Maria Menounos Shares Breathtaking Photos of Her Big Greek Wedding: ‘Truly a Magical Fairytale’

Maria Menounos tied the knot in Kalamata, Greece on Saturday — and if the pictures are anything to go by, she had a celebration for the ages.

The TV personality, 40, is sharing all the glamorous behind-the-scenes moments from her festive second ceremony with Keven Undergaro, 50, whom she initially wed last year in a surprise wedding during Fox’s New Year’s Eve broadcast.

On Instagram, Menounos posted a picture of the happy couple cutting open a massive, berry-covered cake. “Truly a magical fairytale,” she wrote.

In other photos in her slideshow post, Menounos showed off her lemon-filled decor, complete with a scrumptious yellow cake with a multi-color top layer, cheerful lemon centerpieces, yellow plants, yellow-hued drinks and pastries.

“I literally did not expect what I just walked into,” she said on her Instagram Story. “I said I wanted some lemons on the tables. I didn’t mean put lemon trees everywhere. This is insane.”

In fact, the wedding — for which she used the hashtag #mariaandkevensbigfatgreekwedding — was decked out with 1,500 lemons!

Naming the people who made her special day possible, she added in a post, “Huge Thanks to @catering.dipnosofistirion @dimitrisskarmoutsos for the most amazing food and for making every dream come true. Everything I had hoped for you took to a level I couldn’t even imagine. Thank you to both Dimitris!”

On her Instagram Story, Menounos kept fans in the loop as she got ready for the big day. In her veil, she said, “My cousin Nikki let us use her apartment. Literally Nikki there were about 1,000 people in your house, I just want you to know. Literally 1,000 people. I love you. Thank you.”

In another video, her family sang as Menounos held her veil. “Very homey,” she said. “We’re very chill here.”

Menounos also provided a peek at her major entrance as she and Undergaro arrived at the church in a carriage surrounded by a swarm of people, and she later shared the joyful dancing at the ceremony.

Following the wedding, she reminisced on her Instagram Story with friends. “Literally the most delicious food I’ve ever eaten in my life,” she gushed. “Wasn’t the cheese pie the best?”

Before the wedding, she took a moment to reflect on Instagram.

“I’ve been planning this for maybe a month but really been planning this for a long time in my heart because I always wanted to return to Greece and do our wedding here,” she said. “Greece means so much to us and our village and our roots and I’m so beyond thankful to all of our friends who put this together.”

“Honestly I feel like the luckiest girl in the world,” she continued. “I have the best husband, I have the best family, nothing is without its problems and nothing’s perfect but I am so blessed and so so happy today that we get to do this amazing wedding in this beautiful village that I want to move to although I think Keven may divorce me and that would kind of suck.”

For Menounos’ first wedding, the bride wore a Pronovias strapless lace “Randala”-designed gown with a matching lace detachable coat, while Undergaro opted for a Ralph Lauren tux. The two exchanged their own vows with rings by Jean Doussett while their parents, including Menounos’ mom, Litsa, who is battling stage-4 brain cancer, watched nearby.

“I really truly believe that it’s taken us this long because of the pressures of putting a wedding together,” Menounos, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in summer 2017, told PEOPLE at the time. “I’ve always wanted it to be super intimate and even though this is the opposite, we can only invite our immediate family, so the pressure of who to invite is gone. This was just so perfect.”

Maria Menounos Marries Keven Undergaro (Again!) in Greece — See the Stunning Photos

Maria Menounos has tied the knot with Keven Undergaro again!

After saying “I do” in an impromptu New Year’s Eve ceremony last year, Menounos, 40, and Undergaro, 50, celebrated their love in another ceremony on Saturday, PEOPLE has confirmed.

For her second ceremony, the TV journalist swapped the couple’s first wedding‘s Times Square venue for her family’s homeland of Greece.

Leading up to the big day, Menounos told Us Weekly — which first reported the wedding news — that her father was planning the nuptials, jokingly calling him a “bridezilla.”

The happy bride has yet to share snaps from the ceremony, but her wedding dress designer on Saturday shared the first photo of the bride’s elegant gown.

“First fitting in LA for @mariamenounos,” designer Celia Kritharioti wrote alongside an image of Menounos wearing the lace-covered, off-the-shoulder dress.

Prince Louis Official Christening Portraits Are Here: See All 4 Stunning Photos!

Prince Louis’ official christening portraits dropped Sunday — and they are a royal dream.

The four stunning photos share a few fun similarities (and surprising differences!) with big brother Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s christenings photos.

Proud parents Prince William and Kate Middleton chose Matt Holyoak, one of the world’s leading portrait photographers, to take the photos, which were taken in the Morning Room at Clarence House (grandpa Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall‘s official London residence), following the little prince’s baptism in the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace.

The first photo features Will, Kate and their three children along with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Kate’s family, including Carole and Michael Middleton, James Middleton, Pippa Middleton and her husband, James Matthews.

The second photo includes just the royal family members, while the third photo showcases the new family of five. Kate and her baby boy, Louis, take center stage in the fourth photo.

The family is surrounded by history in Clarence House’s Morning Room. The sofa they are seated around is part of a suite of gilt-wood seat furniture by Thomas Chippendale, which dates from about 1773. It is thought to have been commissioned by George III’s brother, the Duke of Gloucester.

To the right is an oil on canvas portrait of Queen Elizabeth, by Michael Noakes, 1972-1973. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were unable to attend the christening due to the monarch’s busy schedule last week and the week prior.

“I was truly honored at being asked to take the official photographs at the christening of Prince Louis, and to witness at first hand such a happy event,” Holyoak said in a statement. “Everyone was so relaxed and in such good spirits, it was an absolute pleasure. I only hope I have captured some of that joy in my photographs.”

Holyoak has worked with the royal family before and was behind the gorgeous portraits taken of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to mark their 70th wedding anniversary last year.

George’s portraits were taken by celebrity photographer Jason Bell in the Morning Room at Clarence House as well, immediately following the ceremony at St. James’s Palace in 2013. One of the historic portraits features Queen Elizabeth sitting with her three heirs: Charles, William and George.

Charlotte’s 2015 christening portraits were taken by famed photographer Mario Testino, a favorite of William’s late mother, Princess Diana. Testino snapped the impeccably candid images during the family’s intimate post-christening gathering at Sandringham House, Queen Elizabeth’s Norfolk country home.

Royal family members, including the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla – along with Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and her siblings Pippa and James – assembled at Sandringham for afternoon tea following the church service.

Testino also snapped a portrait of Charlotte along with the four generations of British heirs – the Queen, Charles, William and George, who were first photographed together on George’s 2013 christening day – and the Middleton family joined in as well.

The royal family gathered together on Monday to celebrate Louis’ christening at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace in London.

Kensington Palace Releases Three Royal Wedding Photos, Shot at Windsor

ALL SMILES: Three royal wedding photos shot by Alexi Lubomirski have been released by Kensington Palace following Saturday’s nuptials at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor.
Two of the photos were taken in The Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle following the post-ceremony carriage procession around the town. A third photo, a black-and-white shot of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex alone, was taken on the East Terrace of Windsor Castle.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex would like to thank everyone who took part in the celebrations of their wedding on Saturday. They feel so lucky to have been able to share their day with all those gathered in Windsor and also with all those who watched the wedding on television across the U.K., Commonwealth and around the world,” the palace said.
Lubomirski said shooting the wedding and the engagement photos last year “has been a beautiful chapter in my career and life that I will happily never forget.” Lubomirski added that he was honored to document the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s “inspiring journey of love, hope and family.”
Two of the photos show the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex, their immediate family and members of the wedding party, including Princess Charlotte and

‘Growing Up Too Fast!’ Jessa Duggar Seewald Shares Photos of Baby Henry’s Progress

Jessa Duggar Seewald‘s son Henry is already 5-months-old. And the reality star can’t believe it!

On Saturday, Jessa — who gave birth to her son in February — shared a photo collage of how the tiny tot has grown, explaining her boy was “Growing up too fast!”

In the pics, the young boy is seen wearing a series of white onesies with colorful ties — each one showing his age by the numbers, from one month to five months.

She also linked out to a photo album of Henry on her family website, which showed plenty of sweet moments of the newest Seewald hanging with dad Ben Seewald and big brother Spurgeon Elliot, 1.

Since welcoming the newest addition to their family earlier this year, the Seewalds have been learning a thing or two about adjustment — as they showed on the July 3 episode of their reality show, Counting On

“Things have been a little more busy in the Seewald house,” Ben explained in the episode. “One adjustment going from one child to two is there are so many diapers and they pile up so fast. We gotta take the trash out a lot more often.”

RELATED VIDEO: Emily Maynard Johnson Admits She Was Ashamed to Stop Breastfeeding Her Third Son Early

Ben and Jessa aren’t the only ones who have had to adjust to a new pattern — big brother Spurgeon has as well.

“Spurgeon’s always been a cuddly little boy, but now he has to share mommy’s lap with another baby,” Jessa revealed of her oldest child — who is learning about sharing.

“We’re learning to take turns. You know, when baby has to eat, mommy’s going to hold Henry, but you can sit beside me. So maybe that’s been an adjustment for him,” she said, adding, “But I think he’s doing pretty well.”

Counting On airs Mondays (9 p.m. ET) on TLC.

Adorable New Photos Of Will And Kate Will Give You Royal Wedding Déjà Vu

We’d all love to repeatedly relive the magic that was Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding. And it looks like they’ve done just that.

Will and the former Kate Middleton attended the Royal Ascot in Ascot, England on Tuesday in looks that were only slightly less fancy than what they wore to their nuptials in 2011.

Kate even stuck to wearing Alexander McQueen, the fashion house that designed her iconic wedding gown, for the occasion. She looked lovely in a white lace dress and matching fascinator. Will looked like a groom handsome in a suit and large top hat.

When Will and Kate weren’t busy looking painfully adorable, Kate was engaging in one of her other strong suits, managing to kiss people hello while also wearing an elaborate headpiece.

Can you say “vow renewals?”

Mom Encourages Parents To Be In More Photos In Heartfelt Post

After seeing how few photos she had that included her and her kids, a mom has shared her plea for parents to capture more memories with their families.

Blogger Cyndy Gatewood, a mom of three who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, shared a post on Facebook on June 5 encouraging dads to take more photos of their wives with their kids.

“When she’s in the kitchen talking to your son about his day, take the picture,” she wrote in her post. “If she’s rolling around on the floor with the kids or helping one with their homework, take the picture. Time goes by so fast and every day these sweet babies are getting older and older. Before we know it, they’ll be packing up their cars and moving off to college.”

Gatewood told HuffPost she felt motivated to write the post after realizing she only had a few photos of her and her kids, and they were selfies and only showed her from the neck up. The post was also inspired by her love for looking at photos of her mom, who died from breast cancer when Gatewood was 20 years old.

“I have a box of pictures of her that I look at often and compare. I look closely at those pictures and think, ‘Do I have her hands? Does my daughter have her eyes?’” she said. “Not once have I ever looked at a picture of her and thought, ‘Gosh, she was a mess that day.’ Or ‘Wow, she wasn’t wearing any makeup!’ All I ever see when I look at those pictures is love and memories. I cherish them.”

Gatewood’s post, which has been shared more than 269,000 times as of Tuesday, echoes many other moms’ messages about capturing memories with their families. In 2012, HuffPost contributor Allison Tate wrote a viral essay, “The Mom Stays In The Picture,” in which she stressed why she wants her kids to have photos both of her and with her.

“Someday I won’t be here ― and I don’t know if that someday is tomorrow or thirty or forty or fifty years from now ― but I want them to have pictures of me,” she wrote. “I want them to see the way I looked at them, see how much I loved them. I am not perfect to look at and I am not perfect to love, but I am perfectly their mother.”

Gatewood told HuffPost that since she shared her post, she has already begun taking her own advice.

“I had a friend snap some pictures of me with my kids at the pool yesterday. As someone who never wants to be reminded what I now look like in a bathing suit after having three kids, it was so empowering!” she said. “I stopped worrying about what I looked like and instead knew this was something my kids will have to look back on. My husband also recently took some of me cooking with my daughter in the kitchen and catching him doing that made me smile.”

It Doesn’t Get Much Cuter Than This Baby’s Donut Smash Photos

We all know parents love a good baby cake smash, but the donut smash might be even cuter.

In honor of National Donut Day, photographer Sarah Gibson of Indigo Bird Photography took pictures of an adorable baby named Atlas smashing a donut dessert spread. And clearly, he loved it.

Atlas’ mom reached out to Gibson about doing a themed photo shoot for his first birthday, the photographer suggested a donut smash, and the rest was history.

The photographer said the baby was “intrigued” when he saw the dozen colorful donuts and “just went to town once he tasted the icing!”

“He liked the chocolate frosting the best! He tried all of the flavors, but kept going back to the chocolate one. That’s a baby after my own heart!” she added.

Atlas’ big brother, Malachi, helped out by singing and dancing to get his baby to look at the camera instead of the donuts the whole time.

Though this was Gibson’s first donut shoot, she said it definitely won’t be her last. “I love the added element of humor the donuts bring to the session. I mean, who doesn’t love donuts? And Atlas started throwing the donuts once he was full of sugar, which is something that hasn’t happened at a regular cake smash.”

Added the photographer, “Now I’m looking for a baby who wants to do a taco smash!”

Here Are 25 Incredible Photos Of Celebrities Partying at Studio 54

Getting into Studio 54 in the 1970s was a nearly impossible endeavor. Marc Benecke, doorman for the disco club, would stand on a stepping stool and select club candidates from the crowd. He compared this process to “mixing a salad.” Nevertheless, “54” lured celebrities, socialites, athletes, and artists from around the globe. Andy Warhol once said, “The key of the success of Studio 54 is that it’s a dictatorship at the door and a democracy on the dance floor.” For the 40th anniversary of the club’s opening, we’re giving you a peek at the lucky few (celebrities, of course) who actually made it inside.

Woman Takes Engagement Photos With Her One True Love: Popeyes Chicken

When it comes to being engaged, Elyse Chelsea Clark is throwing caution to the wind, er, wing.

The New Orleans bartender is such a fan of Popeyes Chicken that she decided to do a series of engagement photos with her favorite fast food.

Then she posted the poultry-centered pics on Facebook with this note: “I’m finally engaged!”

The Popeyes engagement pics taken by photographer Whitney Tucker show Clark looking romantically at chicken boxes…

Strolling through the park with the object of her affection …

And smooching that box with the same passion that is typically reserved for love’s kiss.

Oh, and she likes the biscuits too.

The photos might be funny, but Clark’s passion for Popeyes is real and true.

“I have a really big love for Popeyes,” she told the New Orleans Times-Picayne. “I eat it all the time.”

The chain responded to Clark’s engagement spread with this tweet.

Everyone Missed Something In Those New ‘Game Of Thrones’ Photos

Few things are as great as knowing something before you’re supposed to. It’s the same feeling you get from yelling at Steve on “Blue’s Clues” about what the clues actually mean. He’s giving you that blank stare, not because he’s actually staring into a camera lens and can’t hear you, but because you’re a total boss.

Jon Snow will never have that feeling. Jon Snow knows nothing. However, we might know something new about him and where “Game of Thrones” is going. It’s all because of this photo:

After HBO released Season 7 photos, including this one of Sam and Gilly, fans have been frantically trying to decode what Gilly is reading.

Now, apparently, they have.

As reported by “Game of Thrones” fan site Winter is Coming, Redditor itsjayrr pointed out that the page seems to be out of George R.R. Martin’s book The World of Ice & Fire, which tells the history of Westeros. The passage talks about Azor Ahai, the person who’s supposed to save everyone.

See it here:

Upon our own inspection, it does seem like key words in the image do match up with the text from the book.

On the page from The World of Ice & Fire, we hear about “The Long Night,” a time when winter supposedly lasted for a generation. Then, a hero known as Azor Ahai came along to help rid the land of the White Walkers. A prophecy tells of the return of Azor Ahai, sometimes used interchangeably with the term The Prince That Was Promised. Either way, this legendary character is seen as the person who will ultimately save Westeros.

The paragraph further emphasizes the importance of the prophecy within the “Game of Thrones” universe and makes us wonder: who will be Azor Ahai?

Is it Dany? Is it Jon Snow? Someone else? The debate can go on and on.

Kit Harington told HuffPost that he didn’t care if his character, Jon Snow, is the Prince or not, which is probably for the best. If the page Gilly’s perusing is from The World of Ice & Fire, Snow has bigger problems.

Something is coming to “Game of Thrones,” and it ain’t winter …

It’s Ice Spiders.

Oh what a tangled ice web we weave …

Following the revelation about the book, we checked out our own copy of The World of Ice & Fire.

When you look at the specific section of text, it’s easy to notice that the rest of the page has a reference to the White Walkers using giant ice spiders. There’s even a picture of White Walkers with the spiders. If the book Gilly is using is some version of The World of Ice & Fire, continued reading will reveal the same.

Giant ice spiders have already been mentioned on the show. Old Nan told Bran about them back in Season 1, saying the White Walkers’ spiders were as big as hounds.

Are the spiders coming? Time will tell.

But, yeah, duh, why not?

If this book on the show is being looked to as fact, Sam and Gilly better hope they have Hagrid from “Harry Potter” coming to help. That dude loves spiders. Ron will probably want to stay home.

Ice spiders are coming.

“Game of Thrones” Season 7 premieres July 16.

Photographer Incorporates Deployed Dad Into Wife’s Maternity Photos

A Texas photographer found a beautiful way to make sure a deployed soldier was part of his wife’s maternity photos.

Nicole Bedwell was expecting her first child with her husband Wesley when she hired Traci Fugitt of Traci Lynn Photography to do a maternity shoot. Wesley was stationed 7,000 miles away in Japan and couldn’t be present for the shoot, so the two women decided to find another way to make him part of the photos.

“We planned to bring props to give a nod to him being away,” Fugitt told The Huffington Post in an email.

Though Nicole posed with a photo of Wesley and other props to pay tribute to her husband, she and Fugitt also came up with another idea. The mom-to-be asked her husband to pose with his hand outstretched outside in Japan and send the photo to Fugitt.

“I put them side by side to show the difference between the locations in different countries,” said the photographer, adding that she believes the final image shows a couple waiting together, despite their separation.

Fugitt said Nicole and Wesley loved the photos, which moved many of their family members to tears.

Though Nicole’s due date was April 22, she delivered on April 13 after doctors decide to induce labor due to her hypertension. “Wesley was still deployed, and they had already bought a ticket for the first date,” Fugitt told HuffPost. “But Nicole worked for an entire day on the phone getting a new ticket to get him home.”

He made it home a day before she was induced.

Nicole and Wesley welcomed a baby girl, whom they named Pyper. Though the baby has to spend some time in the NICU due to breathing issues, the family is hoping she will stabilize and go home wit her parents before Wesley has to deploy again.

Fugitt said they’re hoping to take newborn photos with Wesley before he leaves as well.

But for now, the side-by-side maternity image is a fitting tribute to their family.

Said the photographer, “Even 7,000 miles away, Wesley’s love for his wife and newborn daughter is amazing.”

Hilarious Mom Pokes Fun At Celebrity Parents By Recreating Their Photos

A California mom is making fun of celebrity parents’ photos by starring in hilarious recreations.

Kate Casey of Newport Beach is a comedian, author and podcast host. She also has four kids under the age of 7 and a wicked sense of humor about the trials of parenting.

Casey started parodying celebrities’ glamorous photo shoots and paparazzi photos several years ago. “I kept looking at pictures of celebrities in magazines and thinking how funny it would be to compare a normal mom versus a celebrity mom or a mother featured in a magazine,” she told The Huffington Post.

“For example, after Jennifer Lopez had her twins, she was featured in an InStyle Magazine photo spread wearing a ball gown holding her newborns,” she added. “After I had my newborn, I was wearing mesh underwear and lounge pants. Nicole Richie was photographed with her new son in an Oscar dress pushing an antique style stroller. Normal moms wear yoga pants and push a Snap-N-Go. New moms forget to brush their hair, let alone get spray tanned and have fake eyelashes.”

Casey posts her side-by-side photos on Instagram, where she has attracted over 10,000 followers. In her hilarious captions, she often ends with “same, right,” which has evolved into the hashtag #sameright.

The mom said she’s started getting requests from friends and fans when they come across a particularly wacky photo. She also credits her friends for helping her bring the parodies to life by lending clothes, snapping the photos, and even placing her in difficult positions.

Casey’s series is reminiscent of Australian mom and comedian Celeste Barber’s celebrity photo recreations. Though Casey says she’d been posting her photos for awhile before she saw Barber’s, she thinks the Aussie mom’s work is great. “Who doesn’t enjoy a fun photo parody?” she added.

Ultimately, Casey’s goal is to make fellow parents laugh amid of the chaos and stress of their lives.

“It’s easy to compare yourself to a glamorous celebrity,” she said. “What’s happened to my face? These kids have destroyed my once bikini ready body. I can sort of remember what it was like to have thick and glossy hair. These pictures just highlight that it’s okay to laugh at yourself and the absurdity of airbrushed and staged photos.”

Haunting Photos Show Polar Bears In Captivity Around The World

A compelling photo series is challenging the way that humans look at and understand wild animals kept in captivity.

Photographer Sheng Wen Lo, who is from Taiwan but based in the Netherlands, began taking pictures of polar bears in zoos in 2014. The resulting photo series, titled “White Bear,” depicts bears in 26 different zoos throughout Europe and China.

“The series is not about polar bears, but about captive wild animals on display, the dilemma between its intension and cost,” he said in a statement sent to The Huffington Post. “It is not about whether animals are suitable for captive programs, but rather about whether some animals are not the ideal species to be kept in captivity.”

Lo pairs his photos with a video project, “The March of the Great White Bear,” that highlights pacing behavior — typically seen as a sign of stress — in polar bears in several zoos.

His photos also explore the strangeness of habitat modifications that appear to be designed with human spectators in mind — like painting rocks white to mimic ice and snow, for instance.

“I found that the combinations of polar bears in man-made habitats look strange in almost every case on Earth,” he said. “I understand it is difficult to use a real iceberg but what is the point of just painting one instead?”

Lo said he got the idea after two experiences of seeing polar bears “eating grass” at a zoo in San Francisco and at the Bronx Zoo in New York City. While he did photograph the Bronx Zoo, the image didn’t make it into the final series.

Lo made an effort not to seek out stereotypically “sad-looking” shots, he said. And he noted that he’s not against zoos as institutions.

“I do think that zoos and aquariums have positive potentials and modes, especially when they function as an educative shelter that take care of local, injured animals or those rejected by their mother or group,” he said.

“White Bear” will be on display at FORMAT Photo Festival in Derby, UK from March to April, Fotofestival Naarden from May 20 in the Dutch city of Naarden, and during the September OrganVida Photo Festival in Croatia.

On Tuesday night, as President Trump made his first address to a joint session of Congress, the cameras were ready once again. These photos are really all you need to know about this night.

Stunning Photos Follow Cuba’s Drag And Trans Stars From Day To Night

When photographer David Tesinsky first heard about Malu, a transgender woman who has achieved somewhat of a celebrity status in her native Cuba, he instantly wanted to meet her.

Tesinsky, who hails from the Czech Republic, has always highlighted what he describes as “subcultural” groups in his work; he has previously documented homeless Parisians, youth activists in Iran and queer rights advocates in Belarus. He told The Huffington Post that when he finally made it to Cuba in January, he was immediately struck by Malu’s determination to live authentically, in spite of the political and social challenges the Cuban LGBTQ community continues to face.

A performer at a local theater, Malu is one of three subjects that Tesinsky captured for his “Before Night Falls” series. The others, Natasha and Alina, identify as gay men. Still, both challenge gender stereotypes in their own right, making a second living as drag performers in Havana nightclubs.

“I’m inspired by contrast,” Tesinsky told The Huffington Post. “That somebody could just be selling fruits and vegetables during the day for a living, and then can turn into a queen of the evening on stage at night,” he said. He was struck by what he describes as a lack of a distinctive “community” in the traditional sense as far as queer Cubans are concerned. “They keep it very low profile,” he said.

Tesinsky, who plans to visit Israel and Mongolia next, hopes his Cuba photographs will shed some light on how LGBTQ people are exploring gender and identity on the stage “in a country where these things haven’t been tolerated” at all until recently.

The Must-See Photos From Anwar Hadid’s Major New Fashion Campaign

While most of us have been busy eyeing Gigi Hadid’s newest collection with Tommy Hilfiger and gawking at Bella Hadid’s latest sheer outfit, the models’ little brother landed the biggest campaign of his career.

17-year-old Anwar Hadid just landed Hugo Boss’ Spring/Summer 2017 Digital Oasis campaign, shot by photographer Harley Weir.

According to a press release, the campaign also includes actress Devon Aoki, French musician Soko, twin brothers Wyatt and Fletcher Shears of band The Garden, as well as various other artists and models.

Last year, Anwar told Teen Vogue about what it was like growing up with three other models in the family (Gigi, Bella and of course, matriarch Yolanda Hadid) and what his plans for a future in fashion entail.

“I feel very lucky for all they have taught me,” he told the magazine. “They tell me to be myself, have fun, and focus on eye expressions.”

Anwar added, “I hope to collaborate with the brands and publications that inspire me.”

39 Photos Of Pets Supporting Their Humans Through Childbirth

For over four years, the Birth Photography Facebook group has been producing slideshows of gorgeous labor, delivery and postpartum images and sharing them on its public page. After compiling photos featuring midwives, doulas, dads and siblings, the group decided to focus its latest project on another special subset of birth team members: pets!

“Dogs and other pets seem to instinctively know that something is up during a pregnancy,” the Birth Photography group’s founder Laura Eckert told The Huffington Post. “They can become more protective of the mother-to-be, as though they sense that something is about to happen.”

Eckert shared photos from “Loyal Birth Companions: Pets at Births” with HuffPost. “As these images show, pets are often very curious and maybe even concerned about what is going on during a home birth, and they often offer a sense of calm for the laboring mother,” she said. “To some moms it’s like having an extra support person right there beside them throughout their labor.”

This Husband And Wife Recreated Their Wedding Photos After 42 Years

Conrad and Louise Gonzales were married in 1974. Forty-two years later, the couple recreated their wedding photos ― and they look even more in love now than they did back then.

In a BuzzFeed video posted Monday, Conrad and Louise recount their decades-long love story, from when they first met in a high school accounting class, to their first date touring a college in Pasadena, California, to their July 6, 1974 wedding day and some of the relationship hurdles they hit later on.

While prepping for the anniversary photo shoot, the couple leafed through their wedding album, reminiscing about the big day all those years ago

“It also reminds me how blessed I am that after 42 years I’m still with my wife,” Conrad said after seeing the photos side-by-side. “I thank God that he allowed me to find this woman and enjoy a lifetime together.”

Dorothea Lange’s Photos Of Imprisoned Japanese-Americans Need To Be Seen

Photographer Dorothea Lange, well-known as a documenter of the Great Depression for the Farm Security Administration, captured the plight of poverty-stricken Americans with empathy, respect, and unflinching honesty. Her most famous work, “Migrant Mother,” reflecting the desperation and resilience of a mother working as a pea-picker, has become the defining image of that grim era in U.S. history.

She is lesser recognized, however, for her work chronicling the prison camps in California, as well as Washington, Oregon, and Arizona, where people of Japanese ancestry were incarcerated between 1942 and 1946 ― reportedly because the works were quietly censored by military commanders who reviewed and disapproved of the work.

Directly following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, American military police began the systematic imprisonment of Japanese-Americans. A chilling FBI report from the time reads: “It is said, and no doubt with considerable truth, that every Japanese in the United States who can read and write is a member of the Japanese intelligence system.”

In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, which, according to PBS, “permitted the military to circumvent the constitutional safeguards of American citizens in the name of national defense,” calling for the evacuation and imprisonment of Japanese-Americans.

Over 120,000 persons of Japanese descent, many of them children, were required by the military to evacuate their homes and businesses and relocate to prison camps, where they lived surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards for up to four years. Some, however, died in the camps due to lack of medical care, emotional stress, or were killed by military guards. Over two-thirds of those incarcerated were American citizens.

Lange, renowned for her work for the FSA, was recruited to create a photographic record of the “evacuation and relocation” processes by The War Relocation Authority. Despite, or perhaps because of, Lange’s moral objection to the prison camps, she obliged. Lange visited cities around California, photographing Japanese-Americans packing up their belongings, being packed onto buses, and shuttling to ramshackle temporary housing facilities.

She made a visit to one of the nation’s largest camps, Manzanar, in the Southern California desert, where she documented without reservation the conditions under which people were forced to live. By the time the camps were decommissioned, Lange had taken over 800 photographs, images that objectively captured the humanity of their subjects and the brutality of their circumstances.

Some prisoners were supplied insufficient food and medical treatment, as well as substandard housing. Some, accused of resisting orders, were subjected to violence. Lange caught it all on camera.

When the War Relocation Authority surveyed the photos, Lange’s political perspective was obvious. They promptly seized the images and, for decades, kept them from widespread public viewing.

In 1946 the prison camps were decommissioned and detainees ― many of whom were impoverished, mentally ill, and elderly ― were released. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a Civil Liberties Act declaring that the decision to incarcerate Japanese-Americans was spurred by “racial prejudice, wartime hysteria and a lack of political leadership,” formally apologizing to all living survivors.

Lange’s photographs, both powerful works of documentary photography and searing reminders of our nation’s grave historical abuses, have been making the rounds online recently. The photographs have become disturbingly foreboding in the wake of retired Navy SEAL Carl Higbie’s comments citing the wartime incarceration of Japanese-Americans as “precedent” for creating a federal registry for immigrants from Muslim countries.

Furthermore, President-elect Donald Trump himself has stated that, had he been alive during World War II, he might have supported the imprisonment of Japanese-Americans. “I would have had to be there at the time to tell you, to give you a proper answer,” he said.

As the country fearfully awaits what will become of the nation under a Trump presidency, Lange’s photos serve as a crucial reminder of what is possible when fear clouds judgment and hate obstructs human empathy. In the words of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: “Now is not the time to tiptoe around historical references … It is the astute response of those who know that history gives both context and warning.”

We’ve compiled some of Lange’s searing photos, drawn from the archives of the Library of Congress, here. Historical blogger Tim Chambers, who shared Lange’s work on his blog Anchor Editions, is currently selling Lange’s prints for $ 50, with half of all proceeds benefitting the ACLU, an organization that fought relentlessly against the unjust incarcerations and remains just as important today.

These Are The Year’s Funniest Animal Photos

The animal kingdom can be a pretty hilarious place if you know where to look.

That’s the point of the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, which honor the best shots of animals doing some seriously funny things.

The award, which is now in its second year, shows that humor isn’t just limited to humans, said Tanzania-based photographer and contest creator Tom Sullam.

“The contest celebrates great photography of wildlife, but with the humorous element thrown in,” he told PBS.org. “We wanted to have a photo competition that was positive and upbeat but with a serious message about wildlife conservation attached to it.”

Judges picked 40 finalists after burrowing their way through more than 2,000 animal images from 75 different countries.

Angela Bohlke took the winning shot, which features a fox falling face first into the snow at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

“The picture shows a red fox hunting for his morning breakfast, a small rodent, known as a vole,” she told the Sun. “This photograph is from one of the times he unfortunately, however, hilariously missed. On the third try, he finally succeeded.”

For her efforts, Bohlke wins a one-week photography safari in Kenya.

Rumer Willis Slams Photographers For Allegedly Retouching Her Jawline In Vanity Fair Photos

Rumer Willis loves her jawline just the way it is.

After an outtake from a Vanity Fair photo shoot appeared online, Willis took to Instagram to express her disappointment over what she seems to think was a Photoshopping job gone wrong.

The 27-year-old actress wrote that the size of her jawline was reduced in the high-fashion spread, but photographers Mark Williams and Sara Hirakawa quickly responded to Willis’ claim, explaining that the photo was not retouched “to alter or modify anyone’s face.”

“The photographer Photoshopped my face to make my jaw smaller and I find it really offensive for anyone to try and change the way you look so drastically,” Willis captioned the photo on Instagram.

“I love the way I look and I won’t support anyone who would feel a need to change the way I look to make me beautiful. Whether or not they realize it, it is a form of bullying, which I won’t stand for,” she continued.

After Willis posted the image, the photographers issued a statement to The Cut to explain their editing choices, claiming that “there was never any intention … to alter her appearance.”

Read their response below:

The retouching that was done to the photograph was only done to resolve some distortion with using a wide angle lens for a group shot, and not to alter or modify anyone’s face. We used a wide angle lens, and it might’ve made Rumer’s chin look smaller from the higher angle that we shot the image. We did correct for the optics of the lens slightly as people’s heads get distorted through the wide angle lens. We certainly did not intend to change the way she naturally looks. Our intention was to capture the special bond between Rumer and her sisters.

It saddens us that Rumer feels the way she does about the image and hope she understands that there was never any intention with it to alter her appearance.

We should make clear that this image was an outtake and was not published in Vanity Fair or vf.com nor did they ever see it.

Regardless of the motivation behind the retouching, Willis, the eldest daughter of superstars Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, has been routinely criticized for her appearance from a young age. She’s been vocal about her battle with insecurity and the pressures of fame in the past, penning a powerful essay in Glamour after taking home the Mirror Ball trophy on “Dancing with the Stars” last year.

“When you grow up in the public eye the way that I did, everyone’s looking at you and waiting for you to do something crazy or say something wrong or have a meltdown,” she wrote. “I was constantly bullied because of my looks, so I struggled a lot with my body image.”

“After I finished [the show] I felt more beautiful than I had in my entire life … because of what I’d accomplished and worked so hard for,” she continued. “What it comes down to is this: We all need to stop bullying ourselves and being cruel to other women.”

The Photos From Chanel’s Show In Cuba Are Absolutely Dreamy

Chanel continuously pushes the boundaries when it comes to its runway shows. But now, its all-mighty leader Karl Lagerfeld has literally crossed a boundary few of us in the United States can say we’ve crossed: He debuted Chanel’s 2017 Cruise Collection in Havana, Cuba.

With the imminent change in rules and regulations over travel to Cuba from the U.S., it was only a matter of time before someone Lagerfeld pulled a move like this. While traveling there is still out of the realm of possibility for many, some, like beloved fashion site The Coveteur, got to experience it first hand.

The website’s co-founders Jake Rosenberg and Stephanie Mark were on-site for the exclusive, dreamy event, capturing scenes from Havana’s beautiful surroundings and the show itself, which they explained had “essentially taken over an entire city plaza.”

There were colorful cars! Mojitos and lemonade! Tilda Swinton! And arguably most shocking of all: Lagerfeld in an uncharacteristically colorful outfit.

Check out all the dreaminess below, and to see more head to The Coveteur

Let These Photos Of Women’s Afros Turned Into Nature Take Your Breath Away

Pierre Jean-Louis says he sees Mother Nature in black women.

He translates this by turning black women’s natural hair into breathtaking natural and celestial scenes in his series “Black Girl Magic.”

The New York/New Jersey/Philadelphia-based artist started creating these photos using an app called Enlight to show off the beauty in these women.

“I started creating these beautiful pictures last year around September when I started following some amazing accounts on Instagram [which have] nothing but beautiful black queens rocking their natural hair,” Jean-Louis told The Huffington Post via email. “I was amazed to see how so many black women are finally letting go of their insecurities and accept themselves for who they are. #Goddess.”

Jean-Louis usually takes portraits from different women’s Instagram pages that inspire him for his work. He calls his muses “beautiful queens” and praises them for rocking their natural curls and coils.

He told HuffPost that he edits the photos strictly for fun but hopes that his work conveys the message to black women that they should embrace their African heritage.

“I want the whole world to know that Mother Nature is actually black and we wouldn’t be here without her. I want every young black queen to remember that.”

Marvel over more of Jean-Louis’ work below and on his Instagram page.

Coachella opened once again with a new lineup of art sculptures and continues to play a major role in the transformative landscape which separates itself from other music festivals. Throughout the polo grounds, one sees large-scale site specific works that compels the patrons what the commissioned artist and organizers ultimately want…to social media the experience. The magical quality of Coachella Music Festival is the desert itself. It comes at a time of year when the weather produces just amount of heat during the day, and coolness at night to provide the high-priced ticket buyer a dual experience. The dual experience comes in many forms. It’s the warm balmy weather during the day that is therapeutic and invigorating. At night it is breezy and cool. The fact that the music festival is held at this time of year and at this location is part of the financial success and why its only getting bigger. I like to compare Coachella…the Disney of music festivals.

One of the major reasons why Disney has been so successful is its location. Second, is its magical qualities. Its magical qualities mostly come from the visceral experience one undergoes at a weekend at Coachella or a full day at Disney. There is so much to see and hear that our senses undergo an intoxication of stimuli that puts you in a hallucinatory state only wanting more. It is definitely a fix. If you have a good experience at Coachella, with the right mind and the right stamina, your Coachella experience will live with you for a while. The dream landscape of the Coachella desert begs your senses to come back. One of the reasons why Coachella can charge such high prices is because they can. These high ticket prices make Coachella more elite and elusive. There are no discounts on tickets because the festival is held during prime time weather for two weekends a year. They don’t have the luxury that Disney has of being open year round; offering opportunities for every economic class to attend.

So, every year in April, people with money make their annual pilgrimage to the desert to feel closer to their God. Coachella is a shamanistic baptism for the privileged that many back home who couldn’t attend (throughout Southern California) can only stay home and scoff or make fun of. It kind of feels like not having tickets to the prom. There’s a big party in the desert and I’m not invited. It’s all about being there. When people push send on their smart phones their advertising the experience of Coachella. This at a time when sophisticated music lovers from the 1900s get older and Coachella gets more innovated. They made it into the club and you didn’t.

What Coachella has done is brought in international art talent to create large scale artworks worthy of any international biennial. They are attempting to paint their skylines with beautiful lights that adds to the magical experience. I’m not even talking about the music and the stage lighting. I’m talking about the concert experience, and the climate, and the immersive art. Every single person who enters the gates of Coachella, navigating security worthy of the TSA, is immediately compelled to social media the sublime experience of being there…the lights…the sculptures…the sunsets…the beautiful people. One wonders if their pursuit of curating a great art experience has inspired the 2017 Desert X biennial. Of course it did! Trust me, if you’re stuck at home and and you see the heavens throwing a party, you really begin to despise Coachella. Not everyone goes to Coachella. Everyone goes to Disney. Big difference, but no difference in magic.

This article is part of an ongoing photojournalism survey of art exhibition openings titled EMS N(art)rative. Through my lens I document a photographic essay or visual “N(art)rative” that captures the happenings, personalities, collectors, gallerists, artists and the art itself; all elements that form the richly varied and textured fabric of the SoCal art world. This reconnaissance offers a unique view for serious art world players to obtain news and information on the current pulse of what’s in the now, yet capturing timeless indelible images for posterity and legacy. 22 Heartwarming Photos Of Kids Adopted From Foster Care

A series of heartwarming photos is shining a light on foster care adoption.

For over two years, the nonprofit Together We Rise has been sharing sweet photos of foster kids on the day they were adopted into their “forever families.” Posted on the organization’s Instagram and Facebook page, the photos show the kids next to signs that reveal how much time they spent in foster care before their adoptions.

Together We Rise aims to improve the lives of children in the U.S. foster care system by offering resources like school supplies, bicycles, educational programs and even college scholarships. The nonprofit also educates volunteers about the issues surrounding the foster care system and provides information to foster parents about the adoption process. Sharing foster care adoption photos on social media is just one of its many initiatives.

“With so much negative news surrounding foster care we just want highlight the positive with amazing adoptions that are happening every day,” TWR Executive Director, Gianna Dahlia, told The Huffington Post.

“There are many negative stereotypes surrounding kids in foster care but they are just children who want loving families and there are families out there fighting for them,” she added. “We just want to inspire those families either going the process or considering the adoption process that it can be done and it is worth it.”

Ryan Reynolds’ Friend Tried To Sell Photos Of Baby James, And It Was Crushing

Ryan Reynolds experienced a betrayal of a particularly hurtful kind after the birth of his daughter, James.

“A guy that I’d known for my whole life, one of my closest friends growing up, he had been shopping pictures of my baby around,” Reynolds told GQ for the magazine’s latest issue. “I kind of got in front of it, which is good. But it was a slightly dark period. A bad couple of weeks.”

The “guy” was a close friend of Reynolds who he has known for 25 years.

“It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out,” he said, adding that the person did it for the money and didn’t think he’d get caught. “It was, like, so kind of shocking. There isn’t really a conversation to have. It’s just, ‘Oh, well, now I’m never going to see you or talk to you again, unfortunately.’ That’s kind of how it worked out.”

Fatherhood has been a life-changer for the “Deadpool” star, who welcomed James with wife Blake Lively last December.

“I’ve learned that an inordinate amount of clichés are completely true,” he added. “Like, there is this kid here that I would walk through fire for. Or, maybe not fire. Like, a very hot pavement, I’d walk through. A shag rug.”

Trillions of Digital Photos Stored in “Clouds” But “Inkdot” Brings Them Back to Stunning Life on New Mediums

2015-09-04-1441382138-6662919-8.jpeg

Photos, photos everywhere…and, not one to hold. Inkdot’s changing that!

With the NFL season kicking off this week (September 10), it means summer is evolving into colorful Autumn, and people will be snapping photos of sports events, favorite concerts, fall weddings, first day of school for the kiddos, cute pets and breathtaking travel scenes, while taking the ubiquitous selfie. We just can’t seem to get enough of taking photos. Yet, the oldest known photograph with a person was only taken in 1838, depicting a man in Paris getting his shoes shined.

2015-09-04-1441383063-6230220-Boulevard_du_Temple_by_Daguerre.jpg

Boulevard du Temple – by Louis Daguerre in Paris 1838

Now it’s estimated there’ll be one trillion photos taken this year, and the total number of photos stored may reach 4.9 trillion in 2017. Hello, that’s a lot of terabytes! Indeed, the recent World Photo Day (August 19) underscored our growing fascination with snapping everything and everybody.

And although eccentric British photographer David Bailey once suggested that it “takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer,” quality photography has indeed come to us masses.

John & Nate Larkin bring memorable digital images to life in dramatic mediums

Chicago-based John Larkin, co-founder with his brother Nate of cutting edge and specialized online print company “Inkdot,” says that the invention of camera phones, especially the iPhone, has changed the whole game.

Every day there’s an incredible photo that comes through that was taken on an iPhone. Now everyone is able to capture quality shots, with a professional look about them. They don’t have to carry around a big camera, so it’s super convenient, they’re grabbing these spontaneous, quality moments and the images deserve to come to life again, in a tactile, creative and fun way — instead of only being shared on Facebook or Instagram.

2015-09-04-1441385735-9241578-14.jpeg

Sunrise captured on 24×36 Wood Print

The Larkin brothers were introduced to me by an associate of mine and a marketing expert Jonathan Stuart, whom I’ve worked with on several high profile athlete blogs for international platforms. Jonathan, whose Greay Area consultancy service helps clients cut through the noise, says the key to Inkdot’s success is its focus on creating distinctive and premium products, as opposed to churning out sub-par prints like many online photo-printing-sites.

So I checked out some of Inkdot’s unique products and discovered that by uploading one of your cool digital images from Instagram, Facebook or your computer to their website, you can pick hip “material” options for sporting your great image, including: immortalize your favorite event (like a sports score celebration or outstanding concert) by getting the shot printed on cool coasters or on a square print; create a memorable piece of art out of your stored wedding pix or recent vacation photos printed directly into natural wood; you can embed your back-to-school kids’ images off your phone into aluminum, giving it a long-lasting vibrancy; better still, do yourself a solid, grab a cute pet photo, and impress your lady by splashing her pooch’s mug on a throw pillow or tote bag; or to really rock out, use Stiick, a special magnetic frame to show off your special photos.

Holding a vacation memory on a Square Paper Print

Nate Larkin offers:

People take photos and the only feedback is from sharing on social media platforms and getting likes. But with Inkdot, people can see their photos printed in a tactile, tangible way, something you can hold in your hand, and easily put up in your house, something you can experience every day. The nice thing about the Wood Print is that it comes ready to hang, you don’t need to put it in a frame and pay extra. And, our distinctive printed products return you to that memory, and help bring the stories behind the photos back to life again.

The Larkins, who have a wide-format printing background working in their father’s business, feel they’ve caught the right wave with their business, brought on by the affordability and progress of printer technology and the growth of high quality photos.

John explains, “We didn’t want to focus on printing every photo but wanted to print those unique images — while also thinking, let’s pair it with some really cool, high-end materials.” Nate smoothly continues, “We were really testing the assumption that you can only print on certain materials, like paper. By using different grades of wood, we were creating our own medium to print on.”

2015-09-04-1441388355-7595859-13_noborder.jpg

On the wall, Golden Gate Bridge captured on 24×36 Wood Print

In their ongoing goal to create new mediums and a new sort of art, the brothers also feature select artists and designers whose related products are available to customers in Inkdot’s “marketplace.” John explains, “By hosting different digital artists, we’re promoting their designs to work in combination with what our clients want.”

But the Larkins have also glommed onto another change, as Nate suggests:

There’s been a lull in printing, with people storing all those digital photos. But now it’s coming back to people remembering those photo albums they used to go through at their parents’ house, and now wanting to experience that again. We see this push back to printing physical photos. And the response we’re getting, especially with material like our Wood Prints and Metal Prints, people are blown away by the quality. We’re not here to print every photo that’s taken on an iPhone. We’re here to print those special photos that mean a lot, and need to be shared with loved ones, friends and family.

2015-09-04-1441388992-8107099-1.jpeg

Sharing special and fun photos on 12×12 Wood Prints

Speaking of family, the Larkin brothers pride themselves on being a family business with John adding:

We’re constantly making sure our products are the best and really take satisfaction in what we do. It’s a family business and we’re going to be around for awhile. We want to grow an awareness about what’s possible. People often leave their photos in the ‘App’ and they don’t actually have the original image stored anywhere. Or, they still aren’t sure that they can print their photos from Instagram. Or that iPhone quality is now good enough to blow up to 24 x 36 size print. So bring us your wedding, memorable event, travel, cute kid or pet images, and we’ll creatively bring your stories and memories back to life.

Follow Inkdot on Instagram and Facebook.

14 Amazing Vintage Photos of Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, and More ’90s Supermodels

Seeing Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, and other ’90s supermodels reunite for a pretty epic photo shoot yesterday got us feeling a bit nostalgic for the days when Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington sashayed down the runways, wore the most amazing clothes, and basically made life look like the ultimate party. They were the OG Girl Squad!

But since Instagram wasn’t around in the ’90s (can you imagine?!), here are 14 vintage photos of your favorite ’90s fashion plates that’ll have you wanting to tap “like” over and over again:

These Photos Capture The Spirit Of New Orleans, 10 Years After Katrina

It’s been a slow recovery since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans 10 years ago, but residents are hopeful that the city is returning to its roots.

New Orleanians are repopulating their city, reestablishing festive traditions, repairing historic landmarks, rebuilding churches and reinvigorating the educational system.

Things like “Who dat Saints” and Mardi Gras have always been staples in its rich history — but it is the people who have undeniably made New Orleans the cultural hub it is today.

President Obama described the city as a place where “the jazz makes you cry and the funerals make you dance,” during his speech in New Orleans on Thursday.

Here are 35 uplifting photos that show resilient New Orleanians and capture the spirt of the city, one decade after Katrina:

In Venice, Politics vs. Photos

Mystery and intrigue may be synonymous with the city of Venice, but the latest imbroglio between politicians and preservationists there seems a little more ham-handed.

Why have you banned this photo exhibit,” tweeted Venetophile and publisher JoAnn Locktov to Luigi Brugnaro, mayor of Venice, on August 14. “Are you so scared of the truth?

Yes, it is true, we are afraid of how you know how to mystify reality,” shot back the mayor in Italian.

At issue is an exhibition, postponed by the mayor, of photographs depicting cruise ships that grotesquely dwarf the architecture of St. Mark’s Square and other Venetian landmarks. More than 500 ships dock there annually, flooding the city’s streets and canals with tourists. And there’s talk of dredging the city’s canals to accommodate even more.

“On some days, there are seven to 10 cruises that can easily mean more than 20,000 visitors in a day for seven to eight months,” says Venice-based photographer Marco Secchi. “Venice has a major issue with mass tourism — last year there were 27 millions visitors.”

2015-08-27-1440706184-743718-gardin3.jpg

The new mayor, elected in June on a platform to keep the port in Venice, canceled the photo exhibition at a gallery in the venerated Doge’s Palace. It was to feature works by Gianni Berengo Gardin, who’s been hailed by the U.K.’s Telegraph as Italy’s greatest photographer. Brugnaro evidently intends to display them later, together with an exhibit of his own plans for dredging the city’s lagoon and canals. It’s caused quite the outcry.

Marco Secchi, Photographer, Venice

If the photos do not represent your reality, let the people decide,” tweeted the San Francisco-based Locktov.

You aren’t the people,” replied the mayor. “You see only yourself and your friends.”

“Friends” seems a near-Freudian slip in wording. The city’s port comes under control of the Venice Port Authority (VPA), with former Mayor of Venice Costa Paolo its president. In 1997, the VPA set up the Venezia Terminal Passeggeri, a commercial enterprise dedicated to managing cruise ship traffic in the port. VPA, Marco Polo Airport and the local chamber of commerce all have shares in the initiative.

Preservationists and lovers of the city’s mystique would like to see the ships dock elsewhere. “The ‘No Big Ship Committee’ is asking not to ban the cruises, but to stop them at the Lido, creating a new tourism port,” Secchi says.

2015-08-27-1440706356-9666905-DSC_8173copy.jpg

Marco Secchi, Photographer, Venice

The institutions responsible for finding alternative routes or strategies for cruise ships are many, while the decision-making pathways are tangled and muddled, adds Jane Da Mosto, author of The Science of Saving Venice. “What’s clear are the strong economic pressures of the cruise lobby,” she adds.

And “the last thing they (VPA) want is for ships to dock somewhere else, because of money,” says Anna Somers Cocks, CEO of The Art Newspaper in London and former head of the ‘Venice in Peril’ fund, which has raised 10 million pounds for the preservation of the city.

Fears of another Costa Concordia disaster in the lagoon surrounding Venice run high. But there’s more: dredging the canals to accommodate more and larger ships runs the risk of stirring up detritus from a 1960s petrochemical operation. “Ships would come into the petrochemical trench, then turn into a deeper trench into the port — they want to dig it 10 meters deep from six, and 100 meters wide from 50,” Cocks says.

2015-08-27-1440706463-9268441-3DS_7810copy.jpg

Marco Secchi, Photographer, Venice

Heavy metal waste from the petrochemical industry lies at the bottom of the lagoon — it’s highly toxic, but resting quietly for the moment. “There are particles of extremely poisonous chemicals” she says. “As soon as you start digging around, you release them into the lagoon.”

The photography exhibition might have served as a catalyst for change — but the mayor’s delay unveils a different scenario. “It all has to do with what’s going to happen to the port,” she says. “People are lobbying for the protection of the city, and then there are those who say ‘You’re living in cuckoo-land — let’s make as much money as we can.'”

Which may result in some unintended consequences for a city that’s increasingly dependent economically on tourists, rather than its dwindling tax base of shops and residents.

As Locktov tweeted the mayor, it’s “not a good idea to insult the people who fill your coffers with euro.”

Not to mention unleashing deadly toxins into your lagoon.

Haunting Photos Show The Real New Orleans, Through Hope And Despair

David Spielman’s New Orleans is solemn and still, a place where cat’s claw vines creep up walls and consume entire houses. A staircase leads to an empty lot where a building once stood; a piano sits outside on a sunny day, unplayed and sharing space with a pile of tires. The photographer captures scenes from around the city, and the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation are everywhere.

“I wanted to create a sense of what it was like and how it impacted everybody,” said Spielman, whose photographs are collected in the book The Katrina Decade: Images of an Altered Citywhich was released this summer. Some of the images are currently on display in an accompanying exhibition at the Historic New Orleans Collection.

Spielman set out to capture the overlooked areas of the city.

“One of the things that I think is very, very important, is, sadly, the media has kind of construed Katrina’s primary damage to the Lower 9th Ward,” he told The Huffington Post. “They fail to fully capture the fact that over 80 percent of the city of New Orleans was flooded.”

“Hopefully,” he added, “people will start to realize that Katrina was an equal and ecumenical destruction.”

The 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina won’t mark the end of Spielman’s efforts to depict a long and wide-ranging view of a changing New Orleans. He has been photographing his city for four decades and says he plans to continue “until the day before I die.”

“The event was the hurricane. The story was the aftermath,” Spielman said.

A few of Spielman’s photographs depict people, but his focus is mostly on the city’s architecture and “the battle between nature and the destruction.”

“Although there are no people in the pictures, you know when you look at those houses covered in vines, that was somebody’s home,” he said. “So when you think about these houses that have been around for well over 100 years, you think of the generations of people.”

The collection of black and white images (shot on film, with a Leica camera) is ambiguous, evading easy description. That’s partially intentional for Spielman, who contrasts his quiet scenes with some of the more dramatic portrayals of New Orleans after the storm hit.

In his book, Spielman quotes the photographer Robert Frank, one of his major influences. He recited the quote from memory in our phone interview: “Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.”

Through the rich and numerous shades of gray in his photographs, Spielman captures a blend of that hope and despair: The storm has passed, but left an indelible mark on New Orleans.

25 Candid Photos That Show Breastfeeding Is Beautiful, Wherever You Nurse

After photos from her Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project (PABP) spread widely across the Internet last August, photographer and mom of four Leilani Rogers is continuing to normalize the sight of nursing and support lactating moms.

In honor of National Breastfeeding Awareness Month this year, Rogers recruited over 70 photographers in the U.S., Australia, Italy, U.K., Venezuela and Canada to take pictures of moms nursing their children in public places like libraries, parks, stadiums and grocery stores. She’s also invited other parents and photographers to share their own breastfeeding images on the project’s Facebook page or on their own social media accounts with the hashtag #PBAP2015.

Rogers was inspired by her own experiences with breastfeeding to launch the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project in 2014, she told The Huffington Post. Though she overcame challenges with mastitis, bad latches, low supply, plugged ducts, thrush, staph infections and more, she says the one issue she was never able to face was her fear of breastfeeding in public.

“I avoided it at all costs,” the mom said, explaining that she feared stares and judgment from strangers so much that she retreated to her house and made life more difficult by planning everything around each baby’s feeding schedule. “I wish I could go back and tell my former self not to care so much about what other people thought. Not to be ashamed of my body. Not to be self-conscious about openly doing what nature intended.”

Rogers hopes the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project will empower moms by offering the support and community she wished she had. She also believes it may help break down the struggles breastfeeding moms face, not only in nursing successfully but also in overcoming societal barriers and expectations. ”Society’s support is paramount to a breastfeeding mother’s success,” she said. “Mothers are hiding in their cars, restrooms, sometimes not leaving their homes at all — because they do not want to face the kind of public scrutiny that causes someone to file a complaint with managers and store owners about a woman breastfeeding in a public place.”

By encouraging other moms to participate in PBAP photo sessions or follow the project’s Facebook page, she hopes they will gain the confidence to nurse in public. Rogers would also like her images to reach non-parents. ”My hope is that seeing these images will help desensitize them, or even reprogram their thinking that breasts are sexual and that breastfeeding is an extension of that. It’s not,” she said.

“Perhaps you haven’t witnessed a mother breastfeeding in public before,” she continued. “You’re not sure what you would do if you happened to turn the corner in the grocery store and run right into a mother juggling her life with a breastfeeding child in tow. These images also serve the purpose of positive, gentle exposure.”

Keep scrolling for a sample of the beautiful images of mothers nursing their babies in public from photographers across the globe.

These Photos Show The Beautifully Unique Ways These People Express Their Gender

The world is certainly changing for queer people.

From more and more people being able to live as their authentic selves to ensuring rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community via legislation, the last few years have seen especially overwhelming progress in terms of the growing cultural awareness surrounding this community.

A new photography book from Bernd Ott and Emily Besa aims to capture this reality through photos and stories of over 36 individuals who identify at different points along the spectrum of gender identity. Called All The People, the book features individuals from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and the United States who all uniquely transcend traditional notions of gender.

“We hope that some will see that your identity is not defined by socially introduced categorizations,” Ott told The Huffington Post. “Once we can see categories as being arbitrary and meaningless, some may realize that we all share very similar fears and emotions and the same worries and feelings determine our existence. We actually share the same human experience despite what we look like, who we love, or how we love.”

Check out photos from All The People below, as well as an interview with Ott and Besa. All The People is also engaged in a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund its publication — head here for more information.

Painfully Close Photos Of Human Faces Look Strangely Inhuman

Glance at a crowd of people from a great enough distance and they’ll cease to even look human, their particular parts fading out of focus until the pack resembles a uniform army of flesh-colored toy soldiers.

Zoom in and you’ll see their hands and hair and the choice of shoes. Keep going and you’ll make out the shapes of their noses, the textures of their faces, the color of their eyes. Keep zooming and the temporary relief of human familiarity is ripped off like a scab, as every tooth, every ear, every pimple, every scar, becomes a singular visual event.

Brooklyn-based photographer Bruce Gilden gets close. So close, in fact, that by gazing upon one of his color portraits you can almost feel hot breath emanating from them, smelling just a bit sour. “You know, I’m photographing people that are not only left behind in most cases, but they’re actually invisible because people don’t want to see them,” Gilden explained in an interview with GUP Magazine.

“I get close because I try to get close to the soul of the people in my pictures,” he added. On the way to the soul, Gilden surely gets a good glimpse of the face, every blemish, wrinkle and pore, turning one of photography’s most tried and true tropes — portraiture — into something unsettling, a little gut-wrenching.

Gilden, who is now 68 years old, has been taking photographs since 1968, when he was a student in college. He’s known for his impulsive style, catching intriguing pedestrians off guard, leaping before them with his camera in one hand and his flash in the other. “Some are taken unawares, some are surprised,” he told PBS. “Some didn’t know what hit them. And I think most people like to be photographed. But since I work in a spontaneous way, I have to be a little bit sneaky because I don’t want them to know that I’m going to take a picture of them.”

Gilden’s series, “Face,” captures the full frontal expressions of people he describes as “underdogs,” those outside the zones of gentrification, not privileged enough to possess the plasticky exterior of the masses. Finding subjects in places from Las Vegas to Des Moines to Milwaukee to West Bromwich, England, Gilden snaps their every quirk and blemish with the authority of a mugshot and the precision of a medical image. Whiteheads bulge with the promise of puss, foundation cakes up like dust gathering on a corpse. What Lucian Freud did to the body Gilden does to the head.

Gilden is not, however, spotlighting his subjects as particularly grotesque aberrations of the human being. He himself identifies with the outsider status of his subjects, and he respects them for it. “I identify with these people in my pictures, because I’m actually photographing myself. The people in my pictures interest me. I like them, and they motivate me.”

Gilden’s portraits may be unforgiving, brutal, ugly, even grotesque. Yet this visceral ugliness isn’t the signal of a monster, but of a human being. One not sanitized and scrubbed clean, buttoned up and plugged in. For Gilden, the ugly is the good stuff, and maybe even lets the soul peer out.

92 Gorgeous Photos That Show What It Really Means To Be Trans

Last summer, HuffPost Gay Voices asked transgender people to share photos of themselves on Twitter using the hashtag #WhatTransLooksLike in an effort to show just how diverse — and beautiful! — the trans community is.

We were absolutely gobsmacked by the response we received. In fact, people were so excited about #WhatTransLooksLike that we received countless requests for us to do another call out.

So, that’s exactly what we did. And it couldn’t have come at a better time. In the 12 months since our first #WhatTransLooksLike story, the “transgender tipping point” has tipped even further.

From Caitlyn Jenner’s gorgeous Vanity Fair cover and emotional ESPY Awards speech to Jazz Jenning’s reality TV show debut to news that transgender soldiers may soon be able to openly serve in the military, we’ve continued to see stunning wins for the trans community in the last year.

Of course, there’s much work left to do. Trans people still face inordinately high levels of prejudice and are regularly targeted for violence. And while representations in the media of what it means to be trans are becoming more varied and nuanced, for the most part, the images, stories and experiences of trans people still do not receive the attention they deserve.

So, for all of those reasons — and because we simply wanted to showcase another collection of beautiful photos — we bring you #WhatTransLooksLike2.
