Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals Why She and Will Never Got Divorced in Red Table Talk Clip

Jada Pinkett Smith is opening up about why she and husband Will Smith never got divorced.

In a new clip, the 47-year-old actress welcomes her husband, 50, to her Facebook Watch show Red Table Talk and the two get very candid about their relationship.

Filled with laughs and eye-opening revelations, the couple — along with their 17-year-old daughter Willow and Pinkett Smith’s mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, — address some of the rumors they’ve faced in their 20-year marriage.

“I’ve been watching people crying and breaking down,” Smith says in the clip as he prepares to sit down at the red table. “You’re not breaking me today, Jada!”

Pinkett Smith teases him saying, “I’ve broken you enough.”

The premiere episode tackles topics about the couple that fans have been dying to know, Smith says, “All right, so hold on, let’s clear some rumors. Scientologist, swinger. Just historical rumors.”

Talking about their relationship, Pinkett Smith says, “I had to gain my strength as Jada. Not mommy. Not wife. Jada.”

While Smith admits, “deep down inside I was an insecure little boy that wanted Jada to say I was great.”

On the subject of why the two never called it quits, there was plenty of jokes thrown around.

“You know why I never got divorced?” Smith asks.

“It’s cheaper to keep me,” Pinkett Smith quips, causing Smith and Banfield-Jones to burst into laughter.

The season 1 continuation of the popular show will also feature the Suicide Squad actor opening up to his family about hardships in his life — particularly when he felt he was failing in his marriage.

“There was a period where mommy woke up and cried 45 days straight, I started keeping track,” Smith says to Willow, with Pinkett Smith replying that he “missed some days.”

Smith pressed on. “I think that’s the worst I’ve ever felt in our marriage. I was failing miserably.”

Red Table Talk returns to Facebook Watch on Oct. 22 with all new episodes featuring Smith, Ellen Pompeo and Leah Remini and will tackle topics such as mental health, forgiveness, divorce, race and domestic violence.

Victoria Beckham ‘Never Gave Up’ on Marriage to David ‘When Someone Else Might Have,’ Says Source

As Victoria and David Beckham approach their 19th anniversary, the couple is once again battling rumors of trouble in their marriage – and speaking out to squash the speculation.

“Over the years, Victoria has fought hard for her marriage, and for David,” a source tells PEOPLE. “She never gave up when someone else might have.”

After shooting down social media speculation about a divorce, the former model and designer, who shares four children with the soccer star, 43, spoke openly about how she balances her personal and professional life.

“I try really, really hard. I try hardest to be the best mother,” Victoria, 44, said at the Forbes Women’s Summit in New York City on Tuesday, according to Hello!.

“I am trying to be the best wife and the best professional. When I get home I try to put the phone down and spend time with the children and spend time with David,” she added.

“I have the support of an incredible husband,” Victoria continued. “We really are equal with everything we do at home with the children. When I’m away he’s the one doing the school run and doing the cooking.”

Her comments come just weeks after her and David’s rep told PEOPLE that the two were not heading for divorce.

“What nonsense. Journalist Chinese whispers and fake news fueled by social media,” the rep said. “There is no impending statement, no divorce!”

The power couple, who recently attended the royal wedding together, share children Brooklyn, 19, Romeo, 15, Cruz, 13 and daughter Harper, 6.

The duo met in the Manchester United players’ lounge in 1997. David was playing for the team at the time, but had not yet become one of the team’s most recognizable stars.

He has said he knew Victoria was ‘The One’ before even meeting her in person. While watching a Spice Girls music video on TV, Beckham proclaimed to a pal: “See the girl in the dark short dress? I’m going to marry her.”

The designer echoed her hubby’s statement: “Completely love at first sight. He told me he went home and wrote my number on so many other things in case he lost it.”

The duo married in a lavish 1999 wedding at an Irish castle, and despite often praising each other in interviews, they went on to endure speculation about the state of their union for nearly two decades.

“We’ve had our ups and downs,” she admitted to Vogue in 2013, adding, “but we’re so proud of each other.”

Two years later, the former Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer said she had effectively learned how to tune out the haters.

“I have never listened to, or commented on, the rumors about any aspect of my life,” she told Grazia magazine in regards to murmurs about a split.

“I am blessed to have a wonderful husband and beautiful, healthy, happy children,” she continued. “Yes, we travel a lot with our respective businesses and charitable commitments, but we always make time for each other as a couple and as a family. David and I have nothing to prove. We love each other, look out for each other and are strong as both partners and parents.”

She also spoke about how much she admires her husband. “My husband constantly inspires me and guides me – he has done so much good work,” she said of the man who serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. “I look up to him and have the utmost respect and admiration for all that he has achieved.”

In 2016, Victoria included some marriage advice in a letter addressed to her 18-year-old self published in British Vogue. “In marriage: have patience. Bite your tongue. Be supportive. And preserve a bit of mystique,” she said.

“Never let yourself go completely (at least brush your hair, clean your teeth, have a bit of a brow going on because you will always want him to look at you and feel attracted),” Victoria added.

Last year, the couple renewed their vows in a relatively private ceremony. In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, David opened up about the special day, while also admitting that “marriage is difficult at times” as he and his wife continue to work hard at their relationship.

“We have renewed our vows since ,” said David, who didn’t elaborate on when the ceremony took place. “It was a lot more private, about six people there in our house.”

The former soccer star said the secret to their 18-year marriage is making his relationship with Victoria a priority and working together through any hard times.

“We’re a strong family unit. We’ve got strong parents. We were brought up with the right values,” he said. “Of course you make mistakes over the years, and we all know marriage is difficult at times. It’s about working through it.”

He added, “We know each other better than anybody. People have talked about, ‘Do we stay together because it’s a brand?’ Of course not. We stay together because we love each other, because we have four amazing children.

“Do you go through tough times? Of course. That’s part of relationships. It’s part of marriages. It’s part of having children. It’s part of having responsibilities.”

Earlier this month, as rumors of a split began to circulate on social media, Victoria sent her “love” to David on Instagram with a photo of Harper.

“Morning cuddles x So much love 🙏🏻 We love and miss u @davidbeckham 💕💕💕💕,” she wrote in the caption.

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick ‘Have Never Been Better,’ Source Says

Is the drama between Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick finally over?

A source tells PEOPLE that the exes — who dated on and off for nine years before they split in 2015 and share three children together — are nothing but friendly.

“Kourtney and Scott have never been better!” the source says. “They’re both in happy relationships. They get on so well and co-parent so successfully.”

Kardashian turned 39 on Wednesday, a milestone she celebrated with a romantic night off the grid in an airstream with 34-year-old boyfriend Younes Bendjima, lunch with her three kids (sons Mason, 8, Reign, 3, and daughter Penelope, 5) in Malibu and an at-home dinner party with pals, momager Kris Jenner and sisters Kim Kardashian West and Kendall Jenner.

Disick, 34, has been seeing Sofia Richie, 19. They were first link when they were photographed cuddling aboard a yacht in Cannes in May 2017, and by September, the couple was inseparable.

In February, her famous dad, singer Lionel Richie, opened up about the surprising pairing.

“Is it going to be for life? I don’t know. But for right now it’s just a phase, and I’m going to stand real still in the corner, get me a good drink and not make too much noise,” he joked  an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

But Sofia has been spending time with Kardashian and Disick’s children, suggesting the romance really is serious.

“The initial reaction from Kourtney when she found out that Scott was dating Sofia was not positive,” an insider told PEOPLE in February. “Like most people, she thinks Sofia is way too young for him and doesn’t get it.”

Still, “he has very much shaped up in the past few months,” the insider said. “Kourtney is happy Scott is doing better.”

Tinsley Mortimer Debuts New Short Hairstyle After Previously Saying She’d Never Cut It

Tinsley Mortimer is trying something new with her hair.

On Saturday, the 42-year-old Real Housewives of New York City star announced that she had done something she previously said would never happen: she cut her hair.

“In honor of the new season of #RHONY…I chopped my hair!! 💇‍♀️🍎 Thanks Ludmilla @oscarblandisalon,” she wrote alongside a picture of her new, shortened ‘do.

Mortimer’s haircut comes as a big surprise for RHONY fans.

In an episode from season 9 of the series, fellow New York City Housewife Carole Radziwill suggested Mortimer chop her hair to help the public forget about Mortimer’s headline-making mugshot, which was taken when the former socialite was arrested in 2016 for trespassing at an ex-boyfriend’s home.

But the idea of changing her hair sent Mortimer into panic mode. “I would never. I’ve always had long hair. Stop. I’m like sweating right now, having a nervous breakdown!” she said.

“I don’t feel comfortable with it. The way that I wear my fake eyelashes and curl my hair, it’s because I feel comfortable that way. That’s me,” Mortimer added. “I’m not cutting my hair, Carole. It’s not happening.”

Persisting, Radziwill insisted that Mortimer needed to reinvent herself. “If I was coming back to New York having been the ‘It’ girl, I would totally reinvent myself. Cut my hair, put some low lights in it. You can’t have the same curls you had when you were 28 and date the same boys and live the same lifestyle. You have to reinvent yourself,” she said.

But Mortimer wasn’t budging. “I’m not changing my look,” she later told the audience during a confessional. “I’ve had enough change in my life, especially last year. I’m not changing it. I like my curls, I like my lashes, I like my party dresses, I like my blonde hair, I like my long hair. I’m not changing.”

RELATED: Real Housewives of New York City‘s Tinsley Mortimer on Moving On After Her Humiliating Arrest and Violent Relationship: ‘I Still Believe in Love’

But there is one thing about Mortimer’s hairstyle that likely won’t change — her hair color.

I haven’t seen my natural hair color in 20 years,” the reality star told The New York Times in 2017, crediting her stylist Kylie White for her trademark color, which he described to the newspaper as “multitonal — a soft baby blond with a golden blond base; she has icy and buttery pieces.”

“Being blond just makes me feel happier, like when the sun’s hitting you,” Mortimer added. “The blond pops. It’s cheerful.”

The Real Housewives of New York City’s 10th anniversary season premieres April 4 (9 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

You’ll Never Love Anything as Much as Katy Perry Loves Chicken Nuggets on This Japanese TV Show

Love is a strong word, but it’s the only appropriate way to describe Katy Perry‘s feelings for chicken nuggets. That probably explains why she housed tenders by the handful during a lighthearted appearance on Japanese television Thursday morning.

The 33-year-old “Swish Swish” singer was welcomed onto the program Sukkiri with an assortment of fried bites in a variety of flavors — including cheese and spicy — presented in chicken-themed cardboard containers.

According to Us Weekly, who first shared the clip that’s making the rounds among fans on social media, the nuggets are from Lawson, a Japanese convenience store chain.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Upon sight of the meaty morsels, Perry immediately went to town by jokingly sampling as many as she could. “I love them so much,” she mouths to the hosts between bites.

Unfortunately, disaster soon strikes when she can’t fit any more into her mouth, leading her to sheepishly spit some into one of the containers. The hosts, ever the professionals, shield their guest as she takes care of business.

Perry is in town for the Asian leg of her Witness tour, which kicked off on Tuesday. She had a very special supporter make the trip with her: on-again beau Orlando Bloom.

During the show, Perry told fans while introducing her song that she “felt very loved. And this next song is about being so loved and so seen that you never ever have felt this feeling before. This feeling of love.”

She added, “This is ‘For Me You See,’ for Bubba Doo,” apparently revealing her pet name for Bloom, whom fans spotted in the audience.

The nickname means, “One whom you adore, such as a (male) child or husband,” according to Urban Dictionary.

Want to keep up on the latest from PEOPLE? Sign up for our daily newsletter to get our best stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox.

Bloom, 41, made no attempts to hide that he was also in Japan, sharing a selfie with the country’s famous cherry blossoms to Instagram.

“cherry blossoms bloom ❤,” he captioned the photo, tagged in Tokyo.

On his Instagram story, the actor shared more videos from his trip, including a horse rolling around in the dirt and flags blowing in the wind.

Perry and Bloom sparked rumors of a reconciliation earlier this year by vacationing together in the Maldives, then sightseeing in Prague two months later.

Though the couple has yet to go public with their relationship status, a source recently told PEOPLE earlier this month that they are back together and taking it slow following their split in February 2017.

“After Orlando and Katy split, they stayed in touch. It wasn’t some awful split. They were just busy with their careers and it wasn’t working,” the source said.

Toddler Adorably Yells ‘Dad!’ in Court as Adoption Is Finalized: ‘He’s Never Leaving Us,’ Says Mom

For nearly two years, Mandi and Tyler Palmer, of Perrysburg, Ohio, dreamed of the day they could officially call little Hunter their son.

“Once we got licensed as foster-to-adopt parents, that week, we got the phone call for Hunter. He was 8 days old,” Mandi, 33, tells PEOPLE. “We went and picked him up at Children’s Services. We brought him home and we went through the roller coaster ride of foster care for that entire year.”

After facing a few setbacks, and the uncertainty of Hunter being taken in by another family, Mandi and Tyler, 31, learned last December that they’d finally be able to adopt Hunter. So, on Dec. 18, the family-to-be dressed their best and headed to a local courthouse, where they signed the official paperwork to adopt the 17 month old.

“It was very emotional, in a good way. We had all of our family and friends there,” Mandi says. “At the end of the court process, the judge announced new legal name. And they read the adoption decree and that’s when Hunter looked at my husband and he said, ‘Dad!’ ”

She adds: “He just started clapping and everybody just started crying. It was so emotional. It’s definitely rewarding. It’s nice to look in his eyes now and not have to worry that he’s ever gonna have to leave us again.”

Mandi and Tyler, who wed in 2014, had always dreamed of being parents. Due to complications from Mandi’s Crohn’s disease diagnosis, Mandi was not able to conceive.

“That’s when we started looking into other options and we were talking about adoption and we kept hearing our county’s commercial for the need of foster parents in our area,” Mandi tells PEOPLE.

“We were scared. We kind of danced around the idea for a little bit. Then we prayed on it, and we just felt like God pushed us to do it,” she adds.

She and Tyler have viewed Hunter as their son since the moment they met the sweet infant, and Mandi tells PEOPLE that she’s happy their family is finally complete.

Mom Creates Emotional Video for Infant Son She Placed for Adoption: ‘He’ll Always Know I Loved Him’

“On adoption day, it’s almost like a ton of bricks just came off our chest. We now know that he’s never leaving us,” Mandi says. “He’ll always be safe and loved with us. So that in itself is rewarding.”

She adds: “Life just happens. We’ve loved him since we’ve gotten him. We’ve cared for him as if he was gonna be with us forever, because every child deserves that.”

Mom of Carolina Panthers Employee Who Killed 2 Kids Says She ‘Has Never Shown Any Signs of Being Depressed’

The mother of a North Carolina woman and Carolina Panthers employee who killed her two kids and committed suicide by jumping from an interstate highway bridge on Saturday says she saw no red flags to suggest her daughter would be capable of such a crime.

“Our daughter has never shown any signs of being depressed,” said Patricia Treadway, the mother of Christina Treadway, 34, and grandmother to Christina’s two children, 7-year-old son Isaiah Miller and 3-year-old daughter Iliyah Miller, in brief comments to Charlotte TV station FOX 46 WJZY.

“I want people to know she is a loving mother and would not have done this if she wasn’t so trapped and so alone,” Patricia Treadway said.

In a post on a GoFundMe page created by Christina’s parents, Allen Treadway wrote: “I am her father and we are struggling to understand how something like this could have happened, they were all beautiful souls.”

Writing on his own GoFundMe page, where he supported the Treadways fundraising efforts on behalf of their daughter and grandchildren, the children’s father, Antoine Moore, said: “Just know these kids were treated very well and loved emensley by their mother and father.”

“Christina was a loving mother who loved those children dearly,” he added. “Please allow them to Rest In Peace and allow us time to mourn this horrible event without the negativity. No one will ever know what myself and both families involved are going through. Please keep us all in your prayers.”

Antoine’s father, Greg Moore, said his son and Christina had been in a relationship for about 10 years, and that his son was out with friends when he received a text from Christina saying “she was going to end it all.”

“My children’s mother decided to end her life,” Antoine Moore wrote on his GoFundMe page. “And end my two beautiful kids lives. I am beyond hurt and sad.”

He added: “You never know what a person is going through mentally. My kids were my everything I truly don’t know how my life will go on.”

Christina Treadway put her children’s singing and dancing talents on display in a series of YouTube videos that also featured Christina herself, going by the name Tina Lateena. She worked as a seasonal ticket-taker employed by the Carolina Panthers football team at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Authorities say that after Christina jumped from the bridge of Interstate 485, where she died at the scene, they learned information that directed them to her residence. Police forced their way inside to find the children alone and fatally injured. They later died at Carolina Medical Center.

• For more compelling true crime coverage, follow our Crime magazine on Flipboard.

Police have not shared a motive or revealed the type of the injuries suffered by the children.

Antoine Moore’s mother and the children’s paternal grandmother, Tina Moore, said that Christina “was a great mom. She was really, really a great girl.”

She added: “I love Tina to death, but she was just troubled. I don’t know what happened because she came and stayed at my house for the summer. I don’t know what happen, she just lost it.”

The maternal grandmother, Patricia Treadway, said of her daughter and grandchildren: “They were loved so very much in life and so very much in death.”

Kim Zolciak-Biermann Says She’ll Never Allow Her Estranged Mother Back Into Her Life

Kim Zolciak-Biermann hasn’t spoken to her mother Karen Zolciak in six years — and by the look of things, it appears the two won’t be reconciling anytime soon.

On Friday’s episode of Bravo’s Don’t Be Tardy, Kim let viewers know that her relationship with Karen was over. “My children, I will always be in their life,” the mother of six said. “But my mom? I will not let her back into my life, let’s just be clear.”

It’s not much of a surprise, considering the tense relationship the two women have had in the past. They last spoke at Kim and husband Kroy Biermann’s 2011 wedding, where Karen got into an explosive argument with Kroy when she was denied access to use a private restroom in their home.

Since then, Karen has only made things worse with Kim, 39 — shopping a tell-all book and suing her for grandparent’s visitation of older daughters Brielle, now 20, and Arianna, now 16.

“My mom and I have always butted heads. She’s kind of tormented me for many years,” Kim explained. “Marrying Kroy, you would think it would get easier but it’s actually only gotten worse. It’s one thing messing with Kroy and I, but when you’re messing with my children, it becomes a whole different ballgame for me.”

Karen had recently been making an effort to repair things, though — texting Kim, “Sorry to hear about Kash, call me sometime” after news broke about her son Kash’s terrifying dog bite.

That wasn’t enough for Kim. “My mom knows where I live. You could have sent a card,” she said.

“You can only do so much to a human being,” Kim also told Brielle. “I took it for 34 years until I finally said it’s not worth it to me. My mom, she was good in a lot of aspects. But when my mom told my husband on the day of our wedding to ‘f— off’ and she’s going to burn the f— house down? No”

Still, despite what had happened Brielle wanted to fix things, especially with her grandfather, Joe.

“I still miss him sometimes. He’s still family. He was part of my life for 14 to 15, years,” Brielle said. “They’re going to die one day. Maybe just be cool with each other. Not be friends, I don’t like having grudges and hating these people.”

The idea worked for Kim. “I would never call my mom back in a million years all that she’s done to me and my children. But I’m open to calling Poppy,” she said, using her father’s nickname.

When they called Joe, though, Karen answered the phone instead. And when asked by Brielle if she wanted to get together for dinner the next day, Karen said she couldn’t make it.

“It’s just not gonna work,” Karen said. “We’ve had plans on the calendar for weeks. We can’t just reschedule everything.”

That only upset Kim more. “I just know how I feel about my six kids and I would drop anything to meet them,” she told her mom. “I’ve given birth to children you’ve never met them, and I just don’t get it.”

“I’m floored. I will never understand her mentality. Never,” Kim said, tearing up after hanging up the phone. “I would never do this to . I’m not even sad over them, I just would never do this to . I can’t relate as a mom. I just can’t understand.”

She added, “In time you would think you would change. I would drop anything for my kids. Your family, your blood, is a game to you. That’s what bothers me.”

9 Superhero Shows You (Probably) Never Heard Of

Superhero fans of the 21st century have it easy. Not only are there great movies finally being made about our favorite costumed crimefighters, and a lot of them too, but there are also tons of rock solid live-action superhero TV shows. For many decades, a single, solitary superhero TV series as good as Daredevil, The Flash, Jessica Jones, Arrow, Luke Cage or even Legends of Tomorrow would have been hailed as a godsend.

Instead, we had… these. A series of most forgettable, mostly forgotten live-action superhero shows with dopey storylines, cheesy special effects and, in one case, a freakin’ invisible dinosaur as a villain. These were dark times. Click through the slideshow below for 9 live-action superhero shows that you, as a 21st century individual, have (probably) never heard of…

Dunkirk Vet, 97, Breaks Down in Tears After Watching Movie: ‘I Never Thought I Would See That Again’

A 97-year-old vet who survived the battle of Dunkirk spoke through tears after watching the premiere of the new Christopher Nolan movie.

Ken Sturdy, a native of Wales who currently lives in Calgary, Canada, donned a suit jacket adorned with medals when he headed to Calgary’s Westhills Cinemas on Friday to watch the World War II drama that he lived through nearly 80 years ago.

“I never thought I would see that again,” Sturdy told Canada’s Global News. “It was just like I was there again.”

The film tells the story of the historic battle that took place between Nazi Germany and the Allied forces. The nine-day battle saw the evacuation of British and Allied forces from the beaches of the namesake French town as the Nazis continued their advance on the opposing forces. In the end, 338,226 men escaped, but thousands also perished.

RELATED VIDEO: Why Did Prince Harry Attend the ‘Dunkirk’ Premiere?

Sturdy was just 20 when he worked with the Royal Navy to help stranded soldiers surrounded by the advancing German army.

“I was in those little boats picking them out of the water,” he told Global News. “I had the privilege of seeing that film tonight but I’m saddened by it because of what happened on that beach.”

Thousands of soldiers died or were captured during the battle, and Sturdy said the film took him back to those harrowing days.

“Watching the movie, I could see my old friends again and a lot of them died in the war,” Sturdy said. “I went on convoys after that in the North Atlantic. I had lost so many of my buddies.”

“Don’t just go to the movie for entertainment,” he continued, his eyes filling with tears. “Think about it. And when you become adults, keep thinking.

“Tonight I cried because it’s never the end,” he said. “It won’t happen. We the human species are so intelligent and we do such astonishing things. We can fly to the moon but we still do stupid things.”

What Celebrity Surrogacy Is Really Like from One Mom Who’s Been There: ‘It Was Never About Money’

As Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West consider a surrogate pregnancy, a woman who has been a surrogate says the journey to match any parent or parents with a woman who will carry a child and then give it up to them is filled with emotion on both sides.

“I hoped for everything I got,” two-time surrogate Dayna, 37, a stay-at-home Pennsylvania mom, tells PEOPLE, which is withholding her last name. “I didn’t want it to be a business transaction. I didn’t want it to feel like that.”

“It was never about money,” she says. “I wanted it to be personal. I wanted to get enjoyment like I did out of it. I was giving someone something that potentially they couldn’t get without someone like us.”

In April, Dayna delivered the second of two children that she carried for parents Jonathan Rollo and Joey Gonzalez, through a match overseen by the California-based agency Growing Generations. The couple welcomed a daughter, Francesca, now 18 months old, in December 2015; their son, Jake, is two months old. Both were conceived using anonymous donor eggs selected from a catalogue listing and then fertilized by the men and implanted in Dayna’s uterus.

“I personally didn’t feel any separation process,” Dayna says of the time after Francesca was born. “There was no grief, there was no mourning, there was no sadness. It was a pretty amazing feeling, just to see Jon’s and Joey’s faces when she was born, and them holding her for the first time. They were literally just glowing.”

17Kardashian West and her husband are already parents to 4-year-old daughter North and 18-month-old son Saint. But in planning for a third child, they recently hired a surrogate, PEOPLE confirms. Doctors had cautioned Kardashian West that another pregnancy would be risky because she suffers from a condition, placenta accreta, that causes the placenta to grow into the wall of the womb, thus making it hard to detach at the time of birth.

The 36-year-old reality star underwent a procedure to try and correct the condition. But she told her mother, Kris Jenner, on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, “I’ve come to the conclusion in my mind that I can’t carry another one. So now I want to explore surrogacy.”

Dayna, a mother of five children ages 7 to 20, decided to become a surrogate after a long consideration that involved her husband and their family; the couple welcomed two biological children and parented several foster children, adopting three, before choosing not to have any more.

But after seeing “so many people out there in need and just having that want and desire for their own biological children,” Dayna says she viewed surrogacy as her way to contribute further. “My pregnancies have always been easy,” she says. “After doing tons of research, it just felt right. It felt like something I wanted to do.”

Before going forward, she also allowed her kids a vote. “Is this going to be okay?” she asked. “This is not going to be your sibling at all. I’m just going to carry a baby for someone who can’t carry a baby.”

Their response? “They were all on board.”

A friend of hers had been a surrogate through Growing Generations, and Dayna reached out to the company, which does not advertise for surrogates but accepts online applications. Just 10 percent meet initial qualifications; only 1 or 2 percent of those advance for final consideration in a review that includes background checks, medical tests, and psychological evaluations. Among questions posed: Are you willing to work with single parents? Gay parents? Interracial couples?

“It was multiple applications,” says Dayna. “At that point, they pretty much interviewed you: Why do you want to become a surrogate? What do you hope to get out of it? Have you talked to your family about it? They do have a lot of requirements, which I feel are necessary.”

Founded in 1996, Growing Generations has overseen more than 1,500 births delivered via 1,200 surrogates, says Stuart Bell, the agency’s co-founder. Its client base is divided evenly between U.S. and international parents. Ninety percent of them are couples, and 60 percent of them are gay. (The agency is not working with Kardashian West.)

“Twenty years ago, infertility was such a cross to bear,” Bell told PEOPLE in 2015. “There was kind of this shame around ‘I can’t have a baby.’” Although surrogacy and surrogate contracts still generate legal and political debate in parts of the country, “they’re starting to understand that it’s not harming anyone involved,” Bell says. “This is something that’s building families in a positive way.”

It’s also costly. For a person or couple opting to use their own egg, Growing Generations tells them to budget $ 120,000 to $ 140,000 for the process; if a donor egg is used, the expense can climb to $ 150,000 to $ 200,000.

Costs include the egg donor fee of $ 15,000 to $ 16,000; the surrogate fee of around $ 35,000; the expense to create and implant embryos; allowances for the surrogate’s maternity clothing, travel and medical monitoring; and legal and insurance fees, all on top of the agency’s matching fees.

“When you say you’re going to be a surrogate, the first thing anybody asks is, how much money are you making?” says Dayna. Growing Generations ensures that surrogates are financially secure before taking on the responsibility, she adds. “The money is not worth what you’re putting your body through. You really need to be honest with yourself. This is something that you want to do for the right reasons.”

Once approved, Dayna received a packet with information about Gonzalez and Rollo — not detailed, but with photos, ages, how long they’d been together, and images showing them with family and friends.

Then she and her husband had a preliminary meeting over lunch with Gonzalez, the CEO of Barry’s Bootcamp, an international fitness boutique concept, and Rollo, a chef, owner and founder of Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop, a chain of organic restaurants.

“We wanted somebody who has been through childbirth,” Gonzalez told PEOPLE, which earlier profiled the couple and their surrogacy process. “Our preference was for someone who has been through it more than once, psychologically secure, who could go through this process of separating from a child. That’s obviously not an easy thing to do. We both wanted somebody incredibly maternal, somebody that we thought respected the process.”

“When they presented Dayna,” he says, “it was the best-case scenario. She’s the most maternal person I’ve ever met. She’s just an exceptionally sweet, loving person. You can tell that family is a huge priority for her.”

Twenty-four hours after that meeting, each side sent word to the other through the agency: They agreed it was a match.

The two men and Dayna kept in constant touch through that first pregnancy via texts, calls and occasional in-person visits. Gonzalez and Rollo always talked of having more than one child. As they gathered for the first induced delivery and drove with Dayna to the hospital, “We were actually talking about the second one already,” Dayna recalls with a laugh. “I remember Joey’s mom saying, ‘Can we just have this one first?’”

“I planned on the first time being only a one-and-done thing, but the relationship I had with the guys, I knew instantly I would never be a surrogate for multiple families,” she says. After three months of pumping breast milk for Francesca, then freezing and shipping it overnight to Gonzalez and Rollo in California, she allowed her body to rest for a few months before starting the process for the second child. The dads were present at both births.

Today, “ loves seeing pictures of our babies, as much as we love hearing stories about her kids,” Gonzalez writes in an email. “Even if weeks go by without hearing from her, it’s easy to pick up where we left off. Sharing something this deep bonds people for life.”

“Honestly, there is no way to have assurance the surrogate will do things your way,” he says. “Which is why the process is so important. Be honest with each other about what matters most, and have trust that she will honor and respect that.”

He adds: “Don’t stress out if the first few meetings are awkward — it’s not the most natural relationship on earth and takes time to develop.”

But even as she values that relationship, Dayna says she’s not decided whether to be a surrogate again.

“I’m not getting any younger,” she jokes. “This one just really took a lot out of me. And I’ve got to think about my own kids. We hike a lot, we camp a lot; it’s hard to do those things when you’re pregnant.”

She does know, however, she has lifelong friends in the men whose family she helped to grow.

“I think the more you’re involved, the more you know what’s going on with the pregnancy, the more you can relate,” she advises those who may be considering using a surrogate. “You hope there are check-in points that they’re interested in, like, ‘What was the baby’s heart rate at the doctor’s today?’ because that just builds the excitement.”

“They don’t have to keep in touch,” she says of the two sides of the transaction. “Once they have that child, that can potentially be the end of the relationship, and I don’t think a lot of people prepare themselves for that. You need to prepare.”

She heard all throughout her process about how awful things can be between parents and their surrogates. But she, Gonzalez and Rollo all praise their match.

“I’m told all the time that we have a special relationship,” she says. “So I’m thankful very much for that.”

“I got everything that I wanted, and possibly more, when I went into this. To see the pictures of the guys with Jake and Francesca, and them living their lives, and all their pictures that they share, it’s amazing,” she says. “I helped create that.”

Jessica Alba’s Names Her Mentor And You’ll Never Guess Who It Is

Jessica Alba might have earned her fame and fortune from starring in television shows and Hollywood films like Fantastic Four, but the actress-turned-entrepenuer is now all about her business The Honest Company. Founded in 2011, the billion dollar non-toxic goods empire provides customers with healthy, sustainable home cleaning, baby and beauty products.

As Alba continues to expand the fast-growing business and team up with big store chains like Target, one could only help to wonder where she found the ambition to step into the business industry. The 36-year-old actually took the leap into entrepreneurship with the inspiration of one person she calls her mentor: director James Cameron.

Because of Carmeron—who directed blockbusters like Titanic and Avatar—and his determination to film the wreck of the Titanic ship when there was no technology to do so, Alba felt that there was no reason she couldn’t do something out of her element. That’s when The Honest Company was born.

“The way James operated hit me hard. It opened my mind to the idea that it didn’t matter what had or hadn’t been done before, or how seemingly insurmountable the task,” she revealed. “If you really want something, you go after it. You create a new reality.”

She added, “James didn’t start off as an inventor or an engineer. But he found a way to fill the gaps where technology was lacking, resulting in groundbreaking advances in the film industry. I didn’t have a background in business. But I saw a need and felt compelled to act.”

Alba shared her game changing moment as part of a new career series on LinkedIn that features other celebrities like celebrities including Kumail NanjianiRachel Zoe and more.

Why Caroline Rhea Says She Will Never Host Another Reality Show After The Biggest Loser

Caroline Rhea learned one important lesson while hosting The Biggest Loser: Reality shows are not for her.

The actress says she was uncomfortable in her hosting gig during the first three seasons of the reality competition show that saw contestants try to lose large amounts of weight for money.

“ that I don’t want to be the host of a reality show,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “I am not the kind of person who wants to tell somebody they’re eliminated. Ever. Ever.”

For more from Caroline Rhea, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday

Rhea, 53, says she was not a fan of the competitive and often cutthroat atmosphere the show promoted.

The Sabrina the Teenage Witch alum says she struggled each week when it came time to announce who was going home — even going as far as to purposely delay having to make the announcement.

This Gay Singer’s Sexy Video Aims To Show Fantasies ‘Can Never Be Wrong’

Model-turned-songstress Keeana Kee got a head start on summer with the steamy video for her debut single, “Coconut Rum and Coke,” and HuffPost has an exclusive first look.

In the clip, which can be viewed above, Latvian-born Kee canoodles up to a love interest on a sun-drenched beach and around a bonfire. The lyrics of the reggae-inspired tune include a number of tongue-and-cheek nods to the tropics, too. “If I could, I would drink you all night long, like coconut rum and coke,” Kee sings. “`I want to make your palm trees boom.”

The song also features a rap by Latin pop icon and producer Maffio, who has collaborated with the likes of Maroon 5, Elvis Crespo and Pitbull.

The Los Angeles-based singer, who is openly gay, told HuffPost that her video was inspired in part by homophobia she experienced during her years in the fashion industry. “I went through some discrimination in my life working as a fashion model, so I really hope to make a difference by encouraging people to be themselves no matter what, and to stand up for themselves, even if it seems impossible,” she said.

Citing Sia and Beyoncé as influences, Kee said she had no qualms about featuring a same-sex love interest in her debut video. “I’m very confident with my sexuality, so I was comfortable to be myself in the video,” she said. “I want to show the world that there is nothing wrong with being gay.”

Still, she hopes audiences will see her “Coconut Rum and Coke” as “romantic, sexy and slightly cheeky” rather than anything overtly political. “I hope that this video reminds people that they can go wild in their fantasies,” she said, “and it can never be wrong!”

These 103- And 98-Year-Old Sisters Prove Sibling Rivalries Never End

If you thought sibling rivalries mellowed out with time, you’ve never met Gramma and Ginga

In a YouTube clip that’s going viral on Facebook (watch it below,) Gramma, 103, attempts to give her granddaughter, Sheila Liljenquist, directions to D&P Hot Dogs in her hometown of Clarksburg, West Virginia.

The only problem? Gramma’s 98-year-old sister Ginga is seated directly behind her and she’s quite the backseat driver.

“Your grandmother doesn’t know where in the hell she’s going,” Ginga offers from her corner.

“No, with your damn big mouth. Dammit. Shut your mouth, will you?” Gramma responds.

Luckily, the older and younger sisters ― whose full names are Arlene Cody Bashnett and Genevieve Musci ― eventually navigate Sheila to the hot dog spot.

The sisters ― who appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last year and have quite the following on YouTube ― are quick to bicker but rarely stay mad, according to Liljenquist.

“The gals argue about everything ― how fast or slowly one of them eats, how to get to the hot dog place or where to buy the best olives ― but they’re also quick to laugh about the whole thing,” she told HuffPost. “They’ve never stayed angry for more than a minute.”

Their current heated competition? Walking.

“They now argue about who could walk the best at age 98,” Liljenquist said. “Gramma thinks she was in better shape when she was at 98 than Ginga is now!”

It’s a well-documented style rule that men should never button the second button of a two-button suit jacket. It’s considered appropriate to button the top one when standing, sure, but never the second.

So if no one’s supposed to use the bottom button, why does it exist?

As with many fashion curiosities, history reportedly factors in. Legend goes that Britain’s Edward VII ― a king with several famous appetites ― grew too large for his suit and had to stop using the second button as a result. Not wanting to embarrass him, others followed. The tradition stuck.

Other theories include dandies who wanted to show off multiple layers of clothing, the comfort of horse-riding in a suit, and the favored style of an exclusive club at Eton. But GQ’s UK fashion director Robert Johnson said he favors the Edwardian theory, correctly pointing out “there is nothing so weird as court etiquette.”

Nowadays, men’s suit jackets typically have two or three buttons, though some are made with one. The “sometimes, always, never” rule for three-button jackets states that you should sometimes button the top button, always button the middle one and never use the last button. On a two-button jacket, you should always use to the top button and never use the second.

Whether Edward VII was the true inspiration for this or simply makes for a convenient tale, modern suits are now tailored to fit with the last button unbuttoned ― using it makes them both look and feel too tight.

“It induces a tension in the jacket that feels restrictive,” Clive Dilnot, a professor of Design Studies at The New School, told HuffPost.

Many men choose to leave their buttons undone altogether, Dilnot added. In the official style playbook, it’s acceptable to undo all the buttons before sitting to avoid pulling and tugging the fabric, according to menswear site Black Lapel.

Ahh, sweet release. Thanks, King Ed!

Father Stunned by Son’s Arrest in Murder of Queens Jogger: ‘He’s Never Had a Fight in His 20 years’

The father of Chanel Lewis, the 20-year-old man who was arrested this weekend for the August 2016 murder of Queens, New York, jogger Karina Vetrano, told reporters that he was “extremely surprised” by the charges.

According to the New York Post, Richard Lewis, a 70-year-old former school principal, called his son a good student and “a very humble kid” when he met with reporters on Sunday.

“Chanel would never have gone to do what they say he has done,” the father said. “He’s never had a fight in his 20 years.”

In fact, Richard said his son, who lived with his mother and siblings in East New York, was previously the victim of crimes. He said Chanel was hospitalized last year after being mugged and hit in the head with a piece of wood by three people. Chanel was later mugged again by the assailants.

The dad said he would tell Vetrano’s family, “I’m sorry to hear about , but I’m sure that would not be a part of that.”

Vetrano’s parents, Phil and Cathy Vetrano, expressed mixed feelings to reporters outside their home.

“I’m not going to say it is a good day but we can move forward now,” Phil said after praising police for their investigative work, according to the New York Daily News. “We know who did this.”

“The demon must get his justice,” Cathy said. “We will see to it.”

At an NYPD press conference on Sunday, police said that they do not believe that Lewis knew Vetrano prior to her disappearance. They said he had no prior criminal history aside from some summonses. According to police, Lewis gave a DNA swab to authorities after an interview on Feb. 2. His DNA allegedly matched with DNA found on Vetrano. He has been booked on murder and sexual assault charges, according to police. It is not known how he pleads against the charges or if he has retained an attorney.

On Sunday he was seen leaving a police station in handcuffs while reporters and bystanders shouted at him. In a video from AM New York, Lewis looked around while he was led to a cop car, appearing stunned and confused, as people could be heard yelling “why’d you kill her?”

After six-month long search, the arrest took place Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn, New York, according to the New York Daily News.

Vetrano’s body was found in Spring Creek Park around 11 p.m. on Aug. 2, about a dozen feet from a jogging trail she used daily, according to police.

The 30-year-old was sexually assaulted and strangled after putting up a “ferocious fight,” investigators previously revealed. They further believe Vetrano bit her attacker, because her teeth showed signs of cracking and found DNA under her fingernails.

Teen Plans To Tell The Immigrant Stories Trump’s Administration Never Would

When Valeria Alvarado learned that President Donald Trump had called for a weekly list of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants, she took action.

The 19-year-old Villanova University student decided to create an organization that would fight Trump’s actions by highlighting positive immigrant stories. Alvarado recently started the Facebook page “We, Too, Are America,” a name she acknowledges has also been used by other pro-immigrant movements on Twitter and to celebrate Black History Month.

“When I read [Trump’s executive] order, I knew it would unfairly define a community of over 11 million people by the actions of a few,” Alvarado told The Huffington Post on Thursday. “Being close to the community, I decided to do a counter-list where we would publish a weekly list of accomplishments by the undocumented community.”

The positive response she received over the initial idea prompted her to open up the platform to not only include stories about undocumented immigrants but also feature achievements by refugees and the immigrant community as a whole. The student says these groups are also negatively affected by Trump’s recent directives.

Alvarado is an immigrant herself; she moved from Monterrey, Mexico to the United States at the age 4. The teen is currently spending a semester abroad in Rwanda studying post-genocide restoration.

“I could not believe my eyes when I first read Trump’s plan to publish this list,” Alvardo told Remezcla in a recent interview. “This ‘crime list’ idea is not new. The Nazis used to publish a list of Jewish crimes before the genocide started. The RTML radio in Rwanda used to convince people that Tutsis were to blame for the crimes of the few. I am not trying to homogenize these situations with each other, but it is unbelievable that we are repeating history’s same mistakes.”

Alvarado, who is a U.S. citizen, recognizes that not all immigrants have the opportunity to become legal.

“I was lucky enough to become a citizen in 2013,” she told HuffPost. “I use the word ‘luck’ because I believe the citizenship process requires more than just hard work, it requires luck. There are so many in our community still stuck in the process, after years and years of working hard towards becoming a citizen.”

The “We, Too, Are America” Facebook page has accrued more than 1,000 followers in its first six days. Alvarado and her small team plan to publish their first weekly list of immigrant stories on Monday, Feb. 6.

“We, Too, Are America wants to publish stories from all walks of life and all professions,” she said. “Our goal is not to build the ‘model minority’ image, but instead, counter a false image with a positive and more diverse image of our community.”

The 2016 election was the first time Alvarado had the opportunity to vote for a presidential candidate, a privilege she took seriously. While the outcome was not what she expected, she intends to keep fighting for her ideals.

“Voting for the first time was a bittersweet moment,” she told HuffPost. “I was happy I was able to go in the voting booth to exercise my rights. I also had to think about the privilege I have as a citizen; our undocumented friends and family did not have an opportunity to vote in an election that would alter their lives. The three million more Americans and I that won the popular vote are disappointed in the outcome, pero como siempre me ha dicho mi papa: ‘es tiempo para ponerte las pilas’ (which translates to, ‘but like my dad always told me: ‘it’s time to get to work’’). A Trump presidency will not bring us down. We will not stand by silently.”

The One Thing You’ve Probably Never Noticed About Prince William

Though you’ve probably seen a million pictures of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, you might’ve missed one important thing missing from the future king of England’s left hand: his wedding ring.

While Kate wears a gorgeous sapphire and diamond engagement ring with a Welsh gold wedding band, Prince William doesn’t wear one. As pointed out by Business Insider, the Prince didn’t receive one during his 2011 wedding to the Duchess, according to the royal wedding’s official program.

His aversion to rings was attributed to personal preference, but it’s actually quite common for the British upper class to skip the relatively new custom.

“It is not unusual at all for men from the upper sets in Britain to shun wearing a wedding band,” etiquette expert William Hanson told Harper’s Bazaar. “This is not because of any intentions that they may wish to play away from home once married, but because it was traditionally not the done thing for gentlemen to wear jewellery. Years ago, this even included watches, but even hardened snobs have relaxed on that front.”

Scroll though below to check out more photos of Prince William’s jewelry-free hands:

You Should Never Wear Thumb Rings. It’s A Juju Thing.

In his book “Mystic’s Musings“, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev has warned women to never wear any metal rings on their thumbs as it “will lead to attracting occult forms”.

Sadhguru, a name which means uneducated guru, is an Enlightened Yogi, Mystic, Humanitarian, New York Times Bestselling Author, and more than likely a genius.

So as much as I am a long term fan of fashion guru and thumb ring advocate, Rachel Zoe, (I love receiving her quarterly Box of Style and fashion advice via The Zoe Report) I am going to have to draw the line here.

Rachel is even quoted as saying “why are you asking me if I’ve read a book“. I’ve read the book, Rachel, it’s now up to you to stop just accessorising with gay abandon and enlighten your fashion followers!

Sadhguru and Rachel Zoe both share an affinity for snake jewelry. Spiritual seekers and Isha meditators can buy copper snake rings from Isha Shoppe USA to be worn only on the ring finger. Rachel Zoe has always adorned snake jewelry and encourages followers to stack, mix metals and wear snake rings on their thumbs on her website. Let’s see if she is boho enough to swap her over the top 6 carat bezel cut diamond wedding ring for a hand crafted consecrated copper snake ring which can be purchased for only US$ 8. Playing “Never Have I Ever” is all fun and games until you decide to play it with your parents. Then, it’s bound to get a little awkward.

In the BuzzFeed video above, brave parents and their grown children put each other on the spot, answering questions about drug use, skinny dipping and porn.

Let’s just say they learn a lot about each other by the end of the game.

“Everybody has!” the moms says.

“Yeah, but it’s still weird when it’s your mom.”

‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ Almost Never Made It To Television

In 1965, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” debuted on CBS, with over 15 million people tuning in for the first showing. Over the next five decades, millions more watched the story of a few, still mostly hairless, kids who go on a quest to find the true meaning of celebrating Christmas.

Although the multigenerational resonance of this television special now seems fated, the fact that “A Charlie Brown Christmas” even made it on TV was actually so serendipitous that it’s almost easy to believe some divine, jolly red-suited figure intervened to guide its path.

The Huffington Post spoke on the phone with producer Lee Mendelson about how CBS execs, animator Bill Melendez, and Mendelson himself thought the final product was a disaster before it aired.

“When it was all finished, we thought we’d ruined Charlie Brown,” said Mendelson, who now ― comfortably sitting atop half a century of “Charlie Brown” success, acclaim and syndication money ― can talk openly about the time he thought he’d irrevocably tank cartoonist Charles Schulz’s franchise.

This special was the very first time Schulz had allowed an animator — in this case, Melendez — and producer to try to turn the Charlie Brown–centered “Peanuts” comic strip into a video feature. The stakes were high to not destroy Schulz’s successfully syndicated comic about a kid who couldn’t kick a football or learn to switch up his wardrobe from a yellow and black shirt.

In the alternate timeline where “A Charlie Brown Christmas” actually was a flop, the Halloween and Thanksgiving specials certainly would’ve never been made.

“If you go back and look over the years, very, very few comic strips ever went beyond one network special,” said Mendelson, explaining the concern this apparent disaster of a special could cause for the brand. “They’d get one shot and be gone.”

Adding to Mendelson’s guilt at the time was that he was the one who roped Schulz into the deal with advertising group McCann Erickson to create this special, which Coca-Cola would sponsor.

(As an aside, Schulz, Melendez and Mendelson were fully aware that it was strange their movie was championing anti-commercialism, while a corporate giant made that movie possible. “The whole thing was a paradox,” said Mendelson. “It was all kind of mixed together and we all went marching forward realizing the paradox involved, as did Coca-Cola.”)

Mendelson had first become friends with Schulz after he cold-called the cartoonist to pitch making a documentary about him. Both of them happened to live in the San Francisco area, and the producer simply found Schulz’s number listed in the phone book. The two bonded over a love for baseball, in particular San Francisco Giants star Willie Mays, who was the subject of another of Mendelson’s documentaries.

Nobody ended up buying the film Mendelson made about Schulz, but their known relationship caused McCann to give Mendelson a call to see whether Schulz had any interest in making a Christmas special.

“I frankly just lied and said, ‘Oh, yes, we’ve talked about it quite a bit,’” said Mendelson. McCann wanted an outline for Coca-Cola by the next week, which Mendelson promised he could give them ― based on nothing.

“I hung up the phone, stared at the phone for a few minutes, then I picked it up and called Mr. Schulz and I said, ‘I think I just sold “A Charlie Brown Christmas,”’” explained Mendelson. “And he said, ‘What in the world is that?’ And I said, ‘It’s something you’re going to write tomorrow.’ And again, there was another 10-second pause and he said, ‘OK, come on up, we can do it.’”

They called up Melendez and the three made the outline for the special in just one day. “The final show that came out was just about the same show we outlined that first day, never really changed it at all,” said Mendelson.

The final major component of the movie was filled in an equally happenstance way, as Mendelson heard a song by San Francisco musician Vince Guaraldi in a cab. He hired the local for the project.

“It was just one of those surreal things that comes together,” said Mendelson. “Like Vince Guaraldi ― where does he live? ― he lives in San Francisco. What’re the odds of that happening? I don’t know if you call that fate or serendipity or what, but why we all ended up in San Francisco, I will never know.”

But if, in retrospect, the combination of these people seems like destiny, at the time it certainly felt like a mess.

Mendelson and Melendez both thought that the special was too slow and that the inclusion of religion would not go over well.

“When [Schulz] said, ‘You know, we’re going to have Linus read from the Bible,’ Bill and I looked at each other and said, ‘Uh oh, that doesn’t sound very good,’” said Mendelson. “But then Schulz said, ‘Look, if we’re going to do this, we should talk about what Christmas is all about, not just do a cartoon with no particular point of view.’”

Schulz also vehemently opposed Mendelson’s suggestion that there be a laugh track, given this was a cartoon.

The execs at CBS ended up having the same thoughts as Mendelson and Melendez, while also believing the music was a bad fit. But Schulz’s team turned in the finished work just a bit over a week before the scheduled airdate, and so changes weren’t an option.

“[The CBS execs] thought the kids were using big words,” said Mendelson. “They didn’t get the jazz music, and so they said, ‘Well, we’ll put it on the air, not much we can do about it. It’s in TV Guide, we’ll put it on, it’s not going to hurt anything.’”

It may seem strange that Schulz agreed to risk the longevity of his career to make such a unique special that went against the conventional wisdom of the time, but Mendelson explained it was a move in line with Schulz’s nature.

“He was very competitive always ― in sports, or being the best comic strip or whatever,” said Mendelson. “So looking back, I can see where he would say, ‘Come on, we can do it.’ He was very confident in it, but he took an enormous risk.”

Just like Charlie Brown fought for his authentic Christmas tree, or just like Schulz fought for his vision, sometimes you’ve got to believe you’re the one with the right idea in a room full of doubters.

“Charlie Brown endures bullying and keeps fighting back ― [this message] is so important today,” concluded Mendelson. “Over the past 50 years, I’ve heard from so many different minority groups that identify with Charlie Brown and his struggle. His struggle is like their struggle. If there’s any way that Charlie Brown’s success can wave the flag for the bullied, then I think that’s a good thing.”

As all the characters yell at the end of the special, “Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown.”

Meghan Markle ‘Never Planned’ on Attending Suits Costar Patrick J. Adams’ Wedding

Meghan Markle is currently in one of the most high-profile romances in the world, but that’s not why she didn’t attend her onscreen fiancé Patrick J. Adams and Troian Bellisario’s wedding.

“She never planned on attending the wedding,” says a source, who adds that reports Markle — who has been dating Prince Harry for several months — turned down an invite because she didn’t want to overshadow the bride and groom are untrue.

The actress, 35, was recently visited by her boyfriend in Canada, and on Adams’ wedding day, she was spotted braving the cold to head to a yoga class in Toronto.

Adams and Bellisario wed in a bohemian outdoor ceremony in front of 200 guests in southern California, where their Suits and Pretty Little Liars costars — including Sarah Rafferty, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale and more — were in attendance.

Last week, Markle declared her love for the prince by wearing a gold, personalized necklace with the letters M and H on it. A friend of the actress recently told PEOPLE Markle is “head over heels” for Harry, who made a major detour after a 15-day tour of the Caribbean to see his girlfriend on his way back home.

Couple Celebrates 70th Anniversary With Wedding Shoot They Never Had

High school sweethearts Ferris and Margaret Romaire had no photos from their 1946 wedding day. So for the couple’s 70th anniversary this year, their granddaughter Amanda Kleckley planned a photo shoot reenacting the wedding pictures they missed out on the first time around.

Amanda contacted photographer Lara Carter, who was eager to help. For the Oct. 12 shoot in Pearland, Texas, Ferris, 90, sported a tux, while Margaret, 89, donned a lavender gown and a veil. The couple smiled ear-to-ear as they canoodled and sipped on some celebratory champagne.

“You can see the love between them in the way they interacted with each other and laughed together as we would go from the different poses,” Lara told The Huffington Post. “They are a beautiful example of what marriage is meant to be.”

The couple shared some pearls of relationship wisdom with Lara, who has been married for seven years herself. Ferris said the key to a long marriage is “giving each other space and respecting one another” and also “admitting when you are wrong, except that Margaret is never wrong!”

Margaret, too, underlined the importance of a good apology.

“If you ask Margaret she would say, ‘saying you’re sorry, except that Ferris has a hard time doing that!’” Lara told HuffPost. “If a problem came up they solved it. It was more important to compromise and move on than to be right. Two was always better than one!”

The Romaires’ wedding on Nov. 24, 1946 was a simple affair. The ceremony lasted just 15 minutes and the reception was held at the bride’s parents’ home. And for the last 70 years, Ferris and Margaret have continued to keep things simple in their hometown of Morgan City, Louisiana.

“They still live in the same home they built for a growing family 65 years ago,” Lara said. “They didn’t have lots of money, but they had lots of shared values ― the love of children, a good work ethic, a strong faith in God and a sense of humor.”

The Romaires now have four kids, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Below, more photos from their heartwarming photo shoot:

Kylie Jenner Celebrates Tyga’s Birthday With Topless Photoshoot We Can Never Unsee

In another chapter in the OMG MY EYES chronicles of Kylie Jenner and Tyga, the rapper celebrated his 27th year on planet Earth by burying his face in his girlfriend’s chest and sticking his hand down her jeans for a new photoshoot.

Apparently overcompensating for Kim’s extended absence from social media is a full-time job, because Kylie shared the two topless photos on Instagram Saturday.

In one photo captioned “Happy birthday baby,” young Jenner, seated on Tyga’s lap, pulls him close to her chest, while he grabs her from behind.

Tyga and Kylie have been dating on and off for around two years. They split and then reconciled before the rapper’s birthday last November, just long enough for Kylie to make out with PartyNextDoor in his music video. Only time will tell what the next year has in store for these two, so in the meantime we’ll be surveying their social media activity with extreme caution.

Mark your calendar for Friday, May 13, because that’s when you can purchase your very own copy of Wild Ponies new album, “Radiant” out on No Evil Records. To tide you over, here is the exclusive premiere of the video for the hauntingly beautiful, “The Night We Never Met,” from the new album.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsqgCXl8Dzo&feature=youtu.be

Telisha says, “The idea of a video of me in a slip would’ve terrified me a year ago, but about five months ago, I started taking burlesque dancing lessons, and my opinions of my body have completely changed. It’s my body, and it’s carried me through some incredibly beautiful and traumatizing moments. There’s a power in me and my body that didn’t recognize and appreciate before. Without my burlesque experiences and community, I don’t think I would have been able to lay confidently on a bed in the middle of a snowy field in Kentucky on a 20-degree night.”

While I found the whole album to be brilliant, if you’re not sold on “The Night We Never Met,” buy it for the single, “Love Is Not A Sin,” alone. Trust me on this one.

Here’s a snippet of a verse: “It doesn’t matter who you love, when two lovers find each other, I’d say it’s sanctioned from above …”

The tune was written long before North Carolina’s H.B.2 and similar legislation was recently enacted, but it addresses the issue head on in Wild Ponies unique rootsy, rock and oh-so eloquent way. Listen for yourself here.

Natives Doug and Telisha Williams came full circle on Saturday night for an album’s release party at The Rives Theatre in downtown Martinsville, Virginia. If you missed it, you can hear the band perform at Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival on May 26-29 in nearby Axton, Virginia. Warning: Ticket prices go up May 1 and are going fast.

“My mom started hosting house concerts in early 2001 in her basement,” Doug explains. “She had Hayes Carll and The Green Cards as backup bands along with a bunch of others. We then helped start an organization called Artisan Cafe in town.”

That Artisan Cafe eventually merged with another group to form ARTS at The Rives Theatre, where the couple played on Saturday to an appreciative hometown crowd including parents, cousins and longtime friends. “We knew family that owned The Rives and we helped start the nonprofit ARTS at The Rives before we moved to East Nashville. We stayed for a long time trying to turn it around and make it an artisitic place.

“We’re thrilled with how it’s going. They are doing just an awesome job and we’re excited to have our album release party there.”

The Americana, folk, alt-country group also includes Megan Jane and Fats Kaplin who produce a sound on the album that seems to radiate from a much larger, fuller band.

“Radiant” is the sophomore album for Wild Ponies, formerly known as Doug and Telisha Williams. They decided to change the name of the group because it was more than just the husband-and-wife duo, who have been playing together since high school. Their longtime collaboration as musical partners — Doug on guitar and Telisha on stand-up bass — and life partners is apparent on stage and they say translates into a telepathy that other bands may not have.

“We changed over to Wild Ponies with the last record, ‘Things That Used to Shine,’ ” Telisha explained in a recent phone interview. “When you hear two names, it’s what you envision, pretty folk, acoustic and kind of not how our music was going.”

Indeed. “Born With a Broken Heart” and “Unplug the Machine” from “Radiant” are perfect examples of the band’s evolution to a harder-edge sound as well as “Trigger” from the aforementioned album. Doug added, “We felt like things are shifting and changing and even as a duo it didn’t accurately describe who we were. Wild Ponies shifted a little more electric.”

Telisha adds that she and Doug believe in building a creative community and participating in a creative community. “I feel like this is such a record of collaboration ,” she said, adding they co-write with friends on a regular basis.

One of the collaborations they are most excited about is the title track they co-wrote with 12-year-old Mariah Moore, whom the Williamses met through volunteering with the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Words & Music program.

“I have to admit, there’s probably a little defiance in all of this,” Telisha said in release. “Bucking the way things ‘should’ be done. We just want to make good art, and that usually means bending some rules.”

“Tower and the Wheel,” partly inspired by an old tree on Doug’s grandparents’ farm, signifies another theme — celebrating the past, with a few modern twists. The song includes details about the tree that’s stood for generations on the family farm, but the B-sections were inspired by tarot cards. I personally hear shades of Nanci Griffith in Telisha’s voice on this particular track.

“I’ve known that tree my whole life. It knew my mom and my grandparents even way back before that. That tree was really old before anyone in my family owned the farm. But she’s still there, strong as ever,” Doug said. “It’s where we’d tie the horses, and where we’d pull the porch chairs around in the shade and the dirt and play songs, where Telisha and I cut our wedding cake.”

But when Doug and Telisha were writing the chorus sections of the song, they took an unconventional approach “Nothing we were trying was working, so we laid out eight Tarot cards and wrote all those eight parts right from the way they fell. They lined up perfectly between our verses and finished the story for us.”

For Doug, “Radiant” is about reaching out from within, looking at the world around, relating to it, and trying to find some empathy. For Telisha, it’s also about standing still, tall, and true.

“Listening to our last record, I hear the struggle. I hear the transition of a victim pushing, pulling, letting go, standing up, and shouting,” she said. “This record is more stable and secure in some ways but raw and exploratory in others. There’s an acceptance and love for myself. I’m feeling confident in my own skin. A skin that’s full of battle scars and flaws, but that I’ve learned to love and appreciate, maybe for first time.”

There’s no slowing down Wild Ponies it appears. Doug says this summer the band plans to make an all-acoustic record at his grandfather’s farm in Galax, Virginia.

“My grandfather played with old-time players from Galax and around that area, so we’re going to bring some of our Nashville friends and hopefully throw them together with some guys from Galax right after the Old Fiddlers’ Convention.”

I Never Experienced Parenthood Until I Became My Mother’s Caretaker

2016-04-27-1461786538-4400435-ScreenShot20160427at12.47.08PM.png

“Who’s Your Mama?”

By the time I was 20, I was sure having children wasn’t for me. It was a conscious decision, but to fully understand the reason why, not so simple. To this day, I cannot fully answer why my desire was to live my life childless. I have no regrets with that life choice or any others I have made along the way.

How could I have known at 54 years old the essence of a child would enter my life in the guise of a mother challenged by Alzheimer’s? I did not ask for this, but it is the current chapter of my life. What this flip-flopped role of daughter becoming mother has shown me is what a wonderful mother I would have been… what a wonderful “mother” I am!

My role reversal with mom is nothing short of amazing. The dynamic of being thrust into this “parental” role is life-changing. I have learned to embrace this frail being whose existence has become dependency and helplessness. Her emotional tantrums that seem to flair up when things don’t go just as she expected. No fault of her own, of course, just another result of the disconnect in her thought process from her disease.

How could I have known at 54 years old the essence of a child would enter my life in the guise of a mother challenged by Alzheimer’s?

Preparing healthy meals and snacks and administering medications are daily affairs. Gently cleansing her 86 year old body in lavender suds as she clings to me in the shower. Pulling her outfits out for the day and often getting vetoed by her for my blouse or trouser choice due to color or fabric. Transporting her to appointments and engagements to keep her healthy. Scolding her for mishaps, only to later embrace her with warm hugs and apologies. Washing her clothes, paying the bills, cleaning our home to make her feel safe and secure.

It is truly like raising a child.

There is only one difference and it is a very big one. As our parents did all these wondrous life caring tasks for us as children, we learned just how truly fortunate we were. As we aged, we gained a deep and loving appreciation for them that would grow as we grew. We learned how to reward their efforts by making them proud of us with our journeys in life.

With the Alzheimer’s “child,” the “parent” and their care are usually forgotten in the flash of a moment. They live in the moment, but as it slides past, they have no recollection of the delicious dinner or the warm towel wrapped around them after their shower. They don’t remember who the gift was from at Christmas or that the cake was in celebration of their birthday. They cannot be thankful for their caregivers attention to the administering of medication because as soon as they swallow the pills they have forgotten they have been given them.

Looking into her sweet, sunken eyes and knowing she is safe is enough reward for me.

It certainly is not that they don’t appreciate you as you place their dinner upon the flowered placemat or apply the moisturizer to their dry winter skin or clean the lenses on their eyeglasses. It’s just as soon as you finish this caring gesture, in their afflicted mind, it is gone. They don’t remember any of it.

So my “child” does not strive to make me proud with good grades or personal accomplishments. She just needs me. She needs my mind for hers is failing. And my “child” does not need to make me proud, for my pride comes in knowing I am doing the best I can for her. I do not need accolades. Looking into her sweet, sunken eyes and knowing she is safe is enough reward for me.

And as I tuck her into bed this evening and kiss her on the forehead, I will turn out the light knowing I was the best “mother” I could be.

We Can Definitively Say We’ve Never Seen Taylor Swift Wear This Before

Taylor Swift, is that you?!

The singer recently stepped out in a look that’s so far from her signature crop top and circle skirt combo that it required a comically over-the-top double take. Is this the further influence of boyfriend Calvin Harris on her off-duty style? We investigate.

Taylor Swift off brand styleAKM-GSI

Over the last couple of years, Swift’s ultra-feminine style (think: girlie matching sets, prim purses and glam heels) has become her signature. But lately, the 1989 singer been stepping out in looks that are so far from her go-to girly and frilly ensembles to much more dressed-down outfits. And it’s all culminated in this.

Swift stepped out in a pair of itty-bitty denim shorts, an oversize camo-printed military jacket, an oversize black Saint Laurent bag and … a pair of sneakers! Yes, the queen of heels ditched her usual sky-high footwear for a toned-down (and comfortable) pair of Coachella-inspired, fringe Saint Laurent sneakers during a girlfriend get-together in Malibu.

This isn’t the only look that supports our theory on Tay’s evolving style. A few weeks ago, she wore a show-stopping silver metallic two-piece set (technically still in her style wheelhouse) with sexy cutouts and a daringly high hemline. She teamed the form-fitting number with strappy black sandals and a Jimmy Choo burgundy chain-strap purse. (And we can’t forget her weekend filled with sheer, shimmery LBDS.)

But we’re still stuck on those jean shorts and fringed sneakers. Is she prepping for a Calvin Harris set at Coachella? Will we next see her in a crochet bikini top and Frye boots? We’ll find out this weekend.

What do you think of Taylor’s new style? Do you miss her circle skirts? Share below!

What Every Successful Person Knows, But Never Says

Ira Glass is the host and executive producer of the popular National Public Radio show, This American Life.

Each week, This American Life is broadcast to more than 1.7 million listeners across 500 different radio stations. For Glass, who is featured in almost every episode, the show has led to a wide range of opportunities including book deals, feature films, and appearances on popular television shows.

Of course, it wasn’t always that way.

What Every Successful Person Knows, But Never Says

Glass started out at NPR as a 19-year-old intern. The next decade was filled with a lot of hard work and very little payoff as he worked as a reporter.

Fifteen years into his career, Glass finally began co-hosting his first show, which was called The Wild Room. The show was his idea, but Glass would later describe it by saying “one show would be horrible and two shows would be decent.” The Wild Room aired during a particularly unpopular Friday evening slot and in Glass’ words “it deserved its time slot.”

After struggling through two years of The Wild Room, Glass finally pitched the idea for This American Life and received meager funding to get it started. Over 15 years and millions of listeners later, the rest is history.

But here’s the part that I find really interesting.

Check out how Ira Glass describes his long struggle to create something noteworthy:

From Ira Glass:

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, and I really wish somebody had told this to me.

All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But it’s like there is this gap. For the first couple years that you’re making stuff, what you’re making isn’t so good. It’s not that great. It’s trying to be good, it has ambition to be good, but it’s not that good.

But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you’re making is kind of a disappointment to you. A lot of people never get past that phase. They quit.

Everybody I know who does interesting, creative work they went through years where they had really good taste and they could tell that what they were making wasn’t as good as they wanted it to be. They knew it fell short. Everybody goes through that.

And if you are just starting out or if you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or every month you know you’re going to finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you’re going to catch up and close that gap. And the work you’re making will be as good as your ambitions.

I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It takes awhile. It’s gonna take you a while. It’s normal to take a while. You just have to fight your way through that.
–Ira Glass

If you’d like to hear Glass say it himself, listen to the audio clip below.

The Thing That Got You Into The Game

We all have reasons for being pulled to the things we love.

When he was just a 19-year-old intern, Ira Glass had a taste for journalism and storytelling. He knew what good journalism looked like when it was done well. But it took him 17 years of work before he could start to do it well himself. And, as he says above, that was frustrating.

I think you and I face a similar type of battle.

  • Spend a year or two in the gym and you’ll start to recognize good technique, even if your own could use some work. This is something I’m struggling with right now. I know a great clean and jerk when I see one, but when I grab hold of the bar it’s still hard for me to pull it off.
  • Start writing consistently and you’ll begin to take notice when you read great work. But good luck trying to produce your own brilliant words. In the beginning, it can be difficult just to get something on the page. And even when you can hammer out sentences, young writers quickly learn that all words aren’t created equal. Even with consistent writing each week, I still feel like I fail to produce something of note.
  • Watch a dozen TED Talks and you’ll be able to point out what you like and don’t like about certain presenters, but jump up on stage yourself and the difficulty of captivating an audience — even for a minute or two — becomes quite apparent.

And so it goes for virtually any skill. There is always a gap between being an apprentice and being a craftsman. The apprentice has the taste, but not the skill. The craftsman has the taste and the skill.

It’s easier to recognize beauty than it is to create it. You’re good enough to know that what you’re doing isn’t good, but not good enough to produce something great. When you find yourself in this frustrating limbo, the challenge is to never forget what got you there in the first place. Remember that thing that got you into the game.

Your love. Your passion. Your taste. That’s the reason you’re here. You still belong, even if you don’t feel like it right now. Your taste can be killer even if your ability is questionable.

Commit to the process and you’ll become good enough, soon enough. Put in a volume of work. Close the gap.

What to Do Next

Developing skills that are as good as your taste comes down to habits. The ability to “fight your way through” as Glass says, hinges on your consistency to show up and do the work. Can you build the habits required to make small improvements day after day?

I don’t claim to have all the answers, but my hope is that I can help a little bit. I’ve spent the last year writing and researching the science of habit formation. Much of what I have learned (including strategies for becoming more consistent and improving your performance) is covered in my free 46-page guide called Transform Your Habits. A Woman’s Work Is Never Done

It’s no secret that many women are smarter than men. Why? As a rule, women are not just naturally intuitive, but constantly challenged to solve problems relating to home, family, and career while men often have the luxury of delegating or ignoring such responsibilities. During an interview at the University of Colorado in Boulder, the most honorable Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted that:

I’m sometimes asked when will there be enough [women on the Supreme Court]? And I say ‘When there are nine.’ People are shocked. But there’ve been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.

It’s easy to see why men would be shocked by Ginsburg’s reply. All one has to do is consider their behavior, as evidenced in these clips from 1957’s The Music Man and 1970’s Company.

Obviously, women see things differently (as evidenced in these two numbers from 1950’s Guys and Dolls and 1964’s Hello, Dolly!).

The battle of the sexes may be as old as time. But men often approach the battlefield armed with belligerence, brawn and bravado while women manage to bewitch, bother, and bewilder them with a potent combination of brains and beauty. In many historical periods men have automatically assumed power while women had to use whatever knowledge was available to gain and assert their power.

A newly restored print of a 1920 comedy directed by Robert Thornby turned out to be one of the more delightful surprises at the 2015 San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Wikipedia offers the following summary of the plot of The Deadlier Sex:

Based upon a review in a film publication, Mary Willard (Blanche Sweet), who has taken control of her father’s interests after his death, has become so exasperated at the unscrupulous business practices of Harvey Judson (Mahlon Hamilton) that she has him kidnapped to teach him a lesson and protect her shareholders against him.

Blanche Sweet as Mary Willard in The Deadlier Sex

When Harvey wakes up in the forest, he initially believes that robbery was the motive until he discovers that no money was taken. He tries to bribe his guide to take him to the nearest settlement but to no avail, and, after two fist fights with a Frenchman (Boris Karloff) who is also in love with Mary, eventually comes up with a scheme which leads to his discovery by his friends.

When Harvey finds that Mary was the cause of this, they argue and he accuses her of trying to ruin him. While on the way to the nearest train station they have an automobile crash that nearly kills them. At the station, after they are told that the government has seized their property, Mary and Harvey decide to work together in the future.

Blanche Sweet as Mary Willard in The Deadlier Sex

After appearing on stages since she was four years old (Sweet started her career touring with Maurice Barrymore in The Battle of the Strong), the teenaged actress starred in D.W. Griffith’s 1914 film, Judith of Bethulia. Although set to appear in 1915’s The Birth of A Nation, she was replaced by Lillian Gish.

Shot on location in and around Truckee, California, Sweet later referred to The Deadlier Sex as one of the films “I knew I shouldn’t do.” Her characterization of Mary Willard as a sly, intelligent, resourceful, and cunning young businesswoman was a far cry from the stereotypical damsel in distress that was a staple of so many silent films.

2015-07-31-1438321733-7838949-deadliersex3.jpg

Blanche Sweet as Mary Willard in The Deadlier Sex

In addition to the young Boris Karloff’s portrayal of a macho trapper, The Deadlier Sex featured strong performances by Winter Hall as Mary’s father, Roy Laidlaw as Huntley Green, and Russell Simpson as Jim Willis. With live accompaniment by Guenter Buchwald, the film had a certain rustic charm.

Although Sweet was a major star in silent films (who even managed a brief transition to talkies), few of her films are available today. In 1930’s Show Girl in Hollywood, she introduced the song “There’s a Tear for Every Smile in Hollywood,” whose lyrics read as follows:

You’re like a million others
Who seek the road to fame
But soon you’ll realize
It’s not an easy climb.
You’ll find like all the others
Whose dreams are just the same
The road is not as rosy
As Sunday papers claim.

There’s a tear for every smile in Hollywood
Every mile’s a weary mile in Hollywood
A million dreams are born with each day
A million dreams keep fading away
Like the spider and the fly is Hollywood
Where a broken-hearted sigh is understood
Though fortune seems to beckon to some
There’s a tear for every smile in Hollywood.

While women may have felt oppressed for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, at least they didn’t have to fear a legal (and loathsome) form of rape known as the droit du seigneur. A purportedly popular practice in late Medieval Europe, droit du seigneur gave a feudal lord the right to take the virginity of his serfs’ daughters.

That practice is a pivotal plot point in 1778’s The Marriage of Figaro (a play by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais that was adapted into a four-act opera buffa by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1786). Not only must Susanna find a way to keep the Count Almaviva’s hands off her as she prepares to wed the Count’s servant, Figaro, she must also find a way to help her mistress (the Countess Almaviva) save her marriage from the embarrassment of the Count’s constant philandering.

Add to the mix a horny page, a curious birthmark, a drunken gardener, a lusty old spinster who claims to have won the right to marry Figaro if he defaults on a loan, as well as a bitter old man who craves revenge for the way Figaro stole Rosina from under his roof (thus enabling her to marry the Count Almaviva) and you’ve got lots of mischief involving mistaken identities framed by a magical musical score.

As part of its 2015 summer season, the San Francisco Opera revived its 33-year-old production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, populating the cast with five former Adler Fellows (including conductor Patrick Summers), one current Adler Fellow (Maria Valdes as Barbarina), and a veteran of the Merola Opera Program who has performed with the company for more than four decades (John del Carlo).

The casting paid off in spades. Philippe Sly’s sonorous Figaro was far more athletic (and almost balletic) than what one usually encounters; as Susanna, Lisette Oropesa glowed with the charm and sparkle of a young woman in love (and sang rapturously as well). Luca Pisaroni’s Count Almaviva was a special delight, nicely balanced by Nadine Sierra’s portrayal of his Countess.

In comedic supporting roles, John Del Carlo scored strongly as Bartolo with Catherine Cook as a robust Marcellina. Greg Fedderly was a delightfully meddlesome Basilio while John Easterlin added to the fun as Don Curzio. Bojan Knezevi was a noticeably besotted Antonio.

At the performance I attended Angela Brower easily won over the audience as Cherubino. But what made the evening especially satisfying for me was the savvy stage direction by Robin Guarino, who added telling bits of body language for Figaro, Susanna, and Cherubino.

Looking back over the years, I recall that my first exposure to Le Nozze di Figaro took place sometime in the mid 1960s at the New York City Opera. That was nearly 15 years before surtitles began being projected above the proscenium in opera houses. Even when sung in English, I found it difficult to follow the plot.

These days, surtitles make it much easier for audiences to follow the text and understand the set-up for various sight gags. During one intermission, the house curtain was raised so that the audience could watch the stage crew change the scenery while a member of the company’s staff took live questions from a dedicated Twitter feed. Additional educational tools (like the following video) undoubtedly help those who are experiencing Mozart’s opera for the very first time.

Not only does today’s technology allow audiences to follow the story with surtitles, it also makes it possible for the San Francisco Opera to simulcast a live performance from the War Memorial Opera House to a packed baseball stadium across town at AT&T Park.

I was especially lucky at the performance I attended to be seated down front in the orchestra, where it was much easier to watch how certain artists (especially Luca Pisaroni) crafted their phrasing during arias and worked as part of an ensemble when required to do so by the dramatic shenanigans concocted by Beaumarchais. In an entertainment world that frequently bludgeons audiences into submission with overamplification, it’s a visceral joy to be able to hear an artist’s natural voice and experience a wide range of musical nuances.

Special credit goes to Maestro Patrick Summers, who led a beautiful performance of Mozart’s opera. The following clip offer some highlights from the San Francisco Opera’s production:
