Pippa Middleton Proves She’s Not Afraid Of Heights On Her Honeymoon

One honeymoon location just isn’t enough for Pippa Middleton and her new husband, James Matthews.

The two jetted off to Tetiaroa, French Polynesia ― one of Obama’s recent vacation spots ― after their wedding last weekend. Apparently they’ve had their fill of South Pacific sun, as Middleton and Matthews were recently spotted in Sydney, Australia.

On Wednesday, Middleton and her hubby climbed the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge at night. The bridge offers 360-degree views of Sydney and stands about 440 feet in the air.

The night climb costs around $ 253 – $ 388 for adults and can take up to 3.5 hours to complete.

The couple is staying at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Sydney, which offers views of the Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House, according to a press release.

So far, they’ve explored the city by way of a water taxi and a sea plane. The two recently flew a seaplane to lunch at the Cottage Point Inn, which looks like a cute spot for the newlyweds:

Jon Stewart Proves Ridiculous Interviews Over The Years Were Real

Clear your schedule. You’re going to need a lot more than one moment of zen after this.

Jon Stewart says that a big question “The Daily Show” gets asked is, “Are the interviews they do real?” The show constantly seems to have ridiculous people who share polarizing views like denouncing the notion that President Obama is the Antichrist only because he is, in fact, the second coming of Hitler. You know, stuff like that.

Surely, these can’t be serious, right?

Well, unfortunately …

Image: Tumblr

In order to prove the show didn’t distort peoples’ views, Stewart had Jessica Williams take a camera crew to contact past interviewees. And it looks like they’re still as ridiculous as ever.

The good news is at least person doesn’t think the president is the second coming of Hitler anymore. Now, he thinks he’s the son of Satan — which is pretty much back to the Antichrist theory again. So at least it’s nice everything is coming full circle.

Jon Stewart’s final “Daily Show” as host will air Thursday night, Aug. 6 at 11:00 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.

Hospital’s ‘Laugh Cafe’ For Seniors Proves That Laughter Is The Best Medicine

Need a good laugh? Washington’s Sibley Memorial Hospital has you covered with their “Laugh Cafe.”

A part of the Sibley Senior Association, which was launched in 1987, Sibley’s Laugh Cafe is exactly what it sounds like — a room next to the hospital cafeteria where senior citizens go to tell jokes and laugh.

The Laugh Cafe opened in August of 2012, and it holds monthly, hour-long laugh sessions. There’s a one-time forty dollar fee to join, and from there the price of admission is a joke. Although the program is primarily for seniors, patients and family members are also invited to join.

“I had heard about the health benefits of laughter yoga so I informally surveyed my favorite jokester members,” Senior Association director Marti Bailey told The Huffington Post. “The overwhelming reaction was that they wanted a reason to laugh and rejected laughter simply for laughter’s sake.”

Sibley’s Laugh Cafe was born from this idea, and it continues to be a popular program among hospital residents. Bailey said that although most members arrive with pretty tame jokes, they can get a bit “racy.”

“People often ask if the jokes are censored or if there is a standard for what kind of joke might be acceptable. I respond that the members are all adults and as a club have elected to be self-governing and open about the types of jokes offered,” she explained.

“So far members have provided jokes that are generally clean, sometimes word play that produce audible groans, and sometimes a little ‘racy’ or edgy. Everyone has a different sense of humor. All have laughed and none have complained. And people keep coming back.”

There’s a reason laughing makes these seniors feel so darn good — various studies have shown how beneficial laughter can be. Along with relieving stress and lowering blood pressure, laughter has been shown to relieve pain and boost the immune system

Who wouldn’t want to spent some time at a Laugh Cafe?!

Surfing, Skateboarding Cat Proves Our Feline Friends Make Awesome Adventure Buddies

Robert Dollwet says it’s his cat’s confidence that sets her apart.

We think it might be the fact that Didga the cat skateboards, swims, surfs — sometimes on top of dogs — and does gymnastics on command.

She even poops in a toilet. Then flushes.

OK, he’ll admit it: Didga is “most likely the most talented cat in the world,” says Dollwet, with more than a little fatherly pride.

You can watch this cat’s impressive range of skills in this spectacularly inspiring video Dollwet recently put together:

Dollwet is a former Hollywood dog trainer who moved to Australia seven years ago, for family reasons. (His partner, Tim, is Australian.)

Finding himself down under and sans pet, Dollwet went to the local animal shelter — where Didga basically insisted on being adopted.

“She was doing all she could do to get my attention,” Dollwet says. “Well, I had to go give this cat a closer look and I was sold. Animals really do pick you if you just let them.”

Back-cat-cha Didga & LucyI didn’t place her up there, Didga jumps on Lucy like a stunt horse rider. Why? I’m…

Posted by CATMANTOO on Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Soon after that, Didga then chose her current profession as feline role model/adventure buddy.

The story goes that she and Dollwet were out and about, when a guy rode up on a skateboard, “jumped off of it and left it right in front of us while he walked into the shop,” Dollwet says.

“Didga without hesitation went over and got on the skateboard.”

But if Didga was inclined toward performance, she still needed training.

Dollwet also says he’s worked with her tons, using “lots of patience and lots of well-timed food reinforcement.”

And sure, part of the point of putting Didga’s amazing repertoire on display is to advertise Dollwet’s training abilities. (He’s got a pet training business in Australia, now — his canine clients often hang out with Didga.)

But another big aim is getting the world excited about cats. Especially rescue cats like Didga, who currently fill shelters, and might get snatched up a lot faster if folks realized just how much more fun they could be having with their feline friends.

“Cats can learn all sorts of things as long as you have patience and knowledge to teach them the right way,” says Dollwet, who’s put up a couple dozen YouTube tutorials on cat training so you and your cat can enjoy all sorts of hobbies together as well.

Or even just so your cat might finally stop scratching the furniture, since Dollwet also advocates against declawing.

“It’s all to bring attention to cats, and teaching people how to be more responsible,” he says.

Dad … you’re not doing it right!!

Posted by CATMANTOO on Friday, July 3, 2015

Of course even the most precocious kitty needs some down time.

Dollwet probably doesn’t mean to brag too much here, either, but he really can’t help himself: Didga is top cat — a “great companion” — in that department, too. And he’s got an Instagram feed full of photos to prove it.

“Her tricks are taught over weeks, months, even years. Just a little bit every day,” Dollwet says. “The rest of the time is spent doing normal cat things around my house.”

#ThePowerOfMakeup Proves There’s No Shame In Wearing Makeup

Shaming, in all its forms, is a terrible reality in our society. Anyone brave enough to share photos of themselves on the Internet is immediately subject to criticism, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a makeup tutorial on YouTube without at least a few hateful comments underneath.

Every so often, however, something awesome comes along in response as a result. #ThePowerOfMakeup hashtag, is one of those things.

It all started with a viral YouTube video by hair and makeup artist NikkieTutorials that sent both men and women to Instagram to post selfies with half a face of makeup on — not only to defend the decision to wear it, but to prove its ability to help people express themselves, and, consequently, shut down said shamers.

“I feel like lately makeup shaming has become a thing,” wrote NikkieTutorials. “It’s as if putting makeup on to have fun is a shame. Therefore, I thought it would be cool to show you the power of makeup. A transformation. Because makeup… is FUN!”

#thepowerofmakeup

A photo posted by Teacher Jasmine (@teacher_jasmine_walkswebs) on

The idea is to show people that the decision to wear or not wear makeup is, of course, up to each individual person themselves. “We wear makeup because it’s fun. Stop shaming women and men for the way they look, whether it be about their weight, the way they dress, or the amount of makeup they wear!” one participant wrote.

Preach.

The tranforming powers of makeup indeed!… now I’m posting this for varied reasons. Too often I see women beating themselves up about not having perfect brows/lips/cheeks/skin etc. Tons of folk who know me say I have perfect skin, which is baws. I just have decent makeup skills to cover my skin. Right now I’m having fairly bad break outs due to stress, bad diet & neglect. I have acne scarred skin, I have spots, massive pours, I have skin colour irregularities due to my acne, i have old piercing scars, i have a non existant top lip, hobbit nose, my brows are thinning & I have rediculous combination skin with random patches of dryness which makes applying foundation a nightmare at times. I’m not saying I’m the worst when it comes to bad skin & facial features but I’m just showing you what good makeup can achieve… Hell, a good skin care routine could fix most of my issues but at the end of the day this doesn’t fuss me… people get so embarassed & angry over bad skin & unloved facial parts but it’s truly daft to. I’m human, you’re human, give yourselves a break. I have no issues with my face being like this, i like my face as is… sure I’d love to not have as many break outs but it happens. Break outs can be unavoidable at times, just take care of yourself & your skin as best as you can & make the most of it. Screw the airbrushed models with no pores on their face, loads of factors attribute to better skin, so if you feel crappy about your skin then change your routine (or start one), eat better, hydrate yourself, invest in better products, persistance is key & if you’re worried it’s something more serious then go see a dermatologist who can diagnose & treat your problem. Don’t get jealous of others, be happy in your own skin, it’s the only one you have 🙂 ….Unless you’re Buffalo Bill… take his advice… IT PUTS THE LOTION ON ITS SKIN!!… if you want that glowing skin, it’s all about the moisturising! 😉 #skin #piercings #piercedgirls #gamergirls #septum #septumstacking #makeup #mua #motd #muotd #blenditbitch #expression #youtube #peabrain #cyber #alien #neon #breakout #life #beauty #thepowerofmakeup #transformation #transformationtuesday #health

White Girl Tries To Sell Drugs To Cops, Proves White Privilege Is A Thing

What does a white girl gotta do to get arrested around here??

Comedian Jessie Kahnweiler wanted to know if she would get preferential treatment from the police simply for being a white woman. The results are hilarious — and frightening.

Kahnweiler pretty brilliantly shows how a funny, bubbly white girl can get away with a lot more things around police than, say, a black or hispanic person might be able to.

In one particularly crazy moment, Kahnweiler tries to sell two officers her leftover depression medication. They tell her she’d be committing a crime, and then let her go on her merry way when she apologizes and claims ignorance. So if you commit a crime, just say sorry and feign ignorance? Cool, got it.

That’s the lesson here, non-white people. When police stop you for doing nothing at all, just apologize for being a law-abiding citizen.

SO SIMPLE!

AMC Truly Proves Story Does Matter

“You really like those AMC shows don’t you?” a woman asked me recently. To which I said, “Yes, I do.” For AMC means it when they say story matters here. Also, it’s their compelling characters who give depth to their stories. Therefore, both story and characters matter at AMC.

Furthermore, it’s the stories that really capture us, when a character starts out good and ends up bad, or vice a versa. “That’s a bildungsroman,” another woman said to me a while ago. For if I hadn’t met her, I perhaps never would have heard of such a word. Bildungsroman, a German word, is basically about a main character in a novel going through moral and psychological growth. Like in the book and film Captains Courageous when the spoiled rich boy begins bad, to become good. Or in the Star Wars saga when Anakin Skywalker begins good, turns bad as Darth Vader, to be finally redeemed by his son Luke Skywalker in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.

On good vs. bad, much has been discussed about the character Don Draper of AMC’s Mad Men, as the series finale aired last month on May 17, 2015 concluding seven seasons since 2007. Monster, bully, selfish, Don Draper, exceptionally acted by Jon Hamm, has been called all of that and more, all basically, to be left and free for anyone’s assertion. Nevertheless, faithful fans never intended to watch Mad Men every Sunday night expecting Don Draper to one day become Gandhi. Only because, it has been consistently shown to fans that there’s more to Don Draper than his vices, and about the show itself, all taking place mostly in the 1960s.

Such as, on the surface, it may appear that Don Draper is a selfish person. But is he truly a selfish person? In season 4 episode 12 titled, “Blowing Smoke,” the year is 1965. The start-up ad agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (SCDP), formed on December 16, 1963 to evade a takeover by rival giant McCann-Erickson, is now trying to sail afloat. Lane Pryce asks the partners to each contribute a set amount of cash to stay in business. Don, Roger Sterling, and Bert Cooper to each give $ 100,000, with Lane and junior partner Pete Campbell to each give $ 50,000. Only Pete didn’t readily have $ 50,000, who afterwards said so to Don. Then Don says, “Pete, I’m doing everything I can.” Later, Pete tells Lane. The Englishman then smiles while saying, “Calm yourself. Don paid your share.” “What?” Pete replied. To which Lane added, “Perhaps, you weren’t supposed to know that.” Later on Pete sees Don across the hallway. Their eyes meet. Pete gives a grateful nod. Don also nods. Then both men walk purposefully away.

Yes, we’re in 2015. And $ 50,000 may not seem much to some. Still, $ 50,000 is a lot of money. Need proof? Just ask anyone with college loans.

Though in the year 1965, it helps to pause to appreciate the magnanimity of what Don Draper had done. According to dollar times dot com, in 1965, $ 50,000 had the same buying power as $ 376,301 now (bls dot gov figure is $ 375,554). Furthermore, Don also paid his share along with Pete’s, to combine at $ 150,000 then, having the same buying power as $ 1,128,904 in 2015. Also earlier in the same episode, Midge Daniels seeks Don, catching him as he just left work while in the grand lobby of New York’s Time-Life building. Don helps her out at her apartment by giving her $ 120.00 for one of her paintings, which has the same buying power as $ 903.00 in 2015. And speaking of college loans earlier, the cost of tuition at Harvard in 1965 was $ 1,760. So make no mistake, both $ 50,000 and $ 120.00 had amped-up turbo powered worth in 1965.

True, Don Draper is not a saint, for even both actor Jon Hamm and Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner have been known to agree, in their own words, during countless interviews. One such interview is in GQ magazine’s April 2015 edition. For on page 171 of the article titled, “Don Draper’s Gonna Die!” by Brett Martin, lead actor Jon Hamm states, “I’m the guy who lives with the guy every day, and I’m like, ‘No, no, no, no, no,'” he says to those people who would excuse Don’s behavior. Even so, Don Draper, advertising creative director, whose real name is Richard “Dick” Whitman, is not at all the sociopath some readily claim him to be. For on Quora, titled, “Does Don Draper have some traits of a psychopath?”, Liz Mullen, sports writer, gives a sterling, thoughtful, balanced answer. The following are excerpts as she says, “He feels guilt and remorse. He feels more love for his children than Betty Draper Francis, the mother of his children. Sociopaths feel nothing.” By also mentioning his ex-wife, Ms. Mullen makes another good point in that Mad Men is not all about Don. For Roger, Bert, Pete, Harry Crane, Peggy Olson and Joan Holloway all have some culpability about them, making them all believably multi-dimensional.

Don has done bad things, but he’s no Walter White. Leading us to Walter White from AMC’s Breaking Bad that began in 2008, and concluded on September 29, 2013 after five seasons. A great show, which exceeded in every way in acting, writing, directing and cinematography.

A true bildungsroman character to the max! For in the online article titled, “Breaking Bad: How Vince Gilligan Created TV’s Greatest Anti-Hero,” by Sanjiv Bhattacharya on September 22, 2013 for Esquire, it stated that lead actor Bryan Cranston was blown away by the pilot script. Then afterwards, it states, “… when Gilligan explained that he wanted to change this chemistry teacher from good to bad. ‘My jaw just dropped. I told him, I don’t think that’s been done in the history of serious television.'” And after all was said and done, Breaking Bad would go on to win 16 Primetime Emmy Awards and well deserved every one.

Breaking Bad wasn’t monochromatic. Shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico as the story unfolds of a high school chemistry teacher turned meth cook, drug dealer, and killer, with wife Skyler White, acted by Anna Gunn, trying to maintain home and hearth, Breaking Bad also showcased a colorful diverse cast, like AMC’s other yet current great show, The Walking Dead. Besides Walt, Skyler, son Walt Jr., baby Holly, DEA agent brother-in-law Hank and his wife Marie (sister of Skyler), and Walt’s accomplice former student Jesse Pinkman, there are many ethnic characters such as Hank’s friend DEA agent Steven Gomez, assistant principal Carmen Molina, Krazy 8, Combo, Huell, Gus Fring, Andrea Cantillo, son Brock, Tuco, Hector and the deadly Salamanca Twins. And there’s another character, the beautifully shot desert panorama by Michael Slovis.

About Breaking Bad’s popularity, Melissa Bernstein co-exec producer on season 5’s DVD sums it up by saying, “Vince is very much about what would a real person do?” Another reason of the show’s success is that it blends humor with drama. And this leads to The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead is quality drama. For the central theme is not about the gore or survival, but about cherishing humanity. We cherish that which is elemental if it is on the verge of being lost. Lead character Rick, acted by British actor Andrew Lincoln, and his group have moved into new digs this past season 5. A walled community of spacious homes so beautiful, you’d think each could be on the cover of Architectural Digest. And it’s a show truly worthy of an Emmy.

In fact, I’ve gone as far by sending a one-page letter this past March 20, 2015 to the head of the Television Academy, Chairman Bruce Rosenblum. For within I stated, “As a fan of The Walking Dead, I implore you to please become aware of the Emmy worthiness of this AMC TV drama.” Yes the ballots are out, as mentioned recently on June 15, 2015 in USA TODAY. And Mad Men may take it all. Still, to use the words of Badger in Breaking Bad‘s series finale, he says, “Damn, man, couldn’t he [Jesse Pinkman] at least throw a brother a bone?” And so to the voters of the Television Academy, on behalf of all The Walking Dead fans, please grant the show at least an acting, writing, or a directing nomination. Long live The Walking Dead, and AMC.

Herd Helps Collapsed Baby Elephant, Proves You Get By With A Little Help From Your Friends

When the going gets rough, friends and family always have your back — take it from this baby elephant.

A video uploaded to YouTube captures an elephant calf collapsing on the road in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, according to the clip’s description. But fear not, because the little one’s herd comes to help it back up and escort it back to safety.

Watch at the 0:21 mark as a larger elephant comes to tend to the calf. Other elephants join and nudge the little guy on the ground. Finally, at the 1:43 mark, the baby begins to stand up with the help of another larger elephant.

The herd must’ve taken Lilo’s words to heart — “‘Ohana’ means ‘family’ and ‘family’ means nobody gets left behind.”

Kardashian Throwback Photo Proves Kim Has Always Been Camera Ready

Turns out Kim Kardashian loved the camera long before she became the internet’s selfie queen.

In a throwback photo posted to Kris Jenner’s Instagram on Friday, an adolescent Kim poses alongside Kourtney Kardashian and two friends in a very model-esque pose.

Work it, girl.

All these years later, Kim and Kourtney’s younger sister Kendall Jenner actually is a veritable supermodel. Which makes us wonder: might there be some fun old footage still to be unearthed that hints at her future walking the runway? Aside from old episodes of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” that is.

Science Proves That Hugs Can Boost Your Immune System

We know that hugs make us feel warm and fuzzy inside. And this feeling, it turns out, could actually ward off stress and protect the immune system, according to new research from Carnegie Mellon University.

It’s a well-known fact that stress can weaken the immune system. In this study, the researchers sought to determine whether hugs — like social support more broadly — could protect individuals from the increased susceptibility to illness brought on by the particular stress that comes with interpersonal conflict.

“We know that people experiencing ongoing conflicts with others are less able to fight off cold viruses. We also know that people who report having social support are partly protected from the effects of stress on psychological states, such as depression and anxiety,” the study’s lead author, psychologist Dr. Sheldon Cohen, said in a statement. “We tested whether perceptions of social support are equally effective in protecting us from stress-induced susceptibility to infection and also whether receiving hugs might partially account for those feelings of support and themselves protect a person against infection.”

In the experiment, over 400 healthy adults who filled out a questionnaire about their perceived social support and also participated in a nightly phone interview for two weeks. They were asked about the frequency that they engaged in interpersonal conflict and received hugs that day.

Then, the researchers exposed the participants to a common cold virus, and monitored them to assess signs of infection. They found that both perceived social support and more frequent hugs reduced the risk of infection associated with experiencing interpersonal conflict. Regardless of whether or not they experienced social conflicts, infected participants with greater perceived social support and more frequent hugs had less severe illness symptoms.

“This suggests that being hugged by a trusted person may act as an effective means of conveying support and that increasing the frequency of hugs might be an effective means of reducing the deleterious effects of stress,” Cohen said. “The apparent protective effect of hugs may be attributable to the physical contact itself or to hugging being a behavioral indicator of support and intimacy… Either way, those who receive more hugs are somewhat more protected from infection.”

If you needed any more reason to go wrap your arms around someone special, consider this: Hugs also lower blood pressure, alleviate fears around death and dying, improve heart health and decrease feelings of loneliness.

The findings were published in the journal Psychological Science.

North Shore Music Theater’s A Christmas Carol Proves Dickens Tale Still Resonates

Generations of us know the story of Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol,” having been raised on it in one form or another. From Alastair Sim’s tour-de-force performance in the quintessential 1951 film version, to Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol (now being adapted for the NY Stage sans Magoo), Bill Murray in “Scrooged”, etc… The list of remakes of Dickens tale is longer than Jacob Marley’s chains!

This past weekend I went to see the perennial stage version at Bill Haney’s North Shore Music Theatre (NSMT). Now in its 24th year! Once again I was blown away by the high caliber of theater that the adorable Mr. Hanney and his company have assembled. The production swept me up in the story and made me realize just how and why “A Christmas Carol” will never be dated or out of fashion, a realization that is almost bittersweet. More on that later…

2014-12-17-ACC14TitleWEB.jpg

Of course behind every “Bah Humbug” there had better be one hell of a great Scrooge to utter the classic epithet. For my money in the cinematic world Sir Alastir Sim will always be the definitive Ebenezer Scrooge with George C. Scott running a close second.

Clearly “if it isn’t broke don’t fix it” is the catch phrase at NSMT with stage veteran David Coffee, now in his 21st year playing the part of “the wicked Ol’ screw.” Mr. Coffee could have given Patrick Stuart a lesson or two in the art of “Scrooging.”

(If you missed Mr. Stuart’s lackluster TV version count yourself lucky!) Playing a role for over two decades could easily lead to a very staid and static performance, but clearly Mr. Coffee adheres to what the great actor William Gillette (who played Sherlock Holmes over thirty years) stated: “The important thing to remember about acting is the illusion of the first time.” His performance is just as fresh today, and I had audience members next to me who confirmed that. Coffee brilliantly infuses all the blustery, curmudgeonly, miserly ingredients inherent to the part, and when the magical transformative moment arrives he leaves the audience:” as happy as an angel, as merry as a school-boy, as giddy as a drunken man.” Bravo, Mr. Coffee!

Also of note, Cheryl McMahon as Scrooge’s saucy housekeeper, Mrs. Dilbur. McMahon shares an incredible chemistry with Mr. Coffee, and no wonder! She is celebrating her 21st year alongside him in this production. I especially enjoyed the subtle insinuation of a possible future romance between the two upon Scrooge’s transformation.

The audience upon being seated sees only an illuminated crutch against a stool on the stage. Once the show begins, the audience is taken on the journey by a handsome young man who walks with a slight limp and the aid of a cane. Yes, we are seeing the story told through eyes of a grown Up Tim Cratchit, played to gentle perfection by Tommy Labanaris.

This production had other wonderful stand out performances I would be remiss in not mentioning. Including Russell Garrett as Bob Cratchit who brings a lovely warmth and kindness of spirit necessary for Scrooge’s long suffering clerk.

Another stellar performance was given by Scarlet Keene-Connole as Scrooge’s young sister, Fan. This kid is going places! I had the pleasure of hearing her sing at the after party where she knocked “I’m The Greatest Star” out of the park (Lea Michelle, eat your heart out!) Mr. Hanney if you are thinking ahead a few years, maybe, “Wicked” starring Miss Connole as Elphaba! Yes?

Experientially I must point out the lavish costumes as crafted by Paula Peasley-Ninesteen. From the beautiful ball gowns to Jacob Marley’s decrepit corpse like couture, Peasley-Ninesteen’s costumes are a Victorian etching come to life. Additional kudos to Gerard Kelly for his impeccable hair and wig design. Further, the marriage of Howard C. Jones’ scenic design added to Jack Mehler’s lighting design with Leon Rothenberg’s sound design all combine to provide the shows surreal Dickensian quality.

Many forget that Dickens subtitled his tale “A Ghost Story” and NSMT lives up to that in spades. When the ghost of Jacob Marley flies into Scrooges bed chamber the effect is absolutely terrifying. Freddie Kimmel conjures up Marley’s ghost wailing in agony, of an eternity chained in limbo, magnificently. As the ghost of Christmas Past Leigh Barrett offers a beautiful soaring Mezzo-Soprano. I was most impressed by Peter S. Adams as the ghost of Christmas Present, who dominated the stage on stilts, while belting out a carol in a luscious and rich baritone. Extremely effective as well is when Scrooge learns of his imminent death by the ghost of Christmas Future. Under a black veiled death shroud we learn (in an inspired twist) that it is actually Young Ebenezer!

The production flows seamlessly under the direction of its adaptor Jon Kimbell. Additionally, Kevin P. Hill (NSMT’s dashing Artistic Director) collaborated to add some new touches to this year’s production. Brava to both gentlemen for making it shine brighter than one of Scrooge’s schillings.

As I mentioned earlier the fact that this story still resonates is in many ways bittersweet. How many Bob Crachitts do we know? Over worked, underpaid and struggling to provide for a family. Especially those with sick children trying to make ends meet in an age where health insurance is often an unreachable goal. It is a sad commentary that in 2014 there are still “Scrooges”, who have not had the benefit of visits from ghostly apparitions to knock some sense into their money bag of a brain or their icy cold hearts.

NSMT’s “A Christmas Carol” has once more instilled Dickens belief in me to honor Christmas in my heart and keep it all the year, and allow the spirits of the Christmas Past, Present and Future to strive within me and not shut out the lessons that they teach.

Cliché though it may be: God bless us everyone!

Knott’s “Special Ops: Infected” proves that wide open spaces can be just as scary as dark twisty mazes

It sounds like an interesting challenge. Staging an authentic-looking zombie apocalypse while — at the same time — not scratching up any of Grizzly Creek Lodge’s nice new furniture.

But that’s exactly what Jon Cooke has spent the past five-and-a-half weeks doing. Taking Knott’s Berry Farm‘s recently refurbished Camp Snoopy and — using the 45 minutes between when this Buena Park theme park closes for the day and when Halloween Haunt officially opens for the night — then transforming this family-friendly area into a six-acre wide kill zone.

“While Security is clearing the Park and sweeping the last few Guests towards the exit, myself and six or seven other Knott’s employees are backstage preparing everything. We have a box truck loaded up with bodies and barricades, different barrels and stuff. And as soon as we get a Park Clear, we drive onstage and immediately begin setting everything up,” Cooke explained during a recent phone interview. “Our goal is to have the entire area flipped and get all of our zombies in place before the first Guest wanders back to Camp Snoopy and then get in line for ‘Special Ops: Infected.’ “

2014-11-01-Infected1.jpg

“And what is ‘Special Ops: Infected’?,” you ask. SOI is the multi-track, interactive, group participation experience that Jon — who is one of the leads in Knott’s Scary Farm’s prop department — has been trying to convince Cedar Fair officials to build for a number of years now.

“I’m a paintball fan. I love doing physical stuff, plus playing video games like ‘Left 4 Dead.’ But then when ‘The Walking Dead‘ debuted on AMC and then became this huge hit, it all just kind of clicked for me one day. That here was this perfect storm of elements that could now be combined to create a maze that was unlike anything else that had ever been done for Haunt before,” Cooke continued. “So I brought this idea up to Lara Hanneman, who’s the Director of Entertainment here at Knott’s one day. And she just kind of looked at me and said ‘Yeah, that sounds pretty cool. But how exactly are we going to pull that off?’ ”

And why was Hanneman concerned? Because what Jon wanted to do wasn’t really a maze. At least not in the traditional sense.

2014-11-01-Infected3.jpg

“When you’re building a maze for a Halloween event like this, strictly from a design point-of-view, you always design the rooms for your maze with two things in mind: Where is each scare in that room going to come from? And where is the distraction going to come from that then sets up the scare in that room?,” Jon stated. “With ‘Special Ops: Infected,’ by placing a laser tag gun in each of the Guest’s hands, that’s our distraction.”

“What also helps here to give Guest a different experience is that ‘Special Ops: Infected’ doesn’t play by traditional haunted house rules. You’re not being sent into a maze two and three people at a time. Here, the Guests are grouped in 12-person squads. They’ve then assigned two squad leaders — actors that we’ve hired for Haunt specifically to play these roles — who then take each group out into what used to be Camp Snoopy but is now a fog-filled wide open space filled with 135 zombies,” Jon enthused. “Better yet, depending on which side of the land that these people began their mission on — the Alpha Side or the Bravo side — and which of the four variations of our basic Alpha & Bravo scenarios they wind up being assigned to, these people can have completely different experiences each time they enter the kill zone.”

Take — for example — the Bravo side. Where your initial mission is to head up high into the hills and find a secret laboratory. Once there, you’re supposed to rescue this scientist who may have found the cure to this horrible zombie virus. The only problem is — as you’re making your way back to Base … Well, it’s not just the zombies that you have to worry about. There’s also a rogue militia unit hiding out there in the fog who may try and capture your squad so that they can then …

2014-11-01-Infected2.jpg

Ah, let’s not spoil the surprise. Especially since folks in Southern California still have a chance to grab a laser gun and go shoot some zombies this weekend. You see, rather than shutting down its annual Halloween event on October 31st, Knott’s officials opted instead to keep this year’s Haunt going through Saturday night, November 1st. Just understand that — if you’re driving out to Buena Park to experience “Special Ops: Infected” — that you could be in for quite a wait tonight.

“Right from the get-go, this particular maze has been hugely popular with Haunt attendees. The first week of this year’s Scary Farm, I actually had a Guest come up to me and say that he’d been back to the Park three nights in a row just so he could then try and do all of the variations of the ‘Special Ops: Infected’ combat missions,” Cooke stated. “I didn’t have the heart to tell him that we keep changing things up from night to night.”

“Take — for example — the combat mission you go on when you’re doing the Alpha track. You first have to get to this campsite and then rescue this camper who’s locked inside of a trailer,” Jon said. “Well, we change the location of where we hide that key every night. So even if you’ve done this particular mission before at Haunt, there are still different challenges, enough variations to keep ‘Special Ops: Infected’ fresh for Knott’s repeat customers.”

2014-11-01-Infected4.jpg

So if you’d like to work off some of that Trick-or-Treat candy that you ate last night by working up a sweat running away from zombies, then you should definitely check out the closing night of the 2014 edition of Knott’s Scary Farm. Where you can then experience “Special Ops: Infected,” that unique Haunt experience which proves that wide open spaces can be just as scary — or even scarier — then dark twisty mazes.

#ShareaCondom Campaign Proves (Safe) Sex Sells

2014-10-23-Tinder_datecopy.jpg

Advertisers may have found the secret to millennial marketing: ego boosting, social media, and sex. Coke’s #ShareaCoke campaign and condom manufacturer Poke’s #ShareaCondom campaign have both led to tremendous spikes in product sales and popularity, especially among young consumers.

New research determined millennials top three “wants” in life, which advertisers used to develop an effective marketing method:

Want: Identity as an important, one-of-a-kind individual.
Method: Boost ego with personalization by name or high-status label.

Want: Maximum attention on social media.
Method: Instagram a Like-worthy pic with witty caption.

Want: Sex.
Method: Get sex.

2014-10-23-condombae.jpg

Coke used this data first in their summer 2014 campaign #ShareaCoke, creating new bottles for sharing with labels specifying a name or a sentimental group, like a “Star” and “Family”. Drinkers were encouraged to share the soft drink in real life and on social media. The bottles and cans were Instagrammed at an unprecedented rate.

“I was at Target with my BFF Bev and I saw a Diet Coke with a ‘BFF’ label,” said 20-year-old University of Florida communications student Christie Boone. “Obvi I bought it, and duh I Instagrammed a pic of us with it. Triple-digit Likes and zero cals; hashtag winning.”

According to Boone, #ShareaCoke also created sexual tension across college campuses as the bottles were “an icebreaker for hot randos to meet, chat, and, you know.”

2014-10-23-condomapplegenstuart.jpg

Educators, parents, and condom manufacturers have worked to make safe sex appealing to young people for decades with minimal success – until now. Shadowing Coke’s marketing tactic, Poke’s “#ShareaCondom” campaign is enjoying similar success while also preventing unplanned pregnancy and STDs.

“We were inspired to apply the passions and talents of millennials – ego, sex, and social media – and it worked,” said human sexuality researcher Jaime Henderson, Ph.D. “Condom use is at a record high!”

“I’m thrilled about this #ShareaCondom campaign,” said high school sexual education teacher Hailee Koals. “For years we’ve been trying to make safe sex cool. Who knew all we had to do was add a hashtag?”

#ShareaCondom encourages users to share a condom with a broader range of individuals, including a “Cycling Instructor”, “Apple Genius”, and “One Night Stand”.*

“Who you decide to do is your business,” said Poke’s Chief Marketing Officer Mitchell Klump. “We just want the labels to resonate with this generation’s sexual realities.”

Sex, social media, and ego drive many of our actions, whether it’s posting a picture simply for Likes (and attention) or fulfilling a natural desire for love (and possibly attention). These are prominent cultural forces that are here to stay.

“Last night I was at Target, again, and I saw a box of Poke’s with a ‘BF’ label,” Boone said. “Obvi I bought it, and duh I’m going to use them. My boyfriend and I are Facebook official. Hashtag blessed. Hashtag share a condom!”

But while trends that spread virally on social media, such as “My New Haircut” and “Harlem Shake”, ultimately always disappear, sexually transmitted diseases that spread virally are forever. Get in the mix, #ShareaCondom.

Touching Mirror Experiment Proves That ‘You’re Enough Just The Way You Are’

Mirrors are devious, lying fixtures that should never be trusted to give an honest opinion.

That’s the general takeaway from “What Do Strangers Think Of You?“, a BuzzFeed video that set individuals in front of a mirror, then asked them to honestly describe themselves. At the same time, and unbeknownst to them, strangers in another room were asked to offer their opinions of the individual.

As is often the case, the people judging themselves were their harshest critics. Even more surprising: What they described as a “flaw” either went unnoticed by the stranger, or was perceived as a strength.

The video is reminiscent of the Dove’s “Real Beauty Sketches” campaign, which used a similar tactic to promote the tagline, “You are more beautiful than you think.”

Watch the uplifting video, above.

“3 Days to Kill” Proves Costner’s Still Got It

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“3 Days to Kill” (Relativity)

Kevin Costner is starring in the new action flick “3 Days to Kill” and he is bringing his charm and charisma with him. Costner has co-stars in the movie, notably Amber Heard and Hailee Steinfeld, but the success or failure of this film rests on his shoulders and his unique talent. At one time in his career every project he touched turned to gold but in the last few years that “Midas touch” has evaporated. This movie however indicates a large portion of the Costner charm is still on view.

Costner plays government hit man Ethan Renner. He is one of the best in his business but his health is deteriorating. Faced with the diagnosis that he is dying Ethan returns to Paris where his wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) and daughter Zoey (Steinfeld) live. He wants to connect with them one last time.

Ethan does not tell his daughter of his condition which means that her hostile feelings towards him continue. To further complicate his life, a CIA operative named Vivi (Heard) tells him she has an experimental drug that can extend his life. She will provide it if he will do one last job for the Agency. He agrees even though he has promised his wife he is out of this business.

The film, which is based on a screenplay by Luc Bresson among others, revs up the violence quotient and keeps Ethan dodging bullets. Bresson is the man behind the celebrated action films “Taken” and “The Transporter.” He definitely knows how to keep audiences enthralled in the action on screen.

As Ethan, Costner creates the same kind of romantic hero he perfected in movies such as “The Bodyguard” and “Field of Dreams.” In this film Ethan picks Zoey up in his arms to carry her to safety. This brings back those chilling moments when he did the same for Whitney Houston in “The Bodyguard.”

Heard, Steinfeld and Nielsen give strong support to Costner in this film. Heard creates a character who is a cool killer but also an alluring ally. Nielsen adds to the emotionalism of the film as the woman who hates what Ethan does but loves him just the same. Steinfeld makes Zoey as complex and adorable as any teen can be.

The film is rated PG-13 for profanity, brief nudity and violence.

This movie is not without its flaws. The violent scenes are a bit redundant and the length of the film is too long. Still for those who have wanted Costner’s star to return to its orbit “3 Days To Kill” is a pleasant surprise.

I scored “3 Days to Kill” a slain 6 out of 10.

Couple Of 72 Years Proves It’s Never Too Late To Have The Wedding Of Your Dreams

By Kristen Klein for Bridal Guide

When Mira and Bob Graves tied the knot back in 1942, they did what many young couples of their generation did — they had a quick, no-frills ceremony before Bob was shipped off to war. They’d only been dating for a few months, but they decided to elope right after witnessing their friends exchange vows in Reno.

Seventy-two years later, the happy couple lives at Antioch’s Quail Lodge Retirement Home, where they were named king and queen of the home’s Valentine’s Day celebration. The only problem: When asked to provide a picture of their wedding, they couldn’t — because none were ever taken.

Though the couple has never regretted their low-key wedding ceremony, they jumped at the chance for a wedding do-over when the home’s director, Jennifer Noble, made the suggestion. Noble sprang into action, working with the local community to secure a gown, tux, cake, flowers, music and, most importantly, a photographer.

This Couple Really Loves Football — and Their Wedding Proves It

By Jamie Miles for TheKnot.com

This couple really knows how to stick to a theme! I guess it’s easy when you’re both die-hard football fans (she’s a Giants fan; he’s a Red Skins supporter). Everything from the boutonnieres to the cake toppers and even the wedding sign announcing the bride’s walk down the aisle were inspired by this couple’s shared love of the game. But they even went a step further. Rather than exchanging traditional vows, the couple wrote their own:

From preseason through the play-offs and Super Bowl, in good health and injury, despite tackles and fumbles, whether the New York Giants win or lose, I promise to support and always love you in our game of marriage. And take you as my wife.

This couple’s game-day-inspired wedding by Look Wedding Photography is a touchdown. Here’s why:

The Bride wore New York Giants blue shoes.

Even her flowers fit with the Giants’s team colors.

The groomsmen wore mini-football boutonnieres.

Conspiracy Theorist Proves John F. Kennedy Never Existed

A startling new book, I Do Solemnly Swear…Not!, offers incontrovertible proof that the late President John F. Kennedy never actually existed. “JFK’s supposed life and death were the greatest hoaxes perpetrated on the United States since the so-called ‘signing of the Declaration of Independence,'” says author Maxwell Furlobble. “It’s part of a conspiracy so vast and complex that I’m pretty sure I’m part of it, which, of course, is exactly what they want you to think and I do.”

According to Furlobble, the Kennedy Family itself was invented in the 1840s by The Finger, a consortium that included oil speculators, the Illuminati, the Catholic Church, Freemasons, Whigs, and extraterrestrials from the Phoenix Dwarf and Triangulum Galaxies. “The Finger has controlled all of American and Greek history, using a combination of powerful mind rays, holograms and puppets,” explains Furlobble. “Whenever people thought John F. Kennedy was in a room, he really wasn’t. For those people who were there, you were all tricked. For those people who weren’t there, well, you can’t really say what happened, can you? Can you? Ha! In your face!”

When people suspected the truth about The Finger in the early 1960s, “John F. Kennedy” had to be “eliminated” and The Order turned to filmmaker Stanley Kubrick to fake the famous Zapruder footage. “Abraham Zapruder never existed and neither did Dallas, Texas,” says Furlobble. “Kubrick did exist, though, although the moon landing he later faked made no difference since the moon isn’t real.”
