Celiac Disease Vaccine Now Under Trial Could Allow People to Eat Gluten Again

Celiac disease sufferers may soon be able to safely eat gluten, thanks to a new vaccine currently undergoing testing worldwide.

The vaccine, called Nexvax2, targets the immune system to stop the inflammation that typically occurs when people with celiac disease consume gluten. It was first tested in 2011, for the initial trial phase, and was found to be safe.

The company that produces Nexvax2, the Massachusetts-based ImmusanT, received $ 40 million in funding in 2017, allowing them to continue researching the vaccine. The second round of testing will start in Melbourne, before going out to other cities in Australia. ImmusanT hopes to enroll 150 patients from the United States, Australia and New Zealand in the trial.

“The vaccine is designed to target the 90 percent of celiac disease patients with the HLA-DQ2 genetic form of disease,” Dr. Jason Tye-Din, the head of celiac research and gastroenterologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where the trial will start, told the Sydney Morning Herald. “A successful therapy that can restore normal gluten tolerance would revolutionize celiac disease management.”

RELATED VIDEO: Party City Apologizes and Pulls Ad After Offending People with Gluten Allergies

Currently, there is no treatment for celiac disease — the only option is to cut out gluten entirely. While going gluten-free became trendy among health-conscious people in the last decade, for celiac disease sufferers the protein poses a severe risk to their small intestine, and causes diarrhea, abdominal pain and vomiting.

Nexvax2 won’t immediately enable people with celiac to eat gluten again — rather, the vaccine will slowly build up an immunity to the proteins in gluten and end the negative side effects.

“Through this study we anticipate making new insights that will further our ability to demonstrate specific suppression of the immune response to gluten epitopes and associated effects of celiac disease,”Dr. Ken Truitt, ImmusanT chief medical officer, told BeyondCeliac.org.

PEOPLE Explains: Jessica Chambers’ Alleged Murderer Goes on Trial Again

The murder still startles with its brutality.

On a back road of Courtland, Mississippi, after sundown on Dec. 6, 2014, someone splashed an accelerant on Jessica Chambers and set both her and her black 2005 Kia Rio aflame. The 19-year-old former high school cheerleader, who was then working at a local department store, died hours after authorities discovered her walking near the vehicle with burns over 98 percent of her body.

Among her final words were those presumed to identify her attacker.

After months of investigation, prosecutors built their case against Quinton Tellis, now 29, a recent acquaintance of Chambers who had grown up in her neighborhood and attended her same high school years earlier.

The prosecution claimed phone records placed the two together before Chambers died and Tellis had admitted to police that they were together that day.

In alleging a motive, authorities said recovered text messages between the two showed that on the day she was attacked, Chambers had rejected Tellis’ requests for sex four times, reported TV station WMC.

In court last year, prosecutor John Champion argued that Tellis and Chambers eventually had sex that December night, after which he tried to suffocate her before setting her and her vehicle on fire, believing she was already dead.

But jurors who weighed the allegations — including the claim that several first-responders heard Chambers utter a name that sounded like “Eric” or “Derek,” neither of which fit the accused — were divided over guilt or innocence when Tellis was tried for capital murder last fall.

With the jury unable to reach a verdict, the judge declared a mistrial.

Tellis will go back on trial on Sept. 24 in a courtroom in Batesville, Mississippi, where the first trial unfolded 11 months ago.

He has maintained his innocence.

As the retrial moves forward, the identity of “Eric” has remained front and center.

Circuit Judge Gerald Chatham cleared Champion, the local district attorney, of misconduct after he was accused by the defense of coaching a potential witness to say that Chambers called Tellis by that name, according to the Commercial Appeal. Defense attorney Darla Palmer has appealed that decision.

If convicted of murder in the Chambers case, Tellis faces life in prison without parole.

The grisly mystery of who attacked the teenager lasted for more than a year — underscoring anxieties about a killer possibly hiding in the community and drawing scrutiny to the rough crowd with whom Chambers spent time, as local drug dealers and her exes were questioned.

Among the national headlines the case made was a PEOPLE cover story in January 2016.

After an extensive investigation, Tellis was indicted in February 2016. Authorities had zeroed in on the phone records that they alleged placed him with Chambers at the approximate time of her attack, with Tellis’ DNA on her car keys.

Defense attorney Palmer reportedly said Tellis was several miles away at a store purchasing a pre-paid debit card. She further argued that Chambers’ apparent identification of her attacker as “Eric” cleared her client, because neither Chambers nor the person who had introduced her and Tellis knew Tellis by that name, according to the Clarion-Ledger.

In turn, the prosecution called burn expert Dr. William Hickerson, who testified that injuries to Chambers’ mouth and tongue were so severe that she likely would not have been able to pronounce words correctly. (Chambers was unable to provide responders with more than a first name.)

Even so, the district attorney told jurors that investigators had considered and ruled out several Erics and Dereks before charges were filed against Tellis, whom authorities have described as a “habitual” criminal offender and who is accused in an unrelated killing in Louisiana.

The conclusion of his first trial last October had its own drama, as the jury initially filed into the courtroom to announce its verdict only to be short-circuited by one juror who said the unannounced decision was not unanimous, as required.

Judge Chatham, who oversaw that trial and will preside over the retrial, then sent the jurors back for further deliberations — and when they returned a second time, a verdict of not-guilty was announced.

But when Chatham polled jurors individually, several said they had voted “guilty.”

That led the judge to send the divided panel back a second time for further deliberations, and then again a third time, before he acknowledged they were “hopelessly deadlocked.”

Prosecutors quickly announced their intention to retry Tellis, who did not take the stand in his defense.

During police questioning, prosecutor Champion said, Tellis repeatedly changed his account of his whereabouts and activities on the day Chambers was attacked. Prosecutors further alleged that Tellis deleted all evidence of Chambers from his phone to distance himself from her.

“She had a life full of tomorrows, and she had every right to wake up on the morning of Dec. 7, 2014,” Champion said during his closing argument in the first trial. “Now, three years later, she’d be 22. Would she be married? Would she have kids? That was all taken away from her at 8:04 p.m. on Dec. 6, 2014.”

Tellis currently sits in a Mississippi state prison serving a five-year sentence after an unrelated conviction for burglarizing an unoccupied dwelling, jail records show.

He also is facing a murder charge in Louisiana, where authorities suspect he killed Meing-Chen Hsiao, a 34-year-old former Taiwanese exchange student found dead in August 2015 with multiple stab wounds, defensive wounds and slicing wounds in her upper back.

Tellis has pleaded not guilty in that case, which is pending the outcome of his trial in Chambers’ death.

Beautiful People RTW Fall 2018

For the first Paris runway show of his 10-year-old Beautiful People brand, designer Hidenori Kumakiri drew on his experience in pattern-making to consider the encounter of a masculine wardrobe with the female body.
To achieve this, the Japanese designer took a cue from the tactics used to adjust garments on the go, and made them permanent by employing them as morphing methods for his shapes.
Case in point: a duffel coat with a voluminous hood looked slim-line, and its back revealed how panels had been pulled back and sewn instead of being left to be overlapped; a jacket was likewise nipped in at the waist as if it had been pulled in, but fell impeccably in the back; a trench coat wrapped diagonally around the body, with all bulk removed, and a chimney-necked knit column dress managed the feat of being at once oversized and body-skimming.
Poorly executed, this could have looked forced. As it stands, it looked as effortless as it felt fresh.

Reese Witherspoon Visits Her Walk of Fame Star to Give It a Little Cleaning: ‘Don’t You Let People Walk All Over You’

Reese Witherspoon paid a visit to an old friend on Sunday — and helped her get a little spruced up.

The actress posted a series of hilarious videos to her Instagram Story, documenting her trip to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame to see her own star.

“I’m running a little bit lake for work today but it’s really important,” said Witherspoon in the first clip. “I heard my friend is really close by, so I want to go meet her really quick and I want you guys to meet her too.”

As the 41-year-old approached her star, she told her followers, “This is so exciting guys, here she is!”

She quickly whipped out a tissue, giving her star a little buffing.

“Oh, now you’re looking good, girl,” she joked, adding, “And don’t you let people walk all over you!”

The A Wrinkle in Time actress received the star back in 2010, bringing her daughter Ava Phillippe, now 18, and son Deacon Phillippe, now 14, along for the ceremony.

She also posted an Instagram photo of herself on the Walk of Fame, writing, “When you run into a friend on the street.”

This past week, Witherspoon appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, jokingly competing with the host and fellow guest Oprah Winfrey over their friendships. Though the trivia competition about Winfrey’s life was fierce, DeGeneres was ultimately the winner.

People Are Loving Project Runway’s Decision to Use Models up to Size 22

Project Runway made a major change this season by including models of all sizes, and Twitter can’t get enough of it.

On Thursday, season 16 of the popular fashion competition series premiered on Lifetime and came with a major twist for designers: Rather than spending all season working with more traditional fashion models, the team would be working with models with a range of body types – from size 2 to 22.

“I believe we should have done already years and years and years ago,” Klum told Entertainment Tonight ahead of the premiere, “So I’m happy though that now this season, we’re starting.”

“This is the real world. Not everyone is, you know, runway figure or what the runway figure used to be,” she added. “You have to dress real people, and real people come in different sizes: short, tall, more voluptuous, skinny. There is many of us, and so a real designer needs to know how to do that. So get with it.”

The designers appeared to be excited about the switch (even if it did throw them off a bit). But users on Twitter were all-around supportive, praising the show for embracing a wider view of the industry.

“I’m so proud that Project Runway is finally doing this,” wrote one user. “Should have been done many years ago. Lovin’ it!!!!!! #loveprojectrunway.”

“Yasss to Project Runway for including so many different types of models and designers!!” tweeted another.

While this is the first time that  Project Runway is requiring designers to use models of different sizes, it’s not the only time that a clothing collection from the television show went beyond the traditional “runway figure” size.

Season 14 winner, Ashley Nell Tipton, designed her final collection for curvy women.

“This was the opportunity that I was given to showcase who I really am as a designer,” Tipton told PEOPLE at the time. “I had to show that this is what I design, and this is what I know.”

Project Runway airs Thursdays (8 p.m. ET) on Lifetime.

Munir told HuffPost he hopes to do rotations in various hospitals across the U.S. to gain experience. He’s currently looking for housing in New York City, though ― a search he called “quite the ride.”

A post shared by Rehan Munir (@rehanmunir) on

Some of Munir’s New York-based friends recommended he post an ad on Gypsy Housing, a closed Facebook group for people looking for housing and roommates, so earlier this month, Munir did just that.

“I’m Rehan and I’m looking to rent a furnished room on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side or Midtown Manhattan,” the post read

“I’m professional, friendly and easy to live with,” he added. “Most of all, cleanliness is of utmost priority to me. Please let me know if you have any leads.”

In response, the 26-year-old got way more than housing offers:

“You can totally find a room for $ 800! Just will have more than a few roomies, so be warned,” one woman wrote. “Also, and I apologize if this is inappropriate, but umm … boyyyy you fine!”

Others got real bold and straight-up proposed to Munir:

The post had 363 “likes” at last count and got plenty of media attention. Munir said he never expected such an “enthusiastic” response when he wrote the listing.

“It was pretty overwhelming,” he told HuffPost. “I wrote it and the next day I wake up and I see my post has been inundated with messages and it’s reached a number of blogs locally and internationally. I found it hilarious! The Internet is really an unpredictable place.”

Though people have been “very helpful and kind” in helping Munir look for a room, he’s still mulling over his housing options.

And to answer the question on seemingly everyone’s minds: Yes, your boy is single.

“I’m single but trying to focus on my career at the moment,” he told HuffPost.

Alex Rodriguez Says J-Lo Is One Of The Most ‘Impressive’ People He’s Met

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez aren’t afraid to show the world how happy they are.

Lopez recently shared some romantic shots from their recent trip to Paris on Instagram, dubbing the getaway “baecation.” And the former MLB player isn’t staying mum, either.

Rodriguez spoke to Extra on Monday during a press event for ABC’s “Shark Tank.” During the interview, he explained that he and Lopez prioritize spending time together despite their hectic schedules and are very compatible.

“If you want to be together, you are together,” he told Extra. “Our kids get along really well, we’re both from New York, we’re both Latin, we’re both in our 40s, we’re really enjoying life, but she really is one of the most impressive and smartest human beings I have ever met.”

The baseball star attended the “Shark Tank” press event as he prepares to become the first Hispanic “shark” on the show in the fall.

“The fact that (Hispanics) contribute over a trillion dollars annually to the economy is just a phenomenal feat,” Rodriguez said, according to CNBC. “I think in D.C. and other business communities, we should be having really smart conversations on how to double that number.”

Carrie Fisher’s Death Should Be A Wakeup Call To People With Sleep Apnea

Carrie Fisher died from sleep apnea among other health issues, according to a recent statement from the Los Angeles coroner’s office. The “Star Wars” actress also had traces of several drugs, including cocaine, in her system.

Though her drug use has grabbed headlines, the coroner’s report is focused on the role of the common sleep disorder, which affects more than 18 million Americans.

Obstructive sleep apnea, the clinical term, is a health condition that causes breathing to be interrupted during sleep and can disrupt rest throughout the night. The most common sign of the condition is chronic snoring.

Sleep apnea is serious: It raises the risk of dying early by 46 percent, according to a 2009 study. Sleep apnea also increases the chances of sudden cardiac death, a condition that kills approximately 450,000 Americans every year.

Primary care doctors typically don’t inquire about sleep apnea during regular checkups, according to Dr. Douglas Kirsch, medical director at the Carolinas HealthCare Sleep Medicine and president-elect of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. But it’s certainly something that shouldn’t be ignored.

“While it’s generally considered a chronic medical condition that people have for many years, there are some night-to-night risks for a major medical problem,” Kirsch told HuffPost.

How sleep apnea can hurt your heart

The condition on its own can lead to severe health complications. Sleep apnea can cause hypertension, heart conditions and mental health issues like depression. It’s undetermined whether or not Fisher, who died late last year at the age of 60, was getting medical help for the issue.

The disorder occurs when a person’s airway becomes obstructed. This could happen for a number of reasons, including structural issues like oversized tonsils or an issue where the tongue and throat muscles relax and block the windpipe. Being overweight can also increase a person’s risk for developing the disorder.

A blocked airway is essentially what leads to the disrupted breathing that occurs with the condition. When breathing is delayed, it causes oxygen levels in the blood to decrease. This drop essentially puts pressure on the cardiovascular system, which makes the heart work harder in order to keep everything in check.

This process is what ultimately contributes to a higher risk of high blood pressure and heart issues for people with sleep apnea, according to the American Sleep Association. The condition can also lead to irregular heartbeats.

If left untreated, sleep apnea puts a person at greater risk for heart attack and stroke.

The deadly relationship between drug use and sleep disorders

It’s important to note that the coroner listed the cause of her death as “undetermined” and there’s no proven link between the drug use and sleep apnea in the case of Fisher’s death. But experts say substances like alcohol and medications can make the condition worse.

Research has also found that sleep disturbances and addiction may be linked. Those with substance use disorders may be more likely to develop sleep disorders, according to a small 2009 study. Separate research has found a link between chronic opioid use and sleep apnea, indicating the use of those substances may induce disordered breathing while asleep.

What to do if you suspect you have the condition

Because the common symptom of sleep apnea ― snoring ― can also be a harmless sleep problem, many people don’t often think to get checked for the issue. Aside from snoring, Kirsch recommends looking out for daytime sleepiness or waking up in the middle of the night as indicators that you might have the condition. Morning headaches can also be a sign.

Fortunately, there are ways to fix sleep apnea. Some doctors may recommend doing a sleep study, where physicians will examine factors like your heart rate, airflow and blood oxygen levels while you rest to determine whether or not the condition is present. Medical professionals may also determine if you need a continuous positive airway pressure device (more commonly known as a CPAP), which is a mask that helps keep the airway open during sleep.

Some other methods in managing sleep apnea include possible dental procedures or a surgical procedure to fix the issue that may be causing a blocked airway. Lifestyle changes like weight management through diet and exercise and cutting back on alcohol can also help control the disorder’s severity.

“Patients will delay testing because they are worried about the treatment options for [sleep apnea],” Kirsch said. “That’s like not getting your blood pressure checked because you are worried about treating high blood pressure, it doesn’t make sense … I have many, many patients, who after starting treatment, bemoan the fact that they had delayed for so long because they feel so much better. “

As with all medical issues, the best course of action is to start by talking to your doctor.

“If you have a concern about your sleep, speak to your primary care physician about it, and if they are unable to help, seek help from a board-certified sleep physician,” Kirsch stressed.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

So THAT’S Why Some People Don’t Need To Use Deodorant

With rising temperatures and long summer days on the way, most of us are trying to figure out the best way to curb heavy sweating and body odor.

But if you’re one of the lucky few who don’t possess the gene that produces odor in your armpits ― it’s called ABCC11 ― you don’t even have to worry about deodorant.

According to the website LiveScience, the presence of the gene means that your armpits lack a chemical that, when combined with sweat, bacteria feeds on to produce smelly body odor.

In January 2013, Ian Day, a genetic epidemiologist at the University of Bristol and Santiago Rodriguez, PhD and senior lecturer in population and molecular genetics at Bristol Genetic Epidemiology Laboratories, co-authored a study on deodorant after surveying 6,495 women. The two found that 2 percent of participants (117 women) had the ABCC11 gene. Of those 117 women, 78 percent of them still wore deodorant even when they didn’t have to.

Though Day and Rodriguez’ study didn’t look at males, Day told LiveScience he thinks their research can be generalized. He also estimated in the interview that the rare gene is found in two percent of Europeans and nearly all East Asians and Koreans.

“These findings have some potential for using genetics in the choice of personal hygiene products,” Rodriguez said in a statement about the study. “A simple gene test might strengthen self-awareness and save some unnecessary purchases and chemical exposures for non-odor producers.”

For those of us who don’t have this lucky gene and tend to sweat a lot during the summer, try these helpful tips:

  1. Try an Rx-strength antiperspirant, which is particularly helpful for people who sweat a lot in the underarms, palms of hands or soles of their feet.

  2. Make sure to apply your antiperspirant at night, as it will help plug your sweat ducts better at that time, rather than in the morning.

  3.  Try Botox injections, which block the signals that turn on the body’s sweat glands at the injection spot.

Your Next Summer Read Is A Novel About Lonely People Grasping For Connections

It should feel like too much to smash together a book about undiagnosable illnesses and New Age alternative remedies with a book about a New Age relationship experiment run by a narcissistic celebrity with a book about the dehumanizing gig economy with a book about growing up under Voluntaryist religious fundamentalism. The genius of Catherine Lacey lies in the fact that her new book, The Answers, doesn’t feel like too much; the pieces are bizarre and timely and fit together like puzzle pieces into a somehow timeless examination of humanity.

Lacey’s heroine has been backed into a corner. Raised by fundamentalist Christians in a rural home, she had no official documents or real contact with the outside culture until she left home as a teenager and moved in with an aunt, who renamed her from “Junia” to “Mary.” Now in New York, she’s drifted out of touch with her family. She has one dear friend, who has left on a mysterious quest of self-fulfillment. She has a job at a travel agency that barely keeps the lights on. And she has a mysterious, debilitating illness with no diagnosis. She sees doctors and specialists as her symptoms shift and worsen, but no one can put a finger on the root cause. Finally, she’s found a treatment that works ― PAKing, an alternative therapy that seems similar to reiki ― but that demands significant out-of-pocket expenditures.

So she decides, like so many young people crushed by debt and lack of opportunity today, to find a side hustle.

In another novel, that side hustle might have been driving for a ride-share or nannying the children of New York’s elite. In Lacey’s universe, nothing is so obvious. Mary responds to a mysterious help-wanted ad, then finds herself auditioning for a lavishly paid gig as, it turns out, the Emotional Girlfriend to movie star Kurt Sky. She’s both a guinea pig in an experiment to better understand the ideal relationship and an emotional laborer hired to keep the self-involved Kurt satisfied romantically. Scientists behind the scenes may be pulling the levers, but he’s providing the funding and reaping the immediate benefits of having carefully cast girlfriends to provide him with emotional support; for sex, for silent companionship, for arguing and for intellectual conversation.

This setup, dazzling and yet sinister as it may be, has little excitement for Mary. Being deprived of intimacy after her one relationship fell apart and her one friend disappeared on her seems to make her less particular about who she gives her time to ― besides, she needs the money. But she doesn’t much enjoy listening to Kurt’s emotional turmoil and responding in the directed fashion. He, on the other hand, finds himself fascinated by her quiet, submissive demeanor and her ability to listen with apparent interest for hours. (Naturally the Intellectual Girlfriend, with her frequently expressed opinions and education, soon wearies him.) He demands more and more of her time; soon, the experiment has transformed from a weird side gig to an all-consuming lifestyle that demands her to alienate herself from her own emotional needs to be what her boss asks. Still desperate to finish her PAK therapy, she clings to the unsettling but well-paying job.

As the novel progresses, we move in and out of Mary’s perspective to hear from Kurt, who muses on his failed past relationships and the movie he’s been trying to perfect in edits for 10 years; his obsessively devoted personal assistant, Matheson, who resents Kurt’s increasing dependence on Mary; and other women who participate in the project, particularly Ashley. A boxer with a burning grudge, she agrees to be Kurt’s Anger Girlfriend, only to find herself drawn back into a youthful trauma that threatens to blow up the whole experiment.

Lacey’s prose radiates elegance beneath its unassuming, unflashy surface; there’s nary a maladroit word or an unrevealing detail. She skillfully balances a truly absurd array of hot-button topics and weird narrative twists, playing them off each other virtuosically to weave a surreal-feeling story with deeply pragmatic concerns: How do we come to know ourselves? How do we become part of our community? What should we sacrifice to give a partner what they need? What should we demand from each other? Can a relationship be satisfying to us without dehumanizing our partner? How do we reconcile our personal fulfillment with the increasingly all-encompassing demands of simply staying alive in this economy? What are the limits of technology and science to provide us with happiness?

The Answers offers no answers, of course. Instead, in its stark portraits of bewildered, alienated people, it lays bare the unresolvable paradoxes of need that we all hold in our hearts.

The Bottom Line:

Lacey searches for the unanswerable human questions that drive us in her novel of lonely, lost New Yorkers grasping for connection in alienated modern society.

What other reviewers think:

NYT: “This is a novel of intellect and amplitude that deepens as it moves forward, until you feel prickling awe at how much mental territory unfolds.”

Kirkus: “With otherworldly precision and subtle wit, Lacey creates a gently surreal dreamscape that’s both intoxicating and profound.”

Who wrote it?

Catherine Lacey has written one previous novel, Nobody Is Ever Missing. She has won a Whiting Award and was selected as one of Granta’s Best Young American Writers.

Who will read it?

Fans of fiction that blends the surreal with realism, such as Murakami.

Opening lines:

“I’d run out of options. That’s how these things usually happen, how a person ends up placing all her last hopes on a stranger, hoping that whatever that stranger might do to her would be the thing she needed done to her.

For so long I had been a person who needed other people to do things to me, and for so long no one had done the right thing to me, but already I’m getting ahead of myself. That’s one of my problems, I’m told, getting ahead of myself, so I’ve been trying to find a way to get behind myself, to be slow and quiet with myself like Ed used to be. But of course I can’t quite make it work, can’t be exactly who Ed was to me.”

Notable passage:

“I looked at his face in the pale dawn, sleeping or just still, and I let myself completely feel the pain of missing a person who no longer exists. Not missing a person who has died, not mourning (I had yet to feel actual grief), but the strain of trying to see the person I’d fallen in love with inside the person he had become. Now I know this just comes with love, that there’s no way to avoid seeing a person gradually erased or warped by time, but the first time I realized this with Paul ― it felt apocryphal.”

One Of The ‘Real People’ From That Chevy Commercial Speaks Out

How could one brand have all that J.D. Power?

That’s essentially the question Chevrolet has been asking America for quite some time now, with their ubiquitous commercial series that features “Real People. Not Actors.” The recurring conceit of these ads involves a Chevy spokesman, Potsch Boyd, bragging to normal people (just like you) about how many J.D. Power awards Chevy has won.

The very regular “not actors” then jump and scream and laugh and express how cool the Chevy brand is these days. It’s very uncomfortable to watch.

You’ve seen these ads. You’ve hated these ads. You’ve wished these ads would go away.

But you’ve probably also wondered how “real” these “not actors” are, especially since their emotions and reactions often seem highly strange and unbelievable.

Thankfully, one of the “real people” just broke their NDA and spoke to The A.V. Club about the whole experience. The person did the interview on the condition of anonymity, but The A.V. Club claimed they did a “a thorough background check.”

The whole Q&A is worth a read, as there are many funny moments that came out of creating this commercial, but here’s the basic rundown.

Everyone was just really confused. I felt nervous. It was weird.
A Chevy “Real Person”

A nondescript agency recruited this man on the street and asked if he was interested in participating in paid market research. He agreed, and for a promised $ 200 went to the Los Angeles Convention Center having no idea he was about to be in a Chevy commercial. The same day as filming, a porn awards show was taking place at the center and so he thought that’s what he was going to be a part of when he arrived.

He then waited around in a big, dark room with the other future “real people,” still having no idea what his task was. With all the confusion, he had the thought, “Oh, I might get murdered.”

Eventually, doors opened to reveal the brightly lit room seen in the commercial. Spokesman Boyd was already there, just silently smiling. Apparently, he didn’t really ever stop smiling.

Here’s the person’s explanation of the first few moments:

[The spokesperson] just said, “Hey, guys!” as we walked in, and it was another long walk to get over to where he was standing in complete silence. Everyone was just really confused. I felt nervous. It was weird.

Then, a cameraperson showed up and it was evident that this was for a commercial. Later, the “real people” would realize there were many other hidden cameras on set. In any case, once the NDA-breaker’s group realized they were going to be on TV, a magical spell seemed to be cast over them.

Here’s a hilarious explanation of the effect:

It was weird because, once we got in there, he didn’t tell us where to stand or anything. He didn’t point at anything. We just magically got in that line of four people horizontally right in front of him. It was like they had this weird power.

When I was talking to people in the lobby, no one seemed that enthusiastic about anything. The second we got in there, it was like magically everyone was the world’s biggest Chevrolet fan. I can’t stress enough that I’m a real person and not an actor. None of these people were actors, because I asked them what they all did for a living. They suddenly became these perfect spokespeople when this guy started asking questions, like, “What’s the first word that comes to your mind when you think about Chevy?” Literally, the guy next to me was like, “Freedom.” [Laughs.] He was suddenly so patriotic. He was like, “American-made cars. Quality.” All of these people were spewing out these buzzwords.

The whole thing took about two hours. Chevy ended up paying the person $ 150 in Visa gift cards and promised to mail $ 50 later. (This was a baffling payment method to him, as well.) The “real people” that ended up having speaking roles in the commercial would eventually get more money, something that may also explain why everyone is so eager to be enthusiastic.

As The News Wheel reported in 2015, some of the “real people” were actors by profession, a fact explained away by a GM representative who claimed this was just because they scouted for people in LA. Struggling actors who know that faking enthusiasm could yield a better paycheck could explain this.

It’s a popular opinion that these commercials are pretty painful to watch, so much so that just one of the many people parodying the ads has earned millions of views. All at Chevy’s expense.

Here’s one of those parodies:

After being a part of the commercial, the NDA-breaker still doesn’t understand what the J.D. Power award is supposed to mean. He told The A.V. Club:

I’m still not really sure what a J.D. Power And Associates Award is, and they explained it to us. I didn’t retain it at all. But I am genuinely surprised to hear that Chevy has won more unimportant awards than any other car manufacturer.

No matter how long these inane commercials continue (and like cockroaches, they will probably outlive us all), the world may never know who or what J.D. Power is or represents.

Maybe ― speculating widely here ― J.D. Power is the pseudonym of famously reclusive author J.D. Salinger, who actually cheated death and spends his days writing the next great American car reviews, like, “A Perfect Day for Bananafish … and Chevy Products.” Nothing makes sense in this world. Especially these commercials, though.

More Than 5,000 People Complained To The FCC About Colbert’s ‘Homophobic’ Trump Joke

Earlier this month, Stephen Colbert referred to President Donald Trump as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “cock holster” in a fiery, if tongue-in-cheek, rant that instantly sparked controversy.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced May 19 that it had received over 5,700 complaints from viewers about the May 1 episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” with most condemning the host’s “cock holster” joke, Politico reports

The nature of the individual complaints varied widely. Still, many pinpointed what they saw as the homophobia underlying Colbert’s words. “By using accusations of being gay as an insult,” one Illinois viewer wrote, “it implied that there is something wrong with being gay.” A New York felt similarly, telling the FCC, “I really thought we left this kind of bigotry in the wastebin of history. Instead I have to endure it during dinner with me and my husband’s son.”

Viewers from both sides of the political spectrum were equally angered by the Colbert rant, even if their complaints differed in their specifics. “I know all you Commie shills hate this president,” one complaint from Florida read, “but it is your job to keep these Leftists from dragging this nation further into the gutter.”

There’s no word yet on what impact the volume of complaints will have. On May 5, FCC chairman Ajit Pai said his agency had launched an investigation into Colbert’s Trump joke and would “apply the law fairly and fully.”

“I have had a chance to see the clip now and so, as we get complaints, and we’ve gotten a number of them, we are going to take the facts that we find,” Pai said on The Rich Zeoli Show on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, “and we are going to apply the law as it’s been set out by the Supreme Court and other courts and we’ll take the appropriate action.”

If the commission determines that Colbert violated FCC regulations, Pai added, he’d likely face a fine.

Two days after the “cock holster” remark aired, Colbert himself addressed the controversy. On the May 3 installment of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” he said he didn’t regret making the comments but would “change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be” if he could.

He also shrugged off the claims of homophobia. “I just want to say for the record, life is short,” he said, “and anyone who expresses their love for another person, in their own way, is to me, an American hero.”

The public backlash, meanwhile, seems to have had little impact on Colbert’s ratings. Viewership of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” has been boffo in recent weeks, CNN reports. The week following the controversy turned out to be a real win for the show, which beat its closest rival, “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” by its highest margin (410,000 viewers) since September 2015.

23 Brilliant Lines From Netflix’s “Dear White People”

“Dear White People,” the new Netflix series based on the film of the same name, has become one of the most talked about new shows this year.

The series, created by Justin Simien, takes a humorous and unflinching look at racial politics by following the lives of several black students at a fictional and predominantly white Ivy League school.

The show has sparked some interesting conversations about issues like blackface, interracial dating, colorism, and police brutality, to name a few. All of these issues are brought forth through amazingly witty, sharp, and perceptive writing, making for some of the best one-liners on any screen in years. Below, we’ve compiled some of the funniest, most poignant, perceptive and downright brilliant lines from the show’s first season. Check it out (spoiler alert):

1. SAM: Dear white people, here’s a little tip: When you ask someone who looks ethnically different ‘what are you?’ the answer is usually a person about to slap the shit out of you.” (Ep. 1)

2. JOELLE: You’re not Rashida Jones biracial, you’re Tracee Ellis Ross biracial ― people think of you as black! (Ep. 1)

3. NARRATOR: Ah, the racially insensitive party. A mainstay of primarily white institutions since time immemorial. A chance for the white majority to celebrate marginalized communities by reinforcing the very stereotypes that oppress them. (Ep. 2)

4. SAM: I like my men like I like my coffee ― full-bodied and preferably with Kenyan origins. (Ep. 4)

5. COCO: Dear white people, having a black vibrator does not count as an interracial relationship. (Ep. 4)

6. SAM: Equal? You could only vote if you owned land and didn’t have a vagina. (Ep. 5)

7. JOELLE: Sometimes being carefree and black is an act of revolution. (Ep. 5)

8. REGGIE: I plan on marrying me a dark-skinned sister; have the ashiest black babies possible. (Ep. 5)

9. SAM:  Dear white people, our skin color is not a weapon. You don’t have to be afraid of it.  (Ep. 6)

10. COCO: As soon as you double down on your blackness, they will double down on their bullshit… Who cares if you’re woke or not if you’re dead? (Ep. 6)

11. REGGIE: Gun in my face, your hate misplace, light-skinned, white skin but for me not the right skin. (Ep. 6)

12. REGGIE: Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For some of us maybe. There’s nothing self-evident about it. (Ep. 6)

13. SAM: The whole movement is about pain. That’s why we’re out in these streets. (Ep. 6)

14. SAM: We’re going to bring together every marginalized group on this campus and demand a protest! (Ep. 7)

15. COCO: I like him black, actually black as hell and unapologetic about it. (Ep. 7)

16. NARRATOR: If only the real world had a block button. (Ep. 8)

17. TROY: So you didn’t have a man around to show you what’s what?

LIONEL: Yup. Which is why I chose to be gay… kidding. That’s not how it works. (Ep. 8)

18. NEIKA: You’re here to show that not all black students want to burn this place down. You’re props. (Ep. 9)

19. SAM: Troy’s got you drinking his Kool-Aid… or his daddy’s Kool-Aid. But guess what? I ain’t thirsty, girl. (Ep. 9)

20. COCO: I’m smarter than you. I’m more ambitious than you. Thirty years from now when I am the second black female president, all you’ll be able to do is think about me and I won’t remember your name. (Ep. 9)

21. SAM: Have you been to a Winchester townhall? They’re so regimented even Kim Jung Un’s like ‘guys, chill, let somebody talk.’ (Ep. 10)

22. SAM: So because I call it out, racism is my fault?!

23. KURT: The truth is, you like things to be fucked up so you can have a machine to rage against, Sharpton.

SAM: None of this is a threat to you because you already have the power,            Kurt. Can’t you see that? (Ep. 10)

People Had A Lot To Say About Ryan Gosling’s Collar On ‘Blade Runner’ Poster

Posters for the “Blade Runner” sequel, “Blade Runner 2049,” were released on Thursday and the response to them has been… mostly hilarious.

The original 1982 film starring Harrison Ford received critical acclaim so this sequel, starring Ford and Ryan Gosling, has a lot to live up to.

However, one poster of Gosling’s character in a high-collared coat is giving people more to say about the film’s wardrobe than about its plot.

The poster looks like this:

Here’s what Twitter said about Gosling’s “Officer K” outfit:

Ford’s poster wasn’t hit with as much mockery, though he is notably sans collar or coat at all:

Blade Runner 2049 is slated for release on Oct. 6.

This K-Pop Band With No Korean Members Is Making People Angry

An unconventional K-pop group is attempting to dominate the Korean music industry, but the genre’s fans aren’t exactly singing its praises.

EXP Edition, a K-pop boy band that doesn’t have a single Korean member, just released a new music video for their song “Feel Like This.” While the mostly-white, American group’s video made headlines, the release also opened up a discussion about the band’s place in the Korean music industry.

After seeing the band sing in Korean and adopt K-pop style, Asians across the internet definitely weren’t afraid to sound off on the subject. And let’s just say, many of them won’t be listening to EXP Edition on repeat.

The band, which calls itself “a fresh hybrid of K-pop,” actually started out back in 2014 as South Korean artist Bora Kim’s master’s degree thesis project at Columbia University. Kim explained that her goal was to explore identity politics, masculinity and other topics.

“I was thinking about cultural flow, or the relationship of dominant culture and peripheral culture, and how that is interwoven with one’s identity or one’s national identity,” Kim, who initially pulled in friends Karin Kuroda and Samantha Shao to help with the band, explained. “I wanted to see what would happen if I made American boys into K-pop performers, by teaching them how to sing in Korean and act like Korean boys, and complicate this flow/appropriation even more…”

But since then, the band has grown to be much more than a college project and its members have even relocated to Seoul to infiltrate the Korean market. With this new single, however, dedicated K-pop fans don’t seem happy with the American group. Many called EXP out for appropriating Korean culture, since none of the members have Korean roots. In fact, shortly before moving to Korea, they admitted that they knew very little about the culture.

“We haven’t been introduced to much of the culture,” Koki Tomlinson, the sole Asian, half-Japanese member of the group, told Fusion last year. “We have a very basic understanding of it, just because we’ve really only listened to K-pop.”

Several also criticized the group’s performance quality, asking why the band didn’t incorporate any choreography, an iconic element to K-pop, in their video. But one of the most vocalized criticisms was the way in which the all-American group decided to enter an Asian music industry when Asian artists and those of Asian descent barely ever make it in America’s.

Indeed, Asian artists have had a tough time succeeding as they’ve often been rejected for “looking” Asian. Harlemm Lee, an artist of Chinese and Filipino descent, won the NBC reality show “Fame” in 2003 and even scored a record contract. However, he still struggled to have a successful career.

“In terms of finding an advocate in the industry, the Asian thing has been the critical factor,” Lee told The New York Times years ago. “You don’t fit.”

The Korean music industry is one place where Asians dominate and some K-pop fans feel there’s a double standard at play when a completely non-Korean band just slides in.

The criticisms haven’t deterred Kim and her crew from continuing their work, though. She told The Huffington Post in an email that she admits cultural appropriation is an issue, but insists that’s not what her group is doing. She feels the band isn’t appropriating because they are immersed in the K-pop scene.

“K-pop has become an important part of our identity (professionally and personally) and that no one can deny. We are living, breathing, creating K-pop, collaborating with people in the K-pop industry every day,” she said. “So to conclude, if you ask me if we’re appropriating K-pop, I’m going to say No … We are already genuinely a part of K-pop.”

Well, if the new music video serves as any indication of their style and vibe, the band is undeniably off to a rocky start.

There’s A Japanese Word For People Who Buy More Books Than They Can Actually Read

Book hoarding is a well-documented habit.

In fact, most literary types are pretty proud of the practice, steadfast in their desire to stuff shelves to maximum capacity. They’re not looking to stop hoarding, because parting with pieces of carefully curated piles is hard and stopping yourself from buying the next Strand staff pick is even harder. So, sorry Marie Kondo, but the books are staying.

The desire to buy more books than you can physically read in one human lifetime is actually so universal, there’s a specific word for it: tsundoku. Defined as the stockpiling of books that will never be consumed, the term is a Japanese portmanteau of sorts, combining the words “tsunde” (meaning “to stack things”) and “oku” (meaning “to leave for a while”).

We were reminded of the term this week, when Apartment Therapy published a primer for those looking to complete book-hoarder rehab. Several blogs have written on the topic before, though, surfacing new and interesting details about the word so perfect for book nerds everywhere.

While most who’ve written on the topic of tsundoku use the word to describe the condition of book hoarding itself, The LA Times used the term as a noun that describes the person suffering from book stockpiling syndrome, or “a person who buys books and doesn’t read them, and then lets them pile up on the floor, on shelves, and assorted pieces of furniture.”

Tsundoku has no direct synonym in English, Oxford Dictionaries clarified in a blog post, defining the word as “the act of leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piling it up together with other such unread books.” An informative subreddit provides even more context, explaining that “the tsundoku scale” ranges from just one unread book to a serious hoard. “Everyone is most likely to be ‘tsundokursed’ one way or the other,” it warns.

According to Quartz, tsundoku has quite a history. It originated as a play on words in the late 19th century, during what is considered the Meiji Era in Japan. At first, the “oku” in “tsunde oku” morphed into “doku,” meaning “to read,” but since “tsunde doku” is a bit of a mouthful, the phrase eventually condensed into “tsundoku.” And a word for reading addicts was born.

Speaking of addictions ― the term “bibliomania” emerged in England around the same time as “tsundoku.” Thomas Frognall Dibdin, an English cleric and bibliographer, wrote Bibliomania, or Book Madness: A Bibliographical Romance in the 1800s, outlining a fictional “neurosis” that prompted those suffering from it to obsessively collect books of all sorts.

Bibliomania has a dark past, documented more as a pseudo-illness that inspired real fear than a harmless knack for acquiring books we won’t have time to read. “Some collectors spent their entire fortunes to build their personal libraries,” Lauren Young wrote for Atlas Obscura. “While it was never medically classified, people in the 1800s truly feared bibliomania.”

Tsundoku seems to better capture the lighter side of compulsive book shopping, a word that evokes images of precariously stacked tomes one good breeze away from toppling over. While there’s no English equivalent quite as beautiful, no one’s stopping you from incorporating the Japanese word into your regular vocabulary.

“As with other Japanese words like karaoke, tsunami, and otaku, I think it’s high time that tsundoku enter the English language,” Open Culture wrote in 2014. “Now if only we can figure out a word to describe unread ebooks that languish on your Kindle. E-tsundoku? Tsunkindle?”

Bookseller Plans To Open A Bookstore In D.C. By And For People Of Color

For 16 years, Angela Maria Spring has worked as a bookseller ― most recently as the manager of Washington, D.C.’s iconic Politics and Prose bookstore. Now she’s planning to open her own store, Duende District, which will be run by a deliberately diverse staff.

On April 10, Spring launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of a pop-up Duende District bookstore to operate at the 2017 Artomatic festival. Spring, who is Latinx and the daughter of a Panamanian immigrant, felt inspired to open the intentionally multicultural bookstore after several years at Politics and Prose. Though D.C. is a highly diverse city, she found herself in a primarily white neighborhood, working with white booksellers and catering to a largely white clientele.

“For five years, almost every other Latino I saw was cleaning somebody’s house or yard, taking care of someone’s baby or cooking someone’s meal,” she wrote on Kickstarter.

By launching her own bookstore, Spring hoped to give opportunities to colleagues of color and to build a literary space that put multiculturalism and diversity front and center. Creating a browsing space that’s “owned, operated, and managed by a majority of people of color,” she says in her Kickstarter video, can create a “high-quality, welcome experience for everyone.”

A Publishers Weekly piece on the bookstore points to “the current political environment” as one motivation for Spring’s bold move. On the Kickstarter page, she describes the new venture as “part of my resistance effort.” But also, she told PW, the dazzling whiteness of the bookselling world was a long-time concern.

As with every facet of the publishing industry, bookselling isn’t as diverse as the community it ostensibly serves ― an issue writer Roxane Gay addressed in a keynote at the American Booksellers Association Winter Institute in January, in which she argued that publishing and bookselling gatekeepers “don’t really want to do what it takes, to invest money” to foster true diversity.

Even apparent commitments to improving representation, may only hide still-severe problems. A significant percentage of children’s books today are about characters of color ― over 20 percent. But the percentage of children’s books created by non-white authors is much lower, suggesting that while white authors have changed their approach toward race, significant barriers remain for writers of color.

Spring’s bookstore, and its Kickstarter campaign, encourage book lovers to get serious about diversity by supporting a business that doesn’t just welcome a diverse customer base, but gives power and voice to underserved communities.

Check out the Duende District Kickstarter.

More Than 5 Million People Have Watched This Mom’s Powerful Spoken-Word Poem

A spoken-word poem has gone viral for its refreshing look at how difficult it is for many moms to be seen as more than mothers.

In a video of her spoken-word poem that the United Kingdom’s Channel 4 News posted on March 30, poet Hollie McNish explains that she only feels like an individual at night in the few hours she gets before she goes to sleep and wakes up to do it all over again.

“Cinderella’s clock strikes at midnight each time. My clock strikes loudly at nine,” she said in her poem, which has been viewed more than 5.8 million times as of Friday.

McNish rhythmically described the feelings of being described as “so-and-so’s mum” and the idea of mothers being “underpaid, overworked” as “snot rags” and “milk makers.” She also emphasized the strength of mothers, but stressed that crying every once in a while isn’t a sign of weakness.

“Someone said that moms are the rocks that never crumble,” she said. “I don’t think that’s true ‘cause I do.”

At the end of her poem, McNish reminds her fellow mothers that their “stories are many.” And the poem in its entirety proves that their stories are worth telling.

Real People Had Real Sex In These NSFW Fashion Ads

Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta of design label Eckhaus Latta recently ignited controversy with images from their new spring 2017 campaign.

The designers got real people (not professional models) to actually have sex for the ads, where pixelated sections leave little to the imagination:

In an interview W magazine, Eckhaus and Latta spoke about the campaign that ultimately ended up crashing their website. Shot by photographer Heji Shin, the ads are supposed to have a non-pornographic approach

“We were thinking of how we were using sexuality, the relationship between fashion advertising and sexuality—and in very direct terms saying sex sells,” Shin told W.

Latta added, “We weren’t covering people in oil—that’s actually their sweat, you know? We’ve really wanted to play with the principles around advertising, but it had to be authentic and it had to be real people. If it was simulated, it would have really lost the whole intention behind the shoot.”

The hardest part about shooting the campaign was getting people to participate, but with the help of friends and a specific casting director, it all came together within about six months.

“[The participants] were all excited about it, and wanted to do it—and to do it in the context of the Eckhaus Latta ad campaigns. It was actually pretty real,” Shin told W. “Of course, sometimes you have to stage small things, like putting hair on another side. But, other things are very hard to stage—with guys, for example, you have to be quick.”

Despite the supposed commentary on “sex sells” and the intended non-pornagraphic nature of the photos, it’s still extremely difficult to see the Eckhaus Latta clothes that the models are wearing. Perhaps the website crashed because people were trying to see what the spring ‘17 clothes actually looked like?

This Is How Much People Hate ‘Caillou’

Caillou is a pretty notorious figure in the parenting world. Although many kids love the little bald guy and his eponymous show, he’s often the bane of their parents’ existence.

From the main character’s whiny voice to the annoying theme song to the seemingly pointless storylines, there are many reasons “Caillou” gets on grownups’ nerves. In fact, it appears the “Caillou” hate has been growing over the years thanks to internet culture.

Here are some of the many ways people have expressed their hatred for Caillou.

These people made Facebook pages dedicated to how much they despise the show and its protagonist.

This guy made a hilarious video analyzing everything that’s wrong with the show.

“Where is the ground?! Where are the walls?! Who drew this shit?!”

This mom figured out how to block “Caillou” from Netflix.

These moms went on camera to share how much they despise the “bald little asshole” and his incessant whining.

“Where did he come from? And who created him? And do they like him in Canada?”

These people rewrote the show’s theme song to accurately reflect how they feel about it.

“My voice sounds like nails on glass. You wish you could kick my ass.”

These people used the PBS defunding proposal as an opportunity to suggest simply cutting “Caillou” instead.

This famous TV host used a segment about net neutrality to say “Fuck you!” to Caillou.

This dad compiled 18 reasons why parents can’t stand the show.

Including the “nightmarish” color scheme, “annoyingly complicated story structure” and everything about Caillou’s face.

This mom came up with 29 reasons.

Reason #2: “Once you hear the super freaking annoying theme song, it will play on a loop in your head for the next four hours and make you want to stab yourself with a fork.”

This teacher may never have children because of the show.

This webcomic artist may never have any more children for the same reason.

This dad wrote a 500-word blog post dedicated to his distaste for the show.

“We follow this pseudo-Charlie-Brown as he whines, kvetches, barks orders at people, hurts himself, throws tantrums, causes trouble and generally shares his self-centered, pathetic, purposeless outlook on life to thousands of kids all over the world.”

This father and daughter duo created a special YouTube storybook to expose the real Caillou ― “a whiny little puke.”

George Takei Joked About Running For Congress And People Got Very Excited

Actor George Takei caused a moment of extreme excitement early Saturday morning when he posted an article from The Daily Buzz on his Twitter account that said he was planning to run for Congress and against Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) in 2018.

Some Twitter users noted that the tweet had been posted just minutes into April 1, and about eight hours later Takei confirmed that, yes, this was an April Fools’ Day joke.

But between the time when Takei posted the tweet and when he clarified that he was joking, people started to get extremely excited by the idea of the beloved “Star Trek” star running for Congress and some of them were quite famous too.

This tweet probably best summarizes the sentiments of his fans when he revealed the joke:

People Are Pretty Much Convinced This Confiscated Gun Came From A Time Traveler

The Baltimore Police Department shared a Facebook post on Thursday that, for the most part, was pretty run-of-the-mill police fodder.

It stated that police had pulled over a man and discovered a loaded handgun, along with some drugs, inside his car. Since the man’s criminal record prohibits him from owning a gun, cops confiscated it.

The only thing out of the ordinary? The gun looks like this:

The weapon’s old-timey-looking appearance was not lost on social media.

“This is the first gun you have access to in Grand Theft Auto: Gettysburg,” one of the top comments on the photo reads. Tens of thousands of comments follow, many of them in the same vein.

You can read the rest of the excellent comments here.

The Baltimore Police Department could not be reached for comment by The Huffington Post for more details on the gun, or whether they would be reopening the investigation into President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.

11 Times The Oscars Honored White Actors For Playing People Of Color

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made strides to become more diverse in recent years, but there’s a long road ahead to make up for the organization’s long legacy of exclusion.

Throughout its 90-year history, the Academy has not only failed to recognize the talent of many actors and actresses of color but awarded whitewashed roles in the industry.

Hollywood has consistently given diverse roles to white actors over the years; in fact, quite recently Tilda Swinton was cast as a Tibetan monk in 2016’s “Doctor Strange.” And the Oscars haven’t helped alleviate this long-standing issue by rewarding this kind of whitewashing.

Several notable white actors have been nominated for an Oscar for portraying people of color through the years. Many of them have actually won.

Take a look at 11 times the academy has nominated actors for blackface, brownface and yellowface.

Jennifer Connelly, “A Beautiful Mind”

Jennifer Connelly portrayed Alicia, the wife of mathematician John Nash in 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind.” In real-life, Alicia Nash (born Alicia Lardé) was Salvadorian. The actress, who has no Latin American roots, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role.

William Hurt, “Kiss of the Spider Woman”

In “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” William Hurt plays Luis Molina, a queer South American prisoner. The film was adapted from Argentine author Manuel Puig’s novel of the same name. Hurt, a white man who doesn’t identify as LGBTQ or Latino, won an Oscar for Best Actor for the role in 1985.

Linda Hunt, “The Year of Living Dangerously”

Actress Linda Hunt won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1983 for portraying Billy Kwan in “The Year of Living Dangerously.” In the film, Kwan is a Chinese-Australian male photographer with dwarfism working in Jakarta, Indonesia.

 Laurence Olivier, “Othello”

Shakespeare’s “Othello” is a Christian Moor, who is often portrayed as having a dark-complexion. Legendary British actor Laurence Olivier wore blackface when he portrayed Othello in the 1965 film version. The actor was nominated by The Academy in the Best Actor category for the role.

George Chakiris, “West Side Story”

Greek-American actor George Chakiris portrayed Bernardo, leader of the Puerto Rican gang The Sharks in “West Side Story.” He, as well as other white actors portraying Latino characters in the film, darkened their complexion with make-up. Chakiris won an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for the role.

Hugh Griffith, “Ben-Hur”

Hugh Griffith portrayed Sheik Ilderim, an Arab character who owns the horses Judah ends up using in his chariot race, in 1959’s “Ben-Hur.” The British actor won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this role.

Spencer Tracy, “The Old Man and the Sea”

Fans of Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea might recall the book’s titular character is a Cuban fisherman. But in the 1958 film adaptation of the novel, Spencer Tracy was given the titular role. The actor, who is not Latino, was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actor category for his role.

Yul Brynner, “The King and I”

Yul Brynner, who is mainly of Russian descent, starred as the King of Siam (present-day Thailand) in the 1956 musical “The King and I.” The actor won an Oscar in the Best Actor category for the role.

Marlon Brando, “Viva Zapata!”

Hollywood brought the story of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata to life in the 1952 film “Viva Zapata!” The titular role went to Marlon Brando, who is not Latino. The actor was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actor category for the role.

Luise Rainer, “The Good Earth”

“The Good Earth” is a 1937 film based on the historical novel of the same name, its story focuses on a family of Chinese farmers. Actress Luise Rainer wore yellowface to portray O-Lan, one of the film’s protagonists, and she took home an Oscar for Best Actress for the role.

Gale Sondergaard, “Anna and the King of Siam”

Gale Sondergaard portrayed Lady Thiang, the king’s head wife, in “Anna and the King of Siam.” The actress, who is not of Asian descent, was nominated for the role in the The Academy’s Best Supporting Actress category.

This 13-Year-Old Raised Money For Over 800 People To See ‘Hidden Figures’

At only 13 years old, aspiring astronaut and devoted “Hidden Figures” fan Taylor Richardson is leading quite the philanthropic cause.

Earlier this week, Richardson was deemed GoFundMe’s February “Hero of the Month” after raising $ 17,000 through the fundraising website for people throughout the nation to go see the hit movie. “Hidden Figures” is centered around three black women mathematicians who played a pivotal role in sending the first American into space.

“I hope [the movie] inspires them to know they can do anything they put their mind to,” Richardson told The Huffington Post earlier this week.

Thus far, Richardson and her mother have given over 800 people the opportunity to attend a free screening of the movie (with snacks) and ― for a number of them ― receive the Hidden Figures book.

Richardson said her initial infatuation with “Hidden Figures” came after her regal experience attending The White House Hidden Figures in Space Exploration event in December where the movie was screened.

“It shows me that women, and especially African-American women, can do anything a guy can do and anything a white male can do,” she said of the movie.

Richardson said her initiative to send people to free screenings initially targeted young girls, but she and her mother later decided to broaden the audience.

“We wanted to have other groups see not just what three black women did, but just to know [of our] contributions,” Richardson’s mother said.

While the two know the movie won’t compel everyone to aspire towards having a career in space, like it has with Richardson, they hope that through the Hidden Figures books, kids will at least be able to develop a heightened interest in literacy, something Richardson has regularly been working towards in her community.

When she was nine years old, Richardson said she encountered a young boy at a hospital who didn’t have easy access to books. After that, she decided to hold broke drives in her hometown in his honor called “Taylor Takes Flight With A Book.”

To date, Richardson has collected and donated over 5,000 books in Jacksonville and read to over 300 children.

She’s also worked on an anti-bullying campaign with the CEOs of Florida First Coast YMCA and Girl Scouts of Gateway Council.

But Richardson’s philanthropic trajectory isn’t what’s made her mother most proud: it’s her resilience.

“I tell people all the time: what makes me most proud of Taylor is not what you hear and all these success stories, but how she handles her failures,” her mother told HuffPost.

But the persevering spirit of Richardson ― who was bullied, held back in the second grade and once struggled with literacy ― can best captured in the way she turned around her ADHD diagnosis.

“She calls ADHD: Abundantly Different Happily Divine,” her mother said. “I hope I live to see her go Mars.”

PEOPLE Pet Vet Dr. Evan Antin Goes Wild in Sexy Photo Shoot

Yes, we called him the Sexiest Veterinarian in 2016, but Dr. Evan Antin basically threw his hat into the ring for Sexiest Man Alive contention this week with a steamy animal-themed photo shoot for Basic magazine.

In two pics Antin — a veterinarian at California’s Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital — shared on Instagram, he’s holding exotic animals (his favorite) while showing off his toned biceps. But he’s turning the pictures into teaching moments, too, educating swooning Instagram followers about his creature costars.

“I love discussing my profession but broaching the subject of wildlife conservation is so important and I’m grateful for getting the opportunity to speak on it,” the 31-year-old writes alongside a photo of himself with a large monitor lizard.

On a second pic, in which he’s wrapped in a reticulated python, he drops knowledge about the animals’ size, eating habits and senses.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Antin dished on his love of exotic animals, and the lengths he goes to find them. His latest trip was to the Philippines, where he visited a rescue organization that breeds Philippine freshwater crocodiles, among the most endangered in the world. In the past, he’s done dental work on primates in Indonesia, wrangled lizards in Botswana and watched the echidnas (spiny anteaters) of Australia. “If it has good wildlife, maybe a jungle, cool people and neat history, I’m there,” he says.

10 Things Truly Confident People Do Differently

2017-02-09-1486663049-3269831-10ThingsTrulyConfidentPeopleDoDifferentlyHP.jpeg

True confidence–as opposed to the false confidence people project to mask their insecurities–has a look all its own. One thing is certain: truly confident people always have the upper hand over the doubtful and the skittish because they inspire others and they make things happen.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.”
– Henry Ford

Ford’s notion that your mentality has a powerful effect on your ability to succeed is seen in the results of a recent study at the University of Melbourne that showed that confident people earn higher wages and get promoted more quickly than anyone else.

Indeed, confident people have a profound impact on everyone they encounter. Yet, they achieve this only because they exert so much influence inside, on themselves.

We see only their outside. We see them innovate, speak their mind, and propel themselves forward toward bigger and better things.

And, yet, we’re missing the best part.

We don’t see the habits they develop to become so confident. It’s a labor of love that they pursue behind the scenes, every single day.

And while what people are influenced by changes with the season, the unique habits of truly confident people remain constant. Their focused pursuit is driven by these habits that you can emulate and absorb:

1. They speak with certainty. It’s rare to hear the truly confident utter phrases such as “Um,” “I’m not sure,” and “I think.” Confident people speak assertively because they know that it’s difficult to get people to listen to you if you can’t deliver your ideas with conviction.

2. They seek out small victories. Confident people like to challenge themselves and compete, even when their efforts yield small victories. Small victories build new androgen receptors in the areas of the brain responsible for reward and motivation. The increase in androgen receptors increases the influence of testosterone, which further increases their confidence and eagerness to tackle future challenges. When you have a series of small victories, the boost in your confidence can last for months.

3. They exercise. A study conducted at the Eastern Ontario Research Institute found that people who exercised twice a week for 10 weeks felt more competent socially, academically, and athletically. They also rated their body image and self-esteem higher. Best of all, rather than the physical changes in their bodies being responsible for the uptick in confidence, it was the immediate, endorphin-fueled positivity from exercise that made all the difference.

4. They don’t seek attention. People are turned off by those who are desperate for attention. Confident people know that being yourself is much more effective than trying to prove that you’re important. People catch on to your attitude quickly and are more attracted to the right attitude than what, or how many, people you know. Confident people always seem to bring the right attitude.

Confident people are masters of attention diffusion. When they’re receiving attention for an accomplishment, they quickly shift the focus to all the people who worked hard to help get them there. They don’t crave approval or praise because they draw their self-worth from within.

5. They don’t pass judgment.
Confident people don’t pass judgment on others because they know that everyone has something to offer, and they don’t need to take other people down a notch in order to feel good about themselves. Comparing yourself to other people is limiting. Confident people don’t waste time sizing people up and worrying about whether or not they measure up to everyone they meet.

6. They get their happiness from within. Happiness is a critical element of confidence, because in order to be confident in what you do, you have to be happy with who you are. People who brim with confidence derive their sense of pleasure and satisfaction from their own accomplishments, as opposed to what other people think of their accomplishments.

7. They listen more than they speak.
People with confidence listen more than they speak because they don’t feel as though they have anything to prove. Confident people know that by actively listening and paying attention to others, they are much more likely to learn and grow. Instead of seeing interactions as opportunities to prove themselves to others, they focus on the interaction itself, because they know that this is a far more enjoyable and productive approach to people. If you struggle with this, emotional intelligence training can help.

8. They take risks. When confident people see an opportunity, they take it. Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, they ask themselves, “What’s stopping me? Why can’t I do that?” and they go for it. Fear doesn’t hold them back because they know that if they never try, they will never succeed.

9. They aren’t afraid to be wrong. Confident people aren’t afraid to be proven wrong. They like putting their opinions out there to see if they hold up because they learn a lot from the times they are wrong and other people learn from them when they’re right. Self-assured people know what they are capable of and don’t treat being wrong as a personal slight.

10. They celebrate other people’s successes.
Insecure people constantly doubt their relevance, and because of this, they try to steal the spotlight and criticize others in order to prove their worth. Confident people, on the other hand, aren’t worried about their relevance because they draw their self-worth from within. Instead of insecurely focusing inward, confident people focus outward, which allows them to see all the wonderful things that other people bring to the table. Praising people for their contributions is a natural result of this.

Bringing It All Together

Building confidence is a journey, not a destination. To become more confident you must be passionate in your pursuit of a greater future.

People Are Putting Makeup On Their Thighs. Is Everyone OK?

There are plenty of more pressing matters in the world to make sense of right now, but in the name of self-care, it’s important to ponder the “whys” of some smaller, non-sensical happenings on the internet.

Like, for example, the fact that people have been painting full faces of makeup on their thighs, and sharing them on Instagram

Teen Vogue spotted a phenomenon of people applying makeup on their upper thighs, and a quick Instagram search shows people are doing the same on their upper arms, as well.

There’s quite a bit of skill required to pull off some of these looks, but still ― we have to ask of the more than 1,000 Instagrammers who published arm makeup posts … why?

Perhaps it’s a way for makeup lovers to get their fix without piling makeup on their faces. Or, like the 100 layers videos and other odd beauty fads before it, perhaps the trend is just visually stimulating and fun to watch.

13 Habits Of Super Persuasive People

2017-01-19-1484866945-613915-13HabitsofSuperPersuasivePeopleHP.jpeg

Whether you’re convincing your boss to fund your project or your preschooler to put his shoes on, persuasion is a skill that’s instrumental to your success in life.

Persuasive people have an uncanny ability to get you leaning toward their way of thinking. Their secret weapon is likeability. They get you to like more than their ideas; they get you to like them.

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that being likeable comes from natural, unteachable traits that belong only to a lucky few–the good looking, the fiercely social, and the incredibly talented. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, being likeable is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

TalentSmart research data from more than a million people shows that people who possess these skills aren’t just highly likeable, they outperform those who don’t by a large margin.

We did some digging to uncover the key behaviors that emotionally intelligent people engage in that make them so persuasive. Here are the tricks of the trade that exceptionally persuasive people use to their advantage:

1. They’re pleasers. Persuasive people never win the battle only to lose the war. They know how and when to stand their ground, and yet they are constantly making sacrifices that help their cause. They are always giving in, giving ground, and doing things for other people that make them happy. Persuasive people do this because they know in the long run this wins people over. They know it’s better to be successful than it is to be “right.”

2. They aren’t pushy.
Persuasive people establish their ideas assertively and confidently, without being aggressive or pushy. Pushy people are a huge turn off. The in-your-face approach starts the recipient backpedaling, and before long, they’re running for the hills. Persuasive people don’t ask for much, and they don’t argue vehemently for their position because they know that subtlety is what wins people over in the long run. If you tend to come across as too aggressive, focus on being confident but calm. Don’t be impatient and overly persistent. Know that if your idea is really a good one, people will catch on if you give them time. If you don’t, they won’t catch on at all.

3. They aren’t mousy, either.
On the other hand, presenting your ideas as questions or as though they need approval makes them seem flawed and unconvincing. If you tend to be shy, focus on presenting your ideas as statements and interesting facts for the other party to mull over. Also, remove qualifiers from your speech. When you are trying to be persuasive, there is no room for “I think” or “It is possible that.”

4. They know their audience.
Persuasive people know their audience inside and out, and they use this knowledge to speak their audience’s language. Whether it’s toning down your assertiveness when talking to someone who is shy or cranking it up for the aggressive, high-energy type, everyone is different, and catching on to these subtleties goes a long way toward getting them to hear your point of view.

5. They paint a picture.
Research shows that people are far more likely to be persuaded by something that has visuals that bring it to life. Persuasive people capitalize on this by using powerful visual imagery. When actual images aren’t available or appropriate, these people tell vivid stories that breathe life into their ideas. Good stories create images in the mind of the recipients that are easy to relate to and hard to forget.

6. They use positive body language.
Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will engage people and open them up to your arguments. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that persuasive people use to draw others in. Positive body language will engage your audience and convince them that what you’re saying is valid. When it comes to persuasion, how you say something can be more important than what you say.

7. They smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you and believe in you, smile at them during a conversation, and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good as a result. Persuasive people smile a lot because they have genuine enthusiasm for their ideas. This has a contagious effect on everyone they encounter.

8. They acknowledge your point of view. An extremely powerful tactic of persuasion is to concede the point. Admit that your argument is not perfect. This shows that you are open minded and willing to make adjustments, instead of stubbornly sticking to your cause. You want your audience to know that you have their best interests at heart. Try using statements such as, “I see where you are coming from,” and “That makes a lot of sense.” This shows that you are actively listening to what they are saying, and you won’t just force your ideas upon them. Persuasive people allow others to be entitled to their opinions and they treat these opinions as valid. They do this because it shows respect, which makes the other person more likely to consider their point of view.

9. They ask good questions.
The biggest mistake people make when it comes to listening is failing to hear what’s being said because they are focusing on what they’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect them. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost. A simple way to avoid this is to ask a lot of questions. People like to know you’re listening, and something as simple as a clarification question shows not only that you are listening but also that you care about what they’re saying. You’ll be surprised how much respect and appreciation you gain just by asking questions.

10. They use your name.
Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. Persuasive people make certain they use others’ names every time they see them. You shouldn’t just use someone’s name only when you greet him or her. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name over the course of a conversation.

11. They form connections.
People are much more likely to accept what you have to say once they have a sense of what kind of person you are. In a negotiation study, Stanford students were asked to reach agreement in class. Without instruction of any kind, 55% of the students successfully reached agreement. However, when students were instructed to introduce themselves and share their background before attempting to reach agreement, 90% of the students did so successfully. The key here is to avoid getting too caught up in the back and forth of the negotiation. The person you are speaking with is a person, not an opponent or a target. No matter how compelling your argument, if you fail to connect on a personal level, he or she will doubt everything you say.

12. They are genuine.
Being genuine and honest is essential to being persuasive. No one likes a fake. People gravitate toward those who are genuine because they know they can trust them. It’s difficult to believe someone when you don’t know who they really are and how they really feel. Persuasive people know who they are. They are confident enough to be comfortable in their own skin. By concentrating on what drives you and makes you happy as an individual, you become a much more interesting and persuasive person than if you attempt to win people over by trying to be the person they want you to be.

13. They know when to pull back.
Urgency is a direct threat to persuasion, so tread lightly. When you try to force people to agree instantly, studies show that they are actually more likely to stand by their original opinion. Your impatience causes them to counter your arguments in favor of their own. If your position is strong, you shouldn’t be afraid to back off and give it time to sink in. Good ideas are often difficult to process instantly, and a bit of time can go a long way.

Bringing It All Together

Persuasive people are adept at reading and responding to other people. They rely heavily on emotional intelligence (EQ) to bring people to their way of thinking. With 90% of top performers high in emotional intelligence, it’s no wonder that persuasive people rely on this skill to get ahead. Add these skills to your repertoire, and you’re on your way to joining this exclusive group.

What other habits set persuasive people apart? Please share your insights in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

People Are Loving This Police Department’s Unofficial K-9 Pug

A pug pictured with his police officer human dad is stealing a lot of hearts across the internet.

“Introducing the Rochester Police Department’s new K-9: Hercules,” reads a Tuesday Facebook post from the New Hampshire department.

They note that Hercules has been “trained on how to aggressively hunt down any loose treats” and “knows how to sleep all day no matter what the weather may be.”

But he’s not really an employee of the force, Officer Geoff Moore, pictured in the photo, clarified to The Huffington Post.

“Hercules is my personal pug,” Moore said in a Facebook message. “I just thought it would be a fun post for everyone.”

Public information officer Jason Thomas said in an email that they snapped the shot after Moore’s fiancee stopped by the department with Hercules in tow. Thomas added that the photo has “truly gone viral” and had reached more than 10 million people as of Thursday.

Honestly, it’s a little disappointing to learn that Hercules isn’t a real K-9, as we were really looking forward to hearing more about his crime-fighting exploits.

That said, maybe hunting down treats is exactly the right amount of adventure for Hercules.

Ladies of London’s Caroline Stanbury Launches ‘Girly-Girl’ Furniture Collection: ‘The People Who Don’t Like It Probably Don’t Like Me’

Chairs lined in Chanel tweed, a side table cinched with the gold belt of a Tom Ford gown — Caroline Stanbury‘s designer wardrobe can now have a place in every home.

The Ladies of London star, 40, isn’t chopping up her enviable threads, of course, but her closet does serve as direct inspiration for her fashionable new home collection. “Everyone’s obsessed with my wardrobe,” says the stylist turned realty star, “so I incorporated it into my line of furniture.”

The collection, created in collaboration with London-based interior design and development firm Earlcrown, includes 12 scene-stealing pieces ranging from lacquer dining chairs for $ 855 each to a dining table in colors like pale pink, yellow and pistachio for $ 5,642.

RELATED: Ladies of London Star Caroline Stanbury Shows Off Stunning New Home in Dubai

When Stanbury and her three children moved to Dubai to be near a new business opportunity for her husband, Turkish financier Cem Habib, Earlcrown’s CEO Bianca Ladow was tasked with decorating the family’s new home in just six weeks.

“I rented my house out in the U.K. furnished, so I didn’t have any furniture,” explains Stanbury of the whirlwind decorating job. “This is a 13,000-square-foot house — and trust me, for Dubai that’s quite small — and had to completely furnish it.” She met up with Ladow and had every single piece of furniture made for the house. Their creations would become Caroline Stanbury for Earlcrown.

The collection, which includes pieces like a channel-tufted velvet vanity seat with a brass base ($ 1,701) and an angular chaise inspired by an Issey Miyake gown ($ 2,662), is unapologetically girly and a bit over the top, much like Stanbury herself, or at least her TV persona.

“I think the reason I’m known from Ladies of London is my one-liners, being a little bit out there, a little bit ridiculous,” she says. “In the world we live in today, people need a little bit of release, to look at a bubble and go, ‘I love that. It’s fun and it’s pretty and it’s exciting.’ And if you look at the furniture, I think it’s all of those things. It makes me happy to look at it.”

But she’s quick to point out that you don’t have to be a fan of hers to enjoy her creations for the home: the pieces are completely customizable, so those weary of the pastel hues can still enjoy the luxe-looking shapes and finishes. “You don’t like my colors? Change it to whatever you like,” she says. Adding, “I’m Marmite anyway” — a reference to the divisive English condiment. “The people who don’t like it probably don’t like me. Hopefully there will be a lot of people who love it.”

Duchess Kate Nails Why People Don’t Seek Mental Health Help

The Duchess of Cambridge is yet again schooling the world on negative mental health stereotypes.

The duchess, along with Prince William and Prince Harry, spoke out about how stigma prevents people with mental illness from seeking support. The brief speech by the former Kate Middleton was part of an event in London on Tuesday for Heads Together, the royals’ mental health charity.

“The challenge that so many people have is not knowing how to take that first step of reaching out to another person for help. Admitting that they are not coping,” she said. “Fear, or reticence, or a sense of not wanting to burden another, means that people suffer in silence ― allowing the problem to grow larger and larger unchecked.

Kate couldn’t have summed it up better. Too often shame silences those with a mental health condition. And what’s worse is that it could be damaging to that person’s health: Research shows that the misconceptions surrounding behavioral health conditions often stand in the way of people getting professional treatment.

Approximately one in four adults globally experience a mental health issue in a given year. That number increases when you factor in children. Experts say anxiety disorders among kids are one of the most common pediatric problems

This is another mental health issue the royals are hoping to tackle. Last year, Kate penned an essay for The Huffington Post U.K. where she addressed the consequences that come with ignoring a child’s psychological well-being.

“The mental health of our children must be seen as every bit as important as their physical health,” she wrote. “For too long we have been embarrassed to admit when our children need emotional or psychiatric help, worried that the stigma associated with these problems would be detrimental to their futures.”

If we’re being honest, we could listen to this family talk about mental health all day. Keep it up, guys!

People Across The U.S. Are Raising Money For Girls To See ‘Hidden Figures’

“Hidden Figures,” the hit film that tells the story of three black women who helped NASA send a man into orbit, has been praised for putting women of color in the spotlight.

That’s why people across the country ― teens, teachers and community leaders ― are raising money through GoFundMe to ensure young girls can see the movie.

One of those people is Taylor Richardson, a 13-year-old aspiring astronaut from Florida, who wants to send 100 girls to see “Hidden Figures” at a theater in Jacksonville, Florida. She also wants to raise money on GoFundMe for the girls to have snacks and get a copy of the “Hidden Figures” book.

Richardson first saw the movie at a screening at the White House and has since seen it three more times. She said the film was “amazing.”

“I cried, I laughed, I got angry and then got determined to not let others’ impressions of me because of the color of my skin impact how my life will be,” she told The Huffington Post. “These black women did something I never knew about, and it’s not in any history books that I’ve studied thus far.”

As of Friday, Richardson has raised $ 2,540 of her $ 2,600 goal. She found the girls she plans to take to see the film from organizations that have impacted her life like the YMCA, Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, See The Girl and Journey Into Womanhood. She wants them to go home after the movie feeling as inspired as she did.

“This movie instills that us girls can dream big and make it even when odds are against us,” she said. “Most importantly I want girls to know that, like boys, they too can excel in STEM with hard work.”

Several teachers across the country have also started GoFundMe campaigns to help send their students to see the influential film. After reaching his goal of $ 1,000, Peter Modlin will be taking girls in second, third, fourth and fifth grade who attend the Detroit elementary school where he teaches. Modlin told HuffPost he hopes the students learn to dream big after watching the movie.

“I want the girls to see this movie in hopes that a lightbulb might go off,” he said. “A lightbulb that signifies a belief in the opportunity to do or be anything they want to be, if they work hard to achieve that goal.”

Like Richardson and Modlin, Phyllis Marshall raised money on GoFundMe so local girls could see “Hidden Figures,” and has since taken them to see it.

On Jan. 7, she took 50 girls from Roberts Family Development Center in Sacramento, California, to the theater. She’s worked with the center, which is in a low-income community and provides after-school care, for years. Through GoFundMe she raised more than her $ 1,500 goal, which provided transportation, snacks and tickets to the movie. Marshall said “they loved it.”

Marshall was glad to be able to show the girls that women can succeed in science, technology and mathematics. She was especially thrilled to show them that women of color and their success deserve a place on the big screen.

“I certainly hope as many young girls get to see that movie as possible.”

Other teachers and community leaders are raising money for kids to see “Hidden Figures, too. Check out their campaigns below.

What Sex Therapists Tell People Whose Partners Don’t Want Sex

Being in a relationship with someone who’s disinterested in sex can feel incredibly lonely. A discrepancy in desire is more common than most people realize, though.

What’s the best way to address it with your spouse? Below, sex therapists share the advice they give people with higher sex drives than their partners.

1. Be honest with your spouse about your needs.

Don’t shut your partner out and quietly suffer through your sexual frustration. The first step you should take to improve your sex life is to tell your S.O. that you wish you were intimate more frequently, said Keeley Rankin, a sex therapist in San Francisco, California.

“See how your spouse responds,” she said. “Listen to what they say, feel and say they want. You never know, they may want more closeness as well.”

2. Discuss the things that make sex possible and the barriers in the way.

Without asking, there’s no way of knowing why your spouse is disinterested in sex. Maybe they’re just exhausted and too stressed out by the day’s end to initiate sex. Or if they’re experiencing sexual dysfunction of some kind (premature ejaculationerectile dysfunction or a lack of vaginal lubrication, for instance), it makes sense that they’re apprehensive about initiating sex.

“You have to consider the life, emotional and physical barriers that can affect sex and shift libidos,” said Elizabeth McGrath, a sex therapist and educator who works in the Bay Area. “If your spouse has been caring for others all day, for instance, they might not feel ready for sex until they’ve had a moment to themselves to feel nourished and decompress.”

Once you’ve pinpointed some potential causes, figure out a workaround as a team; schedule a doctor’s appointment if there’s a physical barrier to sex, or give your spouse some totally kid-free “me time” if exhaustion is the problem.

3. Try seduction, not criticism or pressure.

A slight mismatch in libido can easily become a larger one if the lower-desire spouse is badgered about the issue, said Danielle Harel, a sex therapist and the co-author of Making Love Real: The Intelligent Couple’s Guide to Lasting Intimacy and Passion

The mismatch often creates a cycle where the spouse with the higher sex drive complains, compares or criticizes their partner and the partner ends up having sex out of obligation, she explained.

Instead of pressuring your spouse, “see if you can find out what turns them on the most and try seduction,” Harel said. “Try saying (and really meaning), ‘It’s fine if we don’t have sex tonight but would you be willing to just open up to see if you start to get turned on?’”

She added: “Just because you start, doesn’t mean you have to go all the way. Make sure you have this agreement with your partner.”

4. Take turns initiating intimacy.

If you’re locked into a cycle of initiation and rejection, ask your spouse if they’d be willing to initiate some form of intimacy every few days, said Moushumi Ghose, a sex therapist and author of Classic Sex Positions Reinvented.

“Take turns each day initiating some kind of touch, even if if the goal isn’t orgasm, but just non-goal oriented sexy time,” she said. “The next day, the other person initiates. This can help balance out the playing field.”

5. See if your spouse is willing to make out.

Reconnecting sexually is all about taking slow, measured steps. If your partner is willing to have a hot make-out session or just touch, be open to that, said Celeste Hirschman, a sex therapist and the co-author of Making Love Real: The Intelligent Couple’s Guide to Lasting Intimacy and Passion.

“Oftentimes, when people are asking for sex, a lot of what they want is just enthusiastic, loving connection.” Hirschman said. “Just remember: You both have to be enthusiastic about it; it won’t be fulfilling if your partner just gives you sex without being present or enjoying the experience themselves.”

6. Get outside help.

Instead of dwelling on what’s missing in the relationship, consider the bond and attraction that still exists and build on that, McGrath said.

“Explore workshops, sex education resources and sex therapy that can expand your sexual horizons,” she said. “Look at what is possible and continue to talk about what else you can do together as a team.”

7. Keep bringing your sexual energy, but in a loving, calm way.

Don’t lose heart if you’re the higher-desire partner, said Ian Kerner, a sex therapist and New York Times-bestselling author of She Comes First: The Thinking Man’s Guide to Pleasuring a Woman.

“Higher-desire partners often get frustrated and feel rejected, creating a sexual disposition that is impatient and brittle and temperamental,” he said. “This often worsens the dynamic around sex and sometimes the higher-desire partner may opt out altogether, which is equally bad.”

The best thing you can do, according to Kerner, is to “stay in it to win it. That means nurturing arousal through positive acts of intimacy.”

How the Most Successful People Deal With Their Weaknesses

Is it better to focus on your strengths or on your weaknesses? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Max Lukominskyi, CMO at Sliceplanner, on Quora:

Know your strengths. Improve them. Forget your weaknesses. Leave them.

Usually, people are so keen on being concerned with and complaining about their weaknesses that they barely remember what their strengths are.

They often switch from one activity to another, trying to get knowledge in as many spheres as possible and become all-around talents. They gather tiny bits of information in every single environment instead of concentrating on some particular one. Consequently, there is no commitment and dedication at all.

Distraction is probably one of the worst enemies of young entrepreneurs and beginners of different spheres. Staying focused and dedicated is crucial if you want to excel in your field.

As soon as your interests are formed, you learned the lesson about what you are good at and what you are not so good at. Plus, you can easily distinguish your strengths from weaknesses, it is time to choose what to focus on.

Embrace the truth. You suck at plenty of things. Nonetheless, the good thing is that you are allowed to do that. It’s alright to suck at some things. You cannot be a great expert in truly everything. Moreover, you do not need to be.

There are things you are not suited to. You can constantly suck at them. And this is perfectly fine. You can be a terrible cook, singer, programmer, writer or actor. And it does not matter as long as you are a great expert or at least a good specialist in some other field.

Have you ever seen Warren Buffet taking part in cooking battles? Have you ever noticed Bill Gates struggling in auditions of dancing show? Have you ever heard of Elon Musk taking singing lessons?

Most likely, no.

We know those people as the most successful and prominent ones in their spheres. They are brilliant entrepreneurs, investors, speakers, innovators. Nonetheless, they stay mediocre or suck at plenty of other things. Who the heck cares about their dancing and cooking skills? Whereas we are completely fascinated by their approach to the business and incredible accomplishments.

These people are geniuses. We appreciate their wisdom. We love their stories of success. We are excited with their strengths. Meanwhile, we do not care about their weaknesses. Neither do they!

This is the mindset you should adopt as well.

The secret of success is way easier than it is believed to be. Everything boils down to committed and consistent enhancement of one`s strengths.

Forget about your weaknesses. Improve your strengths.

Do not waste your most precious asset, namely time, trying to get rid of your weaknesses. Invest it in the improvement of your strengths instead. Channel all your effort and energy in the enhancement of your most powerful skills and valuable expertise.

One should waste as little effort as possible on improving areas of low competence. It takes far more energy and work to improve from incompetence to mediocrity than it takes to improve from first-rate performance to excellence

— Peter Drucker

Enhance the skills you are already good at. Improve your knowledge in the spheres you already know sufficiently a lot about. Become a great specialist. Become an expert in the field that suits you.

Set yourself up for success. Do not spend time on things that you are not good at. Focus on the one thing that will have the biggest impact.

10 Unmistakable Habits Of Utterly Authentic People

2016-12-21-1482348786-2216267-10UnmistakableHabitsofUtterlyAuthenticPeopleHP.jpeg

Oscar Wilde said, “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” Wilde made it sound so simple, but living with authenticity is a real challenge.

To live authentically, you must own your actions and ensure that they align with your beliefs and needs. This can be a difficult thing to maintain when external forces pressure you to do something you’re not comfortable with or to be someone you’re not.

Most people have experienced the discomfort that comes with failing to behave authentically. Researchers from Harvard, Columbia, and Northwestern joined forces to measure this phenomenon scientifically. They found that when people failed to behave authentically, they experienced a heightened state of discomfort that’s usually associated with immorality. People who weren’t true to themselves were so distraught that they felt a strong desire to cleanse themselves physically.

It’s clear that our brains know when we’re living a lie, and like all lies, being inauthentic causes nothing but harm. But how do you start living authentically? That can be tough, especially if you’ve been playing a role for most of your adult life.

“I had no idea that being your authentic self could make me as rich as I’ve become. If I had, I’d have done it a lot earlier.” – Oprah Winfrey

Authentic people are deeply in tune with who they are and what they want. Their ability to live their life in harmony with their true selves comes from some clearly discernible habits that any of us can study and incorporate into our repertoire.

1. They help others to be their authentic selves.
Authentic people don’t expect others to play a role either. They don’t make people feel as though they have to fit into a certain mold or to project a certain image to be a part of their lives. Their commitment to being authentic gives other people the freedom to live authentically too.

2. They let go of negative people.
Authentic people have too much self-respect to put up with people who treat them badly or have ill will toward them, and they have too much respect for other people to try to change them. So they let go–not out of anger, but out of their need to be true to themselves.

3. They express their true feelings and opinions, even when they’re not popular.
Authentic people don’t live a go-along-to-get-along lifestyle. They’re simply not capable of acting in a way that’s contrary to what their principles dictate, even if there are repercussions. They prefer not to lie to other people, and they especially can’t lie to themselves. This means that they’re willing to live with the repercussions of staying true to themselves.

4. They are confident.
Much social anxiety stems from the fear we have of being “found out.” We’re afraid that somebody is going to discover that we’re not as smart, experienced, or well-connected as we pretend to be. Authentic people don’t have that fear. Their confidence comes from the fact that they have nothing to hide. Who they appear to be is who they really are.

5. They prefer deep conversations to meaningless chatter.
Eleanor Roosevelt nailed this one. She once said, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” You won’t find authentic people gossiping about others or giving their opinions on the latest celebrity scandals. They know all of that stuff is nothing more than cultural trappings, and they choose to talk about things that matter.

6. They don’t take anyone’s advice without evaluating it carefully first.
It’s not that authentic people aren’t willing to take advice; they are. But they don’t put that advice into action just because other people have. First, they’ll run it through the wringer from a critical perspective so that they can be sure it makes sense for them.

7. They don’t complain about their problems. Complaining is what you do when you think that the situation you’re in is someone else’s fault or that it’s someone else’s job to fix it. Authentic people, on the other hand, are accountable. They understand that they–and no one else–are responsible for their own lives, so there’s no point in complaining.

8. They’re internally motivated.
Authentic people don’t sit at their desks thinking, “Well, if my boss would just make this job worthwhile, I’d do a better job.” The carrot-and-stick approach just isn’t relevant to them. They’re motivated from within.

9. They make the best out of any situation.
Authentic people have a very firm grasp on reality. When things don’t go their way, they don’t get trapped in denial, and they don’t sit around whining about how things should be different. They simply take stock of the way things are and, if there’s nothing they can do to change the situation, they figure out a way to make the best of it.

10. They don’t get stressed or upset when someone doesn’t like them.
It’s never fun accepting that someone doesn’t like you, but a lot of times that discomfort comes from trying to figure out what you did wrong or how you can fix it. Authentic people don’t have that anxiety because they would never try to change themselves to influence someone else’s opinion. They accept that other people have a right to be authentic about their own feelings, even if those feelings are negative toward them.

Bringing It All Together

Living authentically is a perpetual challenge that requires emotional intelligence and yields great rewards. It’s a noble path that you won’t regret following.

What are the benefits of living authentically? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

If People Were Honest At New Year’s Eve Parties

There are two kinds of people in the world: Those of us who look forward to New Year’s Eve and those who know the night will inevitably end in disappointment.

If you fall into the latter camp, you’ll appreciate the College Humor video above. In the sketch, guests wander around a house party and say exactly what’s on their mind.

“I had to come to this party because everything I actually wanted to do was way too expensive,” one guest explains to the host as he walks in.

“Also, you’re out of alcohol and it’s only 10 p.m.,” another dude says to her. “Sounds like your problem!”

Yeah, we’re staying home this year.

People Are Cracking Up Over This Gift A Mom Got For Her Daughter

This is a gift … to the internet.

Shelby Donovan, an 18-year-old from New Orleans, Louisiana, was shocked when she opened a present from her mother in front of her entire family on Christmas.

“I kind of just stared at it for a really long time, trying to come up with anything else it could be besides a sex toy,” Donovan told The Huffington Post. “Because who wants to say that in front of their family? NO ONE.”

The gift she is referring to is this:

Naturally, her entire family began giggling as soon as she revealed the gift.

“My mom realized why we were laughing, so she says, ‘What? Do you actually think I would get you a dildo for Christmas?’” Donovan said.

It turns out the teen made the “horrible mistake” of opening and holding the gift upside down.

And it’s actually a cup holder.

“My grandma’s [reaction] was definitely the best,” Donovan said. “She described it as, ‘Business in the morning, fun at night.’”

Donovan explained to HuffPost that she asked her mom for coffee and tea for Christmas this year because she has “a horrible addiction to Starbucks.” Donovan figured if she made her own brews and carried it around in a tin tumbler, she could break her habit. Her mom figured she could make the whole transition a tiny bit smoother by getting a durable cup holder for her daughter, as well.

Her mom was wrong.

But Donovan’s impulse to post pictures of the gift to Twitter on Dec. 25 was oh so right.

The photos soon went viral, receiving over 196,000 likes and 80,000 retweets.

And Donovan has actually used the “very efficient” cup holder, though she admits she’ll only use it in her house.

“I’m almost too scared to go out in public with it since so many people on here agreed that it looks like a dildo,” she said.

Aw, try it out! It may just perk some people up.

9 Things Truly Passionate People Do Differently

2016-12-08-1481239402-1342806-9ThingsTrulyPassionatePeopleDoDifferentlyHP

Do you have enough passion in your life? Passion is the difference between playing the piano and being a pianist; it’s who you are, not just what you do. Passion makes you leap out of bed in the morning, eager to start your day.

Dr. Robert Vallerand at the University of Quebec has studied passion more than anyone, and he asserts that passion is self-defining. According to Vallerand, “Passion is a strong inclination towards a self-defining activity that people love, that they consider important, and in which they devote significant amounts of time and energy.”

“Passion is the genesis of genius.” – Galileo

It’s important to note that passion doesn’t require expertise–although there is a correlation, it’s not a given. Vallerand and two other researchers studied 187 musicians and found that those who focused on perfecting their performance–what Vallerand calls “mastery”–developed a higher level of expertise than those who focused on merely being better than other musicians. If passion defines you, it makes sense that your personal best will be about you and no one else.

So what does passion look and feel like? A great way to understand passion is to consider what makes passionate people different from everybody else.

1. Passionate people are obsessed.
Put simply, passionate people are obsessed with their muse, and I don’t mean that in an unhealthy OCD sort of way. I’m talking about a positive, healthy obsession, the kind that inspired the quote, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” No matter what else is going on, their thoughts keep returning to their passion. Not because they feel burdened and pressured by it, but because they’re just so dang excited about it. They’re obsessed with their muse because it inspires them and makes them happy.

2. They don’t waste time.
You won’t find passionate people wandering around a park all afternoon playing Pokemon Go. They don’t have time to be bothered with things that don’t matter or things that just kill time. They devote every minute available to their passion, and it’s not a sacrifice, because there’s nothing else they’d rather be doing.

3. They’re optimistic. Passionate people are always focused on what can be rather than what is. They’re always chasing their next goal with the unwavering belief that they’ll achieve it. You know how it feels when you’re looking forward to a really special event? Passionate people feel like that every day, and their optimism is driven by emotional intelligence.

4. They’re early risers.
Passionate people are far too eager to dive into their days to sleep in. It’s not that they don’t like to sleep; they’d just much rather be pursuing their passion. When the rooster crows, their minds are flooded with ideas and excitement for the day ahead.

5. They’re willing to take big risks.
How much you want something is reflected in how much you’re willing to risk. Nobody is going to lay it all on the line for something they’re only mildly interested in. Passionate people, on the other hand, are willing to risk it all.

6. They only have one speed–full tilt
. Passionate people don’t do anything half-heartedly. If they’re going, they’re going full tilt until they cross the finish line or crash. If they’re relaxed and still, they’re relaxed and still. There’s no in between.

7. They talk about their passions all the time. Again, we’re talking about people whose passions are inseparable from who they are, and you couldn’t form much of a relationship with them if they couldn’t be real about who they are, right? It’s not that they don’t understand that you don’t share their obsession; they just can’t help themselves. If they acted differently, they’d be playing a role rather than being authentic.

8. They’re highly excitable. You know those people who probably wouldn’t get excited if an alien spaceship landed in their front yard? Yeah, that’s not how passionate people operate. It’s not that they’re never calm, or even bored. It’s just that it takes less to get them excited, so they get excited more frequently and stay excited longer. One theory is that they devote their energy to just one or two things, so they make more progress, and that momentum fuels their excitement.

9. They’re all about their work. Passionate people don’t worry about work/life balance. Their work is who they are, and there’s no separating the two. It’s what they breathe, live, and eat, so there’s no such thing as leaving it at the office. Asking them to do that is tantamount to asking them to deny who they are. And they’re OK with that because there’s nothing else they’d rather be doing.

Bringing It All Together

Now that you know what separates passionate people from everybody else, do you think you have enough passion in your life?

Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

The Most Successful People Meditate, Here’s How You Can Too

What program, habit or change do you think most people don’t do, (but can) that would have the greatest impact on their lives? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Tim Ferriss, author of three #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestsellers, his latest book Tools of Titans is available now, on Quora.

Short but regular morning meditation. I found that more than 80% of the world-class performers I interviewed for Tools of Titans have some form of daily meditation or mindfulness practice. Both can be thought of as “cultivating a present-state awareness that helps you to be nonreactive.”

This applies to everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Justin Boreta of The Glitch Mob, and from elite athletes like Amelia Boone to writers like Maria Popova. It’s the most consistent pattern of them all.

It is a “meta-skill” that improves everything else. You’re starting your day by practicing focus when it doesn’t matter (sitting on a couch for ten minutes) so that you can focus better later when it does matter (negotiation, conversation with a loved one, max deadlift, mind-melding with a Vulcan, etc.).

If you want better results with less stress, fewer “I should have said X” mental loops, etc., meditation acts as a warm bath for the mind. Perhaps you’re a world-conquering machine with elite focus, but you might need to CTFO (chill the fuck out) a few minutes a day before you BTFO (burn the fuck out).

Meditation allows me to step back and gain a “witness perspective” (as with psychedelics), so that I’m observing my thoughts instead of being tumbled by them. I can step out of the washing machine and calmly look inside it.

Most of our waking hours, we feel as though we’re in a trench on the front lines with bullets whizzing past our heads. Through twenty minutes of consistent meditation, I can become the commander, looking out at the battlefield from a hilltop. I’m able to look at a map of the territory and make high-level decisions. “These guys shouldn’t even be fighting over here. What the hell is Regiment B doing over there? Call them out. We need more troops around the ridge. For objectives, we should be going after A, B, and C in that order. Ignore all the other so-called emergencies until those are handled. Great. Now, deep breath, and . . . execute.”

A few options to get you started:

1. Use an app like Headspace or Calm. Headspace’s free “Take10” will guide you for ten minutes a day for ten days. A number of my guests also use Headspace to help them get to sleep.

2. Listen to a guided meditation from Sam Harris or Tara Brach. Maria Popova of Brain Pickings listens to the same recording every morning — Tara Brach’s Smile Guided Meditation recording from the summer of 2010.

3. Take a TM course (Learn about the Transcendental Meditation technique.). It will probably cost $ 1,000 or more, but this option offers a coach and accountability. For me, this is what kicked off more than 2 years of consistent meditation.

4. If you want to try mantra-based meditation without a course, you can sit and silently repeat one two-syllable word (I’ve used “na-ture” before) for 10 to 20 minutes first thing in the morning. TM purists would call this heresy, but you can still see results. Aim for physical comfort. No crossed legs or yoga-like contortion required. The default is sitting reasonably straight on a chair with your feet on the floor, hands on your thighs or in your lap, and back supported.

Alarming Numbers Of People Are Trying To Rip Apples Open With Their Bare Hands

Hey, it’s the weekend. Have you got absolutely nothing to do? Why not destroy an apple using only your brute strength? (Just make sure to eat it afterward — food waste is bad, people!)

We bring this up because the young and hip on Twitter are apparently all about the #SuperSageAppleChallenge. The “challenge” is whether or not you can use your bare hands to squeeze or twist an apple in two. Chances are, you can’t.

The task got its start — and its name — from Sage Northcutt, a UFC fighter whose muscled hands make apples quake. He tweeted a video of himself inflicting fruity carnage on Tuesday and encouraged his followers to do the same.

He also tweeted an apple-breaking clip at Chrissy Teigen for her birthday, which seemed to really impress her.

Here are some other people who may or may not also impress Teigen.

If you embark on this challenge and live to tell the tale, let us know. Just be careful.

8 Habits of Considerate People

2016-11-03-1478213220-62217-8HabitsofConsideratePeopleHP.jpg

Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer once said, “Politeness is to human nature what warmth is to wax.” It’s true. Being kind and considerate softens people and makes them malleable to your way of thinking.

But I see another meaning there, too. I think he’s also saying that being considerate of others is an integral part of what it means to be human. Charles Darwin would have agreed. He argued that our instinct to be considerate is even stronger than our instinct to be self-serving.

As obvious as that may seem, it’s only recently that neuroscience has been able to explain why. Research conducted by Dacher Keltner at Berkeley showed that our brains react exactly the same when we see other people in pain as when we experience pain ourselves. Watching someone else experience pain also activates the structure deep inside the brain that’s responsible for nurturing behavior, called the periaqueductal gray.

Being considerate of others is certainly a good career move, but it’s also good for your health. When you show consideration for others, the brain’s reward center is triggered, which elevates the feel-good chemicals dopamine, oxytocin, and endogenous opioids. This gives you a great feeling, which is similar to what’s known as “runner’s high,” and all that oxytocin is good for your heart.

“Being considerate of others will take you further in life than any college or professional degree.” – Marian Wright Edelman

That’s all well and good, but how practical is it? How do you become more considerate when you have so many other things competing for your finite mental energy? It’s not that hard–all you have to do is emulate the habits of highly considerate people.

1. Show up on time. Sure, sometimes things happen, but always showing up late sends a very clear message that you think your time is more important than everyone else’s, and that’s just rude. Even if you really do think that your time is more important, you don’t have to broadcast that belief to the world. Instead, be considerate and show up when you said you would.

2. Be deliberately empathic. It’s one thing to feel empathy for other people, but putting that feeling into action is another matter entirely. It’s great to be able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes–in fact, it’s essential–but that doesn’t necessarily translate into being considerate. To be deliberately empathic, you have to let your ability to walk in their shoes change what you do, whether that’s changing your behavior to accommodate their feelings or providing tangible help in a tough situation. This requires emotional intelligence.

3. Apologize when you need to (and don’t when you don’t).
We all know people who are so insecure or so afraid of offending someone that they practically apologize for breathing. In such situations, apologizing loses its meaning. But it’s a different matter entirely when a sincere apology is really necessary. When you’ve made a mistake, or even think you’ve made a mistake, apologizing is a crucial part of being considerate.

4. Smile a lot. Physically, it’s easier to frown than to smile–smiling involves 42 different muscles; however, it pays to make the extra effort, as smiling has a huge effect on other people. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. When you smile at people, they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good as a result.

5. Mind your manners. A lot of people have come to believe that not only are manners unnecessary, they’re undesirable because they’re fake. These people think that being polite means you’re acting in a way that doesn’t reflect how you actually feel, but they’ve got it backwards. “Minding your manners” is all about focusing on how the other person feels, not on how you feel. It’s consciously acting in a way that puts other people at ease and makes them feel comfortable.

6. Be emotionally intelligent. One of the huge fallacies our culture has embraced is that feeling something is the same as acting on that feeling, and that’s just wrong, because there’s this little thing called self-control. Whether it’s helping out a co-worker when you’re in a crunch to meet your own deadline or continuing to be pleasant with someone who is failing to return the favor, being considerate often means not acting on what you feel.

7. Try to find a way for everybody to win. Many people approach life as a zero-sum game. They think that somebody has to win and somebody else has to lose. Considerate people, on the other hand, try to find a way for everybody to win. That’s not always possible, but it’s their goal. If you want to be more considerate, stop thinking of every interaction with others as a win/lose scenario.

8. Act on your intuition when it comes to other people’s needs.
Sometimes you can just tell when someone is upset or having a bad day. In such cases, being considerate means checking in with them to see if your intuition is correct. If your intuition is telling you to reach out–do it; they’ll appreciate your concern.

Bringing It All Together

Being considerate is good for your mental and physical health, your career, and everyone around you. On top of that, it just feels good.

What are some other ways to show consideration for others? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.
