CRÈME DE LA CRÈME: Tata Harper Skincare is bringing her eponymous natural luxury skin care to Le Bristol Paris hotel, where starting on Sept. 27 and 28 she will inaugurate a first spa room in the City of Light.
“It’s a room and a little lounge,” she told journalists in Paris during a lunch on Thursday. “We’ve developed specific protocols — for face, beauty, everything — for our Bristol client.”

People Are Crushing On This Pakistani Doctor Who Needs A Room In New York City

Meet Rehan Munir. He’s a 26-year-old med school grad from Pakistan who also happens to be a model.

Here’s Munir in a TV commercial for Hush Puppies Pakistan.

Talk about a well-rounded guy, right?

Munir told HuffPost he hopes to do rotations in various hospitals across the U.S. to gain experience. He’s currently looking for housing in New York City, though ― a search he called “quite the ride.”

A post shared by Rehan Munir (@rehanmunir) on

Some of Munir’s New York-based friends recommended he post an ad on Gypsy Housing, a closed Facebook group for people looking for housing and roommates, so earlier this month, Munir did just that.

“I’m Rehan and I’m looking to rent a furnished room on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side or Midtown Manhattan,” the post read

“I’m professional, friendly and easy to live with,” he added. “Most of all, cleanliness is of utmost priority to me. Please let me know if you have any leads.”

In response, the 26-year-old got way more than housing offers:

“You can totally find a room for $ 800! Just will have more than a few roomies, so be warned,” one woman wrote. “Also, and I apologize if this is inappropriate, but umm … boyyyy you fine!”

Others got real bold and straight-up proposed to Munir:

The post had 363 “likes” at last count and got plenty of media attention. Munir said he never expected such an “enthusiastic” response when he wrote the listing.

“It was pretty overwhelming,” he told HuffPost. “I wrote it and the next day I wake up and I see my post has been inundated with messages and it’s reached a number of blogs locally and internationally. I found it hilarious! The Internet is really an unpredictable place.”

Though people have been “very helpful and kind” in helping Munir look for a room, he’s still mulling over his housing options.

And to answer the question on seemingly everyone’s minds: Yes, your boy is single.

“I’m single but trying to focus on my career at the moment,” he told HuffPost.

In ‘Beatriz At Dinner,’ An Immigrant Walks Into A Room Of Trump-Minded Hedonists

Salma Hayek didn’t want me to leave before should could invoke Donald Trump

We were chatting early last week at the New York junket for her new movie “Beatriz at Dinner.” As is standard in the world of Hollywood promotion, I’d been granted a criminally brief 10 minutes with Hayek. She waxed poetic about the melancholic film, and before we knew it, our time together ended.

I was well aware of the Trumpian undertones in “Beatriz at Dinner,” a dark comedy about a Los Angeles massage therapist slash spiritual healer exhausted by life. Beatriz is an immigrant with an abundance of love that the world often doesn’t reciprocate. When her car breaks down at the home of a wealthy client (Connie Britton), she’s invited to stay for a meal in honor of a billionaire real-estate tycoon (John Lithgow) whose luxury hotels are causing environmental mayhem in developing countries.

“Please help it,” she said, referring to the movie, as I stood up to leave. “Help us. We’re very small. It’s so strange, also ― we’re going to encounter a lot of pushback from the other side.”

I needn’t ask what she was referring to. Without using the president’s name or referencing real-life politics, “Beatriz at Dinner” indicts Trump’s values. As more guests arrive for the feast, Beatriz feels alone in a sea of money-hungry white faces, some of whom mistake her for the help. The women later mock a female reality star’s body. And in a moment evoking the Minnesota dentist who, in 2015, killed Cecil the lion, the aforementioned tycoon brags about having hunted and killed a rhinoceros for sport. He passes around a photo of the dead animal like it’s a trophy.

“My character, when the movie begins, she’s in despair about how human beings behave and in frustration about where the world is going and the fact that there’s nothing she can do about it, as hard as she has tried all her life,” Hayek said. “Some of the things we have learned to make ourselves interesting and popular socially are kind of sad. Going after another woman collectively like that and enjoying it ― it’s very sad.”

Written by Mike White and directed by Miguel Arteta, who are collaborating again after their extraordinary work on “The Good Girl” and HBO’s “Enlightened,” “Beatriz at Dinner” features a career-best performance from Hayek. In subtle ways, she telegraphs the complexity of feeling drained amid a clique that not only looks and thinks differently, but seems largely uninterested in her perspective. What starts as a comedy of manners becomes an aching drama about humanity’s segregation, and one of the finest roles of Hayek’s 29-year career.

Despite Hayek’s worries, “Beatriz at Dinner” isn’t likely to receive much Trumpian fuss ― it’s too small of a movie for any real controversy. And anyway, it’s too delicate to piss people off. But it shouldat least, spark conversations about the way we treat one another and how to find hope in a world that doesn’t often prioritize equality. As a Mexican actress who has been outspoken about her distaste for the Trump phenomenon, it’s also a personal story.

“I related to this, but I think she’s not even that uncomfortable about being in a room looking different,” she said. “I think this deeper type of loneliness is being alone in a room with people that all think different than her, to the point that she can barely follow what they’re talking about. She’s like, ‘Wait, am I understanding? Is this really what they’re saying?’ And I think so many of us have experienced that.”

“Beatriz at Dinner” is now playing in limited release.

Jaden Smith Claims the Four Seasons ‘Spiked’ His Pancakes with Cheese and Kicked Him Out of His Room

On Saturday, Jaden Smith recounted some hiccups during his stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto on Twitter, claiming they “spiked” his pancakes with cheese.

Smith, who is in Toronto filming his upcoming romantic drama Life In A Year, first claimed the hotel made him “want to throw up.”

“The Four Seasons In Toronto Just Made Me Want to Throw Up On MySelf,” he first wrote to his six million followers on Saturday.

The fashion boundary-pusher continued, “I Hope The Four Seasons In Toronto Puts Me On The No Stay List.”

He then fired off two more claims that elaborated on how his hotel stay had turned sour.

“The Four Seasons In Toronto Spiked My Pancakes With Cheese, I’m Surprised I’m Still Alive,” he tweeted, followed by, “After They Kicked Me Out Of My Room.”

FROM PEN: Watch: David Oyelowo on His New Film ‘A United Kingdom’

Smith ceased his tweets after his final claim of the hotel kicking him out of his room.

The Four Seasons and Smith’s rep did not respond to a request for comment.

Deadline reported in March that Smith had been cast opposite Cara Delevingne in Life in a Year. The plot follows a 17-year-old boy who, after learning his girlfriend is dying from cancer, sets out to give her their entire life together, in the year she has left. Dad Will Smith is producing the Mitja Okorn-directed film that will also star Terrence Howard and Nia Long.

Blake Shelton Says Walking Into a Room with Girlfriend Gwen Stefani ‘Builds Your Ego Up’

It’s a round of Voice musical chairs!

Alicia Keys is leaving NBC’s hit singing competition show as a judge next season, and while Blake Shelton is sad to see her go, it sounds like the country star doesn’t believe it’s goodbye forever.

“I’ve looked ahead,” said Shelton during an interview with ET on Monday. “This is like those Harry Potter movies. Those characters that you think are gone, then they come back. Alicia … I’ve already looked ahead on the script, and they have her coming back.”

“Seeing as I’m his main competition, I’m sure he’s happy to see me go,” added Keys, 36. “So he doesn’t have to feel such a stress and pressure every time he works with me.”

Shelton also sounded off on his girlfriend Gwen Stefani exiting the show next season (Jennifer Hudson and Miley Cyrus are taking a turn in the red chairs instead).

Just “being in the vicinity of her is unbelievable,” gushed Shelton, who had Stefani by his side Sunday night while he picked up the top country artist award at the Billboard Music Awards. “Oh my God, at some point, it kinda builds your ego up when you walk into a room with Gwen. But also it’s a crashing blow to your ego when you realize all the cheers and people shouting at ya. You realize it’s not you, it’s her! But it’s still exciting at the same time.”

Shelton jokingly confessed he’s relieved Cyrus and his pal Kelly Clarkson — who’s joining the show in 2018 — are on different seasons.

“I can tell you that I used to think Miley Cyrus would be the person that talks the most, ever in the history of this show,” he said. “Now that they brought in Kelly Clarkson … oh my God. Oh my God. Thank God they are at least on different seasons because my ears would fall off my head. There would be no oxygen left in the room. Neither one of them can stop talking.”

Leonardo DiCaprio Remembers TV Dad Alan Thicke As The Coolest Guy In The Room

Before Leonardo DiCaprio was Leonardo DiCaprio, he was a child actor who scored a recurring role on the beloved TV sitcom “Growing Pains.” He played Luke Brower, a homeless teen who was taken under the wing of the Seaver family in the show’s final season.

DiCaprio obviously went on to bigger and better things, but he’s spoken about his time on the ABC series fondly. Following the death of Alan Thicke, who played TV dad Jason Seaver for seven seasons, DiCaprio shared a touching tribute to the actor on Facebook.

“Alan was a devoted father, husband, friend and role model,” he wrote. “He knew how to harness the power of the entertainment industry to be a positive influence in so many lives — including mine. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity I had to work with Alan early in my career.”

“I’ve seen him a number of times over the years and when Alan Thicke walked in the room, quite frankly, no one was cooler,” DiCaprio wrote.

Thicke suffered a fatal heart attack on Tuesday while playing hockey with his son Carter. He was pronounced dead later that night at at Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Burbank, California.

Those touched by Thicke’s legacy, including his son Robin Thicke and fellow “Growing Pains” cast members, memorialized the actor with emotional tributes across social media

Gap Tests Room Service in Virgin Hotels Chicago

ORDERING IN: Gap room service?
The specialty chain is testing a free delivery service for guests at the new Virgin Hotels Chicago which opened last January, becoming the first property up and running in Richard Branson’s Virgin Hotels division.
Virgin Hotels was a natural for Gap, considering the retailer already works with Virgin Hotels on content for stylby, and also provided denim jeans to uniform male employees of the hotel’s Commons Club.
“Traveling can be full of unexpected surprises,” said Tricia Nichols, global lead of consumer engagement and partnerships for Gap. “You could come to Chicago not prepared for the weather, or maybe lose your luggage, or maybe you want to go for a jog,” and need a sports bra or racing top.
The service is provided through Gap’s reserve-in-store program where you can shop online and pick up the order in a store. At the hotel, guests access gap.com via Lucy, the hotel’s mobile app or by visiting virginhotels.com, and then select the styles through the reserve in store button. The hotel concierge takes it from there, picking up the order, bringing it to the guest’s hotel room and placing it in a closet within the hour. If the guest decides not to

Cerebral Monitoring in the Operating Room and the Intensive Care Unit

Cerebral Monitoring in the Operating Room and the Intensive Care Unit

In spite of today’s increasing body of knowledge in regard to central nervous func- tion and/or the mode of action of centrally active compounds, little is done to monitor those patients which are at risk of cerebral lesions either in the OR or in the ICU. Due to the inconsistency of reports regarding the application and the benefits computerized EEG and/or evoked potential monitoring will bring to the clinician, physicians still are reluctant to get involved with a technique, which they think, will have little or no effect on the outcome of a patients well being. However, due to the development in computer technology, data acquisition and comprehension, it now is possible to monitor such a viable organ as the Central Nervous System (CNS) on a routine base without being a specialist in neurology or electroencephalography. Thus, the book is intended to guide the clinician to use BEG and evoked potential monitoring in a day to day situation, without going too deep into technical details. As an improvement of cerebral care is needed, various representative cases underline the interpretation of EEG power spectra and evoked potential changes in regard to the underlying clinical situation. It is hoped that this book will serve as a guide to anyone who considers cerebral monitoring a necessity in today’s patient care. This may be the anesthesiologist, the intensive care therapist, the nurse anesthetist as well as the medical personnel in the lCU setting.

Robert Durst’s Lawyers Allege FBI Illegally Searched Hotel Room

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Attorneys for millionaire Robert Durst, who faces a California murder charge, say Durst’s arrest in New Orleans on weapons charges was invalid, in part because the FBI searched his hotel room illegally.

Durst, who waived extradition to California on the murder charge, was arrested last month at the J.W. Marriott hotel in New Orleans. He is set for a Thursday hearing on Louisiana charges of possession of a firearm by a felon and illegally possessing a firearm along with an illegal drug. Items recovered from his hotel room included a .38-caliber revolver and about 5 ounces of marijuana, according to court records.

A sworn statement supporting the warrant “contains a material misrepresentation designed to cover up the FBI’s unlawful, warrantless search of Mr. Durst’s hotel room,” according to a copy of a motion filed by Durst’s attorneys.

The motion asking Magistrate Harry Cantrell to throw out the warrant will likely be argued Thursday. Durst’s attorneys also have asked the judge to subpoena Fox News Channel’s Jeanine Pirro, a former New York prosecutor who investigated Durst in connection with the disappearance of his first wife in 1982, and all video surveillance for March 14 and 15 from the Marriott and Los Angeles Police Department.

The FBI and Los Angeles police, who have a warrant accusing Durst of killing his friend and spokeswoman Susan Berman in 2000 to keep her from talking to Pirro’s investigators, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday.

Pirro has said she planned to talk to Berman. Durst’s attorneys want to confirm that she had never contacted Berman before she was killed, according to the motion.

Louisiana State Police referred requests for comment to the Orleans Parish district attorney’s office. That office does not comment on open cases or investigations, spokesman Chris Bowman said.

Orleans Parish district attorney’s investigator Jim O’Hern testified at Durst’s bail hearing that he helped Los Angeles detectives get the warrant on which Durst was arrested early March 15, a Sunday. An FBI agent had inventoried Durst’s belongings in his hotel room the afternoon of March 14 and a judge signed the warrant about 2 a.m. the next day, he said.

The affidavit used to get the warrant states that Los Angeles police and New Orleans prosecutors got a warrant, then searched the room and found the gun and drugs, according to a motion filed Tuesday and provided to The Associated Press on Wednesday by Durst’s attorneys.

“However, those items were actually discovered by the FBI in a warrantless search of Mr. Durst’s hotel room, preceded by a warrantless detention and arrest, long before the search warrant was issued,” the motion said.

Agents C. Bender and C. Williams had identified and frisked Durst, “a frail, 71-year-old man in poor health,” in the hotel lobby and should have taken him immediately to jail if they were arresting him on a California warrant, the attorneys wrote.

O’Hern testified that the search was an inventory to ensure safekeeping of Durst’s belongings. Neither FBI policy nor court rulings support such a search, “and the state cannot expect the Court to take this justification seriously,” the motion said.

Quoting a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that “an inventory search must not be a ruse of a general rummaging in order to discover incriminating evidence,” they said, “the FBI agents rummaged through all of Mr. Durst’s luggage and clothing, opened every bag and pocket, and inspected, removed and photographed every item in his possession, down to his pens, glasses and medication.”

If the agents had just wanted to safeguard Durst’s property, they should have just removed and secured it, the attorneys wrote.

They also argued that Durst’s federal convictions — interstate transportation of a firearm while under indictment and possessing a firearm or ammunition while a fugitive from justice — aren’t among felonies that make possessing a firearm illegal in Louisiana.

Rice University Student Turns His Dorm Room Into A Ball Pit (VIDEO)

By now, you’ve probably heard every reason ever to come back to a guy’s room. From watching a movie to checking out his fish tank, the opportunities are endless. While it’s easy enough to turn down a night spent getting halfway into The Notebook before the MO begins, it’s almost impossible to turn down a quick tumble in the ball pit. No, that’s not a double entendre, this college student quite literally built a ball pit in his dorm room.

David Nichol, a Rice University senior is obviously brilliant — and not just because he’s majoring in computer engineering.

The Study Room

The Study Room

Excerpts from “The Study Room”:”You wouldn’t recognize me,” Heather said when I asked her what it was like when she had sex with a woman.I didn’t know she meant. We’d been in law school together for almost two years, study partners for half of that and lovers for several months when I asked the question. Heather was always very open about sex. I knew about her past and her relationships with women. I knew about her childhood, which had been full of horrible, frightening stuff. I knew Heather as well as I’d known any woman in my life, and I was deeply in love with her. But I couldn’t figure out what she meant by, “You wouldn’t recognize me.”I found out three weeks later, on the night we met Ana in a study room at UCLA. Heather was a fascinating combination of fear and confidence. She had been terribly mistreated as a child, told over and over by her parents that she was incompetent, even stupid. Self-doubt and worthlessness had been pounded into her. When she became a teenager something, or someone, helped her find her confidence. It was strong and she used it to build up all the other areas of her life. But that confidence was fully, solely rooted in her sexuality. Now, as an adult, she was at conflict within herself. It was an internal fight between the fearful, self-loathing little girl and the fiercely confident sexual young woman. I had learned over the course of the few months we’d been together that, in the end, the fiercely confident woman always won out. Always.I crossed the large garden in front of the building to an area away from the other students. I sat down on a single wooden bench, closed my eyes and took a deep breath. There was a strong fragrance from the dense honeysuckle vines surrounding me.”You’re girlfriend is beautiful.”There was a slight Spanish accent to the woman’s voice, although I couldn’t place it at first. I opened my eyes to find Ana standing in front of me.”She’s not my girlfriend,” I replied.”You’re joking, aren’t you?”No. We’re in law

Mephistopheles in Your Living Room

When I mention to non-aficionado friends that I’ve been to the opera–most recently, to San Francisco Opera‘s wondrous Norma, by Vincenzo Bellini, with the dazzling, “once-in-a-generation” soprano Sondra Radvanovsky–they rarely say, “Oh, I don’t like opera.” More often, it’s “Ooh, opera is so expensive.” Well, yes and no. There are certainly other ways to see a production than paying for an orchestra seat.

You can buy a cheaper seat or a standing-room ticket; in San Francisco, you can even see a simulcast at the ballpark! Sometimes you can catch an HD-filmed production at a movie house that has good sound, like my little neighborhood theater, the Lark. Occasionally, you can watch a filmed production on TV; for instance, San Francisco public television station KQED recently showed Arrigo Boito‘s 1875 opera Mephistopheles (Mefistofele), filmed and recorded last fall, when I saw it at the War Memorial Opera House. And now, you can see this production on Blu-Ray and DVD.

If you’ve never seen an opera, this is an excellent way to begin: stretched out in a comfy chair in your living instead of sitting upright with a hard-back seat in front of you; table with popcorn and beer (or cheese, fresh sourdough, and wine, or whatever) at hand. Plus, you can stand up when it’s not intermission.

Mefistofele is San Francisco Opera’s fourth DVD/Blu-ray release, after productions of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s Moby-Dick, Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia, and the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. I was lucky enough to see all of them.

With Mefistofele, I was waiting for my photographer friend Tracy Johnston to meet me for a Sunday matinee. It was a fine, sunny day, and Tracy was going to join me after taking pictures at the Folsom Street Fair, an annual, perhaps only-in-San-Francisco celebration. As the organizers described last year’s event, “Dressed in leather harnesses, or galloping with Edwardian carriages and the most fabulous of horses, or in latex and rubber, or in sequins, beads, and feathers, or swinging suspended on hooks, or dancing in the cage, or with the skimpiest of outfits, or with nothing at all, we came together.”

I happened to mention Tracy’s plans to someone and laughed, saying, “So she’s going to experience the widest range of what San Francisco has to offer today.”

The woman arched an eyebrow and said to me, “Have you seen this opera?”

Now that I have, I totally get what she meant. With different costumes, Folsom Street Fairgoers could have populated the opera’s ribald town carnival, complete with a frisky Adam and Eve and serpent, in the first act and the wicked Witches Sabbath, with its well-simulated nudity, in the second. They could have, that is, providing they could sing. In what must have been one of its most fun experiences ever, the stellar San Francisco Opera Chorus, led by Ian Robertson, sang and performed as both the colorfully clad townspeople and the witches and warlocks of Walpurgis Night. Masked and costumed in white, they also sang in the angelic choir that bookends this drama about Devil versus God, heaven versus hell. They were simply outstanding.

The terrific Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov was devilishly charismatic as the title character, and Mexico-born tenor Ramón Vargas a sweet-voiced Faust, the scholar who bargains away a peaceful afterlife to experience the true nature of this life. The dynamic soprano Patricia Racette was Margherita, the village girl Faust seduces and destroys; and her solo as, half mad with grief and remorse, she awaits execution for killing her mother and the baby Faust left her with is heart-stopping.

I would have liked Boito, who wrote the libretto as well as the music, to have dropped the tacked-on Act IV, in which Faust, traveling on Mephistopheles’ magic cape to classical Greece, meets up with Helen of Troy. This gives him a chance to contrast loving a mortal (a tragedy) with loving a goddess (an illusion), but I would rather he had enlarged a bit Faust’s truncated relationship with Margherita. I know, it’s opera; but still.

Then again, it was fortunate Margherita has only two scenes. That summer, while Racette and company were rehearsing Mefistophele, mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, who was set to star in a world premiere based on Stephen King’s 1992 novel Dolores Claiborne (an SFO commission from Tobias Picker), had to withdraw from the production. This was in late August, and Racette learned the new part in time for opening night, September 6. As she said at the time, “The only breaks I’ve had are my performances of Mephistopheles.”

That was just one reason Racette received a San Francisco Opera medal–awarded from time to time to great performers, conductors, and others who have been important to the company–last month. This was at the end of a performance of Susannah, composed and with libretto by Carlisle Floyd, in which a Tennessee town’s small-mindedness affects a young girl, her brother, and the preacher who ruins all their lives. It’s a highly accessible, emotionally engaging, powerful work, and here’s hoping SFO brings it back again soon. Not to mention Norma (preferably with Radvanovsky), which pretty much knocked out everyone who saw it.

Meantime, there’s Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera and Handel’s Partenope this month, followed by Puccini’s Tosca and Rossini’s Cinderella. And don’t forget the DVDs of Mefistophele and the others I mentioned. In fact, Vargas, who is here performing in Un Ballo in Maschera with Dolora Zajick, will be signing DVDs and CDs after the Oct. 19 performance.

How To Decorate A Room Without Putting Everything In Front Of The TV

We’re creatures of habit, and there are few times this has proven truer than when trying to incorporate a TV into our decor. It almost always takes center stage. But just because the majority of people choose to make the boob tube the focal point of a room — 52 percent of homeowners admitted to Houzz that they have televisions in their bedroom— doesn’t mean you have to go with the crowd.

Next time you go to set up a room (or spontaneously feel the urge to move around some furniture), try taking a TV-free approach instead. Not sure how to do that? These focal point alternatives are here to help. And, as an added bonus, they’re pretty much guaranteed to be loads better than some terrible reality show blasting in the background.

An antique mirror that will also reflect light into the room and make it appear larger.

A piece of large-scale art that will spark more discussion than any on-air drama.

Creating Room to Read

Creating Room to Read

The inspirational story of a former Microsoft executive’s quest to build libraries around the world and share the love of books What’s happened since John Wood left Microsoft to change the world? Just ask six million kids in the poorest regions of Asia and Africa. In 1999, at the age of thirty-five, Wood quit a lucrative career to found the nonprofit Room to Read. Described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “the Andrew Carnegie of the developing world,” he strived to bring the lessons of the corporate world to the nonprofit sector—and succeeded spectacularly. In his acclaimed first book, Leaving Microsoft to Change the World, Wood explained his vision and the story of his start-up. Now, he tackles the organization’s next steps and its latest challenges—from managing expansion to raising money in a collapsing economy to publishing books for children who literally have no books in their native language. At its heart, Creating Room to Read shares moving stories of the people Room to Read works to help: impoverished children whose schools and villages have been swept away by war or natural disaster and girls whose educations would otherwise be ignored. People at the highest levels of finance, government, and philanthropy will embrace the opportunity to learn Wood’s inspiring business model and blueprint for doing good. And general readers will love Creating Room to Read for its spellbinding story of one man’s mission to put books within every child’s reach.
