Reddit Community Revolts After ‘Ask Me Anything’ Administrator Is Dismissed

The Reddit community was in flux after the administrator of one of the site’s most popular sections was let go on Thursday.

It’s unclear why Victoria Taylor, the administrator of /r/IAMA (Ask Me Anything), was dismissed, but volunteer moderators shut down several other sections of the social sharing site in protest, NPR reports.

On Friday afternoon, a moderator of the AMA section, or subreddit, posted an explainer:

You may have noticed that /r/IAmA was recently set to “private” for a short period of time. A full explanation can be found here, but the gist of it is that Victoria was unexpectedly let go from Reddit and the admins did not have a good alternative to help conduct AMAs. As a result, our current system will no longer be feasible.

Chooter (Victoria) was let go as an admin by /u/kn0thing. She was a pillar of the AMA community and responsible for nearly all of reddit’s positive press. She helped not only IAMA grow, but reddit as a whole. reddit’s culture would not be what it is today without Victoria’s efforts over the last several years.

We have taken the day to try to understand how Reddit will seek to replace Victoria, and have unfortunately come to the conclusion that they do not have a plan that we can put our trust in.

Taylor reportedly helped arrange and run thousands of AMAs, Reddit’s version of the Q&A, including with President Barack Obama. She said in a short AMA of her own that she was “dazed” after the firing, but didn’t give any hints as to why it happened.

As a result, several popular subreddits, including /r/IAMA, /r/gaming, /r/history, /r/Art, /r/videos and /r/funny, were temporarily set to private, effectively shutting them down. Most of them appeared to be back up and running by mid-Friday afternoon, and many of them explained that the shutdown was due to Taylor’s dismissal.

In a post early Friday, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian apologized for “how we handled communicating change to the AMA team this morning.” He urged subreddit monitors to make their pages public again:

Your message was received loud and clear. The communication between Reddit and the moderators needs to improve dramatically. We will work closely with you all going forward to ensure events like today don’t happen again. At this point, however, the blackout has served its purpose, and now it’s time to get Reddit functioning again.

The popular 10-year-old site reported nearly 164 million unique viewers last month.

12 Things We Learned About Leslie Jones From Her Reddit AMA

The newest cast member of “Saturday Night Live” is also one of its most dynamic. Leslie Jones did stand-up for decades before becoming a staff writer, “Weekend Update” regular and now a featured player on the show, but a lot people still don’t know that much about her.

On Tuesday, Jones provided some insight into her life and new role on the show by interacting with fans during an“Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit. She gave candid answers to questions about her feelings on certain sketches, her biggest comedic inspirations and, of course, Colin Jost.

Check out the most interesting things we learned about Leslie Jones below and read the full AMA thread here.

1. Being asked to become part of the cast was a huge surprise for her.

2. Growing up, she looked up to Richard Pryor, saying, “He was literally my everything.” Her other inspirations include Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, Buster Keaton, Whoopi Goldberg, Redd Foxx, Louis C.K. and Bill Burr.

3. She has the best kind of friendship with “Weekend Update” host Colin Jost.

4. You might be surprised to learn that she is 47 years young! As Leslie explained, “Black does not crack.”

5. She thinks it takes 10 years for a person to become funny.

6. Her favorite sketch that she’s acted in so far is “Back Home Ballers,” because it was her first time rapping, but she considers “New Annie” to be the first sketch she appeared in “successfully.”

7. She knows why that “Couple” sketch she did with Chris Rock didn’t go as well as planned.

8. She actually IS a Taylor Swift fan. “Mean” helped her get through a bad relationship.

RuPaul Hosts Reddit ‘Ask Me Anything’

Well, well, well. Looks like Ms. RuPaul himself finally sat down with the Reddit community and opened the doors for something we’ve all been waiting for: an “Ask Me Anything!”

While Ru ignored a couple of the questions that we’re dying to know the answer to (…”All Stars 2” anyone?), the Supermodel of The World did toss us a few juicy tidbits.

One of our favorite moments came when Ru discussed meeting Kurt Cobain at the ’93 VMAs shortly after Ru rocketed to stardom:

He was a real sweetheart. And he told me that he had come to see my nightclub act, in Seattle, but got there two hours too late! Haha! He had no idea that they put me on at the club so early. So he completely missed me. But he was a real sweetheart, a real kind soul. And he actually – we worked together again on SNL, you know, later on that same year. And he and the rest of the boys were absolutely fabulous, so lovely, and they really appreciated what I was doing, I think mainly because he thought outside the box and understood that, you know, what drag is at its core, totally punk-rock.

Another fan questioned Ru about the upcoming season seven of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” noting that in the past the show has taken aim at other popular television programs. When probed about what shows will be skewered on this upcoming season, he responded with: “SCANDAL… It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia… and Workaholics.”

Ru also answered one fan’s question about why he never took a drag name, and instead built his career on his legal name.

“Because I was stupid,” he claims. “It’s important to use a stage name so that your real name doesn’t appear on public records.”

And to top it all off… Ru finally settled the debate surrounding his famous “Pickle Surprise” video with Lady Bunny, filmed way back in the day.

HAHAHAHAHAA. Oh my god,” Ru told the commenter. “Do you realize that we filmed Pickle Surprise about twenty-five years ago? And the surprise in a pickle surprise is that there is no pickle! HAHAHA!”
