John McCain to Posthumously Receive Father of the Year Award

The National Father’s Day Council will honor the late Sen. John McCain at its annual awards next month.
McCain, who died of brain cancer in August 2018, will receive a Father of the Year award on June 13 at noon at the group’s luncheon at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel. Also to be honored at the event will be Tom Kingsbury, president, chief executive officer and chairman of Burlington Stores Inc.
The son and grandson of Navy Admirals, McCain served as a naval aviator for 22 years following his 1958 graduation from the Naval Academy. While on his 23rd mission over North Vietnam, his plane was struck by a missile, forcing him to eject, which resulted in him breaking both arms and one leg. McCain then spent years as a prisoner of war in Hanoi, where he was subjected to torture and denied medical treatment.
Following his release, McCain served as a naval liaison to the Senate. He retired from the Navy in 1981 with naval honors including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross.
