Nordstrom Snags Mr Porter’s Sam Lobban for New Men’s Role

Men’s wear continues to be a key focus for Nordstrom.
Two months after opening its first men’s-only store in New York City, Nordstrom has named Mr Porter executive Sam Lobban vice president of men’s designer and new concepts.
This new position is intended to “evolve the retailer’s men’s business,” the company said, and will support men’s merchandising, marketing, content development, store environment, private label and the shopping experience as it relates to men’s wear.
Lobban’s first day will be Tuesday and he will be based in New York. He will report to Pete Nordstrom, copresident of Nordstrom, with a dotted line to Paige Thomas, executive vice president and general merchandise manager of men’s wear.
Jeffrey Kalinsky, Nordstrom’s vice president and designer fashion director, introduced Pete Nordstrom to Lobban about a year ago, saying: “Here is a talented person you need to meet.”
For three years, Lobban has been buying manager for Mr Porter — the U.K. equivalent of divisional merchandise manager. He has been with the men’s division of Net-a-porter for seven years, starting as a member of the launch team and serving as senior buyer and buyer over the course of his career.
During his tenure, he was responsible for overseeing the Exclusive Capsule Collection

Aerie Role Models’ Mothers Appear in New Campaign

Who do role models consider their role models?
For aerie’s role models, who include actress Yara Shahidi, gold medal gymnast Aly Raisman, and curvy model and body activist Iskra Lawrence, the answer is simple: their mothers.

Chloe, Lynn and Aly Raisman.

“We decided to include mothers in the campaign because when we asked our role models who inspires them, their mothers was their number one answer,” said Jen Foyle, aerie global brand president. “And aerie is designed to be worn by any age.”
Shahidi was joined by Keri Shahidi, Raisman posed with her mother, Lynn Raisman and sister Chloe Raisman, and Lawrence took pictures with Wilma Lawrence wearing aerie’s swimwear.

Iskra and Wilma Lawrence

According to Foyle, aerie, which has pushed self-love and empowerment with a no-retouching policy on imagery, these campaigns have had a positive effect on the bottom line. Aerie is up double digits over the last year and saw a large spark within the 30 days of launching the Aerie Real Role Model campaign. The innerwear brand is set to open a store in New York’s SoHo in mid-June.

Paris Jackson Draws Inspiration from Elizabeth Taylor for New Ambassador Role: ‘She Was an Unstoppable Force of Change’

Paris Jackson is drawing inspiration from her late father’s close friend, Elizabeth Taylor, as she tackles her responsibilities as the new ambassador for Taylor’s AIDS foundation.

Jackson, daughter of music legend Michael Jackson, said Taylor’s example has influenced her own philanthropy — especially within the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

“Elizabeth was a real badass,” she told PEOPLE ahead of the Mothers2Mothers and ETAF benefit dinner Tuesday in Beverly Hills, which she attended with brother Prince. “It’s very rare that you see someone with that kind of influence really use their platform for something so important.”

She added of Taylor: “She wasn’t going to let the HIV/AIDS pandemic run wild as it directly impacted her friends and loved ones.”

Jackson, 19, was recently named the new ambassador, in a role she said touches her “familial roots.” Taylor, who died in 2011, was a close friend of Michael’s before his 2009 death and was even the teen’s godmother.

“She was a courageous and unstoppable force of change during a time when the government remained silenced on the ongoing crisis,” Jackson told PEOPLE of Taylor. “She demanded give HIV/AIDS the attention it desperately needed.”

“Her story is an example of how one person can have such a profound and positive effect on the whole of humanity,” she continued.

As part of her duties, Jackson visited Malawi with the organization, where she met with those living in a small village.

“There I met a young mother who told us about her experience and how the mothers2mothers program has helped her journey,” she told PEOPLE of the trip. “If she had gotten medication sooner, she wouldn’t have passed HIV on to her child.”

“It doesn’t have to be this way,” she added. “The programs funded by ETAF are working hard to make sure mothers and families get the care they need.”

A-Rod Says There’s No “Better Role Model” For His Daughters Than J.Lo

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez have seamlessly merged their families and bonded with their kids together. Back in April, the couple took their children to the Dominican Republic for Easter weekend, where J.Lo captured a photo of Natasha, Rodriguez’s 12-year old daughter, with Lopez’s daughter Emme, age 9, on her back. Now, the World of Dance judge is bonding with A-Rod’s youngest girl in a new way.

Rodriguez posted a video of his youngest girl Ella, 9, singing Alessia Cara’s “Scars to Your Beautiful,” alongside Lopez. “Coach JL,” he captioned the pic, tagging famous vocal coach Stevie Mackey, who was playing piano in the background. Who better than the former American Idol judge to school Ella on how to work her vocals? Lopez formed part of the groundbreaking singing competition on-and-off from season 10 in 2011 to the last season in 2015.

The former Yankee recently gushed about Lopez’s influence on his daughters. “There is not a better role model than Jennifer,” he told Extra. “My daughters, they look up to , being a Latina woman in this country, doing the things she has done and the way she pays it forward. If it doesn’t help socially, she is not interested. I can’t even keep up with her jobs. She’s Superwoman, and my daughters, the way they look at her, she has been a great..for them.”

Aside from bonding with family, the two have made sure to spend time alone together with lavish date nights and rigorous workout routines. For Labor Day Weekend, they traveled to Las Vegas to take part in a group fitness class as a team—and shared the experience on social media. “You push me I push you,” wrote J.Lo in a photo of them sitting on yoga mats.

“We love living a healthy lifestyle,” Rodriguez added, “We ride bikes in the city, we run in Central Park, we do yoga, we do Pilates.”

Everett’s homecoming sees him taking up new responsibilities as senior vice president, sales director for Sotheby’s luxury division. While previously only responsible for jewelry, he will now help expand the auction house’s luxury group — including jewelry, watches, wine, cars and “experiences.” Sotheby’s is also looking to get into the fashion game and has begun exploring how sales might include clothing, fashion jewelry and accessories.
The auction house officially unveiled a designated luxury division earlier this year. Before that, its component departments operated autonomously.
Said Everett in a statement: “After briefly turning back to retail I realized my talents and my passion truly align with auction. My favorite part of the job at Sotheby’s revolves around telling the stories about the works of art and the people who cared for them — from the personal collection of Mrs. Paul Mellon to the fascinating history revealed in the Stotesbury Emerald.

Ariz. Woman Sentenced to Die for Her Role in Locking Girl, 10, in 3-Foot-Long Container

An Arizona woman was sentenced to death on Monday for her role in the 2011 murder of her 10-year-old cousin, who suffocated after she was padlocked overnight in a small plastic storage container in the sweltering heat, PEOPLE confirms.

With the jury’s decision, 29-year-old Sammantha Allen becomes the third woman on Arizona’s death row.

She was found guilty of first-degree murder and four counts of child abuse on June 26 in the killing of Ame Deal — who, authorities reportedly said, was forced to exercise in triple-digit summer temperatures and then locked in a 32-inch-long plastic box overnight, likely as punishment because she stole an ice pop.

Ame died from suffocation after being left in the box for six or seven hours.

“Lack of remorse was the biggest thing that played into it for us — that we didn’t see that from Sammantha throughout the whole process,” said juror Anne Schaad, according to the Associated Press and CBS News.

Allen’s defense attorney could not be reached for comment by PEOPLE.

“I want to thank the members of the jury for their time and effort on this case and reaching a difficult, but just conclusion for the senseless murder of Ame,” Maricopa County, Arizona, Attorney Bill Montgomery said in a statement.

The case came to light on July 12, 2011, when police were called to Ame’s home in Phoenix and found her dead inside a plastic storage box. Family members initially said that she liked to hide in the box and must have fallen asleep, according to prosecutors.

Under questioning, Allen told police she knew the girl had been left in the container, the Arizona Republic reports. “There never was intention on killing her,” she said. But she said that her husband, John Allen, “said he was going to get her out.”

In video of her questioning shown at at her trial, however, Sammantha told a detective that she knew Ame was still in the container when she went to sleep, according to the Republic.

Authorities believe Sammantha and John were responsible for forcing Ame into the box and had fallen asleep without letting her out.

Before she was padlocked inside the box, John allegedly forced Ame to do back-bends for two hours and run around the yard despite the searing 103-degree temperature, the Republic reports.

Authorities said Ame was routinely locked inside the plastic box and abused by her caretakers. In one instance, the young girl was forced to eat dog feces and had it rubbed in her face after she failed to pick up a dog’s dropping, according to the Republic.

She was also allegedly made to crush aluminum cans barefoot, eat hot sauce and had been kicked in the face, beaten with a paddle and tossed into a cold swimming pool, according to the AP and CBS News.

Sammantha was sentenced to 76 years for four counts of child abuse, on top of her death sentence.

The AP reported that authorities had found Ame was a unique target of scorn in her family.

“Several forensic interviews were conducted on relative children,” investigators wrote in court records obtained by the news outlet. “The common theme is, Ame is bad, Ame lies, Ame steals, Ame is not allowed to play.”

Ame’s father, David, was sentenced in June 2013 to 14 years in prison for attempted child-abuse for his role in Ame’s torment.

Her grandmother, Judith, was sentenced in September 2013 to 10 years in prison and lifetime probation after pleading guilty to two counts of attempted child abuse.

Cynthia Stoltzmann, who was Ame’s legal guardian and aunt, was sentenced to 24 years in prison and lifetime probation in September 2013 after pleading guilty to two counts of child abuse and one count of attempted child abuse.

John Allen, who is also charged with murder and child abuse, is scheduled to go to trial on Oct 9. He has pleaded not guilty. A message left with his attorney was not returned.

The Complicated Role Race Plays In The ‘Bachelor In Paradise’ Scandal

The “Bachelor” franchise’s longtime problems with race have been cast into a harsh spotlight in the past couple of weeks. With rumors swirling over alleged on-set sexual misconduct between a black male and a white woman, both members of the summer spin-off “Bachelor in Paradise” cast, many viewers have been left unsettled by dueling narratives that play into the most damaging stereotypes about black men and about women.

Warner Bros., which produces the series, put out a statement this week saying that the investigation had been concluded and no evidence of misconduct had been found. Though no charges were filed against the man in question and the show has now resumed filming, the event left a trail of news articles about the man’s purported misconduct and about the woman’s speculated sexual promiscuity.

While, in recent years, the problems with slut-shaming and victim-blaming of alleged assault victims have drawn attention from mainstream media outlets, audiences like the predominantly white Bachelor Nation have less frequently been asked to confront how race plays a role in how we react to allegations of rape.

Historically speaking…when accusations have been made against black men for the rape of white women, and these panics and fears ensue, there’s very often no correlation between the actual incidence of rape and the hysteria around it.
Carina Ray, Professor of African and Afro-American Studies

To get some historical perspective on the particular issues raised by sexual assault cases involving black men and white women, HuffPost’s “Here to Make Friends” podcast chatted with Carina Ray, an Associate Professor of African and Afro-American Studies at Brandeis University, and author of Crossing the Color Line: Race, Sex, and the Contested Politics of Colonialism in Ghana.

“Historically speaking […] when accusations have been made against black men for the rape of white women, and these panics and fears ensue, there’s very often no correlation between the actual incidence of rape and the hysteria around it,” Ray said, pointing to the notorious case of Emmett Till, a black boy who was brutally murdered after he was alleged to have whistled at a white woman. “There’s this huge gap between reality and perception that has historically contextualized this question.”

Black men have, in many historical and contemporary contexts, been falsely depicted or assumed to be sexual threats to white female virtue ― a racist perception that has endangered the lives of black men. Conversely, she added, white men have long enjoyed relative impunity for sexual aggression, especially when women of color, and black women in particular, are the victims.

In an email, Ray elaborated on the point, saying, “We also need to interrogate the presumptions that underline how victimhood is defined and assessed. It’s quite telling that we proceed under the assumption that she is the victim and he’s the perpetrator,” she wrote. “But if we understand the history we must also understand that black men have often been the victim in these rape allegation cases. That is to say that it’s not a question of being cleared, but rather of the very real and often heinous consequences that the accusation itself results in. That might be something that the show’s producers need to think about ― the disparate outcomes that black and white men will face when something like this occurs.”

Try to move beyond a question of, ‘does the history of interracial rape and the way in which black men have often been unfairly accused of rape…say something definitive about what happened in this case.’
Carina Ray, Professor of African and Afro-American Studies

On the podcast, Ray also emphasized that placing the event in context does not mean we can extrapolate exactly what happened in a given incident ― what’s more important, she explained, is understanding the prejudices and baggage that may be influencing our perception and working to counteract them.

“Try to move beyond a question of, does the history of interracial rape and the way in which black men have often been unfairly accused of rape, does that actually say something definitive about what happened in this case,” Ray said. “Instead of doing that, just say, how has that history influenced how people view this particular case?”

To hear more of the conversation, and an interview on the legal aspects of the case with civil rights attorney Lisa Bloom, check out the latest episode of “Here to Make Friends”:

Duffty Joins Polimoda Fashion Institute in Mentorship Role

Keanan Duffty has joined the Polimoda fashion institute in Florence as mentor for the master’s program in fashion styling, effective in April.
Duffty will continue to be based in New York but will make six trips to Polimoda throughout the year to provide advice and educational guidance to students.
The dean of Polimoda, Danilo Venturi, invited Duffty to join the faculty after the designer gave a guest presentation at the opening of the 2017 Polimoda Rendez-Vous lecture program during the Pitti Uomo show in January. Duffty, along with Sex Pistols founder and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Glen Matlock, discussed the intersection of fashion and music and its effect on modern culture, with more than 100 students in attendance. The lecture was followed by two days of intensive workshops with Duffty, for graduate and undergraduate students.
“The global fashion business is currently going through a major paradigm shift,” Duffty said. “I believe it is important for emerging talent to receive guidance from experienced academics and industry professionals in order to navigate that change. I look forward to being a mentor to Polimoda’s very talented design, marketing and fashion business students, bringing my passion for new ideas and a fresh business approach into

Billboard Proclaiming Role Of ‘Real’ Men And Women Sows A Sexist Mystery

A billboard in North Carolina declares a very strong opinion on “real” men and women ― and it has a lot of people talking about gender roles and family households.

The billboard along a Winston-Salem highway reads in large print, with no other context: “Real men provide. Real women appreciate it.”

An anonymous group leased the billboard for at least 30 days, The Associated Press reported.

Bill Whiteheart, president of the advertising company that owns the billboard, told CNN the group that purchased the $ 2,000 ad space wants to stay anonymous.

“We’re not supportive of or in opposition to the message,” Whiteheart told CNN. “We’re just the messenger.”

The billboard’s message, however, has offended some local residents. Boutique owner Molly Grace has created a Facebook event scheduled for Sunday morning to protest the billboard.

“I take it as a very deliberate jab at women who demand equality and demand to be seen as equals and those who are vocal,” Grace told local news station WXII-12. “To me, it’s also a very blatant statement about wanting to silence women and tell them to accept the way that things are.”

But not everyone thinks the sign is offensive. In fact, Grace’s Facebook event page has become a platform for debate on what the sign actually means.

Some argue that the sign devalues women who are breadwinners for their families and single women who provide for themselves. Others say the sign appears to be a derogatory statement against men who don’t provide for their families

“I would assume if you had a husband that loves you and appreciates you and showed it enough to carry your family and kids, that you would appreciate it,” resident Nathan Walin told WHNT News 19. “I don’t know why that would be offensive.

Heated discussions on the Facebook event page often touch on the lifestyle choices of single mothers, stay-at-home mothers and single working women. Grace clarified on Facebook that Sunday’s protest is about the sign’s “choice of words.”

“The sentiment that has upset SO many people…is the notion that these roles, on the billboard at least, are limited by their assigned gender,” Grace wrote on the Facebook event page.

Whiteheart, the owner of the billboard, said an announcement about the billboard would be coming. He didn’t elaborate, according to AP.

Oscar Isaac To Play Title Role In New York Production Of ‘Hamlet’

Shakespearean tragedy has never made us feel so giddy.

The New York Times reports that Oscar Isaac is slated to play the title role in director Sam Gold’s upcoming production of “Hamlet.” The highly anticipated staging will run at New York’s Public Theater from June 20 to Sept. 3, 2017.

Gold, who won a Tony for his direction of Broadway’s “Fun Home,” began work on the production in 2014, which was expected to run this year at Theater for a New Audience’s Polonsky Shakespeare Center in Brooklyn. Because of artistic differences, however, between Gold and artistic director Jeffrey Horowitz, the show was pulled in June 2016.

Now, the play, having controversially switched venues and artistic directors, is officially back on the docket. And we could picture few people better than Mr. Llewyn Davis himself to play the brooding, emo lead.

Oh, and one more bonus: Horatio will be played by Keegan-Michael Key, of “Key and Peele,” in his first New York stage performance. According to Slate, however, Key was classically trained as a Shakespearean actor before veering into improv comedy, so our expectations are pretty high.

Tickets will go on sale for Public members on March 9, with non-member tickets available at an unspecified later date.

Billy Dee Williams Warms Up To Idea Of Donald Glover Reprising His ‘Star Wars’ Role

Billy Dee Williams was once not a fan of actor Donald Glover reprising his famed “Star Wars” character, Lando Calrissian, but it appears his feelings towards Glover have changed.

Williams, who previously told HuffPost in September that he couldn’t “imagine anybody else” taking on the character, opened up in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter about how he recently met with Glover over lunch and why he has become more supportive of the “Atlanta” star taking on the role in the upcoming “Star Wars” spinoff.

“He’s a very delightful young man,” Williams said. “He was doing what normal actors do, they just want to find out what direction they want to take so they gather their information. So, we just sat and talked, and I didn’t want to impose on anything he wanted to do ― he’s got his own ideas, I would imagine…He’s a very talented young man. In fact, I was listening to some of his music and it’s pretty good stuff.”

Despite his comments on preserving his portrayal of the character, Williams went on to tell The Hollywood Reporter that he never envisioned anyone else helming the role.

“Lando has been very much a part of my life for over 30 years,” he said. “When I go out and do conventions and stuff like that, even though people know me from all the other things that I’ve done, certainly [Lando] takes precedence. I just never thought of anybody else being Lando. I just see myself as Lando.”

Adam Pascal Talks Crossword Puzzles, Sobriety And Taking The Role Of Shakespeare In Something Rotten On Tour

2016-12-20-1482264826-9400906-PascalAdamheadshotPhotoJoshLehrer.jpg

I met up with Adam Pascal at the St. James Theatre where he, along with the rest of the talented cast, welcome theatergoers to the Renaissance nightly in the tongue-in-cheek Broadway show Something Rotten. Although the Broadway show will be ending its run on January 1st, Adam, along with Rob McClure and Josh Grisetti, will be taking the show on tour. I met up with Adam Pascal in his dressing room at the theatre. He’s still as good-looking as he was in his Rent days, and was introspective and thoughtful as we covered a wide variety of topics.

Is there something that you bring with you to every dressing room?
A crossword puzzle book. I’m obsessed with crossword puzzles. I find them very soothing and meditative. I’m not someone who puts up pictures and moves into dressing rooms. If it’s a good part, I’m not in the dressing room too much!

You live in California. Is your family still there?
Yes, it’s the real bain of my existence, being separated from them. But moving back here isn’t the right choice for us. We’ve been out there for ten years, so my kids have their lives and their friends out there. This is what I do, and I do love it. And as long as people keep responding positively to the work that I do onstage, then I’m going to strive to do it and keep getting better and expanding my perceived abilities.

What’s the best part of it for you?
Feeling like I did a good job. That’s why I prefer theater to camera work. You get a full complete experience; getting to the end of the story and knowing that you just entertained however many people, hopefully a full house. And you get a sense of accomplishment every day. You don’t get that immediate gratification, that reaction, in film and television work as its very impersonal, and I respond to the feeling of a job well done.

This show is, in part, a spoof on Shakespeare. How you ever performed in a Shakespeare production?
No, I haven’t.

Would you want to?
I don’t think I would. It’s not my thing. To be completely frank with you, I’m not moved by it, I don’t understand the language enough to be moved by the material. So I don’t strive to get to that level where I could be a Shakespearean actor. I think it needs to be in your blood. Maybe I’m too simple, but I’ve seen a number of Shakespearean productions and I was left feeling empty and bored.

2016-12-20-1482264767-2815398-SRAdamPascal0074rscusethisname.jpg

You’ve originated a lot of roles. This role was originated by Christian Borle. Is there a different kind of pressure taking on a role that someone else originated?
I find that there is less pressure, and I think that I prefer taking over a role originated by someone else. If I’m originated something, it’s a lot slower of a process. When you take over for someone, the hard work is done and you just have to slip into the costume, metaphorically speaking. I’ve found that I’m good at interpreting something that someone else originated and making it my own. I find it easier. I’m lazy quite frankly!

I thought you did a great job making it your own.
I wouldn’t know how to copy someone else’s performance; it would feel like stealing. And I love what Will and Christian did, but I wouldn’t know how to do it the way each of them did it because that was unique to them.

You have an accent for this role. Is that fun?
Yeah, I love it. I like to disappear as much as I can into a role. So the more makeup, the more accents, the better. That’s what makes it fun, to be as far removed from me personally as I can get.

How was it performing the day after the election results?
Coming back here, the day after the election, was a difficult experience, and the mood was reminiscent of coming here after 9/11. It was hard to come in that day, and the mood in the theater was grim.

The ultimate message of the show for me was about being true to yourself. What allows you to believe in yourself?
That’s a good question because I have a hard time believing in myself. Every job I get, I say “how am I here?!”. I feel like an imposter. I know that I’m good at it, but I have a hard time internalizing that I’m good at it. And I feel like, at any moment, someone is going to pull back the curtain and say “aha you suck!”. It’s really more of a question of this being what I know how to do. I’ve been successful for twenty years in theater so I’m going to continue to work in theater because it’s where I seem to have the most luck. And I feel incredibly lucky.

You have so many fans.
I grew up playing in rock bands. I will always be colored by the experience of, for many years, playing in empty bars and empty clubs, and what that feels like to pour out your creative soul and be ignored. So, to even acknowledge that I have fans, I feel like “wow there are actually people here.” It will forever be ingrained in my mind that I will walk out there and there will be a couple of people at the bar. So I’m incredibly humbled by my fans; it’s quite amazing and I’m forever thankful for them.

Do you have any kind of mantra that you live by?
Not really. I find that, if you have a mantra, you eventually break it. If you have a code of “this is how I live my life” you eventually break it. I’ve been sober for almost four years, and I definitely was somebody who said something and did another and I spent many years living like that. So now I just try to be good to my family and be honest and act in a way that I didn’t act when I was using. I guess you have a different perspective after you go thru that kind of thing. When you risk losing everything that matters to you, and you somehow come out of it without having lost it, for me, I just try to keep my head down and live my life the way I should live it. And not talk about it or preach to other people. Because no matter what anybody told me, I had to figure it out. And so, like I said, I want to walk the path that I think I need to walk, keep my head down and stay out of other people’s business. Look at the hypocrisy of this world – look at the president-elect – there’s no bigger hypocrite than that.

Hamilton is such a craze and it brings me back to Rent and the phenomena surrounding it, for different reasons than Hamilton, but similar in the sense of it being a movement.

There are such strong similarities. If anything, Hamilton is a bigger phenomenon because of social media and the internet. In 1995, social media didn’t exist. So our show basically was a word of mouth thing. Hamilton went nuclear much quicker because of social media. And yeah, I know some people in the show, and I’ve definitely watched them and was nostalgic about my experience. I was a little envious that they were able to have this type of experience without the incredibly heartbreaking loss that we endured, losing Jonathan Larson the opening night of our dress rehearsal off-Broadway. Our experience was, and always will be, colored by Jonathan dying right when this thing was taking off. I envy them not having this heaviness surrounding them, and being able to enjoy the experience without the sadness we had to deal with.

Something Rotten ends its Broadway runs January 1st. What’s next for you?
Me, Rob and Josh are going out on tour. We start immediately, on Jan 10th, and the following week we officially open in Boston.

See Adam Pascal in Something Rotten on Broadway, or on tour early next year. Get tickets here.

Talking With Emily Tarver About ‘Donny’ And Her First Big-Time Role

“Donny” is a new comedy following real life ad-man, TV personality, and single father Donny Deutsch. Deutsch plays himself as the moronic host of a “Dr. Phil”-style daytime talk show under the direction of his executive producer/adult nanny, Pam (played by Emily Tarver). The show has a unique structure. It’s loosely scripted, and as a result, reads half reality show, half single camera comedy. I had the pleasure of talking to Emily Tarver about the real Donny, her character in the show, and what it’s like getting her first big time recurring role.

This is so cool! We used to hang out at UCB and now we have cool jobs!

Yeah, we’re not poor improvisers working for free!

Is this your first recurring role in a TV show?

Yes, this is my first recurring role that actually turned out to be a recurring role. I’ve booked other recurring roles that didn’t turn out to be recurring. So this is nice!

Tell me about the show and your character. You’re Donny’s executive producer?

Yes, I play the EP of the show within the show. She’s also the person in Donny’s life who keeps him in line and cleans up all the messes that he makes. The show is like “Seinfeld,” where the topic of the show within the show is normally the topic or the theme of the episode.

What has been your favorite topic?

Without giving anything away, he does one where the topic of the show within the show is about men of a later age coming out of the closet after being in a heterosexual marriage. Donny tries to be supportive of that and, in being supportive, he kind of announces that he is gay. That isn’t what he’s saying but while he’s trying to be brave for these people, he sounds like he’s coming out. So I have to clean up that mess. Not that it’s a PR nightmare; it’s just that he isn’t gay.

What’s your character trying to do on the show? Is Pam trying to get out of the show or this is her big shot as a producer?

Donny sees something in her and tells her that she is to come with him wherever he goes. And, over time, she grew into this position of alpha female and his producer of things. In real life, Donny surrounds himself with very strong women who put him in his place. And so I’m the shining symbol of that. I don’t put up with his shit and he doesn’t impress me. But she enjoys the challenge and she enjoys smacking his hand when he does something so Donny.

The show has a different type of look to it. Parts of it feel like a reality show. Others feel like “The Office.”

I definitely think that was done on purpose. A lot of people don’t know Donny or what he is about. People are like: is he an actor? A host? So the show’s trying to represent a lot of different genres. And because he’s playing himself, that reality feeling you get is because you can’t pin him down. It might be confusing for some people, but I think it’s cool to watch a show and go, “What is this?” Because the only answer is: Oh! It’s something new!

It does read very new because when you watch it, Donny doesn’t feel like an actor. He feels like the real thing and everybody else is acting around him. Was it weird acting with a guy playing himself?

Yeah! And I don’t want to toot Donny’s horn too much, but he’s just a genius and he’s so good at everything he tries. I think a big part of it is his extreme confidence. When we filmed the pilot presentation, he was giving me notes on my acting. And I was like, “Ahhh, OK.” And he was right about a lot of stuff. Being on set with him, he’ll have notes for actors and production and story and he’ll he right a lot of the time.

I also noticed that this season of TV is centered around older, distinguished antiheroes, like “The Grinder” or “Grandfathered.” “Donny” seems like a different take on it. Do you think this is a wave?

I think people are quick to categorize things because that’s how our brains work. These shows are so different and so good. And I don’t think “Donny” can be put into that category based on the lead because he’s surrounded by so many women. And Donny himself is such a feminist. He wants to tell women’s stories and have female perspectives on his life at all times. And the show reflects that. Donny doesn’t even have a male best friend.

How is doing press? Is this your first time doing big time junkets and stuff?

Yeah, we went to LA. It was just Donny and me. It was really fun.

What’s that like?

Well, you sit on stage in front of a bunch of long tables with people from different blogs on their laptops. And they have a bunch of questions. Then you go to a little room with 12 cameras. And a person has a bunch of questions. Luckily, Donny is used to it. I’m there as Emily, but also as Pam. Emily and Pam are very similar in terms of how they treat Donny. And our interaction is very organic. It’s actually been that way since my callback for the show. I had to do it with Donny while everybody on the show watched.

Are you and Donny on a texting basis?

I actually don’t have his number. And I haven’t asked for it, because I don’t want him to think that I want it. I want him to ask me for my number. And then he can be impressed that I have a 212 number.

Well, that’s a Season 2 thing.

Yeah, Season 2 for sure.

That’s odd. He seems like a guy who would need to be in constant communication with the people working close with him.

Well, I think he’s scared of me. I think he thinks I’m way cooler than him. I bet he thinks if he texted me it would bother me. I’ll never tell him that I think he’s cool. He can read it in your article.

Emily Tarver stars as Pam in USA’s “Donny“ premiering Tuesday, Nov. 10th at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Mike Epps Talks ‘Soaking’ Up Richard Pryor Role, Hints At Timeline

After a long casting process, it appears Lee Daniels’ Richard Pryor biopic is set to begin production soon.

The late comedian will be played by Mike Epps. According to Epps, the all-star cast — which includes Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey, and Kate Hudson – is scheduled to begin filming in March 2016.

“We start prepping in January, and start shooting in March,” he said during an interview with The Huffington Post. “Eddie Murphy’s playing my father, Oprah Winfrey’s playing my grandmother, Kate Hudson’s playing my girl, and I’m playing Richard Pryor.”

Epps went on to share how preparing for the role of Pryor, who died in 2005, has required him to delve into the many layers of the late comedy legend.

“Right now, I’m just really soaking it up. I’m just a sponge right now,” he said. “Just doing a lot research on the history of Richard Pryor. Trying to figure out the things that I need to figure out to play certain scenes. How I need to feel. What state of mind I need to be in, because this guy was a roller coaster, man. It wasn’t easy. [He was] close to something that’s scientific — broken down into a whole lot of different ways.”

As the 44-year-old actor gears up for the iconic role, he is also busy promoting season 2 of Starz’s original series, “Survivor’s Remorse.” The comedy series, which is produced by NBA superstar LeBron James and follows the life of a young professional basketball star, Cam Calloway (played by Jessie T. While the show addresses relevant topics surrounding the lives of professional athletes, Epps — who plays Calloway’s uncle, Julius — says the show isn’t just relatable to people in the world of sports.

“The whole show itself is relatable to anybody that’s in show business because it’s ‘survivor’s remorse,’” he said. “So the whole thing about money, family, and friends, and love and all that — it all ties in together.”

Usher), as he navigates his newfound fame, wealth, and personal relationships.

Taye Diggs To Star In Lead Role In Broadway’s ‘Hedwig And The Angry Inch’

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Taye Diggs will return to Broadway for the first time in a decade in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” stepping into the musical’s lead role after current star Darren Criss exits in July.

The revival, which launched last year with Neil Patrick Harris and walked away with four Tony Awards, has maintained a rotating roster of stars since Harris left, bringing in actors including Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, original star John Cameron Mitchell and Criss for stints in the show. No actor has since yielded the high box office that Harris brought to the show.

Diggs’ turn in the musical will mark the first time the role has been played in a major New York production by African-American actor; prior performers to play the part in the show’s Off Broadway incarnation included current Tony nominee Michael Cerveris and Ally Sheedy. Diggs, who launched his career in the original Broadway production of “Rent” and has also appeared on Broadway in “Chicago” and “Wicked,” last appeared on a New York stage in a 2005 Off Broadway production of “A Soldier’s Play.”

Also the star of TNT drama “Murder in the First,” Diggs will star opposite Rebecca Naomi Jones in “Hedwig.” He begins his 12-week run in the production July 22 after Criss wraps up his engagement July 19.

“Hedwig” will also take the spotlight at the Tony Awards next month when Mitchell, the co-creator of the show, wins a special Tony Award for his performance in the show earlier this year.

Deborah Cox Describes ‘The Bodyguard’ Musical Role As A ‘Dream Of A Lifetime’

The musical theatre adaptation of Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar-nominated film, “The Bodyguard” will make its North American debut with its Fall 2016 national tour.

The award-winning musical, which premiered at London’s Adelphi Theatre in Dec. 2012, will star Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Deborah Cox as Rachel Marron (previously played by X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke) and directed by British theatre director Thea Sharrock.

Cox is keeping busy this summer. In addition to the announcement of her new musical gig, she is prepping the Summer release of her forthcoming album “Work Of Art,” and currently stars in a musical based on of the life of Josephine Baker. Cox will also co-host the Clear Channel Spectacolor’s simulcast of the 2015 Tony Awards on June 7.

In an exclusive statement to The Huffington Post, the multi-talented Canadian native says she is excited about her involvement in all three projects.

“I am honored to be chosen to co-host and perform with Justin Guarini for The Tony Awards in Times Square simulcast event,” she wrote.

“I am also honored to represent two of the most iconic and historic women of the 20th century with the Broadway bound ‘Josephine’ project and now the ‘Bodyguard.’ As a performing artist, it’s a dream of a lifetime to now have an opportunity to not only sing, but to also feature my acting and dancing talents. What a blessing!”

Additional casting and tour cities for “The Bodyguard” will be announced at a later date.

Why Miley Cyrus Is This Woman’s Non-Straight, Non-Binary Role Model

By Kelsey Marshall for YourTango.com

If you haven’t heard, Miley has been up to a lot more than sticking her tongue out and hanging out in her underwear.

In the course of two short days, Miley has kicked-off her foundation for homeless LGBT youth, the Happy Hippie Foundation, and given an interview to Out magazine where she discussed not identifying with any particular gender. She also cavalierly stated she’s had sexual relationships with women.

Miley isn’t playing around anymore. And I’m very happy about it.

 I’m downright enthusiastic.

In the wake of the complete Bruce Jenner tabloid debacle and subsequent (incredibly powerful and inspiring) interview, gender identity has been forced into the forefront of the public debate.

This is no less than amazing. This is something we should ALL be talking about.

Now more than ever, black and white are your two options for any kind of opinion. You either love the Kardashians or you hate them. The dress is either black and blue or it’s white and gold. Everyone should have guns or no one should.

Comment culture has made us into a strongly-opinionated fleet that leaves no room for middle ground. The Internet has taken something extremely valuable away from us: it’s taken away our gray area.

I don’t mean for this to be taken out of context. I am not referring to a gray area between right and wrong, between yes and no. I’m not referring to a gray area where I say one thing and mean another.

I’m talking about a gray area of identity and ownership.

What Miley is doing is perfectly demonstrating how to mean what you say and expect no less than to be taken seriously for it.

When she says she doesn’t identify as a girl or a boy, that in fact she would rather identify as nothing, then that’s exactly what she is. Even calling her “gender-queer” is a bit of a stretch, since she’s not using that word to describe herself.

It’s a complicated thing for a celebrity to identify themselves. No doubt Miley’s words will be taken out of context, flipped, stretched and contorted beyond recognition.

But she doesn’t care — and that’s a very valuable lesson.

Young people, especially young women, grow up with so much uncertainty. We’re told who to listen to, who to admire, what behavior is “slutty” and what behavior will grant us access to a life deemed acceptable.

There’s not a lot of room for understanding your own body, your own intentions, desires and goals.

You’re identified at birth with a gender that carries an incredible amount of social weight. And for some, that weight is so heavy that suicide is the only answer.

When you’re faced with so many decisions that already seem made for you, right down to your gender identity, speaking your own truth is an incredibly terrifying task.

When Bruce Jenner spoke out about his transition to becoming a woman, he was called attention-seeking. Yet, he did it anyway and adamantly. No one should have to be concerned with the outcome of their truthful words or how others might hear them.

The part that matters is the truth.

I can understand Miley’s struggle with gender. I’m a lesbian, and gender and identity is something I struggle with every day. To hear a young woman who faces so much criticism in her everyday life state, “I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: Being a girl isn’t what I hate; it’s the box that I get put into” is incredibly powerful to me.

In fact, it’s freeing.

It isn’t just young people she’s standing up for. It’s every single person that’s ever felt stifled by an identity they were assigned at birth or even an identity they gave themselves. It’s standing up for me and the times when I want to agree that I find a man sexually attractive and don’t say it, in fear that I’ll misrepresent my own identity.

Miley isn’t representing or misrepresenting any identity. She’s just being herself.

Whatever label you put on yourself or the world puts on you, it doesn’t mean half as much as the what you feel inside and your pride to express every worthy thought you have.

Because we’re all worthy of that — celebrity or not. We’re worthy enough to be proud of what makes us unique and what makes us not quite fit into a box. We’re worthy enough to find our own identity and be okay with the parts of ourselves that still might not fit tidily under that umbrella.

What we really need to learn is this: labels and identities aren’t one-size-fits-all. Neither are people.

You’re never going to be just one thing — and that’s f*cking awesome.

Josh Hartnett Lost Out On Another Role Because He Passed On ‘Batman’

Josh Hartnett regrets passing on “Batman,” but not for the reason you may think.

Speaking to HuffPost Live on Wednesday, the actor explained that he’d met with Christopher Nolan while the director was casting for the 2005 installment, but he’d actually hoped to discuss his next film, “The Prestige,” instead.

“[‘Batman’] was not what I was interested in,” Hartnett recalled. “I really wanted to convince him that when he did the ‘The Prestige,’ maybe hire me.”

“And then, of course, as time went on, he ended up hiring the guy who he hired to play ‘Batman’ to play in ‘The Prestige,'” Hartnett continued, referring to Christian Bale.

The experience served as a teachable moment for the “Penny Dreadful” star.

“I realized much later that this is a relationship business,” said Hartnett, adding that he “regret[s] not forming a relationship with a great filmmaker [Christopher Nolan].”

“That was not necessarily where my head was at the time,” he concluded.

How One Designer Is Using ‘Role Models Not Runway Models’ To Empower Women

While New York Fashion Week featured many famous faces during its opening night on Feb. 12, it was the lesser-known ones that may have made the biggest impact.

Designer Carrie Hammer’s runway show “Role Models Not Runway Models” was a highlight of NYFW for the second year in a row. “Role Models Not Runway Models” featured female CEOs, writers, actresses and entrepreneurs.

“I think it’s important that women understand that beauty comes from power, personality, and accomplishments,” Hammer said. “The women we put on the runway are all at the top of their respective fields.”

The models included Brandthropologie CEO Billee Howard, Nexus founder Rachel Cohen Gerrol, senior editor of Bustle.com Marie Ospina and Director of Public Affairs at Coca-Cola Missy Owens.

In 2014, Hammer’s show featured the first model in a wheelchair in NYFW and this year she included “American Horror Story” actress Jamie Brewer, the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway.

“I think this challenges what we’ve been seeing for way too long. Uniformity. It’s time to see not just diversity — but reality,” Hammer said.

Petition Calls For Recast Of Scarlett Johansson’s Role In ‘Ghost In The Shell’

A recent petition is calling for Scarlett Johansson’s role in “Ghost in the Shell” to be recast on the grounds of whitewashing.

Earlier this month, Variety reported that Johansson had signed on to star in DreamWorks’ big-screen adaptation of the anime adventure, focusing on the story of a covert operations unit in the Japanese National Public Safety Commission and following the lead protagonist, Major Motoko Kusanagi.

While the 30-year-old certainly has had box office success starring in action films, like Marvel’s “Avengers” series and “Lucy,” after the announcement was made critics called the casting “whitewashing” due to the comic’s Japanese origins.

Now, there is a Care2 petition requesting DreamWorks consider recasting the role.

“What concerns me is the fact that minority actors are so rarely given opportunities in big-budget leading roles,” petition author Julie Rodriguez said in a press release sent to The Huffington Post. “It’s a self-defeating cycle: Hollywood insists viewers won’t be drawn unknown minority actors, but they’re never given the chance to break out of a narrow set of background roles to prove themselves. ‘Ghost in the Shell’ could have been a perfect opportunity to buck this trend, but instead promising actresses are being passed over.”

The petition has a goal of 14,000 signatures and has already collected more than 13,000.

Others have voiced issue with the fact that an Asian-American actress was not chosen. Marissa Lee, co-founder of the entertainment equality group Racebending, wrote a blog post in response to DreamWorks’ decision, explaining that it’s a missed opportunity for inclusive representation.

“Ultimately, ‘Ghost in the Shell’ is a story about what makes us human. Having access to powerful media representation is key for minorities to be seen as human. As a successful white actress, Scarlett Johansson has been privileged to play powerful women characters in action films. ‘Ghost in the Shell’ was a chance for an actress of Asian descent to have that same opportunity.”

A representative for DreamWorks was not immediately available for comment.

Why Lena Dunham Is My Role Model

These days, it’s not really that unique for a woman to be running a television show and acting in it. We’ve seen it be done many times over the years. But, what makes Lena Dunham (writer, director, creator, Wonder Woman behind HBO’s Girls) stand out so much to me is her authenticity. It was clear from the first time I watched her show, even though I was a freshman in high school and didn’t understand about half of the cultural references, that she was different. That day, I laid eyes on the woman who would influence many of my ideas, words and fashion choices and ultimately inspire me to just be, well, me.

Of course, throughout my whole life, I was always “me.” I didn’t have a body switch incident (maybe one day). But, reading Lena Dunham’s honest tweets about everything from serious business like the Woody Allen rape allegations to simple things like meeting a dog named Yvonne made having clear opinions, things scarcely seen in high school, so desirable. Though I’ve never met a dog named Yvonne (maybe one day), Lena just gets it. I always used to feel that by letting the world know what I was thinking, I was being overindulgent, and my opinion would be discarded or rejected by society. Lena Dunham has taught me an important lesson: Who cares?

Lena, or L-Duhnz, as I called her in the dream I had where we ran into each other at a local Starbucks, conjures honest but hardly ever seen on television themes and incidents into her show, like the human body, and lets them loose in the flesh (no pun intended). She even delves into her own past of growing up with OCD and illustrates it beautifully, making me feel like I fought that battle with her even though I didn’t. She has shown me that everybody heals differently and there are many ways to cope with life’s difficulties. Before watching Girls, it never occurred to me that talking about your feelings wasn’t the only way to let them go. That is why I felt a constant tornado of teen angst and feelings, because I don’t particularly enjoy talking. But, Lena Dunham’s character Hannah Horvath’s experiences let me know that instead of having to assemble careful sentences to somebody I don’t like, I can dance to Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own,” or sing “Wonderwall” in the bathtub and feel just as liberated.

I know Lena Dunham may not seem like your average role model. I still remember the look on my mother’s face when I accidentally let it slip that I had already watched two seasons of Girls. We all make sacrifices. But Lena Dunham has a three-dimensional, genuine vibe that will always find her place in my heart to be above all others. Yes, I know she writes scenes where she is completely naked doing the dirty. But, do you do it with your clothes on? Yes, I know she writes scenes where she snorts cocaine off a toilet seat. But, has no twentysomething in New York ever snorted cocaine? America has been afraid to approach “touchy subjects” in their media, and only ever showing modesty and purity is making people ashamed of their own bodies and allured by activities deemed too inappropriate for television. Also, if you recall, I didn’t say my lesson from Lena Dunham was “please everyone.”

I remember a line from Girls where Shoshanna says something about having to break a few eggs to accomplish what she wanted to do and it stuck in my head. To this day I can’t look at an egg without thinking of Shosh’s message. Lena Dunham showed me that you can either follow the rules and be good, or you can follow your dreams and be great.

Stephen Colbert Reveals His Role In ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’

Fans of “The Colbert Report” know that Stephen Colbert is one of the most devoted and knowledgeable fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. He geeked out about “The Lord of the Rings,” and has continued his fan obsession into the new “The Hobbit” trilogy. On “Late Show with David Letterman,” he revealed that he scored a role in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

At first, Letterman didn’t believe Colbert’s claim that he was in the film. “I’m kind of the breakout star of ‘The Hobbit,’ Dave,” Colbert insisted. “I don’t want to tell anybody where I am, but I am in it.” He even encouraged Letterman to check out the IMDb page for the film if he didn’t believe him.

After some prodding, Colbert provided a few details of how it happened, as well as a tease where fans can look for him. “I and my wife and my two boys were invited down to New Zealand to play around with the folks in ‘The Hobbit’ by Peter Jackson,” he said. “We went down there, and we’re in a scene in Laketown. I don’t want to say where in the movie. It’s kind of a ‘Where’s Waldo?'”

Fans can look for Stephen Colbert and his family in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” when the film opens nationwide on December 13. “The Colbert Report” airs Monday through Thursday at 11:30 p.m. EST on Comedy Central, while “Late Show with David Letterman” airs every weeknight at 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS.
