NBC Pulls ‘Racist’ Trump Ad as Civilian Militia Groups Head to Border Amid Tension Over Caravan

The caravan of Central American migrants traveling up through Mexico to the U.S. southern border is continuing to stir up political controversy. President Donald Trump is once again facing accusations of racism over his response to the matter, and now some of his supporters have decided to take illegal immigration issues into their own hands.

According to a new report, NBC News, Fox News and CNN have all announced that they will not air an anti-immigration ad sponsored by the 45th commander in chief, 72, which encourages viewers to vote Republican ahead of the midterms. The ad portrays members of the caravan, many of whom are women and children, as invaders and criminals and links them to an undocumented immigrant who was convicted of killing two law enforcement officials in California.

“America cannot allow this invasion,” the voiceover exclaims. “President Trump and his allies will protect our border and keep our families safe.”

A spokesperson for NBC’s advertising sales department, Joe Benarroch, explained the decision to pull the ad in a statement published by NBC News: “After further review, we recognize the insensitive nature of the ad and have decided to cease airing it across our properties as soon as possible.”

Fox News pulled the ad without refuting anything specific about its content or tone. “Upon further review, FOX News pulled the ad yesterday and it will not appear on either FOX News Channel or FOX Business Network,” Marianne Gambelli, the president of ad sales for the network, said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

CNN, meanwhile, never agreed to air the ad in the first place.

After Donald Trump Jr. complained on Twitter that CNN “refused to run” the ad, a CNN spokesperson responded in a tweet saying, “CNN has made it abundantly clear in its editorial coverage that this ad is racist. When presented with an opportunity to be paid to take a version of this ad, we declined. Those are the facts.”

In addition, Facebook stopped the ad from circulating via paid promotion because it allegedly violates the social network’s “sensational content” policy. That said, the ad is still up on President Trump’s verified Facebook page, where it has been viewed more than 300,000 times.

NBC, Fox News, CNN, Facebook and the White House did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment. On Monday, the president stood by the ad, despite accusations that it was offensive. “Well, a lot of things are offensive,” he told reporters, according to NBC News. “Your questions are offensive a lot of times.”

Amid ongoing threats from Trump, thousands of migrants are continuing their journey through Mexico and toward the U.S. border, in search of a safer and more prosperous life. According to The New York Times, the migrants — who are fleeing poverty and violence in their home countries, including Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala — travel in caravans for protection against the criminals that stalk their trip north.

On Sunday, the migrant caravan, still about 4,000 people deep, entered the city of Cordoba in the Mexican state of Veracruz after completing what was known as the “route of death,” NBC reported. On Monday, several hundred travelers hit another milestone, arriving at Mexico City, according to BBC. The fractured group is still hundreds of miles away, and it’s unclear if it will reunite or where along the U.S. it will attempt to enter.

Amid Trump’s repeated attacks on the caravan, which he has turned into an election issue, some American citizens are so concerned about the issue that they’ve banded together to try to prevent the travelers from entering — alongside the military presence that the president has already ordered at the border.

According to Defense Department planning documents obtained by Newsweek, an “estimated 200 unregulated armed militia members currently operating along the southwest border,” and there have been multiple “reported incidents” of them “stealing National Guard equipment.” The documents further explain that the groups “operate under the guise of citizen patrols supporting .”

One of these organizations is the Minuteman Project, which refers to itself as “citizen’s Neighborhood Watch on the southern border,” the magazine reports.

“We believe our nation is under attack by foreigners who refuse to accept the rule of law on how to become a citizen in the United States,” the project’s national political director Howie Morgan told the outlet. “Instead of following the rules, they are using our nation’s laws as a shortcut to get in front of the line.”

The Minuteman Project also encouraged forming more militia groups in a message on its homepage. “Your presence is needed everywhere along the 2,000-mile border from San Diego, California to Brownsville, Texas at any time for the next 90 days,” the statement read.

As tensions over illegal immigration reach new heights, the president is making progress with his long-standing campaign promise to build a wall dividing Mexico and the U.S.

On Friday, CBS reported that the Texas-based construction company SLSCO received a $ 220 million contract to, in February, start constructing an 18-foot reinforced concrete levee wall in the Rio Grande valley, the busiest section for border crossings. SLSCO will also raise the height of existing fences.

Chrissy Teigen Pulls Out a Nicki Minaj Pose for John Mayer in Hilarious Tweet

Chrissy Teigen won the Internet for the 100th time on Saturday with one perfectly-timed tweet.

The 32-year-old cookbook author and model, who is currently expecting her second child with husband John Legend, saw pal John Mayer lamenting about the overuse of PhotoShop and FaceTune on social media.

“Nothing provides a clear view into someone’s taste, eye or intentions like the way they retouch a photo,” Mayer wrote Friday.

Teigen knew just what to do. Digging into her archives, she pulled out a picture of herself she later explained she had since September 2015 and sent it back to Mayer without commentary.

The photo had Teigen’s head placed on the body of Nicki Minaj in her iconic booty-bearing squat pose immortalized on the cover art of the rapper’s 2014 single “Anaconda.”

Mayer was thrilled, telling Teigen on Twitter that he was “dying” of laughter.

“New hi score,” he said, adding, “John Mayer took a screen shot!”

Minaj found it funny too. Hours later, she reposted the photo with a crying laughing emoji.

But what Teigen might not know is that Mayer and Minaj had a flirty past.

In September Mayer declared, “I spend an inordinate amount of time per day wondering if Nicki Minaj would like me or not,” which quickly drew a response from the rapper. “Would my body be your wonderland?” Minaj asked, referencing Mayer’s 2002 hit. “Asking for a friend.”

The musician was left speechless by the innuendo-filled retort. “Please hold on, losing my s—,” Mayer responded. “This isn’t my reply yet.”

As Mayer explained in a November appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, though, he doesn’t plan on responding because Minaj, 34, “wins that exchange.”

“At the time when I wrote it — No. 1 it’s completely authentic and No. 2, I forgot that I was a famous person and that I would find out very quickly whether or not she would like me,” he told host Andy Cohen with a laugh.

“In very short order, something was going on with the retweet thing and I went, ‘Oh man, this is going to be bigger than I thought.’ But she was really, really kind and funny to me. And I was like, ‘She wins.’ She wins that exchange. She spiked the ball — it was great. You’re supposed to spike the ball and I’m supposed to lose and you win, and for the most part, I thought it was cool.”

The two haven’t spoken since their back-and-forth — and that’s by design.

“That portal between two people who follow each other that could be crossed by either side should be respected,” Mayer said. “Two follows does not a DM relationship make, is what I’m saying. I think we’re both very responsible with the membrane that connects two people who follow each other on Twitter. Right now it’s just puncturing it just to do it. If we need each other, I think we know we’re there.”

NBC Pulls Powerless From Schedule

NBC’s DC comedy show Powerless is no longer on NBC’s schedule for the next few weeks, and there’s no indication of when the show will resume airing.

IGN can confirm that Powerless has currently been pulled from the schedule, with three episodes left in the season (one of which features a guest spot from Batman actor Adam West). No plans have been made yet, however, for when they might air.

As TVLine reports, Superstore will now fill in Powerless’ Thursday night timeslot with reruns. Since its February 2 premiere, Powerless has struggled in the ratings and it’s unclear whether the last two episodes will still air.

School Pulls Book About Gender Non-Conforming Kid After Backlash

A pair of children’s authors is firing back after a North Carolina school district scrapped plans to incorporate their book about a gender non-conforming boy into its anti-bullying curriculum.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg school administrators had been planning to use Jacob’s New Dress, about a young boy who likes to wear dresses, in first-grade classes as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April. On Friday, however, Superintendent Ann Clark told The New York Times that the 2014 book had been replaced “due to some concerns” about content. Michael Hall’s Red: A Crayon’s Story, which follows a blue crayon misidentified with a red label, would be read instead.

Written by Sarah and Ian HoffmanJacob’s New Dress had been criticized by the N.C. Values Coalition, which supports “standards in higher education that do not violate religious freedom and free speech rights of students” and is opposed to same-sex marriage, according to its website.

“The purpose of our elementary schools is to teach writing, reading and arithmetic, not to encourage boys to wear dresses,” an N.C. Values Coalition official wrote in a statement to The Charlotte ObserverJacob’s New Dress, the official argued, was “not appropriate for any child whose parents support traditional family values.”

The Hoffmans, who reside in California, said the furor that Jacob’s New Dress had generated was “confusing,” telling The Charlotte Observer that their book’s message was one of “love and acceptance.” The couple based the book on their experiences raising their 14-year-old son, Sam, who favored pink and once asked to wear a dress to preschool.

Speaking to The Huffington Post, Ian Hoffman dismissed the N.C. Values Coalition’s claim that Jacob’s New Dress encouraged boys to wear dresses. “Our hope, when we wrote this book, was that someday it would be considered quaint,” he said. “We imagined future generations saying, ‘What was the fuss about?’ Clearly, there’s more work to do … our book is a small piece of a much larger effort to build a more empathetic, compassionate culture.”

In an interview with The Charlotte Observer, Sarah Hoffman echoed those sentiments, arguing against the implication that the book would somehow turn children gay or transgender. “If a white kid reads a book about Martin Luther King Jr.,” she said, “will they become black?”

The couple’s book has stirred controversy before. In 2015, some parents of kindergarten students in Pennsylvania’s Lampeter-Strasburg School District objected to Jacob’s New Dress being read to their children without prior notification.

An area pastor also spoke out against the book in an interview with Lancaster Online at the time, saying that a family associated with his church was troubled since they had a child in the class where the book had been read.

“I am not suggesting that any of the school officials are pushing the gay agenda, yet their actions give the appearance that they are,” Pastor Jamie Mitchell of Harvest Bible Chapel said. He called upon Lampeter-Strasburg school administrators to “apologize, take responsibility and then publicly promise never to introduce this kind of material with this kind of agenda to our children.”

Artist Rodney Graham ‘Pulls Coats’ at Akris

WEARABLE ART: Guests at the Akris show in Paris on Sunday discovered the work of Vancouver artist Rodney Graham, who mounted a 2015 exhibition in Zurich devoted to photos of himself donning an overcoat.
Akris designer Albert Kriemler displayed the photos in his show space — including one called “Coat Puller” — and printed the images on the backs of some coats, and as linings.
“I use myself as a model in my photographs,” Graham explained, noting that the clothes he wears are important. “Often they’re costumes, reflecting different characters. Sometimes I get them made in Vancouver by a costume maker. Or I just assemble things together. You know, prop shops.”
It wasn’t Graham’s first collaboration with a fashion designer. “Actually I did a white shirt with Ann Demeulemeester in 1992, a long time ago,” he recalled. “It came in a box, so it was kind of an artwork collaboration. There were only 10 of them — a very small edition.”
After flashing the Neil Barrett label on his sports jacket, Graham noted he’s preparing exhibitions for the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Newcastle, England, and Museum Frieder Burda in Baden Baden, Germany.

Man Pulls Off Aca-Amazing Proposal For His ‘Pitch Perfect’-Obsessed Girlfriend

Unless you count singing in the shower, Max Podell has no vocal experience whatsoever. But that didn’t stop him from popping the question to his girlfriend by recreating a scene from “Pitch Perfect” with a group of his equally amateur (but enthusiastic!) friends.

At a friend’s birthday party on May 8, Max and eight of his buddies sang along to the Treblemakers‘ finale performance from the first movie for his girlfriend Lindsay Versage. The guys rocked blazers and shorts and even attempted some choreography all in the name of romance. Towards the end of the routine, Max comes out and serenades the bride-to-be with a cover of B.o.B and River Cuomo’s song “Magic.”

“We love the movie, and we love the soundtrack,” he told The Huffington Post. “So do most of our friends. Lindsay puts the music on almost every time we are in the car together. Every time that song comes on, I sing that part to her. It’s special between us.”

cute engaged pic

At first, Lindsay thought the performance was something the boys had planned as a surprise for their friend Jenny’s birthday. But once she figured out what was going on, Lindsay was over the moon.

“I was absolutely stunned!” she told HuffPost. “It was the most surreal moment and it took me a little while to even realize exactly what was happening. I couldn’t believe how many people were involved and how they pulled it off. It was the best moment of my entire life and I will remember it forever.”
