The Cons and Pros of Shrunken NYFW: Men’s

Good riddance July. Now American men’s designers can only hope things get better next June.
Todd Snyder wrapped up the spring 2019 edition of New York Fashion Week: Men’s on Wednesday night with an upbeat show that embraced America — and proved to be one of the handful of shows that could legitimately compete with those in London, Florence, Milan or Paris. Otherwise, the three-day affair continued to be devoid of most of American fashion’s major names and was a haphazard mix of shows and presentations that often lacked energy, generated little buzz and continued to raise questions over where New York fits into the men’s calendar.
But the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the organizer, is hoping to resuscitate things next summer when it moves the show dates to align with women’s resort in early June — before the London men’s shows start.
Holding the men’s and women’s shows at the same time worked well for the men’s brands in February when the CFDA staged a successful 10-day dual-gender fashion week, with the men’s-only or men’s-heavy brands kicking off the week. That’s the plan for this coming February as well.
And although the June women’s resort shows are not as established as

Public School to Participate in NYFW: Men’s

Public School will be participating in New York Fashion Week: Men’s — but exactly what the brand is planning to do is being kept under wraps.
On Friday, the New York-based men’s and women’s label founded by Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne sent out an invite to an event Wednesday night in TriBeCa. The invitation, which also had the branding for Moët & Chandon, read: “A piece of ground that belonged to them, on which they could plant their feet, permanency.” The designers had created special bottles for the spirits brand that were unveiled during New York Fashion Week last September.
A spokesman for the company declined to provide further details on Wednesday’s event.
In December, the designers said they would be taking a break from showing their collection during NYFW in February as “the company is in the midst of stepping away from the traditional industry format and launching a new direct-to-consumer concept.” The company said details would be shared in advance of the launch later this year and that the brand would be “refining” its product assortment, “delivery cadence,” and restructuring it organization.
According to retailers who had carried the line, the final Public School wholesale collection was shipped for spring.

Cartoon Network to Sponsor NYFW: Men’s

The Council of Fashion Designers of America is forging a relationship with Cartoon Network.
The network will provide support for the shows and the CFDA connected the company with Ryohei Kawanishi of Landlord, who will design a capsule collection based on “Adventure Time,” a popular animated series.
Instead of just producing a one-off capsule collection, Kawanishi said he has also integrated themes from the series into his main line, which will show during NYFW: Men’s on July 9.
“I wanted to make a mental connection with what’s going on in the cartoons,” said Kawanishi, who usually designs based on distinct themes ranging from Rastafarianism to southern hip-hop.
Cartoon Network has played in the fashion space before via collaborations with brands including Moschino, Champion and Rook, but Pete Yoder, vice president of Cartoon Network Enterprises, North America, said these collaborations have become a bigger focus for the company, which is why it has partnered with the CFDA.
“It’s a huge priority for us because we want to address our fan base with the more traditional licensed product that’s more accessible, but we also want to give our super fans something special that they can call their own,” Yoder said. “Partnering with the CFDA is a great way to gain access to this

Victoria Beckham Takes Top Spot in Social Engagement During NYFW

Victoria Beckham, Sherri Hill, Adidas Originals, Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren were the top five brands when it came to social engagement scores during New York Fashion Week.
The next five were Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Alexander Wang, Carolina Herrera and Christian Siriano, according to ListenFirst, a leading social analytics firm. ListenFirst’s social engagement score is based on the volume of social post engagements, fan growth and brand mentions across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, YouTube and Google from Feb. 8 to Feb. 14.
Overall, “NYFW fall/winter 2018” was mentioned 478,000 times during that time frame, down 31 percent from the spring shows in September. Although NYFW was on the whole less buzzed-about this season, participating brands were able to keep their own engagement high, according to Miranda McWeeney, fashion and beauty industry lead at ListenFirst.
“Brands that followed the celebrity strategy, such as Victoria Beckham, won fashion week from a social engagement perspective, but the actions were unrelated to the collections. On the other hand, brands that struggled to keep pace this season had a high focus on the collections themselves — engagement with posts of this kind have a potentially higher value for the brand, but generate far less engagement,” said McWeeney.

PETA’s ‘Fashion Police’ Write Tickets for Fur-Clad Pedestrians as NYFW Wraps Up

FUR’S FIRST OFFENSE: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals tried to leave their own stamp on New York Fashion Week on Wednesday afternoon.
Looking to crack down on showgoers wearing animal skins, the animal rights group recruited two supporters to pose as “fashion police” writing tickets for unsuspecting passersby. A delayed noontime start wasn’t the only glitch. Most of the runway shows were finished throughout the city, never mind at the corner of West Houston and Washington Street where their patrol began. (A utility worker off to work did look very Calvin Klein-esque in a reflective jacket though.)
While handling some last-minute adjustments to her fellow officer-for-an-hour’s costume, Mary Ann Persad said her real job is in finance. She had taken the day off to support PETA. Todd Elkins, a model represented by Major and a bartender for catered events, had a more flexible schedule to work with. Practicing her lines for a PETA photographer, Persad said, “It’s New York Fashion Week and the fashion police are out. If you’re wearing any kind of animal garment — fur, wool, leather, down — you might get a ticket.”
Aside from a few why-are-you-here type questions, most of the passersby waved off the “tickets”

Project Elevates Partnership With NYFW: Men’s

Project continued to make its presence known at New York Fashion Week: Men’s by hosting a presentation for Michael Bastian, W.R.K., Faherty and M. Singer, four brands that often show within the Tents, the designer section of the trade show.
Project also hosted several other labels during the morning and afternoon sessions of New York Men’s Day.
Tommy Fazio, men’s fashion director of UBM Fashion, who hand-selected each brand, said this is the latest initiative in the company’s move to support American talent. It’s also an evolution of UBM Fashion’s new partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America that promotes the growth of emerging talent and the fashion industry as a whole.
“We are thrilled to have the platform outside of the trade-show floor in New York to champion men’s wear talent who represent the best of American designers. Having had the privilege of working with each designer at Project, we are excited to assist in presenting their fall 2018 collections by supporting CFDA’s NYFW: Men’s and NYMD,” Fazio said.

Nicole Miller Partners With RevelGlam for NYFW

RevelGlam, a new company that applies artificial intelligence and image recognition to fashion forecasting, has partnered with Nicole Miller for NYFW. The designer will pilot the fashion-tech company’s software: photos from the brand’s NYFW show will be used to predict the next wave of fashion trends.
RevelGlam is a “style-forecasting solution that helps designers, retailers and fashion industry professionals stay ahead of trends and gain an artificially intelligent edge over competition,” the company says. It was cofounded by Steve Eichner, veteran fashion and celebrity photographer, and Daniela Kirsch, a full-stack developer from Berlin.

“Our platform creates a new layer of value from celebrity and event photography, Eichner says. “With a smart analysis of today’s trendsetters, you can build the business of tomorrow.”

RevelGlam uses insights from celebrity sightings, runway shows, influencer activities and consumer behavior through image recognition technology and cognitive computing, which will allow brands and retailers to predict trends and gauge demand.
“RevelGlam gives us a clear, measurable look into the future,” says Bud Konheim, chief executive officer of Nicole Miller. “The world is increasingly dependent upon data-optimized decision making, and the fashion industry must keep pace.”

Bottega Veneta to Show During NYFW Fall 2018

The CFDA posted the preliminary calendar for New York Fashion Week’s fall 2018 lineup, during which the men’s shows will abut the women’s shows, with the full dates spanning Feb. 5 to 14. One of the newsiest additions to the schedule is Bottega Veneta, which will hold a coed show Feb. 9. Typically the show is held in Milan. There will be no Ralph Lauren field trips this season. He’s back in a morning slot Feb. 12 with two shows planned at 11 a.m. and noon. Calvin Klein will no longer be an opening act. Since Raf Simons is closing the men’s program on Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m., Calvin Klein has moved its coed show to Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. Narciso Rodriguez is also back on the schedule, Feb. 8 at 9 a.m., after taking a hiatus last season to do private showroom appointments, as is Boss women’s, which is slated for Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. Tom Ford is still closing the first day of the women’s program Feb. 8 at 8 p.m., and Marc Jacobs is closing the whole shebang on Valentine’s Day at 6 p.m. No word on Yeezy or Fenty Puma by Rihanna yet.

Eugenia Kim Marks 20th Anniversary With First NYFW Presentation

Accessories veteran Eugenia Kim marked her brand’s 20th anniversary as a novice at New York Fashion Week.
The brand held its first fashion week presentation at Pier 59 studios on Saturday, presenting a gaggle of models dressed in high-cut swimsuits — accessorized with Eugenia Kim hats, shoes and bags.
Kim said after 20 years, it finally made sense to hold a presentation given her label’s recent expansion from solely a hat business to one that offers shoes and bags as well.
“I feel like it’s hard as an accessories brand if you are only showing things in still life — it’s hard to bring it to life. But now that we have hats and shoes and bags we can create a full look. I think it’s a moment for us to reemerge and change people’s understanding of us as an accessories brand,” the designer noted.
Kim launched shoes in 2014, while bags were introduced for spring 2017.
The designer said between 60 and 70 percent of her business is presently dedicated to hats, while the remainder is nearly evenly split between shoes and bags. She hopes that ratio will level out in coming seasons.
Kim greatly expanded her bag offering for spring — growing it from

The Tentative Official NYFW Calendar Is Here

Oh, for the days when the fashion week schedule was not breaking news, but a standard calendar that people attending the shows used for RSVPs and figuring out when they could eat dinner at a normal hour. But alas, now — especially for the spring 2018 season — it’s become a matter of who’s showing when, how late, not at all or in another country.
To that end, today the CFDA released the preliminary official New York Fashion Week schedule for spring 2018. Most of the biggest changes have already been well covered — Tom Ford is showing on Sept. 6; Joseph Altuzarra and Thom Browne have moved their shows to Paris; Narciso Rodriguez is opting for the showroom — but there are many new names in the late evening slots. Nine p.m. is the new 8 p.m. (If only 10 a.m. was the new 9 a.m., but for the most part, it’s not).
Kith NYC is showing Thursday, Sept 7 at 9 p.m., directly after the Calvin Klein show, which slid into a nighttime position after many years of daytime shows. Fenty Puma by Rihanna is at 9 p.m. on Sept. 10; the newest version of Helmut Lang, which has been

Andrew Rannells, Tommy Dorfman Enjoy a Casual Approach to NYFW: Men’s

July’s heat wave had Skylight Clarkson Sq baking on Wednesday afternoon, but the temperature couldn’t have been more appropriate for Parke & Ronen’s swimsuit-filled 20th anniversary show.
“This is my first time at [Parke & Ronen],” said Andrew Rannells. “I am a fan of their swimsuits and I’ve worn those swimsuits for a long time and I love their leisurewear. I expect they’re releasing a variety of things, so I’m looking forward to it. I can tell already that it’s a fun show and the vibe here is a little more relaxed.”
The two-time Tony nominee spent Tuesday at the Hugo Boss show, which was the “polar opposite” of what he was expecting to see this afternoon. “It was a lot of outerwear, very cool trenchcoats and leather jackets,” he said. “They had some really amazing, nautical looking things.” While some may have spent last night partying with Raf Simons, Rannells admitted he was actually at home binge-watching “Bloodline.” Ah, the joys of  Netflix in the summer. “I have two episodes left,” he said. “I decided that last night I needed to go to bed at, like, one o’clock. I was like, ‘I could muscle through, but to what end?’”
Seated nearby was Tommy

Selena Gomez Rules #NYFW: Tracking Twitter, Instagram By the Numbers

New York Fashion Week — or #NYFW, to be more specific — has a reach far beyond the more than 61,000 who shared content on Instagram or Twitter. According to numbers gathered by Pixlee, from Sept. 10 to 15, conversations using #NYFW and #NYFW15 had reached 6.6 billion people across Twitter and Instagram. Instagram posts with those hashtags garnered 37 million likes, and on Saturday alone, the conversation reached 2.1 million people. Of submitted photos, 78.4 percent were on Instagram and 21.6 percent were on Twitter. And the top engagement? That went to @selenagomez, posting about “feeling downtown chic” to Instagram from Polo Ralph Lauren. Even though she said “#imnotamodel #tryinsohard,” she obviously is doing something right; the post has 1,520,829 likes, and counting. (Fellow poster @brooklynbeckham also posted from the venue, but his likes were “only” in the hundreds of thousands.)

The Sophomores: Novice Designers Talk About Their Return to NYFW

Three designers who launched their collections at New York Fashion Week in February — Gabriela Hearst, Ji Oh and Laura Vassar and Kristopher Brock, the husband-and-wife team behind Brock Collection — discuss what they learned from their first experience and what they changed for their second act.
WWD: What was the most exciting part of planning your first NYFW presentation last season?
Gabriela Hearst: It was our launch season and we’d been conceptualizing the project for more than two years, so it had been a long journey to get there. Only a few trusted key people had seen the collection so we were very excited to finally show it.
Ji Oh: The most exciting part for me was the casting. Finding the right face and the right attitude isn’t so easy, but still very fun. When a girl comes in and tries my clothes on and looks great, nothing makes me happier.
Laura Vassar and Kristopher Brock: Seeing the world we dreamt of come together was the most exciting part. The days before our presentation were our favorite — the styling, casting, hair and makeup tests, and set design.

WWD: What was the most stressful or frustrating part?
G.H.: As the debut season was a very personal collection,
