Lululemon Introduces Lightweight Bra for Day and Night

Lululemon continues to build out its bra assortment.
The activewear brand is launching the Like Nothing Bra, a style that they’ve worked on for more than four years in Lululemon’s research and development lab, Whitespace. While surveying women, Lululemon found that women wanted to feel “better than naked” in their bra.
“We started doing research on bras about four years ago. We wanted to get to the heart at how women want to feel in their sports bra,” said Alexandra Plante, director of Innovation Management at Lululemon’s in-house R&D hub, Whitespace. “So many women feel like they have to compromise comfort and we identified some opportunities to create a bra that was supportive and still comfortable.”
The bra is meant for everyday use but still features performance details. Its constructed with Light Ultralu, a fabric created by Lululemon that features Lycra and molds to the body. It also provides sweat-wicking and breathability. For added comfort the there are very few seams and free-cut edges with a hook and eye closure that lies flat against the body and is stitch free.
It retails for $ 68, comes in 20 different sizes ranging from 32B-E; 34A-E; 36A-E and 38C-DD. To accommodate different breast sizes and densities, molded

How a Simple Mistake Helped Night of the Living Dead Become a Classic

George Romero’s horror classic Night of the Living Dead is where the modern concept of the zombie as we understand it today really started. The film didn’t just essentially launch the zombie sub-genre, but it remains to this day eminently re-watchable — truly one of the giants of horror cinema.

And indeed, as the film hits its 50th anniversary this year, it continues to inspire new fans, new works, and new critical evaluation. The new book Journey of the Living Dead: A Tribute to Fifty Years of Flesh Eaters, by Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg, celebrates 100 years of cinematic zombies with an analysis of how Night of the Living Dead permanently impacted the media landscape. Blumberg, who is an occasional contributor to IGN, has provided us with an exclusive excerpt from the book which delves into the curious case of NOTLD’s copyright, of lack thereof, and how it helped to contribute to the film’s massive success. Read on for the full excerpt…

Rihanna Runs on Less Than Four Hours of Sleep a Night

STAYING AWAKE: What does it take to become Rihanna? Less than four hours’ sleep per night, apparently.
The “Wild Thoughts” singer shares insights into her personal life and inspirations as guest editor of the December issue of Vogue Paris, scheduled to go on sale on Dec. 1. The issue comes with three separate covers shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Jean-Paul Goude and Juergen Teller.
A section titled “A Girl Like Me” opens with a candid shot of Rihanna divebombing into a pool in the Dominican Republic. In the accompanying caption, she reveals that she usually likes to spend her days off on tour sightseeing rather than sunbathing.
“I have a lot of trouble switching off. Even when I get home early, which means before 1 a.m., I start binge-watching shows or documentaries, which I love. I can’t go straight to bed. As a matter of fact, I only sleep three or four hours a night,” she is quoted as saying in the French text.

Vogue Fashion’s Night Out in Milan Revises Format

MILAN — Milan’s leg of the Vogue Fashion’s Night Out event is revamping its format for the ninth edition, which will be held Sept. 14. Vogue Italia’s new editor in chief Emanuele Farneti unveiled the new logo and program during a press conference Wednesday at the central Palazzo Morando here.
This year, the initiative will be promoted under the “Vogue for Milano” moniker, introduced to stress the bond between the city and the magazine.
“The project at the core of Vogue Italia is to focus on Italy and [develop] a complete narrative on it, aimed to an international audience,” said Farneti, adding that the magazine’s September issue will be dedicated to such a theme.
Before introducing the calendar of events, Farneti underscored the important role Vogue Italia’s late editor in chief Franca Sozzani had in promoting and enhancing the shopping evening in Italy through the years, making it one of the longest running versions worldwide. In addition, he stressed the importance of developing and increasing the initiative’s cultural offering, including events related to the world of cinema, photography and music.
Partnering with Fashion Film Festival Milano, Vogue Italia will host the “Through My Eyes Episode Two — Women’s View” screening of five fashion films, which

Tim Cook ‘Reveals’ Who Is Really Behind Donald Trump’s Late Night Tweets

Tim Cook used part of his address to graduating students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday to poke fun at President Donald Trump.

The Apple CEO began by saying he’d never figured out how students at the university in Cambridge pulled off their spectacular course-end pranks ― such as the placing of a propeller atop the campus’ Great Dome.

“Or how you’ve obviously taken over the president’s Twitter account,” Cook added. “I can tell college students are behind it because most of the tweets happen at 3 a.m.”

Cook went on to deliver some serious advice to the class of 2017, and the effect that the online world may have on their lives.

“The internet has enabled so much and empowered so many. But it can also be a place where the basic rules of decency are suspended and pettiness and negativity thrive,” Cook said.

He encouraged students not to let “the noise knock you off course” or to “get caught up on the trivial aspects of life.”

“Don’t listen to the trolls, and for God’s sake don’t become one,” Cook added. “Measure your impact on humanity not in likes, but in the lives you touch. Not in popularity, but in the people you serve.”

Donald Trump Was Funnier Than ‘Saturday Night Live’

In a now infamous clip from July 2015, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) suggested on ABC’s “The Week” that Donald Trump might become the president. To this, host George Stephanopoulos and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman broke out into laughter.

Then, and since that time, Trump’s words and actions have appeared so ridiculous and terrible that from a certain perspective, it is darkly hilarious this person became the President of The United States.

In the week leading up to the “Saturday Night Live” season finale last weekend, Trump-related reporting went into overdrive, as The New York Times and The Washington Post published extremely damaging stories about the current administration on a daily basis. By Thursday, the Times felt their readers could use a story titled “Trying Not to Drown in a Flood of Major Breaking News.”

After an “SNL” season defined by very popular but hit-and-miss Trump parodies, the show finished with an episode that barely even addressed the major headlines of the past week. In a cold open that mirrored the show’s opening after Hillary Clinton’s loss, Alec Baldwin played Trump while singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” The real Trump had had a terrible past few days, and the show probably correctly assumed the viewers already knew that. It seems the writers decided there was little they could possibly add, other than acknowledge it, shrug and wink.

“Donald Trump presents something of a conundrum to political humorists who consider him a gift from God but a man who has repeatedly proven himself zanier, wackier, and funnier than whatever professional ridiculers can come up with,” wrote James Andrew Miller, the author of Live From New York: The Complete, Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live as Told by Its Stars, Writers, and Guests, back in fall 2015 for Vanity Fair.

Miller continued on about Trump for this piece, describing him as someone “who one-ups and out-does his own comic critics; who out-lampoons the lampooners; and who raises the bar so high that comedians have trouble reaching it.”

“SNL” may have had a very successful season in terms of achieving a relatively large viewership, as they beat out their typical ratings on just about a weekly basis.

But even if this country turned its tired eyes to “SNL” in seeking catharsis for the Trump mess, the 42nd season of the show often faltered in trying to top the inherent hilarity of the news itself.

Trump was a tower, and “SNL” never escaped that shadow.

The problem “SNL” faced this season was not lost on critics.

The Verge published a review of the Alec Baldwin-hosted episode in February with the lede, “’Saturday Night Live’ is enjoying its highest ratings in over 20 years, despite lending absolutely no credence to the argument that comedy might improve under the Trump administration.” The article went on to give praise to Melissa McCarthy’s Sean Spicer impression (focusing on her physical comedy gifts), but then argued, “The rest of last night’s mostly political episode was a series of riffs on the easiest possible joke you could make about anything Trump does: he’s stupid and he’s sad and he doesn’t know what he’s doing.”

A review on The Ringer of McCarthy’s turn at hosting the show in May pointed out that as this season went on, the writers seemed to struggle to cover Trump in a meaningful way. “SNL is at its best when it uses current events as a segue into comedy, rather than comedy as a means of commenting on current events,” wrote Alison Herman. “That speaks to a larger truth about ‘Saturday Night Live’: Often, the show appears to do political sketches more out of obligation than passion.”

The New Yorker focused on “the limits of Trump mockery,” pointing out that the show’s writers seemed to have more meta-jokes about how they can’t just keep making fun of him forever as the season went on. “If, in the past, ‘Saturday Night Live’ had been goading Trump to lash out, now it seemed that the show, like the rest of us, was asking him to cut it out,” wrote the New Yorker’s Ian Crouch.

Oftentimes, this “SNL” season felt like one big sigh, an under-the-breath muttering of “are we doing this again?” and then a satirical recap aimed at the deluge of bad Trump news. And, of course, none of this was helped by the show’s decision to have Trump host the show while he was still a candidate (an experience former “SNL” star Taran Killam confirmed was “not fun”).

The 42-year-old sketch show is far from in dire straits, though. As previously mentioned, the ratings were good this season. Still, there does seem to be this underlying problem ― an inadequate cog within an otherwise generally well-oiled machine.

The show just can’t beat actual news about Trump for hilarity. Even if the former is darkly and perversely funny, it still creates a huge elephant in the room for every “SNL” episode tasked with responding to the trending topics of the week. It’s always Trump. And this new reality is consistently more absurd than the political satire Americans are typically accustomed to.

Baldwin admitted to this problem in an interview with his wife, “Extra” correspondent Hilaria Baldwin, last February. “Another thing I find that’s so weird about the stuff we’re doing, we’re just repeating back what he says … Doing this is strange, but what is even more strange is this is real.”

In April, Splitsider had a great review of the show that also focused on this feeling that “SNL” inherently just goes through the motions as a result of Trump’s increasingly absurdist presidency. Here’s a passage:

“Saturday Night Live” hasn’t gotten edgy or daring or important in the age of Trump: instead life has turned into a mediocre “Saturday Night Live” sketch. “Saturday Night Live” is uniquely qualified to capture that particular moment in our zeitgeist. “What if Donald Trump were president, and he was, of course, super vulgar and obnoxious and arrogant but also super racist?” is the half-assed “Saturday Night Live” sketch idea that has become our horrifyingly half-assed reality.

Week to week, the show became predictable as well. Trump and his administration were super popular characters every single week. And so the show beat jokes to death, as if “SNL” had done featured more cowbell or Stefon over and over again, multiple times, in all its episodes.

On top of this, viewers could essentially know most of the jokes beforehand, having read about or watched it all in the news. During the week, it was likely people on social platforms like Twitter and YouTube would have made better riffs on the weekly headlines. Days later, “SNL” could offer a team of writers, expensive set design, costumes and movie stars to act out the news, but that wasn’t always enough.

This season had a few truly inspired Trump-related sketches that are deserving of the heaps of praise they received. “Through Donald’s Eyes,” starring the wrestler John Cena, comes to mind. The first iteration of McCarthy’s Spicer, obviously. “Black Jeopardy” with Tom Hanks, which came before the election but still holds up.

“SNL” undoubtedly had many highs this year, but the season finale could not come soon enough. With Trump still in office, how many times could the show really have something new to say? The man’s been the best joke in New York City for decades. At a certain point, all anyone can do is shrug and agree that the guy is still just as absurd as the week before.

Over the course of Trump’s rise, “SNL” has been far from alone in struggling to parody him. The creators of “South Park,” Trey Parker and Matt Stone expressed frustration that Trump is so ridiculous and hinted a desire to stop including him in their show. In the latest press tour for “Veep,” the team behind the show spoke out repeatedly about how their political show could never match the absurdity of the real-life Trump presidency.

“[Trump] is ruining comedy,” executive producer David Mandel matter-of-factly told HuffPost last year.

And on top of this, very obviously, Trump making comedy tricky is far from the worst thing the existence of his administration has wrought. This is something “SNL” is aware of, too. In a Hollywood Reporter interview, “Weekend Update” anchor Colin Jost summed this up well as he said:

“Anytime people are paying more attention to politics, it’s good for our show. But you almost feel like a war profiteer at times because we’ve benefited from a situation that’s so tough.”

The higher ratings this season reflect that “SNL” was mostly successful in addressing these problems. Baldwin’s Trump was funny!

But Trump was funnier.

HuffPost reached out to the Live From New York author, James Andrew Miller, to see if he’d comment as a follow-up to that prescient 2015 summarization of the Trump problem “SNL” would face.

Miller had this to say about the show’s future:

As a politician and president, Trump is an outlier in virtually every respect, so it stands to reason that even after 42 years, “SNL” is swimming in uncharted waters. And looking ahead, that means questions like, “Will the audience get burned out on Trump sketches?” and “If investigations reveal more troubling information, will things get too serious for satire?” are difficult to answer. “SNL” has seen a lot in its history and will do its best to adapt to whatever happens, but one thing can clearly be said as of now: The Trump victory was one of the best gifts to the show since it first went on the air in ‘75.

Given the seemingly endless amount of damning leaks about the Trump administration, “SNL” may not even have to reckon with a Trump presidency come next season. But in the off chance that’s not the case, the show may be doomed to exist in Trump’s dark, looming shadow.

Vanessa Bayer To Leave ‘Saturday Night Live’ After 7 Seasons

Say goodbye to Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy.

Vanessa Bayer, currently the longest-serving female cast member on “Saturday Night Live,” is reportedly leaving the show, Deadline first reported Saturday, and other outlets later confirmed. HuffPost has reached out to the comedian’s representatives for comment.

The news comes just two days after Bobby Moynihan announced his departure from the long-running sketch comedy show after nine seasons. He’ll be starring in the upcoming CBS comedy “Me, Myself & I.”

Bayer has yet to announce her future plans.

Beyond Jacob, who made regular appearances on the show’s “Weekend Update” segment, Bayer was known for her impression of Jennifer Aniston’s “Friends” character, Rachel Green, after starting on “SNL” in 2010. She’s made several appearances as a guest star on other TV shows, including “Portlandia,” “Modern Family” and “The Simpsons.” Her film career has so far included roles in 2015’s hit comedy “Trainwreck” and 2016’s “Office Christmas Party.”

The Season 42 finale of “SNL” is set to air Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC with host Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and musical guest Katy Perry.

Franchesca Ramsey Could Soon Shake Up Late Night TV With Her Own Show

YouTube star and activist Franchesca Ramsey could be getting her own late night show.

Comedy Central ordered a pilot for her untitled project, Vanity Fair reported Tuesday. The network hasn’t revealed many details about the show, but Ramsey told The Huffington Post that the project will explore identity.

“We just feel like there’s a great opportunity there to talk about different types of people that are part of this world and part of our nation and just really finding a way to separate ourselves from what we already see on television and I’m so excited that Comedy Central has faith in this to do that in a really compelling but also funny way,” she said.

Ramsey will be an executive producer on the pilot and work with her team from MTV’s “Decoded,” which she produces and hosts. The comedian, who was also a writer and contributor for “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” said the new show is an evolution of the work that she’s done on “Decoded” and her personal YouTube channel, which has more than 200,000 subscribers.

She said it’s a big deal that she could potentially be running her own show on late night television, which is notoriously white and male-dominated.

“I’m just really excited to expose people to different identities, different conversations but also to kind of reframe how they think about black women just by being myself,” she said.

Ramsey’s pilot is one of nine pilots Comedy Central ordered. The network has yet to announce its run date or whether it will get picked up for a series, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

Jay Pharoah Says ‘Saturday Night Live’ Cast Members Told Him He Was Underutilized

Jay Pharoah, comedian and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, has opened up about being let go from the sketch comedy show.

On Friday morning, Pharoah appeared on Hot 97’s “Erbo in the Morning,” and held nothing back when talking about “SNL.” If you recall, he was let go last summer, along with Taran Killam

“You go where you’re appreciated,” Pharoah told hosts Peter Rosenberg and Laura Stylez. “If you have multiple people on the cast saying things like, ‘You’re so talented and you’re able and they don’t use you and it’s unfair. And it’s making us feel bad, because they don’t use you and you’re a talent.’”

He continued, “They put people into boxes and whatever they want you to do, they expect you to do.”

Pharoah admitted he’s a “fiery” person and noted he wasn’t always willing to say yes to certain sketches when they were presented to him. He also agreed that he was put in “an impression box.” And if you watched “SNL” while Pharoah was on the show, you probably noticed he was the go-to for impersonating everyone from Jay Z to Ben Carson to Barack Obama

Another aspect of the show that rubbed Pharoah the wrong way was the lack of representation among the cast ― namely, women of color. The comedian revealed he spoke up about the issue and was almost fired because of it.

When asked if he was the catalyst for the conversation of diversity at “SNL,” Pharoah flat-out said, “Yes. I’m the reason it happened.” Eventually, Sasheer Zamata was hired as just the fifth black woman to star on the show in 2014, and writer and occasional “Weekend Update” guest Leslie Jones was promoted to a cast member later that same year.

At the end of the day though, it seems Pharoah has no hard feelings and “no beef” with “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels.

“Ain’t no problem with Lorne Michaels,” Pharoah said. “We on good graces and everything.”

Watch the whole interview above.

Stunning Photos Follow Cuba’s Drag And Trans Stars From Day To Night

When photographer David Tesinsky first heard about Malu, a transgender woman who has achieved somewhat of a celebrity status in her native Cuba, he instantly wanted to meet her.

Tesinsky, who hails from the Czech Republic, has always highlighted what he describes as “subcultural” groups in his work; he has previously documented homeless Parisians, youth activists in Iran and queer rights advocates in Belarus. He told The Huffington Post that when he finally made it to Cuba in January, he was immediately struck by Malu’s determination to live authentically, in spite of the political and social challenges the Cuban LGBTQ community continues to face.

A performer at a local theater, Malu is one of three subjects that Tesinsky captured for his “Before Night Falls” series. The others, Natasha and Alina, identify as gay men. Still, both challenge gender stereotypes in their own right, making a second living as drag performers in Havana nightclubs.

“I’m inspired by contrast,” Tesinsky told The Huffington Post. “That somebody could just be selling fruits and vegetables during the day for a living, and then can turn into a queen of the evening on stage at night,” he said. He was struck by what he describes as a lack of a distinctive “community” in the traditional sense as far as queer Cubans are concerned. “They keep it very low profile,” he said.

Tesinsky, who plans to visit Israel and Mongolia next, hopes his Cuba photographs will shed some light on how LGBTQ people are exploring gender and identity on the stage “in a country where these things haven’t been tolerated” at all until recently.

Check out “Before Night Falls” below, and view more of Tesinsky’s work here

Last Night, ‘The Bachelor’ Actually Addressed Racism

“The Bachelor” franchise is far better known for perpetuating racism than for thoughtfully discussing it. But on this week’s episode, the painfully whitewashed show actually acknowledged that racism exists and that the current political climate has heightened the visibility of overt racism. The bar is very low, but for “The Bachelor” this is uncharted territory ― and it made for pretty great TV.

This isn’t the first time the show has skimmed the surface of race in America, but it’s certainly (and sadly) the most in-depth. A few contestants have brought up their own experiences of growing up biracial during their intro packages (Christian on JoJo’s season, Taylor on this season), and we’ve seen several in-season “in the moment” interviews and conversations between the leads and their suitors in which race is addressed. Marquel on Andi’s season of “The Bachelorette” and Robyn on Sean Lowe’s season of “The Bachelor” both explicitly discussed interracial dating and the challenges they face as black contestants. But because contestants of color have traditionally rarely made it past week five or six, the show has never really discussed race beyond those simple acknowledgements that race exists. Rachel Lindsay, who got a hometown date on this season of “The Bachelor” and has already been announced as the next “Bachelorette” forced the franchise to dig ever-so-slightly deeper.

On Episode 8, Nick journeyed to Dallas to meet Rachel’s family. Though it’s already been announced that Rachel is the next Bachelorette ― and therefore won’t end up with Nick ― the date was still worth watching. Nick, who says he’s never seriously dated a black woman before, first joins her at her predominantly black church, where she makes clear that attending services together would be important to her in a relationship. Broaching religious divides, itself typically a third rail in “Bachelor” world, in such an open way made for a more honest portrait of two people navigating a possible relationship. But perhaps more importantly, Rachel makes it clear the church service was a bit of a culture test: While Nick has attended church, this would be his first time in a mostly black church. Whether he would be comfortable in that setting, she suggests, could reveal a lot about how well he’d fit into her own life.

Next, the couple meets up with Rachel’s family ― minus her father, a federal judge who couldn’t appear on the show. During the family dinner, race is an open topic of conversation. Rachel’s mother, Kathy, and sister, Constance, directly ask Nick about whether he’s dated black women before. After he emphasizes that he’s not concerned with race because of his feelings for Rachel, her sister skeptically tells the camera that ignoring race isn’t enough.

“Right now, in this climate that we’re in, I feel like we’ve seen more racism come out,” she says. “He does need to be more aware. It’s not just something you can hide and ignore and can live in your bubble.” (It’s also worth noting that this date was filmed mere days before Donald Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States.)

“The Bachelor” has historically tried to exist in a world in which real-life forces ― like religious identity, race and political viewpoint ― don’t exist. The idea that all you need is vulnerability and a spark and an open heart to find true love is an appealing fantasy that likely shields the show from putting off certain segments of its viewership (as well as its advertisers). But after 15 years, it feels obviously ridiculous at best and actively harmful at worst. We live in a country where Jewish community centers are receiving waves of bomb threats, where churches are being vandalized with white supremacist graffiti, where the President of United States signed a travel ban targeting Muslims. Even the sappiest of TV love stories cannot escape the world it takes place in.

No one wants Rachel’s arc ― on this season or her own season of the show ― to be entirely about the color of her skin. There are so many interesting things about her, it would be a pity to just focus on one part of her identity. But not talking about race has never proven an effective way of eliminating racism; being open and thoughtful about the challenges that might, sadly, accompany an interracial relationship is valuable.

A partner who understands what race and racism mean in Rachel’s life could offer her better support and understanding. It’s clear from the most recent episode of “The Bachelor” that her family wants that for her. Plus, a show that at least attempts to mirror the real-life challenges of the world it’s situated within may prove to be more interesting, relevant, and yes, entertaining, than ever before.

Tom Hiddleston proved he will do just about anything for his costars.

The Kong: Skull Island star revealed he urinated on Taboo actor Tom Hollander when the two of them were filming The Night Manager. According to Hiddleston, Hollander politely asked him to do so after getting stung by a jellyfish while filming the BBC series in Mallorca, and being a proper English gentleman, Hiddleston accommodated the request.

Unfortunately for both of them, Hiddleston has since learned the trick isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

“I’ve since read up on it and I don’t think it works — it’s an old wives’ tale,” he said.

With ‘Split,’ Horror and M. Night Shyamalan Remain Box Office Draws

The North American box office received a major boost this weekend from a pair of reliable sources: the horror genre and M. Night Shyamalan with “Split,” his 12th film. M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Split’ Defeats ‘Return Of Xander Cage’ At The Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES, Jan 22 (Variety.com) – M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” has turned into a horror hit with a surprisingly strong $ 40.2 million in its opening weekend at 3,038 North American locations.

“Split,” starring James McAvoy as a man with 24 different personalities, performed far above recent expectations for Universal and Blumhouse. It easily topped the 2015 launch of Shyamalan’s found-footage horror movie “The Visit,” which scored an opening weekend of $ 25.4 million.

“Split” doubled Vin Diesel’s launch of “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” which is heading for a second-place finish for Paramount with $ 20 million at 3,651 sites ― in line with recent forecasts. Fox’s historical drama “Hidden Figures” maintained its impressive performance in third with $ 16.3 million at 3,416 theaters for a domestic total of $ 84.2 million.

Michael Keaton’s biopic “The Founder” showed little traction for the Weinstein Company with a modest $ 3.8 million weekend at 1,115 locations.

Shyamalan produced and directed “Split” from his own script in which McAvoy’s multiple characters capture three young women and hold them hostage. The movie, which costs under $ 10 million, generated the fourth-highest opening for a Shyamalan title following “Signs” with $ 60 million, “The Village” with $ 50.7 million, and “The Last Airbender” with $ 40.3 million.

“Split” carries a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with McAvoy’s performance receiving strong reviews. Shyamalan is self-financing the project and re-teamed with horror specialist Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions after collaborating on “The Visit,” which grossed nearly $ 100 million worldwide on a $ 5 million budget.

“Xander Cage” stars Diesel as a skilled government operative character who debuted in the 2002 movie “xXx.” The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Donnie Yen, Deepika Padukone, Ruby Rose, Kris Wu, and Nina Dobrev.

D.J. Caruso directs from a script by F. Scott Frazier, which centers on Diesel’s Xander Cage coming out of self-imposed exile in a race to recover a seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box.

“Xander Cage” has an $ 85 million budget with backing from Chinese companies Huahua Media and Shanghai Film Group, which limits Paramount’s exposure to about 50%. Paramount and the two companies announced a three-year $ 1 billion co-financing deal on Thursday.

“Hidden Figures,” which won the first two weekends of 2017, held well with a 22% decline during the three days. The drama may be a major beneficiary from Tuesday’s Academy Awards nominations.

Illumination-Universal’s fifth weekend of “Sing” led the rest of the pack in fourth with $ 9 million at 3,193 locations for a 33-day take of $ 249.4 million. Lionsgate’s awards contender “La La Land” finished a close fifth with $ 8.4 million at 1,865 sites to push its total to nearly $ 90 million.

Eva Amurri Reveals Her Night Nurse Dropped Son and Cracked His Skull: ‘I’m in an Emotionally Bad Place’

Eva Amurri Martino is not staying silent about her concerns that she may be suffering from depression.

In a blog post shared on her website HappilyEvaAfter.com, the mother of two — daughter Marlowe Mae, 2, and son Major James, 3 months — opened up about her difficult end to the year.

“A couple of days after Thanksgiving, our Night Nurse fell asleep while holding Major and dropped him, and he cracked his head on the hardwood floor,” Amurri Martino, 31, said. “Kyle and I were sleeping at the time and were awoken by the sound of his head hitting the floor, and then hysterical piercing screams. He suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on his brain, and was transported by ambulance to Yale Medical Center where I spent two harrowing days with him to receive emergency care and further testing. To say these were the most traumatic and anxious two days of my life is an understatement.”

Susan Sarandon‘s daughter shares Major and Marlowe with husband and 36 Hours host Kyle Martino. And while her harrowing experience was terribly traumatic, she said she’s lucky her son was not seriously injured.

“But here’s the good part: by the grace of all of his many angels, and every God one cares to pray to, MAJOR IS FINE. Completely fine,” she wrote. “He has been healing well, hitting milestones, cooing, smiling, and generally showing us that he is and will be ok as he grows and develops.”

Amurri Martino also expressed concern about telling the world her story, and feared people might be judgmental of her for not taking care of her son during the night.

“Let me tell you– the guilt I bore in the days and weeks after this accident was more intense and more damaging than anything I would wish upon my worst enemy,” she said. “I wept in the hospital, telling anyone who would listen that it should have been me. That I was to blame.”

“And even though I finally made peace with the fact that this freak accident could not have been avoided by me, it has continued to effect me to my core and in all aspects of my daily life.”

But Amurri Martino assured readers that she can no longer handle anyone but herself taking care of her children.

“It’s nearly impossible for me to trust anyone but myself to take care of Major now,” she wrote, adding that she no longer has help during the night and takes care of her son on her own. “Hearing Major cry hard immediately triggers my memories of the moments after the accident and instigates an immediate panic attack– my heart races and tears spring to my eyes.

She went on to say that she sometimes gets dizzy spells, and often feels overwhelmed and nauseous. Her appetite “has decreased to nothing” and she has been having a difficult time sleeping. She said she realized she was “not okay” when her daughter Marlowe fell while they were at a playground.

“Within ten minutes she was totally fine and normal– but I stood there while Kyle held me, sobbing and shaking, while my scared two year old watched,” she recalled. “I think I need to take some things off of my plate. It’s time to really face this all and find a solution.”

Amurri Martino added that she believes she is dealing with “some form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, possibly linked to some form of Postpartum Depression.” She also said she is seeking help from a therapist to deal with the trauma.

“I have somehow retained a lot of optimism and humor through these challenges, and there have been many moments in the past month where I have found silver linings in the day– but the storm under the surface has been brewing to a point that I can no longer ignore.”

And for her New Year’s resolution, Amurri Martino wrote that she hopes for a more smooth year overall.

“With open arms, I welcome 2017 as the year I learn to forgive a little deeper, to let go a little more easily, to accept some things I cannot change, and to love myself a lot more unconditionally.”

These Two Power Sisters Helped Save the Day (and Night) in 2016

2016-12-30-1483124430-1464972-AriannaandAgapiphotocreditJoshRothstein.jpg

Do you feel like you’re stumbling to the finish line of 2016? Someone wondered via Twitter whether Quentin Tarantino was the director of this year. Yup, that about sums it up. The countdown to 2017 has started early for many who are ready to put the year to rest. Good riddance, 2016!

We’ve been clobbered with bad news at every turn. The “if it bleeds, it leads” mantra of mainstream media doesn’t do us any favors. The approach is reminiscent of my Nana’s “guess who just died” phone calls.

Day and night, our anxieties are ramped up by headlines of doom and gloom.

We wonder why we’re such a sleep deprived, numbed out, over stimulated collective.

Like many people across time and space, there’s been a lot to contend with. There are massive problems wreaking havoc. The polarized election and aftermath, shaky economies, refugee crises, terror attacks, Brexit, nuclear threats, natural disasters, and even the sleuth of celebrity deaths have hit plenty of nerves.

The grave problems cannot be solved in five simple steps, and aren’t likely to disappear when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, either.

It will take a lot of will to learn how to take better care of ourselves, and one another in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead of us.

Luckily, in the midst of all the chaos, 2016 delivered a powerful dose of sisterly wisdom to help us with this. One telling us to “wake up”, the other: “get to sleep”.

2016-12-30-1483124718-5543318-alarmclock1193291_640.jpg

You’d think the messages are contradictory, but really they are complementary. Agapi Stassinopoulos and her sister Arianna Huffington’s are modern Greek Goddesses amongst us–they’ve both overcome odds and spent their lives tirelessly working to change damaging paradigms. Most recently, their Thrive Global initiative delivers workshops to help address the significant burnout and stress crises threatening our wellbeing and sustainability.

This year, they’ve each delivered books emphasizing self-care at a time when we really need it. To help save the day (and night), their sage advice help us finesse the light and dark with greater ease.

Agapi’s new book, Wake Up to the Joy of You, debuted just two days after Christmas. It’s daily dose of meditation practices can rein in even the most unruly, distracted brains. She teaches how to awaken to greater presence, self-compassion and renew a sense of purposeful, zestful living. When you read it, it’s like she’s sitting with you, coaching you to abandon worry, and make health a priority. She’s the ultimate storyteller and guide.

Arianna’s The Sleep Revolution was released in April, urging more sane and scientifically grounded sleep practices. After her own dangerous bout of stress-induced burnout, she has become known as a “sleep evangelist”. She’s so deeply convinced of the need for change, she left her role as editor-in-chief at the Huffington Post to put all hands on deck towards Thrive.

Agapi and Arianna’s leadership have sparked conversations across the world, helping people rethink archaic work habits and policies that leave us sleep and emotionally deprived, and at greater risk for physical and mental health problems.

2016 is infamous for good reason. Our challenges won’t disappear when the ball drops. But, the wisdom from these generous thought leader sisters help us learn to simultaneously awaken and rest, so that we can meet 2017 with new resolve.

Thank you, Agapi and Arianna.

Happy new year, all.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Creator Lorne Michaels Reveals His Big Rule About Comedy

Everyone’s got an opinion about what’s funny (or, perhaps more vocally, what’s not). For as subjective as comedy is, however, making countless people laugh is serious business for “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels. After decades at the helm of the skit-based series, Michaels told “Oprah’s Master Class” that he subscribes to a particular rule that helps him stay on track.

“I kind of have a rule that anybody who talks about comedy for longer than a minute-and-a-half and isn’t funny probably shouldn’t be listened to,” he says.

High-brow comedy, low-brow comedy ― Michaels enjoys it all, although explaining exactly what makes something funny can be a complicated undertaking. “It’s one of those things like pornography: You know it when you see it,” Michaels says.

Why people enjoy comedy in general, though, is a little easier to articulate.

“Comedy’s got a little bit of anarchy in it, and that’s the appealing part,” Michaels says. “And there’s freedom in it, and that’s also something we connect to.”

From a performance perspective, Michaels adds that the top comedians seem to benefit three particular elements that are crucial to comedic success.

“Talent plus luck plus discipline ― those seem to be the three things that I think you need to make it happen,” he says. “Doesn’t mean it will happen… I think you need all three, though.”

Another SNL reflection:

Lorne Michaels on what would happen to “Saturday Night Live” if he left

M. Night Shyamalan recently premiered his newest film, the multiple personality tale Split, at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles a few months ahead of the thriller’s January, 2017, release date. The picture was welcomed with a round of applause from the crowd in the packed Chinese Theatre, and those in attendance at the screening were then treated to a late-night (or early morning) Q&A with Shyamalan and a number of the film’s cast members as well, including James McAvoy, Anya Taylor Joy, Betty Buckley, and producer Jason Blum. There, in front of an audience of people buzzing with questions from the film, they all provided some interesting insight into the backstory of Split and what it was like making the stylish thriller.

I Was There: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Election Night Party — Without the Guest of Honor

They arrived wearing their red, white, and Hillary Clinton finest: sweaters with their candidate’s name woven into the nap, custom painted “Nasty Woman” leather jackets, yards of sequins that reflected the excitement felt all around. The supporters who came to New York City’s Javits Convention Center were ready for a party on Election Night.

Unfortunately, the party never happened.

Actress Debra Messing had on comfy-looking bright red sneakers — she was in it for the long haul. Scores of young women wore “staff” badges — though many of them were volunteers. Two little girls showed up with their family wearing “Madam President” buttons and with their faces painted red and blue; bravehearts indeed.

With some early Tuesday predictors estimating that Clinton had upwards of an 85 percent chance to become the first female U.S. President, it seemed likely there was an equal chance of showers from the confetti cannons stationed on either side of the main floor where the Democratic candidate was expected to speak.

Two days earlier, the venue was mostly quiet, save for some campaign staff handing out press credentials. I showed up late in the afternoon on Sunday, and with the shift to daylight savings time (really? An extra hour of this election?) the windowed convention center near the Hudson River was aglow in the sunset. It was impossible to miss the symbolism: That was some big glass ceiling.

By 6 p.m. on Tuesday, blocks of 11th Avenue were cordoned off by police and filled with Clinton fans who would be treated to a show by Katy Perry, and speeches from local Democrats. In between acts, election returns came up on the big screens stationed around the space and outdoors. Connecticut goes for Clinton: Cheers! New Mexico: Cheers!

Having taken to heart the “Don’t boo—vote!” directive from President Obama, there was little in the way of jeering when Donald Trump voters turned a state red; instead it just got quiet. Kentucky. Georgia. Indiana. No big deal, people reminded one another, those are usually Republican states. Here, let’s take a selfie with Mayor Bill DeBlasio in the background.

Then Virginia, Tim Kaine’s home state, was teetering. (It eventually went blue.) And Florida. And people began having the Florida flashbacks: “It reminds me a lot of Gore-Bush,” said a woman from the Virgin Islands. “We all went to bed that night thinking Gore had won and woke up and Bush had won. So I’m not giving up hope.”

Her friend, wearing a ‘HillYeah’ button on her hat, added, “I think we thought she would have been ahead more at this stage.”

Small groups gathered around the TV monitors in the basement cafeteria. There was a run on pasta and beer.

“It is definitely nerve-wracking,” said a supporter from Connecticut, smiling insistently. Moments before she had told me, “The energy is fantastic,” and she seemed to be sticking to that. Her friend wasn’t so sure. Maybe they should think about driving home? “I want to see history being made and I’m afraid if I leave I’ll regret it if she does win.”

The night wore on. The cafeteria closed. The beer bottles emptied, the starchy comfort food consumed. The TV monitors continued to bleed red. The young women volunteers were rotating in and out of the ladies’ room, eyes red.

The faithful were trying to hold on to hope, but it wasn’t easy.

A New York supporter whose daughter was about the age of these campaign workers told me, “My heart is hanging on every word here. I’m on the verge of tears. I’m so upset right now. I have a 20-year-old daughter in college, and I just feel if he gets to be president … It’s all over. It’s just … nothing.”

A rumor circulated after midnight that the venue had to be cleared out by 2 a.m. Suddenly it was after 1 a.m., and the dais remained empty. The crowds were still, well, crowded. And they did what crowds do: They huddled, goofed for the cameras when turned on them, and sang along to the piped-in music.

By 1:30 a.m. or so, two things happened: we began to hear that Secretary Clinton would not speak tonight, but instead would send campaign chairman John Podesta, as at least three states were still too close to call.

The PA system blared what is usually a party-pleaser: Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” On the screen the crowd saw itself reflected, and gamely joined in with Steve Perry’s vocals: “Don’t stop believing, hold on to that fe-eee-lin’. ” Was anyone else thinking about what these words mean? Did anyone else feel that this was as final as the Sopranos finale that had used the song before cutting to black?

Though the big screens, still on closed circuit, didn’t announce it in the moment, Pennsylvania was called for Trump, effectively giving him the win. Podesta took the stage, told us all to go home and get some sleep. There would be more in the morning.

And there was: About eight hours later, the candidate finally spoke. But the party was over, and her supporters — many more than had been at that windowed convention center — gathered in our shared virtual space to hear the first woman to win the popular vote for United States president offer her apologies for not winning the election. “This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for,” said Sec. Clinton. “And I’m sorry we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country.”

No, this was not the outcome that those who had traveled to the Javits Center had wanted.

I listened to the worries, and tears, and frustrations of supporters as they filed out into the New York City night, past a street vendor with a keen market sense selling Hillary T-shirts marked down to $ 5. I didn’t hear anyone asking for their candidate’s apology. There were practical matters to attend to: Would Uber be able to get through the police barricades? Is the subway okay to take at 3 a.m.?

I took a last look at the building, still lit, and that glass ceiling still frustratingly untouched.

A Night at the Nutcracker Suite

A Night at the Nutcracker Suite

Brett Davidson writes erotic stories of bound and punished women and tied and tormented men. Once inspired by a bit of real life, his stories are quite popular. But, when his inspiration dies, life beyond fiction dies with her. Now, he spends his time on-line, chatting with the fetish crowd while remaining a recluse in real life – his stories even more works of fiction than before. That is until Mistress Shelby entices him out of his shell with the promise of a trade. But when she finally gets him alone, bound and helpless in a fancy suite in one of Dallas’ fanciest hotel, he finds out the CBT fantasy he thought they were playing out isn’t his. Instead, it is hers, and the story of the night in the Nutcracker Suite she’s suggested he write will be based far more on reality than anything he’s ever written before.(Editor’s Note: This work contains graphic language and sometimes extreme sexual depictions of consensual male bondage and sadomasochism. It is intended for mature audiences only and is not suitable for persons under eighteen years of age.)

WALK THE WALK OF ETERNAL NIGHT WALKERSIN ETERNAL NIGHT, SHE WAKESBeside the fire, in the comforting warmth of her home, Secret listens as Kane tells her not of his early history as a vampire, but that of the early history of vampires. There are vampires of mixed human ancestry who live and walk during the day, and whose true identity does not emerge until later in life. And Secret realizes as she listens that her recent dizzy spells, craving for rare steak, blood test results that confuse doctors, and her unique psychic capacity to detect vampires are evidence of secrets to a hidden, inborn nature. Earlier, hearing her tell stories of her orphaned childhood, Kane begins to connect the dots. She must not return to the doctor’s office because her blood work is a secret unfit for the narrow confines of modern medicine. And as he realizes what she really is, he understands why he cannot fight being drawn to her the moment he first sensed her. She is his mate. Watch Wild Ponies Premiere Video for ‘Night We Never Met’ Prior to May 13 Album Release

Mark your calendar for Friday, May 13, because that’s when you can purchase your very own copy of Wild Ponies new album, “Radiant” out on No Evil Records. To tide you over, here is the exclusive premiere of the video for the hauntingly beautiful, “The Night We Never Met,” from the new album.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsqgCXl8Dzo&feature=youtu.be

Telisha says, “The idea of a video of me in a slip would’ve terrified me a year ago, but about five months ago, I started taking burlesque dancing lessons, and my opinions of my body have completely changed. It’s my body, and it’s carried me through some incredibly beautiful and traumatizing moments. There’s a power in me and my body that didn’t recognize and appreciate before. Without my burlesque experiences and community, I don’t think I would have been able to lay confidently on a bed in the middle of a snowy field in Kentucky on a 20-degree night.”

While I found the whole album to be brilliant, if you’re not sold on “The Night We Never Met,” buy it for the single, “Love Is Not A Sin,” alone. Trust me on this one.

Here’s a snippet of a verse: “It doesn’t matter who you love, when two lovers find each other, I’d say it’s sanctioned from above …”

The tune was written long before North Carolina’s H.B.2 and similar legislation was recently enacted, but it addresses the issue head on in Wild Ponies unique rootsy, rock and oh-so eloquent way. Listen for yourself here.

Natives Doug and Telisha Williams came full circle on Saturday night for an album’s release party at The Rives Theatre in downtown Martinsville, Virginia. If you missed it, you can hear the band perform at Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival on May 26-29 in nearby Axton, Virginia. Warning: Ticket prices go up May 1 and are going fast.

“My mom started hosting house concerts in early 2001 in her basement,” Doug explains. “She had Hayes Carll and The Green Cards as backup bands along with a bunch of others. We then helped start an organization called Artisan Cafe in town.”

That Artisan Cafe eventually merged with another group to form ARTS at The Rives Theatre, where the couple played on Saturday to an appreciative hometown crowd including parents, cousins and longtime friends. “We knew family that owned The Rives and we helped start the nonprofit ARTS at The Rives before we moved to East Nashville. We stayed for a long time trying to turn it around and make it an artisitic place.

“We’re thrilled with how it’s going. They are doing just an awesome job and we’re excited to have our album release party there.”

The Americana, folk, alt-country group also includes Megan Jane and Fats Kaplin who produce a sound on the album that seems to radiate from a much larger, fuller band.

“Radiant” is the sophomore album for Wild Ponies, formerly known as Doug and Telisha Williams. They decided to change the name of the group because it was more than just the husband-and-wife duo, who have been playing together since high school. Their longtime collaboration as musical partners — Doug on guitar and Telisha on stand-up bass — and life partners is apparent on stage and they say translates into a telepathy that other bands may not have.

“We changed over to Wild Ponies with the last record, ‘Things That Used to Shine,’ ” Telisha explained in a recent phone interview. “When you hear two names, it’s what you envision, pretty folk, acoustic and kind of not how our music was going.”

Indeed. “Born With a Broken Heart” and “Unplug the Machine” from “Radiant” are perfect examples of the band’s evolution to a harder-edge sound as well as “Trigger” from the aforementioned album. Doug added, “We felt like things are shifting and changing and even as a duo it didn’t accurately describe who we were. Wild Ponies shifted a little more electric.”

Telisha adds that she and Doug believe in building a creative community and participating in a creative community. “I feel like this is such a record of collaboration ,” she said, adding they co-write with friends on a regular basis.

One of the collaborations they are most excited about is the title track they co-wrote with 12-year-old Mariah Moore, whom the Williamses met through volunteering with the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Words & Music program.

“I have to admit, there’s probably a little defiance in all of this,” Telisha said in release. “Bucking the way things ‘should’ be done. We just want to make good art, and that usually means bending some rules.”

“Tower and the Wheel,” partly inspired by an old tree on Doug’s grandparents’ farm, signifies another theme — celebrating the past, with a few modern twists. The song includes details about the tree that’s stood for generations on the family farm, but the B-sections were inspired by tarot cards. I personally hear shades of Nanci Griffith in Telisha’s voice on this particular track.

“I’ve known that tree my whole life. It knew my mom and my grandparents even way back before that. That tree was really old before anyone in my family owned the farm. But she’s still there, strong as ever,” Doug said. “It’s where we’d tie the horses, and where we’d pull the porch chairs around in the shade and the dirt and play songs, where Telisha and I cut our wedding cake.”

But when Doug and Telisha were writing the chorus sections of the song, they took an unconventional approach “Nothing we were trying was working, so we laid out eight Tarot cards and wrote all those eight parts right from the way they fell. They lined up perfectly between our verses and finished the story for us.”

For Doug, “Radiant” is about reaching out from within, looking at the world around, relating to it, and trying to find some empathy. For Telisha, it’s also about standing still, tall, and true.

“Listening to our last record, I hear the struggle. I hear the transition of a victim pushing, pulling, letting go, standing up, and shouting,” she said. “This record is more stable and secure in some ways but raw and exploratory in others. There’s an acceptance and love for myself. I’m feeling confident in my own skin. A skin that’s full of battle scars and flaws, but that I’ve learned to love and appreciate, maybe for first time.”

There’s no slowing down Wild Ponies it appears. Doug says this summer the band plans to make an all-acoustic record at his grandfather’s farm in Galax, Virginia.

“My grandfather played with old-time players from Galax and around that area, so we’re going to bring some of our Nashville friends and hopefully throw them together with some guys from Galax right after the Old Fiddlers’ Convention.”

Beauty Like the Night

Beauty Like the Night

Beauty is like the night, fleeting and hard to hold, a truth the forbidding Lord Treyhern is about to discover. Let the opulence of Liz Carlyle’s prose immerse you in the beauty of England while plunging you into the midst of the outrageous Rutledge family, where scandal is served up like a soup course and dangerous secrets are everywhere. The daughter of London’s wickedest widow, Helene de Severs has struggled to overcome her heritage. Renowned within Europe’s emerging psychiatric field, Helene has a gift for healing children. When fate sends her back to England, the country she left in disgrace, Helene is confident she has learned to govern her own reckless emotions. Ruthlessly, Treyhern has dragged his notorious family from the brink of ruin. But a disastrous marriage has left him with a traumatized child, and his rebellious brother is just one step ahead of the bailiffs. When his dissolute father drops dead while debauching the governess, Treyhern’s infamous temper is truly tested. But the forceful earl means to straighten everyone out – as soon as he has hired a reputable governess. Yet the moment she steps from his carriage, Treyhern’s cold reserve is melted by a rush of desire he had long thought dead. With her elegant clothing and mountain of luggage, the woman is not who he expected. Or is she? Sometimes the workings of the mind are as dangerous as those of the heart. And soon, danger is truly everywhere.

Kendall Jenner And Her Shoes Had A Rough Night At The MTV Movie Awards

Does it ever take a two-person team to get your shoes on before a big night out? Probably not, but if you’re Kendall Jenner, it’s just par for the course.

On Saturday, the supermodel stepped onto the red carpet for the MTV Movie Awards (which air Sunday) in a black lace-up dress and some pretty badass DSquared2 sandals.

While Jenner’s footwear looked great, it did cause a series of problems throughout the night. Not only did it take a few assistants to help her get into the shoes, but later on, Jenner’s BFF, Gigi Hadid, took to Snapchat to show how the model’s laces were getting all tangled as the duo tried to get on the elevator.

The night ended with a Snapchat from Kendall, complaining that it was going to take her an hour to get the shoes off. #Fashun, right?
