Psycho Bunny to Open First U.S. Retail Store in Miami

Psycho Bunny is jumping into the retail fray in Miami.
The New York-based men’s brand with the slightly maniacal rabbit logo with its teeth hanging over a skull and crossbones, is opening its first store in the Aventura Mall this fall.
The brand operates two stores in Panama, two in Mexico and will open one in Bogotá, Colombia, by the end of the year. There are also 17 retail locations in Japan, including a flagship in Shibuya.
The concept is a bit unorthodox since the store will have two iterations: a 1,400-square-foot space will open as a pop-up at the beginning of November and stay in operation through the middle of January. At that point, it will be closed until the middle of March when it will reopen permanently as a 1,600-square-foot flagship.
“Because of the timing of when we signed the lease, we needed more time to [create a flagship],” said Robert Goldman, who operates the brand with Robert Godley. So to capitalize on the holiday traffic, a pop-up was created that will replicate a working artist’s studio. It is being designed by the Montreal-based architectural firm, Aedifica, which has worked with Adidas, Aldo and others.

Open from Nov. 2 to 4, it will display pieces from brands including Aubade, Chantelle, Passionata, Empreinte, Antigel, Maison Lejaby, Simone Perele and Implicite. Bloomingdale’s to Open Sean John Pop-Up Shop

Bloomingdale’s was the first retailer to sell the Sean John collection when rap entrepreneur Sean Combs launched his men’s wear line two decades ago. Now, the two companies have reconnected to celebrate the anniversary.
For the month of October, the store is converting the former David Burke restaurant space at the 59th Street flagship into a Sean John pop-up. The shop, which will have a separate entrance from the street as well as access through the men’s store, will sell a capsule collection of reworked pieces from the brand’s previous collections including the velour tracksuit, fur snorkel jackets, suede coveralls and leather track jackets.

One of the reworked velour tracksuits.

“You won’t see all baggy clothes,” said Jeff Tweedy, president of Sean John. “We’re taking iconic pieces and tuning them to current fashion.” He said the velour tracksuit, for example, hasn’t been produced for more than a decade, but is being reinvented in five colors for the shop.
Everything will be for sale but there will also be some original pieces on display in the space, Tweedy said.
“Bloomingdale’s was our original launch partner 20 years ago, so it is incredibly gratifying to come full circle with the launch of this pop-up shop,” he added. “This is truly a

Starbucks to Open First Italian Store in September

MILAN’S CUP OF JOE: Mark your calendars: Starbucks is about to make its debut in Italy, the country whose world-celebrated coffee culture in the Seventies inspired the American chain’s founder Howard Schultz.
On Sept. 6, the Seattle-based company will host an event in Milan to celebrate the opening of the first Italian Starbucks Reserve Roastery.
Occupying a 25,833-square-foot space inside a historic building that formerly housed the city’s central post office, which overlooks Piazza Cordusio near the Bourse and the Duomo cathedral, Starbucks Reserve Roastery will feature the new store concept inaugurated in Shanghai.
This includes a collaboration with Milan-based bakery group Princi, which in partnership with the American coffee maker opened its first international store in Seattle last year. The world’s biggest Starbucks Reserve Roastery will open in Chicago next year.
According to Starbucks, the opening of the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Milan will kick off a strategy aimed at bringing the coffee chain to the streets of the most important Italian cities.

Descendant of Thieves to Open First Retail Store

Men’s brand Descendant of Thieves is not afraid of all the empty storefronts on Bleecker Street and will open its first brick-and-mortar store on the beleaguered strip in November.
The shop at No. 203 is to house a 600-square-foot retail store and 1,000-square-foot showroom and office. The building has housed only two other tenants in its 100-year-plus existence: a bakery and a leather goods shop. It’s located on the east side of Sixth Avenue, near Minetta Street. Its design will be a nod to the history of the space and will include vintage furnishings and vintage-inspired fixtures.
“Descendant of Thieves is going against the grain in leading a movement to bring back the independent shops of yesteryear and reignite New York City’s retail,” said Matteo Maniatty, creative director and cofounder of the brand. “We chose the 203 Bleecker Street landmarked location because we knew this was exactly where we wanted to be — among other independently owned businesses that give Greenwich Village its unique character.”
The store will showcase a variety of programming including performances, art exhibitions and community events and will also offer 60-minute delivery within New York.

The concept — luxury basics for women and men — will debut in Caruso’s Palisades Village on Sept. 22, followed by a location in Glen Centre in the Beverly Glen neighborhood of L.A.’s westside.
The store will join Walker’s 6,500-square-foot namesake flagship in Pacific Palisades, which since the late Nineties has quietly driven what industry sources say is the highest sales-per-square-foot of any multibrand retailer in the country and the one-year-old, 12,000-square foot Newport Beach location, which includes fine art, a salon and jewelry vault. Rowing Blazers to Open Shop in Former Odin Space

Rowing Blazers is going the retail route.
The preppy brand of vintage-inspired sport coats, button-down shirts and ties will open a 2,500-square-foot store at 221 Centre Street in Manhattan on June 15. The space formerly housed the Odin store.
Rowing Blazers was created last year by Jack Carlson, a former coxswain on the U.S. national rowing team who also holds a Ph.D. in archaeology from Oxford University (a center of rowing worldwide), and is the author of “A Humorous Guide to Heraldry” and “Rowing Blazers,” a coffee-table tome about the “authentic striped, piped, trimmed and badged” jackets worn by oarsman around the world.
Since its debut, the collection of boldly patterned and brightly colored jackets has caught the attention of Millennial customers, and the brand had a successful partnership with J. Crew on a limited-edition capsule of rugby shirts.
In addition, a pop-up that the brand operated on Rivington Street last fall was so successful Carlson believes it’s the right time to take a bigger plunge into the brick-and-mortar world.
“When we started, the idea was to be e-commerce exclusively and maybe add wholesale selectively,” he said. Rowing Blazers does wholesale its line to Asian retailers Beams, United Arrows, Journal Standard and others.

H&M to Open First Afound Stores in Sweden in June

PARIS — Hennes & Mauritz is opening its first Afound stores in Sweden in June, a discount store that will sell a variety of brands, as the Swedish retailer experiments with formats for engaging with consumers.
“The idea was to create an innovative marketplace in the off-price sector,” noted Mattias Ekberg, creative director of the brand.
“Some people might call us an outlet, but our vision is for the customer to experience a style and deal-hunting paradise,” Ekberg added.
Slow to adapt to the shift of consumers to digital avenues, H&M has been struggling with a decline in business in recent months. The Swedish retailer is in the process of redirecting efforts from the store-expansion-fueled growth to improving existing stores and pushing further into the digital sphere.
The stores will be located in Stockholm and Malmö, opening on June 14 and 16, respectively, with online services open at the same time.
“We want to make it easy for our customers by being where they are, whether it’s digitally or in selected physical stores, and by offering a range tailored to local demand,” said Fredrik Svartling, the brand’s managing director.

Polimoda to Open Third Campus at Florence’s Manifattura Tabacchi

MILAN — Polimoda will open its third outpost next year.
The Italian fashion school, which already operates campuses at Villa Favard in the heart of Florence and in Scandicci, a stone’s throw from the Tuscan city, will inaugurate a new location inside one of the city’s most impressive industrial monuments, the Manifattura Tabacchi, which dates back to the Forties. The complex was originally dedicated to the production of tobacco goods and had been abandoned since 2001.
Polimoda will take over the 645,835-square-foot “Edificio dell’Orologio,” a four-story building that will accommodate 800 people in several classrooms, photographic studios, art rooms, laboratories, computer rooms and an auditorium.
“We are proud to hit this new milestone both because of what it means to us as a school and what it means to the city of Florence,” said Polimoda president Ferruccio Ferragamo. “This is the third branch we have opened over the course of barely 10 years in a territory that we feel is at the very core of our DNA and identity. Like other international fashion schools, Polimoda has made a point of blending into the urban fabric and giving back to the city by rehabilitating historic buildings for public use, thus creating new centers for culture, beauty and knowledge.”

Karl Lagerfeld to Open First U.S. Store in SoHo Saturday

Karl Lagerfeld is ready to take SoHo by storm.
On Saturday, the Karl Lagerfeld brand will open its first U.S. store at 420 West Broadway in New York, which features a mix of Lagerfeld’s European collection and Karl Lagerfeld Paris, which is a joint venture with G-III Apparel Group.
“The moment seems to be right and the space is great,” Lagerfeld told WWD. He noted that distribution of his signature brand, re-launched in the burgeoning masstige category in 2012, first put down retail roots in Europe and then China. “Our first tests in the U.S. were great.”
Inspired by the designer’s personal home and studio, the 3,230-square-foot store has a sophisticated yet inviting, open feel. Each of the furnishings has an unusual story behind it, from antique mirrors to velvet chairs and luxurious marble finishes to the giant Tokidoki silver cartoon sculpture of Lagerfeld — with a ponytail — holding his famous feline, Choupette. A bespoke carpet has a red border around its edges, similar to the border that the designer draws on all of his sketches. Stadium Goods to Open Store Inside Nordstrom

Stadium Goods is aligning with another big entity.
LVMH Luxury Ventures recently backed the streetwear and sneaker retailer, which is now partnering with Nordstrom to operate a concept space within its new men’s store, which is slated to open on April 12 at 235 West 57th Street.
“Sneakers are the fastest growing category in men’s footwear and partnering with Stadium Goods punctuates our commitment to showcasing the best and most rare sneakers from the hottest brands that have long sold out elsewhere,” said Kristin Frossmo, executive vice president and general merchandise manager for shoes at Nordstrom. “Sneakers have disrupted fashion and are now being mixed with everyday looks — from desk to dinner. The Tie Bar continues to expand its retail reach.
The Chicago-based men’s brand, which launched as strictly an online player, will add its fifth brick-and-mortar store in Philadelphia next month.
The store will be located at 1527 Walnut Street in the ground floor of The Beacon apartment building. The 900-square-foot unit is slated to open on April 9 and will join the two Tie Bar stores in Chicago as well as units in New York  and Boston.
“We couldn’t be happier bringing The Tie Bar to Philadelphia, it’s a rapidly growing market for us and offers so much potential to expand our in-person business,” said Allyson Lewis, chief executive officer. “Our existing stores continue to buck the retail trends of late, providing our clientele a unique in-person shopping experience while remaining profitable for the brand. An aggressive retail strategy was essential to our further growth this year and it made perfect sense for that to include Philadelphia.”
The store will offer the brand’s assortment of furnishings and accessories — dress shirts, neckties, bow ties, tie bars, pocket squares, belts, socks, shoelaces. It will also offer the company’s newest product category: dress pants. The pants will be available starting on March 20 and will be sold

Karl Templer Responds to Model Allegations in Open Letter

Last week, I was mentioned in a Boston Globe investigation into the sexual exploitation of models in the fashion industry. This industry, like others, is far from perfect. I fully support the “#Me Too” movement in its determination to shine a light on bad behavior and to call out any man using his power and position to take advantage of those with whom they work. But I also believe that anyone accused of that sort of inappropriate behavior deserves the right to be heard — and that transparency and justice must apply to the accused as well as the accusers.
If I’ve ever inadvertently treated a model disrespectfully or without due care on a job, I’m truly sorry. My work as a stylist includes adjusting clothes on a model. If I have ever made adjustments too quickly or brusquely, and my conduct was misunderstood, then I sincerely apologize. But I categorically deny ever acting with any wrongful intent. That suggestion is untrue. Over nearly 30 years, working with thousands of models, always in public settings, I have never engaged in (and it has never before been suggested that I have engaged in) inappropriate behavior of any kind with models. A stylist’s movement of clothes multiple times — over three

Alexander McQueen, Givenchy to Open South Coast Plaza Boutiques

Alexander McQueen and Givenchy are the latest luxury brands to sign leases at South Coast Plaza. They are to join more than 250 boutiques at the retail center in late spring, and the McQueen boutique will be the only Orange County location for the brand (there is a store on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles), while the Givenchy boutique is a Southern California exclusive (it’s one brand that’s missing on Rodeo Drive).
Family-run South Coast Plaza, which the late Henry Segerstrom built into one of the most profitable retail centers in the world, with annual sales topping $ 1 billion, is already home to Dior, Tiffany & Co., Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Harry Winston, Hermès and The Webster. Segerstrom was many times the first to bring European brands such as Courreges to the States. SCP this year celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The Givenchy store at the Aventura Mall in Miami.

The McQueen boutique will be located on Level 2 of the center in the Nordstrom Wing, while the Givenchy boutique will be located on Level 2 near Jewel Court. The locations are significant because South Coast Plaza has more than 1 million feet of retail space, and customers often must park — or valet

Li Edelkoort to Open Paris Gallery to Spotlight Artists, New Voices

WATCH THIS SPACE: Having first opened a private art salon in Paris more than three decades ago, Trend Union founder Li Edelkoort will soon take her career full circle by unveiling a public design gallery in her company’s headquarters.
Set to open its doors Jan. 18 at 30 Boulevard Saint-Jacques, the space will showcase design and arts and crafts — “what deserves to be shown collected and cherished at this moment in time,” according to the trend forecaster. To that end, a Heartwear pop-up shop will be among the planned events.
Created in 1993 by Edelkoort and some of her fashion designer friends, Heartwear is a nonprofit that collaborates with artisans by helping them scale up their creations without compromising their design integrity, culture or environment that they live and work in. With the assistance of department stores and magazines, Heartwear develops high-level goods with broader distribution. The nonprofit’s aim is to create a lasting connection with a collective or region. Khadi cotton from India and indigo-colored textiles from Benin are two of the projects that have been executed. To try to help the specific regions become self sustainable, profits are reinvested in those where the artists are based.

Meghan Markle’s Wedding-Gown Maker on ‘Suits’ to Open Atelier in Atlanta

MARKLE’S SPARKLE: Meghan Markle’s halo effect on fashion brands is just getting started and one of the greatest beneficiaries is Anne Barge.
While designers, bridal companies and British bookies are only starting to guess what the future American-born royal will wear, the May wedding will not be the first time Markle has appeared to the masses in a wedding gown. Anne Barge decked out the “Suits” actress in one from its collection when her character Rachel Zane dressed all in white for the USA series. Along with the buckets of free publicity that the royal engagement doused on Anne Barge, the bridal company has the added good fortune of opening an Atlanta outpost on Friday.
While Markle will tie the knot with Prince Harry at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, her on-air gown from Anne Barge is known as the “Versailles.” The actress never made it official in the season-five episode with the on-air wedding day dissolving into a sob fest. In a Hello Canada video, Markle and her friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney talked about some of the other options — a strapless Carolina Herrera gown and a two-in-one Naeem Khan dress. Dover Street Market Hosts Festive Open House

HOLIDAY INSTALLATIONS: With Christmas approaching, Dover Street Market hosted an event to celebrate with a series of signature installations from various brands and designers, and marked Comme des Garçons’ Re/tartan Re/energy Holiday campaign launch.
London-based stylists Charlotte Stockdale and Katie Lyall, co-editors in chief of brand new magazine-cum-posterbook Chaos SixtyNine, held a “teenage bachelor bedroom” themed installation in the basement. “We wanted it to be a space where you could put up all the posters from the magazine freely. That seemed naturally to be a teenage bedroom,” said Lyall.
The space was also used to launch the Chaos Bruv Club Collection, as well as special merchandise. “The Bruv Club is like men’s suiting, racer graphics, a bit skate and a bit gentleman,” said Stockdale. “It’s a nice mix of the two. Bruv Club to us is all-inclusive: boys, girls, anyone up for a bit of fun.”
While the second issue of the biannual title won’t be out until at least May of next year, Charlotte and Katie have collaborations up their sleeves — the first of which will be with Hayden Kays, a British artist influenced by Fifties pop art. It will include custom graphics printed onto Chaos phone cases. They will be available

A Bathing Ape to Open Store in Paris

SPACE FOR AN APE: Japanese streetwear label A Bathing Ape is opening a store in central Paris on Dec. 1.
The first French stand-alone store for the brand, which was founded in 1993 by Tomoaki Nagao, known as Nigo, will be on the Rue de la Verrerie, a street that runs parallel to the Rue de Rivoli not far from the capital’s City Hall.
Stretching across 1,500 square feet, the space will bring a futuristic touch — via stainless steel walls and gray marble floors — to a Haussmann-style building facing Paris department store BHV Marais. A Bathing Ape’s owner, I.T, has teamed up with BHV parent company Galeries Lafayette Group for the store.
Artworks by Adam Lister, known for depicting popular paintings with magnified pixels, will decorate the back wall, while mirror and light box ceilings will add dimension to the ceilings.
The Bape store will sell limited-edition items including Eiffel Tower and tricolor motifs in blue, white and red, alongside the brand’s signature ape head and shark designs. Rubber bracelets and tote-bag gifts will be handed out to some shoppers at the grand opening.

EXCLUSIVE: Edie Campbell Pens Open Letter on Model Abuse

LONDON — “We have a problem: We operate within a culture that is too accepting of abuse, in all of its manifestations. This can be the ritual humiliation of models, belittling of assistants, power plays and screaming fits. We have come to see this as simply a part of the job.”
So says Edie Campbell, one of Britain’s best-known models and a vocal member of Cameron Russell’s online campaign to raise awareness around the harassment of models at the hands of photographers and members of the fashion industry.
In an open letter to the fashion industry penned for WWD, the 27-year-old admonishes mainstream media for their silence of the sexual abuse suffered by male models, which she describes as “more complex.”
To her point, a 2016 post on Facebook by male model Cory Bond represents a rare admission: “Inside the modeling business, I have been the victim of inappropriate touching, sexual assault and was drugged once in the course of my 19-year career. I haven’t spoken much about it out of fear of not working and doing the job that I love. You just want it to go away. But trust me, some men in power think that they can do whatever they want

Sarah Jessica Parker to Open New York Pop-up Shop

Sarah Jessica Parker’s SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker brand will open a New York pop-up for the holiday season.
To be located at 640 Fifth Avenue with an entrance at 52nd Street, the 1,600-square-foot shop will sell an assortment of shoes — including styles reissued from the brand’s 2014 launch collection.
SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker’s line of little black dresses and handbags will also be on sale.
The shop is to be open on Black Friday, Nov. 24, and remain open through Dec. 3. Parker is expected to periodically drop into the store to greet shoppers.
“Having a home in New York for our SJP Collection has been only a seeming fantasy since we launched our brand almost four years ago. So it is with unbridled excitement that we share the news that we have indeed found that home, right off Fifth Avenue, in the heart of Midtown,” Parker said.
The actress, producer and designer’s business partner, George Malkemus, added: ”The very idea of the ultimate New York girl opening a pop-up and, on top of it, one opposite the famous 21 Club, has me pinching myself again and again. Berkeley-based designer Erica Tanov will open her first Los Angeles boutique at The Row DTLA with regular hours starting next month. The 650-square-foot space, which will be open on Sundays starting this week, will feature an assortment of Tanov’s clothing, accessories and home goods, alongside a select group of independent designers and including Bay Area painter Emily Payne, Oregon ceramicist Notary Ceramics and furniture craftsman Russell Fong.
“It wasn’t on my radar to open a store in Los Angeles until Runyon Group approached me,” said Tanov of the shopping center developers behind Platform in Culver City. “When I saw that like-minded independent brands were also there, including Bay Area companies like Mission Workshop and Tartine, I was intrigued.”
Tanov said the “crumbling, industrial” vibe of the complex, the former American Apparel factories, which were built in 1918, appealed to her sensibility as well. “It was in some way very luxurious,” she said of the soaring ceilings with exposed beams and raw concrete floors. She added her own vintage fixtures and display cases and an enormous antique door she had in storage. Black powder-coated rolling racks completed the look.

Peta Murgatroyd Says ‘Child Proofing Has Begun’ as Son Shai Attempts to Open Drawers in Cute Video

What’s going on, mom?

Peta Murgatroyd has been busy child proofing her home — and 9-month-old son Shai Aleksander, her son with fellow Dancing with the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy, isn’t too happy about it!

The dancer shared a video of Shai wandering around the kitchen trying to open drawers, screaming when he discovers they’re shut tight no matter how much he pulls.

“Someone help him…the drawers now don’t open,” Murgatroyd captioned the cute video. “#childproofing has begun …to be continued.”

In addition to walking, Shai is also climbing stairs and learning how to ballroom dance with guidance from his uncle, Val Chmerkovskiy.

The designer, who launched his eponymous men’s wear collection in 2013, will open his first store in SoHo on Thursday.
The unit at 109 Mercer Street between Prince and Spring Streets, will have 1,600 square feet of selling space and around 1,400 square feet devoted to showrooms and offices. There will be a soft opening this week and a grand-opening party is scheduled for Oct. 12.

“For us, it’s just easier to control everything from out of the store,” he said. “Our clientele is primarily based in New York, so it just made sense.”

The Brett Johnson line of outerwear, knitwear, woven shirts and trousers are all manufactured in Florence.
The collection has been sold at Neiman Marcus as well as a handful of specialty stores in the U.S. He said the best-selling items are outerwear and knitwear, but the store will also offer made-to-measure, a category that

Isaia to Open Store in Frank Lloyd Wright House in San Francisco

Isaia will open its first store in San Francisco in a landmarked Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building at 140 Maiden Lane.
The 7,900-square-foot store will have 4,000 square feet of selling space and will open on Sept. 22.
In converting the historic building, the Naples-based luxury brand retained all of Wright’s original features and materials. That includes the wall plaster, millwork, trim, railings, bubbled ceilings, suspended planter, glass entry and the brick and stone facade.
Wright designed the building for the V.C. Morris Gift Shop in 1948. It was used by the architect as a prototype for the circular ramp at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, which he also designed.
“This year marks our 60th year as a brand,” said Gianluca Isaia, chief executive officer and third generation of the men’s wear brand. “It is personally very important to me that we are always pushing to do new things, while paying homage to our heritage. Opening a shop in the landmarked Frank Lloyd Wright building accomplishes just that.”
He added that the company was “honored to have the opportunity to work within such a respected piece of American architecture. We kept the integrity of every design feature intact.”

She has a store inside the Peninsula Hong Kong, and the new shop aims to mix East and West. It will also serve as a press and celebrity showroom as she seeks to develop ties in Hollywood. Most recently, Eva Longoria wore Marie France Van Damme while on vacation and the brand is favored by celebrities such as Beyoncé, Heidi Klum, Cameron Diaz, Olivia Palermo, Christina Hendricks, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Kering to Open Historic Paris Headquarters to Visitors

MODERN HOSPITALITY: Kering is opening its historic Paris headquarters to the public over a weekend this month, inviting visitors to explore the history of the 17th-century hospice through a virtual reality tour.
Developed by a French start-up Timescope and historians, the tour will focus on the site’s role as a hospital just over a century ago.
The hospital chapel will serve as the site of an exhibit of contemporary artwork from the Pinault Collection with pieces from Seung-Taek Lee, Chen Zhen and David Hammons.
Over the weekend of Sept. 16 and 17, visitors will also be able to inspect haute couture pieces designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga, dotted throughout the cluster of Left Bank buildings.
The temporary exhibits represent “heritage and creation,” said Kering chairman and chief executive officer François-Henri Pinault, who was looking for a fresh way to show the site to the public for this year’s heritage days event.
The company celebrated its move into the headquarters a year ago, inviting designers, movie stars and local politicians to view art work from the Pinault Collection.

Prince Exhibition to Open in London

THE WORLD OF PRINCE: The belongings of pop star Prince will be the subject of a new exhibition, opening in London’s O2 arena in October.
From world-famous items such as the orange Cloud guitar from his Super Bowl halftime performance or the purple jacket and ruffled shirt from the “Purple Rain” tour to never-before-seen artifacts taken from Paisley Park, his estate outside Minneapolis, the exhibition will offer an intimate look into the legendary performer’s life.
Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, highlighted the Cloud guitar as one of the standout pieces in the collection. She told the British newspaper Evening Standard that “[even though] people always associate the color purple with Prince, his favorite color was actually orange.”
Nelson chose the British capital as the location for the first exhibition centered on her brother since it was the city that accepted the musician the most. He performed at the O2 arena for 21 consecutive nights in 2007. The exhibition, titled “My Name Is Prince” will run next to the same arena for 21 days.
Nelson added that by staging the exhibition, she is aiming to fulfill her brother’s wish of opening up his world to the public: “It was always his wish to make all

Jackie Rogers to Open Men’s Store

Jackie Rogers is going back into men’s retail.
The muse of Coco Chanel who has also been a big-band singer, Hollywood starlet, New York model and designer over the course of her storied career, relaunched a men’s line earlier this year and has experienced enough success to devote an entire space to it.
Rogers, 85, who has a women’s store on the tony Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, Fla., took over the former jewelry store next door last fall in hopes of opening an art gallery. But those plans never came to fruition so she decided to convert the 600-square-foot space into a men’s store. She will offer a small assortment of jackets, shirts and some accessories, she said.
The space, which is connected to her women’s store, will debut by Oct. 15 and there will be a grand opening later that month or in November, “when the people are there,” she said. It will carry a ready-to-wear collection but will also offer made-to-measure. Shirts will retail for $ 300 to $ 600 and jackets for $ 895 to $ 3,000. The less-expensive models will be unconstructed, she said, but they will also sport the Jackie Rogers signature silhouette: a narrow shoulder, higher armhole and no vents.

Fashion Research Italy to Open Headquarters in October

Alberto Masotti, the former owner and president of the La Perla innerwear brand, has embarked on a new project. His Fashion Research Italy, a nonprofit organization founded in 2015, will open its headquarters in Bologna on Oct. 21 and will also debut post-graduate courses.
Located at 12 Via del Fonditore, on the outskirts of the Italian city, Fashion Research Italy has renovated a 75,600-square-foot space, which once housed a La Perla manufacturing plant, for a total investment of 15 million euros, creating an educational and exhibition hub dedicated to Made in Italy.
“Manufacture and craftsmanship should embrace new opportunities of development through innovation, research, education, heritage and globalization: fashion needs to evolve into fashion 4.0,” said Masotti, who last June unveiled the “Statue of a Woman” as the symbol of the foundation. The sculpture, which is 32 feet high, is dedicated to Olga Cantelli, Masotti’s late wife and former La Perla designer, and features 21,120 LED lights, its shape recalling both the female body and a gown, thus linking heritage and innovation in fashion.

Vintage @Intermezzo to Open Doors to Consumers

NEW YORK — Last year the buzz was all about fashion shows becoming consumer oriented. Now industry trade shows want in on the action.
Beginning next month, Intermezzo Collections will introduce its first-ever Vintage @Intermezzo consumer-facing fair within the show, which takes place Aug. 6 through Aug. 8 at the Javits Center here.
It will feature a selection of vintage dealers showcasing one-of-a-kind apparel and accessories collections. Consumers will be charged $ 20 to shop the vintage section exclusively and are being invited to wear their favorite vintage pieces to the show.
“We’re encouraging [retail] buyers to [dress in vintage] too. Vintage is very much a community. We want to engage that community. By encouraging people to come dressed, we’re curious to find out what their stories are. Vintage is all about a story, and who doesn’t love stories?” said Peter Berta, show director of Intermezzo.
He plans to offer Vintage @Intermezzo three times a year in January, May and August. “It’s the immediate show, and we speak to immediate needs at Intermezzo. This product exists and it doesn’t need to be produced so it lends itself into the business model of Intermezzo — the immediacy,” Berta said.
The exhibit’s selections will range from luxury vintage designers

HBO to Open ‘Ballers’ Pop-up in Los Angeles

To mark the season three premiere of HBO’s “Ballers” series, the network is opening a Los Angeles pop-up at 633 North La Brea Avenue.
They’ve tapped men’s wear brands including Roc96 x MadeWorn, Pyer Moss, Buscemi, Cazal and Hall of Fame to produce co-branded capsule collections.
The show’s costume designer, Tiffany Hasbourne, said the pop-up would bring the “‘Ballers’ aesthetic to life.”
“This is going to be the most action-packed and stylish season of ‘Ballers’ yet, so there was no other way to launch than with a fully-immersive experience to capture that energy and offer our audience the opportunity to shop the ‘Ballers’-inspired collection,” she said.
Roc96, which was started by Rocafella cofounder Kareem “Biggs” Burke, teamed up with MadeWorn on a distressed, cotton jersey T-shirt that pays homage to Jay-Z’s “Can I Live” song from Reasonable Doubt, his debut album that was released in 1996. The shirt is embroidered with a 3 Ball. They will also offer a MadeWorn bomber jacket.
Kerby Jean-Raymond, who designed Pyer Moss, has made an oversized short-sleeve, ponte knit crew and a hooded sweatshirt.
And Jon Buscemi, who started his Los Angeles-based footwear and accessories brand in 2013, will offer a white slide, the 125MM high-top sneaker in black and

Alongside the note, Kimmel shared a photo of his smiley son.

“Basically, the pulmonary valve was completely blocked and he has a hole in the wall between the left and right sides of his heart,” Kimmel previously explained, adding that despite the successful open heart surgery, Billy will have another operation between 3 and 6 months old.

Joked the star, “Poor kid. Not only did he get a bad heart, he got my face.”

NYDJ Casts Fall Campaign From Open Call

NYDJ, which prides itself on offering jeans that fit every woman, took that message straight to consumers. Over the course of three weeks in April, the company visited three malls — Fashion Valley in San Diego; Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., and Roosevelt Field in Garden City, N.Y. — in search of women to appear in its fall ad campaign, which launches Tuesday.
The company staged an open casting call with mini-makeovers, hair touch-ups and fittings, and then photographed each of the women in the NYDJ jeans. Over 300 women participated in the three cities.
“We didn’t set out looking for models at all,” said Kate Foster, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of NYDJ. “What we were really inspired by was that magic moment that occurs every day in dressing rooms of stores that carry NYDJ, when a woman slips on her jeans she has a positive emotional reaction to finding her perfect fit. We felt like we had an opportunity to build an entire campaign around that magic moment, so we decided to take the show on the road. What we saw was far better than we expected.”

Mr and Mrs Italy to Open Stores in Beijing, Miami and Hong Kong

The luxury utilitarian outerwear company Mr and Mrs Italy will be opening stores in Beijing and Miami, and has aims to double sales to $ 100 million in the next five years.
In New York from the company’s headquarters in Rimini, Italy, creative director Geraldina Bassani Antivari detailed some of the brand’s plans. Since joining the company four years ago, sales have increased from $ 1.5 million to $ 47 million. Now the goal is to hit $ 100 million by 2021, she said. She praised chief executive officer and owner Andrea Bucalossi for being “highly organized” and “having that Italian vibe of doing and moving and being quick and fast. Managing sku’s for him is a daily war.”
The eight to 10 producers in Italy that the company relies on know they need to continually research new techniques, cuts and furs. “We don’t want to work with companies that don’t respect the ethical laws,” Antivari said. “We work very closely with all of our wholesalers because we want to be one of those companies that gives service or something that was made for New York or for China.”

Mizzen + Main to Open Six-Month Pop-up in SoHo

Men’s wear brand Mizzen + Main is opening a pop-up store on Thursday in SoHo.
The store, at 452 West Broadway, will be open for six months. While the pop-up is open, the company will offer customers a “trade program” where they can bring in a cotton dress shirt that they no longer want in exchange for $ 50 off a Mizzen + Main shirt.
The men’s brand has had four pop-ups before, but those were open for either a few days or a few weeks. The last one in Manhattan — two pop-ups were in Manhattan in 2015 and two in San Francisco in 2016 — was at the Refinery Hotel in November 2015.
According to Kevin Lavelle, chief executive officer and founder of the Dallas-based brand, “This will make us better. To be able to interact with our customers will help us understand what is needed to run retail ourselves, and for our retail partners.”
Lavelle said he doesn’t have any grand plans to open a fleet of Mizzen + Main stores. “I don’t ever really see us owning a massive retail presence. We have a great distribution network,” he said.

Twitter Applies Comey’s ‘Open Setting’ Excuse To Everyday Life

During his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday, former FBI director James Comey declined to answer several questions, giving the reason that the public hearing was an “open setting.”

For instance, senators received this particular response when Comey was questioned about the dossier compiled by a British spy and whether he believed President Donald Trump colluded with Russia.

And although his refusal to answer these questions is presumably because they touched on classified information, Comey said the phrase so often, it became drinking-game worthy.

The phrase also seems like a great way to excuse yourself from answering something you don’t want to answer.

Twitter ran with this idea and turned the phrase into a really funny meme.

Here are the best of the bunch:

Tennis Player Banned From French Open After Forcibly Kissing Reporter On Live TV

French tennis player Maxime Hamou has been banned from the duration of 2017’s French Open for kissing a female reporter without her consent on live television.

After losing to Pablo Cuevas during a match on Monday, 21-year-old Hamou was interviewed by Eurosport reporter Maly Thomas. During the 45-second interview, Hamou repeatedly wrapped his arm around Thomas’s neck and pulled her towards him in order to kiss her cheek and ear. Thomas ― knowing she was on live TV ― attempted to laugh it off and escape Hamou’s grip. Despite Thomas’ obvious protest, Hamou continued to grab and kiss her.

Watch the full interview below:

On Tuesday, Thomas told HuffPost France that the interview was “frankly unpleasant.”

“If I hadn’t been live on air, I would have punched him,” she added.

The French Tennis Federation (FFT) announced on Tuesday that Hamou will be banned from the duration of the tournament because of his actions.

“The leadership of the tournament has decided to remove the accreditation of Maxime Hamou, following his reprehensible behavior with a (female) journalist, yesterday, Monday, May 29,” the federation said in a statement

A few hours after FFT released their statement, Hamou posted an apology to Instagram

“I would like to offer my deepest apologies to Maly Thomas if she felt hurt or shocked by my behavior during her interview,” Hamou wrote. “I just spent a wonderful week here at Roland Garros, living my most beautiful emotions as a tennis player, and I let my overflow of enthusiasm express itself awkwardly toward Maly, who I know and who I sincerely respect. Nothing of what is written was my intention. I am available to her to present my apologies in person if she would like. I still learn every day from my mistakes to become a better tennis player and a better person.”

In a statement released Tuesday, Eurosport condemned Hamou’s behavior as “highly inappropriate,” adding that “Maly is a highly respected journalist and we are pleased that a full apology is being offered.”

Balenciaga to Open First-Floor Brand Takeovers at Colette

GUEST HOUSE: Balenciaga recently revamped its Rue Saint-Honoré store, a few doors down the same Paris street from Colette. Now Balenciaga is kicking off a series of monthlong brand takeovers of the first floor of the landmark concept store.
For its guest slot — scheduled to run June 19 to Aug. 5, with a custom-made design under the artistic direction of its creative director Demna Gvasalia — Balenciaga is to present its men’s fall collection, an exclusive women’s collection and limited-edition products specially designed for the event. Other surprises are in store, according to Colette, with the Kering-owned brand also due to stage an artistic installation in the floor’s gallery space. Only the store’s Beauty Box space will remain unchanged.
Gvasalia, whose design ethos is based around “enhancing, underlining and re-presenting that which already exists in a new light,” in March unveiled a new design concept for Balenciaga’s Rue Saint-Honoré flagship based on a clothing warehouse, with industrial conveyor rails similar to those in the brand’s production headquarters in Italy, ceilings covered in aluminum foil, and long, aluminum tables for accessories.
Following in Balenciaga’s footsteps, meanwhile, will be Les Vacances de Lucien, offering a selection of designs from brands represented by Paris-based Lucien Pagès’ namesake public relations agency, which will take over the space from

Matchesfashion.com Poised to Open Town House on London’s Carlos Place

LONDON — In its 30th anniversary year, Matchesfashion.com is on the move, with plans to open a second private town house at 5 Carlos Place near Mount Street in Mayfair.
The 5,000-square-foot building spans six floors and was formerly the showroom and sales space for jeweler Solange Azagury-Partridge, who has since moved to a smaller store in Bayswater.
It’s the second town house space for Matchesfashion: The first, known as No. 23, opened seven years ago in London’s Marylebone and the Georgian building is used to host events and service VIP customers by appointment.
Real estate sources estimate that Matchesfashion will be paying about 600,000 pounds, or $ 776,200, a year to lease the building from property owners the Grosvenor Estate.
The town house concept has become core to Matchesfashion.com’s growth strategy, a retail pillar that stands alongside the brand’s web site and the five brick-and-mortar stores it operates across London. Matchesfashion’s owners Tom and Ruth Chapman have always seen it as a social space where they can offer personalized service to their heavy-spending customers.
“It’s for clients who, for whatever reason, don’t want to shop in a store,” Tom Chapman told WWD’s Retail 2020 forum last month. “We use it to engage it with high-value existing customers,

Chloé to Open ‘Maison’

SAVE THE DATE: Chloé may be poised for a fresh chapter under its new creative director, Natacha Ramsay-Levi, but the house is also keen to protect its past — and the story of the Chloé girl.
Geoffroy de la Bourdonnaye, the brand’s ceo, at a leisurely seaside lunch Saturday during the Hyères fashion and photography festival in the south of France, revealed the brand will open a “maison” dedicated to the house’s heritage on July 2 during Paris Couture Week.
The news comes a day after French Culture Minister Audrey Azoulay unveiled a series of measures to safeguard the country’s assets, including a permanent fashion collection, at a time when a number of couture houses, including Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, are moving to preserve their archives with state-of-the-art conservation facilities.

Round Two to Open New York Store

Round Two is bringing its popular retail concept to New York.
The secondhand store, which allows customers to buy, sell and trade vintage along with modern apparel — consider it the Beacon’s Closet of streetwear — will open in Manhattan this summer. This comes after a successful pop-up held late last year at Procell, a vintage store on the Lower East Side.
Co-owners Sean Wotherspoon, Chris Russow and Luke Fracher have yet to lock down a location, but customers can expect the same lively atmosphere they’ve cultivated at their Los Angeles shop on Melrose. Shoppers regularly line up outside of the store, which is stocked with Nike sneakers, pieces from Supreme, band T-shirts and vintage items from Guess, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger.
“People are drawn to the pace of the store,” said Justin Esposito, Round Two’s creative marketing director. “Every single day there’s new inventory. People are always coming in to resell us stuff.”
Wotherspoon, Russow and Fracher opened their first Round Two location in Richmond in 2013 and in 2015 introduced the Los Angeles location, which is frequented by celebrities and influencers including Kendall Jenner, Migos, DJ Khaled and Lil Yachty. They recently opened The Gallery, a by appointment only space that

Bookseller Plans To Open A Bookstore In D.C. By And For People Of Color

For 16 years, Angela Maria Spring has worked as a bookseller ― most recently as the manager of Washington, D.C.’s iconic Politics and Prose bookstore. Now she’s planning to open her own store, Duende District, which will be run by a deliberately diverse staff.

On April 10, Spring launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of a pop-up Duende District bookstore to operate at the 2017 Artomatic festival. Spring, who is Latinx and the daughter of a Panamanian immigrant, felt inspired to open the intentionally multicultural bookstore after several years at Politics and Prose. Though D.C. is a highly diverse city, she found herself in a primarily white neighborhood, working with white booksellers and catering to a largely white clientele.

“For five years, almost every other Latino I saw was cleaning somebody’s house or yard, taking care of someone’s baby or cooking someone’s meal,” she wrote on Kickstarter.

By launching her own bookstore, Spring hoped to give opportunities to colleagues of color and to build a literary space that put multiculturalism and diversity front and center. Creating a browsing space that’s “owned, operated, and managed by a majority of people of color,” she says in her Kickstarter video, can create a “high-quality, welcome experience for everyone.”

A Publishers Weekly piece on the bookstore points to “the current political environment” as one motivation for Spring’s bold move. On the Kickstarter page, she describes the new venture as “part of my resistance effort.” But also, she told PW, the dazzling whiteness of the bookselling world was a long-time concern.

As with every facet of the publishing industry, bookselling isn’t as diverse as the community it ostensibly serves ― an issue writer Roxane Gay addressed in a keynote at the American Booksellers Association Winter Institute in January, in which she argued that publishing and bookselling gatekeepers “don’t really want to do what it takes, to invest money” to foster true diversity.

Even apparent commitments to improving representation, may only hide still-severe problems. A significant percentage of children’s books today are about characters of color ― over 20 percent. But the percentage of children’s books created by non-white authors is much lower, suggesting that while white authors have changed their approach toward race, significant barriers remain for writers of color.

Spring’s bookstore, and its Kickstarter campaign, encourage book lovers to get serious about diversity by supporting a business that doesn’t just welcome a diverse customer base, but gives power and voice to underserved communities.

Check out the Duende District Kickstarter.

Thom Browne to Open Store in Milan

MILAN FOR BROWNE: Thom Browne continue to expand in Europe with the opening of a store in Milan.
A sign with the brand’s logo has appeared on a retail space in Via Gesù, dubbed the Via dell’Uomo, or men’s street, near the Four Seasons Hotel. The street is home to brands ranging from Caruso and Rubinacci to Brioni and Stefano Ricci, to name a few.
Details about the store were not available at press time.
Thom Browne, as reported in January, has set its sights on a shop in London, its first in Europe, which will be located in Mayfair on Albemarle Street.
The opening of the London store is the first major expansion move by the company since Sandbridge Capital acquired a majority stake in Thom Browne last May from Japan’s Stripe International. Stripe retains a minority stake. Sandbridge’s other investments include stakes in Derek Lam, Tamara Mellon, Farfetch, Rossignol, Topshop and Karl Lagerfeld.
The New York-based designer, who was awarded the CFDA men’s wear designer award last year, launched his men’s business in 2001, and has become known as one of the most directional designers in American fashion in both men’s and women’s wear. Rodd & Gunn to Open Store in Brooklyn

Rodd & Gunn, a New Zealand-based men’s wear brand, will open its second U.S. store in New York City in March.
The 3,200-square-foot store at 81 Front Street in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn joins a flagship that opened in Fashion Island in Newport Beach, Calif., in October.
Rodd & Gunn operates 85 stores in New Zealand and Australia, but entered the American market as a wholesaler.
Asked why the brand chose Brooklyn instead of Manhattan for its East Coast debut, Mike Beagley, chief executive officer, said, “We weren’t really looking at opening on the East Coast, but this opportunity came up and we thought it was a great way of commencing in New York quickly. It is an amazing building in an iconic location that we believe is an emerging retail and lifestyle area of Brooklyn – incredibly high average household income and literally a stone’s throw from Wall Street.”
He said the California store has performed “exceptionally well and we are really happy in how the Newport Beach community has embraced us. We are trading well above plan and selling all of our categories from hand-made in New Zealand luggage to outerwear and footwear.”
Beagley said the plan calls for opening eight to 10

Hidden Figures Stars Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons and Glen Powell Open Up About Death of John Glenn

For the stars of Hidden Figures, the death of hero astronaut John Glenn makes the film all the more meaningful.

“He was a brother, he was an uncle, he was a father,” Kevin Costner, who plays NASA manager Al Harrison in the movie, told PEOPLE of Glenn on Saturday at a special screening of Hidden Figures in New York City.

“Then there’s the idea of how a man lived his life and I realized, that man, he lived his life. As a soldier, as an astronaut, as a senator. He was not only in control of the planes he flew. He was in control of his life.”

Glenn died on Thursday, surrounded by family at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, according to a hospital statement.

Glen Powell portrays the astronaut-turned-U.S. senator in the film about three African-American women who provided NASA with the key mathematical data used to get Glenn to space in the program’s first successful space mission.

He told PEOPLE that playing Glenn caused him to see the famed astronaut in a new light.

“I think the more you fall in love with him, the more you start to look at him like a grandfather that you’re really proud of,” he said at the screening.

“It really does feel like a loss. But at the end of the day, in 95 years, there’s not anybody I think has accomplished more in that amount of time,” Powell said.

He added: “ affected so many people, inspired so many millions. It’s a loss. But at the same time, what a celebration of life.”

Jim Parsons, who plays Paul Stafford, said receiving the news of Glenn’s death while promoting such a movie was a “slap in the face.”

RELATED VIDEO: In Memoriam: John Glenn

“I would’ve been saddened and surprised no matter when the news came out,” Parsons told PEOPLE at the event. “But it’s a little ironic for him to pass away just within days of us doing all this stuff for this movie that’s introducing three new faces of the space movement that we’ve never known of before.”

He continued: “The beauty of it is that man, John Glenn, that man who just passed away, has, for our lifetime, been such the face — or at least a face — of NASA and the space movement. He was such an integral part of bringing someone like Katherine Johnson into the room.”

The movie is based on the novel of the same name by author Margot Lee Shetterly. The screenplay was co-written by Allison Schroeder and director Theodore Melfi.

Hidden Figures hits theaters Dec. 25.

OPEN THIS END: CONTEMPORARY ART FROM THE BLAKE BYRNE COLLECTION

2016-12-04-1480865324-4507172-1.WarholOpenThisEnd.jpg

The final leg in the two-year journey of “Open This End: Contemporary Art from the Blake Byrne Collection” exhibition continues at the Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art, Lewis & Clark College, in Portland, Oregon. This amazing show’s travels began in 2015 at the Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University, which coincided with Blake’s 80th birthday celebration, and then toured to The Ohio State University Urban Arts Space and Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery, Columbia University. “Open This End” assembles both iconic and lesser-known selected works from Byrne’s remarkable and distinguished collection, which features more than 1,200 pieces, narrowed down to about seventy-five for this exhibition.

This delightful presentation is a virtual window into a serious collector’s personal vision through an art historical context, highlighting some of the most influential artists of the last fifty years, carefully and skillfully tracing a number of intertwined narratives in the progression of contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. Organized over the last five years by Barbara Schwan, Executive Director of The Skylark Foundation, this is a simply remarkable exhibition on so many levels, and supporting her efforts to produce a scholarly and impressive hardcover catalog were Richard J. Powell, Kris Paulsen, Kimerly Rorschach and Bruce Kogut. The title comes from a small 1962 silkscreen painting by Andy Warhol, the earliest work in the show, which suggests an invitation for the viewer to explore this soon-to-be “unpacked” display, which, like a gift being unwrapped, always brings with it an element of surprise, anticipation and delight.

Installation, “Open This End: Contemporary Art from the Blake Byrne Collection,” Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art, Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon.

Joseph Wolin, the curator of the exhibition elaborates: “By extension it also suggests that contemporary art may comprise a sometimes puzzling package that we can unlock for both pleasure and edification. In a more humorous vein, the title implies that there exists a certain way to approach contemporary art and its history, a particular end from which to open the box (in this case, a crate!), an implication belied by contemporary art itself, and by the multiple, parallel, interconnected, open-ended, and at times contradictory artistic and historical threads the exhibition gathers together.” For any number of reasons, the title seems to fit rather cleverly and appropriately, but the irony is that from the get-go Byrne was not interested in building a collection to impress others with brand names like Warhol, but rather with very little guidance early on, used his intuition to seek out works that would provoke an emotional response, regardless of how obscure the artist was initially, it obviously was a chance that Byrne felt worth taking. I’m reminded of Evel Knievel’s own fifteen minutes of Warholian fame, which came with a personal observation just after one of his well-known and dangerous motorcycle jumps: “No risk, no reward.”

2016-12-04-1480865647-2307459-4.PiersonNothing.jpg

In fact, risk is related to reward and achievement for most of the artists represented in this memorable exhibition, especially for Warhol, as it is for most great private collections of contemporary art. This is an era when some noted art collectors around the planet have built huge museums for their own collections, including François Pinault in Paris, Jorge Pérez in Miami, Eli and Edythe Broad in Los Angeles, Dutchman Joop van Caldenborgh and Budi Tek in China, among others. Blake Byrne’s goal was not to construct an art fortress to protect his artworks, but to choose to live with his most treasured pieces, rarely “de-acquisitioning” any of them, and eventually passing on portions to other institutions. Byrne graciously does this from time to time; his promised gift to MOCA LA of 123 works, for example, remains the largest and most generous donation in the museum’s history, in fact, over half of the works included in “Open This End” are from the promised gifts to MOCA LA, as well as a good selection that has been promised to Duke University’s Nasher Museum.

The story of Blake Byrne is unique, and is encouraging news for young collectors that have an interest in contemporary art, but at first have little background in art appreciation and a sense of where to begin. Byrne first started accumulating modest pictures during his honeymoon in Paris, and after several moves in between, he landed in Providence, a significant art city and home to thousands of artists as well as the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), one of the world’s best art schools, and then to Fort Worth, where he and his family regularly visited the Kimbell Art Museum and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art for inspiration. He eventually moved back to Manhattan in 1988, taking up residence at 58th Street and 7th Avenue, so naturally he would visit the 57th Street art galleries in his neighborhood, which strengthened his perspectives on art.

I first met Blake and his family on the day they moved into the Victorian house next door to mine on the historic east side of Providence, Rhode Island. He was in the business of managing TV stations, and his magic touch made them profitable. He also had all the makings of a great collector: inquisitive, instinctual, studious, intelligent, adventuresome, open-minded, enthusiastic, an astute eye and a warm heart, along with a willingness and the resources to invest in works of art with which he also wanted to enjoy living. As our friendship developed, I introduced him to the campus of RISD, and as I recall, he began acquiring a few works here and there of local artists, such as Bill Drew and several very early works of mine. Mr. Byrne was a proud workaholic, and was especially adept at analyzing TV station data reports every evening when he finally arrived home. Surely it was this experience and training that later he applied to buying art, after he retired as a broadcast executive and began collecting in earnest in 1988. On the advice of Jack Tilton, his long-time friend and mentor and highly respected Manhattan gallerist, Byrne went to Art Basel with Tilton in 1988 and made his first cutting-edge art purchases, including works by Juan Muñoz, Cristina Iglesias and Richard Tuttle, among others. Not bad for the first date! And, fortuitously, he started collecting Marlene Dumas at bargain prices the following year, a wise decision, as her works have since shot up greatly in value. From this jumping off point, he assembled an impressive collection that is both expansive and focused, maintaining strong commitments to certain artists that he has accumulated en masse.

“Open This End” does not try to track a single theme or storyline, but takes advantage of the significant strengths of Byrne’s collection that offers a unique and personal overview of contemporary art. With the size, breadth and complexity of this memorable show, it’s not possible here to examine select works in detail, but suffice it to say that the following alphabetical sampling of “Open This End’s” line-up will give you a clear perspective on what constitutes a wonderfully revealing and dramatic presentation: Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Mark Bradford, Marlene Dumas (11 works), Robert Gober, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Douglas Gordon, David Hammons, Bruce Helander, Thomas Houseago, Mike Kelley, Martin Kersels, Martin Kippenberger, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, Glenn Ligon, Agnes Martin, Rita McBride, Paul McCarthy, Steve McQueen, Matthew Monahan, Juan Muñoz, Wangechi Mutu, Bruce Nauman, Albert Oehlen, Paul Pfeiffer, Jack Pierson, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Tony Smith, Jennifer Steinkamp, Luc Tuymans, Andy Warhol, Kehinde Wiley and Christopher Williams. It should be noted that this list signifies only about 10% of Byrne’s entire collection, which continues to grow. As a whole, this distinguished assortment of human creativity provides an astute summary of most of the important trends in contemporary art since the 1960s. Kimerly Rorschach proposes a striking summation in her insightful catalog essay, “Blakean Vision,” which is appropriate to repeat here: “Through collecting, the collector can engage with and consider the great issues: love and loss, birth and death, the fate of our planet, our identity and culture, both collective and individual–in short, our humanity.”

Happy Birthday Blake Byrne!

Alarming Numbers Of People Are Trying To Rip Apples Open With Their Bare Hands

Hey, it’s the weekend. Have you got absolutely nothing to do? Why not destroy an apple using only your brute strength? (Just make sure to eat it afterward — food waste is bad, people!)

We bring this up because the young and hip on Twitter are apparently all about the #SuperSageAppleChallenge. The “challenge” is whether or not you can use your bare hands to squeeze or twist an apple in two. Chances are, you can’t.

The task got its start — and its name — from Sage Northcutt, a UFC fighter whose muscled hands make apples quake. He tweeted a video of himself inflicting fruity carnage on Tuesday and encouraged his followers to do the same.

He also tweeted an apple-breaking clip at Chrissy Teigen for her birthday, which seemed to really impress her.

Here are some other people who may or may not also impress Teigen.

If you embark on this challenge and live to tell the tale, let us know. Just be careful.

Cerruti 1881 to Open Temporary Paris Boutique

HERE TODAY: The high-end men’s prêt-à-porter label Cerruti 1881 will, over the coming days, open a temporary boutique in a prime, footfall-rich Paris street ahead of the opening of its new flagship next summer. The event also marks the kick off of the house’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2017.
The 4,000 square feet store, at 51 Boulevard Haussmann in the city’s fashion district, is located across from Printemps and will house products from across the brand’s universe, including rtw, watches and jewelry, eyewear and accessories. There will also be an area dedicated to bespoke tailoring. Features in the minimalist space, which will stay open through July, include cement floors, industrial beams, light sculptures and modular fixtures.
Chief creative officer Jason Basmajian, who joined the house in October 2015, said the interiors have “an industrial-chic feel, but are housed in a grand Haussmannian classic structure.” The store, he added, is located on a busy crossroad “that is both decidedly Parisian, as well as international, with eight large windows that showcase the full universe of Cerruti.”
During the festive period some 10 million people are expected to pass through Boulevard Haussmann, where Galeries Lafayette is also located.
Founded in 1967 by Nino Cerruti, Cerruti 1881 has been part of the Hong Kong-based

Pitti Uomo to Open in Uncertain Economic Scenario

During the seasonal press conference held on Thursday by trade show organizer Pitti Immagine to present the schedule of Florence-based international men’s wear fair Pitti Uomo, running Jan. 10-13, Italian fashion and textile consortium SMI Sistema Moda Italia released its research on the status of the country’s textile and fashion compartment.
According to the study, after a positive first quarter that saw revenues gain 2.2 percent, compared with the same period last year, the second quarter slowed down, posting a 2 percent decrease. This referred to the textile, ready-to-wear and accessories markets. SMI provided a scenario, but not detailed figures.
According to data elaborated on the base of companies’ forecasts, the negative trend would continue in the third quarter of the year, with revenues expected to be down 2.4 percent.
Data provided by the Italian National Institute of Statistics pointed that, in the first eight months of the year, the exports of textile and fashion products were up 0.5 percent to 17.5 billion euros, or $ 18.6 billion at current exchange rate, compared to the same period last year. While the total exports toward European countries, mostly Germany and France, rose 2.2 percent, those directed to the extra-European markets were down 1.6 percent. In

North Sails NYC to Open on Fifth Avenue With Sailing-Inspired Apparel

STRONG GUSTS AHEAD: The political climate being what it is, more than a few New Yorkers wish they could just sail away to another land. With next week’s opening of a North Sails store, they will have an outpost to buy sailing gear should they actually follow through on that whim.
The 2,100-square-foot North Sails NYC store will start greeting shoppers Wednesday at 108 Fifth Avenue. The location will be the company’s third in the U.S., since Newport, R.I., and Annapolis, Md., locations opened in recent months. North Sails NYC is an offshoot of North Sails, which was started in San Diego in 1957 by Olympic gold medalist sailor Lowell North. With distribution in 29 countries, the company designs, engineers and manufactures sails for racing and cruising sailboats from 8 feet to 200 feet.
Sailors or boat owners in search of North Sails’ actual sails will have to shop elsewhere. But in line with its nautical heritage, the new boutique will have a beverage bar with a curated international selection of water for shoppers to choose from. North Sails has also partnered with Nespresso to offer espresso and other coffee drinks for consumers to purchase.
In addition to the brand’s high-tech outerwear, shoppers will

Rhone to Open Pop-up, Dress Trainers at Chelsea Piers

Rhone is partnering with Chelsea Piers.
The men’s activewear brand will open a pop-up shop next week at the sports club’s Connecticut location at 1 Blachley Road in Stamford. The 600-square-foot space will open to the public on Nov. 15 and remain in place through the spring.
The shop, which will be located at the front of the club, will offer Rhone’s best-selling styles as well as seasonal collections. The brand will also host a number of in-store events during the run of the pop-up.
“This is the perfect opportunity to interact with our customers and local community, and understand how we can best serve them,” said Nate Checketts, cofounder and chief executive officer of Rhone.
Rhone has partnered with Michelle Barone, a visual director whose background includes J. Crew, Loft and Vineyard Vines, to design the shop. She created an industrial, modern design that includes vintage locker baskets and an old wooden bar that functions as a checkout counter. Custom fixtures by Stand and Build are blackened steel with a diamond pattern metal mesh.
In addition to the shop, Rhone will also outfit the male staff at the club.
“Rhone shares many of our principle values including the desire to push to be better every day,”
