The Unseen and The Lost Explorer Unveil T-Shirt That Changes Colors in Response to Water Pollutants

JUST ADD H2O: To try to make climate change more recognizable, The Unseen and The Lost Explorer have introduced a T-shirt that is designed to change colors in reaction to water pollutants.
In addition to ocean acidification’s and acid rain’s damaging effects on climate change, both parties wanted to draw attention to the fact that up to 20 percent of industrial world water pollution is caused by textile dyeing and treatment, ranking that second behind the oil industry. While that statistic was presented by the International Research Journal of Engineering and Technology, this year’s U.N. World Water Development report claims that 80 percent of the world wastewater is released into the environment without treatment.
To create the shirt, “an ancient pH indication potion” extracted from red cabbage was replicated by using a simple dyeing process. That dye was then used for a Lost Explorer cotton and hemp T-shirt. What starts as a purple T-shirt changes into other colors after contact to non-neutral water. Red cabbage juice contains anthocyanin, which can be used as a pH indicator. The pH level of the water that it subsequently contacts makes the shirt change into different colors. The shirt will change through the pH scale from

Tilda Swinton Had A Hilariously Petty Response To George Clooney’s Baby News

Hollywood is abuzz with the news that George and Amal Clooney welcomed their twins, Alexander and Ella, on Tuesday, and one of the actor’s former co-stars had a funny take on the announcement.

Tilda Swinton told reporters at the New York premiere of her new movie, “Okja,” on Thursday that the actor used to poke fun at her lack of sleep as a mom of baby twins, according to People.

“I have twins myself and [George] always used to laugh about me looking so tired when the twins were small, and now I have the last laugh,” Swinton joked.

Swinton and Clooney appeared in three films together ―“Michael Clayton,” “Burn After Reading” and “Hail, Caesar!” The actress has two sons, Xavier and Honor, who are now 9 years old and likely out of the late-night wake-up game.

Thus far, it seems she hasn’t offered George any twin parenting advice.

Said Swinton, “I’ve just laughed. I’ve laughed at him across the airwaves.”

The Perfect Response To ‘Are Men Second-Class Citizens?’

You can spend a lifetime trying to find the perfect gif to deploy in response to sheer ignorance about women’s rights.

Today, we can thank Guardian Australia columnist Van Badham for supplying us with one.

The writer appeared on Australian morning show “Sunrise” on Saturday, where hosts were conducting a deep-dive into the ever-pressing topic, “Are men second-class citizens?”

The statement that prompted Badham’s eye roll of the century was “left feminism is essentially selfish.” Former Australian politician Mark Latham made that remark while trying to characterize Badham as only concerned about problems that affect educated, privileged women — even though she covers class inequality at The Guardian. (She also wrote a comprehensive response to Latham’s remarks, which you can read here.)

But her sublime expression is nothing if not versatile when confronting sexist idiocy.

For example:

“Why don’t you want kids?”

“Are you on your period?”

“Women are just voting for Hillary/Bernie because she’s a woman/they want boys to like them.”

“You’d be so much prettier if you smiled more.”

Try it yourself! In the meantime, the entire segment can be viewed below:

Woman In A Wheelchair Gives Powerful Response To A Rude Question About Her Sex Life

“I get a lot of questions from strangers who think that because my wheelchair puts me at a lower height, the walls surrounding my personal life must be lower too.”

So begins Kelsey Warren’s riveting spoken word poem called “My Body.” As a disabled woman, Warren discusses the rude stares and even ruder questions she constantly receives. Although she says these run-of-the-mill intrusions don’t bother her any longer, she points out one question she recently received that really got under her skin:

“So do you like let your partner have a side relationship so they can have normal sex every once in awhile?”

“Honey,” she replies to the question in her performance. “If they’re with me, they’re not looking for normal and I don’t mean because I’m crippled.”

Warren goes on to explain that her sex is exciting and comfortable and sensual — really anything but “normal” and that’s why it’s so good. “Sex with me is never normal,” she tells the crowd. “Cripple copulation may be slightly more complicated, but it is always climactic. Not once has someone that I had sex wit said my sex was less than.”

She proudly proclaims her body is beautiful. “This body wasn’t made to meet your definition of desirable,” Warren says. “This body doesn’t exist to be taken or left. This body is broken but it is beautiful.”

With her powerful delivery, Warren nears the end of the poem with a truth all women can heed: “My body will not be denied its worth. My body will keep the job of being my body, perfectly.”

Mom’s Honest, Inspiring Response To Comments About Her ‘Perfect’ Body

Mom and musician Kimberly Henderson gained a following back in December after her gorgeous lullaby cover of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” went viral.

Seven months and countless media appearances later, Henderson is back in the spotlight for a different reason. On June 19, the mother of four shared a selfie that shows off her “imperfect” stomach — stretch marks and all.

Everyone always compliments me on how I have such a "perfect" body after 4 kids. I decided to upload this pic and leave…

Posted by Kimberly Henderson on Thursday, June 18, 2015

“I decided to upload this pic and leave my belly ‘unedited’ ‘unphotoshopped’ because I used to struggle with accepting my body after kids,” she wrote in the caption. “I used to have a six pack before my babies.. And now even though I work out I know its not going to make my loose skin tight.. Or my stretch marks disappear ever lol and I’m ok with that because everyday I get to wake up to four beautiful smiling faces and I’m reminded that they are worth this flabby belly and they are worth these stretch marks.”

Henderson also opened up about her body image struggles as a young mom comparing herself to other girls her age. “I’m not trying to say I have it worse than anyone else,” she said, adding that she just wanted to share an empowering message with her fellow moms: “[Y]our body is beautiful… BECAUSE we ARE moms and we ARE superheroes and we freakin ROCK and in my opinion that is sexier than any six pack!”

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Facebook post had over 110,000 likes and thousands of comments. Henderson told The Huffington Post that she was touched by the large influx of positive comments, especially seeing “so many women and MEN lifting each other up about their bodies,” she said.

The musician said she was inspired to post the photo in response to the many comments she often receives from fans and friends about how “perfect” her post-baby body was. “Because of my thin figure people don’t think I have imperfections or insecurities,” she told HuffPost. “I wanted to show other women that I am just like them — stretch marks, loose skin.”

“I can embrace that because to me being sexy is being confident in your own skin,” she continued. “A mother’s body is beautiful and we all have insecurities.”

After years of struggling with body image and refusing to wear anything but a one-piece bathing suit to the beach, Henderson said she’s finally reached a point of being content with her appearance. “I realized that being ‘perfect’ is being imperfect. I wanted to empower other women to do the same!” And, she added, she now proudly wears bikinis. “If I hide [my stomach] that means I’m ashamed and I have nothing to be ashamed about.”

The singer, who will be going to London, Los Angeles, Nashville to work on new music this summer, hopes she can help her fans feel more confident as a show of gratitude for all the support they’ve shown her as she pursues her dreams in the music world. “And I hope I can be someone REAL they can look up to as an musical artist, a mother and a person.”

No B.S. Guide to Brand-Building by Direct Response

No B.S. Guide to Brand-Building by Direct Response

Entrepreneurs and small business owners are urged to avoid the two biggest branding mistakes they can make-first, investing in building their brand in ways that copycat big-name companies, and second, struggling to build a brand sensitive to everyone and anyone, rather than focusing on those who are spending with them. Led by Dan S. Kennedy, with the support of Forrest Walden and Jim Cavale, the co-founders of Iron Tribe Fitness, and other marketing/branding vets including Bill Gough, the number-one marketing adviser to Allstate agents; Steve Adams, CEO of a chain of 21 retail stores and an e-commerce business, and Nick Nanton, of the Dicks-Nanton Celebrity Branding Agency, entrepreneurs learn how to develop and gain profit from their personal or business brand-without corporate-sized investment. Mastering Kennedy’s branding truths and utilizing proven direct-response advertising and marketing methods, entrepreneurs create their own brand tribe-customers who believe in, buy, and promote their brand. Truths and tactics are illustrated with case studies, examples and insights from other well-known brands.

The Flawless Response This Woman Had To A Dude Who Told Her She Needed To Lose Weight

One surefire way to not pick up a lady: Tell her she needs to lose weight.

On June 3, marketing director and fashion blogger Christina Topacio took to Twitter to share an offensive and sexist text message conversation she had with a guy she had never actually met in real life.

The audacious dude told Topacio that while he would “seriously consider dating” her and “getting to know” her, he thinks she needs to change a few things. This unsolicited advice was not necessary (to say the least).

“It fucking kills me to say this… And it’s nothing you don’t already know,” the guy wrote in a text to Topacio. “And I’m positive you’ve thought about it. And I’m only telling you this because I want it to effect a change. You need to fucking lose weight. It kills me.”

Topacio told The Huffington Post that she met the guy on a dating site where they exchanged numbers, however, they had never hung out in person.

She tweeted screenshots of the entire text message conversation yesterday to her 8,500 followers, receiving over 2,500 retweets. Check out the cringeworthy exchange below:

“My first reaction was, literally, ‘Wait, what?!'” Topacio told HuffPost. “Then, I got sad. Like, this person has never seen me in real life. I was baffled.”

She said that she shared the conversation on social media to empower women to stand up for themselves. “My goal is to encourage girls to not only brush it off, despite how hurtful it is, and to laugh it away,” she said. “I want women to feel empowered to stand up for themselves, own who they are and understand that someone else’s opinion has no relation to them being an amazing person.”

“My story is not a new story, this happens to women constantly,” she added. “I’m just happy to have been given an opportunity to share my personal experience in hopes that it empowers women to shut it down. And ultimately say… I’m beautiful, I’m strong, I’m powerful, I’m 100 percent me.”

Take note of Topacio’s flawless response:

The Pentagon’s Response to Ted Cruz Regarding Jade Helm 15

Recently, Senator Ted Cruz from Texas asked the Pentagon to clarify its intentions with military exercises in Central Texas called “Jade Helm 15.” The Pentagon’s response follows:

Dear Senator Cruz:

Thank you for your inquiry into whether the Jade Helm 15 military exercise is the first wave of a federal takeover of Texas, the Trojan Horse, as it were, of the end of sovereignty in the Lone Star State. Our response, contrary to the long tradition of official correspondence and military bureaucracy, is concise: no.

But that’s just what you would expect us to say, isn’t it?

Perhaps, then, you would prefer not an official proclamation but a reasoned answer. As a master debater in college (Princeton, right?), you surely appreciate the reliability of logic, your public statements over the past few years notwithstanding. If you are disinclined to take the United States Armed Forces at their word when we promise no ill intentions towards Texas, then perhaps your considerable and vaunted intellectual powers, which once posited the regrowth of hymens as a guard against unauthorized incursions in domestic affairs, could be swayed by incontrovertible fact.

I know you think highly of our capabilities. Why else would you advocate for a short war with Iran? If we are indeed that powerful, we could probably launch an attack from any of the 15 U.S. military bases already within Texas’ borders. While Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher may have found it necessary, even attractive, to invade countries that can easily be overrun, the present DoD considers such lopsided contests at best unsporting.

As someone who was not born within the borders of this country, it might interest you to know that Texas is already part of the United States. In fact, Texas has twice joined the Union. The first time your adopted state joined the USA in 1845 it set in motion events that led to the Mexican-American War. Later, when Union troops conquered the Southern rebellion, Texas rejoined the Union. It is not, therefore, farfetched to think that Texas’ relationship to the rest of the United States could involve war, but please also keep in mind that when we refer to the United States of America, Texas is being implicitly included. We thought about calling it the United States of America and Texas, but we were afraid people might think Texas was a retrograde backwater of reactionary lunatics who think Moses was a Founding Father and laugh at you. This is way better.

Please also consider there are a great many things about Texas and Texan culture that could be threatened by another unnecessary armed conflict between Texas and the United States. We like Texas barbecue. That Green Beret who carried the flag out for the Texas Longhorn football team? That was pretty cool. The wildflowers along the highways are no joke. The late Texan Chris Kyle, the “American sniper,” is a hero to many. Texas gave the world Lyndon Johnson, a staggering gift for which America was perhaps not entirely prepared. Without the Lone Star State, the Western swing band Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys would have appeared under the performing name Robert Wills and His Playboys, which is ghastly, or not have existed at all, a possibility that DoD has officially classified as “too awful to contemplate”. And we really dig the self-awareness, the love of self that, while occasionally metastasizing into paranoid delusions such as those that motivated your original query, also make Texas a culture with an indelible sense of place.

But, we reiterate, that place is in the United States. On previous visits, we noticed that many of your residents enjoy Social Security and Medicare (you’re welcome), volunteer for the armed services, treasure federal parks, wildlife preserves, and wilderness areas, and earn and spend currency backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. With a quick Internet search, I also learned that nearly a third of Texas’ total revenue is from Federal funding. In fact, millions of your schoolchildren pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America almost every day. And unlike yourself, they apparently mean it.

There is a fundamental misapprehension that we feel is at the root of your query about our intentions was revealed in a recent comment you made to the press.

We are assured it is a military training exercise. I have no reason to doubt those assurances, but I understand the reason for concern and uncertainty, because when the federal government has not demonstrated itself to be trustworthy in this administration, the natural consequence is that many citizens don’t trust what it is saying.

If, Senator Cruz, you believe that the United States military is a political tool of its civilian leadership, you have reached a conclusion unsupported by fact, history and good sense. The troops swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States. To besmirch their loyalty to the country, even in the service of making hackneyed political points in the Republican primary, does not make you a patriot, but a partisan. Even a Princeton and Harvard Law man should know the difference.

Also, it makes you the rudest Canadian we’ve ever run across.

Sincerely Yours,

Secretary Ashton Carter

Elie Jacobs and Frank Spring, who along with Jason Stanford are political partners of the Truman National Security Project, contributed equally to this post but suffer lesser billing because of Stanford’s inability to figure out certain technological hurdles.

Alabama’s Response to the Penitentiary Movement, 1829-1865

Alabama’s Response to the Penitentiary Movement, 1829-1865

This history of the Alabama penal system describes how the state responded to the national penal reform movement of the 19th century, documenting basic and important differences between penitentiary experiments in the antebellum South and the New South. The political struggle to establish a state penitentiary in Wetumpka, near Alabama’s geographic center, began in the late 1830s. Opened in the early 1840s, the prison housed white men and a few women; since slaves were considered property, punishment for most slave crimes was left to their owners. The facility manufactured such goods as boots and shoes, hats, wagons, clothes, and cigars and was expected to compete with civilian industry. Inexperience and faulty administration took their toll, and the prison soon showed large losses. Though the penitentiary was turned over to private leasees in 1846, both systems of management were inadequate-under each, prisoners frequently escaped, manufactured goods never competed successfully with private enterprise, and prisoners suffered high mortality rates from poor living conditions and disease. The state resumed control during the Civil War and finally made a profit because of the heavy demand for manufactured products for Confederate troops-knapsacks, tents, and wagon covers. The prison closed at the end of the war, and in the postwar years the state operated the infamous convict leasing system that allowed private parties to rent and house state and county convicts under contracts. Subject to appalling abuses, the postwar convict lease system was a black mark on the state’s history. A modern study of prison reform, this work demonstrates that Alabama’s penitentiary system was establishedin direct response to the humanitarian prison reform movement that swept the country in the first half of the 19th century. In fact, Alabama’s penitentiary was modeled on the state prison in New York, and many aspects of both northern and southern state penitentiary systems were adopted

Madonna Releases Six New Songs In Response To ‘Rebel Heart’ Album Leak

Unfinished mixes of Madonna’s upcoming album, “Rebel Heart,” appeared on the Internet this week after leakers decided they couldn’t wait until spring 2015 for the Queen of Pop’s “MDNA” follow-up. In the wake of their actions, Madonna randomly released six new songs off the album, immediately available for purchase on iTunes and other online retailers.

“I was hoping to release my new single ‘Living for Love’ on Valentine’s Day with the rest of the album coming in the spring,” Madonna said in a statement. “I would prefer my fans to hear completed versions of some of the songs instead of the incomplete tracks that are circulating. Please consider these six songs as an early Christmas gift.”

The released tracks include “Living for Love,” “Ghosttown,” “Devil Pray,” “Illuminati,” “Unapologetic Bitch” and “Bitch I’m Madonna,” featuring Nicki Minaj. Producers include Madonna, herself, Diplo, Kanye West, Billboard, Dahi and Blood Diamonds. In an Instagram post that has now been deleted, Madonna reportedly described the leak as “artistic rape”:

This is artistic rape!! These are early leaked demo’s half of which wont even make it on my album the other half have changed and evolved. This is a form of terrorism. Wtf!!!! Why do people want to destroy artistic process??? Why steal? Why not give me the opportunity to finish and give you my very best?

“Rebel Heart” will be available for purchase during the first week of March, and Madonna will release more new music on Feb. 9.

U.S. Weighs Response To Sony Hack Blamed On North Korea

By David Brunnstrom

WASHINGTON, Dec 18 (Reuters) – The United States was considering possible options on Thursday in response to a major cyber attack on Sony Pictures blamed on North Korea, amid calls for tougher sanctions on Pyongyang to cut it off from the global banking system.

U.S. experts say options for the Obama administration could include cyber retaliation and financial sanctions but the effect of any response could be limited given North Korea’s isolation.

Hackers who said they were incensed by a film on the fictional assassination of North Korea’s leader attacked Sony Corp last month, leaking documents that drew global headlines and distributing unreleased films on the Internet. It appeared to be an unprecedented victory for Pyongyang and its abilities to wage cyber warfare.

On Wednesday, Sony cancelled next week’s theatrical release of the $ 44 million raunchy comedy, “The Interview”, citing decisions by several theater chains to hold off showing the film. The hacker group that broke into Sony’s computer systems had threatened attacks on theaters that planned to show it.

U.S. government sources said on Wednesday that U.S. investigators had determined that the attack was “state sponsored” and that North Korea was the government involved.

One U.S. government source said Washington may soon officially announce its conclusion that North Korea was behind the attack.

Political analysts, including Joel Wit of the 38 North Korea project at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, questioned how easy it would be to enforce sanctions and to ensure the support of China, which is North Korea’s biggest economic partner, its neighbor and long-time ally.

The United States has a deep economic relationship with China but is sharply at odds with Beijing over Washington’s allegations of cyber spying by Chinese state units on U.S. concerns.

North Korea has denied it was behind the Sony hacking, but security experts in Washington said it was an open secret Pyongyang was responsible.

On Wednesday, the White House National Security Council said the U.S. government was working to bring the perpetrators to justice, and was considering “a range of options in weighing a potential response.”

The Republican chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Ed Royce, said the United States should impose new penalties on the already heavily sanctioned North Korea that would “wall off” the country from the international banking system.

“We have the option … you freeze the accounts at the banks and you tell the institutions ‘you’re either going to do business with the United States, or you can do business with North Korea’,” Royce told the Hugh Hewitt radio show.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation warned theaters and other businesses associated with “The Interview” on Tuesday that they could be targeted in cyber attacks, according to a copy of the document reviewed by Reuters.
