New York Cares and The Fashion Foundation Help New Yorkers in Need

‘TIS THE SEASON: More than halfway to its goal of collecting 125,000 donated coats, this year’s annual New York Cares Coat Drive has less than a week to go.
New Yorkers can drop off coats at multiple locations including the group’s West 31st Street warehouse, any New York Police Department precinct, all Queens library branches and Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station through Dec. 31. Those who don’t have jackets to give can text “coat” to 41444 to donate money that will be used by the nonprofit to buy and deliver coats. The city has at least 1.7 million people living below the poverty line including 60,000 who are without permanent housing, according to a New York Cares spokeswoman.
The group has collected and donated 1.8 million coats to New Yorkers in need over the past 29 years. This year’s requests from shelters, social service agencies and schools is an increase compared to last year’s tally of 109,000 coats.
Another local group, The Fashion Foundation, recently wrapped up another charitable initiative. Founder Amanda Munz helped to brighten the holidays for 100 students in three different Brooklyn schools by arranging for each of them to receive a complementary gift-laden backpack. Opinion: The Justice League Comics Need Saving

Regardless of the critical reception to the Justice League movie, the team is currently in the midst of its biggest ever multimedia push. Now even the most causal of moviegoers are familiar with characters like Cyborg and Aquaman and concepts like Mother Boxes and the Speed Force. So with the Justice League becoming such a big deal in the Hollywood realm, why does it seem like the team has become such an afterthought in DC’s comics?

In general, the quality of DC’s comic book line has improved drastically since the start of the DC Rebirth relaunch last year. Rebirth reinvigorated all sorts of characters and franchises. Greg Rucka, Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott greatly elevated Wonder Woman. Tom King and his artists are crafting what has already become one of my favorite Batman runs of all time. Everyone from Green Arrow to Flash to Aquaman is in a drastically better place thanks to Rebirth. That’s to say nothing of all the fun, unexpected ways DC’s publishing line has grown in other areas, from the Hanna Barbera line to Gerard Way’s Young Animal imprint to the upcoming “New Age of DC Heroes” line.

How Ben Stiller and Cher Are Helping Hurricane Victims Who Are Still In Desperate Need of Water

Ben Stiller wants to make sure no one forgets that the people of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands still need help in the wake of the deadly hurricanes that devastated U.S. territories earlier year.

“There is a lot going on in the world and it’s easy for the news coverage to move on to the new thing, but these are our fellow Americans and they are still in need of our help,” the actor says of having his non-profit, The Stiller Foundation, partner with music legend Cher and Icelandic Glacial to donate over 600,000 bottles of water to the thousands of people on the islands who are still without access to running water.

“I am so glad I’m able to help in the way that me and my foundations has been able to but there’s something everyone can do. You don’t have to start big, you can help in even the smallest way and it can make a big difference,” says Stiller. “There’s a lot still to be done — and there will be for long time. We can’t forget about these people who need our support.”

“This tragedy has had a devastating impact on the communities, and water is one of the most basic needs to get everyone back on their feet,” says Jon Olafsson, Chairman and Co-Founder of Icelandic Glacial.

Adds CEO Reza Mirza, “With the assistance of Ben and Cher and the incredible reach of their voices, we hope that our water will not only reach the families in need, but also raise awareness for continued support from around the country.”

Cher first partnered with Icelandic in 2016 to provide clean water to the residents of Flint, Michigan, in the wake of their contaminated water crisis.

Scott Disick Says He ‘Doesn’t Need’ to Give Pregnant Khloé Kardashian Any Baby Advice

Scott Disick has three kids of his own — Mason, 7, Penelope, 5 , and Reign Disick, 2 — but he doesn’t think he needs to give pregnant Khloé Kardashian any advice about raising a child.

“Well, if she ever asks I’m sure I would try,” Disick, 34, told E! News at the opening of the Sugar Factory in Bellevue, Washington. “But I feel like all of us are so close that all of our children are kind of brought up in the same vicinity, or one block over, that everybody’s kind of there for each other.”

“I don’t really need to give advice per se because, we are right there. It’s not like long-distance, ‘Hey, maybe you should try this?’ ” he added. “Everybody’s so hands-on that I feel like it will happen within time. So no real advice in that sense.”

Although Kardashian — who is expecting her first child with boyfriend Tristan Thompson — has kept quiet about her pregnancy, even shooting down fans who speculated that she was showing signs of a baby bump in a recently released photo shoot.

In a recent post on her Instagram account of Kardashian modeling a “leather-like” tight denim mini skirt and matching peplum top from her Good American brand, fans quickly began to comment that they could see a baby bump. But even though the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star quickly shut the speculation down, she did leave social media users with a bit of hope.

“This is a peplum shirt. It out at the bottom. It’s just the way the shirt is designed,” she commented on the post. “In some of the next pictures coming up from the SAME shoot, I’m in a crop top. Showing a lot of skin … ”

PEOPLE learned in September that Kardashian, 33, and Thompson, 26, are expecting a baby.

RELATED VIDEO: Khloe Kardashian Is Pregnant! Revealed Days After Kylie Jenner’s Big Baby News

“Yes, Khloé and Tristan are expecting and they are absolutely thrilled,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “This isn’t something they were in a rush to announce to the whole world, and it’s only been in just the past week or so that they’ve felt comfortable telling most of their inner circle.

Kardashian and Thompson have been dating since September 2016

The pregnancy news came just four days after PEOPLE confirmed that Kardashian’s sister Kylie Jenner is expecting her first child, a daughter.

Earlier this week, Kardashian and Jenner were “full-blown twinning” in a Snapchat clip while filming a video for Jenner’s Kylie Cosmetics YouTube channel.

The Fashion Movies You Need to See this Fall

We all get to see what happens on the runway at fashion week, but so much more goes on behind-the-scenes. And this fall, three new fashion documentaries are giving us an inside look into the lives of the most influential tastemakers in the industry. Directors have captured the worlds of shoe designer Manolo Blahnik, designer Zac Posen, and influential editor André Leon Talley, to showcase their legacies like never before. And if documentaries just aren’t your thing, the co-founders of the innovative fashion label Rodarte have got you covered with their debut feature-length film that mixes fashion with an intricate narrative. Keep scrolling to see the trailers for these debut fashion films and get ready to plan your next movie night!

Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards

If you want to see the behind-the-scences magic behind creating the world’s most-sought after shoes then this is the movie for you. Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards is an 89-minute documentary, directed by British fashion journalist Michael Roberts, and the film delves into Manolo Blahnik’s fascination with footwear design, which ultimately led him to create his luxury brand. The doc features historic footage and exclusive one-on-one interviews with the biggest names in fashion (Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Naomi Campbell, and André Leon Telley) as they explain why ‘Manolos’ dominate the fashion world as the most iconic footwear of all time.

Release Date: September 15th

Where To Watch: Los Angeles (Landmark Quart) and New York (Landmark Sunshine)

House of Z

Take a look inside the world of renowned fashion designer Zac Posen with this documentary focused on the label he launched at just 21-years-old. The compelling trailer shows Posen’s rise to fame as a “child genius designer” and his sudden fall to what he calls the “dark side” of fashion. The film emotionally captures how Posen’s influence on the industry took its course and what he had to do to regain his status as a prominent tastemaker behind a well-respected brand.

Release Date: September 6th

The Gospel According to André

Former Vogue editor-at-large André Leon Talley uses his first ever documentary to showcase that his impact on the fashion industry was so much more than just sitting in the front row at fashion week. Director Kate Novack puts Talley’s entire life on display and nothing is off limits: from his childhood in the segregated South to his first gig in New York at Andy Warhol’s Interview to his big break as editor-at-large at Vogue. The raw footage of Talley and the who’s who of fashion, paint a vivid and personal portrait of the fashion legend like you’ve never seen before.

Release Date: September 8th

Woodshock

Rodarte’s co-founders, sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, are taking the designer-turned-director route with their debut feature-length film, Woodshock. Kirsten Dunst, who is close friends with the Mulleavy sisters and often wears their designs, stars in this trippy film as a grieving woman who deals with a very traumatic loss through heavy drug use. The film depicts Dunst’s character through her emotional downfall as she battles between facing her intense emotions and the distortion of her reality. Staying true to Rodarte’s vibe, the film is set in California against the backdrop of the visually stimulating redwood forests (the sisters are LA-based and grew up in the forests of Santa Cruz) and all of the costumes are designed by the sisters.

So THAT’S Why Some People Don’t Need To Use Deodorant

With rising temperatures and long summer days on the way, most of us are trying to figure out the best way to curb heavy sweating and body odor.

But if you’re one of the lucky few who don’t possess the gene that produces odor in your armpits ― it’s called ABCC11 ― you don’t even have to worry about deodorant.

According to the website LiveScience, the presence of the gene means that your armpits lack a chemical that, when combined with sweat, bacteria feeds on to produce smelly body odor.

In January 2013, Ian Day, a genetic epidemiologist at the University of Bristol and Santiago Rodriguez, PhD and senior lecturer in population and molecular genetics at Bristol Genetic Epidemiology Laboratories, co-authored a study on deodorant after surveying 6,495 women. The two found that 2 percent of participants (117 women) had the ABCC11 gene. Of those 117 women, 78 percent of them still wore deodorant even when they didn’t have to.

Though Day and Rodriguez’ study didn’t look at males, Day told LiveScience he thinks their research can be generalized. He also estimated in the interview that the rare gene is found in two percent of Europeans and nearly all East Asians and Koreans.

“These findings have some potential for using genetics in the choice of personal hygiene products,” Rodriguez said in a statement about the study. “A simple gene test might strengthen self-awareness and save some unnecessary purchases and chemical exposures for non-odor producers.”

For those of us who don’t have this lucky gene and tend to sweat a lot during the summer, try these helpful tips:

  1. Try an Rx-strength antiperspirant, which is particularly helpful for people who sweat a lot in the underarms, palms of hands or soles of their feet.

  2. Make sure to apply your antiperspirant at night, as it will help plug your sweat ducts better at that time, rather than in the morning.

  3.  Try Botox injections, which block the signals that turn on the body’s sweat glands at the injection spot.

The ABCs Of Fertility Treatments That You Need To Know

For BRIDES, by Kelsey Butler.

Infertility: It’s a topic that is definitely difficult to talk about, but extremely important to discuss as you think about planning for a family. In fact, with about one in eight couples having trouble getting or staying pregnant, it’s likely that you or someone you know is going through this tough battle. To make it even harder, there is an overwhelming amount of information out there (what the heck do some of these acronyms even stand for?). We’re breaking down some important guidelines on when it’s time to head to the doctor and the key fertility treatment terms you need to know.

“We usually define infertility as a woman attempting to conceive by having regular unprotected intercourse [for a certain period of time], depending on the woman’s age,” says Dr. Mazen Abdallah, a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. “If she’s younger than 35, we say a year of attempt without success. If she’s above the age of 35, we basically say six months of attempt without success. [At that point], we start a workup and then the treatment.”

See More: The 50 Most Beautiful Wedding Cakes Ever

Abdallah, also medical director of the Houston Fertility Institute, says more than half the time the cause of infertility can be determined by a doctor asking questions and reviewing a patient’s history. Here are some of the courses of treatment that can be taken:

Ovulation induction

If a woman is not ovulating, Abdallah says, certain medication will be used (in either pill or shot form) to help her do so. The next step will be continuing to try to conceive through intercourse or via insemination.

IUI (intrauterine insemination)

This procedure is used when there is a mild decrease in the sperm count or motility, or in combination with ovulation induction to up the chance of conception, or also in rare cases when the cervical mucus is abnormal, Abdallah says. To get more specific, in this process the sperm is separated from the semen by “sperm washing” (yup — you read that correctly!) and is placed in the uterus right around the time of ovulation, he notes. According to fertility expert Cristina Torres, CEO and cofounder of Seed, a non-stimulated IUI cycle is one of the least invasive and least expensive fertility treatment options.

See More: The Prettiest Wedding Dresses From the Runway

IVF (in vitro fertilization)

This is often the course of action when there are concerns about a woman’s fallopian tubes being blocked, or if there is some sort of pelvic disease such as adhesions. It is also used when the sperm count or motility is profoundly abnormal, or when the cause of infertility is unexplained and other treatments did not work, Abdallah says. He explains that initially, medication is administered to help a woman produce 10 to 12 eggs. “Then we fertilize the eggs in the lab and the fertilized egg becomes an embryo,” he says. “You grow the embryo for five to six days in an incubator and then you do an embryo transfer and put that embryo in the uterus.”

ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection)

Like IVF, ICSI also involves fertilizing an egg outside the body, in a laboratory, and then implanting it into a woman’s uterus. To break it down further, it differs from IVF in that ICSI is a laboratory procedure in which a single sperm is injected into an egg, typically due to low sperm motility. In IVF, the egg and sperm are mixed together in a dish without further intervention. IVF and ICSI are the “most common and effective types of assisted reproductive technology,” Torres says, though they are some of the most invasive “as they involve a medicated cycle and an egg retrieval procedure.”

See More: What Not to Say to Your Friend Who is Engaged and Pregnant

Mini-IVF (minimal stimulation IVF)

This differs from conventional IVF in that less medication is administered, so that only two to three eggs are produced at a time, compared to 10 or more with conventional IVF. “This is actually tailored to women who do not do well with IVF,” Abdallah says, such as women who are a bit older or have tried IVF in the past and did not have an optimal result.

Egg freezing

This procedure is one of the newest fertility treatments available, according to Abdallah. A woman will undergo an IVF cycle, with medication being administered that will allow the eggs to mature. The eggs are then collected, frozen and stored until it’s a better time for conception. This was originally used for women who were contending with health problems or set to go through intense medical treatments such as chemotherapy. Now, it is available to any woman who wants to preserve her chances of conceiving but isn’t quite ready.

Why ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Is The Broadway Show Parents Need To See

“Does anybody have a map? Anybody maybe happen to know how the hell to do this? I don’t know if you can tell. But this is me just pretending to know. So where’s the map? I need a clue. ‘Cause the scary truth is I’m flying blind. And I’m making this up as I go.”

So goes the first song in “Dear Evan Hansen,” one of the most buzzed-about shows this Tony Awards season. “Does Anybody Have a Map?” is sung by two mothers who are struggling to connect with their teenage sons, and as some have noted, the number is basically a parenting anthem.

Starring Ben Platt (of “Pitch Perfect” fame), “Dear Evan Hansen” tells the story of a high school senior with social anxiety who, through a misunderstanding, becomes enmeshed in the aftermath of a classmate’s suicide. Although the plot of musical centers around the titular protagonist and his high school world, the theme of parenthood is also a key component of the show.

Rachel Bay Jones plays Evan’s mother, while Jennifer Laura Thompson and Michael Park play the parents of Connor Murphy, a troubled student who dies by suicide early in the show. All three actors are parents themselves, and their powerful performances speak to the love and heartache of raising children today.

Jones, Park and Thompson spoke to HuffPost about their emotional roles and the way this play has interacted with their own parenting experiences.

Jones, who has a 14-year-old daughter named Miranda, told HuffPost she believes songs like “Anybody Have a Map?” really resonate with parents. “You have absolutely no idea what you’re doing. You read so many conflicting books, and advice from everybody is so different,” she said.

“And when they become teenagers, they change, and you sort of wake up and realize they’re not your baby anymore,” she added. “Because they’re not communicating with you the way that they used to, you don’t have any idea how to handle the things that come up, ― you don’t know what’s going on. Sometimes you think you do, but then you find out you have absolutely no idea.”

Jones believes that parents can connect with the show from the very beginning, as the opening scenes show groups of family members “trying understand each other and completely missing.”

Thompson echoed her co-star’s sentiments. “The books will tell you what milestones are going to be hit, what cures nighttime crying and feeding problems, and all of the issues that the average child will go through,” she told HuffPost. “But there’s really no such thing as an average child. Every child is made up of a different set of challenges and those are the things, the unexpected things that make us all flounder as people.”

The actress has a 13-year-old son named Tommy. In a way, “Does Anybody Have a Map?” takes her back to the day she brought her baby home from the hospital.

“I thought, ‘They’re gonna let me leave with this person?’ I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I didn’t feel responsible, didn’t feel prepared, even as much as I’d read and set up nursery and had all the things I thought I needed. I was terrified.”

She continued, “We spend a lot of time being scared early on. Everyone will tell you that nothing can prepare you for parenthood. It’s gonna change your life. And people who don’t have children just brush it off as, “Yeah, yeah, I get it.” But It’s really so far beyond what you can expect that there’s no comprehending what that phrase means until you have a young being in your presence that belongs to you.”

For Jones, the play spoke to her on another level, as her character Heidi is a single mother like she is in real life. Though she has a long-term partner now, she and her daughter’s father separated when Miranda was very young.

“There’s a very specific kind of relationship that develops when it’s just the two of you against the world ― especially when there’s hardship, when there’s not the support of family close by,” she explained.

“And that has been the case for me with my daughter. Struggling to keep us afloat, struggling to give her the things she needs to make life gentler for her while really being in it as a working person is something I know very well. So I come to this with my own experience,” she added.

In addition to drawing from their own experience for their roles, the actors have also brought lessons from “Dear Evan Hansen” to their parenting.

Park said this was particularly true for him. The actor has three kids, 19-year-old Christopher, 17-year-old Kathleen and 13-year-old Annabelle. His character Larry is a corporate lawyer dealing with the aftermath of his son’s suicide and his regret that he wasn’t able to get through to Connor.

In many ways, playing Larry has changed Park’s approach to raising his children and his understanding of the value of communication.

“I say this all the time. I’m so grateful for ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ because it has made me a better communicator with my kids, it has made me a more open human being in the relationship I have with my wife, and it has made me a better parent,” Park told HuffPost. “I’ve benefitted in ways that I cannot articulate as a husband, as a father and as as son.”

Though Larry had become a bit closed off from his son, Park urges his fellow parents to be open and persist in their efforts, even when it feels impossible.

“I beg you to reach out and never stop communicating with your son or daughter or grandparent or your uncle or your aunt,” he said. “Never stop communicating. Try and try again. And when the door shuts, find a way to open that door again.”

Evoking the Act I finale “You Will Be Found,” Park said he believes both parents and teens need the reminder that they are not alone. “At the end of the day, that’s what the show is all about: being found, knowing you aren’t going through this by yourself,” he explained. “Someone is always out there for you.”

“Dear Evan Hansen” is a show that feels very relevant today, as it tackles the theme of being a teenager on social media and the way the internet affects high school life.

“I think social media tends to magnify the issues that we all have with feeling connected, feeling disconnected, feeling less than, trying to one-up each other, trying to connect with each other,” Jones explained.  “It exacerbates all of these issues that have always existed, especially in the life of a teen.”

In the play, the parents only enter into the social media world their kids inhabit in a few times, and when they do, the experience overwhelms them. “I find that’s pretty real, when I touch on what life must be like for my teenager in her world of social media ― it is overwhelming.”

Park said he believes technology and social media are “double-edged swords” because they has the ability to bring people together for powerful causes but also inhibit one-on-one communication between individuals.

“When my daughter is downstairs and texting me to come down and make a sandwich, there’s a problem there,” he joked, adding that he doesn’t mind using technology restrictions as a punishment though. Ultimately, he said of social media and technology: “I’m grateful, I’m dismayed, I’m confused and happy all at the same time.”

Another theme is the connection between class and parenting, particularly as Heidi struggles to make ends meet between her job as a nurse’s aide and time spent at night school studying to become a paralegal. Meanwhile, Connor’s mom, Cynthia, leads a more affluent life.

“The show really deals with class issues in a beautiful way, in a really profound way,” said Jones. “These two mothers are both completely worthy moms. But when you’re a working class mother, you unfairly idealize these wealthy women who are able to be whoever they want to be as a parent, and that makes you feel inadequate all the time because you cannot provide for your kid what these perfect moms are able to provide.”

Although it’s true that wealth provides more opportunities, both Jones and Thompson said they feel none of that really matters when it comes to being a good parent.

Thompson said she believes the play crushes some of the images of perfection that parents idealize. “Just because you have money and seem happy has nothing to do with your quality of life,” she said. “Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors.”

“Dear Evan Hansen” has received nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Jones. One of her most poignant moments is her solo number, “So Big / So Small” ― an emotional song about her split from Evan’s father and journey as a single mother.

“It really somehow gets to the heart of everything that we feel as parents,” said Jones. “The need to be known by our children and forgiven for our flaws. The need to show our kids that even if we’re flawed and even if we mess up over and over and over again, that we really do love them and really are here for them. And that they have us always to come home to.”

The actress said she’s amazed that the songwriters, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, are two young, childfree men.

“I’ve known those guys for a long time, and I’ve always said they write the best mom songs,” she said. “I think they just happen to have really great relationships with their moms, and they really understand all of us.”

Jones, Park and Thompson said that one of the most powerful parts of their work in “Dear Evan Hansen” has been the response from other parents.

“I’ve received a couple of letters from mothers thanking us for telling this story, particularly Cynthia’s story or the mom’s story, because it’s not one that’s talked about very much,” Thompson said, adding that she’s also been moved by the response from fans waiting outside the theater.

“There are so many times when there’s a teenager waiting to get a signature but there’s a parent behind them in tears thanking me for telling this story,” she said.

“Just the other night, a lovely woman with her daughter walked up to Rachel Bay and me and explained that the show was so important and was very emotional,” Thompson recalled. “They said her son had committed suicide and the young woman was his sibling. They were so moved and touched by the story being told, and that felt very rewarding.”

Jones said she believes “Dear Evan Hansen” helps people understand each other. “So often, there’s a generational divide that starts in the teenage years that never fully heals until we’re parents ourselves and we begin to understand.” she explained, noting that teens in the audience come away a better sense of their parents’ experiences, while parents are remembering what it feels like to be a teenager.

She said she constantly hears positive feedback from kids and parents ― especially single moms and children of single moms. “So many women are thanking me for this portrayal of Heidi,” she said. “So many children are thanking me for allowing them to see their mother and the struggles that she must’ve gone through.”

Added the actress, “There’s no more gratifying experience for me as a person than to to hear that come back to me, that in any way the show we’re doing is connecting people in this way.”

Everything You Need to Know About the 2017 Billboard Music Awards

Pop your popcorn and cozy on up to the couch. The 2017 Billboard Music Awards are nearly here!

Billboard‘s annual honors, celebrating music’s biggest chart-topping artists, have been airing since 1989 – though took a four-year break for contract negotiations in 2007.

This year’s show will air live on both costs from Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena on Sunday, May 21 (at 8 p.m. ET) on ABC.

Here’s everything you need to know:

Who’s Hosting?

Ludacris will return as co-host for the fourth consecutive year, alongside first-time co-host Vanessa Hudgens.

“I’M BACK FOR YEAR NUMBER 4 so I must be doing something right!” the 39-year-old star wrote on Instagram.

Hudgens, 28,  also posted about the gig on Instagram — writing, “I’m so unbelievably excited to host the @BBMAs this year with @Ludacris!”

Who’s Performing?

Like any good awards show, the BBMAs will be packed full with performances — beginning with Nicki Minaj who will open the show with a 9-minute performance featuring Lil Wayne, Jason Derulo and David Guetta. The set will be a celebration of the 34-year-old rapper, who recently beat Aretha Franklin‘s long-standing record for female artist charting the most songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

Elsewhere on the show, The Chainsmokers will sing their new hit single “Young” — while Halsey will perform “Now or Never” from her forthcoming album, and Sam Hunt will perform his No. 1 Billboard Hot Country Songs hit “Body Like a Back Road.”

Florida Georgia Line and John Legend will be just one of the evening’s surprising collaborations. The two will team up for a superstar duet, mixing their country and soulful pop styles in a cover of mashup of FGL’s  “H.O.L.Y.” and Legend’s “Surefire.”

RELATED VIDEO: Lea Michele Calls Céline Dion an ‘Incredible Inspiration’

Céline Dion will take the stage to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her smash hit “My Heart Will Go On” — just a year after winning the show’s prestigious ICON Award.

That honor this year goes to Cher, who — “Believe” it or not — will turn back time for her first live awards show performance in more than 15 years. After singing her ’90s anthem, “Believe,” she’ll accept the honor — joining previous winners Jennifer Lopez, Prince, Stevie WonderNeil Diamond, and Dion.

Expect other showings from Bruno Mars, Camila Cabello, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, Lorde, Julia Michaels and Miley Cyrus — the latter singing her new single “Malibu.”

What About the Nominees?

Drake and The Chainsmokers lead the nominees with 22 nods each. Not far behind them are Twenty One Pilots with 17 nominations, Rihanna with 14, The Weeknd with 13 and Beyoncé with eight.

Finalists are based on Nielsen U.S. year-end chart performance – determined by collecting data on sales, number of downloads and total airplay. Michael Jackson has 40 career wins – the most by any male artist. Janet Jackson has the most awards for female artist, with 33 wins.

The three biggest awards of the evening are top artist, top Billboard 200 album and top hot 100 Song – won last year by Adele, her album 25 and Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again,” respectively.

Fans can also vote on two awards — top social artist (Nominees of which include Justin Bieber, BTS, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Shawn Mendes) and Billboard chart achievement award (where Minaji, Luke Bryan, The Chainsmokers, The Weeknd, and Twenty One Pilots are competing).

A full list of nominees can be found here.

And the Presenters?

Buckle up – because Hollywood’s brightest will be hitting the stage to hand out awards on Sunday night.

Here’s What You Need To Know About Duchess Kate’s Topless Photo Lawsuit

A court trial regarding a 2012 series of topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge finally began on Tuesday in France, The Telegraph reports.

At the time the photos were taken, Prince William and the Duchess (formerly known as Kate Middleton) were on vacation in Provence, France. The images ran in the French publication Closer, and were met immediately with disdain from the palace.

“Their Royal Highnesses have been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner,” a statement from the palace read. The statement also called the incident a reminder of the 1997 death of Princess Diana, reminding her family of “the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting for the duke and duchess for being so.”

The royal family threatened legal action in 2012. Now six people, including three photographers, are being questioned in France in connection with the images and their distribution.

According to The Telegraph, a written statement from William was read by the family’s lawyer in French, and it called the photos shocking and unexpected. “We know France and the French and we know that they are, in principle, respectful of private life, including that of their guests,” he said.

He also reiterated that the situation reminded him of what Diana dealt with in her own life. The pair is seeking 1.5 million euros, or a little over 1.6 million U.S. dollars in the suit.

At the time the photos were released, Closer’s editor defended its decision to publish the photos, stating that “ these are pictures that are full of joy. The pictures are not degrading.”

We’ll have to wait and see what the court has to say about that.

Bride And Her Bridesmaid Ditched Bouquets For Puppies In Need Of Homes

This is one un-fur-gettable bridal shoot.

For her March wedding in Charlotte, North Carolina, bride Meghan Butler and her bridesmaid traded floral bouquets for puppies in need of a good home.

The photos ― taken by the bride’s friend Brittany Boland of Discover Love Studios in Symphony Park ― are paws-itively adorable:

“I almost forgot I was getting married that day for part of the time because I was surrounded by my mom, best friends and rescue pups!” Butler, 30, told The Huffington Post.

Instead of handing out wedding favors to guests, the couple made donations to the Greater Charlotte SPCA, the shelter that provided the adorable dogs:

Butler and her husband Brett share their home with two dogs and two cats and pet adoption is a cause close to their hearts.

“Our hope was that the photos would help bring an end to the puppy mill by raising awareness for the many animals in shelters and foster homes that need forever homes,” she said.

The good news? All the pups who volunteered their ~modeling~ services for the shoot were adopted. And in case you’re wondering, no puppies peed on anyone during the cuddly shoot.

“The thought did cross my mind beforehand,” Butler told us. “Luckily, one of my wedding colors was yellow so it would’ve fit right in ― kidding of course!”

Duchess Kate Says We Need To Talk About The ‘Stresses And Strains’ Of Parenthood

The Duchess of Cambridge knows the emotional challenges women can face when they become mothers.

On Thursday, the former Kate Middleton delivered a powerful speech about motherhood and mental health at the launch of a series of educational films from the charity Best Beginnings. Titled “Out of the Blue,” the series covers topics like mental health during pregnancy, bonding with your baby and postpartum well-being.

“Personally, becoming a mother has been such a rewarding and wonderful experience,” she said. “However, at times it has also been a huge challenge, even for me who has support at home that most mothers do not.”

The duchess and her husband, Prince William, are parents to 3-year-old George and 1-year-old Charlotte.

“Nothing can really prepare you for you the sheer overwhelming experience of what it means to become a mother,” Kate said in her speech. “It is full of complex emotions of joy, exhaustion, love and worry all mixed together. Your fundamental identity changes overnight. You go from thinking of yourself as primarily an individual, to suddenly being a mother, first and foremost.”

She continued, “And yet, there is no rule book, no right or wrong — you just have to make it up and do the very best you can to care for your family. For many mothers, myself included, this can, at times lead to lack of confidence and feelings of ignorance. Sadly, for some mothers, this experience can be made so much harder due to challenges with their own mental health.”

The duchess cited some statistics about the number of women who face mental health challenges during pregnancy and after giving birth. Although it is quite common, many mothers struggle to speak out about their issues due to feelings of fear and shame, she noted.

“Some of this fear is about the pressure to be a perfect parent ― pretending we’re all coping perfectly and loving every minute of it,” Kate said. “It is right to talk about motherhood as a wonderful thing, but we also need to talk about its stresses and strains. It’s OK not to find it easy, and asking for help should not be seen as a sign of weakness.”

She added, “If any of us caught a fever during pregnancy, we would seek advice and support from a doctor. Getting help with our mental health is no different. Our children need us to look after ourselves and get the support we need.”

To promote mental well-being, Kate suggested parents first turn to friends or other people they trust to talk out their feelings and have conversations about mental health in everyday life.

In honor of Mother’s Day, which the U.K. celebrates this weekend, she concluded her speech with a call for everyone to honor moms and the important roles they play in their families.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have committed themselves to promoting conversation around mental health and breaking down the stigma of mental illness. In 2016, they launched an initiative called “Heads Together” and frequently visit organizations dedicated to providing mental health support

In her speech on Thursday, Kate also recognized the attacks that took place on Wednesday.

“I know you would all want to join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to all those sadly affected by yesterday’s terrible attack in Westminster,” she said. “We will be thinking of all the families, as we discuss the important issues we’re here to talk about.”

Transgender Model To Caitlyn Jenner: ‘We Do Not Need You To Save Us’

Transgender model Isis King tweeted a blunt open letter to Caitlyn Jenner on Friday after the reality star criticized the Trump administration’s decision to rescind Obama-era guidance that protected transgender students in public schools.

King, the first openly transgender contestant to compete on “America’s Next Top Model,” calls out Jenner in the letter, referencing an incident at the TransNation Queen USA Pageant in October in which Jenner allegedly ignored King’s presence, then cut in front of her to take an empty elevator for herself and her team.

“I could not believe that this happened to me and immediately felt as if I had just been asked to move to the back of the bus,” King writes in the letter. “It was as if I was not good enough, not worthy enough, not rich enough, not famous enough to ride with these three white women. … The amount of privilege that was thrown in my face made me feel so uncomfortable.”

King seemed to suggest that the insult represents a larger issue in the trans community when it comes to power, privilege and visibility: “I have, like so many women of color, helped blazed [sic] trails for our sisters, brothers and siblings, and I have seen how you treated me. We do not need you to save us.”

On Thursday, Jenner tweeted a video message directed at President Donald Trump “from one Republican to another,” calling Trump’s blow to the rights of trans students a “disaster” and telling the president “we’ll see you in court.”

The video was met with harsh criticism from parts of the LGBTQ community. Jenner was an outspoken supporter of Trump during the 2016 election ― even attending his inauguration.

UPDATE: 1:25 p.m. ― King said in an interview with TooFab.com that Jenner called following the tweet of the open letter, and the pair have now “resolved everything.”

4 Stupid Myths About Dating In Your Twenties You Need To Stop Believing

For Glamour, by Suzannah Weiss.

If you believe the buzz about millennials—the group of people reaching young adulthood in the early 21st century—you’ve probably heard the statement that we’re the generation that ruined dating. Supposedly, we’re constantly buried in our apps, we barely interact in person, and when we do, it’s just for casual hookups. Hell, we’ve even been credited with ushering in an actual dating apocalypse. But is there evidence to support these ideas, or have they just been drilled into us by the media?

Every year, the dating site Match surveys single Americans ages 18 and up to examine these kinds of beliefs about dating, sex, and love. And—surprise—a lot of them are totally off, according to the 5,509-person analysis. Here are some of the myths about twentysomethings that this year’s Singles in America survey will hopefully put to rest for good.

1. We're done with dating.

While it might seem like people have progressively come to prefer casual sex to dating, the majority of singles are either actively looking for a relationship (22 percent) or open to one if the opportunity presents itself (42 percent). Almost half of singles (41 percent) dated last year, and twentysomethings are the generation most likely to have done so. We’re also 30 percent more likely than other generations to want a relationship this year.

2. We're wasting our time with dating apps.

A lot of us have heard our friends (or ourselves) rant about how online dating doesn’t work and meeting through friends is so much easier. But the reality is, dating app users were four times more likely to date in 2016. In fact, dating apps were a more common means for meeting people, with 40 percent of actively dating singles getting their most recent first dates that way, rather than through mutual friends (only 24 percent). Complaining about Tinder will always be a favorite millennial pastime, and many of our complaints—like the creepy messages we receive—are totally valid. But the claim that it just doesn’t work is not.

3. We're having a ton of sex.

Compared with our parents’ generation, we’re 51 percent more likely to be totally uninterested in sex. (Confirming that finding, a study published last year found that people in their twenties and early thirties have less sex than baby boomers and Gen Xers.) We’re also, for whatever reason, 66 percent less into oral than other generations. And despite fearmongering about our generation’s penchant for empty promiscuity, we’re actually 40 percent more likely to believe emotional intimacy enhances sex.

4. Online dating is only for the most desperate among us.

Nowadays, online dating is the absolute norm. Most singles (53 percent) have made a profile at some point, and almost half (40 percent) have met a date online. This is especially true for millennials: Fifty-seven percent more millennials than people of other generations have created profiles, and 75 percent more than baby boomers have gone out with someone they met online. Dating apocalypse, be damned.

Why You Need to Fire Your Inner Monday Morning Quarterback

2017-02-06-1486419171-9252521-shutterstock_148161395.jpg

It’s no surprise that all of the Monday morning quarterbacks have shown up in full splendor today, following the biggest comeback in Super bowl history. Full disclosure: I’m a lifelong New Englander, but promise not to say something like “Hellooooo, haters”, or “we’re wicked awesome” in a thick PAAHHK the CAAAH Boston accent between sips of Dunkin’ Donuts.

In case you didn’t know, a Monday morning quarterback (MMQB) is a person who criticizes, passes judgment, and offers hindsight solutions to problems. They are very easy to find today across talk radio, TV, and social media feeds.

They should’ve done this or that. Why on earth didn’t they see it? They made such a textbook mistake. It’s all SOOO obvious. OMG.

Psychology can help explain why hindsight bias is such a trap for us. That feeling that “we knew it all along” arises from our tendencies towards creating stories that make sense based on the information we have. Researchers Neal Roese and Kathleen Vohs suggest that our desire for closure makes us apt to promote a positive view of ourselves. We get all puffed up, even when the conclusions we draw are incorrect.

Hindsight bias can prevent us from learning from experiences, or taking a deeper dive into the forces at hand, and coming up with a more accurate analysis of what’s transpired.

Most of us are not professional sports players, with millions of eyes on us, but we’ve all faced our own versions of MMQB’s, jousting us with “I told you so’s” and “what were you thinking’s”. Worse, many of us struggle with our own pesky inner MMQB that constantly needles us through the play by play of our lives.

I should’ve never done that. Why didn’t I realize it at the time? How stupid can I be?

While reflecting on mistakes is a vital part of our growth and progress, all the ‘shoulding’ that comes from our inner MMQB can sabotage happiness and wellbeing. Here’s how to fire a reactive, overly critical MMQB, and replace with a more rational, wise one:

1. Silence your inner hater. Do you tend to call yourself names, instead of cutting yourself some slack? Do you take a disproportionate amount of blame in a situation that’s gone wrong? Do you feel a constant sense of under accomplishment, no matter how much you’ve done? These are red flags that your inner MMQB needs walking papers.

2. Review the tape. Do you think every move you’ve made has gone wrong? Do you see your mistakes as catastrophic with no room for learning? Your MMQB might be going purely off the amygdala, the mechanism in your brain that regulates fear responses. Take a needed break to regroup and revisit once the frontal lobe, the part of the brain responsible for reason, has time to review the play more accurately.

3. Stay agile. Do you feel a sense of dread and doom? Does it seem like there’s no way out? Stay on your toes, and be ready to pivot away from original conclusions you have drawn. Train your inner MMQB to rethink first glances, and check for new alternatives and approaches to the problems you face. Be on the lookout for opportunities to change directions. So much falls out of the realm of our control, and while we can’t always win, we can learn to adapt and stay in the game for the long haul.

Hindsight might not be as 20/20 as we’d like. If your inner MMQB has become obnoxiously full of unsolicited, negative advice, now is the time to fire and rehire one that is more rational, compassionate and nimble.

Ten Things You Need to do Before You Turn Thirty

What are 10 things that you should definitely do before turning 30? originally appeared on Quorathe place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Answer by Max Lukominskyi, Founder of Perfect Impulse, on Quora:

Ten things you should definitely do before you turn thirty:

  1. Get Your Heart Broken. It is not the most pleasant experience in life. Unfortunately, it is inevitable. However, it is the invaluable lesson everyone should go through. Get your heart broken to learn the hard way how cruel and tough the life can be.
  2. Realize That Life Has Already Begun. The sooner you do this the sooner you will be able to start doing the things that matter. Every decision matters and every choice counts. There is no interlude. Nor is there a trial version. Therefore, strive to live a meaningful life now.
  3. Write An Article. Develop a strong point of view regarding the particular issue and do your best to express your thoughts in the best way possible. Get your voice featured on the popular outlet and praise yourself for this small accomplishment.
  4. Master A Valuable Skill. Your ability to apply your knowledge and produce some great results is what lets you stand out and makes others pay you for your services. Opt for mastery and strive to become the best at what you do.
  5. Slay Your Fears. Stop living your fears as soon as possible. Do not enter the fourth decade of your life being afraid of trivial things. Learn to live beyond your comfort zone and slay your fears to live the life to the fullest.
  6. Establish A Few Useful Connections. You cannot know everyone and know how to do everything. The good thing is that you do not need to. Meanwhile, you can meet some great people that can give a valuable advice or come in your hour of need.
  7. Live Abroad For At Least A Year. Living abroad is not always fun and easy. This experience is often full of struggle and difficulties. Learn how to adapt to and survive in unfamiliar environments. Find out how to meet new friends and get used to a different culture.
  8. Establish A Good Habit Attitude. Then you won`t need to break a bad one. Habits might seem innocuous daily actions that do not make any impact on your life. In fact, they define how productive and successful you are. Adopt the habits that are the perfect fit for a person you`d like to be.
  9. Define Your Goals. Make sure you are not going to float along after you are 30. Make sure you get closer to the things you want to accomplish with every step you take. Make sure you know what you want and channel your energy towards attaining your goals.
  10. Get Into Challenging Environment. If you are not willing to start stagnating too soon, surround yourself with the people that are smarter, stronger and faster than you. They will motivate you to catch up and become better than you ever thought possible.

John Lewis’ Book Will Be Donated To Schools In Need

Last week, Donald Trump tweeted spurious claims about Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), writing that the activist, who’s been repeatedly arrested for protesting, was “All talk, talk, talk ― no action or results.”

“Sad!” the president-elect continued.

If you’re interested in reading about Lewis’ past accomplishments, there’s plenty of available material. But he also continues to spread his message today, via both words and action. Last year, March: Book Three, a graphic novel co-written by Lewis, was awarded the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, a feat that he responded to with a speech about being turned away by a public library when he was 16, only to continue his quest to educate himself.

Since Trump’s accusations, sales of Lewis’ book have gone up, earning it several of the bestselling slots on Amazon.

If that’s not evidence enough of tangible influence, maybe this is: Today, March: Book Three received another award, one that will put the graphic novel in the hands of young readers. Ron Charles reported for The Washington Post that the book was given the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature, awarded by We Need Diverse Books. As a result, 2,000 copies will be donated to “U.S. schools with limited budgets.”

Lewis told Charles: “It is my hope that [the award] will inspire more people to read and to use their pen to inspire another generation to speak up and speak out.”

Talk, action, results: Lewis gracefully demonstrates how the three can be interwoven.

These Honest ‘Parenting Support’ Cards Say What Parents Really Need To Hear

There are greeting cards that congratulate new parents and parents-to-be on their growing families. So it makes sense that there should also be cards that acknowledge breast pumping, sleep deprivation and the other trials of raising children.

This week, greeting card designer Emily McDowell launched a new line of “Parenting Support” cards. The line features cards with messages like “You’re not a monster. Parenting is really hard” and “Hang in there, you’re doing great.”

”Parenting is really hard, and yet it’s frowned upon to publicly admit anything about it that could be perceived as negative, because of the fear that we’ll be judged as not loving our children enough, or pegged as a ‘bad mom,’” McDowell told The Huffington Post

“There’s a well-worn set of cultural expectations about how parents are supposed to feel about the experience of parenting, and women in particular get hammered with it, both from other people and within ourselves,” she added. “When reality doesn’t live up to those expectations, we end up with tremendous guilt and shame, and secretly concluding that ‘there must be something wrong with me’ ― which of course isn’t true.”

McDowell is a stepparent to an 11-year-old boy and also has two very young godsons. She told HuffPost her godsons’ mother has been her best friend for 25 years and served as “unofficial consultant” for her “Parenting Support” cards.

The designer said she wants her cards to have an impact on people in the throes of parenting.

“I hope parents who receive these cards (or even see them!) can feel a sense of relief and reassurance that they’re not failing, they’re not alone, and it’s totally normal and OK to both love your kid and have complicated feelings about being a mom or dad,” McDowell explained.

”Someone commented on my Instagram last week that she’d bought herself a whole set of our Empathy Cards (for serious illness and loss), not to send out, but to keep and look at when she wanted to feel understood,” she added. “I hope these can serve a similar purpose for parents.”

McDowell has three “Parenting Support” cards available on her website and is currently in the process of creating more. The next batch will focus on the way your relationship with your partner changes after having kids, issues of identity struggles and finding humor in parenting situations, from caring for infants to raising teenagers.

Said McDowell, “This is a hugely broad topic, and I’m really looking forward to finding different ways to look at it.”

Four Things You Need to Stop Putting Off

What are the things you should do before it is too late? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Nicolas Cole, Author & Entrepreneur, on Quora:

Here are four things you should do before it’s too late.

Create That Project

Whatever project you want to create, create it now. Because the part of you that wants to create it right now will not last forever. The book you write at 25 will be very different than the book you write at 30, and 35, and 40, and so on. As we change, our perspectives and feelings change as well. Create what you want to create right now, and capture this moment in time.

Love That Person

Do you connect with someone? Do you like someone? Even if you know, you won’t marry this person, or spend the rest of your life with this person, let yourself love them. Ride that wave together. You never know where that wave will take you–who knows, maybe you will end up together after all. But trust how you feel right now because that feeling won’t last forever, and the opportunity will be gone as fast as it presented itself.

Take That Leap

Is right now a unique time in your life? Do you have the chance to do something special–if you take the leap? What happens if you don’t take the leap? When will you ever get this chance again? Opportunities present themselves at the right times. They are never perfect–an opportunity is called an opportunity because it asks you to take a risk yourself.

Work That Skill

Guess what? If you don’t work whatever it is you want to get better at today, then you won’t be any better at it tomorrow. And if you continue to make the decision not to get better today, then tomorrow will never come. And before you know it, that skill either will no longer interest you, or you will not be able to (physically, mentally, etc.) learn that skill’s foundation. Learn it now.

Why Does The World Need Artists?

Art exists as way to know ourselves.
Sometimes we feel alone, trapped in our own minds.

There is a need in all human beings to ease this loneliness by creating bonds with other people, by sharing our life experiences and beliefs.
One of the ways in which we do this is through the performing arts.

We have to realize that, despite physical appearances, we are all -fundamentally the same in our desires to be loved, understood and accepted. That is why art transcends all race, gender, language, religion and culture. Through art, we share our fears, our desires, our needs, our hopes, our perversions, our fantasies and lust.

When we watch a film, see a play or listen to a singer that resonates in our soul, we feel as though someone understands us. Compassion and a deeper understanding of others can heal the world. This, in my opinion, is the greatest gift we can give each other.

Compassion and Understanding.

If you can bring a character to life, that could inspire others to feel less afraid and help them reconnect to the world, then this is what you MUST do! To hold back would be a tragedy.

The performing arts are a living tradition, a legacy that must be guarded and maintained with absolute ferocity. I am so grateful that I’ve been given the gift to be an artist. I feel fortunate to be in this industry.

If you’ve been given the gift to be an artist, consider yourself lucky!
Art has the power to transform, illuminate, educate, inspire and motivate.

Be the Artist, and make your soul visible to the world.

Dorothea Lange’s Photos Of Imprisoned Japanese-Americans Need To Be Seen

Photographer Dorothea Lange, well-known as a documenter of the Great Depression for the Farm Security Administration, captured the plight of poverty-stricken Americans with empathy, respect, and unflinching honesty. Her most famous work, “Migrant Mother,” reflecting the desperation and resilience of a mother working as a pea-picker, has become the defining image of that grim era in U.S. history.

She is lesser recognized, however, for her work chronicling the prison camps in California, as well as Washington, Oregon, and Arizona, where people of Japanese ancestry were incarcerated between 1942 and 1946 ― reportedly because the works were quietly censored by military commanders who reviewed and disapproved of the work.

Directly following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, American military police began the systematic imprisonment of Japanese-Americans. A chilling FBI report from the time reads: “It is said, and no doubt with considerable truth, that every Japanese in the United States who can read and write is a member of the Japanese intelligence system.”

In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, which, according to PBS, “permitted the military to circumvent the constitutional safeguards of American citizens in the name of national defense,” calling for the evacuation and imprisonment of Japanese-Americans.

Over 120,000 persons of Japanese descent, many of them children, were required by the military to evacuate their homes and businesses and relocate to prison camps, where they lived surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards for up to four years. Some, however, died in the camps due to lack of medical care, emotional stress, or were killed by military guards. Over two-thirds of those incarcerated were American citizens.

Lange, renowned for her work for the FSA, was recruited to create a photographic record of the “evacuation and relocation” processes by The War Relocation Authority. Despite, or perhaps because of, Lange’s moral objection to the prison camps, she obliged. Lange visited cities around California, photographing Japanese-Americans packing up their belongings, being packed onto buses, and shuttling to ramshackle temporary housing facilities.

She made a visit to one of the nation’s largest camps, Manzanar, in the Southern California desert, where she documented without reservation the conditions under which people were forced to live. By the time the camps were decommissioned, Lange had taken over 800 photographs, images that objectively captured the humanity of their subjects and the brutality of their circumstances.

Some prisoners were supplied insufficient food and medical treatment, as well as substandard housing. Some, accused of resisting orders, were subjected to violence. Lange caught it all on camera.

When the War Relocation Authority surveyed the photos, Lange’s political perspective was obvious. They promptly seized the images and, for decades, kept them from widespread public viewing.

In 1946 the prison camps were decommissioned and detainees ― many of whom were impoverished, mentally ill, and elderly ― were released. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a Civil Liberties Act declaring that the decision to incarcerate Japanese-Americans was spurred by “racial prejudice, wartime hysteria and a lack of political leadership,” formally apologizing to all living survivors.

Lange’s photographs, both powerful works of documentary photography and searing reminders of our nation’s grave historical abuses, have been making the rounds online recently. The photographs have become disturbingly foreboding in the wake of retired Navy SEAL Carl Higbie’s comments citing the wartime incarceration of Japanese-Americans as “precedent” for creating a federal registry for immigrants from Muslim countries.

Furthermore, President-elect Donald Trump himself has stated that, had he been alive during World War II, he might have supported the imprisonment of Japanese-Americans. “I would have had to be there at the time to tell you, to give you a proper answer,” he said.

As the country fearfully awaits what will become of the nation under a Trump presidency, Lange’s photos serve as a crucial reminder of what is possible when fear clouds judgment and hate obstructs human empathy. In the words of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: “Now is not the time to tiptoe around historical references … It is the astute response of those who know that history gives both context and warning.”

We’ve compiled some of Lange’s searing photos, drawn from the archives of the Library of Congress, here. Historical blogger Tim Chambers, who shared Lange’s work on his blog Anchor Editions, is currently selling Lange’s prints for $ 50, with half of all proceeds benefitting the ACLU, an organization that fought relentlessly against the unjust incarcerations and remains just as important today.

Do You Need a Coach or Therapist?

Coaches and therapists often overlap in what they offer clients. Understanding how they differ and articulating what you need can help you decide if coaching or therapy is better for you.

2016-11-30-1480540718-4221862-omega_institute_life_coaching_therapy.jpg

There are times in life when you need something more than the support of friends and family. Perhaps you want help to break a habit or meet a goal. Or maybe you want to examine and resolve deeply personal issues with someone who will listen to you without judgment.

Whatever your motivation, it can help to talk to a professional. A UCLA study showed that when you verbalize your feelings, it makes them less intense. But who should you talk to? Would a life coach or a therapist be more appropriate?

Coaches are useful for people looking to reach a specific goal or break a habit, often in a particular area, like health or career. Therapists generally address long-term emotional issues or problems, like trauma, addiction, anxiety, and depression. But these are generalities, and often a therapist may act as a coach and a coach may offer therapeutic support. The best thing you can do is get clear on your needs and goals and then do the research to find the right coach or therapist for you.

Do You Need to Climb Out of a Hole or Climb a Mountain?
The Differences Between Therapy & Coaching

In the book Coaching for Transformation, coaching is defined as “a partnership that maximizes human potential.” Coaches focus on “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential,” according to the International Coach Federation (ICF), the oldest and largest professional coaching organization. This description also fits for most therapists, too.

The American Psychological Association defines a therapist as someone who “provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who is objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental.” Which is also true of most coaches.

Richard Michaels, a Gestalt therapist and a life and executive coach, says that while both modalities “work to increase awareness: self-awareness, self-understanding, and emotional awareness…. The role of the client is more active [in coaching]. In therapy, you have more interpretation of what’s going on and more focus on your family of origin.” He describes many of his clients as high-functioning individuals who are ready to go deeper in some part of their life.

Madhu Maron, a human resources professional who now works as a life coach, says, “The [coaching] client is really longing for a change–[they have] a persistent deep, important longing,” she says. “It’s something like, I want to be healthier, get a new job, or have a better relationship. They can be very effective in certain parts of their lives, but not effective in this one area.”

Therapist and life coach Lisa Marie Bobby explains the difference this way: if you are dealing with depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, emotional issues, or other problems that leave you feeling trapped in a hole, a therapist is probably the best person to help you climb out of it. Once you’re out of the hole and on level ground, a coach can help you climb whatever mountain you wish to climb, usually in an effort to improve your circumstances or have greater success in areas like career, relationships, or health.

Vetting a Coach or Therapist
Do Your Homework & Get Surprisingly Fast Results

Once you’ve identified if you need help getting out of the hole or are ready to climb a mountain, you’ll probably want to do some research and interview potential therapists and coaches to find someone who offers what you need. There are a wide range of therapies and coaching practices–being an informed client and asking questions up front to find the best match will save you a lot of time and money.

There are hundreds of styles of therapy, so if you don’t have the time or inclination to explore the options, you might begin with an online directory to find therapists near you or ask friends for recommendations.

Therapists refer to themselves in many different ways. To be a psychologist, psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, or social worker requires an advanced degree, and these titles are regulated. If someone is calling themselves by one of these titles, you know they have received at least a master’s degree and passed licensing requirements.

The titles “therapist,” “counselor,” and “psychotherapist” are not regulated and don’t require a license. This doesn’t mean all therapists are unlicensed; many of them are. It just means anyone can call themselves a therapist, so you may need to investigate someone’s credentials if they’re billing themselves as one.

Life coaches are not required to have any training. Many coaches complete training programs, and groups like the International Coaching Federation are working to standardize credentials in the field, but currently anyone can call themselves a coach.

To find a coach, begin with an online search for coaches who focus on the area you want to address. Ask friends and colleagues for recommendations. Most coaches (and many therapists) work remotely with clients via phone or Skype, so location is not necessarily an issue.

Whether you decide on therapy or coaching, results often come relatively quickly. One study found that most people feel better with about 10 therapy sessions, while another said that 88 percent of therapy participants reported improvements after one visit. So while it may take you some time to find the right coach or therapist, once you do you’re likely to notice changes fast.

Gain the skills, knowledge, and inspiration you need to become a professional coach with this 10-month certification program.
