EXCLUSIVE: Christopher Raeburn Gets Ready for the Next 10 Years

LONDON — Ten years after generating buzz with a first collection of eight garments made from military parachute fabric and big ambitions around recycling, Christopher Raeburn is gaining even greater recognition in an industry that is waking up at last to environmental sustainability and responsible design.
As Timberland’s global creative director, the London-based designer sees an opportunity to give his sustainability mission a broader, more global platform, while at his own label, Raeburn has brought on board his brother and fellow designer, Graeme Raeburn, as performance director, a new role.
The brothers are now aiming to push the boundaries of design, material innovation and waste reduction further and to redefine what success means along the way.
“For us, success is not about Raeburn products being in every store or on every street corner, quite the opposite. We want to look at growth in a much more modern way than just incremental numbers,” Raeburn said from his East London studio as he was preparing his fall 2019 show, set for Jan. 6 during London Fashion Week Men’s.

Public School’s Next Act

Public School is like a cat with nine lives.
The pioneering streetwear brand, which launched in 2008, has been in and out of the limelight over the past decade as it navigated the vagaries of the fashion industry.
And when it opens the doors to its pop-up with Nike today, it will mark the latest reinvention strategy for the brand.
Last year, Public School collaborated with Nike on a sneaker centered around the Air Force 1. Although the initial design was created for the shoe’s 35th anniversary, it was never released to the public. That will change today when the sneaker will be front and center — along with complimentary apparel — at PSNY’s pop-up space at 3 Howard Street in Manhattan. The shoe will be released globally on Wednesday.
This is the first time Public School has worked with the core Nike collection, although the designers collaborated on the company’s Jordan brand since 2014.
To celebrate the new partnership, the designers and Nike will host a Streetball Classic event on a court on East Houston Street before the store opens to the public tonight.

Ewert Departure Seen as His Decision, but Firm Ready for Next Chapter

It was Doug Ewert’s choice to leave Tailored Brands, but his departure as chief executive officer is also seen as an opportunity to get some fresh blood into the company.
That was the consensus of the men’s wear community on Wednesday as they continued to digest the surprise news late Tuesday that the longtime leader of the Fremont, Calif.-based company would be exiting at the end of September. Ewert, 54, said after the market closed on Tuesday that he would be retiring after a 23-year career with the men’s wear retailer.
Wall Street was apparently not rattled by the news since the company’s stock rose 4 percent Wednesday to close at $ 23.39.
On Wednesday, Ewert told WWD he would be open to providing more details about his decision and future plans after the company’s earnings are released on Sept. 12.
Coincidentally, the news of Ewert’s impending departure came at the same time Bruce Thorn, president and chief operating officer, said he too would be leaving Tailored Brands. Thorn, 51, has been named president and ceo of Big Lots Inc. He will assume that role at the end of September.
Once both Ewert and Thorn are gone next month, that leaves Tailored Brands without its two

J.W. Anderson Said Closing in on Next CEO

WHO’S THE BOSS?: It looks like J.W. Anderson has been looking for its new chief executive officer close to home — at LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, which took a 46 percent stake in Jonathan Anderson’s brand in 2013.
According to market sources, the designer is in talks to install Jenny Galimberti, Louis Vuitton’s global communications and events director, at the management helm.
The likelihood of her appointment being finalized could not immediately be learned.
Such a choice would reflect LVMH’s penchant for grooming executives from within — and an industry trend to selecting ceos from communications and marketing roles.
The ceo slot at London-based J.W. Anderson has been vacant since the end of last year, when Simon Whitehouse left his post after three years, citing personal reasons.
It is understood a search for Galimberti’s successor at Vuitton is under way, but not concluded. Names in the frame are said to include Stefano Cantino, who in June exited Prada Group, where he was strategic marketing director.

Don’t Expect YouTube to Drop Big Bucks for the Next Game of Thrones

At the 2018 Television Critics Association summer press tour, YouTube’s global head of original programming, Susanne Daniels, detailed her financial strategy in regards to original programming and how it will differ from the company’s competitors, like Amazon and Netflix.

“You’re probably not gonna see us spend that level of money for a Game of Thrones or a comparable series like Westworld,” Daniels said. “But I’ve always been a believer that you can make great shows for less and it’s not the episodic spend that can make something great.”

It’s no secret that streaming giants Netflix and Amazon are spending large sums of money to strengthen their footholds in the digital video landscape. Netflix will reportedly outspend every studio in Hollywood this year, while Amazon is dropping a whopping $ 1 billion on five seasons of their newly acquired Lord of the Rings franchise. Even Apple has been moving aggressively into scripted programming, with big development deals for an Amazing Stories reboot from Steven Spielberg, a thriller from M. Altagamma to Host Inaugural ‘Next Design Perspectives’ Summit

MILAN — Altagamma continues to support the Italian creative companies it represents with a new summit, scheduled for Oct. 30 at Milan’s Triennale design museum.
The “Next Design Perspectives,” which is expected to take place annually, will focus on socioeconomic macro trends shaping the future of design and creativity.
The goal of the initiative is to promote Italian creative skills by discussing and depicting the expected evolution of design over the next few years, beginning with research Altagamma commissioned from London-based trend forecasting firm WGSN. The study will be unveiled during the summit in October.
“Design is challenged by technology, which is only partially related to the digital transformation, and is opening up to new ecosystems — such as socioeconomic places — where design really actualizes. These ecosystems are facing the challenge of modernization,” said Altagamma president Andrea Illy.
“Milan is a key city in terms of design and creativity, but it lacked an event investigating such topics especially to give small- and medium-sized enterprises answers about the future of design, how it will look and what are the strategies to follow,” explained Dario Rinero, the event’s project leader and chief executive officer of Poltrona Frau Group.

It had previously popped up in the event’s abbreviated form, but is now the official event name.
Moreover, Zalando will be launching a year-round shopping hub, breadandbutter.com, at the end of August. The online “destination for style and culture” will feature exclusive product drops and a trend assortment of selected streetwear brands, Zalando said.
Prior to the preview, Carsten Hendrich, vice president of Creative Lab Zalando, told WWD, “When we first started B&&B, we built it up like a market. It was about the shopping experience, but this year we’re moving further” with a heightened focus on product. “We worked very closely with the brands not

Reebok’s Former Creative Director Thomas Steinbrück Talks Shop, Ready for His Next Move

IT’S ALL GOOD: Rejuvenating in Switzerland now that his two-year run as Reebok’s creative director is over, Thomas Steinbrück said he is gearing up for his next post with a European company. With that announcement expected to happen in the next few weeks, he was relishing some down time with his mother. “It’s so calm. There’s nothing — just mountains, quietness, cows, fresh air, good food and I sleep like a baby here. A week is like five weeks of vacation on the beach for me,” he said.
With Reebok, he lined up the collaborations with Vetements and Cottweiler, among others. He said he oversaw a 50-person team handling graphics, creative direction and colors, but was holistically influencing more than 100 people, including the design team for shoes, apparel and Reebok Classic, among others. Steinbrück said, “I loved what I was doing. I loved that brand. I loved the team. The people are awesome there. The story of the company is incredible. I learned a lot.”
He also imagined the interiors for Reebok’s new headquarters in the Innovation and Design Building in downtown Boston working with the architectural firm Gensler. His suggestions included open seating for employees so that no one is in

The Costume Institute’s ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ to Be Previewed in Rome Next Month

WHEN IN ROME: The opening of the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is still a few months away, but organizers will stage a press preview Feb. 26 in Rome. The Met’s deputy director Carrie Rebora Barratt, The Costume Institute’s curator in charge Andrew Bolton, Anna Wintour and His Eminence Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi will be on hand for the warm-up event at Galleria Colonna.
The location of the preview in Italy is a spectacle in itself. The Roman Baroque Galleria Colonna was commissioned in the mid-1600s by Cardinal Girolamo I Colonna and his nephew, Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna. It was inaugurated by Onofrio’s son, Philip II, in 1700. The architect Antonio del Grande handled the original project, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Paolo Schor and Carlo Fontana enhanced it in the last decade of the 1600s.
The Costume Institute’s main event bows to the public in New York on May 10 and will run through Oct. 8. “Heavenly Bodies” will be housed in two locations — The Met’s Fifth Avenue museum and the Met Cloisters. “Heavenly Bodies” will juxtapose fashion and masterworks of religious art so that patrons will consider fashion’s ongoing engagement with the

A Look at PlatinumGames’ Next Action RPG

Last year’s Nier: Automata showed that Japanese developer PlatinumGames – known for creating exhilarating action games like Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance – is the perfect studio to hand over an action RPG project to. Currently, Platinum is working on Granblue Fantasy: Project Re:Link (tentative title), a PS4 exclusive action RPG based on Cygames’ mobile RPG Granblue Fantasy, which has a huge following in Japan. Platinum’s involvement makes this a game to keep an eye on even if you are not familiar with the franchise.

Cygames released gameplay footage of the game earlier this week, which shows the town and boss battle that were revealed during a livestream in December, but at a much higher resolution.

Cannes Film Festival to Start a Day Earlier Next Year

SWITCHING DATES: The Cannes Film Festival will start a day earlier next year, a change that moves the awards ceremony to Saturday, rather than Sunday as in previous years, in a bid to increase the exposure of the event.
The festival will run for the same amount of time as before, and is now scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, through Saturday, May 19.
“The festival is beginning a new period in its history,” said Pierre Lescure, who runs the event. The new schedule is intended to “rebalance the two weeks of the event” as well as bring “new energy to the proceedings,” after celebrating the 70th anniversary last year, organizers of the film bonanza said in a statement.
“We intend to renew the principles of our organization as much as possible, while continuing to question the cinema of our age and to be present through its upheavals,” Lescure also said.
The Tuesday start also means an additional gala evening before the festival weekend.

Is Photography/Modeling Next Industry to Be Investigated?

IMAGE MAKERS: According to sources, The New York Times is said to be working on an investigative article about top fashion photographers and abuse in the modeling industry, and the story could be coming out soon. Sources said the Times’ team working on the story includes Jacob Bernstein and Vanessa Friedman.
A New York Times spokeswoman said, “As a general rule, we don’t comment on what may or may not publish in future editions.”
“It is apparent that the conversation needs to happen, and this industry as a whole needs to take a really close look at years of tolerated and accepted practices and deal with its consequences. Abuse comes in all shapes and forms, psychological pressure, verbal and sexual abuse being the most obvious,” said David Bonnouvrier, founder of DNA Model Management.
There have been numerous press reports over the last month about harassment in various forms in industries ranging from Hollywood to media to politics. The Times broke the story about allegations involving Harvey Weinstein and sexual harassment, which was followed by an in-depth report in The New Yorker.
Earlier this month, Edie Campbell, one of Britain’s best-known models and a vocal member of Cameron Russell’s online campaign to raise awareness around
