Roseanne Barr Has ‘No Regrets’ About Voting for Trump — but May Run for President Again Herself

Roseanne Barr has never been one to shy away from what’s she’s thinking or what she believes in.

“I’ve learned that there’s a big difference between public and private,” Barr, 65, tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue, on stands Friday. “I always walked a line between those two things, but I think it’s better to just put everything out there.”

With 35 years in show business, the comedian has found herself at the center of plenty of controversies, divorces, mental illness woes and family strife. And while she admits that she may have chosen to do things differently, she doesn’t regret a thing.

“I’m smarter now,” she says. “If I was as smart then as I am now … well, that’s not possible. I don’t regret anything. All those good stories, it all brought me here.”

And she’s used to taking the heat (in 1990 George H.W. Bush called her rendition of the national anthem at a baseball game “disgraceful”). “It comes with the territory,” she says of being slammed by opponents. “Like free drinks. It’s worth it.”

Barr, who currently splits her time between Hawaii, Los Angeles and San Francisco, made a name for herself an early age.

From 1988 to 1997, Roseanne — a groundbreaking sitcom about a blue-collar family — made her very famous and exposed her volatility, rocky personal life and political views. Now, with the Roseanne revival in full swing on ABC, Barr is ecstatic that the show will continue to touch on modern-day topics.

“It’s important to talk,” says Barr, whose namesake character voted for President Donald Trump.”Now, it seems like every topic is being discussed, and I’m happy with that.”

A longtime political progressive, Barr campaigned for the Green Party presidential nomination in 2012, but in 2016 she voted for Trump to “shake up the status quo.”

“I think we need to converse more, but more than anything we need to get involved and run our government for ourselves instead of sitting back and wanting somebody else to do it,” she says.  “Even voting isn’t enough. You have to be involved. I talk about this with my grandkids – you have to get in there and get your hands dirty if you want things to go the way you want them to go. We’re lucky in this country that we can do that. We can really get our hands dirty and put our big collective shoulders to the wheel and change and fix things. I think that’s what’s exciting about our country right now.”

“People are mad,” she adds. “But just being mad doesn’t do anything. You’re just a toad. But if you’re mad and that propels you to get involved to run for office — that was a lot of the reason I ran, just to show other grandparents. We’re the most educated, rich generation that ever was, so if we can’t do it, nobody can. I like to see that.”

For more on Roseanne, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on stands Friday

And while Barr is currently enjoying her life in Hawaii with her boyfriend of 15 years, Johnny Argent,  and spending time with her five kids and six grandchildren, she says running for president again is “never off the table.”

“I’m going to keep running until I win,” she says.

Roseanne airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Emily Maynard Johnson Admits She Regrets Daughter Ricki’s Appearances on The Bachelorette

Emily Maynard Johnson has her hands full as a mom of four, but there was a time in her life when she was just getting adjusted to new parenthood — and admittedly, she would do things a little differently if she could.

In a new interview, The Bachelorette alum opened up with PEOPLE’s Celeb Parents Get Real about how she regrets having daughter Ricki, now 12, make appearances on the show.

“I wish that I would’ve kept totally separate ,” says Maynard Johnson. “At the time, I thought, ‘This is it,’ and I never would’ve brought her into it had I not thought that.”

“So I wish that I maybe would’ve taken a step back,” adds the 31-year-old star. “Maybe sheltered her from that a little bit more.”

Since welcoming Ricki at the age of 19, Maynard Johnson has given birth to three sons with husband Tyler Johnson: newborn Gatlin Avery, 6 weeks, Gibson Kyle, 15 months, and Jennings Tyler, 2. But the former reality star admits it’s her daughter who still makes her the most emotional.

“Ricki is the one that makes me laugh the most she’s probably the one that makes me cry the most,” says Maynard Johnson. “Because I had her when I was 19 and we’ve really grown up together.”

She adds, “So to see her becoming a grown-up … I cried like a baby at her lower-school graduation. People thought somebody had died. I was sobbing, ugly crying — it was horrible.”

“And that is, sad to say, totally me,” she admits.

Bill Maher Says He Regrets Using ‘Offensive’ Racial Slur In Apology

UPDATE: 2:40 p.m. ET ― Following the nonstop criticism, Maher has apologized for using a racial slur on his Friday show. In a statement to HuffPost, he said:

Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show. Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry.

PREVIOUSLY:

“Inexcusable” and “tasteless.”

Those are the words HBO used Saturday to describe Bill Maher’s use of the N-word on his talk show, “Real Time with Bill Maher.

The host used the offensive word during a segment with Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) on Friday’s show after he told Maher, “We’d love to have you work in the fields with us.”

Maher replied, “Work in the fields? Senator, I’m a house n****r!”

The comedian told the audience it was a joke, but criticism of his remarks has been relentless, with Maher trending at the top of Twitter throughout the day.

Now, HBO has released a statement to People, saying, “Bill Maher’s comment last night was completely inexcusable and tasteless.”

The statement adds that HBO will remove the “deeply offensive comment from any subsequent airings of the show.”

As HuffPost’s Doha Madani points out, this type of controversy isn’t new for Maher. The comedian has a history of making offensive comments, once even comparing Muslim singer Zayn Malik to the Boston Marathon bomber.

Following the “joke” on Friday, many are calling for Maher to be fired from “Real Time.”

Thus far, Maher hasn’t issued a statement on the controversy and his reps have not answered requests for comment.

Jenny Slate Gets Real About Her Breakup With Chris Evans, Has ‘No Regrets’

Jenny Slate is the first to admit that she and “Captain America” star Chris Evans were an unexpected pairing.

“We used to talk about what kinds of animals we were,” Slate recently told Vulture. “Chris said it’s like I’m a chick riding on a St. Bernard’s head. We’re an odd match.”

The actress, best known for her hilarious roles in “Parks and Recreation,” “Kroll Show” and indie film “Obvious Child,” opened up to the outlet about her romantic relationship and breakup with her superhero ex, and says that their differences are what eventually split them apart.

Chris is a very, very famous person. For him to go to a restaurant is totally different than for me to go. I sit in my window and I say ‘Hi’ to people on the street. I have more freedom because I’m not Captain America. I’m mostly a cartoon.
Jenny Slate

“Chris is a very, very famous person,” she told Vulture. “For him to go to a restaurant is totally different than for me to go. I sit in my window and I say ‘Hi’ to people on the street. I have more freedom because I’m not Captain America. I’m mostly a cartoon.”

The attention was too much for Slate, who was also dealing with a divorce from Dean Fleischer-Camp, a film editor and her husband of nearly four years, while she was dating Evans.

“This is what I needed to do to feel normal,” she explained. “To be alone.”

Slate explains that when she and Evans first met, there were strong friendship vibes, but that was about it. The actress would even get annoyed by Evan’s weekly game nights that he insisted the cast and crew attend.

“At first I was like, ‘What a f—– nightmare,’” the actress recalled. “Chris is a different speed than me — I think he really did just jump out of a plane for an interview. And so when he was like, ‘Game nights,’ I was like, ‘This is annoying. This guy’s like a sports guy. He’s the kid that likes P.E.’”

Evan’s joyful energy eventually won Slate over, and the two got to know one another. But when Evans, who has dated women like Jessica Biel and Minka Kelly in the past, began having romantic feelings for Slate, she admits that she thought it was “a prank.”

“To be quite honest, I didn’t think I was his type,” she told Vulture.

“I’m considered some sort of alternative option, even though I know I’m a majorly vibrant sexual being.”

She also noted, “If you are a woman who really cares about her freedom, her rights, her sense of being an individual, it is confusing to go out with one of the most objectified people in the entire world.”

And that objectification played into their relationship as well. Slate cites times when the couple would be somewhere like CVS and random women would come up to her and say things like, “‘Oh, my God, is that Chris Evans? He’s so hot!’ You’re like, ‘How dare you? That’s my boyfriend. But yes, he’s so hot.’”

As for their future relationship, Slate hopes that she and Evans can find their way back to their game night beginnings.

“We’re not on bad terms, but we haven’t really seen each other, spoken a lot,” Slate said. “I think it’s probably best. I’d love to be his friend one day, but we threw down pretty hard. No regrets, though. Ever.”

I don't plan on it! Thanks @familyaffairs_by_ninaegli for making this happy shirt!

Judy Blume Says She Regrets Joining Glee Club That Excluded Black Students

NEW YORK (AP) — Judy Blume, whose novels helped millions of young people get through childhood, has some regrets about her own youth.

The 77-year-old writer says she had been in an “advanced” high school glee club in New Jersey that excluded blacks.

Blume was interviewed on stage Sunday by fellow author Jennifer Weiner at BookCon, the fan-based gathering held at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York.

Blume says she apologized to classmates at a 40th anniversary reunion and remembers saying, “I felt guilty for all these years” about not speaking out.

Blume says she had mentioned the glee club while writing her new novel, “In The Unlikely Event,” inspired by three plane crashes in her native Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1951-52, but removed the material because it didn’t fit the narrative.

Lauren Conrad on the Outfit She Really Regrets Wearing on Laguna Beach

lauren-conrad-pale-pink-outfit-style

Thinking back on your high school style is something most of us are joyfully free from really needing to do. Lauren Conrad? Not so much. Even if we all thought Laguna Beach was the pinnacle of style when the show was on, there’s a good chance any viewings now would ellicit some feelings of shock over what we actually thought was so fashionable. The same holds true for LC, who figured out which outfit she regrets the most from her teenage days.

“It’s me in those jeans that came right about the knee. The capri denim. Everybody else was wearing them, but [pictures are] a reminder they were a bummer,” she told MTV News.

Other fashion tidbits to note? She has two more Disney collabs on the calendar (she’s already done Cinderella and Minnie Mouse), and there’s a trendy summer sandal she can’t quite get behind: Birkenstocks.

“I can’t do it. I don’t feel pretty enough,” she said. “I can’t put something on that doesn’t make me happy. Some people wear them, and they look cool in them. I just look like a fool.”

This Is The ‘Daily Show’ Interview Jon Stewart Regrets Most

Jon Stewart spent 16 years behind the desk of “The Daily Show,” but there’s only one interview he really regrets.

In a discussion with The Guardian, the host said he wishes he questioned former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld harder about his role in the Bush administration’s post-9/11 conflicts. Rumsfeld visited “The Daily Show” in 2011 to discuss his memoir Known and Unknown.

I should have pushed, but he’s very adept at deflecting,” Stewart told The Guardian. “That interview with Rumsfeld went shitty, but it’s still just an interview. He’s the one who has to live with the repercussions of what he really did, so there’s nothing that could happen on my show that carries that same level of regret.”

The host went on to say the reason behind his choice to leave “The Daily Show,” noting that it had nothing to do with the show not working any longer. “It was more, ‘Yup, it’s working. But I’m not getting the same satisfaction.'”

“Daily Show” correspondent Trevor Noah will take over hosting the show later this year when Stewart steps down. Back in March, Stewart joked that he was so thrilled for Noah that he might even consider returning as a correspondent.

For the full interview, head over to The Guardian.

Barb Jungr On Kicking Off 2015 With Her ‘Mad About The Boy And No Regrets’ Cabaret Show In New York

Barb Jungr likens her show, “Mad About The Boy And No Regrets,” to the act of renewal and, more specifically, “shedding one’s skin,” so it’s only appropriate that her New York engagement kick off at the start of 2015.

When she hits the stage of venerable Manhattan nightspot 54 Below on Jan. 2, the British singer-songwriter, 60, will tackle songs by Bruce Springsteen, Noel Coward, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, among others. Still, she says anyone seeking inspiration as far as resolutions or explicit messages are concerned would be better served elsewhere.

“I don’t ever want to feel that I’ve become a message bearer, other than…I would like there to be joy in the world through the medium of what I do as a musician and an artist,” Jungr told The Huffington Post in an interview. “By excavating what we excavate, we allow the possibility that we can see the whole landscape. “

Jungr, who is of both Czech and German descent, has been labeled a chansonnière in Europe, but her musical interpretations often defy classification stateside. While she was hailed as the “high priestess of cabaret” by Time Out New York, Jungr makes it clear that her aspirations extend into other genres, too.

“I think I’m a cabaret artist and a jazz singer,” she said. “Because I improvise, re-harmonize [and] I deal with music in a certain way, my feet are in jazz. But my sensibility is in cabaret.”

In November 2014, Jungr brought another show, “Hard Rain,” to New York’s 59E59 Theater. Jungr says she sees that show, hailed by The New York Times for its “astounding emotional range,” and her album of the same name as the politically-edged counterparts to “Mad About The Boy,” which was conceived prior to “Hard Rain” and features a fearlessly romantic, though unsentimental, tone.

As both shows evidence, Jungr is perhaps best known for her interpretations of Dylan’s songs. Regarding her tendency to emphasize material written by male singer-songwriters, she noted, “I get to understand things that I don’t necessarily understand. It’s the word made fresh. It’s a revelation to me.“

Above all, Jungr, who says she’s a fan of Eliza Carthy, Gillian Welch and Meghan Trainor among other contemporary female performers, favors material with an edge, even if she doesn’t like to “intellectualize” her set lists too much beforehand.

“I like songs that strip away the stuff, so that when you’re singing them, you access something that goes beyond words and people can also access within themselves — who knows what it is? It’s best we don’t ever try and nail that down,” she said. “But I like a bit of bite to the work. I want a little bit of kicking, a little bit of irreverence. I want a little bit of knickers off and here’s my backside.”

Barb Jungr’s “Mad About The Boy And No Regrets” plays New York’s 54 Below on Jan. 2-4. Head here for more information.

TIME Regrets Naming Pope Francis ‘Person Of The Year’ After Beyoncé Drops Surprise Album

Staff at TIME have been left fuming after Beyoncé released a surprise album just days after the magazine chose the Pope as their Person Of The Year.

“I told them we should wait at least a few weeks for any late entries,” one unnamed staffer told HuffPost UK Comedy. “But they wouldn’t listen. Now look what’s happened.”

“Beyoncé unexpectedly dropping a new album is a complete game-changer,” said another. “There’s nothing Pope Francis could have done to beat this… except for releasing an album. And even then, he’d have to better 14 new songs and 17 videos.”

Beyoncé is now expected to be a last-minute entry on at least 500 end-of-year lists, including 2013’s Best Albums and 2013’s Most Overrated Albums.
