Minn. Officer Who Fatally Shot Bride-to-Be Who Called 911 to Report Possible Assault Charged With Murder

The Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot an Australian bride-to-be in 2017 after she called 911 to report a possible assault has turned himself over to authorities after learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman detailed the third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges against Officer Mohamed Noor, a member of the Minneapolis police force for 29 months, in the death of Justine Damond, who was just weeks away from her wedding date.

Damond, a 40-year-old meditation teacher and personal health and life coach, was fatally shot on July 15, 2017, when Officers Matthew Harrity and Noor responded to a 911 call she’d made.

An investigation revealed Damond (who was reportedly wearing her pajamas) approached the driver’s side window of the responding patrol car moments after a loud noise startled Harrity.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Noor, who was sitting in the passenger seat, shot Damond through the open driver’s side window, Freeman said, and told investigators he felt his life was in danger at the time of the shooting.

Freeman said the two officers turned their body cameras on after exiting the vehicle after the shooting. They did not start trying to resuscitate her until “one minute and 10 seconds after” exiting the vehicle, he said.

Freeman said that the first conversations captured on the body cams suggest both officers were apparently “spooked” by something.

But Freeman said that “Justine was approaching the car unarmed” and that both officers “couldn’t tell if she was a male or female, an adult or a child.” Therefore Freeman said “Officer Noor did not act reasonably and abused his authority to use deadly force.”

According to Freeman, Damond told the officers “‘I’m dying’ or ‘I’m dead’” as they approached her.

“In the short time between when Ms. Damond … approached the squad car and the time that he fired the fatal shot, there is no evidence that Officer Noor encountered a threat, appreciated a threat, investigated a threat, or confirmed a threat that justified the decision to use deadly force,” Freeman told reporters, noting Noor “recklessly and intentionally fired his gun.”

She was set to marry her fiancé, Don Damond, in Hawaii in early August; she had already publicly taken his last name.

The medical examiner concluded Damond died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Noor’s lawyer, Thomas Plunkett, could not be reached for comment Tuesday but previously told PEOPLE in a statement that the officer “extends his condolences to and anyone else who has been touched by this event.”

“He takes these events very seriously because, for him, being a police officer is a calling,” Plunkett said.

• For more compelling true crime coverage, follow our Crime magazine on Flipboard.

Both Harrity, who joined the force in 2016, and Noor, were placed on paid leave immediately after the shooting. Their employment status was unclear Tuesday.

PEOPLE was unable to determine if Noor had entered a plea.

He is being held on $ 500,000 bail.

Read Chelsea Clinton’s Heartfelt Letter to Her Kids About Trump and 2016 Election: ‘Progress Is Possible’ But Not ‘Inevitable’

She may have campaigned for her mother in the 2016 election — but Chelsea Clinton was fighting for her children.

The former first daughter wrote an open letter to daughter Charlotte, 3, and son Aiden, 1, for Teen Vogue in which she explains that creating a better world for her children is what most inspired her to travel the country stumping for mom Hillary Clinton — and warning about the dangers of a President Trump.

“The 2016 Election was most of all about you and the world I wanted for you and your generation to grow up in,” Clinton tells her kids. “While your grandmother’s name was on the ballot, for me, it was an election fundamentally about our country’s future, about your future. I am so proud to have campaigned for her — and fought for you.”

And although she was obviously disappointed by the election’s outcome, Clinton says that her “hopes for futures haven’t changed.”

“Everything that motivated me to work so hard for your futures throughout 2016 is still true today. Arguably more so,” she writes.

“What’s once again clear a couple hundred days into President Trump’s administration is that who is elected to office matters — for what is done, what is undone, and who and what are neglected through malice or incompetence,” Clinton continues. “A core lesson of this time in your early lives is that progress is possible, but it is not inevitable. It must be protected and advanced at the ballot box and beyond.”

RELATED VIDEO: Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton Defend Malia Obama’s Right to Privacy

Clinton had more harsh words for Trump in the letter, describing him as “a president who excuses neo-Nazis, who wants to ban members of our military because of who they are and keep out immigrants because of who they worship; that’s personal regard-less of our religion, our gender, or where we’re from … a president who denies science, whether it’s vaccines or climate change or evidence that, yes, health insurance helps save lives.”

“I foolishly used to believe that the political and the personal could be separated; I no longer believe that,” Clinton writes, later adding: “The marked rise in bullying in our schools, with some kids citing President Trump’s words to taunt others? That’s personal … ”

She concludes, “Protecting children isn’t someone else’s job; it’s all our jobs — even if the president doesn’t think it’s his.”

America Ferrera: Representation ‘Is How Most Of Us Learn What Is Possible’

America Ferrera delivered a rousing speech on the importance of representation beyond the media at the Human Rights Campaign’s Los Angeles Gala Dinner on Saturday.

The 32-year-old actress was presented with HRC’s Ally for Equality Award during the ceremony, and in her acceptance speech broke down why it’s important that people of color and in marginalized communities see themselves reflected in culture.

“We know that representation matters. We know this. Not just in the media but in our schools, in our hospitals, in our boardrooms, in our halls of power ― we know that it makes all the difference to see ourselves reflected by culture, with dignity, with humor, with compassion,” Ferrera said in a video of her speech posted Monday.

“It is how most of us learn what is possible for us,” she continued. “What our place in the world is. And too often we have to spend so many years unlearning what culture has taught us about who we are or ought to be; but it doesn’t have to be that way. We can change that. Every single one of us. We can leave the next generation with a better reflection of their innate worth and their inherent power simply by claiming and living in our own power.”

The Human Rights Campaign, the largest advocacy group in the country for LGBTQ rights, honored both Ferrera and Katy Perry during the gala for being allies and using their platform to elevate the voices of those in the LGTBQ community. The singer received a National Equality Award while Ferrera joined actress Meryl Streep and host Seth Meyers in receiving the Ally for Equality Award in 2017.

During her speech, Ferrera also explained how she’s lacked role models in her own path to achieve her dreams.

“I didn’t grow up seeing a lot of examples of short, brown, chubby, poor daughters of immigrant parents grow up to be successful actresses and loud activists,” she said. “I had to use my imagination most of the time.”

The star then thanked the mentors and friends who encouraged her to use her voice, including her high school drama teacher who was in the audience. And she admitted that some days it is “really hard” to be vocal about issues she cares about but feels her own empowerment is connected to the empowerment of other marginalized groups, like the LGBTQ community.

Watch Ferrera’s full speech above. You can hear her comments on representation at the 10:00 mark.

Authorities Investigate Possible Hate Crime After 2 Indian Engineers Shot in Kansas, 1 Fatally

Prosecutors have charged a man with murder and attempted murder after he allegedly opened fire in a crowded bar near Kansas City, killing one man and injuring two others.

Adam Purinton, 51, was charged with one count of premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of premeditated attempted murder after police allege he shot three men at Austin’s Bar and Grill in Olathe, Kansas.

Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, was killed in the shooting. His friend, Alok Madasani, and bystander Ian Grillot were both injured.

During a press conference at the Olathe Police Department headquarters, Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe announced the charges against Purinton. He was joined by representatives from both the FBI and the Olathe police.

In a report picked up by numerous media outlets, a witness told KCTV that Purinton allegedly yelled, “Get out of my country” as he moved toward the victims. While PEOPLE has been unable to verify the eyewitness account, a spokesperson at the Olathe Police Department confirms that they are working with federal authorities to determine whether the shooting was a bias-motivated hate crime.

Additionally, a FBI spokesman says that they are “thoroughly investigating” the incident.

At the time of the incident, bar patrons were watching a University of Kansas basketball game on television. The police report states that Purinton got into an argument with Kuchibhotla and Madasani. Witnesses told KCTV that Purinton allegedly used racial slurs during the confrontation.

According to the report, Purinton allegedly left the bar and returned with a firearm. Police allege that he shot both men. When Ian Grillot stepped in, he was allegedly shot, as well.

Police allege Purinton fled on foot. Later, he allegedly entered an Applebees and allegedly told the bartender that he had been involved in a shooting.

Grillot was shot by one bullet that went through his hand and into his chest. In a video released by the University of Kansas Health System, Grillot said that he was lucky to be alive, and downplayed any indication that his involvement was heroic.

“I was just doing what anyone would have done,” he said. “It’s not about where he was from or his ethnicity, we are all humans, so I felt what was naturally right to do.”

Pick up PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: Cases That Shocked America, on sale now, for the latest on Casey Anthony, JonBenét Ramsey and more.

Purinton is being held on $ 2 million bond. It is unclear if he has an attorney. He has yet to enter a plea.

Authorities are still investigating the incident to determine their next steps.

“This was a violent crime,” FBI special agent Eric Jackson told reporters in a press conference on Thursday. “We want the community to know that we’re looking to make sure that the individual involved in this is held accountable for his actions.”

Agent Provocateur Seeks New Investor, Possible Sale

ON THE PROWL: Less than two years after shelving plans to sell Agent Provocateur following a strategic review, 3i is again on the hunt for an investor — or an outright buyer — for the luxury lingerie brand, which has fallen on hard times.
According to industry sources, 3i has begun talking to potential investors, including trade buyers, high-net-worth individuals and sovereign wealth funds, to help breathe new life into the brand, which expanded its worldwide retail network just as luxury sales began to slow and big-spenders — including Russians — stopped traveling.
As reported in November, Agent Provocateur plans to shutter 30 percent of its retail network, reduce headcount at its headquarters by 30 percent and phase down its diffusion line, L’Agent, which is designed by sisters Penélope Cruz and Mónica Cruz Sánchez.

Rihanna Designs a Pair of Fur-Trimmed Sandals That May Only Be Possible for Rihanna to Wear This Summer

When it comes to Rihanna‘s style, the only person who can pull off the singer’s uniquely eclectic assortment of accessories and ensembles is, well, RiRi herself. But don’t let that stop you from trying. Specifically, this summer, at the beach, in a pair of fur-trimmed Fentys.

Rihanna Fenty puma slidesCourtesy PUMA by RIHANNA Collection

For her third Fenty by Puma release, Rihanna’s going for the exposed toes with a pair of super-luxe, faux-fur trimmed shower shoes, that pose a styling problem for those of us who are not Rih.

In a statement, the footwear experts over at Puma claim the shoe “is great to rock with socks or without, for the poolside or hanging around the city.” But if we’re being honest (and we always are), the beach nor the poolside seem like the most obvious locales to sport a satin foam and fluffy-topped “sandal” — let alone into the shower, where this sandal style originated.

You, too, can sport the furry shower shoe, which comes in black, white and shell colorways, for $ 80 beginning April 22. The only question is, what will you pair them with? (No, seriously, we’re open to suggestions.)

Film Review: The Impossible Is, Well, Not Quite Yet Possible

Polaroid has always been a bit of a legend and a bit of a mystery to me. I grew up in the 80s, so Polaroid was pop culture, although less and less so as I came of age. By the time I became a “photographer” Polaroids were no longer really in use, even though the Polaroid Corporation continued to make various films into the late 2000s. Finally, by 2008 or so, it had completely vanished.

Enter the Impossible Project, a Dutch company that bought the old Polaroid factory along with their patents etc. Soon Polaroid film – and therefore Polaroid cameras – would be up and working again. However, not all would be the same.

Given my lifelong curiosity with Polaroid cameras, I recently decided to dive in. I contacted the good people at The Impossible Project and we hashed out a deal for them to sponsor a project. Soon after they sent me a really nice refurbished SX-70 along with a hefty supply of film. Thanks be to The Impossible Project and their wonderful employees!

I really wanted to like their film. I really wanted to fall in love with the SX-70, one of the most romantic cameras of all time. I imagined myself roaming the streets of New York, SX-70 slung over my shoulder, making some of my greatest photographs to date. Alas, none of this would come to pass.

Here’s the short version of the story: Impossible film is just not stable enough (yet!) to be really useful. I hate to say it, but that seems to be the truth of the matter.

I tried the SX-70 indoors with ample light, but to no avail. Here’s Matthew in a failed attempt at a brightly lit portrait.

Next, I tried the B&W film outdoors. Better success. Here’s Granamyr’s claw. But things were still difficult. Sunlight and heat would be major obstacles to overcome in New York in July. The film doesn’t like weather that is too hot, or too cold. It also doesn’t like too much light in those first few seconds after exposure.

I installed the frog tongue, after a lot of frustration (poor directions, no visuals), and things again improved some. Here are a few more attempts at outdoor photography with color and black and white film.

In this next shot, the brick wall was a vibrant yellow. As you can see the film did not pick up the color well at all. In the following shot, a red and white wall is similarly washed out, although the photo is my favorite of all of them. It’s artsy and abstract and fun! This is perhaps were the gem lies in Impossible film – in the experimentation and fun.

This next image shows the lack of detail in the image, despite having the focus sharp at the time of capture.

The Impossible Project has been around for some time now. I think it is safe to say the “novelty” of it all has worn away. People still using this film are likely genuinely interested in instant film and not merely the “idea” of it. Having said this, this is where we are now with getting the Polaroid image back into pop culture. We kinda, sorta, more or less have it, but not quite. The images are just not we used to know as a “Polaroid photograph”. In their defense, the team at Impossible tells me that Holland (where their factory is located) has restricted the use of many chemicals on environmental grounds. This is great for the environment, but poor for the film quality. Yet, at least they are trying to get things going again and still remain environmentally friendly. Fujifilm Instax film on the other hand is likely using much more harmful chemicals to achieve their superior results. This is all worth noting, as is the general observation that analog film, in general terms, is not all that congruent with environmental movements.

In the end, I have to say there is indeed something magical about using a Polaroid camera, about the SX-70 especially. The decisive clunk of the shutter button, the whirl of the gears and the spitting out of a real piece of photographic history. It’s all very exciting. The disappointment comes in terms of the quality of the image. The film just doesn’t resolve enough detail to really be useful for serious photography and, at just over $ 3 a shot, it’s an expensive hobby. Despite this, The Impossible Project says they sold over 1 million packs of film last year and things are on the rise. They also tell me that there is a new generation of film being beta tested as I write this post. That’s exciting because I would really like to see the Impossible become, well, more possible. The very real and wonderful people behind this project are trying to do a good thing for photography, but they may have a steep hill yet to climb. Regardless, I’m not giving up on the SX-70 or The Impossible Project just yet.

Bottom Line: I can wholeheartedly recommend Impossible film for personal fun and/or experimental use, but cannot recommend it (at this time) for anything serious or professional. It’s a mixed bag verdict.

Harry Potter might want to keep away from the latest edition of The Quibbler.

Following a recent Instagram post, the online speculation is that Harry’s dad, James Potter, aka actor Robbie Jarvis, may be dating Luna Lovegood, aka actress Evanna Lynch. And if Harry’s childhood wasn’t ruined before, it definitely is now:

That photo isn’t all, though. Despite the fact that E! wasn’t given conformation from Jarvis’ reps that the two were dating, other cute photos just seem to add to the evidence. Take this one for example:

And check out this one where they apparently took Polyjuice Potion and transformed into owls. Nice try, James and Luna, but we know it’s you:

So why is this such a big deal? OK, first, let’s skip past the fact that in “Harry Potter,” Luna came in during Ginny’s year and is younger than Harry. Just forget that. But didn’t Harry also take Luna to Professor Slughorn’s Christmas party? Now his dad might be taking her out? Oh, and what about Lily Potter, James? What about Lily?

Voldemort has done some pretty messed up things to Harry Potter before, but this might be crossing the line.

That being said, we wish all the happiness in the world to the potential couple because they are just actors and Harry Potter isn’t real. Or that’s what people want you to believe, anyway.

Representatives for the actors did not immediately respond to The Huffington Post’s requests for comment.

5 Possible Choices for Hillary’s Running Mate

One thing we know for certain is that it won’t be a quasi-Republican, weak-kneed, moderate Democrat. Unless Mitt Romney comes riding in on a white horse at the last minute, and becomes a formidable opponent, she won’t need to kiss up to moderate Republicans. Polls show her doing remarkably well against anyone already mentioned, including Jeb Bush.

Another thing we know is that it won’t be Joe Biden. While it’s possible he’d accept a position in Hillary’s cabinet (Secretary of State or Defense) he’s already done his time. Although the job has been depicted, historically, as thankless and puerile, Biden seemed to thrive in the position. No shrinking violet, it gave him the public platform he coveted. Still, it’s a case of “Been there, done that.”

Here are five choices in descending order of probability.

If Warren is looking for a podium from which to preach her long-needed, anti-Wall Street reform philosophy, here’s a question: Which will get her more attention–the U.S. Senate, where she’s one of 100, or the Vice-Presidency of the United States? Hillary personally likes Liz and would love to turn her loose, allowing her to say all the things that she, as president, probably can’t say.

The obvious downside would be inducing people to vote for two women. Hillary would be our first female president, but ushering in the first woman vice-president on the same ticket might be too much to ask of the non-progressives. On the other hand, for women voters still on the fence, a Sorority Sister ticket might just be enough to sway them.

He’s smart, ambitious, antsy, regretful at not having made more of his earlier (2004) opportunity, and eager to mount another appearance on the national stage. Both he and Hillary come off as preternaturally intelligent, but what she lacks in old-fashioned likeability and trustworthiness, Dean possesses in spades. He’s also an M.D., a family doctor. It would be a great pairing.

Like Howard Dean, another Vermonter, and my personal favorite. But unlike Dean, he’s a wise and savvy prairie socialist who would give the ticket the necessary “leftwing heft” it requires. His place on the ticket might encourage hope-to-die McGovernites and Ramsey Clark loyalists to vote for a “hawk” like Hillary.

Although Sanders will be 75 years old come election day in 2016, he is physically and mentally fit. Indeed, even at his advanced years, he is arguably mentally sharper than Rick Perry was when he was a fraternity pledge at Texas A&M.

Former Mayor of Los Angeles, and perennial political wannabe. His virtues: He’s likeable, he’s Latino, he’s articulate, he’s wildly ambitious, and he’s just humble and clueless enough to interpret being added to the ticket in order to secure the Latino vote as a “compliment.” Also, anyone who failed the bar exam four times can’t be all bad.

A bloodless coup. Hillary becomes president. Bill becomes vice-president. Hillary suddenly resigns. Bill becomes president. He vows to accomplish in his third term what he couldn’t finish during his first two. Ken Starr beware. Payback is a bitch.

Granada Defender Fails To Block Goal In Worst Possible Way

Real Madrid trounced Granada CF on Sunday with a final score of 9-1.

But as this Vine painfully illustrates, it wasn’t for a lack of effort, as one Granada defender left it all on the field — and then some — while failing to block the first goal of the game, scored by Gareth Bale:

Following Bale’s game-opening score, Cristiano Ronaldo proceeded to score five goals of his own, three of which he scored in a period of just eight minutes.

Justice Department Probes Possible Price-Fixing In Music Publishing

July 15 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating possible pricing coordination among music publishing companies as it reviews the decades-old rules that govern the cost of licensing songs, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Justice Department has sent out requests for documents from Sony Corp’s Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Publishing, along with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music Inc (BMI), the Journal said.

The DoJ is seeking materials related to a wide range of licensing issues, including the two publishers’ efforts to withdraw their rights from ASCAP and BMI’s licensing agreements with Internet radio company Pandora Media Inc, the newspaper said, citing the people. (

The request, formally known as civil investigative demands, are part of the DoJ’s sweeping review of its rate-setting agreements with ASCAP and BMI, the Journal said.

ASCAP, BMI, Universal Music and Sony/ATV did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

Last month, the DoJ said it was considering changing or scrapping agreements it reached with two music licensing giants more than 70 years ago to freshen them up for the Internet age.

Any dispute over the cost of a license goes to “rate courts,” which are based in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Songwriters use music publishers to promote their works, and to do certain licensing tasks – for example, the licensing of “mechanical” rights, for the sale and distribution of recordings.

Publishers use BMI and ASCAP, both not-for-profit entities, to collectively license works for public performance to major music users like Pandora Media. (Reporting by Supriya Kurane in Bangalore; Editing by Gopakumar Warrier)

Sonic Possible Worlds: Hearing the Continuum of Sound

Sonic Possible Worlds: Hearing the Continuum of Sound

Inspired by its use in literary theory, film criticism and the discourse of games design, Salome Voegelin’s dazzling new book adapts and develops possible world theory in relation to sound. David Lewis’ Possible World is juxtaposed with Merleau-Ponty’s life-world, to produce a meeting of the semantic and the phenomenological at the place of listening. The central tenet of this book is that at present traditional musical compositions and contemporary sonic output are approached and investigated through separate and distinct critical languages and histories. As a consequence, no continuous and comparative study of the field – as exists in literary studies for example – is possible. Voegelin proposes an analytical framework that can access and investigate works across genres and times, and study them within a comparative context. As the discipline of sound studies gains momentum, Sonic Possible Worlds fills a need for a discourse of sound to contextualize and debate emerging sonic practices.
