Betsey Johnson’s 1997 Runway Collection Rocks On at Urban Outfitters

Ready to rock, again. Urban Outfitters and Betsey Johnson partner in exclusive revival of summer 1997 runway collection in a 10-piece ready-to-wear selection, launching online May 13.
Borrowing from Betsey Johnson’s archives, the reinspired summer 1997 launches on urbanoutfitters.com, and will be available in select Urban Outfitters stores across the U.S. and Canada on May 20. The collection ranges from $ 79 to $ 350.

On the latest collaboration with Urban Outfitters, designer Betsey Johnson said the collection represents a “direct reflection of my 1997 runway show,” with this collection of 10 dresses rivaling past collaborations with the brand in 2014 or 2015 by being “revived in a more simple and modern way.” Urban Outfitters’ core customer was born in the Nineties, according to Gabrielle Conforti, Urban Outfitters’ chief merchandising officer of women’s and home in a statement to WWD. “We’re excited to give them the opportunity to experience the iconic Betsey designs updated for today,” she said.
When asked of what emotion is captured in her 1997 collection, Johnson spoke of the blend in feminine whimsy and rebel rocker — appropriately rock ‘n’ roll and ruffle. Conforti added that the collaboration is filtered through Urban

HELLO KITTY’S NEW BUDDIES: Hello Kitty fans can only preorder the new Barbie Hello Kitty, but they can find the Fila x Sanrio collection at Urban Outfitters. Shoppers will find a women’s collection of apparel and accessories featuring Hello Kitty as well as the Keroppi, Chococat and Badtz-Maru. Apt timing, considering Hello Kitty turned 43 on Nov. 1.
Created by the Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu in 1974, the Hello Kitty icon has covered a lot of territory in that time, having had its pink-leaning designs stamped on sandals, EVA airplanes, microwaves and coffee. In one of the more unexpected tie-ins, this fall Sanrio partnered with Tanaka Farms, a family-owned farm in Irvine, Calif. for a yearlong partnership featuring Hello Kitty & Friends.
Fila, which has been working to upgrade its image beyond the brand’s athletic roots, first showed the new Hello Kitty installment at ComplexCon. Trè Samuels, The Onyx Violins Appear in Nautica for Urban Outfitters Campaign

Nautica is teaming with Urban Outfitters once again.
The brand has partnered with the youth retailer to create its third capsule collection. The eight-piece assortment includes graphic T-shirts, striped shirts, logo pants, an allover printed hoodie, a V-neck sweater, a hat and a reversible jacket. The collection retails from $ 28 to $ 149.
To promote the line, Nautica and Urban Outfitters tapped model Trè Samuels and musical duo The Onyx Violins to front the campaign.
The line launches today within Urban Outfitters stores and on its e-commerce site.

American Eagle Outfitters Teams With It Gets Better Project

FEELING THE PRIDE: American Eagle Outfitters will offer limited-edition AEO Pride T-shirts, tanks, boxer briefs and accessories with 100 percent of sales benefiting It Gets Better Project, a nonprofit organization focused on communicating to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth around the world that it gets better.
The campaign began today at ae.com and in select stores in the U.S., Canada and Israel and will run through the end of the month, while supplies lasts.
AEO will promote the partnership through social media, customer e-mails and in-store marketing and will encourage customers to take the It Gets Better Pledge and upload their own video at Itgetsbetter.org.
In Pittsburgh, home of AEO’s global headquarters, the company will sponsor Pride Pittsburgh by enabling associates to attend the Pride in the Streets concert and participate in the Pittsburgh Equality March on June 11.
In 24 select AEO stores, customers are invited to share their pride by taking photos in front of the Pride banner and have their photos uploaded to the company’s Times Square billboards on June 25, during the NYC Pride March. Basic Outfitters to Be Featured on ‘Shark Tank’

Basic Outfitters, a New York-based online retailer of men’s wear basics, has been selected to be one of the companies on ABC’s television program, “Shark Tank.”
Some 50,000 companies apply to be featured on the program each year, but Laura and Michael Dweck, the husband and wife duo behind Basic Outfitters, were chosen to be part of the group of 80 contestants who will be featured on this season of the show, they said. The Dwecks will appear Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.  
The Dwecks launched Basic Outfitters in November of 2015 shortly after getting married and moving to a small New York apartment. With limited closet space, “Michael’s eclectic and longtime accumulated sock and underwear assortment would have to go and be replaced by a fresh, new and curated collection of basics,” the company said on its web site.
In the past year, Basic Outfitters has experienced a growth rate of around 25 percent a month. Its claim to fame is its “Create-a-Drawer” option, where the company will refill a basics drawer with up to 19 socks, underwear, T-shirts and joggers for $ 60. Both a basic and a fashion drawer option are offered.
