all times, in all places, at each stage of her long life. She delights in people’s reactions to her naked toes when she roams the long hallways of her most recent home in an assisted living retirement facility. The friendly nursing aides react with an amused air of disapproval,

“Ms. Fleisher, where do you think you’re going? You need to put on your shoes!”

“Why?” she responds, “I’m not going anywhere.”

Throughout her adult life, she would go outside in winter all bundled up, a petite woman swathed in a long heavy sheepskin coat with curly fur around her neck. But, those tiny pale feet were always bone bare inside her wooden clogs.

Always one to be dressed in the latest style, her shoes were all the rage, but often raised eyebrows when worn by someone her age. Four-inch wooden platform open-toed shoes held in place by a single leather strap were the shoes of choice at her granddaughter’s out-door wedding. Everyone in attendance held their breath as my 83 year old mother hobbled along the rutted dirt path leading to the wedding tent–in the rain, clasping her son’s arm for balance. By the middle of the ceremony her feet were bare, and with assistance, she made her way back to the car gingerly stepping through mud and gravel. Age never was a factor for her when choosing what should adorn her feet.

Now in her mid nineties, she’s a feisty tiny woman with clumps of gray thinning hair. She may not remember what she ate two minutes ago, but she has glowing memories of her athletic prowess in adolescence. Her blue eyes, framed by deep laugh lines, sparkle proudly when she tells stories of her number one seeded position on the district tennis ladder. She was known as the girl who played barefoot on the manicured grass courts reserved for the top ranked tennis matches. Her bare feet carry a message of pride and rebellion. “I’ll be damned if you are going to tell me what to do!”

On close inspection, her feet are a curious oddity. Her big toes are small, but strong. And each toe thereafter is bent toward the outside edge of the foot, as if broken at mid-point. “Ugly!” is what she calls them. Ugly, like the way she feels about the rest of her small muscular body with a belly that is always too big. Ugly may be her descriptor, but she flaunts those feet openly in public as if to say, “They may be ugly, but they are strong and proud and free-spirited. They never did enough for me to love them, but if I could have I would have.”

As I’ve watched my mother grow old I realize how little control we have about how long we are fated to live. I’ve changed my thinking about the goal of a long life. Quality of life is more important to me. And how much control do we have over that? Still, I hope I will have the kind of spirit and pride Mom shows the world despite her certainty that she has outlived her time.

Grateful for My Mom’s Legacy this Mother’s Day

As both a mom and a daughter whose mother has passed away, Mother’s Day is always a bittersweet time for me. While I enjoy being celebrated by my son and husband, I miss my mother dearly. Each day of my life her legacy and influence live on through my parenting, family traditions, cooking, education and style. So many of our viewers reach out to me asking about the necklaces I wear on my show. What they might not know is that my mother is the inspiration behind the statement necklaces I wear each day.

I have to wear a robe, but I still like to be a jazzy judge! I inherited my love of jewelry and interesting statement necklaces from my mom. My late mother was very stylish in an understated, classy way, but she loved wearing beautiful, interesting neckpieces. A bold necklace is a great way to create a stylish focal point for any kind of outfit.

I carry on my mother’s flair for fashion by wearing some of her pieces and designing almost all of the others. And, almost every piece I have worn on the show is a one-of-a-kind creation. For me, the necklaces hold a special meaning and are more than just a fashionable piece of jewelry. My necklaces not only remind me of my mother, they are a symbol and reflection of the colorful, bold, unique woman she raised me to be. All of the words of encouragement and affirmation concerning my necklaces has inspired me to create a line of necklaces and other statement pieces.

Happy Mother’s Day!

What is a Mother? A mother has soft hands and smells good; she likes new clothes, music and a clean house and above all loves the hugs and kisses of her children. She does not like to see her children sick, with muddy feet, temper tantrums, loud voices and bad report cards. She can bake good cakes and pies but likes to see her children eat vegetables. She is someone who is underpaid, works long hours and gets very little rest. She worries a lot about her children, no matter how old her children are, she does not seem to mind at all.

A mother is the Guardian Angel of the family, the queen, the untiring supplier of unconditional love; she will always be our best friend forever and the only one who can make our households-our homes!

In big ways and small, mothers always seem to know exactly what to do to help and guide us through our lives. Call it wisdom, call it unconditional love – whatever it is, mothers really do have a special gift. The incredible effort that they make in raising children without complaint is in itself quite unbelievable.

When it comes to my own memories about my mother, I recall her innocence, her loving nature, her childlike curiosity and appreciation of new experiences and sensations.
It was as if the child within her had never been lost! She was just a pure, beautiful and loving soul who was dedicated to making everyone around her feel good.

When I was a child, my mother seemed to have a quick cure for all my ailments, tiny scratches and even big bruises. I missed that, once I had to be away from her to get on with the business of adulthood.

I missed her most when I suffered my first heart attack. Although she would have been beside herself if she had witnessed this event, nonetheless, I wished and thought about no one else except my mother. Modern society deems it unnatural and unmanly to openly express the love for our mothers. I dare to suggest quite to the contrary, it takes a real man to be sincere in his love for that one person who introduced him to the world! Who could be more important?

After returning home after the hospital stay, I wanted to re-evaluate my blessings, and focus on all the positive things in my life. There was a small piece of paper that became a gentle foundation for this goal, a handwritten entry from my late mother’s diary. A couple of years after my mother had passed away, my two sisters were looking through her possessions deciding what to give away and what to keep. In the closet, they came across a small diary, through which, out of curiosity, they began to browse, flipping the pages, pausing to read here and there. One page caught their eye–it was an entry about me. She had written about how much happiness I had brought into her life, how I had never talked back or raised my voice to her. Essentially, she was honoring me by reciting the little things that I had done to give her joy. The page ended with prayers and blessings for me now and in the afterlife.

Immediately, my sisters made a photocopy and sent it to me. As I read it, I felt the simplicity and sincerity of her words. The journal entry was not a reaction to having received a nice gift, card, or phone call from me. It was not intended to impress anyone or to ask a favor. It was just a note jotted down during her quiet moments as she mused privately over our relationship as mother and son. It was merely an evanescent acknowledgement passing through her heart, penned onto the pages of her private diary. I folded it carefully and tucked it away in a special spot so that I could retrieve it during difficult and discouraging times in my life when I might need some uplifting. I now cherish this little document as the very best Letter of Recommendation I have ever received among a file folder of accolades from high-level management over the years.

No matter what unwise decisions I had made, my mom had supported me every single time, with no questions asked. She trusted me more than I trusted myself. I believe in unconditional love and living in the moment-this I learned from my Mom. I honor your memories Mom, every day and on this Mother’s Day with love in my heart and with never ending gratitude in my soul.

Celebrating Mother’s Day As a Motherless Daughter

Mother’s Day. A time of celebrating the amazing woman who gave you life, nurtured and inspired you. Your biggest supporter and fiercest defender.

Like myself and many of my clients, I have spent much of my life grieving for that mother. Not because she died, but because she never existed.

How do you celebrate your mother when she is no longer in your life, either by death or choice?

As a coach and former therapist, I have worked with countless women whose relationships with their mothers have been anything but the ideal depicted on greeting cards.

In these cases, Mother’s Day can be a day of disappointment, loss, and reminders of what you don’t have.

Family dysfunction can take on many forms. In my work, some common themes are a mother who didn’t pay attention to signs of abuse; dismissed her child’s (subtle or direct) cry for help; created an environment of neglect; and sometimes struggled with her own mental health issues.

There are times it is necessary to step back or end a relationship with your mother for the benefit of your own emotional health, well-being, and happiness. While it is generally a very difficult decision, fraught with fear and guilt, sometimes it is necessary.

Finding a way to set boundaries and grieving the loss of a relationship you never really had is an important part of healing from childhood abuse and dysfunction.

In my case, I grieve the mother I never had, due to chronic depression leading to neglect and the one who died when I was 23. I will never have the opportunity to have that relationship.

While you may never have that relationship with your mother, it is possible to experience nurturing relationships with people who inspire you and become your biggest supporter and fiercest defender. You just have to allow yourself the time to grieve and be open to allowing those people in your life.

Here’s Why I Am My Mother’s Daughter

I was nothing like my mother. She was shy and elegant. She covered her mouth when she laughed.

She didn’t understand how someone like her could have given birth to someone like me. She didn’t understand where my confidence came from, or how, at five years old, I could have an opinion about the kind of car I’d prefer to be driven in to nursery school. A coupe.

She said she was never scared for me because I was tough.

That I’d get what I wanted out of life because I wouldn’t settle for anything less. That no one would ever take advantage of me — and good luck to the person who tried.

My mother told me to understand that not everyone would like me, but I would be deeply loved by those who did. She told me to always be compassionate; that was my weakness. To be compassionate with people who were weaker, or meeker, or just scared of life. To have compassion for people who weren’t as brave.

She told me to be gentler with my older sister, because she wasn’t built like me; she was more sensitive. That, even though I was the youngest, my sense of self was the strongest. When I’d complain that it was my sister’s fault for not standing her ground, she would reply, “Wouldn’t you get out of the way if you saw you coming?”

My mother knew who I was before I did.

She said I was my father’s daughter.

A few days before she died, my mom grabbed my hand and said, “Please take care of your brothers and sisters, because I know you’ll be able to one day. Keep our family together.” And then added, “your father’s a huge pain in the ass, by the way… You’ll see.”

She died when she was 66, with five of her children holding her hand. Only one of us was missing that day in the room we all sat in, though I knew deep in my heart that he too was there to take her hand the moment it slid out of ours.

He was her oldest, her firstborn. She had had to live through that loss and continue loving us.

I don’t know enough to understand what that must be like for a parent. Or what it means to be a parent, for that matter. But, I do know what it’s like to be loved, because my mother showed me what that meant, even when she should have been out of love herself.

She said that being a mother was like getting your heart broken a million times a day…

Mom,

I’m 40 now, an age I never thought I’d be.

I hope you’re smiling at me with that flirty little “I’ve eaten something I shouldn’t have eaten” smile. My version of that little smile usually implies something much more naughty than a Snicker’s bar, but you already know that.

There have been days that I’ve picked up the phone to call you, and then remembered. But it doesn’t matter, because I know you’re here. I still feel you.

I did everything you asked me to do. I haven’t exactly nailed the “compassion” part, but I think about it every day, and then, I try again.

You were right. About everything. You knew me before I knew me.

You were right about Dad.

I’m smiling back at you. For the love, the adoration and the belief.

I believe in you, too.

My heart is full.

I know now that I am my mother’s daughter.

To every mother on Mother’s Day.

I Am An Invisible Mom: A Mother’s Day Love Story For My Stillborn Son

I spent last Mother’s Day lounging on a picnic blanket under the sunny skies of the Boston Harbor — so sunny, in fact, that my husband and I sought out one of the only meager trees atop Spectacle Island for shade. It can often be cool in early May in Boston, but on this day, the heat bore down. At 16 weeks pregnant, the shape of my rounded belly under my striped sundress was only obvious to those in our inner circle who knew we were expecting. The word itself — expecting — pregnant with meaning. We were expecting so many things on that Sunday afternoon: Our first child to join our family in the fall. A little boy.

I consider myself an invisible mom; identifying with emotions of motherhood without the visible passport. I cannot take my son to the park or feed him in the wee hours or read him a bedtime story. As a culture that values tangibles, I do not fit into any recognizable group. If I answer that I have kids (a question I’m asked all too often), it’s assumed that I have a living child. The follow-up conversation is just too intense, too blunt, that I simply cannot stand to burden the person asking such a standard question with such a heavy answer. But responding that I do not have children discredits the time I spent loving my son, caring for him and nurturing him as all moms do. That answer minimizes his life. And boy, his life was anything but small by measure of how it has impacted mine.

Us invisible moms are everywhere, part of a compulsory club of which none of us wants to be a member. But unlike other moms, there are not playdates or moms groups or school meetings for our kind. We so often live our life in isolation, alienated by very holidays like Mother’s Day, where sitting at brunch alongside bustling families is pure torture. There will be no handmade card or mother’s ring or any of the hallmarks that Hallmark make standard for this second Sunday in May.

But as a mom, even an invisible one, I have a love story. After all, that’s what moms do. We love, unconditionally.

On an early June evening at a restaurant overlooking the Bosphorus Straight in Istanbul, we decided that we were ready to start our family. It was 2011 and we were entering our fourth year of marriage, having spent the first three years enjoying our young relationship and establishing our careers. But the summer came and went, and so did the one after that. We saw a fertility doctor, learned that things were sub-optimal but not dismal, and drew up a treatment plan. Month after month of treatments, each one more invasive than the last. Nothing. But we were great candidates from IVF, and I just knew that would work. I still felt a sense of control here — if I can just endure the physical and emotional gauntlet that is IVF, I know we will be rewarded with a baby.

And rewarded we were! In mid-February of last year, we learned we were finally pregnant. We met our baby at our four-week ultrasound where we very clearly we watched a mighty heart flicker rapidly on the screen. This heart was contained in a body no bigger than a grain of rice. Awestruck love. There are simply no words to describe the emotion of that experience; watching a beating heart inside of my body that will one day power our child. Power him while he chases the cat or does cartwheels in the front lawn or takes a nap in his sunlit nursery. Beat strongly as he walks to his first day of kindergarten or falls for his first crush or marries and has children of his own. That little flicker will be there through everything. After we left the doctor we could not stop gushing about that little flicker — our little Flicker — and thus his nickname was born.

Late on a Friday afternoon in April, we went to the doctor for the ever-important 12-week ultrasound, a date that so many circle on their calendar as the first big landmark in a healthy pregnancy. The ultrasound technician read the images, but uncharacteristically left the room for what seemed like an eternity. She returned, accompanied by our doctor, who assured us that there was likely nothing wrong. A strange shadow on the grainy ultrasound raised some alarm, but don’t panic; it’s probably just the placenta. But if we want to be 100% sure going into the sunny weekend, we can head to high resolution imaging and get a cleaner look.

It will put our minds at ease, she said.

We left in silence, and for the next hour I lay on the examination table feeling utterly helpless as an awful doctor proceeded to shake her head over and over again. All loaded sighs and furrowed brows. “Something is just not right,” she said repeatedly once she finally found her words. She arranged an appointment for first thing Monday morning at one of Boston’s leading maternal fetal medicine hospitals and sent us on our way.

We were not at ease.

We left that afternoon a ball of chaos, shaken to the core, questioning everything. We questioned God. We questioned what we did wrong. We questioned whether the doctor could possibly be right. She had to be wrong. This had to be a mistake. We talked with our families and pastors and friends over that weekend. We prayed and processed and speculated during a long walk around Walden Pond, Thoreau’s sacred retreat.

Coming out of all of our conversations from that surreal weekend, it seemed that everyone had a horror story of their own or of a one-degree connection in which they received a bad pregnancy prognosis, only to point out their beautiful son or daughter playing in the next room. While we weren’t counting on the doctor we would see Monday saying “just kidding, he is perfect,” we had come to terms with the possibility of raising a child with special needs or having to manage a high-risk pregnancy. Hope rippled, but not ruffled.

We walked in to that appointment unified and resolute. But I laid down for the ultrasound, and within 15 seconds the head of maternal fetal medicine looked me in the eye and said “incompatible with life.”

The agony that followed involved genetic counselors and placenta biopsies and waiting for tests. We learned were having a boy. And his chromosomes were perfect. His heart was strong and his brain was developing. But his spine was bent and he had no abdominal wall; his feet were clubbed and he had a cleft palate. The list of issues kept growing and my hope kept shrinking until we got our final diagnosis — limb body-wall complex. “Don’t Google it,” the doctor warned. But of course I did. And I cried for days. A lightning-strike rare condition that had no genetic link, no known cause, no available treatment, and no survivors. There were so few documented cases of this condition that our doctors could assure us of nothing. I might miscarry tomorrow. I might carry to full term. Flicker might be born alive and never take a breath, or he could be born still. We were essentially sent home to wait again; but this time wait for our son to die.

Where is the love in that?

When I think about all the ways that people can show love to one another, it’s generally through some combination of action, word or in our culture, gift. My husband and I are not big gift people, typically choosing instead to communicate love through everyday word and action. He is a big fan of food, so a well-cooked meal prepared with his favorite ingredients is one way that I show love. Meanwhile, he knows that I do not like doing dishes, so after the meal is cooked he springs into action to clean up the mess, a definitive showing of his love to me. It is not the stuff of storybooks, but it’s how our love works. We are a family of do-ers, preferring daily service to the more abstract concepts of love and care.

This pragmatist’s orientation toward doing love made loving Flicker incredibly difficult in those first few weeks after receiving his terminal diagnosis. If he was sick or injured outside the womb, we would have taken him to the best doctors and nursed him back to health. If he was hungry, we would have fed him whatever it would take to satisfy and nourish. If he was scared, we would have wrapped him up in safety and reassurance. But with him in the womb sick and injured, we simply could not do a thing. No doctor could fix him. No nutrition could fortify him. No physical touch could comfort and re-assure him. I was so powerless, a feeling that absolutely slayed me. Love became abstract, which was something all-together unfamiliar.

Eventually, though, I came to important realization: I was simply a mom living out unconditional love without reciprocity. What all moms do.

But to say that I had no tangible way to experience love with Flicker would not be truthful. Shortly after our diagnosis, a dear friend brought us a truly wonderful gift — a fetal heart monitor — which allowed us to listen to Flicker’s heart flicker, pulse, thump and gallop any time on demand. Flicker’s flicker became my lifeline to him, urging me to get out of bed each day and live life with him. It would be a life robbed of so many experiences, but a life nonetheless. I talked to him throughout my workday. We went on walks almost every night. My belly grew and it was impossible to conceal his little life from the public. I began writing to him as a way to process and reflect.

I will not deceive in claiming that this time was all rainbows. It was very, very hard at times. A sentiment about parenthood to which I think all moms, invisible or otherwise, can relate.

Before I met Flicker, my idea of balance was more aligned with the notion of steadiness. That is, not allowing myself to get too low or too high so that I can maintain a somewhat consistent state of general well-being. This trait had been one of much ribbing and confusion amongst my family, most of whom have never been quick to attach themselves to the concept of moderation. My mother does everything unapologetically BIG — talks, laughs, cooks, loves, projects, exaggerates, misbehaves — it’s what she’s known for and what draws people immediately to her. Let’s just say the apple does not fall far from the tree when analyzing the rest of the family. Consequently, my bent toward practicality and boundaries has always been a source of mystery.

But in this new normal of carrying a terminal pregnancy, steadiness was simply not possible. I also do not think it would have been healthy to repress the urges to feel the extremes. Our day-to-day was about living in the present; taking in whatever good, bad or otherwise greeted us in the moment. We learned to toe a narrow line that represented the collective average of this unpredictable oscillation between darkness and light. Dark: A horrible appointment with the NICU doctors where we were reminded of realities of his diagnosis in cold, heartless medical parlance. Light: A light-hearted beach day on Cape Cod with good friends followed by a scoop of the best homemade ginger ice cream I’ve ever had. Dark: Waking up on Mother’s Day knowing that I am going to be a mom to a boy in Heaven. Light: Spending Mother’s Day afternoon on Spectacle Island as a family, picnicking, reading and resting on a shaded hill overlooking the Boston harbor. Dark. Light. Dark. Light. And on and on we went. Over time, I gained an understanding of what this place of equilibrium felt like — seeking out joy without any tinges of guilt amidst this backdrop of sadness.

Every morning for the next three-plus months before I would get out of bed, we turned on the heart monitor and listened to Flicker. His heartbeat became our language; we could hear his, he could here mine. Beautiful. But on July 23rd, there was no heartbeat. I was 27 weeks pregnant, and I was furious. God, you were supposed to give me more time. He was supposed to be born alive. We have been so faithful. We have cared for this life and nurtured it the best we could. We have bonded with him and feel so cheated. Where is the love here?

But in a point of reflection more than nine months later, I can say that Flicker’s death was surrounded by so much love. His delivery was simply miraculous — there were some very scary potential scenarios, a near guarantee of a complicated c-section and just so many unknowns. But he came so very peacefully, no surgery, no complications. When they brought him to me to hold, it was clear that his earthly body had simply failed him. Had he been born alive, I just know he would have been in extreme pain, which would have been traumatic for both him and me. Instead, he passed away in peace, knowing only the protection of the womb. He would never have to confront bullies or naysayers or doubters. He would only know love. Of course, I have no way of knowing if Flicker felt the love that enveloped him during his brief life, but it gives me peace to imagine that he does. So that is what I am choosing to believe.

Motherhood is wrought with questions: Will he happy? Will he succeed? Will he have my husband’s thick hair? Will he play tennis like me? Will he love us? Will he love others? Will he contribute to the good of the world? Will he…..

I experienced the uncertainty of motherhood too, but my narrative is just a little different. I will never get answers to these questions, and will never experience the great gift of watching Flicker navigate through life here. But one unequivocal given in motherhood is that moms love their children, unconditionally. By that definition, I am a mom. Just an invisible one.

Today I wish all moms, invisible or otherwise, a very happy Mother’s Day.

On Mother’s Day, Remembering Mothers Without Living Children

Mother’s Day evokes bittersweet emotions in bereaved mothers everywhere. The pain of loss may be especially poignant for mothers without living children. Memories of loss transposed onto a world awash in flowers and greeting cards leaves women reeling. Too often, their experience of motherhood is largely unacknowledged by society. Taking place in May, a month that pulses with such tremulous beauty in long-awaited spring, Mother’s Day can threaten to break the best of us.

Says Toni Brabec, whose only baby daughter Olivia died in 2013:

Before, I saw Mother’s Day like most people do. A special day to honor our mothers… [I]’d pick out cards, a small gift… Now on Mother’s Day, I would rather stay in or just have a small gathering… [F]or me, who has no evidence of children other than the photos in my house, I am overlooked and/or it is assumed I am not a mother at all… it is difficult because in my heart, I know I am a mother. But the world doesn’t always see it like that.

This is what loving family and friends can consider doing to help support mothers without living children coping with loss.

1. Do acknowledge and affirm her standing as mother.
You can absolutely include bereaved mothers in Mother’s Day events. This may feel initially awkward, but it truly is both appropriate and helpful. The tone of inclusion may feel a bit more subdued, but the mother without living children should have her heroic struggle to mourn, remember, and find meaning marked. She will decline if she is not comfortable, but she will appreciate the invitation.

2. Do send a card.
It is comforting to receive an acknowledgement in the mail regarding loss. These cards are evidence of the existence of babies gone too soon, and these apparently slight things carry precious love to shore up mothers mourning and remembering.

3. Don’t try to talk her out of grief.
Resist the impulse to try to make her feel better. Instead, let her miss her child. Most expressions of grief that tow with them an undercurrent of the “at least,” will only inadvertently push the bereaved away.

4. Do ask her questions about her loss/her birth/her stillbirth.
Depending upon your relationship to the bereaved, dialogue can be helpful. It promotes the integration of grief and complex healing. Loss, when processed, can reveal phenomenally painful truths about being alive. However, the other side of the pain is the recognition of the beauty that is also inherent in living. Bereaved mothers don’t take much for granted. They can teach a great deal in this regard.

5. Do take care to acknowledge the loss of their baby.
If you see a Facebook post pertaining to loss, the mother is reaching out. Go ahead and comment — add your voice to the supportive community. You may not know what to say, but “I am thinking of you,” is a powerful statement.

Part of the isolation born of perinatal loss is the lack of shared memories. It is for this reason that efforts to invite the sharing of memories have great import. The bereaved mother is working to find her place in a whole new world. It is a lonely journey and she does appreciate the company.

Young Women Pose In Their Mothers’ Wedding Dresses, Exploring The Mythic Power Of A Gown

There’s something strangely magical about wedding gowns, the white dresses infused with fantastical (if not slightly old fashioned or misguided) ideas about femininity, purity and love. Quite often, young women look up to their mothers as models of this romantic reverie, their dresses serving as matriarchal symbols, ghostly remnants of a crucial event they are intimately linked to though did not experience physically.

In her photography series “The Line,” French photographer Céline Bodin engages with the beautiful and somewhat strange mystique of the notable white dress, exploring the complex roles a clothing garment plays in the lives of both mother and daughter.

“The images engage with our notion of purity, challenging our perception and the equation it immediately operates,” Bodin explained to The Huffington Post. “The apparent cleanness acts as camouflage and unsettles the apprehension of our customs’ determinatives. Echoing icons, the portraits quietly recall religious purity and aim to question what exactly defines such incarnation and where does its essence lie: is it within the dress, the person, the vision, or the idea?”

For the series, Bodin enlisted young women she already knew as her subjects, whether family friends or previous models. Their first task was convincing their mothers to let them wear the dresses for the shoot, an endeavor which in itself proved challenging for some. Just the difficulty involved in persuading the former brides to wear the sentimental attire speaks to its unusual, and almost mythic power.

“The resulting portrait might be one of both mother and daughter,” Bodin continued. “With melancholy it highlights an absence that can only find reality in each girl’s imagination, fed by the detail of the lace, the small holes and stains left on the dress, the old wedding photographs they might have seen. Confronting time and generations, the models silently re-enact a past they can only fantasize, allowing themselves to embody the archetypal role.”

Bodin’s photos subtly address many assumptions latently associated with wedding dresses, like the outmoded understandings of purity that, though far less relevant in the younger generation than in their mothers’, still lives on in the lore of the wedding dress.

The images, captured intensely against a white backdrop, appear at first almost like advertisements, with the subjects staring boldly straight ahead. Yet upon closer investigation, small imperfections, both in the dress and the images themselves, begin to appear. The photographs expose the tears and holes in the dominant narrative of the perfect wedding, while still lingering on the beauty of the fantasy itself.
