Diane von Furstenberg Receives International Rescue Committee Freedom Award

Diane von Furstenberg was recognized by the International Rescue Committee on Thursday evening with the organization’s Freedom Award at its annual gala, the Rescue Dinner. The designer visited refugees in June at the IRC’s offices in Alexandria, Greece, where she met IRC staff members and Syrian refugees, who were recovering from traumas experienced on their journeys while trying to reunite with their families in Northern Europe.
Earlier this week, von Furstenberg visited the New York Resettlement Office to participate in a refugee business development workshop, where she met with a Congolese woman who is committed to starting an ice cream business.
The IRC notes they award the Freedom Award to “individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in support of refugees, and who have championed the cause of liberty, individual freedom and dignity. Diane von Furstenberg, a legend in the fashion industry, is a dedicated philanthropist and an outspoken advocate for vulnerable people.”
It has previously been awarded to the likes of Michael Bloomberg, Sen. John McCain, George Soros, Kofi Annan, Madeleine Albright and Winston Churchill.

Josie Natori Receives Honorary Degree From Manhattanville College, Tells Graduates to Embrace Change

AFTER SCHOOL WITH JOSIE: As the keynote speaker at this year’s undergraduate commencement at her alma mater Manhattanville College, Josie Natori was in for a few surprises.
Saturday’s stormy weather in New York caused the commencement to be moved indoors to the campus’ chapel where Natori had graduated 50 years ago. That morning-of change of plans was something she only learned about upon her arrival and the new location made the occasion even more memorable. “For me, selfishly, it was very nostalgic,” she said Monday.
Another surprise was the honorary degree that Manhattanville bestowed on the founder and chief executive officer of The Natori Company. “Of course, I burst into tears,” she said. Her former dean Elizabeth McCormack, who became president of the school in 1966, was in the crowd, as were Natori’s husband Ken and her son Kenneth. In her remarks, the designer said, “Change is the only constant — and right now, it happens in the blink of an eye. Embrace change or be left behind.”
Some of her other guideposts included:

You must love what you do. Because, if you don’t love it, you’re not going to succeed.
Be open to all possibilities and listen to your inner feelings.
Even in the darkest moments, something

HONG KONG — “Let me say, I think I’m a good dressmaker, but I’m not a very good talker,” said Yohji Yamomoto.
The Japanese designer was in Hong Kong at the Design for Asia gala dinner Friday night to accept a lifetime achievement award. Dressed in all black, he tipped his signature hat onstage as he collected the accolade, given to a figure who has demonstrated “visionary shaping designs across a variety of fields, and who uses design to educate and promote wider use of design in society.”
Although the 74-year-old designer has been a celebrated figure for many years — best known for his dark and avant-garde tailoring — he shared that the night held extra special meaning for him.
“In my long career, in design, architecture, [I’ve been to] so many parties, this is the very first time that I have such a warm feeling, I really appreciate this. Please let me become your family,” he said.

Patrizio Bertelli Receives Master Honoris Causa

CULTURE CLUB: Patrizio Bertelli has received a Master Honoris Causa from Centro Universitario di Organizzazione Aziendale Business School, which celebrates six decades in business. “We must leverage culture and education and not compromise with sterile pragmatism because without culture and education you go nowhere,” said Bertelli, chief executive officer of Prada SpA, receiving the honor at Altavilla Vicentina, outside of Vicenza, Italy, on Monday evening.
Federico Visentin, president of CUOA Business School, which each year counts around 10,000 students and has a total of 4,500 Master Alumni, emphasized the institution’s collaboration with more than 2,500 companies, of which 100 are partners and supporters.
Bertelli underscored that the Prada group counts 18 plants in Italy that produce directly through an integrated system. He said that the average age of its employees is 36 and that it counts 12,000 employees, of which 3,500 work in the plants in Italy. “We have become a mature company and our new challenge is to identify elements of innovation and renovation,” said the executive. “Culture and education must be placed before technology. Amy Adams and Darren Le Gallo Show Rare PDA on the Red Carpet Before She Receives a Big Award

On Friday, Amy Adams was presented with the 31st American Cinematheque Award in Beverly Hills, California, and she was all smiles as she walked the red carpet with her husband Darren Le Gallo.

Wearing an elegant full-length, one-shoulder dress with flower details along the top, Adams, 43, was spotted kissing her husband — whom she married in 2016 after nearly 15 years together — before receiving the night’s only award.

The annual event honors an artist for their body of work, and past winners have included Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.

Adams was also accompanied by additional members of her family, including three of her seven siblings.

“My life, as much as you guys see me in these moments, is very family oriented,” Adams told PEOPLE on the red carpet ahead of the event. “To bring them in reminds me of sort of who I really am outside of what people’s perception is of me. I think that’s really important to me.”

Later in the evening during her speech, Adams gushed about two of the night’s other celebrity guests: Kristen Stewart and Natalie Portman.

Adams revealed that she felt very uncool compared with Stewart, 27, when the two women filmed the 2010 movie On the Road.

“Kristen, I remember that porch. Now you’re like, ‘Oh my God, she was so cool,’ I wasn’t. I was lactating,” Adams said. “Here is, she’s like cool and smoking and I was like, lactating through my dress. They were like, ‘It’s cool, you can do that in this because you’re addicted to Benzos, and it’s cool if you lactate.’ So I’m trying to be cool with these young girls, and I’m not. I think you get the picture.”

However, Adams also went on to call Stewart “such a brilliant talent and so unique to herself….she’s one of those women that I hold in high esteem.”

But Adams’ most enthusiastic praise was reserved for Portman.

“Natalie, when I think about you, it’s such a shame about your face,” Adams teased. “I’m just saying I feel bad for you.”

“But in all seriousness,” she continued. “I haven’t had the opportunity to work with her. I first got to know her though Mike Nichols, who I love dearly, and who loved Natalie dearly, and would tell me stories about Natalie, his Natalie. And I fell in love with her through his eyes.”

“Then I got to know her through these press tours that we do together. And sometimes it’s challenging, but with Natalie, every time she laughed, it lifted my spirit. And we don’t get to see that often, but Natalie has the most infectious and beautiful laugh, and she laughs often, and she laughs freely, and I thank her for that, because it really helps those long days,” the Nocturnal Animals star continued.

And Portman wasn’t shy about returning the love. “Enchanted is not just the title of a movie in which Amy Adams plays a princess,” Portman said. “It’s also describes the effect she has on us.”

Mario Testino Receives Légion D’Honneur in Lima, Peru

MARIO’S MOMENT: The French government paid tribute to Mario Testino and his services to culture on Tuesday, awarding him the Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest civilian distinction.
Testino received the honor from the French ambassador to Peru, Fabrice Mauriès, during a small ceremony at the French residence in Lima where the photographer was born and raised.
“France is happy to show its recognition today to a person who contributes to the development of young Peruvians as well as to the appreciation of the art and cultural heritage of their nation,” said Mauriès, acknowledging Testino’s philanthropic contributions in Peru through his cultural foundation Museo Mate, as well as his creative work.
The recognition made Testino recall the earlier stages in his career when he worked for French language titles alongside Carine Roitfeld, crediting the country for helping him define his signature aesthetic.
“I found my style when working with Carine Roitfeld — first for French Glamour magazine, and then for French Vogue,” the photographer said. “Carine pushed me to go into the South American mode that I had developed in my nude photography, suggesting I apply this to my fashion work. At the time, I worked with a French team continuously — Tom Pecheux for makeup

Dog on Price is Right Receives Priceless Gift: A Forever Home

The ending line “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered” has been a signature of The Price is Right for decades.

But the show does more for animal rights than just support spay and neuter programs; the CBS daytime hit also helps find homes for pets.

Monday marks the start of Pet Adoption Week on The Price is Right, where lucky shelter pets get to show off for countless prospective pet parents on national TV.

The first featured pup, Trinket, has already found her forever home thanks to the show’s taping. The fluffy white dog with an adorable underbite is now the fur baby of Sherry Rehfeld, who knows this little cutie is priceless.

“I adopted Trinket the day after she appeared on the show. When she jumped in my lap I knew she chose me. I didn’t have a chance to say no. She is doing just fine. Loves to play and go for walks. She also loves car rides. Jumps in the car herself and lays in her bed as I drive across town. She is a very loving dog and is a healthy eater, loves her treats and is learning her commands. She will have a forever home here,” Rehfeld gushed, detailing what Trinket has been up to since appearing on the show.

Just because this cutie has a home, doesn’t mean there aren’t other pets who need you. Tune in to The Price Is Right on CBS all week to see more adorable animals looking to find a family to call their own.

After Being Denied 73 Years Ago, 92-Year-Old Black Woman Finally Receives Her Library Card

Ninety-two-year-old Pearl Thompson was a student at Shaw University in 1942 when she attempted to check out a book from the Olivia Raney Library in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her school, which is an HBCU, didn’t carry the book she needed for a history class so she visited the local library. According to her daughter, Deborah Thompson, Pearl was denied a library card because she was black, so instead, she was sent to the building’s basement to read the book.

“I expected to go in and get a book,” Pearl told News & Observer.

Seventy-three years later, Pearl returned to Raleigh with her daughter and granddaughter and finally got her library card.

“She was fighting good health but she was determined to make this trip,” Deborah told HuffPost. She said Pearl is currently battling kidney disease and suffers from heart issues — but she wouldn’t let that stop her.

The Olivia Raney Library was the city’s first public library and later became a part of the larger Wake County Public Library system. In the 1960’s, it merged with Richard B. Harrison Library — a library Deborah said Pearl helped to launch — which only served blacks at the time. The Olivia Raney Library, which is now closed, serves as a local history library and the administration at Cameron Village Library, which opened right after Olivia Raney Library closed, held a ceremony in Pearl’s honor last week.

“We all felt that the presentation of Mrs. Thompson’s library card needed to be honored with a ceremony and we also wanted the opportunity to rectify a mistake of the past,” Ann Burlingame, deputy director of Wake County Public Libraries, told The Huffington Post on Tuesday.

After college, Pearl, who has always been an advocate for education, went on to become a teacher in Raleigh for nearly fifty years.

“I was determined that when I became a teacher every child would have an opportunity to learn to read,” Pearl said at the ceremony. “A little boy [had] Down’s syndrome and they said he would never learn to read. And I taught him to read. Even to the point he wrote books himself.”

Thompson moved to Ohio with her husband after 12 years as a teacher in Raleigh, and she now lives in Cincinnati where she taught for 37 years. Decades after her days in college, she said she doesn’t hold a grudge against the library and their poor treatment.

“I don’t hold any kind of hate in my heart, because that doesn’t do it,” she said. “That doesn’t get you there.”

Kelli O’Hara Receives “Our Leading Lady” Award for 15 Years On Broadway (VIDEO)

SCROLL DOWN TO WATCH THE INTERVIEW AND SEE KELLI RECEIVE THE “OUR LEADING LADY” AWARD!

On Sunday, June 7, famed Broadway actress and fan favorite, Kelli O’Hara (who I profiled here, last year) was finally recognized by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing for her remarkable contributions to the stage, taking home her very first TONY Award following a total of six nominations over several years.

In the weeks leading up, fans took to social media with a fervor, debating who exactly should win for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. Many were in “Camp Kristin” for Chenoweth’s outstanding performance as Lily Garland in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of On The 20th Century. Others rooted for theater legend Chita Rivera and her performance as Claire Zachanassian in Kander and Ebb’s final musical, The Visit (which Rivera has said will likely be her final role on Broadway).

However, the support for O’Hara was fierce, and her fans were ultimately vindicated on TONY night as she received the award for her stunning and complex performance as Anna Leonowens in the Lincoln Center revival of The King and I.

Weeks before the TONY Awards, our team at Center On The Aisle (#COTA – the website I run in addition to contributing here on The Huffington Post) was also split, but peace came by acknowledging exactly what this incredible recognition represents. All three of these women were frontrunners, and deserved to win for different reasons. However, if the TONY Awards have a weakness, it’s that other than its Lifetime Achievement awards, they celebrate only a single performance–not the performer’s body of work and total contribution to the art form.

Realizing this, our team did a little research and found out that this year did not just bring Kelli her sixth nomination, her performance in The King and I marked a total of 15 years on Broadway, and her 10th Broadway show.

To acknowledge this, the #COTA team (with the help of a special celebrity guest included in the video below!) decided to take matters into our own hands and recognize Kelli O’Hara for all of these incredible performances (whether she won the TONY Award or not), which collectively have made her one of the most recognizable and talented actresses on stage today.

Check out the video below to see me present Kelli with Center On The Aisle’s first ever award, titled “Our Leading Lady.”

Kanye West Receives Honorary Doctorate From School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago

Kanye West might be a college dropout, but now he has an advanced degree.

The rapper received an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) Monday for his “transformative, genre-defying work.” In his acceptance speech, he described what the honor means to him.

“This honor is gonna make your lives easier,” he said. “Two reasons: You don’t have to defend me as much and I’m going to make all of our lives easier. And it’s these Floyd Mayweather belts that are needed to prove what I’ve been saying my entire life. Whether it’s the cosign of Paul McCartney grabbing me and saying, ‘It’s okay he doesn’t bite white people.’ Or The New York Times cover. Or the Time ‘Most Influential’ cover. And now, a doctorate at the Art Institute of Chicago.”

“When I was giving a lecture at Oxford,” he continued, “I brought up this school because when I went on that mission to create in other spaces — apparel, film, performance — it would have been easier if I could have said I had a degree at the Art Institute of Chicago.”

Lisa Wainwright, dean of faculty and vice president of academic administration at SAIC, told the Los Angeles Times that it had decided to give West the honorary degree after he publicly mentioned the school.

“I read it and thought, ‘Wow, this is a fantastic moment.’ Here is this major figure in the cultural landscape promoting art school, this guy from Chicago saying art school is cool. So we thought, ‘This man deserves an honorary doctorate from us!’ He should have gone here.”

Kim Kardashian, who is currently in Brazil on business, commemorated her husband’s milestone with an Instagram post.

Dr. Kanye West!!!!!!! I’m so proud of you baby & I know your mom would be so proud too!!!!

West attended Chicago’s American Academy of Art for one semester on a partial scholarship before transferring to Chicago State University, where his mother, Donda West, was head of the English Department, according to Rolling Stone. After one semester there, he dropped out to pursue his music career. And the rest is history.

Seattle Campus-Shooting Hero Receives Flood Of Donations For Wedding Registry

SEATTLE (AP) — People have donated more than $ 22,000 in less than a day through an online fundraiser for the student who thwarted a shooting at a small Seattle university.

Jon Meis and other students stopped the gunman Thursday at Seattle Pacific University. Meis has been credited with pepper-spraying and pinning the gunman while he was reloading his shotgun.

Soon after Meis was identified, praise began to pour out on social media sites. Someone found Meis’ wedding registry, and people quickly bought out the gifts listed.

That’s when sports radio producer Jessamyn McIntyre got the idea to begin a GoFundMe site for Meis and his fiancé’s honeymoon and future. The site quickly went viral.

According to the page’s statistics, more than 700 donations have come in as of Saturday afternoon — tallies that are expected to increase.

McIntyre said she hasn’t had direct contact with the Meis family, who has asked for privacy. But she has left them her contact information. She also contacted university officials.

McIntyre will leave the fundraising page up for a week, unless the family asks her to take it down, she said.

On the donations page, people continue praising Meis. One person posted, “Only one word needed: Inspiring,” to go with a $ 20 donation.

A 26-year-old suspect was charged after the shooting that left a 19-year-old man dead and two other young people wounded. The quick action by Meis likely saved lives, police said.
