The Mills Remembers Hong Kong’s Textile Past and Promotes Its Future

HONG KONG — Like a lot of children who grow up in magnate families, Vanessa Cheung wasn’t so sure she wanted to work for the family business.
Cheung’s grandfather, Chen Din Hwa, founded Nan Fung Group as a textiles business in 1954. It was the days before Mainland China had opened up as an option for global manufacturing and Chen’s business grew quickly, earning him a place in the billionaires’ club and the nickname the “king of cotton yarn.” At its textiles operations height, Nan Fung employed more than 3,000 people to operate in their mills, producing up to 32.5 million pounds of yarn a year.
But the industry migrated across the border into China proper in the Eighties — lured by cheap labor and other costs at a fraction of the price — and Nan Fung shifted gears, focusing instead on developing a property empire across East Asia. The textiles operations faded away and by the time Cheung, who had embarked on a career as a landscape architect, was convinced to join Nan Fung, three of the former six mills the company owned had been turned into residential units, and the other three simply were used as warehouse space.
It was those three

Sarah Silverman Remembers Her Mother on Anniversary of Death: ‘I Miss You Mom, You Are a Warrior’

Sarah Silverman shared a touching post on Instagram in honor of her mother on Saturday.

Silverman posted a throwback photo of her mother, Beth Ann O’Hara, who died two years ago at the age of 73. Wearing a red shirt and denim overalls, O’Hara flashed a big smile for the beautiful photo — the same one Silverman shared when her mother died in 2015.

“Two years ago today my mom left her earthly shell. I feel like I’m just beginning to understand her. She had so many struggles and over her years persevered through all of them,” wrote Silverman in the emotional post.

“She was raised in a time when girls were seen and not heard and went to college to find husbands instead of themselves. But she found her voice and she found her immeasurable strength and had great years after allowing herself her full potential. And then her body was the fight and she battled for decades before that took her too. I miss you mom. You are a warrior.”

O’Hara was also involved in showbiz — producing and directing 50 plays over the course of 25 years,  New Hampshire Public Radio reported.

In honor of her work, Silverman presented her mom with a lifetime achievement award at the New Hampshire Theater Awards in 2003, the New Hampshire Public Radio also reported.

Before presenting the award, the actress and comedian described her mother as “loving, nurturing” and “colorful.”

“Loving, nurturing, caring, colorful — she used to wear two different color socks, I’m not sure she was aware of that – supportive, honest, strong and with endless creativity and energy. She gives us the feeling that we fill her heart with love and I think it’s because we fill her heart with love. Mom … we feel the same. you fill our hearts, as well,” Silverman said of her mother during the award presentation.

When her mother passed away in 2015, Silverman wrote a beautiful tribute on Twitter.

“Wednesday morning my mom died,” Silverman wrote for the Twitter post. “She was a know-it-all in overalls & two different colored socks. And defiantly, no bra.”

“The woman who, when I was little, gave me detailed directions to a restaurant ladies room then secretly watched as I found my way to it on my own,” she continued. “The woman who went back to college at 42, and skinny dipped in ponds, and told me never to protect myself from a broken heart because it was so very worth the pain to get to experience love.”

Debbie Reynolds Remembers Her Daughter, Carrie Fisher, In Heartbreaking Post

Of all the tributes pouring in after the death of beloved actress Carrie Fisher, none are quite as heartbreaking as the one written by her mother, Debbie Reynolds.

The 84-year-old actress shared an emotional post on Facebook Tuesday, just a few hours after Fisher’s death.

“Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and amazing daughter,” she wrote. “I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop. Love Carries Mother.”

After just an hour, the post had over 70,000 likes and more than 10,000 comments from fans sending their love to Reynolds after the loss of her child.

“To most of us, she was a princess who fought back, who didn’t take no for an answer….but she was so much more than a singular role,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “No parent should see their child leave first. Thank you for being a great mother to such a talented woman. This world needed her. All my love and prayers.”

The Other Half Of Wham! Remembers His Close Friend George Michael

Wham! may have broken up 30 years ago, but the two members of the musical duo, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, remained close friends up until Michael’s death at the age of 53 this month.

Unlike so many other famous musical groups, the two friends, who once dreamed as teenage kids in England of becoming pop icons together, never had a falling out after they decided to call it quits. In fact, in 1986 ― after multiple No. 1 hits and 25 million records sold ― Michael called their decision “the most amicable split in pop history.”

On his website, Michael referred to Ridgeley as his “best friend,” saying that at the end of their run together, their friendship was “as strong as it was in the beginning.”

Ridgeley, who largely escaped from public view after Michael took his career solo in the mid-1980s, evidently shares that feeling. Upon hearing of Michael’s death, Ridgeley tweeted that he was “heartbroken” and that Michael had “left the best of himself,” a clear reference to his friend’s music.

“[George Michael] had a voice that would transport u, he was the finest singer/songwriter of his generation & has left the best of himself 4 us,” Ridgeley wrote.

DiCaprio obviously went on to bigger and better things, but he’s spoken about his time on the ABC series fondly. Following the death of Alan Thicke, who played TV dad Jason Seaver for seven seasons, DiCaprio shared a touching tribute to the actor on Facebook.

“Alan was a devoted father, husband, friend and role model,” he wrote. “He knew how to harness the power of the entertainment industry to be a positive influence in so many lives — including mine. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity I had to work with Alan early in my career.”

“I’ve seen him a number of times over the years and when Alan Thicke walked in the room, quite frankly, no one was cooler,” DiCaprio wrote.

Thicke suffered a fatal heart attack on Tuesday while playing hockey with his son Carter. He was pronounced dead later that night at at Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Burbank, California.

Empire State Building Pays Tribute To Endangered Animals, Remembers Cecil The Lion

Cecil the lion, a majestic black-maned beast who once roamed the woodlands of Zimbabwe’s Hwange, was found dead last month on the outskirts of the national park. He had been killed by an American dentist for tens of thousands of dollars, then skinned and beheaded for a hunting trophy.

Cecil’s death has sparked outrage worldwide, as people everywhere lament the damage that humans continue to inflict on the populations of not just lions, but the planet’s many endangered creatures. On Saturday night, the Empire State Building served as a timely, sky-high reminder of this devastating impact, as images and video of threatened animals were projected onto the façade of the iconic New York City skyscraper.

Cecil was one of the animals featured.

For three hours, “insects, sea creatures, mammals, and birds crawled, swam, and flew over” the Empire State Building “as spectators ‘oohed’ and ‘awed,’” said The Verge. Snow leopards, tigers, lemurs, and manta rays were among the creatures on display.

The spectacle, achieved with the help of 40 projectors, was organized by the Oceanic Preservation Society and the filmmakers of “Racing Extinction,” an upcoming documentary about humans’ impact on threatened species.

“I’m hoping with this film and this event, we can raise awareness and start a movement,” the film’s director Louie Psihoyos (of “The Cove” fame) told The Verge.

NBC New York says the projections were a first for the Empire State Building, which is typically lit up with colors or, on occasion, light shows.

In total, 160 species were featured on the skyscraper. The New York Times says the production cost $ 1 million.

Donny Osmond Remembers His Last Conversation With Michael Jackson

In a HuffPost Live interview Wednesday, Donny Osmond looked back on his longtime friendship with the undisputed King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

“Back in the early ’70s it was the Jacksons and the Osmonds. It was Michael and Donny. We were kind of, like, parallel,” the 57-year-old singer told host Nancy Redd.

The two came from large families, both born as the seventh children in families of nine. Their mothers’ even share the same birthday, he added.

Osmond recounted one of the many conversations the two had before Jackson’s death in 2009. Their last chat, about a year before Jackson’s death, may have been the most indicative of how the lives of both stars had changed so dramatically throughout the years.

“He said, ‘Please don’t tell anybody, but I rented one of those big custom buses, those touring buses, and I took my kids. We’re hiding in Phoenix right now.’ Hiding from the press because everything had hit the fan,” Osmond said.

Osmond was quick to offer a few words of advice to Jackson.

“And I said, ‘Why don’t you do me a favor, Mike. You’re a nine-hour drive from my home in Utah. Bring your kids. No one will know you’re here. They’ll swim in the swimming pool. Have a little normalcy in your life’,” he said.

But the trip to Utah never panned out.

“And he said, ‘You know what Donny, I think I’m going to do that.’ And he never did,” Osmond said.

Kirsten Gillibrand Remembers The Time She And Connie Britton Drank Toad Venom In China

In what must have been the most fun summer ever, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Connie Britton were roommates during a college program in Beijing while they were both majoring in Asian studies at Dartmouth. During a HuffPost Live interview Monday, Gillibrand shared an incredible anecdote from their trip that just begs for a sitcom adaptation.

It started when Gillibrand, Britton and a few friends went to a Chinese beach, the senator told host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani during a chat about her new book Off The Sidelines. The women enjoyed crabs and “great seafood,” which then backfired in a big way:

We got home, we were all so sick. We were just throwing up nonstop, terrible food poisoning. My most vibrant memory is being taken to the hospital on the back of a bike, like, as you’re heaving. Connie was sick, I was sick, and they gave us this vial of black liquid. It was toad venom, and they said, ‘Drink this.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my God, am I gonna die?’ So we all just looked at each other and drank it and decide, ‘OK, maybe we get better?’

They did get better, and the toad venom episode became just one of the great stories from that summer, which found the now-powerful women camping out on flat cement beds with straw mattresses.

Britton opened up about her friendship with Gillibrand during her own visit to HuffPost Live earlier this month. When the senator saw Britton’s comments, she responded by spotlighting the fine example Britton’s “Friday Night Lights” character Tami Taylor became for women.

“She said, ‘I will only do [the series] if you let me help write this character, and she has to be strong and she has to use her voice and she has to have real opinions,'” Gillibrand said of Britton’s decision to take the role. “Every script she’d get, she’d push back on it, push back on it and make this character into this amazing mom who really made a difference in her community.”

Hear more about the amazing Gillibrand-Britton friendship above, and click here for the full HuffPost Live conversation.
