H&M Responds to Union Rally Outside of Herald Square Flagship in New York

About 100 union activists, sales associates and elected officials rallied outside of H&M’s Herald Square flagship Wednesday afternoon calling for a fair new contract.
If the gigantic inflatable rat with an “Empower Workers” sign wasn’t enough of a clue to passersby, activists wore red T-shirts imprinted with Local 1102 Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. At times chanting “Union, union” and “Stand Up, Fight Back,” supporters cheered intermittently, holding signs that read, “Bad Pay Is Out of Fashion,” and “H&M Clopenings Can Kill.” Curtailing “clopening’s” — the practice of having an employee close a store at night and open the same location the following day — is one of the demands union members are asking of H&M management. They are also negotiating for guaranteed hours for part-timers, dental and vision benefits for workers, the right to time off after five consecutive days worked and longevity increases for employees with three years or more of tenure.
Having met with H&M representatives earlier Wednesday and with other meetings scheduled for later, Alvin Ramnarain, president of the Local 1002 of the RWDSU, said he doesn’t expect the matter to be resolved quickly. Answering a few questions, while the band Larry & the Larrytones warmed up the

With only 2 percent of schools open, and electricity still a problem for most of Puerto Rico, Boyer said of the upcoming fund-raiser: “It felt important. It felt that it needed to happen.”
The roster of participants includes Inez & Vinoodh, Bibi Cornejo-Borthwick, Curtis Kulig, Tim Barber, Petra Collins, Daniel Shea, Lachlan Bailey, Dan Martensen, Jay Miriam, Meriem Bennani, Paul Wackers, Chad Moore, Signe Pierce, Daniel Arnold and Joe Garvey. Donations will also be accepted at the door with NY4PR aiming to raise upwards of $ 60,000, Boyer said.

Joe Corré Speaks About London Punk Memorabilia Burning Rally

CORRE’S CAUSE: “Punk is dead. It’s time to think about something else,” said Joe Corré at a news conference in London, ahead of a ritual burning of the era’s memorabilia. The son of punk royalty Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, Corré is pumped up for Saturday’s rally, which will see more than five million pounds, or $ 7 million, worth of memorabilia turn to ashes in Camden, north London.
Corré, who founded the high-end lingerie brand Agent Provocateur with his then wife Serena Rees, is asking other punk fans to meet him and let go of their belongings from the era at the burning ceremony on Nov 26. The date coincides with the 40th anniversary of the release of the Sex Pistols’ debut single “Anarchy in the U.K.” Corré’s father McLaren managed the group, and is considered the godfather of the movement.
Corré decided to stage a rally after reading about Punk London, an ongoing celebration of punk’s 40-year anniversary, with musical gigs, talks, and exhibitions. Corré penned an open letter to the anniversary’s organizers, asking: “Who’s really behind this thing? The Heritage Lottery fund? The Mayor? Where is all this money going? Is it going to support the homeless? The fund for

Strangers Rally Together To Rescue Teen Driver Trapped In Flipped-Over SUV In River

These teens are lucky to be alive.

Three young men, ages 16 and 17, were in an SUV, speeding down a highway in Salt Lake City last Thursday, according to Fox13. In an attempt to avoid cars that were stopped at a traffic light, the driver swerved around the other vehicles and crashed into the Jordan River, with the truck landing on its roof, Deseret News reported.

“I saw it. The vehicle exploded in front of me right there, just pieces and parts. It’s like nothing you would see in your entire life,” witness Brian Adams told Fox13 of the wreck.

Strangers then jumped into the river, flipped the SUV over and helped save the teens.

We have three teenage boys that went to the hospital. It would have been entirely different if those people hadn’t been here,” Lt. Brian Burvis of the Salt Lake City Police Department told ABC4.

When the truck crashed, a couple ran to the river and fished the passengers out, according to the outlet. More people started piling in the water to help save the teen driver, who was stuck behind the steering wheel, and had been underwater for a few minutes, KUTV reported.

The bystanders were able to turn the truck over to its upright position to get the driver above water, while the fire department was able to remove the teen from the vehicle, the outlet reported.

Ten people jumped down into the water. Just bystanders that saw it happen, just flipped it over so that he wouldn’t die,” Adams told ABC4 of the effort to save the driver.

The three teens were brought to the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery, thanks, in part, to the strangers’ teamwork.

It was just very, very lucky,” Burvis told Deseret News.
