Roc-A-Fella Records Cofounder Kareem ‘Biggs’ Burke to Launch 14 Capsule Collections Nationwide

Kareem “Biggs” Burke is executive producing a new type of project.
The cofounder of Roc-A-Fella records is overseeing the simultaneous drop of 14 Roc96 collections at 14 specialty stores throughout the U.S. starting in December. Each collection is inspired by a different song from “Reasonable Doubt,” Jay Z’s debut album that turned 20 this year.
“I was trying to do one drop a month and obviously there are 14 songs and there aren’t 14 months in a year, so we decided to consolidate it,” said Burke, who tasked his design team with thoroughly listening to the album before creating the collection. The line, which retails from $ 25 to $ 145, features T-shirts, hoodies, hats, beanies and reprinted “Reasonable Doubt” cassettes. The assortment has graphics and messaging that riff off of lyrics from the classic album.
The Foundation Showroom is handling the distribution of the collection, which will be available on Dec. 4, Jay Z’s 47th birthday, at the following stores: Social Status locations in Pennsylvania and North Carolina; A Ma Maniere in Atlanta; Feature in Las Vegas; Woodstack in Brooklyn; Politics in New Orleans; Creme in Norfolk, Va.; Xhibition in Cleveland; Corporate in Cincinnati; Ubiq in Philadelphia; Concepts in Manhattan and Boston; Soho Gallery in

Information Discovery on Electronic Health Records

Information Discovery on Electronic Health Records

Exploiting the rich information found in electronic health records (EHRs) can facilitate better medical research and improve the quality of medical practice. Until now, a trivial amount of research has been published on the challenges of leveraging this information. Addressing these challenges, Information Discovery on Electronic Health Records explores the technology to unleash the data stored in EHRs. Assembling a truly interdisciplinary team of experts, the book tackles medical privacy concerns, the lack of standardization for the representation of EHRs, missing or incorrect values, and the availability of multiple rich health ontologies. It looks at how to search the EHR collection given a user query and return relevant fragments from the EHRs. It also explains how to mine the EHR collection to extract interesting patterns, group entities to various classes, or decide whether an EHR satisfies a given property. Most of the book focuses on textual or numeric data of EHRs, where more searching and mining progress has occurred. A chapter on the processing of medical images is also included. Maintaining a uniform style across chapters and minimizing technical jargon, this book presents the various ways to extract useful knowledge from EHRs. It skillfully discusses how EHR data can be effectively searched and mined.

The People’s Songs: The Story of Modern Britain in 50 Records

The People’s Songs: The Story of Modern Britain in 50 Records

An original book to accompany Stuart Maconie’s landmark Radio 2 series: a history of post-war Britain through pop music. These are the songs that we have listened to, laughed to, loved to and laboured to, as well as downed tools and danced to. Covering the last seven decades, Stuart Maconie looks at the songs that have sound tracked our changing times, and just sometimes – changed the way we feel. Beginning with Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again,” a song that reassured a nation parted from their loved ones by the turmoil of war, and culminating with the manic energy of “Bonkers,” Dizzee Rascal’s anthem for the push and rush of the 21st century inner city, “The People’s Songs” takes a tour of our island’s pop music, and asks what it means to us. The story of modern Britain is told chronologically over 50 chapters, through the records that we listened to and loved during the dramatic and kaleidoscopic period from the Second World War to the present day. This is not a rock critique about the 50 greatest tracks ever recorded. Rather, it is a celebration of songs that tell us something about how we have felt about things in our lives down the eras – work, war, class, leisure, race, family, drugs, sex, patriotism and more. In times of prosperity or poverty this is the music that inspired haircuts and dance crazes, but also protest and social change. The companion to Stuart Maconie’s landmark Radio 2 series, “The People’s Songs” shows us the power of cheap pop music, one of Britain’s greatest exports.

Josh Duggar Records Destroyed By Arkansas Police At Judge’s Request

Police in Arkansas have destroyed records detailing the investigation into sexual abuse allegations against TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting” star Josh Duggar.

“The judge ordered us yesterday to expunge that record,” Springdale Police spokesman Scott Lewis told The Associated Press on Friday. “As far as the Springdale Police Department is concerned this report doesn’t exist.”

Lewis also told the AP that these types of records are usually kept indefinitely.

A 2006 police report, which was obtained by In Touch before its destruction, indicates that family patriarch Jim Bob Duggar knew as early as 2002 that Josh Duggar — who was 14 at the time — was accused of sexually abusing an underage girl. The teen was ultimately accused of inappropriately touching five underage girls, some of whom were his sisters, between 2002 and 2003.

Police did not find out about the allegations until 2006, when they were tipped off to a letter discussing the incidents, the AP reports. A family friend had lent another person a book, and the letter was stuck inside.

The police report obtained by In Touch indicates Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar told police in 2006 that they had disciplined their son themselves.

The couple allegedly said that they sent Josh Duggar to a “Christian program” that “consisted of physical hard work and counseling.” Michelle Duggar later admitted that they actually just sent him to live with a family friend to help with a home remodeling business, according to In Touch.

Both Josh Duggar, now 27, and his parents acknowledged the incidents and publicly apologized in Facebook posts on Thursday.

TLC pulled all airings of “19 Kids and Counting” from its lineup the day after Duggar admitted the allegations were true.

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee voiced his support for the judge’s decision to destroy the records in a Facebook post Friday. “There was no consideration of the fact that the victims wanted this to be left in the past and ultimately a judge had the information on file destroyed — not to protect Josh, but the innocent victims,” Huckabee wrote.

The Duggar family has “a long and active history of political advocacy for social conservative causes,” CNN noted. Josh Duggar resigned from his position at the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group and lobbying organization, on Thursday. According to the AP, Duggar was previously “a public face” of the group.

Records Ruin the Landscape

Records Ruin the Landscape

John Cage’s disdain for records was legendary. He repeatedly spoke of the ways in which recorded music was antithetical to his work. In Records Ruin the Landscape, David Grubbs argues that, following Cage, new genres in experimental and avant-garde music in the 1960s were particularly ill-suited to be represented in the form of a recording. These activities include indeterminate music, long-duration minimalism, text scores, happenings, live electronic music, free jazz, and free improvisation. How could these proudly evanescent performance practices have been adequately represented on an LP? In their day, few of these works circulated in recorded form. By contrast, contemporary listeners can encounter this music not only through a flood of LP and CD releases of archival recordings, but also in even greater volume through Internet file-sharing and online resources. Present-day listeners are coming to know that era’s experimental music through the recorded artifacts of composers and musicians who largely disavowed recordings. In Records Ruin the Landscape, Grubbs surveys a musical landscape marked by altered listening practices.

These 10 Wedding World Records Are Nothing Short Of Amazing

By Kristen Droesch for

Weddings are becoming more and more extravagant, and we’re all aware of it. Haven’t you ever found yourself at a wedding reception and thought, “Gosh, this must be a record-setter”? Well, a record was quite literally recently at a Sri Lankan wedding, when the bride rolled in with 126 bridesmaids. Yes 126! This got us thinking — what other world records* are out there relating to weddings?

Wet and wild.
The largest underwater wedding was achieved with 303 divers in Poland attending the nuptials of Ewa Staronska and Pawel Burkowski in 2011. Even the priest, Father Pawel Wrobel, was a licensed diver!

All that glitters.
The record for most pearls on a wedding gown was set by Yumi Katsura of Japan, who put a whopping 13,262 cultured Akoya pearls on her gown in 2012.

That’s a lot of conjugal visits.
In 2000, 120 prisoners at Carandiru prison, Sao Paulo, Brazil, got married to their respective fiancées, setting the record for largest prison wedding.

Rolling thunder.
Also in 2000, Peter Schmidl and Anna Turceková of Bratislava, Slovakia included a wedding procession of 597 motorcyclists on their bikes. What, they couldn’t make it an even 600?

That’s some meal.
Jayalalitha Jayaram took the cake for largest wedding feast when she spent $ 23,299,162 on her foster son’s reception in 1995, hosting 150,000 guests. The menu alone was estimated at $ 621,311!

A table-breaker.
Weighing in at 15,032 lbs, the largest wedding cake in the world was made by the chefs of Mohegan Sun in Connecticut for their New England bridal showcase.

Watch your step!
The longest wedding veil measured 11,017 ft 0.5 in and was worn by Lebanese bride Sandra Mechleb. How do you store something like that?

Bark if you believe in love.
The largest dog wedding took place in the United States in 2007 and involved 178 dog “couples.” Though not official, we’re sure the dogs enjoyed themselves.

The Vomit Comet.
All it took for Erin Finnegan and Noah Fulmor (USA) to perform the first zero-gravity wedding in 2009 was a “modified Boeing 727-200” (and, we assume, a daredevil preacher).

In 2011, Eleanor Franks of the UK set the record for fastest marathon ran in a wedding dress (veil included) by clocking in at 4 hr 11 min 01 sec.
