Going Trick-or-Treating on Wednesday? Bring Your DIY UNICEF Box to Raise Money for the Cause

Remember those little orange boxes you could take trick-or-treating to raise money for UNICEF? They’re back — and you can even make one by yourself before you go collecting candy on Wednesday night.

The Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign kicked off in 1950 and has raised nearly $ 177 million to help the organization provide children with healthcare, nutrition, safe water, emergency relief and educational services.

While some might not see the difference some spare change can make, it’s huge: 50 cents provides one packet of ready-to-use therapeutic food to help a malnourished child, $ 2 provides 10 bars of soap and $ 5 provides one UNICEF backpack for a child to use at school.

Can covers are available to download at TrickorTreatforUNICEF.org, along with more information on this year’s #BeScaryGood campaign, featuring Slappy from the movie Goosebumps 2. Those who have their hands full with chocolate but still want to help can contribute at unicef.org. It’ll feel just as good as that post-holiday sugar high.

Woman Gets 18 Years After Posing as Nurse to Kidnap Newborn and Raise the Girl as Her Own

On Friday, nearly two decades after she abducted an hours-old infant from a hospital in Florida and then raised the girl as her own, a South Carolina woman was reportedly sentenced to 18 years in prison for kidnapping — the length of time the stolen child lived away from her biological family.

“There are no winners and no losers in this case,” Judge Marianne Aho said at the sentencing hearing for 52-year-old Gloria Williams, of Walterboro, according to the Associated Press.

Williams pleaded guilty earlier this year to kidnapping and custodial interference. Under the terms of her plea deal, she could be sentenced to no more than 22 years in prison. She was ordered on Friday to serve five years concurrently for the interference charge.

Williams was sentenced in Duval County, Florida, where she kidnapped newborn Kamiyah Mobley from UF Health Jacksonville, then called University Medical Center, on July 10, 1998, while she was disguised as a nurse.

She said at a sentencing hearing last month that she smuggled Kamiyah out of the building in a bag, local TV station WJAX reported. She had not planned that day to steal a baby when — having recently miscarried — she traveled from her South Carolina home to Florida, she said: “I felt like I was on autopilot. My life was out of control, I lost everything.”

Mobley’s mother, Shanara Mobley, was 16 years old and has said she trusted Williams because the older woman spent hours getting to know her and Kamiyah.

Neither a prosecutor’s spokesman nor Mobley’s attorney immediately responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The headline-making case broke open in January 2017, when authorities announced that anonymous tips led them to discover Williams raised Kamiyah in South Carolina under the name Alexis Manigo and that Kamiyah believed Williams was her biological mother.

The revelation that Kamiyah was alive and well attracted international attention, and her return came as a startling relief to her biological family.

Still, the confirmation of her life as an unwitting kidnapping victim set up a series of thorny entanglements for her and her loved ones — between those who raised her and those she had been stolen from for so long.

“It doesn’t heal now. I’m still hurting. When you’re reaching out to my child, that is my child,” Shanara said in court in May. “I am your mother, Kamiyah! I am your mother.”

• It was the scandal that rocked America’s most storied political family and changed the course of presidential history. PEOPLE‘s first-ever podcast, Cover-Up, dives into the Chappaquiddick scandal and attempts to piece together what happened in the hours after Ted Kennedy’s car went over a narrow wooden bridge, killing his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. Subscribe now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play or wherever podcasts are available.

Of her enduring heartache — each year buying a cake to mark another passing birthday for her missing daughter, Shanara said, “I always thought about my baby every day, every day, every day. I would catch myself in my car crying, in bed crying, taking a bath crying, doing something with her siblings and crying.”

While on the stand during a two-day hearing in May, Williams apologized to Kamiyah’s parents and told her, “I never meant to cause you any harm, any pain, any of that,” according to WJAX.

In the months since Williams’ arrest, Kamiyah has acknowledged the wrongfulness of what was done to her as a baby while also continuing to note that, even if she was raised by her abductor, she was raised in a loving and seemingly normal household.

“From that one mistake, I was given the best life. I was,” Kamiyah said last year. “I had everything I ever needed, wanted. I had love especially. I understand what she did was wrong, but just don’t lock her up and throw away the key like everything she did was just awful.”

Kamiyah, now 19, did not attend Friday’s sentencing but had asked for leniency for Williams, according to her attorney.

“Kamiyah is now processing what it means for the woman she’s known as mother to receive an 18-year prison sentence,” Justin Bamberg said, the Post & Courier reports. “However, she understands Gloria had to be held accountable for her actions. She also understands that her biological parents have the absolute right to view today as a joyous day.”

Kamiyah’s mother, however, had asked at least for the maximum possible term of 22 years in prison. If she had her way, Shanara said, Williams would have been put to death.

In a statement, Williams’ attorney Diana Johnson said they had “hoped for” a lighter sentence but nonetheless “appreciate the time and attention Judge Aho took to fully consider this matter,” according to ABC News.

Johnson said Williams was also thankful for “everyone involved in her defense as well as all of the people who either wrote letters or appeared on her behalf.”

Kamiyah’s father, Craig Aiken, told reporters after the sentencing that, with it resolved, “We can continue on our journey of healing together as a family and support our daughter on her decision making.”

Kamiyah’s mother did not comment after court, according to news reports, though others of her biological relatives expressed their joy.

According to the Post & Courier, Kamiyah still lives in Walterboro but spends time with her family in Jacksonville

After Friday’s hearing, her grandmother Velma Aiken reportedly said: “I can love my grandbaby as my own now.”

Tracy Reese Teams With Artist Mel Chin for Art Project Designed to Raise Awareness of Flint’s Water Crisis

EVERY LAST DROP: Conceptual artist Mel Chin recruited Tracy Reese to create a fashion element for his retrospective “All Over the Place” at the Queens Museum in New York.
Coproduced by the public art-focused nonprofit No Longer Empty, the exhibition will feature 70-plus examples of his work — drawings, paintings, sculpture, installations and videos. Running through Aug. 7, the multilocation show will include sites in Times Square and the Broadway-Lafayette subway station. Adept at revealing environmental and socioeconomic systems and injustices, Chin recruited the Detroit-born Reese for “Flint Fit,” a fashion project designed to magnify the water crisis in Flint, Mich.
At Chin’s suggestion, 90,000 used water bottles were collected by Flint residents, who continue to use bottled water for everyday purposes more than three years after lead-contaminated water became a citywide problem. Once shipped to Unifi in Greensboro, N.C., the bottles were shredded and converted into fabric. Reese then designed a water-inspired collection that included rainwear and swimwear. About 14 women at the St. Luke N.E.W. Center produced the nine looks, which will be unveiled in a fashion event Sunday in the museum’s Watershed Gallery.
Chin and Reese had never met before last summer, when he approached her about the prospect. “We

NFL Player And Wife Skip Wedding Gifts And Raise Money For Rescue Animals Instead

NFL player and dog lover Logan Ryan used his wedding as an opportunity to say “I do” to a cause he and his wife are passionate about ― animal rescue.

When the Tennessee Titans cornerback tied the knot with Ashley Bragg on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia in April, they asked their guests to donate to Help Animal Welfare in St. Lucia (HelpAWS) ― a foster-based organization dedicated to rescuing, spaying and neutering stray dogs and cats and finding them forever homes ― in lieu of giving wedding gifts.

Dog rescue is with us wherever we go,” Ryan told The Dodo. “It’s just something we’re passionate about and want to make a difference in any way we can.”

Leading up to the big day, guests had been asking the couple what they wanted for a wedding present. At first, Ryan and Bragg just told them to donate to their local animal shelters. But once they heard about HelpAWS, they directed their family and friends to donate there instead.

The idea came to them the day after their intimate nuptials when the bride and groom put on their wedding clothes once again to take some photos around the town of Soufrière. That’s where they ran into a friendly stray pup, who instantly took a liking to the couple.

Charlene Penney, founder of HelpAWS, told HuffPost that the chance encounter with the pup (pictured above) is what connected the newlywed couple with her organization.

“While visiting the town, they saw how many stray dogs were wandering the streets,” she said. “After their photo shoot, they left wondering what is being done on the island to help stray animals and what they could do to help. So they asked their photographer about local rescue groups and that’s how they found us.”

Penney said they were able to find the dog from the photo shoot and rescued her shortly after the newlyweds had left the island. They named the dog “Logan” in the groom’s honor. Though Logan has some health issues, including tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis, Penney told HuffPost she is confident the dog will be ready for adoption soon.

“With the money [the Ryans] raised we were able to cover most of her medical expenses and we were also able to spay and neuter 11 cats we have in our care,” Penney added.

In 2015, Ryan and Bragg launched a social media initiative called Ryan’s Monthly Rescue with the goal of helping dogs, especially pit bulls, get adopted. The pair are parents to a baby girl named Avery, who attended the wedding, and two dogs, Nala and Leo, who were unable to be there.

“Our love of dogs may have been the only thing missing from our big day,” the bride told The Dodo. “The fact that we connected with HelpAWS and helped this one particular dog made the entire experience even more unforgettable.”

A post shared by Logan Ryan (@realloganryan) on

Penney said she is grateful to the couple for bringing both money and awareness to her organization.

“We have developed a close relationship with the Ryans. Ashley is even coming back to St. Lucia in the fall to help volunteer at our next spay and neuter clinic,” she told HuffPost. “We can’t wait!”

For more information on adopting a pet through HelpAWS, check out their website or Facebook page. If you’re interested in donating to the cause, you can do that here.

‘Noodled,’ a Photographic Study, to Raise Funds for Ocean Protection

WATER WORLD: Hairstylist James Pecis and art director Kimberley Norcott are among the creatives behind a limited-edition, hard-covered tome entitled “Noodled.” It is a photographic study of beauty inspired by nature. All of the proceeds from the sale of the 84-page book will be given to Mission Blue, an ocean protection organization.
In “Noodled,” black-and-white pictures of people are juxtaposed with colored images of water. A rolling wave is set by the portrait of a woman with a curlicue on her forehead, echoing the form of the watery swell. And undulating tresses are reflected in choppy seas, for instance.

Norcott was behind the art direction of “Noodled,” while Pecis styled the models’ hair for it. The portraits were snapped by Paul Wetherell and ocean images lensed by Ben Bugden. Athena Paginton was behind the models’ makeup, and the casting was overseen by Shelley Durkan.
“Noodled” — coming out in a run of 2,000 copies — will be introduced in mid-April in select stores and online at accidentalism.com. It is self-published.

‘Nasty Women’ Art Shows Raise Over $50,000 For Planned Parenthood

Nearly 700 “Nasty Women” artists teamed up to protest President-elect Donald Trump earlier this month, contributing to an exhibition responding to his infamous debate barb.

The show, co-organized by New York-based artist Roxanne Jackson, featured “nasty”-related works priced at $ 100 or less ― all of which were sold to benefit Planned Parenthood. The pieces were on view from Jan. 12 through Jan. 15, at Queens’ Knockdown Center, and, over the course of three days, sold out, raising $ 42,500, according to Jackson.

The NYC version of “Nasty Women” is but one of several shows planned in various cities across the country. As Jackson explained in an email to The Huffington Post, a “Nasty” show in Phoenix, Arizona, that opened on Jan. 14 sold out of over 200 works in the opening night alone, raising $ 11,000 for Planned Parenthood.

In total, the “Nasty” organizers have raised over $ 50,000 for the nonprofit organization devoted to reproductive health services ― and counting. The significant contribution is timely. Trump has expressed a desire to defund Planned Parenthood and “punish” women for having abortions.

Jackson originally posted a callout for a “Nasty Women” group show on Nov. 14, 2016. “Hello female artists/curators! Let’s organize a NASTY WOMEN group show!!! Who’s interested???” she wrote, tagging women artists, curators and writers in her circle.

Soon after posting, the message went viral as artist after artist responded to and passed on the message. “I had no idea how much this would escalate and evolve,” Jackson explained to HuffPost in a previous interview. Within the first hour of posting, she had 300 responses. Jackson’s team accepted every work offered after that and, as a result, they acquired approximately 1,000 pieces by the time submissions closed.

“This show isn’t necessarily about highlighting individual artists,” Jackson explained. “It’s about female-identifying artists coming together against the Trump regime.”

There are currently almost 30 “Nasty Happenings” scheduled for the next two months, located mostly in American cities with a few shows set abroad. On the official “Nasty Women” website, Jackson and her team invite artists interested in organizing their own “Nasty Women” show to add their own dates, providing instructions with only one caveat: all shows adopting the “Nasty” name must donate their proceeds to an organization benefiting women’s rights.
