Nina Dobrev Says It Was Her First Time Being a Bridesmaid at Julianne Hough’s Wedding

It’s been 10 days since Julianne Hough‘s romantic outdoor wedding on Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to NHL star Brooks Laich, but the world still can’t get enough of the details Dancing With The Stars judge’s picturesque (and Pinterest-perfect) nuptials. So when PeopleStyle got to sit down with Reebok’s newest ambassador Nina Dobrev — who is one of Hough’s best friends and was a bridesmaid for the wedding — we had to get the inside scoop about what being in the wedding party was like.

But Dobrev says she didn’t have much to compare her experience as Hough’s bridesmaid to…because she’s actually never been one before!

“Well I have to tell you, it was my first ever bridesmaid experience I ever had,” the actress tells PeopleStyle. “Julianne and Brooks popped my cherry — in a way! ” Dobrev hasn’t stopped raving about the entire wedding weekend on social media, and has a feeling any of her future experiences as a bridesmaid won’t be anywhere near as great. “It is only downhill from here,” she says.

The star, who wore a pastel pink Marchesa bridesmaid dress, says she was one of the lucky few who knew what (two!) dresses her best friend would be wearing on the big day. “I was at all of her fittings at Marchesa and saw her every step of the way when they were designing it,” Dobrev says. “I got to be a big part of that as a spectator.”

When it came to the wedding ceremony and reception, the 28-year-old star (who recently went public with her new boyfriend Glen Powell) tips her hat off to event planner Troy Williams of Simply Troy Lifestyle + Event, who organized every detail of the weekend affair.

New Nina Simone Documentary Recalls Past Struggles While Echoing Present

While watching “What Happened, Miss Simone?” — a new documentary about the legendary singer-songwriter Nina Simone — it’s almost impossible not to think about two attacks on black churches that happened 52 years apart.

The first attack, in Birmingham, Alabama, inspired Simone to join the burgeoning civil rights movement of the 1960s. The latter, in Charleston, South Carolina, happened just last week.

In the wake of the latest attack, the Netflix documentary may help shed light on how art like Simone’s can channel anger, fear and frustration about social ills like racism and oppression.

Houses of worship were crucial to Simone’s development as an artist and an activist. As a child in Tryon, North Carolina, Simone played the piano at her local church. During one of her performances, her parents were told to move to the back of the church hall; she said she wouldn’t play until her parents were allowed to move back to the front. But decades later, Simone would say she had “stopped believing in prayer” after racist acts kept being committed against those fighting for civil rights.

Simone’s transformation as an artist came in the wake of the bombing in Birmingham that killed four black girls. “That did it,” Simone says in the film, much of which is narrated in her own voice. While she had made a name for herself with renditions of tunes like “I Loves You, Porgy,” her career changed profoundly after she started to sing about what was happening around her.

“How can you be an artist and not reflect the times?” Simone asked.

Following the Birmingham bombing and the assassination of black civil rights activist Medgar Evers in Mississippi, Simone wrote the song “Mississippi Goddam.” In a recording of a concert she gave at New York City’s Carnegie Hall, Simone calls the song a “show tune, but the show hasn’t been written for it yet.” What was subversive about her performance was that she lulled the the majority-white audience at the concert hall into thinking the song would be jaunty and non-political. But her audience went silent as she told them: “You’re all gonna die and die like flies.” She meant every word of it, she told them.

“Lord have mercy on this land of mine / We all gonna get it in due time / I don’t belong here / I don’t belong there / I’ve even stopped believing in prayer,” she sang. “You keep on saying, ‘Go slow!’ / But that’s just the trouble / ‘Do it slow’ / Desegregation / ‘Do it slow’ / Mass participation / ‘Do it slow’ / Reunification / ‘Do it slow’ / Do things gradually / ‘Do it slow’ / But bring more tragedy / ‘Do it slow.'”

Fifty years ago, Simone performed “Mississippi Goddam” for the thousands of civil rights marchers who walked from Selma, Alabama, to the state capitol in Montgomery. That march was marked by violent state troopers blocking the participants’ progress at the Edmund Pettus bridge, illustrating one of Simone’s arguments in her song: Gradually trying to bring about equality only concedes to the demands of the oppressors.

And yet, as the film shows, there was a danger for Simone in being perceived as too controversial. She attributed a stall in her career to “Mississippi Goddam,” which was boycotted by a number of Southern states.

Despite the backlash to her more confrontational music, Simone still “thought we should get our rights by any means possible,” as she explains in the film. She was in favor of direct action and became affiliated with the black power movement, defiantly telling Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when she met him at the Selma march that she wasn’t non-violent.

Simone says she felt free on stage. But she also said that to her, freedom meant living without fear. (“I think every day’s gonna be my last,” she sang.) What’s devastating about the documentary in light of the Charleston shooting is its reminder that African Americans have yet to realize that freedom from fear, decades after Simone voiced a desire for it.

“We can’t afford any more losses,” Simone says in the film. “They’re killing us one by one.”

At the Sundance film festival in January, the film’s director, Liz Garbus, acknowledged the resonance of the documentary in comments referring to mass protests across the nation over police killings of unarmed African Americans.

“If we had voices like Nina Simone’s today, speaking the pain and the passion of the movement that’s been building, I think, on the streets in the past six months…” Garbus said, “I think we can all see the place of these songs today.”

“What Happened, Miss Simone?” will be available on Netflix Friday. Watch a trailer for the documentary here.

Zoe Saldana On Nina Simone Criticism: ‘I Didn’t Think I Was Right For The Part’

The topic of race and casting in Hollywood resurfaced in the weeks since Entertainment Weekly published an essay by actor Michael B. Jordan on May 22.

In the essay, Jordan wrote about breaking down barriers with his role as the Human Torch, a character originally written as white with blue eyes and blond hair, in the forthcoming “Fantastic Four” film.

Jordan’s commentary prompted a response from actress Zoe Saldana, who supported the star’s thoughts in a Facebook post. In the post, Saldana posed a question to critics who were against Jordan playing the role.

If we question why Michael has been cast to play the Human Torch in Fantastic Four then we must also question why Elizabeth Taylor played Cleopatra, why Angelina Jolie played Mariane Pearl in a Mighty Heart, why Laurence Olivier played Othello, Burt Lancaster in Apache, and the list goes on….and on….

Saldana has faced similar criticism herself. In reaction to her casting as Nina Simone in the upcoming biopic “Nina,” some fans and critics suggested the actress was too light-skinned to portray the role.

The 36-year-old added to previous comments on the backlash this week in the July issue of InStyle magazine.

“I didn’t think I was right for the part, and I know a lot of people will agree, but then again, I don’t think Elizabeth Taylor was right for Cleopatra either,” she said in the interview. “An artist is colorless, genderless… It’s more complex than just ‘Oh, you chose the Halle Berry look-alike to play a dark, strikingly beautiful, iconic black woman.’ The truth is, they chose an artist who was willing to sacrifice herself. We needed to tell her story because she deserves it.”

For more of Zoe Saldana’s interview, check out the July 2015 issue of InStyle one it hits newsstands on June 15.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover 2014: Chrissy Teigen, Lily Aldridge AND Nina Agdal Strip Down!

This year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue has finally been revealed — and there is not one, not two, but THREE cover girls! The stars of the highly anticipated 50th anniversary issue will also be announced on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Thursday night.

The cover, which the magazine is calling “the happiest cover in swimsuit history,” features Chrissy Teigen, Lily Aldridge and Nina Agdal scantily clad in just neon bikini bottoms. The very fitting theme of the 50th anniversary issue is “Past, Present and Future.” People Magazine reports that a trio has not appeared on the cover since 1994.

Teigen, who made her debut in 2010 as “Rookie of The Year” is the veteran of the group, with Agdal following two years later and Aldridge making her first appearance this year. Covering the Swimsuit Issue can catapult a model’s career — and has a long-standing reputation for empowering the women who appear in the issue. Teigen has been known to praise them for their minimal use of Photoshop. Add that to the fact that the three women look absolutely gorgeous, and it’s really no surprise they were chosen as a trio.

The models join a long list of beautiful women (Christie Brinkley and Tyra Banks, to name a few) who have had the honor of covering the magazine, and it’s completely well deserved. We’ll have to wait until Feb. 18 to see the entire spread, but for now, take a look at the cover below and on the Sports Illustrated Swim Daily blog and let us know what you think!
