21-Year-Old with ‘Paralyzed Stomach’ from Rare Condition Fights for Cure with ‘Pie Face Challenge’

Andrew Belliveau, of Lynn, Massachusetts, was just 10 years old when he was diagnosed with gastroparesis, a condition that he says left his “stomach paralyzed,” causing him to starve from the inside out.

“I was so young at the time so I didn’t even understand what the doctor was saying. We’d never even heard of this, it was so shocking at the time,” Belliveau, 21, tells PEOPLE. “I had just started middle school and I came down with what I thought was your normal stomach bug, but as the weeks progressed it kept getting worse.”

Gastroparesis, or delayed gastric emptying, slows movement of food from the stomach through the digestive tract. Symptoms include nausea and severe vomiting. Belliveau says the condition is like living with the flu virus each day and “as much as you want to eat, your body is not allowing you to.”

“I had to force myself to eat, knowing I’d vomit it up a few hours later. I’d just hoped for the best, that I’d absorb any nutrients that I could. You pay the price for eating. It’s like you’re trapped inside your own body tying to get nutrients. You’re always hungry.”

Although most people with the illness are tube-fed, with some even starving to death, Belliveau says he has been fortunate enough to get a gastric stimulator — which he says eases his symptoms and allows him to eat normally as it functions like a “pacemaker for your stomach.”

Belliveau has been able to help bring awareness to the condition and to other people who suffer from the illness. He recently started the Gastroparesis Pie Face Challenge to raise awareness of the condition, encouraging people to take a pie to the face and donate to G-PACT, a non-profit organization that supports people with gastroparesis.

“I was like, ‘Maybe I can have my own Ice Bucket Challenge,’ ” he tells PEOPLE, noting that he was inspired by HASBRO’s “Pie Face!” game. “I was determined to get it off the ground.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

And he did. Athletes including Boston Red Sox players David Price, Brock Holt, Rick Porcello and more have taken part in the challenge. Their support is extra special to Belliveau, who says he loves to play baseball.

“To see these athletes take part in the challenge is something that truly means a lot to me,” he tells PEOPLE. “They’re inspirations for me to keep going and keep fighting through my illness. Baseball was kind of like my escape throughout it all, so to see them actually take part and help me in my effort … it’s really remarkable.”

He says he’s received messages from gastroparesis patients from around the world, many whom have credited Belliveau for giving them hope.

“Just hearing people, and receiving messages, saying, ‘You’ve given me newfound hope or you’re making my life easier or I thought I was alone,’  It’s just really cool to see how I’ve united millions of people,” Belliveau tells PEOPLE.

Amy Adams and Darren Le Gallo Show Rare PDA on the Red Carpet Before She Receives a Big Award

On Friday, Amy Adams was presented with the 31st American Cinematheque Award in Beverly Hills, California, and she was all smiles as she walked the red carpet with her husband Darren Le Gallo.

Wearing an elegant full-length, one-shoulder dress with flower details along the top, Adams, 43, was spotted kissing her husband — whom she married in 2016 after nearly 15 years together — before receiving the night’s only award.

The annual event honors an artist for their body of work, and past winners have included Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.

Adams was also accompanied by additional members of her family, including three of her seven siblings.

“My life, as much as you guys see me in these moments, is very family oriented,” Adams told PEOPLE on the red carpet ahead of the event. “To bring them in reminds me of sort of who I really am outside of what people’s perception is of me. I think that’s really important to me.”

Later in the evening during her speech, Adams gushed about two of the night’s other celebrity guests: Kristen Stewart and Natalie Portman.

Adams revealed that she felt very uncool compared with Stewart, 27, when the two women filmed the 2010 movie On the Road.

“Kristen, I remember that porch. Now you’re like, ‘Oh my God, she was so cool,’ I wasn’t. I was lactating,” Adams said. “Here is, she’s like cool and smoking and I was like, lactating through my dress. They were like, ‘It’s cool, you can do that in this because you’re addicted to Benzos, and it’s cool if you lactate.’ So I’m trying to be cool with these young girls, and I’m not. I think you get the picture.”

However, Adams also went on to call Stewart “such a brilliant talent and so unique to herself….she’s one of those women that I hold in high esteem.”

But Adams’ most enthusiastic praise was reserved for Portman.

“Natalie, when I think about you, it’s such a shame about your face,” Adams teased. “I’m just saying I feel bad for you.”

“But in all seriousness,” she continued. “I haven’t had the opportunity to work with her. I first got to know her though Mike Nichols, who I love dearly, and who loved Natalie dearly, and would tell me stories about Natalie, his Natalie. And I fell in love with her through his eyes.”

“Then I got to know her through these press tours that we do together. And sometimes it’s challenging, but with Natalie, every time she laughed, it lifted my spirit. And we don’t get to see that often, but Natalie has the most infectious and beautiful laugh, and she laughs often, and she laughs freely, and I thank her for that, because it really helps those long days,” the Nocturnal Animals star continued.

And Portman wasn’t shy about returning the love. “Enchanted is not just the title of a movie in which Amy Adams plays a princess,” Portman said. “It’s also describes the effect she has on us.”

VIDEO: Wild Somali Baby Asses Are Super Rare, Totally Precious and a First for the Dallas Zoo

All jokes aside about their name, we are getting quite a kick out of the Dallas Zoo’s new — also exceedingly rare and critically endangered — Somali wild ass babies.

On Tuesday, the zoo introduced its two new residents, half-sisters Kalila and Naima, on Facebook. The beautiful, bucking girls were born just 10 days apart to mama wild asses Liberty and Hani. Their father, Abai, was brought over in 2005 from the Basel Zoo in Switzerland to help bring a new bloodline of asses to the U.S.

“This is a big moment for our hoofstock team. Somali wild asses are critically endangered with less than 600 left in the wild,” said mammal curator John Fried in the zoo’s recent press release. “Only nine institutions in the U.S. care for this rare species, and to be able to welcome two babies is truly one of the highlights of my career.”

Kalila, whose name means “dearly loved” in Arabic, was born on July 9 to 13-year-old Liberty, while Naima, whose name means “calm” was born on July 19 to first-time mom Hani, who is 5 years old. The animals are herbivores and have a life expectancy of 40 years.

“These little girls have brought so much excitement to our hoofstock barn,” said mammal supervisor Christine Rickel in the press release. “Although they were born 10 days apart, they look vastly different. We joke that Liberty has super milk because Kalila’s already a big girl. She was born weighing 65 pounds – 14 pounds heavier than Naima.”

The moms and foals were introduced to each other last week, but the mothers are protective of their babies. Thus far they are hesitant to let their little ones play together, preferring that the energetic foals find their footing (i.e. run around in circles!) on their own.

Somali wild asses are native to the Horn of Africa: Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea. Their numbers have drastically dwindled for a number of reasons, including competition with other livestock for limited land and water supplies, crossbreeding with domestic asses and the local traditions of hunting this unique species for food and medicine. (Some believe the animals’ fat treats tuberculosis.)

With beautifully Zebra-esque striped legs, soft gray fur, a white belly and spiky black-and-gray manes, these asses stand out from the wild equid pack. They are also the smallest of the equids, standing at 4 ft. at the shoulder and weighing about 600 lbs. in adulthood. Their hooves, which are also the smallest of the equids, help them navigate steep, rocky terrain.

Zookeeper Laura Frazier caught the behind-the-scenes, playful moments of these wild little ladies and their moms in the video above, but you can see them for yourself from the zoo’s Adventure Safari monorail.

Fiona the Hippo May Not Be the Cincinnati Zoo’s Cutest Newborn Anymore — Meet Kendi the Rare Baby Rhino!

It’s raining adorable newborns at the Cincinnati Zoo.

The zoo, home to social media superstar Fiona the baby hippo, recently welcomed an eastern black rhino calf.

Seyia the mama rhino gave birth to Kendi on Monday morning, the zoo shared in a press release, the first eastern black rhino calf born at the zoo since 1999.

The mother rhino, who waited 15 months to give birth, was quick to dote on her first child. Cameras in her private enclosure captured Kendi’s birth and the calf’s first moments with mom, which included Kendi’s first steps.

Obviously, Kendi is a quick learner and is sure to pose some friendly competition for current zoo darling Fiona regarding the title “Most Precious Zoo Newborn.” The calf is also an important addition to the overall animal kingdom.

“Every rhino calf born is incredibly important for the population, which includes fewer than 60 in North America. Calves will stay with their mothers for 3-4 years which means that the average female can only have one calf every 5 years,” Christina Gorsuch, curator of mammals at the Cincinnati Zoo, said in the zoo’s release.

Ignorant to all the buzz surrounding its birth, Kendi has spent the past 24 hours enjoying quality time with mom. Zookeepers have given the family their space to bond, so they have not had the opportunity to confirm the sex of the calf.

The name Kendi, which was chosen by the zoo’s staff, means “the loved one” in Swahili.

If there is one certainty about Kendi’s future, it is that the calf will be loved by all it meets.

Rare Green Puppy Born to Golden Retriever (See the Pics!)

Grass. Frogs. Avocados. Emeralds. Shamrocks. Broccoli. The Incredible Hulk. Puppies? One of these things is definitely not like the others!

According to The Sun U.K., one lucky green puppy was recently born to a Golden Retriever named Rio in the town of Golspie in the Scottish Highlands.

The pup was named “Forest” by her owner, Louise Sutherland, due to her uniquely colored fur. Forest is one of nine puppies, all the rest of whom have completely normal fur.

“The first pup was stuck, so myself and my daughter Claire managed to free him and pull him out safely,” Sutherland told The Sun. “It was all hands on deck but then as the puppies started to arrive, we noticed that one of the puppies had green fur. We couldn’t believe it.”

Sutherland had every right to be stunned: the occurrence is so rare, it’s only known to have happened three other times. According to a 2014 article in TIME, veterinarians believe that exposure to biliverdin — a green bile pigment found in the placenta — may be the cause.

“The color has faded quite a bit already and will be gone soon, I’m told,” said Sutherland, and the TIME story backs this up. Apparently the condition tends to resolve itself within a few weeks.

Diana Ross Shares ‘Endless Love’ With Her Fans During Rare NYC Performance

Ain’t no mountain high enough to keeping Diana Ross from connecting with her die-hard fans.

On Monday, the legendary singer kicked off a rare five-night engagement at Manhattan’s New York City Center. Appearing before a sold-out crowd, Ross performed a selection of hits from her 50-plus-year career, including “Baby Love,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Upside Down,” “Love Hangover” “The Boss,” “It’s My Turn” and “Endless Love.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has had other memorable performances in the Empire State, such as her one-woman show on Broadway in 1976 and her 1983 concert in Central Park. She told those in attendance Monday, including HuffPost, that her return to the city was euphoric.

“Thank you for such a wonderful welcome back home,” she said. “I have endless memories … so many memories. You know, Central Park … and it’s so lovely to see your faces like this. Thank you.”

Prior to taking the stage on Monday night, Ross spoke to BroadwayWorld.com about performing at age 73.

“What I receive each night that I perform is the joy of being able to do what I am very passionate about,” she said. “It feels as if it’s my purpose. I really have such [a] great time with all this, especially when I am in a place of fun and good vibrations.”

She echoed those sentiments to her adoring fans on Monday evening, adding that she had less than a day to rehearse with her band in the New York venue.

“I kind of wanted to tell you that we all just piled in here today, because yesterday we couldn’t get in the room,” she announced during the show. “So today we got in here quickly and we had a really quick sound check, so I’m hoping that the sound was OK for you. I know I had a lot of fun!”

The special limited New York engagement comes on the heels of Ross’ February residency at The Venetian Las Vegas, and precedes her forthcoming headlining performance at this year’s annual Essence Festival.

Diana Ross’ five-night engagement at the New York City Center runs through April 29. For more info, head to the New York City Center website.

Janet Jackson Makes Rare Appearance After Split from Wissam Al Mana

Two days after multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE Janet Jackson and Wissam Al Mana are ending their marriage, the singer was spotted publicly for the first time running errands in London.

“Janet was out on her own at a shop on King’s Road,” says a source about the quick outing on Monday. “It’s really unusual to see her out of the house because she hardly seems to venture out at all.”

Since delivering the couple’s baby boy, Eissa, in January, the star has largely remained holed up at home. “Apart from a few people, she hasn’t really had any visitors,” says the source.

Al Mana, 42, was spotted leaving the former couple’s home Tuesday afternoon. “After the baby was born, Wissam was at the house all the time, but in the past month, he’s barely been there at all,” adds the source.

A Jackson family insider previously told PEOPLE the entertainer, 50, and her billionaire businessman husband separated shortly after welcoming their first child together.

“They come from very different worlds,” said the family insider. “The cultural differences between her and Wissam became even more obvious after the baby was born.”

Kim Kardashian Makes Rare Appearance To Give Friend’s Baby Boys A ‘First Kiss’

These days, it takes a very special occasion for Kim Kardashian to leave her home and join the world of social media.

But being the doting friend she is, the reality star has come out of her self-imposed seclusion to meet the newborn twins of her good friend and makeup artist, Joyce Bonelli.

Kardashian made a visit to the hospital where Bonelli was staying on Friday to give the baby boys their “first kiss” and pose for a series of black-and-white photos, which Bonelli compiled into an adorable Instagram video.

“ The Boys ‘First Kiss’ From Auntie KiKi @kimkardashian WELOVEYEEWW❤ #BonelliTavernitiTwins #ILOVEMYFAMILY ,” the make-up artist to the stars wrote.

Kardashian has slowly begun to step back into the public eye since she was robbed at gunpoint in her Paris apartment in October. Just this week, she made an appearance at the family’s annual Christmas party, posing for the camera in her sisters’ many Snapchats and Instagram photos throughout the night.

A few days later, husband Kanye West took to Twitter to share the family’s holiday portrait with children North and Saint, which has put divorce rumors surrounding the couple to rest, for now at least.

Let’s just hope 2017 is a bit kinder to the Kardashian family.

The Duchess of Cambridge Makes Rare Public Speech

HEALTH CHECK: The Duchess of Cambridge attended a Place2Be Headteacher conference in London and made a rare public speech on the topic of mental health issues.
A royal patron of the Place2Be charity, she spoke to teachers and leaders from schools across England, Scotland and Wales late Wednesday about ways to help children with mental health issues.
“I often get asked why I decided to spend time highlighting the mental health of children,” she said. “I imagine my answer might be similar to many of yours. I know that I was lucky. My parents and teachers provided me with a wonderful and secure childhood where I always knew I was loved, valued and listened to. But of course many children are not so lucky. Since beginning my work in areas like addiction, for example, I have seen time and time again that the roots of poor mental health in adulthood are almost always present in unresolved childhood challenges.”
She wore a gray Matthew Williamson shift dress with a jeweled neckline and cuff, an outfit she had sported in 2012 to a London premiere of “African Cats” for the Tusk Trust Benefit.
Earlier this week, the duchess also attended the 2015 Fostering Excellence Awards in BMA

Eddie Murphy Nails Bill Cosby Joke In Rare Stand-Up Set

Eddie Murphy delivered a rare stand-up set with the very thing he didn’t want to do a few months ago: a Bill Cosby joke.

Murphy received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center on Sunday night, where he took to the stage for his first stand-up performance in 28 years. Back in February, we learned via a tweet from former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Norm Macdonald that Murphy had declined to portray Cosby on the “SNL” 40th anniversary special, not wanting to “kick a man when he is down.”

But Murphy wasn’t holding back on Sunday. “Bill has one of these,” the Oscar-nominated comedian joked, referring to the Mark Twain bust that honorees receive. “Did you all make him give it back?” (Several universities have revoked Cosby’s honorary degrees in the wake of his numerous sexual abuse allegations.)

Murphy then morphed into Cosby’s sing-songy lilt, saying, “I would like to talk to some of the people who feel that I should give back some of my motherf**king trophies.” Continuing in his best “Pudding Pop” voice, a callback to his Cosby impression from his famous 1987 stand-up film ”Raw,” Murphy reportedly said, ”You may have heard recently that I allegedly put the pill in the people’s stomach … If I ever see or meet this Hannibal Buress in person, I am going to try and kill this man!”

Days earlier, Murphy had explained his decision not to do Cosby at the “SNL” anniversary tribute: ”There’s nothing funny about it,” he told The Washington Post. “If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you’re just hurting people.” But Arsenio Hall, who was at Sunday’s celebration, told the Post that Murphy discussed the potential Mark Twain bit with him and Chris Rock, eventually changing his tune. “[Murphy] said, ‘Because Cosby gonna get sick of this soon, he’s gonna get sick of people hating, and eventually he’s gonna have to say something,’” Hall said of Murphy’s decision. “And we were like, ‘That is funny, man. Are you willing?’”

You can see a snippet of the set around the 2:25 mark in this video from The Associated Press. A full broadcast of the event airs Nov. 23 on PBS.

Pierre Bergé to Auction Cache of Rare Books

BOOKISH TYPE: Pierre Bergé is to auction off his personal library, putting an initial cache of about 150 rare books under the hammer on Dec. 11 in Paris.
The former couture boss, 85, has amassed a collection of some 1,600 titles, including musical scores and manuscripts spanning six centuries. Six more auctions are to follow in 2016 and 2017.
Lots in the first sale, to be conducted by Pierre Bergé & Associés in collaboration with Sotheby’s at Drouot, range from the first edition of St. Augustine’s “Confessions,” printed around 1470, to William Burrough’s “Scrap Book 3” from 1979. Jean Cocteau’s “Le Requiem” from 1962 contains a personal dedication to Bergé and is estimated to fetch between 2,000 and 3,000 euros, or about $ 2,230 to $ 3,350 at current exchange rates.
Meanwhile, an autographed first edition of Gustave Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary” from 1857 and the original manuscript for his “Sentimental Education” could go for up to 600,000 euros, or $ 669,500.
A selection of about 60 works is to go on display at Sotheby’s in New York from Sept. 10-13, followed by showcases in Hong Kong from Oct. 2-7 and London from Nov. 6-9.

Cookie Lyon of Fox’s ‘Empire’ Sheds Rare Light on Black Women’s Incarceration and Reentry

Lee Daniels’s blockbuster Empire, an over-the-top soap opera featuring a prominent African American family in the rap world, has tackled a variety of subjects that most mainstream black shows fear to tread — such as homophobia and psychiatric illness.

Yet Cookie Lyon, the mother and ex-wife of the record label’s founder, sheds a rare light on black female incarceration and the challenges of prisoner reentry. Played by Taraji P. Henson, Cookie, is an old gangster with a heart of gold. She helped support her husband’s rap career and financed his fledging record label with $ 400,000 of drug money. When Cookie is arrested and goes down for seventeen years, her backstory shows that visits with her kids are infrequent and her old man just stops showing up.

True to Cookie’s storyline, in 2000, black women were incarcerated in federal and state prisons at a rate six times that of white women — with the War on Drugs responsible for a significant number of those arrests. Of course, contrary to Cookie the overwhelming majority were low-level addicts and drug mules. Roughly a decade later that rate has been cut by nearly 50 percent.

Unfortunately, the damage resulting from the nearly decade long apex of black female confinement is substantial.

Unlike Cookie’s character, because many of the black women in prison were single mothers at the time of their arrest, their children were displaced. Paralleling the prison system, in 2000, black children represented the largest group in foster care, despite being only 15 percent of children in the US. Because of mandatory parental termination laws after 15 months in care, a number of black mothers lost and remain at risk for losing their parent rights.

Still Cookie’s character also helps focus on another area of concern, namely the difficulties of prisoner reentry. The dysfunction in her relationship with Hakeem Lyon was both heartbreaking and hilarious — the scene where she beats him down with a broomstick for calling her a bitch comes to mind.

African American female prisoners face unique challenges trying to reintegrate into society and reconnect with their families. For starters, not only were roughly 60 percent of the women using drugs prior to their arrest, but 44 percent reported being physically or sexually abused and nearly 70 percent reported having been abused before the age of 18. Substance abuse issues and the fallout from emotional trauma are key factors, but also the women battle stiff employment obstacles, laws that make them ineligible for public assistance, a lack of healthcare and housing discrimination.

Currently, the recidivism rate for female offenders averages 45 percent. Lack of support and inadequate reentry programs are a huge factor, but so too is the intensifying parole regime, which has shifted from a rehabilitative model to one more closely aligned with law enforcement. In 1985, 70 percent of parolees successfully completed supervision, by 1997, that rate dropped to 44 percent.

Cookie Lyon’s character aside, we need to help more black women successfully reenter society. In order to do that reentry programs must tackle the social and economic challenges that this population faces and successful prisoner reentry has to become a much larger focus in the ongoing effort to arrest mass-incarceration.

Thieves of Book Row: New York’s Most Notorious Rare Book Ring and the Man Who Stopped It

Thieves of Book Row: New York’s Most Notorious Rare Book Ring and the Man Who Stopped It

No one had ever tried a caper like this before. The goods were kept in a secure room under constant scrutiny, deep inside a crowded building with guards at the exits. The team picked for the job included two old hands known only as Paul and Swede, but all depended on a fresh face, a kid from Pinetown, North Carolina. In the Depression, some fellows were willing to try anything-even a heist in the rare book room of the New York Public Library. In Thieves of Book Row, Travis McDade tells the gripping tale of the worst book-theft ring in American history, and the intrepid detective who brought it down. Author of The Book Thief and a curator of rare books, McDade transforms painstaking research into a rich portrait of Manhattan’s Book Row in the 1920s and ’30s, where organized crime met America’s cultural treasures in dark and crowded shops along gritty Fourth Avenue. Dealers such as Harry Gold, a tough native of the Lower East Side, became experts in recognizing the value of books and recruiting a pool of thieves to steal them-many of them unemployed men who drifted up the Bowery or huddled around fires in Central Park’s shantytowns. When Paul and Swede brought a new recruit into his shop, Gold trained him for the biggest score yet: a first edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems. Gold’s recruit cased the rare-book room for weeks, searching for a weakness. When he found one, he struck, leading to a breathtaking game of wits between Gold and NYPL special investigator G. William Bergquist. Both a fast-paced, true-life thriller, Thieves of Book Row provides a fascinating look at the history of crime and literary culture.

These Rare Photos From JFK And Jackie O.’s Wedding Were Found In A Darkroom

When John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953, one of their guests told a reporter from Life magazine that the wedding was “just like a coronation.”

Now a rare set of photos from their stunning Newport, Rhode Island affair is being shared with the public before they are auctioned off later this month.

Thirteen negatives, which are believed to be unpublished, were found in the home of freelance photographer Arthur Burges, a backup shooter for the occasion. His family uncovered the keepsakes in his darkroom after his death in 1993.

Boston-based RR Auction is selling the negatives in their original folder along with a set of prints made from those negatives on their website. Bidding began on September 26 and runs through October 15. You can check out some of those photos below or visit their website for more information:

Adele Gives Rare Glimpse Into Her Private Life, For A Good Cause

Adele has achieved international superstar status at the tender age of 20 but she has managed to keep her personal life almost entirely private in the five years since. Until now, that is.

Promoting World Water Day on Saturday, March 22, Adele posted a four photo collage to her Twitter account. The clues we can glean are few but precious: Adele has a small fish tank, Adele looks positively stunning without makeup, and Adele’s 17-month-old baby boy Angelo is growing up so fast!

Gwyneth Paltrow, Britney Spears, Bar Refaeli and Katy Perry have also endorsed the important cause, aimed to provide clean water to the 800 million people who lack access to it, on social media this weekend.

A Rare Titanic Family

A Rare Titanic Family

Of all the families that boarded the doomed ocean liner Titanic together in 1912, only one fourth arrived safely in New York together. Albert and Sylvia Caldwell and their 10-month-old son, Alden, were one of those rare Titanic families. A Rare Titanic Family draws on first-person accounts from Albert and Sylvia to tell the fascinating story of the young couple who had no intention of getting off the “unsinkable” Titanic. It was, as Sylvia had been told, a ship that God Himself could not sink. They were saved by a combination of luck, pluck, Alberts outgoing nature, Sylvias illness, and Aldens helplessness. Their detailed story of the short life of the Titanic and their lucky rescue aboard the ill-starred Lifeboat 13 has never been fully told in Titanic literature. A Rare Titanic Family includes a photo taken of them on deck an unusual surviving souvenir sent to them after the disaster. But the trip on the Titanic was only one part of a bigger nightmare for the Caldwells. Albert and Sylvia, idealistic young Presbyterian missionaries from the American Midwest, had set out to Bangkok, Siam, on the very day of their wedding in 1909, eager to serve God and see the world. But things went awry. In the end, they fled Bangkok in what they described as a desperate journey around the world to save Sylvias health. Fellow missionaries, however, believed that the couple had been plotting for some time to renege on their contract and contrive an excuse to go home early, at great financial loss to the church. The trip around the world thus developed into a grim game of cat and mouse, with the Caldwells as the prey. Not even the loss of the Titanic ended the hunt. A Rare Titanic Family follows all the true-life plot twists in the biographical account of a family who successfully fled aboard the Titanic but never could get out from under the shadow that the ship cast over them.
