Film Review: ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’

There was no such thing as a “Pooh” until A.A. Milne made it so, although walking, talking teddy bear Winnie’s companion, Christopher Robin, wasn’t just some character the English novelist invented, but a boy based on Milne’s own son, who grew up to resent how the success of “Winnie-the-Pooh” wrecked his childhood. That’s just one… Read more »

Robin Wright’s Stylist Explains the Star’s Cannes Film Festival Fashion — Including Her No-Bra Look!

Robin Wright is the epitome of flawless right now at Cannes Film Festival.

The 51-year-old hit the festival in the south of France this week to promote The Dark of Night, a short film she directed. So far, she has attended a handful events with her fashion-forward style in full force — like this braless slip dress look above — which is why we caught up with her stylist Kemal Harris to get all the details on how she picked her ensembles.

“Cannes is a very traditional event but it takes place in a very bohemian, romantic, vacation-style location, so I tried to align the looks with that energy,” Harris tells PeopleStyle. (Harris also dresses Wright for her gig as Claire Underwood on House of Cards.)

First up, she went to the Opening Gala Dinner in this sheer deep-V look with plain black pumps. “Effortless, sexy and strong outfits” were the goal, notes Harris.

Then, she hit the premiere of Ismael’s Ghosts in a Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello mini. “I loved the contrast of the sharp, tailored shoulders with the stone-encrusted fabric,” says Harris. “Sexy meets strong!”

Then she attended the Women in Motion event in a Stella McCartney suit. “I’m a huge fan of Stella’s tailoring and thought a suit would be a nice way to break up the dress story,” explains Harris. “I flipped the cuffs of the jacket and pants to show a bit more skin and added the leopard Schutz heels to keep it feminine.” (And you can get the shoes — they’re $ 170 on

And, finally, what inspired the supersexy green slip dress by Los Angeles designer Michelle Mason for the Loveless premiere. “I loved its vintage feel but the fabric and fit is totally modern,” says Harris. “The jewel tone of the green inspired me to accent with the raspberry Stuart Weitzman heels and the royal blue velvet Hayward clutch. I topped it off with the Cartier Panthere bracelet because its green emerald eyes matched the dress.”

While this look is incredible body-conscious, it’s also “the most comfortable dress there is because it’s unstructured and the fabric is very light,” says Harris.

Though, she has one stipulation — you have to feel good enough to go braless, as Wright did. “You must have a confident attitude to wear a backless version — it means no bra,” says Harris. “I would also recommend seamless underwear by Commando or Calvin Klein.”

The 8 Stages Of Watching ‘Batman & Robin’ On Netflix

For whatever masochistic reason, the film “Batman & Robin” is trending on Netflix, and has been for a few weeks or so. Helmed and steered clear off a cliff by Joel Schumacher, “Batman & Robin” stars George Clooney as the caped crusader with nipples on his batsuit.

One of the plot points is that Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred is dying, and you see him in various scenes privately wincing from some unknown pain. Well, it’s clear now that just being in this movie was probably physically paining the actor who played Alfred, Michael Gough.

It’s an awful movie. And I fell for watching it.

It began like any other Saturday: no pants, a vague sense that I had embarrassed myself the night before, and the urge to drown my brain in some mindless Netflix viewing.

Thus began the eight stages of watching “Batman & Robin” on Netflix.

STAGE 1 – Optimistic Amnesia

Maybe it wasn’t as bad as I remember! I mean, it was goofy, I remember that much, but maybe it’s goofy in a “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” kind of way.

STAGE 2 - Regret

I’ve made a huge mistake.

STAGE 3 – Confusion

Who green-lit this? OMG, they just go-go-gadgeted ice skates from their boots. And now they’re fighting hockey team henchmen. Did Robin just pull out a laser gun? This feels wrong …

STAGE 4 – Uncomfortable Laughter

The only entertaining thing is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ice puns, because by comparison to the rest of the so-bad-it’s-funny film, those are high quality hilarity.

STAGE 5 – Pun Delirium

You no longer have a reasonable grasp on reality and your brain is quickly liquifying.

STAGE 6 – Full-On Joker Dementia

You’re a zombie. A jolly, smiling zombie.

 STAGE  7 – Discombobulation

The standard notions of direction and position have lost all meaning. You are lost in a multi-dimensional spacial hellscape for which there is no escape.

STAGE 8 - Death

There’s no chance of resuscitation at this point. Like telling your friends you’ll stop out for “just one beer.” Once you’ve begun, it’s already too late.

Anyway, hello from heaven! It’s pretty nice up here! It’s all the Arnie puns you can handle, you get to watch Joel Schumacher try to direct his way out of a paper bag for all eternity, and the batsuits don’t have nipples!

Huge thanks to fellow lover of puns Kate Bratskier for taking a flurry of photos for me and being so … cool.  She snows what’s up. (Also, apologies to Kate Bratskier for the previous sentence.)

Robin Wright’s House of Cards Style: A How-To Guide From Her Stylist

I am drawn to powerful women who prefer pearls to diamonds, dresses to pants and pencil skirts to mini skirts. Some of these women are real, such as Jackie Kennedy or my godmother Dominique. And some are fictional, such as Catherine Banning or Claire Underwood, who is my latest fashion obsession.

Courtesy of Netflix

For the third season of this hit Netflix show, Robin Wright asked her personal stylist Kemal Harris to style Claire Underwood. Thus, Harris enters the picture and takes over Claire’s wardrobe from Tom Broecker, who was costume designer for Season 1, and Johanna Argan who styled all characters during Season 2 and continues to style the rest of the cast in Season 3.

An evolution of Claire’s style makes sense at this juncture in the story. In Season 3, Claire is in a very different headspace. During the first two seasons, she was working hard, always fighting to get to the top. Her wardrobe reflected that — mostly black, very structured pieces, Claire was always ready for battle.

Courtesy of Netflix

In Season 3, she is at the top of the ladder — she is in the White House. Her style illustrates this slight break in her struggle: Everything is a bit softer, a bit more feminine. Instead of her usual black armor, Claire is wearing softer colors, softer fabrics and fuller skirts. Thanks to Kemal Harris, costume designer and red carpet stylist.

Now represented by The Wall Group, Harris is from Vancouver BC. She studied fashion design there, and from the start was interested in the styling aspect of fashion. Working with photographers, she eventually made her way to New York City and Robin Wright became her client. Harris styled her for the red carpet and other events. “The red carpet is very competitive, you can’t wear anything that has been worn before, the focus is on trying to get exclusive looks from designers that are right off the runway” she says. Dressing a fictional character is very different. “There is so much more to consider than if anyone ever worn this dress before… the story arc, the setting, the lighting, the time of day” Harris explains.

Stylist Kemal Harris Courtesy of Kemal Harris

What if you wanted to move from fiction to reality? What are the fashion lessons we can learn from Claire Underwood in Season 3?

1. Claire’s clothes fit her perfectly. Indeed, it is all about fit. Harris had a mannequin built to Wright’s exact measurements so as to be able to tailor outfits to her exactly, without her having to be there for all the fittings. Harris explains: “We tailor almost every piece to her fit; not everyone can afford to do that of course, but having a great tailor makes all of the difference.” Buy one less pair of shoes and instead have your pants and dresses tailored.

2. Claire is not much of a pants girl. Pencil skirts. Full skirts. Fitted dresses. More feminine, and somehow more powerful.

3. Claire is even less of a prints girl. She prefers solid colors. Harris laughs: “We did one striped blouse in Season 3. That is as far as we went. Anything beyond that is too flamboyant for Claire’s character. She is so classic.”

4. Claire’s idea of color remains muted. Deep burgundy, hunter green, violet, light gray, oatmeal. Otherwise, her color palette is black, white and charcoal.

5. Claire is not into jewelry or accessories. If she has to choose, she chooses pearls over diamonds. A single strand of pearls as a necklace, sometimes a single strand bracelet. And of course, her Cartier watch. That has been her trademark from the start. Harris adds “the Cartier team is such a delight to work with, they let me look through their archives for inspiration.”

6. Claire does not own a pair of jeans, or sweatpants. Her version of casual are pants with cuffs (when she does wear pants), and a cashmere sweater. Or a pair of black silk pajamas.

7. Claire’s preferred sleeve length is three quarters. So much so that Harris often has to alter the sleeve length of the outfits to fit this rule. And oh how powerful does this look with long black leather gloves?

8. Claire only wears stilettos — Manolos and Louboutins, specifically. You will not see her in a wedge or flats. Unless she is running of course.

9. Claire loves a statement purse. YSL Sac du Jour is her go-to, although an Hermes Kelly bag does make its appearance. As does a Ralph Lauren beaded clutch.

10. Claire likes contemporary designers. In addition to classics such as Ralph Lauren, Armani, and Burberry, she wears up and comers such as Altuzarra, Jason Wu, Derek Lam.

I ask Harris to describe Claire’s style in three words: “Timeless. Decisive. Feminine.”

Timeless requires no explanation.

Decisive because every look is a complete statement. There’s no flip-flopping on the style direction, there is an underlying strength in the cut and fit. The message is that of a powerful woman. Nothing is superfluous, nothing is fussy. She makes bold choices like the Ralph Lauren gown for the State Dinner based on her poise and confidence.

And feminine: Not the first word that jumps to my mind when I think about Claire, yet so very accurate. Feminine, not in a “mini skirt” kind of way. More in a “my clothes fit so well you can’t help but see my figure” kind of way. No one would ever mistake Claire for a man…

Sean Penn and Robin Wright’s Model Daughter Has Officially Arrived

When your dad is ’90s bad-boy heartthrob Sean Penn and your mom’s The Princess Bride herself, Robin Wright, you’re probably going to be pretty rad (just saying). Dylan Penn is the latest good-looking celebrity offspring to land in the fashion world, nabbing Ermanno Scervino’s spring 2015 ad campaign, per WWD. It’s the first major deal for Dylan, who’s previously posed for Gap outlets and shot a Stuart Weitzman video alongside Poppy Delevingne.

“[Modeling] was something I was really trying to stay away from originally, just because I consider myself a really shy person. I didn’t think I’d be good at it. But after realizing what kind of pay I would get, I decided to swallow that fear and try it out,” she said. “I know that my last name plays a huge part in getting certain jobs. I’m not oblivious to that fact. But I don’t think I would be hired for things if I was really wrong for the part.”

But you know what a famous last name does not get you? Access to any House of Cards secrets. While visiting Mom as she worked on an episode for next season, Dylan was made to leave so as not to find out any secrets. Don’t you just love this little anecdote?

What current celebrity kids do you think have a career modeling or acting ahead of them? I’m putting all my money on Harper Beckham.

PS: If you haven’t seen the first modeling pics from Pierce Brosnan’s son, you need to!

No, These Are Not Photographs…They’re Paintings By Robin Eley

(Noble Refracted (Blue) by Robin Eley. Image courtesy of the artist and 101/exhibit)

Is hyperrealism destined to take over what could soon be the lost art of photography? Amid a sea of abject narcissism, documenting what we eat, what we wear, who we saw and what tomorrow’s weather might be, hyperrealism could perhaps be the last connective tissue to something that once was a great art.

The genre, which is still relatively new in the contemporary art world in the scheme of things, has but a handle of great artists, one of which is not really well known in the United States — Australian based Robin Eley. Mr. Eley as of late, has been an artist-in-residence in Los Angeles, and his first solo show, Prism, debuted this past weekend at the gallery, 101/exhibit. (The show is completely sold-out). The show features an installation comprised of nine new oil on Belgian linen works and five innovative 3D-printed photopolymer sculptures.

(Millhouse Prism, by Robin Eley. Image courtesy of the artist and 101/exhibit)

Here, Eley spoke about his time in LA, what his thoughts are on the art scene and would he ever relocate to the City of Angels permanently.

This is your first LA show and you’ve been working here for a few months? Describe what you thought of LA before you arrived, and what you think about it now.
Robin Eley: Like most Australians, our perception of Los Angeles is heavily skewed by what we see in movies and on TV. We (my wife and I) were however fortunate enough to spend a significant amount of time here in the two years leading up to our move and in that time we gained an understanding of what LA is really like: energetic, creative and customizable to your own personal taste. In short, the longer we are here the more we love it.

What do you think of the LA art scene? Do you have a favorite LA artist?
Eley: To be perfectly honest, 4 months ago I landed in LA and I was literally working the next day. With the exhibition opening looming large on the horizon I have had precious little time to venture out to see much of anything or anyone. What I have been able to glean is the tremendous sense of excitement and anticipation that surrounds the LA art scene at the moment, and I feel honored to have the opportunity to contribute in some way.

Do you want to move here permanently?
Eley: I’ve always held to the belief that the work I make will tell me where
it needs to be made, and for the foreseeable future LA is the place for
that. And while I could never say that any move is permanent in no way am
I approaching my time in LA as temporary. We are most definitely here to stay.

(Miels Refracted (Red) by Robin Eley. Image courtesy of the artist and 101/exhibit)

What was the most challenging part of putting this show together?
Eley: Making half an exhibition in Australia and the other half in the US presents many logistical issues that were tricky to navigate, to say nothing of the challenge of uprooting our lives and moving countries. In terms of the art work, the successful creation of my first series of sculptures proved to be a year long process of research, tutelage and execution that only came together in the final month before the opening. These sculptures, assembled 3D printed pieces, presented some unique technological challenges in terms of the cutting edge software and materials being used but also many of the challenges faced in traditional sculpture, like balance, fit and finish. The result though is exactly what I had envisioned 15 months ago when I began working on the series.

Favorite piece in this show — or ever (in all of your work created thus far).
Eley: Having worked so intimately with the subjects and intensely on the process, the sculptures are very close to my heart. However, if pressed, I have two favorite paintings, Millhouse Refracted (Yellow) and Noble Refracted (Blue). I gravitate towards these in particular, not merely because of the aesthetic result, but the personal connection I have to the time during which I painted them. Millhouse Refracted (Yellow) was the first painting of the series painted right after we made our decision to move and Noble Refracted (Blue) was painted in the final weeks before we left. It’s a visceral feeling that I can’t adequately describe.

Pat Robertson Blames ‘God Of The Heathen’ For Robin Williams’ Suicide

Pat Robertson thinks he knows what could’ve saved Robin Williams: More Jesus.

On his show “The 700 Club” on ABC Family Wednesday, Robertson warned viewers of the consequences of chasing “gods” such as fame and money:

“You see these very popular people in the media who commit suicide like Robin Williams recently and you say, ‘What is the deal with him? What happened?’ You find people who are at the top of the game in music and they’re strung out on drugs. What happened? What was their God?

You see, the god of the heathen are idols, and everything that you seek in life can ruin you unless that something and somebody is God himself.

He can fill your every need, and he won’t disappoint you and you won’t want to commit suicide after you have come to him.”

Williams killed himself at his home near San Francisco on Aug. 11 at the age of 63. He had been battling severe depression and had recently spent time in rehab.

His wife, Susan Schneider, later released a statement saying the actor’s “sobriety was intact” at the time of his death and that he had been struggling with the early stages of Parkinson’s disease.

Robin Thicke Says He’s Trying To Get Paula Patton Back

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton may have separated, but he’s not giving up.

The former high school sweethearts were married for nearly nine years before announcing their split on Feb. 24, and Thicke isn’t ready to let Patton go. Sources told Us Weekly that the “Blurred Lines” singer wanted to save the marriage, but Patton made the choice to end it.

Those claims appear to be true, as TMZ caught up with Thicke as he arrived in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Feb. 27, telling a cameraman, “I’m just trying to get her back.”

According to the website, the couple’s marriage began to fall apart after Thicke’s sexually charged performance with Miley Cyrus at the MTV VMAs in August 2013. Sources say things soured because Patton felt “utterly disrespected” by the performance. And then came the cheating allegations.

While the pair reportedly remain cordial with one another, according to Us Weekly’s sources, Patton is “done with the marriage.”

Robin Thicke debuted the new music video to his single “Feel Good” this week, taking a far tamer direction with the clip than that of his headline-making “Blurred Lines” video. Robin De Jesús Talks ‘Crush To Crushed’ Cabaret Show At New York’s 54 Below

Robin De Jesús has Olympic dreams, at least when it comes to harboring crushes.

“I’ve always had a thing for [U.S. speed skater] Apolo Anton Ohno,” the two-time Tony Award nominee (“In The Heights,” “La Cage aux Folles”) quips. “I have a thing for legs … guys with good quads, calves. Anyone who’s in a constant plié or squat is good by me.”

Infatuation is just one of the many aspects of love De Jesús will explore onstage in “Crush to Crushed,” his new musical act which premieres Nov. 24 at New York’s 54 Below. Still, audiences expecting an evening of Broadway standards with valentine lyrics might be in for a surprise; De Jesús also promises pop, soul and Spanish tunes that not only emphasize romance, but also “the random things that happen afterward.”

Once he began compiling material for the show, the 29-year-old actor took to Facebook, where he asked friends and followers for both their favorite love and breakup songs. Though he soon found that somber ballads about heartbreak comprised the majority of the responses, De Jesús nonetheless hopes “Crush to Crushed” shows “the positive side” of ending relationships, with a solid dose of comedy.

“I think relationships are so amazing, so beautiful and so great to be in … but so are breakups,” De Jesús says. “It’s not just about falling in and out of love, it’s…about the first time your significant other meets your family and your friends, sex and marriage equality. I feel like I’m trying to do the work of both Oprah and Gayle [King].”

De Jesús won’t disclose many of the show’s specifics, though he crooned “I Can Do Better Than That” from Jason Robert Brown’s 2002 musical “The Last Five Years” and a song by up-and-coming composer Blake Pfeil at a press preview of the show in late October. Although a planned mashup of a Patti LuPone standard with a Jay-Z hit (inspired by the actor’s recently-wrapped run in Ben Rimalower’s “Patti Issues”) didn’t make the cut, De Jesús hopes to apply a similarly tongue-in-cheek approach to other musical theater chestnuts throughout “Crush to Crushed.”

“I really want to do a sex medley based on [Rodgers and Hammerstein’s] ‘Carousel,’” De Jesús, who can currently be seen alongside Jeff Goldbum and Laurie Metcalf in Bruce Norris’s “Domesticated” at Lincoln Center, says. “If you listen to the lyrics of ‘Carousel’ and take them out of context, they can be very sexual.”
