Looks from the J.W. Hulme collection.

Ernest Sabine has just doubled his workload.
The designer and founder of the accessories brand Ernest Alexander has been named creative director of J.W. Hulme Co., a leather goods and canvas products brand that was founded in 1905. J.W. Hulme, which is based in St. Paul, is best known for its handmade, heirloom-quality products and Old School finishing techniques.
Sabine, who started his Ernest Alexander label in 2009, is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and was the recipient of GQ’s Best New Designer in America award.
He said Dean Vanech, the owner of J.W. Hulme, “had been looking for ways to evolve the brand from both a product and branding point of view. My name came up and we connected. It instantly felt like a natural fit — there is a lot of crossover between my background in the men’s bag world and J.W. Hulme’s rich history of making beautiful bags and leather goods.”
Sabine said the initial deal is for one year with the potential to collaborate on future seasons. In addition to overseeing the artistic direction and aesthetics of the brand, he will also be involved in its marketing and advertising efforts.

Andy Janowski Named CEO of J.Hilburn

Andy Janowski has taken the reins at J.Hilburn, the direct seller of made-to-measure men’s wear.
Janowski most recently served as executive chairman of the J.Hilburn board and succeeds Veeral Rathod, cofounder and chief executive officer, who has resigned to explore other opportunities, according to the company.
Janowski has more than 30 years of experience in the apparel industry and had served as ceo of Smythson where he grew the brand 50 percent during his tenure. Janowski has also been chief operating officer at Burberry Group and also worked for the Gap Inc.
The change comes as the company has expanded beyond suits to more casual men’s offering such as chinos and shorts and has also added to its retail footprint. It had started as strictly a shirt brand but offers suits, sport coats, trousers, knitwear, outerwear, accessories and shoes.
The company was founded in 2007 by entrepreneur Hil Davis, who recruited Rathod, an investment banker, to join him in the business. Davis left the company in 2013.
In 2009, J.Hilburn secured institutional investment from Battery Ventures, a venture capital firm, and since then, it has been joined by two other investors, Janowski said. “But Battery continues to be a strong supporter.”

Helen Cammock Named Winner of Max Mara Art Prize for Women

The biannual award from the Italian label held in association with Whitechapel Gallery was presented on Monday evening. The London-based artist’s work spans across moving image, photography, writing, poetry, spoken word, song, performance, printmaking and installation.
“I have never before experienced a structured opportunity that encompasses travel, research, making and then showing over a sustained period,” said Cammock. “Over the six month residency I’ll find myself in a culture that is new to me, meet practitioners who work in different ways to me and consider how my practice can move into dialogue with new histories. It is an opportunity for space and time to focus on being an artist — this is perhaps the most significant aspect of this prize.”
Cammock’s residency will commence next month and she will travel to several Italian cities including Bologna, Florence, Venice, Rome, Palermo and Reggio Emilia. She plans to explore how emotions are expressed in Italian culture in formats such as opera, classical and folk music, art, poetry, writing

Jonathan Anderson Named Director of Loewe’s Board of Directors

BOARD GAME: Jonathan Anderson’s role at Loewe is no longer limited to the creative side of things. The designer has been appointed director of the company’s board of directors, Bernard Kuhn, general counsel for LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, said at the group’s annual general meeting Thursday. Sidney Toledano has been named the board’s chairman. The Madrid-based house falls under his purview in his role as executive chairman of LVMH Fashion Group.
The news comes on the heels of a wide-ranging reshuffle at the group which, in November, appointed Pietro Beccari as chief executive officer of Christian Dior Couture, succeeding Toledano.
Anderson joined the Spanish leather goods firm in 2013, bringing a strong fashion injection to the house, with former Céline executive Pascale Lepoivre coming on board as ceo in September 2016.
His runway debut at Loewe, a brand that dates back to 1846, came one year after LVMH took a 46 percent stake in his London-based signature label J.W. Anderson.

EXCLUSIVE: Winona Ryder Named L’Oréal Paris Brand Ambassador

L’Oréal Paris has tapped Winona Ryder to appear in a campaign tied to a massive rebrand of its U.S. hair business, WWD has exclusively learned.
A “robust, 360-campaign” comprising digital, social, TV and print advertising is set to launch Sunday during the Golden Globes with a TV commercial featuring Ryder, said Anne Marie Nelson-Bogle, senior vice president of marketing at L’Oréal Paris.
Titled “The Comeback,” the campaign is tied to the repositioning of the majority of the L’Oréal Paris hair-care products, including shampoos, conditioners and treatments, plus a few new products, under a new franchise called Elvive.
The Elvive platform focuses on damage prevention, a message L’Oréal is hoping U.S. consumers — fond of curling irons, blowouts, dry shampoo and bleach — will relate to. L’Oréal research found that eight in 10 women in the U.S. have damaged hair — and 18- to 34-year-olds in particular overindex in hot-tool-related damage.
“Everyone does love a comeback, and we will be communicating that damaged hair deserves one, too,” said Nelson-Bogle of the new campaign. “For Winona, we know that from TV sets to the red carpet, her hair has gone through many transformations — her hair is dry and damaged.”

SYDNEY – Dion Lee has been named the Australian Fashion Laureate for 2017.
The New York-based Australian was presented with the award at a gala dinner for 300 at Sydney’s Barangaroo Cutaway venue on Thursday evening.

Sephora Is Selling An Eyeshadow Named ‘Druggie’. Seriously.

There are moments when it’s important to marshal as much evidence as possible to back up an argument. And then there are moments like this.

Sephora is selling a new shade of eyeshadow called “Druggie.

The company describes the shade as “metallic purple with violet shift,” and it is part of Urban Decay’s “Afterdark” eyeshadow palette. Now, we get that fashion is an art form, even in a globally commodified context, and far be it for us to stomp on creative expression.

But by the time you have finished reading this article, it’s likely that somebody in the United States will have died of an opioid overdose. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 500 people, many of them young, are dying every week. Every 15 minutes, a new dead body is turning up in an emergency room, making orphans of children, breaking the hearts of parents and grandparents, the scourge of an entire generation.

Responding to complaints, Sephora has apologized but has not said it will drop the name. “We deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by the name of this shade. Please DM us for more information,” the company tweeted Friday in reply to a protest.

When reached by The Huffington Post, Sephora had this to say: “We deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by the name of this shade. We would never seek to do that. The shade was in a limited edition palette and was not planned to be re-ordered.”

HuffPost has reached out to Urban Decay and is awaiting comment.

Ryan Hampton, a recovery advocate for Facing Addiction told HuffPost that, while the apology is “a step in the right direction, Sephora clearly needs an education on substance use disorders. The recovery community is standing at the ready, and it’s our hope that their CEO not only pulls this product immediately but joins the national fight to face addiction.”

Still, Urban Decay’s ‘Druggie’ eyeshadow points out a big problem in the fashion and beauty industries, which have long histories of glamorizing addiction, even in the midst of the nation’s drug epidemic.

Hampton told HuffPost that Sephora said it would be meeting next week to decide how to handle the situation.

In the meantime, here’s a petition to help nudge them in the right direction.

Lil Yachty Named Creative Designer at Nautica

Nautica and Lil Yachty are deepening their relationship.
The heritage brand has brought the rapper on as a creative designer for 2017. This comes after Lil Yachty served as the face of a Nautica capsule collection for Urban Outfitters that was released last year.
In the role, the artist will design capsule collections and appear in digital and social media advertising campaigns. Nautica said these capsule collections will include rereleased vintage styles along with classic sportswear.
Long before partnering with Nautica officially, the 19-year-old was an enthusiast who regularly wore vintage styles from the brand, which connected with his affinity for all things nautical. He’s a part of a collective of artists who call themselves “The Sailing Team” and his stage name comes from “The Yacht Club,” a name he and his group of friends created in high school.
“Nautica is like a part of me,” said Lil Yachty, who’s known for his signature red, beaded braids. “It’s for kids, sailors, grown men and cool people.  The designs — the old designs, the new designs, I think it’s dope. There’s not really much out there like Nautica.”
Nautica on Friday released a limited-edition collection of pieces curated by Lil Yachty that included rereleases of vintage

Unveiled: Story of a Vampire Rapist and Serial Killer Named John

Unveiled: Story of a Vampire Rapist and Serial Killer Named John

Have you watched horror stories where vampires are the main characters? If you think that these supernatural beings are just part of your imagination, try to consider the possibility that they really exist. The night is filled with fear as a vampire could attack randomly. The extreme thirst for blood may turn anyone as the victim or prey. Having an encounter with a serial killer would be the worst experience ever. When we say “serial killer”, this person murdered more than two people, not just by shooting a gun or stabbing them with a knife. It is horrible to know that sexual contact is involved in most serial killings. Among the stories you have read, you may not have found yet this peak level of intensity. The version where John Brennan is the vampire rapist is where you will discover his brutal acts and dark intentions. This man had criminal backgrounds like rape and kidnapping. Specifically, Crutchley killed 32 women in his entire venture. Considering the fact that he drained his victim’s blood, he is indeed suitable for the title of “Vampire Rapist”.John was part of a wealthy family, but not of a circle of friends. Instead of interacting with the other young children outside, he preferred to explore his gadgets and play games. With his interest on technology-assisted equipment, his career was related to electronics. John Crutchley was able to earn a decent income from rebuilding stereo systems and doing radio repairs. This man has great potentials, making him competent in the company he was part of. He completed his course in physics within a reputable school in Ohio. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he never stopped learning. In fact, John Crutchley had his post-graduate schooling for the improvement of his skills in electronics. His diligence in studying is too far from his image of being a “Vampire rapist” and criminal. This man was feared due to his notorious acts. However, every individual has his own burden. By simply looking at him, we cannot instantly

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Welcomes a New Elephant Calf Named Stella

There’s a new princess in residence at Disney’s Animal Kingdom — and we’re not talking about the kind that wears glass slippers.

Her name is Stella and she’s a female elephant calf that was born recently at the Florida theme park.

In an announcement on its blog on Wednesday, the theme park said this beauty is the third calf born to Donna the elephant, 28, who has given birth to two other females, Nadirah in 2005 and Luna in 2010.

Stella is now one of 10 elephants — three males and six females — that live at the Animal Kingdom. People can catch a glimpse of the pachyderm family’s newest addition on the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction in Lake Buena Vista.

This adorable new baby definitely brings a new level of cuteness to Disney World. Watch the YouTube video above of her (wobbly) first steps in the savanna!

Victoria Beckham To Be Named in the Queen’s Honors List

ROYAL ACCOLADE: Although Queen Elizabeth’s annual New Year’s honors list is yet to be released, it appears one person is already planning her visit to Buckingham Palace.
According to the Daily Mail, Victoria Beckham will be named an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or OBE, in the Queen’s New Year’s honors list, which is set to be released on Saturday.
According to the British tabloid, the British designer revealed the news to her family over the Christmas holiday, saying that she is “delighted and humbled for the recognition.” The honor recognizes Beckham’s contributions to the British economy and to charity.
The designer’s husband, David Beckham was handed an OBE 13 years ago for his services to British sport.
A spokesperson for Beckham did not return requests for comment.

The honor would be the culmination of a successful year for Beckham, who launched her first makeup collection in partnership with Estée Lauder last September and watched it fly off the shelves.
As reported last month, she is set to release a second cosmetics capsule collection with Lauder in the new year, as well as a skin-care line with a niche beauty partner.

Detroit Just Named A Street After Stevie Wonder, And He’s Thrilled

Stevie Wonder moved out of Detroit years ago, but he’ll always have a home in Motown ― and now he can also lay claim to his very own street.

The legendary musician joined Mayor Mike Duggan Wednesday for the public unveiling of “Stevie Wonder Avenue,” a renamed portion of Milwaukee Avenue north of downtown. The new name is marked with a street sign at the corner of Woodward Avenue.

Prepping for the #StevieWonder street dedication ceremony today at Woodward and Milwaukee in #Detroit. #Street4StevieDetroit

A photo posted by carlotta.tutt.holloway (@carlottath) on

“This is just an amazing moment,” Wonder said at the dedication, his brother and Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) by his side. “I’m going to freeze this moment … and remember it forever.”

The spot has some significance for Wonder, who once lived on Milwaukee Avenue, according to the Detroit News. A mile west is Hitsville U.S.A., the former headquarters of Motown Records ― now home to the Motown Museum ― where Wonder got his start.

The artist thanked Conyers, saying the veteran congressman’s fight for equal rights has been an inspiration since his teenage years. Wonder took up the cause of championing social justice issues through his music.

He then took a moment during the celebratory press conference to get “real,” urging fans to focus on unifying the nation in the wake of divisions revealed by the presidential election.

“I’ve never seen none of you,” Wonder said, referencing his lifelong blindness, “so when I hear things about people not liking people because of the color of their skin, it is so absurd to me, so barbaric to me.

“I just say to you in this city, even in this state that has now become, at this point, a red state ― I’m just keeping it real ― don’t let the color of the state define who you are,” he added. “Don’t let negativity say this is what you are.”

Before the election, Wonder quipped that voting for President-elect Donald Trump would be like asking the blind musician to drive you to the hospital in an emergency.

“We are on a journey,” he said Wednesday. “When I think about this street, now being Stevie Wonder Avenue, I want all of us to walk down the street that leads us to a place of humanity and equality, of fairness and respect for each other.”

Wonder, 66, was born Stevland Hardaway Judkins in Saginaw, Michigan, and spent his childhood in Detroit. He was a musical prodigy, reportedly teaching himself to play the piano, drums and harmonica by age 10. A year later, Motown founder Berry Gordy offered him a record deal, and in 1963, “Little” Stevie Wonder landed his first of many No. 1 hits with the spirited live recording “Fingertips, Pt. 2.”

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the 1980s, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014, and has won more than 20 Grammys

“Naming this street in his honor is reflective of the profound impact that he has had on both the city of Detroit and Motown’s legacy,” Robin Terry, Motown Museum chairwoman and CEO, said in a statement ahead of the dedication.

It’s not the only new honor bestowed on Wonder. News site Slate has declared this “Wonder Week,” delving into the artist’s discography and his enduring influence on popular culture.

And if you read through Slate’s growing list of articles, you may as well listen to a seasonally appropriate soundtrack ― so here’s a compilation of Wonder’s Christmas songs

Nigel Barker Named Artistic Director at Flag and Anthem

Nigel Barker is putting his weight behind a new men’s wear brand founded by former Macy’s and Lord & Taylor buyers Azod Mohit and Brad Gartman, who helped grow the men’s business for brands including American Rag and INC.
The photographer will invest in the brand and has been named artistic director. Barker, who also invests in the buzzy Meatpacking District gym The Dogpound, was connected to Mohit and Gartman through a friend who is a part of Barker’s workout group at The Dogpound.
“I’ve never endorsed or gotten behind a specific brand in this kind of capacity ever in my history,” Barker told WWD. “But when I walked into the showroom I immediately had a reaction and thought these are exactly the kind of clothes that guys want to wear.”
Mohit and Gartman, who will preview the spring line at Project in Las Vegas this week,  believed there was a gap in the market for men leaving college who have graduated from teen specialty stores but can’t afford aspirational brands and have no interest in traditional men’s wear brands.
“This customer wants a bit of an edge. He wants a fit that’s more tailored and athletic and he wants price points that are digestible

Ben Higgins Named The Next ‘Bachelor’

Ladies, line up, because there’s a new Bachelor in town … and he’s a fan favorite.

Ben Higgins, who was “Bachelorette” star Kaitlyn Bristowe’s third choice, was named the new star of “The Bachelor” on Monday night’s episode of “After Paradise.”

The 26-year-old was pretty much a shoo-in to star on the upcoming season after Bachelor Nation supported his campaign following his exit from “The Bachelorette” on July 13. Although, Season 11’s Nick Viall did give Higgins a run for his money.

“I think he would be a great choice […] I have a lot of respect for Ben H. He is as sweet as everyone thinks he is,” Viall told HuffPost’s “Here to Make Friends” podcast earlier this month. “I might be giving myself too much credit, but Ben kind of reminds me of when I was 26.”

Higgins seemed to be everyone’s No. 1 choice. Even Amy Schumer called into “After Paradise” to wish him luck. “Find love, and then send some my way, OK?” she said.

The software salesman is excited to begin his journey on the show. “It’s incredible. People like me don’t get opportunities like this,” Higgins told Harrison. “I never thought that this opportunity would be something I could have.”

Higgins will be on “Good Morning America” to chat more about his upcoming season on Tuesday morning.

A Cat Named Limberbutt McCubbins Is Running For President! He’s A Demo-Cat.

A cat named Limberbutt McCubbins is running for president. He’s filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission and everything.

What sets McCubbins apart from the other 2016 hopefuls isn’t merely that he’s a 5-year-old neutered rescue kitty, though that is certainly one notable difference.

On this here 4th of July, I, Limberbutt McCubbins, promise to work my hardest for every American. If elected as your…

Posted by Limberbutt 2016 on Saturday, July 4, 2015

McCubbins is registered as a Democrat, but his campaign literature describes him as a “Demo-cat.”

And his slogan is suitably inspiring: “Together, we cat.”

“We are not taking donations at this time,” says 17-year-old Isaac Weiss, one of the cat’s two campaign managers. “If we later decided to take them, they will most likely be forwarded to the Humane Society or another organization for animals.”

Weiss tells The Huffington Post that the campaign started out as a joke. But once the FEC papers were filed, things started getting more serious.

“Me and my friends have begun to realize how easy it is to run for office, and have learned about the way the FEC and campaign finance work,” says Weiss. “Not that we don’t want anyone to run, but I personally don’t think that if I’m applying to run for the most important position in the U.S.A., that I should be able to do it in 20 minutes. Or less. And without immediately proving that I’m at least a U.S. citizen.”

Along with contemplating election reform, Weiss says the campaign’s other big issues right now are protecting the environment and the legalization of catnip.

And no, McCubbins wouldn’t have invaded Iraq, since the “climate is not favorable for a house cat.”

McCubbins’ extracurricular interests as “sleeping, playing with his scratching post” and tearing paper — especially model government paraphernalia — the cat-didate’s owner and co-campaign manager, 18-year-old Emilee McCubbins, says.

“He’s a good cat,” she adds.

Despite a patent lack of experience, as well as several other fatally disqualifying factors, Weiss tells HuffPost he hopes voters will see McCubbins as the right cat for the job, because “he’s ready to bring some fresh ideas to the table.”

“For over 200 years, man has been running the show,” he says. “And now, it’s cats’ turn to help lead the way.”

Scottish Ballet’s Erotic Streetcar Named Desire Raises Temperatures in Chicago

They almost had to hose down the audience at intermission of Scottish Ballet’s A Streetcar Named Desire at the Harris Theater in Chicago on Thursday night. Erik Cavallari’s Stanley had just had make-up sex with Sophie Martin’s Stella, and choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s imaginative way with the erotic pas de deux had everyone hot and bothered.

In a welcome departure from the one-note depictions of sex in the male-dominated world of ballet, the tiny, sinewy Martin calls the shots in this scene. The balance of power has shifted – after her husband struck her in a drunken rage, and she fled their claustrophobic New Orleans tenement apartment. Sober and whimpering upon her return, he spins and drags and upends her, at her hungry command; she flings herself at him repeatedly, in a flying half-twist, challenging him to catch her at the peak of her jump.

This is not a relationship that is likely to end well but, for now, Stella is in control, as she is at the mournful end of this Southern gothic tragedy, when she makes the anguished decision to commit her sister Blanche to a mental asylum. The sensual Martin is magnificent throughout, a firecracker. Cavallari, stocky and ripped, plays the sexual predator with attention to the small but explosive details of body language, wisely avoiding caricature – not an easy feat when you must swagger in the footsteps of Marlon Brando.

Having decided, in tandem with stage director Nancy Meckler, to flesh out Blanche DuBois’ backstory, to unravel the narrative and present it in chronological fashion, Lopez Ochoa rose to the challenge of portraying the assorted sex acts that, in Tennessee Williams’ 1947 classic, take place offstage, or are mentioned only in passing in the dialogue. She draws expertly and seamlessly from a range of dance styles, never straying far from classical ballet, in a manner that flaunts the dramatic and technical flair of this handsome company.

Sexual exploits start with the homosexual encounter between Blanche’s boyish husband Alan and a man whom he meets at their wedding dance – a variation on the Romeo and Juliet meet cute at the Capulets’ ball, that here manifests as an unaffected and moving duet. This leads to a brief threesome, full of intertwining arms and confused glances, until Blanche’s revulsion – or jealousy, or both – drives Alan to suicide. Throughout the evening, the figures of Alan, in bloodstained shirt, and his lover reappear to dance with Blanche whenever she slips into an alcoholic haze – a striking choreographic gambit that embodies her frequent hallucinations.

The DuBois family estate crumbles – literally, in a triumph of scenic design in which a massive backdrop, emblazoned with a hazy photographic image of a stately Southern plantation home, explodes into a mass of wooden packing crates – driving the destitute Blanche to prostitute herself in a seedy hotel. The hotel sex is impersonal, mechanistic, efficient.

2015-05-11-1431304168-7554174-_MG_2854.jpg
Eve Mutso as Blanche and Erik Cavallari in A Streetcar Named Desire. Photograph by Andrew Ross.

The lonely Blanche seeks comfort in seducing a young boy. In another twist on Romeo and Juliet (MacMillan’s version), the boy lies on his back as she perches on his raised shins, arching her spine into a crescent.

In the rape scene, movement and score are stripped to a stark minimum. After taunting Blanche (danced on Thursday and Friday evenings by the statuesque, mesmerizing Eve Mutso), stripping her and kicking her to the floor, Cavallari props her against the bed (assembled, like the rest of the set, from packing crates) and smashes her against it, accompanied only by what sounds like the repeated slamming of metal doors that won’t stay shut.

Even crumpled in stillness, Mutso conveys a mix of fragility and willpower. In motion, she calibrates her movement to suggest a constant sense of being slightly off-balance, on the brink of collapse, the elegant sweep of her preternaturally long arms and legs swiftly fractured by bent elbows and knees.

2015-05-11-1431304218-8403386-_MG_2992.jpg

Lopez Ochoa’s command of the ensemble is no less compelling than her portrayals of intimacy and domestic violence. She gives the crackerjack corps de ballet a stern Graham-based vocabulary with which to drive Blanche out of her home town. Maneuvering packing crates into two tight columns, they become a seething mass of humanity on the crowded streetcar named Desire. They form two rival teams in a bowling alley, their high-octane swing routine fired up by a jukebox. In the final scene, as the doctor in a lab coat arrives to take Blanche away, the men and women of the corps appear as a menacing crowd in identical black dresses, crimson carnations sprouting from their mouths – a surreal mushrooming of the scene in the play in which a blind Mexican flower seller offers Blanche a garish bouquet of “flores para los muertos” (flowers for the dead).

The ballet opens and closes with the same image of Blanche reaching for a naked light bulb that descends from the ceiling. With gently fluttering hands and skittering feet, her spine arching and twisting, her head thrown back in hope and trepidation, the layered skirt of her white dress floating as she pivots indecisively, she seems to hover delicately over the floor. The gossamery manner in which she steps on and off pointe and makes swift, fine-grained changes between quarter-pointe and full pointe, belies the wondrous plasticity of her insteps, and remarkable control.

Program notes tell us that Meckler and Lopez Ochoa were drawn to the image of a moth: Williams originally intended to title his play The Moth and makes reference in the play itself to Blanche’s “uncertain manner… that suggests a moth.”

Beyond the inventive uniting of drama, dance, score and set design to illuminate Williams’ psychological melodrama and caustic social commentary, this Streetcar brilliantly evokes the 19th century Romantic classic Giselle, in which a good-hearted peasant girl is driven to madness by the betrayal of a deceitful, two-timing aristocrat.

Ivor Guest could have had Blanche DuBois in mind when he recapped the first Act of Giselle, focusing on “the fragility of the heroine, her mind balanced between reason and madness.” Though Blanche is the aristocrat in Williams’ tale, she is twice betrayed – first by her secretly gay husband, and then by the working class Stanley, who resents her highfalutin ways, offended by the reminder that his wife comes from the same stock. The droit du seigneur exercised by the duplicitous Count Albrecht is here remodeled into the hypocrisy very much alive in 1940’s America, that allowed men to sow their wild oats and to treat their wives like possessions, while branding women who had sex outside marriage as damaged goods, outcasts, even insane.

There are thousands of papers stretching back over hundreds of years, affecting Belle Reve as, piece by piece, our improvident grandfathers and father and uncles and brothers exchanged the land for their epic fornications – to put it plainly!

Upon Giselle’s death (or suicide), she is drawn into a gang of ghostly, moth-like maidens, draped in layers of white gauze, who have been similarly jilted and are bent on revenge against all men. The Wilis and their icy, shimmering, relentless choreography in the second and final Act of Giselle reflected a 19th century anxiety about growing numbers of unmarried, unmoored women whose sexual appetites could not be contained.

In the second Act of Streetcar, as Blanche’s hold on reality becomes increasingly tenuous, the ensemble women join her in her moth-like fluttering under a score of naked lightbulbs that descend from the rafters; the stage dims to resemble the eerie nights in the forest policed by the vigilante Wilis.

19th century nerves were calmed when the dead Giselle saved Albrecht from death at the hands of the Wilis – a female self-sacrifice to ensure male survival.

In Streetcar, Stella sacrifices her sister in order to uphold the patriarchy.

The image of an irresistible but unattainable, and sometimes cruel, light is further cemented by the repeated deployment of Ella Fitzgerald’s recording of Harold Arlen’s ‘It’s Only a Paper Moon,’ that at strategic moments serves to highlight Blanche’s retreat into fantasies and fictions that make life more bearable (“it wouldn’t be make-believe/ if you believed in me.”)

Peter Salem’s heady score veers from lush, decorous waltzes to a hypnotic minimalist brume, fragments of New Orleans jazz and jukebox, occasionally shattered by the shrapnel of industrial sounds.

Only one element seemed lacking in the ingenious and austere set design: a lighting scheme to indicate the curtains which divide the cramped space in the Kowalskis’ flat – a crucial device in the play that underscored how lack of privacy stoked tensions between its inhabitants.

The only gratuitous detail in the marvelously inventive staging was Cavallari’s roaring of “STELL-LAHHHH!” after she escaped his drunken assault. Lopez Ochoa should have trusted her choreography – and the wailing solo saxophone that accompanied it – to convey Stanley’s brutish needs. After his poker buddies shove him into the bath to cool down, Cavallari rips off his water-logged T-shirt and chews up the stage in a desperate quest to track Stella down. There was no need to translate his magnificent body language into a verbal howl. Tennessee Williams would likely have edited that out.

Chris Hemsworth Named People Magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’

NEW YORK (AP) — People magazine has named Chris Hemsworth the “Sexiest Man Alive” of 2014, cheering the Australian actor’s rise as hammer-wielding, bone fide hunk in the “Thor” films.

Hemsworth, who also starred as Formula One racer James Hunt in the Ron Howard-directed “Rush” and the “Star Trek” reboots, was unveiled as the winner on Tuesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” When asked who he wanted to thank, Hemsworth told Kimmel his parents, “for putting this together.”

He joins a list of hunks with the honor, including Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Patrick Swayze, Sean Connery, Ben Affleck, Channing Tatum and Adam Levine. Mel Gibson, another Australian, was the first in 1985.

The 31-year-old star of “Thor: The Dark World” and his 38-year-old wife, Elsa Pataky of “Fast and Furious 6,” have three children. The actor’s younger brother, Liam, stars in the “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

Chris Hemsworth told People that the award “bought me a couple of weeks of bragging rights” around the house and with his wife. “I can just say to her, ‘Now remember, this is what the people think, so I don’t need to do the dishes anymore, I don’t need to change nappies. I’m above that. I’ve made it now.'”

Dolly Parton To Adopt Abandoned Dog Named For Her If Owners Don’t Come Forward

Country music legend Dolly Parton has offered to adopt a dog that was found abandoned at the Glastonbury Music Festival last week.

The white lurcher, described by the shelter caring for it as a “sweet-natured older lady,” was nicknamed Dolly after the singer, who drew rave reviews for her set during the festival’s final day.

“I had my manager call the Happy Landings animal shelter to make sure the dog is being treated and cared for properly,” Parton said in a statement quoted by the Guardian. “At this time, nobody has claimed the dog and the dog is in great hands at the shelter. I will take her home to America if nobody claims her within a reasonable amount of time.”

Dolly the dog was found with food and water inside a tent that was among 30 or 40 other abandoned tents. While the festival ended on June 29, the dog wasn’t discovered until workers cleaning up the area reached the tents on July 1.

“Loyal to the end she stayed in the tent, even though unzipped, waiting for her owner,” Happy Landings wrote on Facebook. “She was very thirsty and extremely stressed and it has taken her until today to properly relax and be able to sleep. How could anyone abandon this gentle soul?”

The shelter is treating the pooch for an ear infection and dermatitis.

But while Dolly is now guaranteed a home, many other animals are not. If you’re looking for a perfect animal companion, a shelter near you can help. In the United States, try Petfinder, Adopt-A-Pet or the ASPCA.
