Can Country Music and ‘Message Songs’ Get Along? Kacey Musgraves, Luke Bryan and Others Make Their Case

A sense of inclusion in Nashville occasionally manifests in a socially conscious single. This is nothing new for country music, which has a long history of “message songs,” some forward leaning (Loretta Lynn’s feminist “The Pill”), some arguably not so much (Merle Haggard’s “Fightin’ Side of Me”). In the 2010s, a song like Kacey Musgraves’ […]

Better Days Unveils Inaugural Art Exhibition With Works From Maripol, Olaf Breuning and Others

DESIGN IN MIND: Despite sounding like a sign of these unsettling times, the restaurant formerly known as Happy Ending quietly reopened as Better Days earlier this month.
But the name change is meant to be an homage to New York City’s music incubators from the Seventies and Eighties. In its original incarnation, Better Days was a place for the disenfranchised to retreat and an escape for artists who danced away their troubles. Owner Oliver Stumm said he wants Better Days to be a neighborhood destination and haven for creatives, so featuring local artists was a natural step in fostering this type of environment.
With that in mind, an exhibition has been culled by Better Days owner Oliver Stumm, as well Rita Cruz, Luke Brown, Eddie Brannan and Skylar Pittman (whose day job is with Bruce Weber’s Studio Little Bear Inc.) The artists they selected are likely to be found at the dinery and downstairs club on any given day. Work from established ones like Jack Pierson, Maripol and Olaf Breuning are in the mix. On view through December, the exhibition will be featured in Better Days’ upstairs space. The downstairs lounge is slated to open Oct. 6.
Fittingly, in November Damiani will publish

When Friends ‘Ba Dum Tss!’ Each Other’s Jokes, Bad Things Happen

Back in the day, rimshots were perhaps an honorable thing to play to punctuate a comedian’s punchline, but now it’s about shame. When your friend says “Ba dum tss!” after your joke, that means you should be ashamed of yourself.

Comedy writer Evan Krumholz takes “Ba dum tss!” to the next level. … No, a level even beyond that one. … And that one, too. This level has blood.

WATCH: Valuing What You Have to Offer (Fear that others won’t)

You have gifts and talents to share… trust me on this. But doubting the value of these gifts – and the fear that others won’t see the value – can stop you from sharing what you have to offer… or from allowing yourself to be compensated for what you do. I hope this will help you more fully appreciate what you offer, which will help others do the same.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

Rochambeau Taps Nike, Avery Dennison and Others for Woolmark Prize Collection

Laurence Chandler and Joshua Cooper, the design team behind New York-based men’s wear brand Rochambeau, looked to multiple resources to help them compete at the highest level for the 2016-17 International Woolmark Prize contest, which will be awarded in Paris on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
Rochambeau, who won the U.S. Woolmark prize last July along with women’s designer Gabriela Hearst, will compete against MÜNN from Asia, Ex Infinitas from Australia, Cottweiler from Britain, Tonsure from Europe and Bounipun from India.
Their winning look for the U.S. competition, which was influenced by the late artist Dash Snow, consisted of a boxer short made from wool suit fabric, a hand-waxed wool vest that looked like trompe’l’oeil leather, a wool hat and trousers. Chandler hopes to build on that with a larger collection that’s been created with help from Nike, Avery Dennison, Chromatic, Larsson and Jennings, Evrythng and Albertus Swanepoel. Rochambeau also worked with fabric mills including Dashing Tweeds, American Woolen, Aurotex, Steady Tex and Kendor Fabrics.
“We want to continue the narrative we created this past summer by bringing on great partners and innovating with wool,” said Chandler, who added that the entire line was created in New York.

The Society of Others

The Society of Others

New fiction from the screenwriter of the Academy Award-winning Gladiator. The nameless narrator of The Society of Others is an alienated youngster who sees no meaning in life. He doesn’t even see the point of getting out of bed in the morning. To get his nagging family off his back he embarks on an aimless hitchhiking adventure. When he is picked up on the highway on the way to the Channel Tunnel by a truck driver spouting Descartes and Kant, it seems as if he is at the start of a picaresque coming-of-age journey around Europe. But then the truck reaches the border of a repressive European state and the narrator watches in terror as the driver is tortured and killed by a sinister band of men in black bomber jackets. What was so dangerous to this country’s regime in the cache of banned books he was smuggling in to the country? With all the pace and thrust of a thriller, the hero is propelled into a dizzying sequence of increasingly terrifying Kafka-esque adventures, as he tried to understand the bloody struggle between the regime’s secret police and a band of equally ruthless and fanatical freedom fighters, and his own role in that struggle. Written to be read at several different levels and to provoke debate, this novel is also a moral fairytale, bursting with art, poetry, music and ideas. From the Hardcover edition.

This book will help people find what foods are causing their distress and/or allergy problem. It is a handbook, an allergy detection book, and a cookbook all in one. What initiated this book was the fact that none of the elimination diets at the time took into account that many individuals could not digest soluble fats. Also, all the diets were in food form, without any instruction on how to include these foods into meals. This book uses the menu method to detect problem foods.

Tracy Morgan Settles With Wal-Mart Over Fatal Crash That Killed Actor’s Friend And Injured Three Others

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Actor-comedian Tracy Morgan has settled his lawsuit against Wal-Mart over a New Jersey highway crash that killed one man and left Morgan and two friends seriously injured.

A filing in federal court in Newark on Wednesday refers to a confidential settlement reached by the two sides.

Morgan’s lawyer hasn’t responded to a message seeking comment.

Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. calls it an “amicable settlement.” Details haven’t been disclosed.

A Wal-Mart truck slammed into the back of a limo van carrying Morgan and the others back from a show in Delaware last June. Comedian James “Jimmy Mack” McNair was killed. Morgan suffered head trauma, a broken leg and broken ribs.

Wal-Mart reached a settlement with McNair’s two children in January.

The truck driver, a man from Jonesboro, Georgia, faces several criminal charges, including death by auto, in state court. He has pleaded not guilty. He wasn’t a defendant in Morgan’s federal lawsuit.

Christina Aguilera Impersonates Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus & Others In ‘The Voice’ Promo

We all know that Christina Aguilera does one hell of a Britney Spears impression, but this is a little different.

Aguilera has a knack for impressions as we first learned during her turn hosting “Saturday Night Live” back in 2004, and she previously impressed “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” viewers with her spot-on impression of Spears’ singing voice, but this time around her take on the pop princess isn’t the most flattering.

At Met Gala, ‘HONY’ Photographer Shoots Pics Of Catering Staff And Others Who Don’t Get A Spotlight

Brandon Stanton, the photographer behind the immensely popular Humans of New York site, has a special talent for getting strangers to open up to him. And while he usually prefers to shoot and interview ordinary people he encounters on the streets of the city — so far, he’s photographed more than 5,000 New Yorkers — last night, he focused his lens on one of the most extraordinary events in Manhattan: the Met Gala. Unsurprisingly, while there was no shortage of star power at the ball, Stanton’s interest remained in those whose faces and names you don’t know off the top of your head.

Don’t Let Others’ Expectations Limit You!

On Sunday last week, after a wonderful screening of Back on Board: Greg Louganis, I had an opportunity to indulge my other passion, acting! We had a wonderful backers’ reading of Spring at the Willowbrook Inn. It was great to play with the amazingly talented actors Sean McDermott, Justin Lore, and Jason Patrick Sands under the guidance and direction of Scott Wojcik. Spring at the Willowbrook Inn is a lovely play written by Jonathan Van Dyke and Douglas C. Evans. It’s a sweet, touching love story spanning from the late 1960s, addressing the pain of the mores of the time (real and imagined), to today, where marriage equality is a reality. It was quite the emotional journey.

I know for many it was quite a jump to see me go from Olympic diver to actor, and yes, I have seen many an eye roll — “Oh, not another one!” — but performing is where it all began for me. I was on stage by the time I was 3, singing and tap dancing. I have quite a number of acting credits to my name, mostly theater — Cinderella, Jeffrey, Nunsense A-Men, and Dan Butler’s one-man show The Only thing Worse You Could Have Told Me… — but some film: Touch Me, Watercolors, Saber Dance, and the soon-to-be-released Entourage: The Movie.

The point I’m trying to get at is this: Don’t give up on your dreams! Do what you love! I will continue to engage in activism for human rights and HIV education and awareness, and I will continue pursuing my passion for the sports of diving and dog agility. Speaking of the latter, I have the lofty goal of making it onto a team competing in the World Agility Championships with my next puppy — whenever that might be, as I know the commitment that entails. In preparation, I’m doing my homework by following my mentor in the sport of dog agility, Susan Garrett.

We often impose limitations on ourselves based on the influence of others. Listen to your heart and follows your dreams. As I have said in the past, if you reach for the stars and don’t encounter a few clouds, you aren’t reaching high enough! Go for it! Don’t limit yourself. Follow your heart and your passions. The ones who love you will support you unconditionally; anyone who doesn’t support you doesn’t really love you.

Namaste,
Greg Louganis

Interview With Demi Lovato: Using Her Tour and Platform to Empower Others

2014-10-07-demiafricams.jpg

Many popular young stars resist or rebel against the role model label. Not platinum-selling recording artist Demi Lovato, who has not only embraced it, but has taken it to a whole new level. In addition to candidly sharing her own personal story of overcoming obstacles when she does interviews and during her performances, she has also created her own pioneering campaigns that shine an impactful spotlight on causes that are dear to her heart, which she has incorporated into her current Demi World Tour.

Her latest campaign was sparked on her 21st birthday. When Lovato turned 21, she decided to do something transformative for herself and others by going on a volunteer trip to East Africa with Me to We, “an innovative social enterprise that transforms people into world-changers, one action and experience at a time.” On the trip, Lovato helped build an X-ray clinic and hauled water for the women living in the drought-stricken rural community. She also joined in a traditional beading circle with Me to We Artisans Maasai Mamas. Meeting the Maasai Mamas moved Lovato to create the Limited Edition Demi Lovato Rafiki Friend Chain. This special edition piece will be sold at all of her tour stops for $ 15 with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward Lovato’s goal to fund the building of a Women’s Empowerment Center in Kenya. The center will offer skill training workshops aligned to local culture and traditions, provide access to computer labs and offer a space to accommodate local artisans who are participating in the Me to We Artisans program, giving women the autonomy and capacity to create strong economic futures for themselves and their families.

As an additional feature to empower audiences on her world tour, Lovato has added renowned Me to We motivational speaker Spencer West, who lost both his legs at a young age and garnered international media attention in 2012 when he reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. West, whom Lovato had befriended on her Africa trip, shares his courageous story and inspires Lovato’s fans to overcome obstacles and redefine what’s possible.

Lovato has also been stepping up as an outspoken advocate for mental health issues, specifically bipolar disorder, with which she was diagnosed and has talked openly about. She recently announced her involvement with The Mental Health Listening & Engagement Tour at which she will connect with some of the nation’s leading experts and advocates over a series of discussions to speak about her own life experiences, encouraging and inspiring others with her own journey. Lovato had released a PSA video when she announced the tour, in which she explains, “Bipolar depression really got my life off track, but today I’m proud to say I am living proof that someone can live, love, and be well with bipolar disorder when they get the education, support and treatment they need.”

Lovato also uses her writing as a tool to inspire others. Her #1 New York Times-bestselling book book, Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year was a compilation of advice, quotes and affirmations that helped guide her personally along her journey. Her follow-up to this book, which comes out today, is Staying Strong: A Journal, a writing journal for readers to capture and reflect on how they are feeling, which features new quotes chosen by Demi throughout to help inspire and motivate expression: “happiness, sadness and everything in between.” Says Lovato, “To stay strong every day it’s important to express yourself.”

I talked with the multi-talented Lovato about all her various projects and why she feels so passionately called to use her platform to help and inspire others.

Tell us about your trip to Kenya with Me to We for your 21st birthday. Why did you decide to spend that milestone birthday that way and how did that trip impact you?

My 21st birthday was a big milestone for me, but not in the way that our society has conformed to. For my birthday, I wanted to spend my time doing something meaningful and empowering by giving back. It was such an incredible and exciting experience that I will never forget.

What was the original inspiration behind your decision to help fund the building of the Women’s Empowerment Center? What are you hoping to achieve, and what is the vision for the Center?

I have always found it really important to educate and empower other women. The goal with the Women’s Empowerment Center is to provide new opportunities to women I’ve found to be so inspiring where they will be able to get training and resources they need to create a better future for themselves and their families.

Tell us about the Maasai Mamas. What was your experience like getting to know and working with those women?

The Maasai Mamas are amazing! They are incredibly hard-working women who are truly inspirational. The whole experience of meeting them and getting to know them was truly rewarding because they pursue their dreams while still supporting their families and taking care of their households. It was an honor to work alongside them in their beading circle and learn about their lives.

What lessons do you think can be derived by traveling the world getting to know people of different cultures?

Traveling and getting to know others can really help you learn about different cultures and also establishes amazing connections between people who would have never met under other circumstances. For me, getting to work so closely with the people in this culture helped me grow as a person and was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Tell us about the Rafiki Friend Chains and the other ways people can support the Women’s Empowerment Center and generally get involved?

I got to work with the Maasai Mamas in their beading circle, where they hand-make “friend chains.” The chains are strings of glass beads that you can wear as bracelets, necklaces, or however you want. All of the proceeds for the Rafiki Friend Chains will go to building the Women’s Empowerment Center. You can buy them at any of my shows on my World Tour, or online.

My daughters are huge fans of yours–they just saw your show in Albany and said it was fantastic. What are you most excited about with this tour? And how do you see your evolution as an artist and performer?

Whenever I’m on tour, I’m always excited about connecting with my fans! I want to make each show a fun, personal and inspirational experience! Over the years, I’ve grown so much personally and professionally. That transition has definitely been reflected in my music and as an artist.

You include Spencer West as a speaker on this tour. What resonated with you about his story and why did you decide to have him join you? What do you hope your audience comes away with from hearing him speak?

Spencer’s story is really moving. When I saw him speak at We Day, I saw how he was so inspiring to the audience. I hope that my audience will take away how he overcame his challenges to achieve his dreams.

I also saw your recent announcement and PSA about your Mental Health Listening and Engagement Tour. What can you tell us about that initiative and how that developed?

The initiative is working to help people find their strength and get the help they need. You can learn to live well with mental illness by finding the right treatment plan, and I want people to know that it’s okay to seek help.

I love your book “Staying Strong”. Do you have a favorite quote or philosophy that you live by?

I think that’s it – stay strong! There are so many inspirational quotes that I live by, but what also helps me get by every day is writing down my thoughts, experiences and feelings – which is why I have a follow up Journal (Staying Strong: A Journal) to coincide with my book, Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year.

Oftentimes people think that helping others is something that has no personal rewards for oneself. What do you get out of giving back?

I am grateful that I’ve been given the platform to help others by sharing my story and love to meet my Lovatics and hear their encouraging stories as well. For me, nothing is more rewarding than helping others.

Oscar Documentaries and Others: The Act of Killing and The Last of the Unjus

147 docs were eligible for Oscars this year. 15 made a short list, and 5 are now contenders. One, The Act of Killing, a first feature length film for director Josh Oppenheimer, working with an anonymous partner, raises questions of morality, conscience, and accountability related to the 1965-6 genocide in Indonesia. As Oppenheimer explained at a special Academy of Art & Sciences screening series of the Oscar nominated documentaries, he had met some survivors of the killings, and in the process of deciding to make a film on this subject, he met with perpetrators, proud and still in powerful government positions.

Oppenheimer interviewed forty killers before landing on Anwar Congo who described in detail how he developed a method of killing using wire that he learned watching American gangster movies, the advantage being that this technique produced the least amount of blood to mop up. Also adept at beheading using a machete when needed, Congo’s testimony suggested to Oppenheimer that the bravado behind describing this cruelty might in fact hint at a new reckoning; this taboo topic might be ready for discussion for a regime that prefers to stand silent behind its untoward past.

When asked to describe what they did to unarmed victims said to be Communist or enemies of the state, Congo and other death squad members seemed boastful and eager to show and tell, agreeing to film a re-enactment of these murders, with fellow Indonesians including women and children as actors. A particularly cruel Herman Koto performs his bit in drag, and in a penultimate production number, beautiful, colorfully dressed women sway to a rendition of “Born Free.” The viewer marvels at this surreal non-fiction.

It was as if I went back to Germany and found the Nazis in power crowing about the murder of the Jews, said Oppenheimer, who in fact is a descendent of Holocaust survivors. His remark called to mind The Last of the Unjust, an outtake from Claude Lanzmann’s epic length Shoah, focused on Benjamin Murmelstein, third and last president of the Jewish Council of the Thereseinstadt ghetto in Czechoslovakia, who fought with Adolf Eichmann on matters of liquidating the Jews, and how best to complete the final solution. For him, Hannah Arendt’s summation of Eichmann’s “banality of evil,” is pure rubbish; Eichmann was no bureaucrat, but a particularly inventive murderer. Claiming to have saved lives, Murmelstein, an erudite former rabbi from Vienna, was a controversial figure after liberation, accused of being a collaborator, but freed of these charges.

After Lanzmann filmed survivors for Shoah in 1975, he teased out several interviews for stand-alone films. At 3 1/2 hours, The Last of the Unjust is riveting, because Lanzmann, seen chain smoking in trendy sunglasses, takes the time to linger on a particular exterior where murders took place, making a leafy empty corridor grow in haunting elegiac intensity. How easily the imagination fills in the horrific drama, even as the specificity of Murmelstein’s words transfix. What Claude Lanzmann has said about his film Shoah works for his treatment of Benjamin Murmelstein: “I am not here to judge.”
