Sarah Paulson Features in Prada’s Short Movie

NEON DREAM: Hollywood actress Sarah Paulson features in a cameo role in Prada’s latest short movie flanking the brand’s women’s wear fall advertising campaign.
Directed by Willy Vanderperre, Paulson appears with model Amanda Murphy, who is the sole protagonist of the campaign images released earlier this month.
Similarly to the color images, in which Murphy is portrayed sporting the collection’s key, neon pieces immersed in neon signs representing Las Vegas’ nightlife, the short movie follows both women moving through the city’s glowing nocturnal landscape and its famous Sunset Strip.
Although filmed on location, the city appears as a reimagined reality, full of archetypes as red velvet drapes, glittering lights, glowing billboards and convertibles.
Reflecting the main theme that inspired the collection, Murphy stands out in this environment with her strong attitude, embodying a mysterious heroine in the dark night, in control and unafraid. On the other hand, Paulson plays multiple incarnations of one character, including that of Marilyn Monroe, a valet boy and a bartender.

Dunkirk Vet, 97, Breaks Down in Tears After Watching Movie: ‘I Never Thought I Would See That Again’

A 97-year-old vet who survived the battle of Dunkirk spoke through tears after watching the premiere of the new Christopher Nolan movie.

Ken Sturdy, a native of Wales who currently lives in Calgary, Canada, donned a suit jacket adorned with medals when he headed to Calgary’s Westhills Cinemas on Friday to watch the World War II drama that he lived through nearly 80 years ago.

“I never thought I would see that again,” Sturdy told Canada’s Global News. “It was just like I was there again.”

The film tells the story of the historic battle that took place between Nazi Germany and the Allied forces. The nine-day battle saw the evacuation of British and Allied forces from the beaches of the namesake French town as the Nazis continued their advance on the opposing forces. In the end, 338,226 men escaped, but thousands also perished.

RELATED VIDEO: Why Did Prince Harry Attend the ‘Dunkirk’ Premiere?

Sturdy was just 20 when he worked with the Royal Navy to help stranded soldiers surrounded by the advancing German army.

“I was in those little boats picking them out of the water,” he told Global News. “I had the privilege of seeing that film tonight but I’m saddened by it because of what happened on that beach.”

Thousands of soldiers died or were captured during the battle, and Sturdy said the film took him back to those harrowing days.

“Watching the movie, I could see my old friends again and a lot of them died in the war,” Sturdy said. “I went on convoys after that in the North Atlantic. I had lost so many of my buddies.”

“Don’t just go to the movie for entertainment,” he continued, his eyes filling with tears. “Think about it. And when you become adults, keep thinking.

“Tonight I cried because it’s never the end,” he said. “It won’t happen. We the human species are so intelligent and we do such astonishing things. We can fly to the moon but we still do stupid things.”

“I see a parallel, emotionally, between Caesar and Batman in that they’re both characters who are tortured and trying to sort of grapple within themselves to find a way to do the right thing in a very imperfect, and to some degree corrupt, world,” said Reeves. “And so it’s really that emotionality that I’m interested in.”

Star Wars: Lando Calrissian ‘Complicated’ in Han Solo Movie

Lando Calrissian is a complicated figure in the upcoming Han Solo spinoff movie, according to Donald Glover.

While speaking to Deadline about what’s been like portraying Lando, Glover said this younger version of the character is very complex. Even though Lando “has a lot of style” in the spinoff, you never know what his true agenda is.

“I think even Han isn’t as complicated as Lando is,” said Glover. “From the first time you meet him, you don’t know whether to trust him or not, and you’re constantly not knowing whether to trust him.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Glover said he’s learned quite a lot about Lando while playing him and that, since Lando is a lot of fans’ favorite character, Glover has been both excited and nervous taking over the role from Billy Dee Williams. Earlier this year, Williams shared his thoughts on meeting Glover, saying he “really got the sense of him

Bill O’Reilly’s ‘Killing Patton’ Movie Gets Killed By Fox’s NatGeo

Bill O’Reilly’s film “Killing Patton” has officially been killed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, O’Reilly’s latest movie adaptation of his best-selling “Killing” book series has been scrapped by the National Geographic Channel ― but apparently not for the reasons you’re thinking.

Despite multiple sexual harassment claims against him, and Fox News, which is also owned by 21st Century Fox, severing ties with O’Reilly, NatGeo told THR the movie was just “a difficult project to crack creatively.”

The statement continued, “Like most projects in development, it didn’t go the distance, so we passed on it.”

The movie, which is about World War II General George S. Patton, was announced in 2015 and scheduled to premiere in 2019. Four of O’Reilly’s other “Killing” films ― “Killing Jesus,” “Killing Kennedy,” “Killing Reagan” and “Killing Lincoln” ― have reportedly done well for NatGeo since 2013. THR called them “ratings drivers.”

Still, the network reportedly did not mention the allegations against O’Reilly in its statement. So, yeah, “Killing Patton” was just tough to “crack creatively.” Sure. Totally.

We’re Still Waiting For Jennifer Garner The Movie Star

The role of wife and mother is something Jennifer Garner knows well. It’s one she’s played in her last seven consecutive films, an identity that’s boosted her cultural relevance over the past decade, as her on-screen career has taken a back seat to raising a family … and, err, Ben Affleck

Films like “Juno” and “Miracles of Heaven” showed Garner making the most out of the “wife” character, delivering her best film performances to date, exploring the joys and challenges of motherhood. Similar roles in more forgettable fare (”The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” ”Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” and “Danny Collins”) have fallen by the wayside. And the less said about “Nine Lives” the better.

Those clamoring for a Garner comeback of a different sort won’t find much to celebrate in “Wakefield,” which opens for a wider release on Friday. Based off the short story by E. L. Doctorow, the film finds Garner playing wife and mother yet again, but the typecasting could be easily forgiven if the material was deserving. Director Robin Swicord, who’s made a career out of bringing women’s stories to the big screen, is at the helm of her first film in years. And yet here these identifiers overwhelm fleeting moments of agency, as Garner’s primary function is to service the evolution of a husband who’s, well, kind of an asshole.

“Wakefield” belongs to Bryan Cranston as Howard, a man who essentially ghosts his wife Diana (Garner) and children by going on a faux “Into the Wild” quest to find himself. Except instead of traveling all the way to the Alaskan hinterlands, Howard sets up shop in the attic overlooking his house, as he watches his family cope with his disappearance and presumed death. Apart from a handful of flashbacks where Garner gels well with a more adult, edgier tone, her scenes are mostly silent, taking place behind the attic’s glass window pane and through a pair of binoculars.

There’s a certain boldness in telling this story from the eyes of an unlikable protagonist, especially through the lens of a female director, and no one is better suited than Cranston to humanize an anti-hero. The film stays with Cranston’s character, even in his most arrogant and repulsive moments, as “Wakefield” is a deeply internal piece that strongly evokes its original source material. Exploring everyone’s perverse desire to pull the escape hatch on life is fascinating, but not allowing Garner a moment of respite under Cranston’s unrelenting gaze makes for a frustrating and far less dynamic experience.

In a recent interview with Build Series, Swicord addressed these criticisms, agreeing that the story is the very “definition of the male gaze,” but claiming that the film ultimately subverts this power structure. There is something to be said about Swicord writing and directing a film that unapologetically empathizes with a middle-aged white male in crisis and not his wife. However, if her intention was to provide commentary on the ways men come to view women, she missed a crucial opportunity in the film’s ending to drive her point home.

While Howard lives in self-imposed destitution, dumpster diving for food and communing with the town’s local raccoon population, Diana is left to her own devices. She later strikes up a romance with Dirk (Jason O’Mara), an ex-boyfriend and former work rival of Howard’s. Through flashbacks, it’s revealed that Howard was only initially interested in Diana because of what amounts to a pissing contest between himself and Dirk. It’s disappointing to say the least that Garner’s character so easily volleys back and forth between the two and is none the wiser.

Dirk’s encroachment on Howard’s so-called territory and an almost laughable come-to-Jesus moment during a rainstorm prompt him to return home months after disappearing. Before he walks through the door, however, Howard imagines the various reactions Diana and his family might have. In one scenario, they’re terrified, and in another, they break down crying. But before the audience is allowed to see her genuine reaction ― and a scene where she exists outside of her husband’s viewpoint ― the film cuts to black. The short story ends in a similar fashion, so the adaptation is nothing if not faithful, but the ending feels like a cop-out that unfairly robs the character of any semblance of justice.

Curiously, “Wakefield” was filmed during the nearly one-year period after Garner and then husband Ben Affleck announced their separation. The actor was painted by the media as a philanderer in the midst of a mid-life crisis (see: fake phoenix back tattoo), while Garner held down the fort, shuttling kids back and forth from karate class. That’s why it’s somewhat baffling that given the material’s fascination with a husband’s failings, Garner chose to work on this project before eventually divorcing Affleck this April.

As she raises her three children, the actress is increasingly selective with her film work, especially leading parts that require her to be away from her family for long stretches of time. Maybe Garner has fallen victim to Hollywood’s pernicious stereotyping of women over 40, or maybe she’s had trouble finding roles that work within her constraints. She could be seeking out these roles, as she can relate in one way or another. Or perhaps, she just needs a new agent

The idea of Garner strictly as a wife and mother in her personal life and in her on-screen roles might be the dominant narrative of her celebrity, but she has already proven that she’s more than her megawatt smile, dimples and Capital One commercials. Five seasons on ABC’s “Alias” shot her toward superstardom, and cemented her status as an actress who could kick ass and emote with the best of them. At least, the Golden Globe Awards thought so. And playing a deranged woman who develops an attraction to a priest in the little known short film “Serena” confirmed that Garner could, yes, go dark.

Despite making the most out of the little she’s given in “Wakefield,” you can’t help but walk out of the theater asking: What if?

What if Garner made as many films as Affleck in the last decade? What if “Wakefield” took the time to explore what it’s like to be the one left behind? What if Garner finally found a role that allows her to be the movie star we always thought she could be?

You can be highbrow. You can be lowbrow. But can you ever just be brow? Welcome to Middlebrow, a weekly examination of pop culture. Read more here.

The Rock Offers Rampage Movie Plot Description

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has revealed the plot for his Rampage movie, revealing some alterations to the original game’s setup.

In an Instagram post, the Fate of the Furious star revealed he’s in Atlanta to begin production on the film, which is based on the video game of the same name.

Johnson also let slip that the film would focus on his character hunting down the people causing animals transforming into giant versions of themselves, whereas the game largely focused on three playable massive animals who had once been humans.

“I head up an anti poaching unit out of Rwanda,” Johnson wrote of his character. “My best friend is a rare albino gorilla named, George. Very bad people infect George, an alligator and a wolf with a serum. All three animals grow at an unprecedented rate. Their size, speed, agility and violent aggression is off the charts. They go on a deadly rampage and want to destroy the world. George not happy. Me not happy. When animals like you, they lick you. When they don’t like you, they kill you. ‘Fate Of The Furious’ Becomes The Second ‘Fast And The Furious’ Movie To Earn $1 Billion

The “Fast and the Furious” pedal earned another medal this weekend, with “The Fate of the Furious” grossing $ 1 billion.

As of Sunday, the eighth “Furious” installment has earned $ 192.7 million domestically and a whopping $ 867.6 million overseas, according to Universal Pictures’ estimates. It’s the 30th movie in history ― and the second in the franchise, after 2015’s “Furious 7” ― to join the billionaires’ club.

“The Fate of the Furious” pulled this off after just 17 days in theaters, the same amount it took “Furious 7.” The year’s first billion-dollar release, “Beauty and the Beast,” required almost a month to hit that mark. “Fate” is also the highest-grossing film directed by an African-American.

This news comes as no surprise, given the increasing international fervor surrounding these high-octane movies. Since “Fast & Furious,” the fourth movie in the series, was released in 2009, each installment has outpaced its predecessor domestically and globally. Universal, which is enjoying a bang-up year at the box office thanks to “Fate,” “Get Out” and “Split,” already has two more “Fast and the Furious” sequels planned, and studio executives have reportedly discussed a potential spin-off surrounding Dwayne Johnson’s and Jason Statham’s characters. Plus, as we pointed out a couple of weeks ago, “The Fate of the Furious” introduces a certain baby who could extend the story’s shelf life far beyond its current expiration date

Other franchises with multiple $ 1 billion earners include “Star Wars,” “The Avengers,” “Transformers” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

In other weekend box-office news, “How To Be a Latin Lover” opened to a decent $ 12 million, while the big-screen adaptation of Dave Eggers’ popular cyber-panic novel “The Circle” collected $ 9.1 million, a drowsy figure for a title released on more than 3,000 screens. The weekend’s big surprise was the Indian fantasy “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion,” which took in an estimated $ 10 million despite a mere 425-theater opening.

The rest of the Top 10 includes “The Boss Baby,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Going in Style,” “Gifted,” “Smurfs: The Lost Village” and “Born in China.”

Here’s An Old Hollywood Movie You Should Watch If You Loved ‘Get Out’

By now, you’re probably aware that Jordan Peele considers his movie “Get Out” to be a “social thriller” ― a genre he coined himself.

The film has been both a box-office and critical success, earning over $ 150 million in ticket sales and settling at a 99 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (with only one negative review).

During a long media cycle for the movie, Jordan Peele appeared on numerous podcasts, including “Fresh Air” and “Nerdist,” and showed up in print publications, such as GQ and The New York Times. The Huffington Post suggested that “Get Out” is the type of movie the Oscars should pay attention to, and praised the ending as “a reason to go to the movies.”

If you’re reading this, you are probably, like us, already craving another great “social thriller” to watch ASAP.

Although it may be a while before a new movie comes out, it’s already possible to discover an older film that may be brand new to you. During numerous interviews, Peele referenced “The Stepford Wives” as a good choice.

But in any case, it was a welcome surprise when streaming movie service Warner Archive reached out about a new curation by old Hollywood podcast host extraordinaire Karina Longworth, the creator of the popular “You Must Remember This.”

The curated list, which mostly focuses on movies from the mid-1900s, including “West Point” (1928), “Bombshell” (1933), “The Star” (1952) and “The Prince and the Showgirl” (1957), features a flick that might just interest “Get Out” fans.

Here’s Longworth talking to the Warner Archive about the 1942 movie “Cat People.”

I think the most essential film on the list is “Cat People.” It’s definitely something I would recommend for people who think they don’t like horror movies. It’s a masterclass in filmmaking with budgetary limitations, and its political allegory (critiquing the idea of American security as being synonymous with homogeneity, and the fear of the other) couldn’t be more timely.

HuffPost sent a few follow-up questions Longworth’s way to get a further explanation of “Cat People” and its role in culture. Her responses are below.

You said “Cat People” is the most essential film on this list in your mind, due to its ability to create a successful political allegory on a low budget. Could you talk a bit more in length about the message the movie was trying to present and your understanding of how it was received?

Longworth: There’s a part in the “YMRT” episode I did on “Cat People’s” producer Val Lewton, in which Lewton is in a meeting at RKO and an executive says to him, “Remember, we don’t want any ‘messages’ in our movies.” Lewton responded, “Sorry, but my movies do have messages. The message is, death is good.”

That deliberate antagonism of his bosses aside, all of Lewton’s films intentionally used the horror/thriller genre as an excuse to make movies about social and psychological life in the post-war world. In “Cat People,” Lewton depicts a cheerful, peace time America that equates a secure society with a homogenous one.

The “monster” is the foreign other who has infiltrated the American family by marrying a boring American man, and in a foreshadowing of the 1950s’ totally mixed-up ideas about women and sex, this exotic creature has to remain chaste in order to keep the monster locked up inside her.

If I had to explain what Lewton meant by the idea that his “message” is that “death is good,” I’d point to the fact that the harbinger of death in “Cat People” is also the film’s most sympathetic character, and is absolutely a victim of social circumstance. “Cat People” was a massive hit, probably because all of these ideas were subliminal rather than overt.

Do you see parallels between “Cat People” and Jordan Peele’s recent stated goal to make social commentary horror (such as “Get Out”)? Do you think “Cat People” can be considered a urtext for that genre (if not necessarily for Peele specifically)?

I think the genre of horror (or, supernatural fiction) has been frequently used as a vehicle for social commentary and criticism. I wouldn’t call “Cat People” the single urtext, because it’s not part of the first or second wave of socially conscious supernatural films.

Certainly it is a classic, but it was actually probably more innovative in its visual style than in its social content. In terms of looking for other foundational films, prior to “Cat People,” a lot of the monster movies of the 1930s, including “King Kong” and “Frankenstein,” and two of my favorites, “Mad Love” and “The Walking Dead,” use the stories of monsters, and the idea of a porous line between life and death, to critique society.

If there is one single urtext, maybe it’s Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”

Move Over Batman, A ‘Batgirl’ Movie May Be Coming From Joss Whedon

Batgirl, one of the world’s most popular superheroines, is set to get her very own film, according to Variety.

The outlet noted Thursday that director Joss Whedon is “nearing a deal” with Warner Bros. to write, direct and produce the project, which is currently untitled.

The film will mark DC Film’s latest movie with a strong female lead. This summer, the studio will release “Wonder Woman,” starring Gal Gadot in the title role, and they previously released “Suicide Squad,” which saw Margot Robbie steal the show as Harley Quinn

Batgirl has been seen in various iterations over the years. As Variety notes, she first appeared in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, police commissioner James Gordon’s daughter, in “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!”

Yvonne Craig portrayed the character in the “Batman” series starring Adam West, which aired from 1966 to 1968. She also played Batgirl in a 1967 TV short. And who could forget 1997’s “Batman & Robin” (directed by Joel Schumacher), which starred Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl alongside George Clooney’s Batman.

No word yet on casting, but with Whedon at the helm, Batgirl is in good hands. Whedon previously directed “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” for DC rival Marvel, and he’s responsible for blessing us with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel” and “Firefly.”

Like we said, Batgirl is in good hands.

Keira Knightley Once Told Love Actually Director Her Next Movie Was ‘Some Pirate Thing — Probably a Disaster’

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has raked in billions of box-office booty, but according to her Love Actually director, Keira Knightley wasn’t always sold on the idea.

In an op-ed posted to Radio Times, Richard Curtis, the romantic comedy’s writer-director, reflected on where his stars were in their careers when the film debuted in 2003. “When we shot the film, I remember Keira Knightley saying that her next project was ‘some pirate thing — probably a disaster,’ ” he revealed.

Of course, that project turned out to be the wildly popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise that made her an international superstar. And Knightley wasn’t the only Love Actually alum to score a role in the blockbuster. As Curtis pointed out, “Bill Nighy was also later a be-tentacled Davy Jones” in 2006’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

The writer-director also mentioned that Andrew Lincoln, who famously professed his love to Knightley with cue cards in Love Actually, “had never come across, let alone killed, the Walking Dead.” And Chiwetel Ejiofor, who went on to earn an Oscar nomination for 12 Years a Slave in 2014 “hadn’t been a slave for five minutes, let alone 12 years,” wrote Curtis.

From Coinage: See Where 6 Stars Were Before They Were Famous

The trip down memory lane comes in the wake of Friday’s U.K. debut of a short follow-up to Love Actually, which promises to catch up with its main characters over a decade later. The reunion features most of the original cast, and was created to benefit Red Nose Day, a popular U.K. children’s charity.

“I know the film is very much not everyone’s cup of tea, but I’ve been surprised ever since it came out, and so grateful, that some people are really fond of it,” Curtis wrote. “So I hope that a lot of you will turn on to BBC1 on Red Nose Day to see the mini-sequel and maybe find it in your hearts to give a bit of cash to save and change a lot of lives, at home and abroad. What a strange and delightful outcome that would be for our little, old, slightly chaotic ‘All I Want for Christmas’ Christmas film.”

‘Girlhood’ Star Plays A 19th-Century Black Equestrian In New Movie

French actress Karidja Touré may have first caught your attention in 2015 after the U.S. release of the coming-of-age drama “Girlhood.” Now, she’s back for another coming-of-age movie, but this time she’ll be depicting the life of equestrian Selika Lazevski.

“The Adventures of Selika” is a short film based on the 19th-century equestrian, whom the film’s writer Sybil H. Mair reimagines as an African princess forced to leave her home and find her place in the world.

The movie comes three years after the Cannes Film Festival premiere of “Girlhood,” which earned Touré a nomination for a Cesar Award ― comparable to an Academy Award ― for Most Promising Actress.

Touré’s new role is starkly different from her turn as a lost 16-year-old who befriends a rebellious group of girls to gain a sense of identity in “Girlhood.”

“The Adventures of Selika,” which also stars Jennifer Daley and Luke Elliot, is slated to premiere on April 16, but the platform on which the movie will appear has yet to be publicized, according Shadow and Act. You can check out images from the film on their website

Watch How The New ‘Power Rangers’ Movie Is Celebrating Diversity

On Friday, the latest “Power Rangers” movie will be released in the United States, marking a new, more diverse era in the popular franchise.

The original 1993 series caught some backlash for playing on racial stereotypes ― specifically by having an Asian woman play the “yellow” ranger and a black man play the “black” ranger (who fought in a “hip-hop” style).

But it seems as though the new reboot, directed by Dean Israelite, is seeking to expand the world of the rangers by including a cast that is not only racially diverse but also intersect at other less-represented identities.

The reboot features a strong Asian male lead as the black ranger, a refreshing casting in light of Hollywood’s ongoing issue with positioning Asian men as heroes in mainstream films. In addition to that, the new Power Rangers also include a queer character played by Mexican-American actress Becky G and an autistic character, played by black actor RJ Cyler.

“There was no specific look to what the characters had to look like,” Becky G explained in a recent interview with MTV. “We could be anybody.”

It looks like at least one Hollywood movie has gotten the memo ― diversity isn’t just about filling quotas, but creating characters with truly unique experiences and backgrounds.

From a show with one-dimensional and often stereotypical POC characters the franchise has morphed into a reboot with characters of diverse ethnicities, abilities, and sexual orientations ― proving that together, we really can do anything.

Watch the video above to see how “Power Rangers” has begun to evolve.

See The Full-Throttle Trailer For ‘Baby Driver,’ The Ansel Elgort Movie That Rocked SXSW

Ansel Elgort drives getaway cars and Jon Hamm plays a psychopathic bank robber in “Baby Driver,” already one of 2017’s big-screen highlights. Crowds and critics went wild for the movie Saturday at its South by Southwest premiere, and new trailer makes it easy to see why.

“Baby Driver” marks Edgar Wright’s first directorial feature in four years. Known for clever action comedies, Wright previously made “Shaun of the Dead,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “The World’s End.” He also co-wrote “Ant-Man.”

Because Elgort’s monikered title character relies on pumped-up music to pull off successful getaways, the movie’s soundtrack makes it a sort of jukebox musical. It’s a romance too, with the titular Baby falling for a waitress (Lily James) and attempting to give up his crime life. Overnight reviews have called the film “a blast,” “wildly successful” and “a ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ for the ‘La La Land’ crowd.”

“Baby Driver,” which also stars Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Eiza González, opens Aug. 11.

Check out the international trailer below, which is even more thrilling:

‘Get Out’ Is The Type Of Movie The Oscars Should Pay Attention To

The same night “Moonlight” won Best Picture, “Get Out” ended its fruitful theatrical debut with $ 33.4 million in North American grosses, surpassing forecasts that estimated a $ 28 million opening. Jordan Peele’s horror film is expected to net another $ 26 million this go-round, remarkable for a genre known for steep second-weekend revenue declines.

One week alone cannot presage a seismic shift, but the coupled victories for “Moonlight” and “Get Out” send a clear message about the types of stories worth telling on the big screen. “Moonlight” is a delicate coming-of-age masterpiece with an exclusively black cast, and “Get Out” is a scalding satire that indicts America’s racial bigotry as thoroughly as any slavery movie.

The two share another commonality: rapturous reception. “Moonlight” drew near-universal acclaim and placed high on many critics’ year-end lists. It was, in many ways, the defining art film of 2016, doing first-rate business for a project that cost a mere $ 1.5 million to make. Similarly, “Get Out” promos boasted of the movie’s 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, at least until critic Armond White published his characteristically contrarian review in the National Review.

Because “Moonlight” is an austere drama, it found an obvious portal into the Oscar race, eventually securing eight nominations. “Get Out,” on the other hand, hails from a genre regularly ignored by awards groups. Movies released in the first half of the year aren’t often remembered by the time Oscar campaigns rev up around September anyway. But those constructs should change because “Get Out” is every bit as worthy an Oscar candidate as much of the prestige fare that floods theaters every winter.

Making his directorial debut, Peele positions “Get Out” within a through-line of classics chronicling social terrors. He has cited “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Stepford Wives” ― nightmares about female subjugation and spousal manipulation ― as key influences. Except instead of demonic neighbors or patriarchal fascism, the fear in “Get Out” is something far more common: white people.

Peele has crafted a postmodern indictment of racial bondage that requires astute viewership. Some will call this a “horror comedy,” but that’s a simplistic label: The humor is often a tongue-in-cheek result of the terror, which derives from white faces preying on black bodies. It is history, modernized and largely depoliticized, aside from the central milky clan insisting they would have voted for Barack Obama for a third term.

As Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a black photographer, meets his white girlfriend Rose’s (Allison Williams) family for the first time at their suburban WASP manor, his anxieties are reflected in common horror tropes. Chris oozes paranoia, leaving us at first wondering, as we did with Rosemary, whether his misgivings are unfounded.

We are all acquainted with, or can at least imagine, the stresses of meeting a partner’s relatives. (In-laws are terrifying, after all.) Abetted by the tension of a psychological thriller, that familiarity invokes skeptical amusement. We chuckle nervously as Rose’s family dotes over Chris like a trophy while their black house-servants mill about like zombies. We titter as his fears are seemingly confirmed and dismissed at once. Jump-scares ― those cheap “Boo!” tricks that have come to define the horror genre ― end in us laughing at ourselves for giving in to the scene the way it wants us to. We don’t yet know Rose and her parents (Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener) have brewed a sinister plot that lobotomizes and enslaves black people, but we can detect an intangible racism beneath the surface, and that careful escalation leaves the viewer feeling susceptible. (It must be said, however, that the film does pepper in earnest comedy, mostly thanks to Chris’ loyal best friend, played by a boisterous Lil Rel Howery.)

“Get Out” is a piece of craftsmanship, seemingly made by a veteran director. It takes a skilled filmmaker with a deep connection to the nature of storytelling to create something that twists our familiarity with movies into something original. That it follows recognizable patterns is precisely the point. In Peele’s heightened narrative, well-meaning white people ― those clueless social liberals who would gladly dedicate their avocado toast to Black Lives Matter ― are villains without masks. These boogeymen and -women are all around us. You might even be one of them. And that idea, however brashly outlined, fosters a sociological commentary as complex as any prestigious Oscar title.

Whether “Get Out” will remain one of the year’s best, thereby sealing its Oscar worthiness, is yet to be seen. The last Best Picture champ released in January or February was 1991’s “The Silence of the Lambs,” the only horror movie that’s ever won. But Universal would be wise to start pondering an awards campaign, particularly for Kaluuya’s effective performance and Peele’s direction and script. Even if the Academy hasn’t delivered on its promise, the Best Picture category expanded to a potential 10 slots so the Oscars could recognize popular movies regularly edged out by more somber conventions. “Get Out” is every bit as nuanced and layered as many intimate indie dramas, and at a time when our country can seem more racially polarized than ever, it’s just the sort of topical confrontation that Americans should be encouraged to embrace.

“Get Out” is now in theaters.

Nightwing Movie in the Works From LEGO Batman Director

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. wants to expand the DC Extended Universe with the Batman-centric character, who’s also known as Dick Grayson or the first Robin. Nightwing hasn’t been seen so far in any of the films, though one Robin was apparently killed by the Joker as part of the backstory in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The Accountant scribe Bill Dubuque is reportedly working on the Nightwing screenplay.

Warner Bros. is releasing Wonder Woman and Justice League, with Aquaman and The Flash films planned for the future. In fact, we have compiled every upcoming DC Extended Universe movie.

‘The Lego Batman Movie’ Beats ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ At The Box Office

Costumed avengers, a billionaire with a kinky side, and a brutally efficient hit man proved to be just the tonic for an ailing domestic box office.

”The Lego Batman Movie” bested “Fifty Shades Darker” at the multiplexes over the weekend, earning a robust $ 55.6 million to capture first place. “Fifty Shades Darker,” the sequel to 2015’s “Fifty Shades of Grey,” couldn’t quite match its predecessor’s $ 85.2 million launch. It had to settle for a still sizable $ 46.8 million debut and second place on the box office chart.

Not to be outdone, Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 2,” a followup to 2015’s “John Wick,” picked up a smashing $ 30 million. That’s more than double what the first film racked up during its debut. The headlines will inevitably be about “Fifty Shades Darker” and “The Lego Batman Movie,” but the “John Wick” follow-up’s numbers are more impressive. It grew its audience substantially, adding more female viewers to the mix. Like “Pitch Perfect” and “Austin Powers,” both of which saw a major increase in ticket sales between their first and second installment, “John Wick” has now made a case for itself as a certifiable franchise.

“The interest in it will spread out more,” predicted Carpou. “With next weekend being a holiday, it gives us a chance to have repeat business.”

Universal’s “Split” surrendered the first place it had occupied for three consecutive weekends to the barrage of newcomers. The hit thriller took in $ 9.3 million to capture fourth place on the chart, while pushing its domestic haul to $ 112.3 million.

Fox’s “Hidden Figures” rounded out the top five, earning $ 8 million. The Oscar-nominated drama about African-American NASA employees fighting racial prejudice in the early days of the space program has made $ 131.4 million stateside.

In milestone news, Universal and Illumination’s “Sing” topped $ 500 million globally. The animated film about a talent competition has launched a new animated franchise for the studios.

On the indie front, Fox Searchlight’s “A United Kingdom” opened in four theaters, grossing $ 70,000 for a per-screen average of $ 17,500. The drama chronicles a love affair between the King Seretse Khama of Botswana (David Oyelowo) and Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white woman from London, and the controversy it sparked.

The Weinstein Company’s “Lion” continued to chug along in its twelfth weekend, seeing its numbers rise even as it lost 68 screens. The drama about a man who uses Google Earth to find his long lost family in India grossed $ 4.1 million to push its domestic returns above $ 30 million. David Glasser, the company’s COO, argued that the story, which touches on immigration, has struck a nerve in a political climate dominated by talk of travel bans from certain countries. India is not one of the country’s targeted by the Trump administration, but “Lion” star Sunny Pawar, a native of the country, did have trouble getting permission to enter the U.S. for the film’s premiere.

“This is a zeitgeist movie,” he said. “As people discover it, you wouldn’t believe the emails that are pouring in. Every day we wake up to notes from politicians, tennis players, even a woman I know from Middle America all saying this couldn’t be more timely.”

Overall ticket sales did slide, and were unable to match the year-ago period, a weekend that saw the $ 132.4 million debut of “Deadpool.” Still, analysts note that weekend was President’s Day, a holiday that’s been pushed back by a week in 2017, making comparisons difficult. Some box office sages predicted that this will be the start of a torrid run at the multiplexes, one that will ultimately eclipse the high-water mark established last year.

”This is the true kickoff of what could be the biggest year ever,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore. “This weekend is the star of our record run.”
