Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino Loves the ‘Sweet Spot’ of Wedding Planning: ‘Most Guys’ Don’t Get It

Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is having a blast planning his upcoming nuptials to fiancée Lauren Pesce.

“We are in the sweet spot right now and having fun planning the wedding,” the Jersey Shore Family Vacation star tells PEOPLE at the Lunch with the Jersey Shore event at Little Dom’s restaurant in Los Angeles on Friday.

While Sorrentino, 35, admits that he’s been leaving most of the big decisions up to his bride-to-be, he says he’s really enjoyed checking out different venues — and tasting all those wedding cakes!

“I don’t think most guys realize how much goes into planning a wedding. I told her, ‘Babe, just do whatever you want to do,’ ” he adds.

Sorrentino and Pesce, 33, who got engaged on Valentine’s Day, met in 2004 in college and dated for about four years, splitting before the original run of Jersey Shore premiered in 2009. After the MTV series wrapped in 2012, they rekindled the romance and have been together for over four years.

While Pesce previously told PEOPLE the couple didn’t “have a date” picked out yet, she revealed the couple’s “dream was always to go to the motherland and get married in Italy.”

Sorrentino, who is also celebrating 30 months of sobriety, went on to tell PEOPLE that his time with his Jersey Shore castmates was vastly different this time around.

“I was able to make good decisions, stay faithful to my girlfriend back home and stay positive,” he remarks. “I was definitely a little worried about going to the clubs with these guys who can drink and being back in that environment, but I was able to do it.”

Sorrentino, who has battled with a prescription painkiller addiction in the past, previously told PEOPLE that he credits his fiancée with helping him turn his life around.

“What I dreamed of, the expectations I had set for him, him getting healthy and sober — I didn’t know that our relationship would survive had those miracles not happened, and they did,” Pesce said. “He put in the hard work and thanks to the faith in God that we have, we’re in the position we’re in today.”

“She’s definitely my better half and the reason why I strive to be the best version of myself and to fight for our future,” Sorrentino added. “And to show a good example to her, her family and everyone watching — because my life has been under a microscope. I have a lot to prove.”

And as Sorrentino awaits his June 20 sentencing after pleading guilty to tax evasion in a New Jersey federal court in January, he’s maintaining a positive outlook and is hoping for the best — even though he’s facing up to five years in prison.

“I’ve done everything in my power to better myself,” he told PEOPLE prior to the season premiere of Jersey Shore Family Vacation. “I really feel that I’m in the best situation possible.”

“We should receive some closure,” he added. “And I’ll try to move forward with my life.”

Santa Fe Shooting Victim Was Planning to Have 17th Birthday Party the Day After He Was Killed

Days before he was fatally shot in last Friday’s mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas, Jared Black turned 17 years old, according to multiple reports.

He planned to celebrate his birthday with family and friends that Saturday, the New York Times and KTRK report. But what was supposed to be a celebratory week for Jared and his family became a tragic one when Black became one of 10 fatal victims — eight of them students — of the massacre.

“It’s hard,” Jared’s brother, Nick Black, told KTLA. “I still don’t believe it happened. It’s horrible.”

Jared was in first period art class when shots were fired inside the classroom, a man named Travis Stanich wrote on Facebook Friday morning, before he knew Jared was dead.

“He was in the classroom that it started I’m worried sick” Stanich wrote, “Still waiting to find out if Jared is ok.”

Jared loved art, his family told KTLA. A friend paid tribute to the teen with a Facebook post and picture.

“He was my old friend and I cherish every memory I’ve had with him,” the friend wrote. “He will never be forgotten from me.”

Last summer, Jared spent time with his father, two brothers and stepmother in Southern California, KTLA reports.

“It’s wonderful memories like those that will remain in their hearts forever! I’m thankful for that time they spent,” family friend and spokesperson Elizabeth McGinnis wrote on a GoFundMe page to help Jared’s family.

McGinnis was with Jared’s father, Bobby, when he learned his son had been killed.

“Such a rough day for all,” she wrote on the GoFundMe page.

“ sat in misery for 13 hours not knowing if was one of the victims,” McGinnis continued. “Then he got the devastating news after 6 p.m.”

The suspect in the Santa Fe shooting is 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, who is being held in the Galveston County Jail without bond on capital murder charges.

Celebrity Planning Tips For An Unforgettable New Years Eve Party

The countdown to 2017 has officially begun and many of you are looking to throw a festive and fabulous party to ring in the new year. Today, Celebrity planner, Patrizia Cilli, is sharing her top tips for hosting an unforgettable soiree. Cilli is the founder of The Wedding Excellence and has planned events for Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Prince Charles and other high-profile clients. She has just partnered with The Hurawalhi Resort in The Maldives where she is offering 5-star luxury events to destination brides.

Consider guest dynamics. A good party has a great vibe and that requires an interesting (but compatible) mix of guests with enough in common to get along and different enough to keep the conversations colorful. Be sure to introduce your guests to one another, including a fun tidbit about each of them.

Give a warm welcome. There is nothing more blasé than walking into a party and wondering where the host is. Have someone designated to help you greet guests at the door. Take their coat and offer them a beverage from a tray of champagne (or a signature cocktail) and sparkling water nearby. Warm canapes are also lovely to have on-hand.

Set the tone immediately. Stunning decor and details that delight the senses are both essential when it comes to hosting a fabulous New Year’s Eve soiree. Light candles, have a great playlist that builds up through the night (not too loud!) and create a luxurious ambiance with a classic scent such as Baies Limited Edition Deluxe Holiday Candle by Diptyque.

Sit down meals require a table plan. Ideally, you can sit guests next to one person they know and one stranger.

Have a varied menu. Ask guests about any allergies or dislikes when they are invited and have a wide variety of options- vegetarian, gluten-free and offer mocktails for those who don’t drink or don’t want to drink too much.

Beautify the Bathroom. A lovely scented candle, flowers, and a small basket with guest essentials such as mints, mouthwash, deodorant, hairspray, feminine products, and wipes can go a long way to make guests feel comfortable.

Prepare a sparkling toast. Have glasses poured and ready and say a few words before midnight. Countdown to the new year with guests and let the party begin.

A few things to consider:

Taxi’s and Uber’s can be difficult to get on this night. You might want to remind guests to schedule them beforehand or offer up nearby hotel suggestions.

Alcohol typically makes people hungry.
Food is also a great way to absorb excess champagne. Consider offering bite-sized breakfast items if the party runs past 2:00 AM

Buying a small coat rack and extra hangers is essential. It’s much nicer than piling coats and bags on a bed.

Savile Row Tailors Welcome New Planning Restrictions

SAVILE RULES: Westminster Council plans to safeguard Savile Row and other historic London neighborhoods with new measures to keep large chain stores and inappropriate tenants at bay.
According to planning policies put in place this week, any business wanting to move onto Savile Row will only be able to use two floors for retail, while tailors’ workrooms, traditionally located in the basement of the buildings, cannot be removed or re-purposed.
Savile Row — and its surrounding streets — have always been designated for use by offices, restaurants and retail, but in the past there were few measures in place to prevent chains or larger retailers from moving into the neighborhood.
Now businesses that move onto the street will have to sell bespoke, unique, limited-edition or one-of-a-kind products and must be “complementary to the character and function of the zone.”
In 2007, there was outcry from local traders when Abercrombie & Fitch opened a flagship at the corner of Savile Row and Burlington Gardens. It’s more about polos and bikinis than bespoke suits and draws a far different crowd than the Row is accustomed to seeing.
Since then, however, there have been no major upsets on the street, which also counts a variety of high-end businesses, including shoemakers

Defining DIY Wedding Planning — And How to Successfully Do-It-Yourself

I’ve always wanted to be the person to write the formal definition of “DIY” for weddings. God knows, I’ve learned it the hard way. Both in planning my own DIY wedding in 2004, and in helping brides and grooms with the Do-It-Yourself bug find ways to make their personal mark on their wedding planning.

DIYing your wedding planning doesn’t mean that you have to do absolutely everything yourself to make your wedding happen, or that you can’t hire any experienced professionals to help you. DIYing your wedding simply means you’ve taken on the responsibility of coordinating your own wedding plans. There you go — that’s a definition! Pay attention to the “Y” portion of DIY — this means that you and your fiancé have signed up for this great adventure, not your entire family or your wedding party, unless they volunteer to help you.

We all know the DIY-craze has swept this nation. I think it started with all the home improvement shows – we all got sucked into them! Then it was landscaping. And house flipping! Naturally, if it’s possible to do all those things yourself and save a ton of money, it should be easy for brides and grooms to DIY their wedding planning, too. Right?

For some engaged couples, planning the wedding is cake (pun intended), and they have a lot of fun meeting with vendors and arranging every detail for their big day. To enjoy the process, you have to be a very organized person with time available to talk to wedding vendors during normal business hours. You can’t get it all done on weekends because good wedding vendors are booked with other weddings and events. And they don’t want to talk to you at night because they have client commitments a couple nights a week, so they reserve their off-nights for their personal life.

A number of brides and grooms who’ve hired me to plan their weddings started out DIYing it themselves. I didn’t get hired until they had taken the plunge into planning it themselves, and ran into roadblocks they couldn’t defeat on their own. Sometimes, it’s just a shortage of time to track down, play phone tag, and negotiate contracts with vendors. Occasionally, they’ve made bad decisions early in the process that are causing them planning problems further down the line, such as choosing a wedding reception venue that turned out not to be big enough for everyone who accepted their invitation.

With destination wedding DIYers, the problem may be dealing with vendors who are on island time, and not as responsive as a stressed-out bride with an East Coast temperament might like them to be. Frustration causes them to give up and hire a professional to step in and clean up the mess, and finish up all the little details, so the bride and groom can relax and start enjoying their wedding events. Unfortunately, fixing a wedding in distress is often more expensive than hiring a professional from the very beginning. Fixing and re-planning takes an event planner more time than starting the wedding planning from scratch.

Wanna-be DIY brides and grooms who realize they don’t have time to oversee all of their wedding details, and don’t want to be in charge of everything at the actual events, opt to hire a professional event coordinator to make sure their big day goes off without a hitch. These couples will satisfy their DIY itch by hand-making numerous other items for their weddings. I’ve seen my clients monogram everything that would sit still, hand-craft creative invitations, and bottle maple syrup from their family farms for wedding favors. Depending on how creative the couple is, and how much time they have to put into it, brides and grooms really can DIY a whole lot of their wedding details, from the welcome gifts to the programs. It’s all about what the couple wants to do, and what they have time to accomplish before the wedding day. I hand-painted Christmas ornaments as wedding favors, and champagne flutes for each bridesmaid. I wish I were a little more talented with a paintbrush, but they turned out really cute and were appreciated more for the effort than the artistry.

2015-10-29-1446159916-1558984-Pic42SandyschampagneflutesWIV.jpg

Last year, my company started a new service, offering DIY wedding planning consulting services to brides and grooms who didn’t want a wedding planner to coordinate the whole enchilada. We launched this in response to the numerous requests, over the years, for assistance from DIY brides and grooms that we weren’t prepared to help. Most of the time, the brides calling were already neck-deep in their planning and in a total state of panic. And unfortunately, they’d often waited too late to book us because we were already committed to planning other events on their wedding date. I realized that DIY brides and grooms need more help on the front end of planning than at any other time. If they have some guidance on what to do, and what to avoid, at the outset, many wedding-tastrophies would never occur. It’s that whole concept of getting started off on the right foot coming into play.

I preach hiring good, experienced, professional vendors to all the DIYers I encounter. DIYing your wedding doesn’t mean you cannot hire a pastry chef to make your cake, a florist to create your bouquets, and a DJ to spin your tunes at the main event. A wedding planner doesn’t do all that stuff – we hire professionals to do it for you. A happy DIY bride is somebody who has organized things so well that the professionals she’s hired can execute the plan she’s created for her wedding day, without too much assistance or intervention from the wedding couple.

Whatever approach you take to DIYing your wedding, be sure to get everything on your to-do list accomplished ahead of the 30-day-out mark for your wedding. Many things cannot be finished up ahead of time, and you’re going to be very, very busy during your wedding week. Don’t sabotage your own DIY efforts by procrastinating on critical things like a playlist for the DJ, or vow for the wedding ceremony. Get absolutely everything that can be finished in advance wrapped up long before you’re dealing with the stress of the actual wedding week, and you have a much better chance of enjoying your own festivities.

If you’re going to DIY your wedding, do it right from the beginning, and you’ll have a lot more fun at the end! Until next time, happy wedding planning from Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

9 Things No One Tells You About Wedding Planning

It’s an unfortunate, but often inevitable, part of planning a wedding that there are just some things you won’t know or realize until after the big day is over. Sure, you may have a planner or wise family and friends to open your eyes to what’s really worth stressing about or what guests will actually notice, but most of the time, those things don’t dawn on you until later. The best resource for this kind of advice is real brides, so we asked some on the BRIDES Facebook page to share their time-honored insights. Here, some of the best tips:

Make a list of all the most important photos you want taken on your wedding day, give it to your photographer, but make sure you have a copy of it with you so that nobody misses anything. You’ll never get those moments back to get those pictures that you missed that day.” —Dawn Cavaluzzo Cooper

It’s your day! Don’t be so busy appeasing others that you don’t make yourself and you future spouse happy in the process.” —Ashlyn Beierle

It takes approximately 250 hours to plan a wedding… Make sure you have good people by your side. Also, don’t be afraid to ask a professional for help! Whether it is hiring a wedding planner or just having a consultation to figure out a couple things you are stuck on. Most of all, try to relax and don’t take everything so seriously. Understand that things are bound to go wrong, but there are always other options.” —Kailey-Lynn Hatfield

Everything will turn out okay and that no matter what goes wrong during the wedding, there’s always a way to keep the atmosphere positive.” —Ashley Kenny

Things will not go perfect on your wedding day, but you will be the only person to notice it. Don’t stress yourself out when you see the little hiccups and enjoy your day.” —Paulina Cotsaris

Save, save, save money! Weddings are so expensive. I can’t believe how much money my wedding has added up to be. Plan a budget!” —Iesha Palmer

Do not start planning the second you get engaged because you will change your mind on lots of things and have to redo them. I was so excited that I just started planning anything and everything I could. I wish I would have just let getting engaged sink in for a few weeks or months, and then started slow.”– Kayla Lynn

Allow at least a week, and possibly two, to call people that were sent an invitation but didn’t respond.” —Angela Pileggi Pelekanos

I wish I had known more about cultural traditions. I could have incorporated one or two to put a unique stamp on my wedding.” —Taylor Williamson Hebenstreit

Wedding Planning: How To Plan Your Dream Wedding – The Ultimate Guide To Planning An Affordable, Beautiful Wedding On A Budget (Wedding, Wedding Ideas Decorations, Wedding Budget)

Planning a Wedding on a Budget

Should a dream wedding mean delaying a down payment on a home? That’s a tradeoff many couples make these days.

The Knot, a wedding planning and publishing company, recently released its Real Weddings study of average wedding costs for 2014, setting a national average price tag of $ 31,213 (not including the honeymoon). If the average cost of a U.S. wedding now tops $ 30,000, that’s a substantial sum for many couples to balance against other major financial goals. Despite getting married to my wife at family home 15 years ago, I still remember the sticker shock for all the wedding costs — a whopping $ 15,000 for the entire event from tux, dress, flowers, food and honeymoon.

Consider that the average price of a new home in America is now $ 200,000. A 20 percent down payment on that home would be $ 40,000. With the average price of a new vehicle at $ 32,500 and the average used car around $ 16,000, couples with on-road transportation needs might be tempted to trade in a wedding fund to replace one car — or two.

Couples can save considerable money through creative scheduling, direct planning and most important, treating their wedding as just one of many financial issues they’ll navigate in a lifetime. That’s why they might want to consider a little financial planning before the wedding planning starts.

At minimum, couples might begin with a first-time or repeat viewing of their current spending and credit status. A meeting with a qualified financial advisor can provide additional guidance on how the couple could handle all their money issues after marriage. Such big-picture financial advice might set a more realistic framework for wedding planning. After all, The Knot reports that more than half of weddings go over budget.

How can you keep it cheap while still enjoying an event of a lifetime? Here are some ideas:

Marry off-season. The most popular wedding months are now June and October, with longtime leader June losing a bit of ground. The most popular day to get married is Saturday and nighttime is the most competitive time slot for receptions. Consider a January wedding when the post-holiday rush is over — cold weather wedding venues are generally empty and priced to move. Weekday weddings have the potential added bonus of guests drinking less on a work night and weekend brunch weddings can be served buffet-style with more reasonably priced menu choices.

Consider alternative venues. Farms, barns, warehouses, art galleries and of course, family property can be cheaper venues for a wedding, but don’t stop your due diligence at catering issues. Insurance is a big issue — liability related to alcohol, food or other party-related risks may not be covered in the owner’s conventional homeowners or business coverage and the event may require the purchase of a special policy for the night of the event. Also, in many communities, party venues must be properly licensed and/or zoned to avoid fines or legal action.

Watch the extras. From flowers to photography, wedding cake to wedding planners, look for affordable options. If a venue will let you supply your own flowers and decorations, plan far enough in advance to comparison shop and do your own pick-up and set-up if possible. Consider professional photographers or skilled amateurs who meet your tastes and budget.

Consider an alternative online gift registry. You don’t have to settle for three of the same toasters anymore. Today’s couples can set up online gift registries that allow guests to directly fund honeymoon trips or specific expenses associated with the wedding.

Become your own wedding planner. If you are very organized and adept at pricing, negotiating and setting up all venue, food, service and entertainment aspects of your wedding, you’ll see significant savings. Just don’t let the workload overwhelm your big day.

Plan a destination wedding. If you have a tight-knit group of friends and family members who can afford to travel — or if you can pick up everyone’s bill — a destination wedding might turn out to be significantly cheaper option than an in-town wedding with dozens of guests, per-plate dining and entertainment. Resorts around the world and well-known domestic wedding/travel destinations like Las Vegas or Hawaii offer wedding packages that blend a ceremony and vacation getaway.

Be flexible. Spur-of-the-moment decisions may save money. If you have a venue in mind, put your name on a call list and see if you can negotiate a cheaper price if the venue has a cancellation.

Bottom line: As weddings get more expensive, searching for bargains and untraditional venues and services can help couples who don’t want their celebration to overwhelm other important financial goals like buying their first home.

Wedding Planning: How To Plan A Wedding On A Budget That Everyone Will Talk About For Years To Come (Wedding, Wedding Ideas Decorations, Wedding Budget)

5 Common Mistakes to Avoid While Planning Your Wedding

There is nothing more frustrating to me as a wedding planner than a client not taking my advice. As the expert, when giving a suggestion or advice, I back everything up with stories from previous clients who didn’t listen. I’m not saying that I know everything. I am saying that I know more about planning weddings than your sister’s friend’s mother’s aunt’s cousin who “does events” in her spare time. I know this seems harsh but it needs to be said.

These are the five most common mistakes that couples make during the planning process and how to avoid them:

1. The on-site coordinator at your venue is not a wedding planner/coordinator. Often times a venue will add in a “wedding coordinator” as an incentive for you to book your wedding. What they don’t tell you is that they don’t do the same things that an independent wedding planner/coordinator does. They won’t call your vendors to finalize payments and when you realize that you forgot to get a garter two hours before you walk down the aisle, they aren’t hopping in their car to buy one for you. It’s a huge pet peeve because it is incredibly misleading. Brides normally find out how different the on-site coordinator is from an actual wedding planner when it’s too late.

I had a client a few years ago who called in hysterics because the on-site coordinator told her two days before the wedding that she wasn’t going to be at her wedding. She told the bride as if it was obvious that she wouldn’t be there. They had worked together for over a year. I stepped in two days before the wedding because of this very reason.

2. DIY doesn’t always mean cheaper. Pinterest has fooled brides into thinking that they can do anything just by looking at a pretty picture. If you weren’t crafty before your wedding, you’re probably not crafty now. There is nothing worse than seeing a bunch of DIY projects strewn throughout your reception that look like your 5 year old neighbor put them together for a pack of gum. If you can’t afford exactly what you want, find another alternative.

3. Stop trying to replicate someone else’s wedding. Make your wedding YOUR wedding. A few years ago I had a client whose wedding everyone dreamed of having. From the bridesmaid’s gowns to the centerpieces, this wedding was in high demand. I don’t discuss client’s budgets with anyone so they didn’t know how expensive everything was. One of my clients printed out pictures from my Instagram account and brought them to our design meetings. I gently would tell her that those particular centerpieces were extremely expensive and I’d present a few alternatives. Determined to have those exact centerpieces, she and her family put them together themselves. Once she saw them in the room, she had me remove them from each table and asked me to put the flowers directly on the table. I’m not an “I told you so” person but…

4. Just because someone has a “nice” camera, doesn’t make them a photographer. This is one of the biggest challenges that I face when it comes to my client’s booking a photographer. I cringe every time I hear, “my cousin has a nice camera so she’ll be taking our pictures.” Why would you spend thousands of dollars on the most important day of your life but not invest in the photos that will last forever? I’m not saying that you have to break the bank but if you’re spending more money on your invitations than your photographer, there is a problem.

5. Don’t lie about your budget. If your budget is $ 60,000 but you’d like to stick to around $ 50,000, tell your planner that. Whenever a client gives me their initial budget, I ask them if that’s the actual budget or if that’s the number that they want to stay close to. Believe it or not, knowing how much we have to work with in the beginning will possibly save you money in the end. Weddings are expensive and most people don’t know exactly how costly they are.

Planning a Honeymoon? Don’t Miss These 6 Tips!

Some days I wish I could go back and plan our wedding all over again. Just kidding, I would never wish for that, but what I DO wish I could do is plan our honeymoon all over again. We were less than thrilled with Costa Rica (you can’t win them all!), but you can’t go wrong using any of the below tips.
2014-11-24-IMG_4458.JPG
(Sometimes I do re-live our honeymoon just to look at my smoking hot husband. #realtalk)

Planning a honeymoon? Here is some of my best advice!

1. Don’t use a travel agent. They are getting commission off the packages they sell to you, so they’re going to guide you toward the packages where they receive the highest revenue. I would do the same thing! What I’m saying is–only you know what you will like. The reality is that the majority of these travel agents have never been to the resorts and destinations they’re selling you on. Before our honeymoon, we had always booked trips ourselves and figured we would take a chance since we had heard great things regarding travel agents making THE BEST arrangements. Never again, lesson learned.

2. If you’re going to a tropical, all-inclusive type of place, you will live in your swimsuit, so pack accordingly. I got this advice before we went on ours and made sure I had a different bathing suit for everyday, as well as a new cover-up. It helps later when you’re trying to differentiate days via photos

3. If you have any sort of food allergies, pack things like granola bars, that you know you’ll be able to eat in a pinch. My husband verified with our resort that I would have plenty to eat with a gluten allergy, but when we got there it was a totally different story. Being sick for eight days on your honeymoon IS NOT fun. Thankfully, I always keep at least one box of KIND bars in my suitcase when I travel.

4. Use your days to unwind and completely unplug. I know, I know. You want to look at all your wedding photos, check in on Facebook & Instagram and make sure your email inbox hasn’t imploded. I did, too! Save it for the evenings when your significant other is grabbing a shower or you have some downtime before dinner. Spend your daytime simply taking in your time off!

5. This one seems obvious, but I was completely aloof. For international travel regardless of if the resort says you will not need it, bring a converter. So many of our plug-in items (hairdryer, toothbrush, razor, etc.) completely failed on us mid-trip because we weren’t able to charge them! The items we were able to charge made this horrendous buzzing noise that led me to believe they would explode at any given moment. Just pack that darn converter.

6. Again for international travel, make sure your passport is up to date! One thing that didn’t happen to me, but happened to a friend is in regards to passports and name changing. If you plan on taking a later honeymoon and have changed your name officially, make sure your passport matches the name on the ticket! They will 100 percent not let you on the plane otherwise. YIKES!

3 Things I Know Now That I Wish I Knew While Wedding Planning

The gifts have been unwrapped, the cards opened, the veil put away, and the dress dropped off at the cleaners. The honeymoon has come and gone, a blissful week spent amongst coconut trees and rainforests in Costa Rica. Reality has set back in after more than a year of wedding planning, and I’m not suffering from those “post-wedding blues” that everyone talks about.

Don’t get me wrong — our wedding was the most amazing day, surrounded by loving family and friends, set to the soundtrack of slammin’ ’90s hits all night long. I wouldn’t trade a second of it for anything else. But I won’t lie to you. The morning after our wedding, I woke up with this incredible lightness. Was it because I just married the love of my life? Yes. Was it also because the biggest stressor of my life for the past year and a half was now over and I could go back to real life? Yes, yes, yes, a million times, yes. As my husband and I drove away from the bed and breakfast we stayed at in our small hometown, I couldn’t help but think with insatiable giddiness, it’s over. Thank God. And then right after that, oh my goodness. I just had a year-long panic attack over a mere 12 hours. TWELVE HOURS. Dear lord.

I’m an anxious person by nature. I hardly ever sleep a full night without waking up like five times, I’m prone to panic, and big changes freak me out. Throw something like planning a wedding on top of all that, and you’re looking at a full-blown basket case by the time the shindig rolled around. I can recount actual nightmares I have had about mundane things like rental chairs not showing up, or ordering pizza for the reception because the food was missing (actually, pizza might have been pretty cool, but dream Alex wasn’t having it) or worse, no one dancing and just glumly sitting at their tables. One morning, the week of the wedding, I completely missed my train stop on the way to work, my head somewhere up in the wedding clouds. I was sure I was going slightly insane. You can call my mother and she will attest to this. The poor woman fielded many a panicked wedding call, mostly about things on the below list. (Sorry, mom. I love you!)

1. Stop worrying so much about the damn weather.
In the three weeks leading up to my outdoor wedding, I became an expert in online weather sites, ranging from Accuweather to WeatherSpark to The Weather Channel to WeatherBug… I could keep going. I reached a point where I was spending a solid 30 minutes at a time weather sleuthing, jumping seamlessly from site to site and map to map. I suffered so much angst when it was forecasted approximately 15 days out that there would be a 70 percent chance of rain (depending on which site that I was looking at) on the day of the wedding. Because you know, 15 days out is a completely accurate amount of time to forecast the weather. (Hint: It’s not. Please don’t take that forecast seriously.) Checking the weather became so second nature that I was still watching weather reports and checking weather apps the morning of the wedding when the sun was streaming through my windows. You know, just in case.

2. You are the only person who will notice if one thing goes wrong.
Luckily for us, nothing really “went wrong” during the day. There were a few minor hiccups that only my husband and I noticed. For example, I spent so much time in the months before worrying over the outdoor sound system so that both my cousin could play our ceremony music and our officiant could have a microphone to use. I found a small, portable, battery-powered guitar amp, specifically with a mic input so that my cousin could play his guitar, and we could plug a mic in for our officiant to be heard. I was standing across from my husband and after getting over the shock of, you know, walking down the aisle, this thought flashed (very quickly) through my head:

….Where’s the microphone? Can people hear? Oh, well. Can’t fix it now.

The microphone my cousin brought didn’t end up working, and there had been no time to get a new one. The ceremony went on as is, our officiant’s voice booming without a mic. The whole ceremony was still beautiful. Moral of the story: just calm down. It’s all going to be fine.

3. Don’t care about what other people will think of your wedding.
I come from an Italian background where one Sunday dinner feeds you and your entire extended family, plus the neighbors and whoever else you feel like, for a week because all you do is just eat all. day. long. There’s a reason that stereotypes exist about Italian weddings. Our wedding was the antithesis to your typical Italian grandeur — I spent more time than I should have worried about what my extended family would think about my small-ish, outdoor, non-religious (read: not Catholic) ceremony with a reception at our local brewery where we had cocktail food and a taco bar. I’m not really sure why I focused so much energy on the judgements of everyone else when at the end of the day, I knew that my husband and I LOVED the wedding that we had planned. That really should have been good enough for me — it would have saved me a lot of needless anxiety.

Everything about our wedding was perfect to me. I loved watching my 10-year-old sister dance with my husband, I loved spending time with both of our families, and I loved the fact that I both laughed and cried when we said our vows. It was a beautiful, magical day — and I never, ever, ever want to do it again.

How To Ask These 5 Awkward Wedding Planning Questions

By Laura Fredricks for Bridal Guide

Need to ask your parents for money or your ‘maids to spring for a pricey frock? Here, “ask expert” Laura Fredricks shows you how to get the answers you want to hear.

In wedding planning, as in life, there are uncomfortable topics you have to cover, so knowing the right way to ask (instead of argue) for things gives you a way to resolve any possible ripples before they become tidal waves. When the asking is out of the way, there’s more time for enjoying, celebrating and making memories. Isn’t that what your big day is supposed to about? Here, some ideas.

How to ask your guests to travel for a destination wedding:

Asking your friends to get on board with this can be difficult. Between time off from work and the cost of travel and lodgings, a lot of friends and family might find it difficult and expensive to attend. It’s ideal to give your potential guests as much notice as possible. Read our destination wedding countdown calendar.

You could start by saying, "We would love to have you help us celebrate and I know this will require extra time and money on your part. Do you think you could make a vacation around the wedding? I’m sure we can work with the hotel to get you extended nights at our wedding rates."

How to ask for someone not to be in your bridal party:

It’s no secret that with two sets of families involved, assumptions will be made that might not necessarily mesh with your big-day plans — but what do you do when a friend assumes she’ll be part of the bigger festivities? Instead of hoping and praying your friend will understand, get in front of the conversation and say, "I would have loved to have a larger bridal party, but I hope you can support our decision to keep it small — I’m asking that this not jeopardize our friendship." Read how to choose your bridesmaids.

Reinforce how important your friend is to you and ask her to participate in another special wedding activity, emphasizing how much that would mean to you. Not everyone will understand but by asking for their support, you can feel good that you recognized a friend’s feelings and want to remain close.

How to ask parents to help pay for some of the wedding costs:

Asking parents for money on your special day is such a sensitive issue because no one wants to deter from the happiness of getting married by focusing on money. The best way to keep the “wedding bliss” while addressing the money realities is to lead with the things you are paying for and ask for the money to cover what’s left. See the traditional wedding budget breakdown.

For example: "Mom/Dad, you know we couldn’t be happier at this time in our lives. We’re going to have the wedding of our dreams, but we’re feeling the financial pressure between the caterers, flowers, bridesmaids’ dresses and limousines. Would it be possible for you to pay for the rehearsal dinner? We kept the wedding party to our closest friends and family and we can work with the site on the menu so that it won’t cost a fortune."

How to ask your parents/in-laws to cut the guest list:

The hardest part in planning any wedding is keeping everyone happy, and it seems as if that’s nearly impossible when creating the guest list. Everyone has their own definition of what makes up a "short guest list". One approach may be to recognize your parents/in-laws’ excitement to share your wedding with everyone but explain to them that you’ve always envisioned your big day as something small and intimate. Read how to get your guest list under control.

In that case, you may ask, "It is wonderful that you want to invite so many friends to share in our special day but my dream has always been to keep it on the smaller side. I’m so happy we are planning this as a family — can we work together to keep the list a bit shorter? I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings but I would rather have a smaller, more intimate ceremony."

How to ask your bridesmaids to spend some hard-earned cash:

Many bridesmaids may not have extra cash to spend, particularly if they are a student, recently out of work or have debt or other family obligations. The best thing a bride can do is ask her bridesmaids to spend a little of their own money, while helping them look for ways to save at the same time. Get solutions for the biggest bridesmaid dilemmas.

Try saying "I know all this adds up to a lot of money and the last thing I want to do is put my friends and family in financial hardship. We’re happy to help with your [select any of the following that fits into your budget] travel expenses, hair and makeup costs for the big day or the cost of your dress."

Author, speaker and Expert on the Ask, Laura Fredricks has shared her expertise in The Wall Street Journal and other publications.

Whitney Port Dishes On Wedding Planning And Her Fiancé

Lover.ly — search, save, shop and share wedding ideas in one place.

It’s going to be a “bohemian desert” wedding for Whitney Port!

The designer and star of MTV’s “The City” got engaged to Tim Rosenman, who was an associate producer on her show, in November 2013 and kicked off her wedding planning in Los Angeles recently with a bridal luncheon hosted by Wedding Paper Divas. Port announced that she’ll be collaborating with the stationery brand on an invitation suite, due out later this year. In attendance at the luncheon were Port and Rosenman, along with Port’s sister, Ashley, co-founder of BK Events, who is planning Port and Rosenman’s wedding.

I had a chance to sit down with Port and get the inside scoop on her relationship and all things wedding.

Stephanie Hallett
: How would you describe your fiancé in three words?

Whitney Port: Comfortable, patient, and funny.

SH: What’s the sweetest thing he has ever done for you?

WP: I feel like he does sweet things for me every day. My father passed away this past year and just the way that [Tim] has been there for me and been patient with me has probably been the most special thing to me.

SH: What’s one thing that no one knows about your relationship?

WP: We’re really, really low key, we’re homebodies, we don’t really like to do much. Our favorite nights are the nights when we don’t really have any plans and we can just cook each other dinner and hang out.

SH: Are you keeping your name after marriage?

WP: I’m going to keep Port and add Rosenman.

SH: How’s wedding planning going?

WP: It’s going well! The first couple months of being engaged were really just enjoying that and not thinking too much about it. Once the new year hit I was like, OK, I want to start [planning]. We’re 95 percent sure on a location and other than that there’s not much else that I’ve planned. I have my secret Pinterest board where you can see my inspiration, but I haven’t gone too far into anything else.

SH: I read that you’re designing your own wedding dress.

WP: I’m hoping to! I feel like I want the experience of trying on dresses and seeing what works for me, and I feel like that’s such the classic, typical, fun moment when everyone sees you in your gown. But I’m so particular, and obviously I design clothes for a living, so I feel like it would be a fun process for me to design exactly what I know works well on me. So I’m hoping to do that unless for some reason I find a dress that I love.

SH: Do you have a style or something in mind that you know you like?

WP: I know for me comfort is key; at my wedding I want to have fun, I want to dance, I want to not feel like my dress is restricting me from anything, so something definitely more streamlined.

SH: What’s your best advice for brides who are stressed out by wedding planning?

WP: I think at the end of the day they just have to remember what they’re doing this for. There’s obviously a huge light at the end of the tunnel and they’ve just got to get their priorities in order.

Architecture and Patterns for IT Service Management, Resource Planning, and Governance: Making Shoes for the Cobbler’s Children: Making Shoes for the Cobbler’s Children

Architecture and Patterns for IT Service Management, Resource Planning, and Governance: Making Shoes for the Cobbler’s Children: Making Shoes for the Cobbler’s Children

How would you feel if you visited your financial planner’s office and saw past-due credit card notices on their desk? Would you trust an auto mechanic whose car backfires and produces black smoke? A dentist with bad teeth? A banker in shabby clothes? An interior designer whose offices are a shambles? This is the position of the IT capability in many large organizations. The designated custodian of critical business processes and data does not manage its own processes and data reliably. A response in the form of Enterprise Resource Planning for Information Technology is emerging from major companies, research firms, and vendors; they are labeling these offerings “ERP for IT,” “IT Resource Planning,? and related terms. This groundbreaking, practitioner-authored book provides an independent examination of and response to these developments. An analysis of the large scale IT capability, with specific attention to business processes, structured data, and enabling systems, it is essentially a comprehensive systems architecture, not for the business capabilities IT supports, but for IT itself. Features The book presents on-the-ground coverage of enabling IT governance in architectural detail, which you can use to define a strategy and start executing. It fills the gap between high-level guidance on IT governance, and detailed discussions about specific vendor technologies. It is a next-step book that answers the question: OK, we need to improve the way we run IT – now what? It does this through: * A unique value chain approach to integrating the COBIT, ITIL, and CMM frameworks into a coherent, unified whole * A field-tested, detailed conceptual information model with definitions and usage scenarios, mapped to both the process and system architectures * Analysis of current system types in the IT governance and enablement domains: integration opportunities, challenges, and evolutionary trends * Patterns for integrating the process, data, and systems views to support sp
