Pope Francis Speaks Out Against the Commercialization of Christmas in Midnight Mass

Pope Francis led the annual Christmas Eve Mass, known as the Midnight Mass, in a packed St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday.

To ring in Christmas and celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Sistine Chapel choir sang “Gloria” and the basilica’s bells rang out across Rome.

In his homily, Francis urged his flock to reflect on how children today aren’t always allowed to lie peacefully in a cot, loved by their parents as Jesus was, but rather “suffer the squalid mangers that devour dignity,” according to the Associated Press.

“Let us allow ourselves to be challenged by the children who are not allowed to be born, by those who cry because no one satiates their hunger, by those who do have not toys in their hands, but rather weapons,” he said.

In another appeal, Francis called for the faithful to not get caught up in the commercialization of Christmas – “when we are concerned for gifts but cold toward those who are marginalized.” Materialism has “taken us hostage this Christmas,” he said. “We have to free ourselves of it!”

The Pope, who celebrated his 80th birthday last week, delivered Christmas greetings to Vatican employees and their families on Thursday, according to Vatican Radio.

Saturday’s late night Mass, which was live streamed at 3:15 p.m. ET, was the first major event of the Christmas season, followed by the Pope’s noon Urbi et Orbi (To the city and the world) blessing on Christmas Day.

Why Pope Francis’ Christmas Card This Year Has Two Baby Jesuses

Every year, Pope Francis digs into the Catholic church’s centuries-old treasure trove of religious art and chooses an image for the front of his Christmas card.

For Christmas 2016, Francis has chosen a scene from a fourteenth-century fresco painted by the artist Giotto di Bondone inside a church in Assisi, Italy.

The image has all the usual hallmarks of a modern-day nativity scene ― shepherds, angels, animals, and the Virgin Mary. But take a closer look and you’ll realize that there’s something a little odd about this Christmas tableau.

There are two baby Jesuses ― one held by Mary and another held by a midwife sitting underneath her.

According to the National Catholic Register, this 1313 fresco is one of few in the world that uses two little children to represent Jesus, whom Christians believe is the son of God. The Catholic site reports that Giotto painted Jesus twice to illustrate two sides of his nature ― the human and the divine.

The two midwives at Mary’s feet are embracing and supporting one of the babies. A representative for the church’s convent, Enzo Fortunato, said in a statement that this emphasizes the idea that Jesus is not a stranger to the world, but “part of the humanity to which we belong,” according to an NCR translation.

Both babies are wrapped tightly in swaddling clothes, which Fortunato said recalls the need to “alleviate the suffering of others.”

It’s also significant that the fresco is located at Assisi, the same town where the pope’s namesake, Saint Francis of Assisi, was born. Fortunato told Ansa that Pope Francis chose the painting from Assisi because “St. Francis was the one who invented the Nativity scene.”

In fact, according to an early biography, St. Francis of Assisi staged the very first nativity scene in 1223, as a way to share the message of Christmas with his neighbors. Catholic worship services were only said in Latin during that time, which most laypeople didn’t understand. So St. Francis set up a manger with hay and live animals, and invited people to come take a look while he shared the story of Jesus’ birth.

Fortunata suggested that the nativity practice started by St. Francis was part of the saint’s vision to reach all levels of society ― the rich and poor, literate and illiterate.

In the end, Giotto’s Nativity isn’t a surprising art choice for Pope Francis ― a leader who has made it his mission to find ways to reach out to the margins of his church.

Bill Maher Thinks GOP Should Listen To Pope Francis On Climate Change

Bill Maher praised Pope Francis’ views on climate change on “Real Time” Friday night.

While admitting to have “mixed feelings” about the pope, the host did appreciate his views on this particular topic, especially in contrast to those held by many Republican representatives in Congress.

“I think it’s just awesome that this pope took on this issue,” Maher said. “I love that Boehner invited him to talk to Congress, and there he was the Grandmaster Flash of crazy non-evidentiary nonsense, lecturing the Republicans on reality.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Maher discussed British Prime Minister David Cameron, Kim Davis and Josh Duggar.

Sister Sledge Performs for Pope Francis in Philly, Readies to Release New Single

Sister Sledge needs only three words to identify them: “We Are Family.”
That 1978 breakout hit rocketed the Philadelphia foursome of Debbie. Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge to fame. The latter has since gone solo, but nearly 40 years after the song’s release, the sisters were back at it Saturday, belting out the song for Pope Francis at the Festival of Families.
In a phone interview earlier this week, Joni Sledge said, “This song in particular is a gift. In this particular case, it was made for this day.”
And no matter how much of an anthem it has become, the song’s relevance remains intact, Joni Sledge said. “It’s just as powerful today. That’s one of the good things about it. It teaches respect. It’s kind of deep and teaches [that] we don’t have to profile, we don’t have to wear the latest fashions — we can just be one big family.”
To be chosen to perform for the pope, the Sledges submitted a video that featured clips from their world tour last year to the festival’s organizers. They also wrote a letter together about faith, family and love, morals they share with the pope. “Growing up, we honored his view which is very open

Pope Francis Is Releasing A Pop-Rock Album In November

Looks like someone answered our prayers.

According to the Rolling Stone, Pope Francis will release a “prog-rock-infused album” called “Wake Up!” in November of this year. The 11-song album is currently available for pre-order on iTunes. Premiering on Nov. 27, 2015, it will feature Pope Francis’ “words and prayers.”

The album is a collaboration between the Pope and Believe Digital, an independent artist distribution company in Europe. According to Don Giulio Neroni, who worked on the album, this is not the first time a Pope has released music.

“I had the honor to work with John Paul II, Benedict XVI and now Pope Francis,” said Neroni in Rolling Stone. “As in the past, for this album too, I tried to be strongly faithful to the pastoral and personality of Pope Francis: the Pope of dialogue, open doors, hospitality.”

Head over to Soundcloud to hear the Pope’s first single, called “Wake Up! Go! Go Forward!” now. Or, buy the single here on iTunes for $ 1.29.

What Pope Francis Must Say to Donald Trump

There is a rising tide of nativism washing over the United States at this particular moment. We have seen such waves recurrently in our history. In the 1840s, it was the Know-Nothings, who hated Catholics and opposed Irish immigration and were even responsible for riots and other acts of violence.

In the 1920’s, it was the turn of the Ku Klux Klan. Even while these hooded terrorists attacked African-Americans in the south, they also campaigned against immigration on racial and religious grounds. The eastern and southern Europeans then entering the country, they maintained, were impossible to assimilate. They were Catholic, they were Jewish, and most of all they were “un-American.” These campaigns succeeded in largely shutting down immigration to the United States for forty years, from the 1920’s to the middle 1960’s.

Today, we are witnessing what is shaping up to be a sorry rerun of this awful history. Anti-immigrant sentiment has been on the rise in political circles for some time. It was on vivid display in Virginia in last year’s Republican congressional primary, when the upstart David Brat unseated Eric Cantor, one of the most powerful men in Congress, on the strength of a thinly-disguised nativist appeal.

The nativism on display today can no longer even be described as “thinly disguised.” It is open, it is blatant, and it is foul. Donald Trump, of course, remains the biggest offender. He has spoken in the kind of blunt, racist language that even the defenders of segregation avoided in the 1960’s. When talking about Mexican migrants, he has used language like “rapists,” and “criminals,” to brand and stereotype and demean an entire group of people. He routinely uses the kind of vulgarities that would have made even George Wallace blush.

Trump’s gutter vulgarity has drawn the Republican field with him. Ben Carson, who was once a world-class neurosurgeon, has more recently called upon the Department of Defense to use drone aircraft to attack “caves” that immigrants use in their passage across the border. And Carson is supported by the so-called Christian right?

And then there is Jeb Bush. Has there ever been a more inept pretender to a throne since Aethelred the Unready? When criticized for his continued use of the term “anchor babies, he explained that he really meant to apply it to “Asian people,” not Hispanics. Good God, what a consummate disaster!

Pope Francis is coming to the United States in just a few weeks. And I devoutly believe that the most urgent task confronting the Pope on his visit is to call the American people away from the poisonous swamp of nativism.

Pope Francis is ideally suited for this task. He has pledged his pontificate to the defense of the marginalized and has made a special concern of his the plight of immigrant peoples. In July, 2013, early in his pontificate, he traveled to the island of Lampedusa, in the Mediterranean, the scene of so many preventable human tragedies. “Immigrants dying at sea, in boats which were vehicles of hope and became vehicles of death.” The Pope fairly wept at the dimensions of the horror he confronted.

Pope Francis’ trip to Lampedusa was meant to remind Christians of the common origin and destiny of all of humankind. “Cain, where is your brother?” God asked. Cain replied, disingenuously, that he was not his brother’s keeper. But, Pope Francis insisted, we are one another’s keepers, in the best sense of that term. We have obligations, transcendent obligations, to one another that are not contained or confined by the mere accidents of political boundaries.

In his speech to the European Parliament, in November, 2014, Pope Francis clothed this scriptural appeal in more philosophical dress. Human dignity is not an individualistic but a communal value. We are not isolated beings, without connections or duties to others. Pope Francis relied on this premise to develop a strong argument on behalf of the common good. And an aspect of the common good, he asserted, is a humane response to immigration.

“The men and women” who arrive “daily on the shores of Europe” require “acceptance and assistance.” Christianity, of course, has a long and deep commitment to a welcoming hospitality, and Pope Francis appealed to this tradition to summon his audience to action. But he also urged them to solve the root causes of the immigration crisis — the poverty and the war that has displaced so many people from their homes and driven them to risk their very beings in a dangerous passage.

I encourage Pope Francis to address the language of coarse hatred that is increasingly becoming de rigeur in American politics. No doubt he is far too sophisticated to call out Donald Trump by name. But Trumpism is an ominous trend that must be denounced. More than anything else, Pope Francis must condemn the rising hatred that he represents and espouses.

Cool Pope and The Boehner

2015-02-09-20150208BeautifulJesusPictureEatingBreadAndDrinkingWineAtHomethumb.jpg

On September 24, Cool Pope will fulfill a life-long dream when he steps in front of and addresses a joint session of Congress. And I must be the only person that finds this to be incredibly wrong and ridiculous. Why are we inviting the Tom Brady of Christianity (Yes, Golden Boy. Best ever. Infallible. Saint.) to speak in front of Congress? I don’t get what the purpose of all of it is.

I swear it says nothing about religion in the Constitution, but I’m not completely certain. Plus, I’m American, so the last time I looked at it was on my 7th grade trip to Washington D.C. So it’s possible I could be missing something in the text. Surely, there has to be something in it like, “We shall fall under the spell of Christ and hence shan’t be associated with anything otherwise,” or something to that effect. So I visited my nearby fair-trade-organic coffee shop to take a look (’cause they put copies of it on their reclaimed timber tables). Lo and behold, NOTHING about the Almighty. Weird, because I remember in Sunday School, Sister Anne telling me that God had handwritten the Declaration of Independence and Jesus was senior editor.

Regardless of the facts — facts sometime muddy the — Cool Pope is still coming, so you best prepare for him. It will be a looooooove fest (But no premarital hanky-panky) with him and Republican leaders. Probably some Democrats, too, actually, who still think it’s a sin to admit they’re actually atheists but don’t want to lose an election.

Usually, for security reasons, we’d never really know what a foreign diplomat, or even the Pope, was going to be doing day to day. But thanks to some annoyed Vatican intern, the Pope’s itinerary for his September trip has leaked online. Doing my part, I included it below. It offers a rare glimpse into the secretive world of the Super-Holy Man, as well as some curious and rather comical hand-written notes on various topics. It actually shows some humanity in the man. There’s even some fancy Latin scribbled at the end, which is always fun to see, like a dog with one of those big head cones.

2015-02-09-ScreenShot3.png

Some fascinating notes there. I typed that Latin sentence into Google Translate and it’s something like, “Remember to bring my Beats headphones.” Such a Cool Pope thing to say. And who knew Pope Francis liked Silicon Valley? Total shock there. The whole HBO thing… I’m empathetic with him on that one. For some reason, HBO is always the issue with cable companies.

Well, what if we give you HBO for two months?

Ah… I ALREADY HAVE HBO. Are you even in my account?

I reached out to The Office of Pope Info on the validity of this leaked itinerary but have yet to hear back.

Pope Francis Marries 20 Couples, Including Some ‘Living In Sin’

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Forty “I do’s” — or “Si” in Italian — were pronounced in St. Peter’s Basilica Sunday as Pope Francis married 20 couples, with one bride already a mother.

Francis in his homily likened families to the “bricks that build society.” Among the couples, all from the Rome area, is one in which the groom’s first marriage was annulled by the church and the bride has a daughter from an earlier relationship. Some of the other couples already were living together.

The Vatican views sex outside marriage as sin, but Francis stresses the church should be a forgiving one.

He said marriage was “real life, not some TV show.” He told the couples love of Jesus can help whenever their love “becomes lost, wounded or worn out.”

Many rank-and-file Catholics have pressed the Vatican to allow divorced faithful who remarry to receive Communion. The Vatican has stood firm, contending only if remarried Catholics forsake sex can they receive Communion. Catholics can only remarry in the Church if their first marriage is annulled, essentially a declaration the initial union never existed.

Some hope a major Vatican meeting next month on family concerns might lead to permission for divorced Catholics who remarry to receive Communion. Francis has reportedly told a woman in his Argentine homeland whose husband’s first marriage wasn’t annulled she was free of sin and should take Communion anyway. The Vatican quickly clarified that the pope’s private conversations don’t reflect church policy.

Sunday’s weddings performed by Francis could also be seen by status-quo defenders as the Vatican’s way of stressing that marriage, because it is a sacrament, should endure. One by one, the 20 couples were called by name by Francis, who asked if they’d be faithful for the rest of their lives.

Pope vs. Pope: World Cup Final Between Argentina And Germany Pits Francis Against Benedict XVI

The FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Germany could herald a rift in the Catholic church, pitting Argentine-born Pope Francis against German Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

Pope Francis has almost surely been secretly rooting for Argentina, despite his pledge to keep his prayers neutral.

But Germany’s unbelievable 7-1 rout of Brazil during yesterday’s semi-final could make for an awkward final match for the Vatican’s holiest football fans.

When Francis first met Benedict XVI in person after his election, he declared, “we are brothers,” but family feuds have started over less.

Francis earlier joked of a “war” between him and his protectors, The Swiss Guards, during the Argentina-Switzerland match. But could we now see a holy war between two Popes?

No word from the Vatican as of press time, but fans are already speculating. The jury’s out on Jesus, however.

TIME Regrets Naming Pope Francis ‘Person Of The Year’ After Beyoncé Drops Surprise Album

Staff at TIME have been left fuming after Beyoncé released a surprise album just days after the magazine chose the Pope as their Person Of The Year.

“I told them we should wait at least a few weeks for any late entries,” one unnamed staffer told HuffPost UK Comedy. “But they wouldn’t listen. Now look what’s happened.”

“Beyoncé unexpectedly dropping a new album is a complete game-changer,” said another. “There’s nothing Pope Francis could have done to beat this… except for releasing an album. And even then, he’d have to better 14 new songs and 17 videos.”

Beyoncé is now expected to be a last-minute entry on at least 500 end-of-year lists, including 2013’s Best Albums and 2013’s Most Overrated Albums.

Murder by the Grace of God: The CIA and Pope John Paul I

Murder by the Grace of God: The CIA and Pope John Paul I

In 1978, driven by Paul VI’s encyclicals Populorum Progressio and Liberation Theology, there were two fronts on which the CIA was confronted by communism as a free democratic society, Italy and Central America. If Italy fell to communism, all of Europe would surely follow. If Central America fell to communism, all of Latin America would surely follow. It was in these parts of the world communism was raising its ugly head as the will of the people that was so very dangerous to the United States and its capitalistic allies. Henry Kissinger sounded the alarm, “Domination by Moscow is not the issue. Communist control of Italy and Central America is the issue. It would have terrible consequences for the United States and is the number one threat to its national security.” ……. On the afternoon of March 13, 1978, fourteen men sat around a table in a sidewalk cafe in a mountain village in northern Italy. In casual clothes they went unnoticed though one was the reigning Pontiff and another Aldo Moro. Included were Italian cardinals who had been behind the rise of the Communist Party in the polls in Italy. The others were cardinals of impoverished parts of the world. Together they comprised the core of the Marxist movement in the Church. They left at four o’clock and Aldo reserved the table for next year….. On March 13, 1979, Cardinals Benelli and Felici decided not to travel to Vittorio Veneto that day. After all, all the others were dead. They, themselves-unaware of their impending doom-were, too, as good as dead.
