A. Sauvage to Launch Sportswear Collection After Moving Studio to L.A.

Adrien Sauvage, who established his men’s wear label A. Sauvage in London in 2010, has become the latest designer to decamp for Los Angeles, opening up a studio in Beverly Hills this summer.
“Basically I came here for Christmas holiday and I never went back,” said Sauvage, who said Robert Downey Jr. was among the first of his clients to encourage the move. Sauvage launched his line of contemporary suiting in Harrods, then opened his own shop on Bond Street, and today his made-to-measure pieces are also available online. He still travels back to London every eight weeks for his made-to-measure clients, but says the California lifestyle has inspired a new idea — a sportswear line due out in January.
“I surveyed the land of T-shirts. I thought two or three years ago the whole sportswear thing was going to go in the bin, but it’s still here. It’s even tweaked my own style a bit. My sportswear line is going to have a casual elegance, the whole seven days a week wardrobe. It’s perfect for getting on or off a plane,” he said. He is still exploring wholesale partners for the line.
Sauvage has several star NBA clients, such as Dwyane Wade,

Miley Cyrus Sings Moving Rendition Of ‘Inspired’ At Manchester Benefit Concert

Miley Cyrus performed a touching rendition of her new song “Inspired” at the One Love Manchester benefit concert Sunday, dedicating the song to everyone in the crowd and people around the world.

“I’d like to wrap my arms around each and every one of you and tell you thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” she told the crowd. “I am so honored to be at this incredible event surrounded by all you amazing people.”

She continued, “For me, the most important responsibility we have on this entire planet is to take care of one another, and look what we’re doing today and how amazing that is.”

Stars such as Robbie Williams, Niall Horan, Pharrell Williams, Take That, and, of course, Ariana Grande, whose concert was the target of the May attack, also performed at the benefit show. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Red Cross’ We Love Manchester emergency fund.

A terrorist detonated a suicide bomb at Manchester Arena last month, killing 22 others, including children, and injuring more than 100 people.

The show went on as about 160 miles to the south, Londoners reeled from a Saturday night terrorist attack that killed seven people and injured dozens more.

No, That Huge Celebrity Is Not Moving To Your Town

Perhaps you’ve seen the news on Facebook: Matt Damon is moving to Asheville, North Carolina. Ariana Grande is moving to Mobile, Alabama. Miley Cyrus is moving to Roswell, Georgia.

Alas, small-town dwellers, it is all a hoax.

Since February, a network of self-titled “fantasy” news sites has been posting articles claiming A-list celebrities are moving to far-flung cities and small towns across the U.S. and other parts of the world.

A quick Google search reveals that dozens of these such stories come from the network, which includes the websites DailyNews11, Headline Brief, LocalNews33, Lopez Report, Aly NewsKNP7 News, KLPO News, WCPM3 News, WMAC News, KUPR7 News, WLEB21 NewsNewsDaily27, The Clancy ReportO’Reilly Post and McKenzie Post. All but Headline Brief were created in early 2016, and Headline Brief was only registered in April 2015.

Each of these sites — which look nearly identical — declare all or most of their content to be “satire or pure fantasy.” But still, the articles have a tendency to spread across social media, sparking many real local news stories to debunk rumors of some major celebrity moving to the area.

To read a handful of these stories in succession is to realize you are being duped. Many of the celebrities claim to have tired of “the LA lifestyle” and want to cast the city glamour aside for a life among “real, genuine people” in the articles, which are published with similar, if not identical, wording that praises each town.

“The people there are good, decent people and they care about their community,” Vin Diesel, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kevin Costner and Justin Timberlake are quoted as saying.

In other versions, celebrities simply happened upon the town and fell in love with it — a tempting fiction. It’s not so unreasonable to think a public figure would also recognize your hometown’s charm, although some on social media share the articles to mock the celebrity’s choice.

Maybe, one day, Angelina Jolie or Justin Timberlake will tire of city life and relocate to Montana. But if that news is published on any of the sites mentioned above, it’s probably not true.

You Can Meditate While Moving — And It Totally Counts

I first tried to sit still and clear my mind in college, after a nasty breakup where I was consumed with heartache. For weeks, I moped around the city playing whack-a-mole against all the feelings of betrayal and hurt that were popping up in my head, but I had taken enough yoga classes at that point to know that the nasty things I wanted to say to my ex were a poison I was pouring down my own throat.

I wanted meditation to be the way out, to interrupt the subconscious train of destructive patterns and surround me with all its benefits — the decreased heart rate, the lower blood pressure and the general feelings of improved health and mental clarity.

But how?

“I’m really bad at meditating,” I complained to my friend Eric after a few fidgety attempts. “I hate sitting still. My back hurts, my shoulders ache, my feet always fall asleep.”

Eric happened be a Feldenkrais instructor–a type of holistic movement therapy that aims at bringing people more fully into their bodies. Think of it as yoga’s kin.

“Meditating while sitting still is unnatural,” he said without missing a beat. “Of course it’s hard. I never sit still when I meditate,” he added.

“Wait, what?” My eyes crossed. “You can meditate without uh, sitting still? That counts?”

Eric rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, especially for people who have mobility issues–joint pain, muscle weakness–moving meditation is much more accessible.”

Holy crap!

That feeling of sinking into a deep exhale when I hit my first down dog of the day–that was meditation. That full inhale I focused in on to help hold me up in Warrior II? That was meditating too. Turned out, I did know how to meditate!

splits

Some people, usually people who have trained long and hard, can meditate while sitting still. But for a lot of us, moving is the best gateway. Those movements help maintain focus on something beyond our day-to-day concerns and our mind naturally gravitates towards what it is doing. In yoga, breath cues are integral to the practice of stretching, flexing, and holding–it provides a focal point for whack-a-mole minds of all shapes and sizes to latch onto.

When you have a sequence of connected moments where you have stopped thinking about what you need to pick up at the store, the horrible things you want to say to an ex, and the ten pounds you want to lose, you have successfully meditated. When you can string these moments on demand, you develop a new tool in your arsenal to fight existential angst, anxiety, and stress.

Yoga teaches that there is prana coursing through our bodies–it’s also called the life force, or Qi in the Chinese tradition. Having a controlled breath means you can get a lasso around your prana. The breath is what bridges the gap–it is the gateway to the mind-body connection. If you can regulate your breath first, you have a toehold in working the muscles that regulate your mind.

Any ritual that derails that thought train barreling around your brain, whether it be planning for the future or reliving the past, can be meditation. Whether it’s folding laundry or standing on your head–all you need is the proper intent.

The golden pot at the end of this meditation rainbow is a sneaky feeling that floods the senses when unwanted thoughts come and you have the power to easily release them because you are happily focusing on your breath. A calm, focused presence arises when you don’t have to be or do something else.

Pausing and consciously relaxing–even for a minute–shifts us away from the defensive and aggressive sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for our fight or flight impulses. Most of us aren’t even aware of the low-level fight or flight anxiety that follows us around all day until we get a break from it.

Meditation is a pattern interrupt–and whatever skillful means you can use to bring your thought to your breath will derail the unconscious brain train rumbling around inside your head.

So get fixated on your breath–get all OCD about coming back to every tiny sensation of inhaling and exhaling–feeling the air as it enters your nostrils, feeling the skin stretch at your ribcage as your lungs expand, feeling the minuscule movement as you pause and then take in just a tiny bit more oxygen.

If sitting still doesn’t work for you, but you want to have a calmer mind, yoga is one of the best ways to start developing the muscles of attention so you can step off the thought train whenever you need a break.

On Father’s Day: War, Memories and Moving On

The essay below is adapted from my first book, “Perfume Dreams: Reflections on the Vietnamese Diaspora.” On Father’s Day, as a child of a veteran, I am posting this in commemoration of all those who fought and live still haunted with memories of wars.

Home for the weekend recently, I chanced upon my father’s South Vietnamese Army uniform, the three silver stars still pinned meticulously onto each lapel. Once in that tropical country, my father had worn it regally, a warrior in a civil war he bravely fought and lost. Once, as a child, I had looked up to a man who had seemed more like a deity. Hadn’t I imagined myself as an adult walking in his soldierly footsteps?

A particular night emerges from my childhood memories: the cool wind blows through a villa where distant B-52 bomb explosions echo, melding with the monsoon rain. I am 10 years old, an army brat living with my family in the imperial city of Hue, near the DMZ (demilitarized zone). Somewhere in the servant quarters our two German shepherds are barking loudly as a few army jeeps screech to a halt on the cobble stone courtyard.

2014-04-14-ScreenShot20140414at9.16.49AM.png

My father’s hat and cane, relics from the Vietnam war.

“Papa’s home! Papa’s Home”! I yell and rush to him — he laughs as he lifts me up for a warm embrace. His wet uniform emits the smell of sweat, cologne, mud, cigar and gunpowder — smells that I will always associate with the battlefield. But it does not matter — I am happy in that embrace, happy in that house by the Perfume River when history was still on our side.

A few years later, however, the war ended — badly for us. When we set foot on the American shore, history was already against us; Vietnam went on without us; America went on without acknowledging us. In America, there were no territories for father and son to defend, no war to fight. Instead, a gap slowly widened between us.

Though he managed to remake himself as a banking executive with an MBA — a remarkable feat for someone who came to America in his 40s and who spoke English as his third language — my father’s passion remains extraterritorial. At dinner time, after a drink or two, he would relive the battles that he had fought and won. The Vietnam war has become for him “a twenty-five years century” — the epitome of his life.

My father’s booming voice shook every pane of glass in our new home and filled me, slowly but surely, with an impending sense of doom. His war, my inheritance; his defeat, my legacy. By the time I was 12, I, too, had become a bitter veteran of a war — but one I had never actually fought.

What my father rarely mentioned was the last time he wore his uniform — the day South Vietnam surrendered. My father had commandeered a navy ship full of army officers to the Philippines. Nearing shore, he changed into a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, threw his gun into the Pacific Ocean, and asked the U.S. for asylum. I was not there but that image, more than any other, spelled the end of my childhood mythology.

When I turned 18, my father — a big fan of Napoleon — took the family to Europe for vacation. Paris, where he had once been a foreign student, was the main attraction but he insisted on seeing the battlefield of Waterloo in Belgium. We spent hours driving through the Belgian countryside until, at last, we found the place. Climbing to the top of the hill overlooking the field, my father began narrating where Napoleon’s army stood, and how the Duke of Wellington arrived just on time to turn the tide. I already knew the story and I was no longer intrigued. I suddenly realized that passions are not inherited — that what the pasture I was gazing at invoked in me was not a martial ethos but poetry.

2015-06-21-1434908284-369257-GenThiLam_1474x245.jpg

My father visiting West Point as a general during the Vietnam War.

Somewhere in between the boy who once sang the Vietnamese national anthem in the school yard in Saigon with tears in his eyes and the young man preparing to go to college believing in his own power to shape his destiny was the slow but natural demise of the old patriotic impulse. The boy was willing to die for his homeland. The man had become circumspect. The boy had believed that the borders, like the Great Wall of China, were real demarcations, their integrity not to be disputed. The man discovered that the borders have always been porous. The boy was once overwhelmed by the tragedy that had fallen on his people, had resented history for robbing him and his family of home and hearth and national identity. The man, though envious of the primacy of his childhood emotions, has become emboldened by his own process of individualization.

Indeed, the Cold War and its aftermath has given birth to a race of children like me — transnationals. The greatest phenomenon in this century, I am now convinced, has less to do with the World Wars than with the dispossessed those wars sent fleeing. Today displacement — movement — has become the contemporary narrative.

Today in America, in retirement, my father watches CNN and practices his martial arts. He does not expect history to be kind and is, therefore, not an unhappy man. He watches the collapse of communism around the world with glee and sips his wines.” Perhaps one day soon, when communism fails there too and democracy reigns, my father will return to Vietnam, if only to dance one last dance on his enemies’ graves.

Whereas I…

Every morning I write, rendering memories into words. Only this morning, waking from a recurrent dream in which I am diving into the ocean to retrieve a rusty gun, do I begin to appreciate how tricky history is, how powerful its grip on one’s soul. Always in the dream I reach out for the gun but it dissolves into sand, into mud, and sifts through my clutching fingers.

Every morning I write, going back further, re-invoking the past precisely because it is irretrievable. I write, if only to take leave.

A kiss then for my father as the weekend visit ends. I tear a hole through the army uniform’s plastic cover, lean close and sniff. There is no odor now of gun powder, no smell of scorched earth, no cigar stench — only the faint smell of mothballs, old dust.

Blind Pooch Gets Help Moving Around From Two Loving Pups

This dog can count on her furry friends to always have her back.

Kiaya, an Akita from Waterford, Michigan, lost both her eyes by the end of last year due to a battle with glaucoma. But the 10-year-old pooch can still get around fine, all thanks to Cass and Keller — two other dogs who help guide her, functioning much like seeing eye dogs.

“Her brothers are pretty amazing at the way they help to guide her around,” Gwen Sila, the veterinary ophthalmologist who operated on Kiaya, told ABC News. “Each of them will stand on either side of her so she doesn’t bump into anything and lead her around the yard.”

From left to right: Cass, Kiaya, and Keller.

The 10-year-old dog began getting assistance from Cass back in 2013 when her left eye was removed, the owner of all three dogs, Jessica VanHusen, said. Cass grew more attached to Kiaya and stayed by her side. After the pooch’s second eye was removed in November of last year, he stepped up his game. He’s become protective of his “sister.”

“Cass always allows Kiaya to get to her food dish first and waits for her to start eating,” VanHusen said, in a press release. “When I take them in the car, he leans against her to keep her steady because she sometimes gets a little off-kilter. He also loves to groom her.”

VanHusen says that Keller, who’s the youngest of the bunch, took a little longer to react to Kiaya’s condition but has become more and more careful and watchful.

Cass and Keller show incredible compassion, and VanHusen hopes that her dogs’ story will show others that caring for a special needs pet can be a beautiful thing.

“They’re an inspiration to everyone,” VanHusen said. “I hope others will see them and realize that a special needs pet deserves a chance. It takes a little effort, but it’s absolutely worth it.”

Sometimes, when an animal is in need, their furry friends step up to lend a helping hand. Tervel, a blind farm dog who is also partially deaf, was afraid to leave the safety of his bed, according to a National Geographic video. But a stray cat named Pudditat grew attached to him and later on began taking on the role of “guide cat,” helping the pooch get around.

“I think Pudditat must’ve realized that Tervel was a bit vulnerable,” the pooch’s owner said in the video. “He just seemed to know that there was a need there, somehow.”
