First Lady Melania Trump Delivers Anti-Vaping Remarks Wearing Prada

In helping to kick off the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Red Ribbon Rally, First Lady Melania Trump called for the end of marketing e-cigarettes and vaping to minors.
During her remarks this morning in Washington, D.C., FLOTUS said, “We need to continue encouraging teenagers and young adults that have fallen into drug addiction to be brave enough to admit it, to talk about it and to get help. This also includes addiction associated with e-cigarettes and vaping. It is important to me that we all work to educate children and families about the dangers associated with this habit. Marketing this addictive product to children must stop,” according to a transcript of her remarks.
Wearing a black sleeveless Prada dress, Trump was the first first lady to visit DEA’s headquarters. Monday’s message may have been about anti-drugs, but her attire hinted at sustainability. FLOTUS wore the same all-business sheath for a Sept. 23 visit to the New York Stock Exchange to ring the opening bell with students from the United Nations International School. A pool report noted that the first lady did not wear a red ribbon today and that an East Wing staffer said FLOTUS had not received one in advance of the

Nicole Kidman, Regina King Attend Their First Prada Show

PRADA’S BFF: Despite being a self-professed fan of Miuccia Prada, Nicole Kidman attended the designer’s show for the first time on Wednesday. “I’ve been friends with Miuccia, for [pause, smiling] well, for many, many years, over 20 years, but this is my first show. I love her and I love supporting her.” Kidman said she was also eager to see the exhibition curated by Wes Anderson and staged at the Fondazione Prada, “Spitzmaus Mummy in a Coffin and Other Treasures.” “I am going to try and stay here for a couple of days and then take a little break on holiday. I’m excited to see Milan, when I was here before it was literally for a couple of hours. So there’s a bit of glamour and then a little bit of rest and relaxation,” Kidman said.
Similarly, Regina King said she has a new role: tourist. The actress visited Florence for a few days before coming to Milan. “I actually started my trip in Firenze, and walked until my feet hurt and ate a lot, too. It was sneakers all the way.” Upcoming projects include an HBO series that’s about to be released called “Watchmen,” and her feature film directorial debut.

Prada Resort 2020

“Simplicity is rebellion.”
So said Miuccia Prada during a preview of the resort collection she showed on Thursday night. Prada referred specifically to the clothes, which she described as “naïve, cotton, simple,” but the thought extended to the event itself. At a moment when, in the luxury sweepstakes for sales and social media attention, her primary competition rents out major world monuments and airline terminals, Prada preferred to show at home. Or at one of her homes. In this case, her brand’s New York headquarters on 52nd Street overlooking the Hudson River. “I like to do the shows in my own spaces,” she said.
Yet while Prada may reject (for now at least) the kind of extravagant wanderlust of her competitors, this was no quiet little soiree. A star-studded guest list including Elle Fanning, Shailene Woodley, Uma Thurman, Naomi Watts, Joel Edgerton, Anderson Paak, Hailee Steinfeld, Marc Jacobs, Char Defrancesco and Sofia Coppola turned out, many reveling through four stages of festivities: boisterous pre-show cocktail, show, post-show informal dinner, after party.
Simple in its open concept and egalitarian flow — OK. Low-key — definitely not, offering an Instagrammable someone or something at every turn. Within that framework, Prada presented a lineup she characterized as simple

Christian Siriano Pulls Gowns From Collection After Diet Prada Callout

After being called out for plagiarism by Diet Prada, Christian Siriano is pulling two gowns from his recent fall 2019 show.
On Monday, the fashion watchdog posted a series of images to its Instagram account showing side-by-side comparisons of gowns from Siriano’s show, which he presented on Saturday, to gowns from Maison Valentino’s spring 2018 couture show.

Siriano was quick to respond to Diet Prada, commenting on the post: “Yea wow last time I have this designer in my studio make a dress. Agree, it’s pulled.”

Christian Siriano’s response to Diet Prada’s accusations.

Diet Prada called out two looks from Siriano’s collection: a billowy blue gown and a short purple dress with ruffle accents. The account compared the blue gown to a pink version from Valentino that had a similar billowy silhouette and compared Siriano’s purple dress to a floor-length version of a similar shade by Valentino.
In a comment issued to WWD, Siriano said: “I don’t look at collections, so I had no idea what they were even referencing, but yes I agree it looks very similar. I wish I could control and make every single dress myself that we put out there, but it’s not physically possible.”
Siriano has always been praised for his

Front Row at Prada Men’s Fall 2019

PRADA’S BRITS: British actor Callum Turner took in his first Prada show, although he said he had been to Milan a few times. “I love Milan and managed to see friends in a short amount of time,” he said, adding a few Italian words. Coming up for Turner are a BBC “conspiracy thriller” and his role as Frank Churchill in a new rendition of “Emma,” opposite Anya Taylor-Joy playing the titular heroine. “We need more Emma,” he joked about the latest cinematic version of the Jane Austen novel. Filming “in and around England” will start in May, directed by this “really cool American photographer and director Autumn de Wilde, who did Beck’s album and lots of iconic rock ‘n’ roll photos.”
British actor Will Poulter said he was in Milan just for the Prada show, although he did manage to squeeze in one Italian meal. “Yeah, we went to Pizza Express,” joked Turner, who was sitting nearby. The Brits never leave their sense of humor behind, do they? Poulter is currently playing Colin, a computer programmer, in “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” on Netflix and will star in “Midsommar,” a film about a summer holiday gone wrong, which is due for release later this year.

Criticized for Charms That Evoke Blackface, Prada Says It ‘Abhors Racist Imagery’

Facing online accusations that animal-like figurines and charms in its stores and windows evoke blackface, Prada Group issued a statement saying it “abhors racist imagery” and vowed to withdraw them from “display and circulation.”
In a Facebook post, Chinyere Ezie, a civil rights lawyer, said the sight of the figurines in the Italian brand’s store in New York’s SoHo district had her “shaking with anger,” describing “racist and denigrating #blackface imagery” and “Sambo like imagery.”

Ezie noted she had just returned from a visit to the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, taking in an exhibit on blackface.
“History cannot continue to repeat itself. Black America deserves better. And we demand better,” she wrote in her post, which got picked up by other blogs. “Shame on you Prada.”

In a statement to WWD, Prada said the figures are “fantasy charms composed of elements of the Prada oeuvre” and known as Pradamalia.
“They are imaginary creatures not intended to have any reference to the real world and certainly not blackface. Prada Group never had the intention of offending anyone and we abhor all forms of racism and racist imagery. In this interest we will withdraw the characters in question from display and circulation,” it

Pamela Anderson Writes a Letter to Appeal to Miuccia Prada to Stop Using Fur

ACTING OUT AGAINST FUR: Animal rights activists have recruited actress Pamela Anderson to lobby Prada to go fur free.
Her support is being tagged onto an international effort against Prada Group that was started earlier this month and led by Fur Free Alliance. For what appears to be more of a personal appeal, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has enlisted Anderson. The “Baywatch” actress has penned a letter to Miuccia Prada that was sent today, according to a PETA spokeswoman.
Anderson wrote, “I have long admired your creativity — and Prada’s timeless nylon bag — but I was disappointed to learn from my friends at PETA that instead of going fur-free, Prada has chosen merely to reduce the amount of animal pelts that it sells. A ‘ gradual’ reduction is no consolation to animals who are languishing inside tiny cages on fur farms and being anally electrocuted and skinned alive for their fur right now. Please, I urge you to drop fur immediately.”
In response to this month’s global effort, Prada executives responded by noting how PETA had been informed that Prada has committed “to a gradual and concrete reduction in the marketing of these products which, to date, represent less

Prada Men’s Spring 2019

Prada’s been splashing the euros: Earlier this month it opened a whizz-bang new industrial complex in Tuscany — and more are on the way — so the brand has got to sell, sell, sell. The collection that Miuccia Prada showed Sunday evening underlined that: The clothes may have been connected in spirit to the women’s resort, but this collection was more about commerce than anything else.
Prada said she was seeking a “more elegant” style for her man, something youthful yet discreet, adding that she’s fed up with baggy sportswear and streetwear. “The silhouette is very lean, clean and elegant,” she said before the show. “I’ve put a lot of different pieces together — serious ones, fun ones, all sorts — but the goal was to construct, to define a youthful, contemporary elegance. They’re simple pieces, and I wanted them to make sense.”
She took a similar tack with the accessories, which ranged from nylon sacks with drawstring ties to big leather weekenders and smaller shoulder bags. Models held them with an iron grip over one shoulder as if to say, “No one’s snatching this Prada, baby,” as they walked past guests who were perched on big, transparent inflatable cubes, a special reedition of

Prada Launches ‘Nylon Farm’ Video Project

NYLON PROTOCOL: Prada has launched a video project in four episodes focusing on its signature nylon fabric.
Dubbed “Nylon Farm” and filmed at the company’s industrial headquarters in Valvigna, Tuscany, the story aims to convey the brand’s blend of heritage, technological innovation and creativity through a futuristic fairy tale.
In the short videos, the Prada farm is populated with flocks of cyborg “nylon sheep” — a nod to science fiction and American writer Philip K. Dick. The sheep’s synthetic fleece is harvested via an alternate reality technology and woven into Prada’s signature nylon under the supervision of futuristic IT systems.

Prada Resort 2019

After a fashion show, a critic typically rushes from the venue back to office, home, hotel, wherever, and writes as carefully considered a review as deadline — usually right now — permits.
Following Miuccia Prada’s cruise show last night, I ignored that deep-rooted conditioning to actually enjoy, rather than fret through, the post-show fete (Tonne Goodman — a delightful dinner companion), and went home to bed after what I thought was quite a strong show. A night’s sleep and some morning rumination told me I was wrong. Prada’s show wasn’t merely strong. It was brilliant.
Not deep-thoughts, esoteric brilliant, but aggressively commercial, resort-long-selling-season-give-me-a-smart-coat-and-pants brilliant. “It’s like a fantasy and the reality,” Prada said, describing her motif du jour. “Of course, [a show is] always a fantasy. It’s my fantasy on what today for me is real.”
A longtime holdout from the cruise extravaganza, Prada acknowledged that market realities ultimately forced her hand. “Everybody is doing more, and so you have to adapt, more or less,” she said.
So after years of sprinkling women’s cruise looks into her June men’s show, last year she staged a full resort show in Milan. This time she opted for another of her brand’s “homes,” its Herzog &

Joe Alwyn Attends Prada Men’s Fall 2018 Show

PUT YOUR HAT ON: On the men’s fall runway, Miuccia Prada chose to identify the models wearing or carrying the four unique items created by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic, Herzog & de Meuron and Rem Koolhaas with a bright yellow nylon bucket hat. The use of nylon was the only brief the creative talents received to design their pieces, said Grcic, as part of the “Prada Invites” project.  “I was thinking of making a bag that you wear, and the first reference was a fishing net with pockets, but it became a more abstract interpretation and then an apron with many pockets,” said Grcic, whose studio is based in Munich. While the item was conceived in “one day and a half” before Christmas, Grcic said that he “knew [Prada’s] professional team could swing this. In all projects in collaboration with expert craftsmen or engineers, a project can be propelled onto another level.”
Ronan Bouroullec opined that Prada for this project was looking for “fresh blood from outside the fashion culture, and most virgin [at fashion].” Like Grcic, he said he felt entirely free to experiment and that, given the speed at which the item was developed, “it felt sort

‘Prada Silver Line’ Retail Project Presented in Macau

PRADA TRAIN TRIP: Prada is hopping on a train this holiday season.
The brand unveiled an itinerant retail project in Macau’s Galaxy shopping mall on Dec. 15, named “Prada Silver Line,” installed until Jan. 14.
To mark the project, the brand delivered a range of products, including women’s bags and accessories, exclusively available at the Macau destination. In particular, the Prada Cahier bag is reinterpreted in three new styles made of exotic leathers.
A different selection of items will be developed for each future city of the itinerant retail space.
The pop-up re-creates an illuminated train platform reminiscent of those of the American Streamliners — the high-speed railway train sets of the Thirties to Fifties.
The imaginary railway station includes a train’s coach with a metal outer shell, which houses the products’ main display space. Floral-patterned red silk brocade tapestry and black-and-white marble checkered flooring, which appears in all the brand’s boutiques, embellish the space.

Around and outside the train’s coach, a series of installations including life-size Prada robots and a ticket booth — which serves as a concierge service’s booth delivering purchases to customers’ homes — complete the setting.

Prada Unveils Restored Mansion in Shanghai

SHANGHAI — The Prada Group has unveiled its latest restoration project: Rong Zhai is a restored mansion in downtown Shanghai, which will be used as a multipurpose brand and cultural space.
As well as reshowing Prada’s resort 2018 collection and inviting a select group of influencers and celebrities — including director Baz Luhrmann, actress Zhang Ziyi, model Liu Wen and artist Cao Fei — for an intimate dinner at the mansion on Wednesday, the doors of Rong Zhai were thrown open to 1,000 guests for a cocktail party on Saturday night.
The evening included a performance by actor and musician Ansel Elgort, the face of Prada L’Homme fragrance, and among the guests were Du Juan and Alexander Wang.
The unveiling of Rong Zhai — the name translates to “Rong House” — comes following a six-year renovation. Miuccia Prada and her husband Patrizio Bertelli, chief executive officer of the Milan-based group, are not new to such initiatives of preservation. They have supported the restoration of Milan’s 19th-century luxury shopping arcade Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and Palazzo Ca’ Corner della Regina, an opulent Baroque palace on the Grand Canal in Venice that was reconfigured as an art space for Fondazione Prada.

Prada to Set Up Pop-ups in Galeries Lafayette

POP-UP IN PARIS: Prada will take over the window displays of Galeries Lafayette at the end of the month, while setting up two pop-up stores on the ground floor of the Paris department store, one for men and another for women.
From July 31 to Aug. 20, Prada will plaster the eleven windows lining the French capital’s Boulevard Haussmann with posters illustrating the fashion brand’s vision of women, with messages such as “soft touch” and “the rise of romance.”
The posters will also cover the facade of the store. A window on a perpendicular street will be dedicated to Prada perfume, and the skybridge between the store’s two main buildings will be decorated with a giant version of the brand’s Trick Robots.
The displays will reflect the brand’s fall 2017 collection and use wood paneling and contrasting colors to divide the spaces.

The men’s pop-up store, which will feature pieces from the ready-to-wear collection as well as accessories, will be made from an open, boxlike structure with a black-and-white checked floor.

Prada Group Hosts First Conference on Sustainability and Innovation

MILAN — The Prada Group held its first conference on sustainability, called “Shaping a Creative Future,” in partnership with Yale School of Management and Politecnico di Milano School of Management.
The two-day event was held at Fondazione Prada on the first day on Monday, and at the brand’s headquarters in Milan, where the show is held, the second day.
Focusing on the relation between sustainability and innovation, the conference was made up of conversations, debates and discussions with leading international academic, creative and business figures, moderated by the two universities.
The first day saw representatives from leading businesses meet with Yale School of Management and Politecnico di Milano School of Management professors and alumni for discussions on sustainability and innovation.
The discussions over the two days hinged on brand heritage and market value; design for sustainability through innovation and tradition; sustainability and value creation, and driving creative excellence.
“One of the universal fundamental virtues is creativity,” said Prada chairman Carlo Mazzi. “Positive creativity requires equality and liberty, and we need courage and a strong mind. Where creativity is focused on the good and beauty [there] is also sustainability.”
The first speech centered on brand heritage and market value and Yale Professor Ravi Dhar explained how “products are more

Prada: The Most Memorable Show Sets

An innovator at heart, Miuccia Prada constantly delivers evocative show sets when presenting her collections.
For her men’s fall 2015 show, models filed briskly through a series of rooms wallpapered with vein-y marble, with the low ceilings, floors and corridors clad in aluminum plates.
For the spring 2015 women’s show, the Milanese designer created a mix of bleak desert and outer-space chic, featuring huge purple sand dunes fading into a brownish carpet.
Always combining fashion and art, for the men’s fall 2014 show Prada constructed a multitiered platform of steel and dark felt, ringed by metal scaffolding — the idea being to evoke a theater setting — underscored by musical excerpts from Pina Bausch dance performances. The soundtrack lurched between Nina Hagen, German music from the Thirties and live jazz.
For her spring 2014 women’s outing, Prada put together a majestic show inspired by German avant-garde culture: musicians played live excerpts from Kurt Weill and while Barbara Sukowa, who starred as the chanteuse-prostitute in Rainer-Werner Fassbinder’s “Lola,” crooned on the soundtrack. The set was an austere gray industrial stage surrounded by metal scaffolding.

Fondazione Prada Screens Iñarritu’s Film Selection

MILAN — Fondazione Prada in Milan is holding a film festival called “Flesh, Mind and Spirit,” a selection of 15 movies chosen by director Alejandro González Iñárritu and film critic Elvis Mitchell, running through Feb.1. Each film is assigned to a category distinguished by a keyword. Flesh features in “Fists in the Pocket, and “Aguirre, the Wrath of God,” while mind is seen in “I am Cuba,” “Last Year at Marienbad” and “You, the Living.” Spirit movies include “Mother and Son” and “Silent Night.”
“Despite this extremely eclectic selection, there is a common factor: these films are all experiences full of emotion,” said Iñárritu, who was just nominated for an Academy Award as best director for “The Revenant.” “All of them provoked in me appetites that I never knew I had.”
The selection will be screened free of charge at Fondazione Prada’s Cinema every day, expect Tuesdays. Advance booking is required.

Prada Drops Out of America’s Cup

MILAN — Luna Rossa wants out.
Prada’s sailing team said Thursday it will no longer be taking part in the 35th America’s Cup, withdrawing from the competition in disaccord with new regulations voted by organizers. Citing “serious implications” determined by the overturning of rules unanimously adopted by the teams in force since June 2014, principal Patrizio Bertelli thanked his team for the work done during the past year, underscoring that its efforts have been “frustrated by this maneuver that is unprecedented in the history of the America’s Cup.”
“However, in sports, as in life, one cannot always go for compromise, after compromise, after compromise; sometimes it is necessary to make decisions that are painful but must be clear cut, as only these can make everybody aware of the drifts of the system and therefore set the basis for the future: respect of legality and sportsmanship.”
Lamenting “a lack of credibility and uncertain technical grounds for what should instead be the most sophisticated sailing competition in the world,” the team also highlighted “a waste of important resources already invested based on the rules that were sanctioned in June last year.”
The Luna Rossa team was working in Sardinia to set up the new boat for

Prada has brought its Luna Rossa AC72 catamaran to Milan.
The 72-foot sailboat, which was among the finalists of the America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2013, has been installed in the Aero-Naval hall of Milan’s Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia (The Science and Technology Museum).
The catamaran, which was transported from Cagliari, Sardinia, and then re-assembled in the museum, will be on public display until at least the end of 2017.
“The presence of Luna Rossa in the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia represents a recognition of Luna Rossa team’s technical and design value and of its continuous ability to compete in this sector at the highest levels for more than 15 years,” said Luna Rossa team principal Patrizio Bertelli. “This boat has been one of the most extreme expressions in the history of naval design: half boat, half plane, it made sailing lovers and especially its team live exciting moments. We are more than happy to put this expression of the Italian design value at the disposal of the public, especially young people.”
Over the next few months, an interactive exhibition will be organized at the museum to explain the catamaran’s design and construction process, as well as to
