Vanderpump Rules Star Brittany Cartwright Admits to Altering Her ‘Double Chin’ with Injections

From Stassi Schroeder’s breast reduction to Jax Taylor’s nose job, the cast of Vanderpump Rules is pretty outspoken when it comes to plastic surgery. And to add to the list of procedures they’ve received, Brittany Cartwright, who was candid on the show about Taylor paying for her breast augmentation, just revealed a new bit of work she’s had done. The star admitted that she’s been minimizing the appearance of fat under her chin thanks to Kybella injections, after a fan asked her what she’s had done to alter the area.

“Hey beautiful can you please share what you had done to your double chin, I saw a pic of you wearing a band over your head, because I’m cool sculpting,” the fan wrote in the comments section of one of her photos.

Another commenter responded, “I believe it was kybella injection,” to which Cartwright wrote back, “yea it was!”

Kybella, which is the only FDA-approved injectable that kills fat cells under the jawline, is injected into the area six times over the course of six months, potentially removing the look of a “double chin.”

And as one commenter was concerned about burning at the injection site, Cartwright promises that she didn’t experience any “burning or stinging.”

As for her prior breast augmentation, Cartwright’s plastic surgeon, Dr. Payman Danielpour told PEOPLE about the reason behind her procedure.

“She just wanted to basically fill out her breasts,” says Danielpour. “We gave her as big as we could without being obnoxious or causing problems or being too big for her body. She just wanted it to be that when she put her bathing suit on, she had more cleavage and it looked like she had fuller breasts.”

Untuckit’s Aaron Sanandres on Breaking the Rules

Sometimes rules are meant to be broken.
Aaron Sanandres, cofounder and chief executive officer of Untuckit, spoke about building a start-up apparel business in ways that went against conventional wisdom. The brand, initially focused on men’s, now includes women’s wear.
Sanandres was really looking to solve a problem — “I couldn’t find a casual shirt that looked good untucked” — when he and a classmate, Chris Riccobono, decided to start their own company. That was in 2011, with just $ 150,000 in friends and family funding.
As Sanandres puts it, there were a couple of “truisms” that he and his partner never followed. One is how building a retail brand required a lot of capital. Another is about how going into retail is a bad idea given the current “retail apocalypse” backdrop.
“Chris and I did things differently because neither of us did anything in retail,” the ceo said.
The two had to figure out how to survive and grow, but were also aware that they didn’t want to get into the same traps that had befallen other start-ups, Sanandres said. While the company was “lucky” because it benefited from the “tectonic shift to casual,” one big problem after launch was that the web site was

Heron Preston on Breaking the Rules

Heron Preston’s business started with a white lie.
The red-hot streetwear designer admitted that his first independent foray into fashion came when he bootlegged the popular Givenchy Rottweiler T-shirt, reworking it into a deliberate fake by putting the image on a white T-shirt rather than a black one and selling it under the radar through his Instagram post. Since then, Preston has been twisting fashion in a number of unconventional ways that have brought him and his label to the forefront of the popular streetwear movement.
Here, he talks with WWD men’s reporter Aria Hughes about fashion school, pushing boundaries — and where streetwear might be headed next.
WWD: We’re on stage at Parsons where you went to college. How does that make you feel?
Heron Preston: I’m on the same stage where Donna Karan would host these talks with futurists. Now I’m on that stage and it’s kind of trippy. I was a good student because I was excited to have gotten into this school. It was really hard to get into and once I got accepted, I took advantage of all the resources: I was class president, went to all the talks, I really soaked it up.

Vanderpump Rules’ Lala Kent Tones Down Plastic Surgery After Comparing Herself to a ‘Walking Cat-Duck’

The Vanderpump Rules cast rarely holds back. Whether they’re admitting their last hook-up or showing their plastic surgery results on-air, they remain the most candid cast on reality TV. And Lala Kent just opened up about the latter when she revealed why she’s taking a break from getting injections.

Even though she “loves” plastic surgery (and admitted to getting her breasts done) she says she needs to cool off on a few procedures. “I feel there have been times where I completely over-do it,” she told PEOPLE during our “5 Questions” video series, above.

“So I’ve had every part of my face injected,” Kent revealed. “The things I’ve decided to stop doing is the filler in the cheekbones, the Botox above the eyebrow and the lips because I just feel like I’m a walking cat-duck. It looks like a cat and a duck had a baby and that’s me.”

The only places she will get injected now are her jawline, chin and forehead. “But hey, if you like injections and you like plastic surgery I feel like, if you feel comfortable and you feel beautiful, than do you boo.”

All season, Kent has been spreading this strong message of body positivity every time she’s on screen. Whether she’s helping Ariana Madix work through body image issues or pumping up her friends when they were trying on risqué outfits, she’s been spreading good vibes wherever she goes. So how can we channel Kent’s confidence everywhere we go?

“I think just sitting there and going, ‘You know what, this is my body and I love it and I could change it tomorrow or I could leave it the way it is and I just think women are gorgeous,’” she said. “The female body, there’s nothing hotter. So reveal that.”

RELATED: We Tried It: Real Housewives Cast Members’ Beauty Lines

In the video, above, she talks about her most extravagant shopping spree at Gucci, the best item her boyfriend, Randall Emmett, ever gave her (you know it includes something about his private jet.) But the one beauty product she can’t live without is surprisingly less extravagant — a lipgloss from her Give Them Lala Beauty makeup line.

(She actually had the $ 16  “Mistress” shade (available for pre-order) with her while filming this interview!)

Jacquemus Plays by His Own Rules

PARIS — Simon Porte Jacquemus is no stranger to taking a gamble.
He kick-started his career by staging a happening in front of a Dior show during Paris Fashion Week, complete with models brandishing “Jacquemus on Strike” signs. Vogue Paris editor in chief Emmanuelle Alt stopped to see what the fuss was about, and a year later, his work was featured in the magazine.
Since then, Jacquemus has gained a reputation as one of the most talented young designers on the Paris scene, whose name is regularly put forward in the ongoing game of designer musical chairs at major houses. Yet the 27-year-old self-described “son of farmers” continues to play by his own rules.
When Dior decided this season to move forward its show to the first day of Paris Fashion Week, which also featured Saint Laurent, Jacquemus was faced with the prospect of being sandwiched between two powerhouses.
He decided to go double or nothing and stage his display the night before, on the closing day of Milan Fashion Week, when many fashion editors are traditionally in transit — or simply not in the mood for an evening show.
The gamble paid off, as it usually does for the plucky designer, who launched his

Lauren Conrad Shares 4 Simple Rules For Dealing With Pregnant Women

It seems like all rules about touching a stranger’s stomach go out the door when pregnancy is involved. But Lauren Conrad won’t stand for that.

The TV personality, designer and mom-to-be wrote a blog post titled, “Ladylike Laws: 4 Things to Never Say to a Pregnant Woman.” In the piece, Conrad shares some etiquette ground rules. The last two rules are “Refrain from commenting on the size of someone’s bump” and “Don’t touch the belly without asking!”

Regarding the former, Conrad notes that she herself has been guilty of making comments about a woman’s belly size. “Women carry their pregnancy in all different ways, and can be self-conscious about it,” she wrote. “Whether a woman is bigger than average or she’s not showing as much as she thought she would be, keep in mind that it can be a very sensitive subject.”

As for the latter, she wrote, “This one might seem like a no-brainer, but every mama I know has some story about a stranger touching her pregnant belly.” Conrad said she witnessed the phenomenon firsthand multiple times when her best friend was pregnant.

“It happens way more often than you would think!” she noted. “Even if you are a close friend or family member, it doesn’t hurt to ask first before making a grab for the belly. No matter what your relationship to the mama-to-be is, keep in mind that it’s much more pleasant to have someone politely ask if it is OK before groping your midsection.”

Conrad announced on Jan. 1 on Instagram that she is expecting her first child with husband William Tell. She shared a “baby bump” photo on her website a week later.

Happy New Year! I have a feeling 2017 is going to be the best year yet…

A photo posted by Lauren Conrad (@laurenconrad) on

If this latest post is any indication, she will likely be blogging about pregnancy and motherhood more as she embarks on this new stage in life.

Conrad’s other two pregnancy etiquette rules were pretty straightforward as well. “Never ask when someone is due unless you are 100 percent certain they are expecting,” she wrote. “There’s no bigger blow to someone’s self-confidence and body image than asking them if they are pregnant when they are not.”

She also urged readers not to ask married couples when they are going to have kids. “Keep in mind that the decision to have children (both if and when), is an extremely personal one,” she wrote. “You also never know if someone may be privately struggling with fertility or has suffered through a recent miscarriage.”

She speaks truth!

3 Rules For Being A Good Third Wife

By Mandy Stadtmiller

“Marriage … You’re in it for life in theory,” my husband ruminated while recording an episode of his podcast recently as he sidelined to talk about our union, which just reached the 14-month mark. “But you can still walk out. I mean this is my third fucking wife.” His female guest interrupted him, rightfully shocked as to what he just revealed.

“Wait — this is your third wife? Oh my God! Why do you keep getting married? What’s the point of getting married?”

“I just love it,” my husband replied sarcastically before getting earnest. “You fall in love, you stay with somebody, and marriage is just the next step. That’s the way it was the first couple of times. It wasn’t like that with Mandy.”

Related: 4 Love Myths That Are Hurting Your Relationship

Listening to their banter, I was tickled by all the things he was saying (“her smile is one of those light-up-the-room kind of smiles,” “we’re perfect for each other,” “sometimes I’m afraid of her”), but it was that last six-word sentiment that stood out the most. With that sentence, he broke down his philosophy to a successful third marriage as the Rule of Three (as in writing or comedy): In the first two you establish a pattern, and on the third you deviate from it.

My husband’s first two marriages came out of a deep love, but they also came out of something deeply flawed: A sense of obligation. Our own marriage came from a different place: He really wanted it, and the only obligation he had was to his own desires.

So what did I do to change his mind about marriage? In his words, I was the anti-wife. (I myself called it being “unwifeable.”) I am the opposite of wanting to have kids and move to the suburbs. The sex got better over time as opposed to getting worse. Our emotional intimacy grew to deeper levels of understanding as opposed to that creepy sensation of living with your roommate. There’s more honesty, more communication, more intimacy — and zero game-playing.

You might be wondering what my reasons were for being open to marrying a guy who’s been divorced twice. I suppose the same qualities that made me so right for him made him so right for me. I come from chaos: My dad is a blind combat vet. My mom has severe OCD. I understand very well that how someone appears to be on the surface is often never even close to the real story below.

To me, judging someone for being married twice would be like judging my father for how he looked or my mom for how she behaved. It’s an entirely superficial and socially imposed status designation. Failure, dysfunction, and lessons learned are how people succeed in life. To discount someone based on their past failings would be both petty and short-sighted.

But let’s be real, there are still many questions that you need to ask yourself if you are going to become the third wife. Say, are the past wives still involved in his life? Will he drop you when things get tough? Are some people just not meant to stay married — and will they just keep making the same mistakes over and over?

Here are my top three pieces of advice for marrying that thrice-charmed spouse.

Rule No. 1: Don’t get married because you’re with some guy who “needs to be married.”

“In none of my relationships after my second divorce was marriage ever something I aspired to be a part of ever again. Meeting you changed all that,” my husband told me right before he proposed.

But how did I change it?

He fell in love with me precisely because he says I was so different than past girlfriends — and didn’t care about ever getting married again. He knew that I was married from 25 to 30 to my college sweetheart and wasn’t planning on entering the institution again anytime soon. (Which I believe also made me an ideal partner for him. I know how tough marriage is, and why you shouldn’t enter into it without some brutal soul-searching.)

As for him, he made it clear that he wasn’t some “marriage fetishist guy” from the get-go. I remember attending one of his stand-up shows early on in our relationship and hearing him say he was “never getting married again.” My friend whispered to me, “Oh, too bad.” But I didn’t think so. After all, I was over marriage, too. Ironically, that mindset made us both open to the institution again — our negative Obligatory Marriage Disease baggage was in the past.

Only when something is truly dead (like killing off all that peer pressure from friends, family, society to get married) can something new, such as a natural, powerful desire make a commitment of your own volition be reborn.

Rule No. 2: Understand what worked and what didn’t in your partner’s past marriages.

There can be a sense of dismissiveness (or shock) when people meet someone on their third marriage. But a lot of times this comes from a simple lack of understanding — and if you want to be a good Wife No. 3, empathy is your No. 1 priority. You best strive for compassion and emotional intelligence … unless you want to be reading an article by Wife No. 4 someday called “Four Rules for How to Be a Good Fourth Wife.”

In looking at what didn’t work in my husband’s past marriages, we both started analyzing his perspective, maturity, sobriety, self-awareness and experience. He gained these things as he grew older, which makes each marriage easier to understand. He was 20 the first time he got married, and 31 the second time. When he married me a year ago, he was 45.

Marriage No. 1: What worked: They loved each other. What didn’t: They were far too young, he hadn’t gotten sober yet and they both grew up and out of it.

Marriage No. 2: What worked: They loved each other. What didn’t: They stopped being able to communicate their needs to each other and he had a malleable moral compass at the time. (Translation: He cheated.)

Our marriage: What works: We love each other and are grown-ass adults who have spent thousands of dollars on therapy to gain self-awareness and compassion. What doesn’t: We forget to have gratitude sometimes, which can lead to petty fights and resentments.

What saves us: We have 87 years combined experience between the two of us and a whole lot of perspective. Neither one of us “majors in the minor” and we are able to draw upon various lifehacks in order to hit a kind of metaphorical reset button — often.

Rule No. 3: Resist the urge to throw his past marriages in his face.

I’m ashamed to admit I’ve said things like, “No wonder you’re twice divorced!” But it’s something I learned to stop saying after the first few major fights (hey I needed three tries, too!). It’s low, cheap, irrelevant, ugly, off-topic, and poisonous. Ask yourself how you’d feel if someone brought up your failed relationships whenever you fought. I myself am once divorced, and my husband has never thrown in my face a similar admonition like: “No wonder you got divorced!” He knows it only feeds the blech. Don’t feed the blech.

Instead, feed the “firsts”! You may be the third wife, but think about it: You have a lot of firsts with your husband. For us, our marriage marked the first time either of us had an official wedding (he had previously done courthouses, I did a chapel in Vegas). It’s the first marriage in which we’ve both continuously fueled each other’s creativity. And it’s the first marriage in which we’ve both been sober.

You may be the third wife — but if you make each other your first priority, you’re guaranteed to be the last.

The Rules of Life are Unpublished Because They are Constantly Changing

How and why are the rules of life constantly changing? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Dave Consiglio, Chemistry and Physics High School Teacher and Community College Professor, on Quora:

The rules of life are constantly changing because the environment in which life exists is constantly changing.

Many millions of years ago, our ancestors lived in trees in what is now central Africa. Life was good. Fruit was abundant. Predators lived on the ground (mostly), and we were pretty brainy and communicative and these could be easily avoided.

But then the rules changed.

Shifts in climate dried out our environment and forests receded. Grasslands emerged, and our lives became chaotic. We had two options: follow the trees or adapt to the grass.

Some of our ancestors did not adapt. They moved with the forests, staying where life didn’t change much. And they, consequently, didn’t change much. We call them chimpanzees and bonobos today, and there they are, living in what is left of the forests of Africa.

But others adapted. Evolutionary pressures favored upright walking, tool use, bigger brains, the ability to communicate, opposable thumbs, etc. These traits passed on, and others were lost. But every day was different. Species rose and fell, weather and climate changed, relationships between individuals were changed. We were faced with a perpetual race to keep up with the changes around us.

And we still are.

Success today depends on the ability to deal with 2016 life. But 2017 life will be slightly different, and new skills will be heavily favored.

30 years ago, my mother insisted that I learn to type. I have been enormously grateful for this skill. But there will come a time when it is not needed, having been replaced by something better.

The rules of life are always changing because the world is always changing. Tomorrow will be different than today, and so you must be different to succeed.

Prepare to change.

What accounting rules did Germany, France and the Netherlands possess before they adopted IAS? (Germany, France and the Netherlands and their adoption of International Accounting Standards Book 2)

What accounting rules did Germany, France and the Netherlands possess before they adopted IAS? (Germany, France and the Netherlands and their adoption of International Accounting Standards Book 2)

Accounting Honours University Essay In 2000 the European Union decided that all EU listed companies would have to prepare their consolidated reports in accordance with the international accounting standards (IAS) of the International Accounting Standards Committee by 2005. In general, member states can govern themselves but the EU has the power to influence their self-governance. In 2000, after the EU decision, the accounting regulators of each member state were free to decide when they wanted to adopt IAS for their nation’s listed company consolidated reports, provided it was done by 2005. German, French and Dutch accounting regulators decided to adopt IAS for their nations’ listed company consolidated reports before the 2005 deadline (the Germans and French in 1998 and the Dutch in 2001). The purpose of this paper is to examine what Germany, France and the Netherlands possessed, in the way of accounting rules and regulations for their listed companies, before the decisions of their accounting regulators to adopt IAS for the consolidated reports of their listed companies. The motivation behind this purpose comes from the recent book entitled: International Accounting by Choi, F.D.S. & Meek, G.K. (2005). The book details the history behind the current accounting rules and regulations for the listed companies of the above three European nations. This paper aims to expand on the claims made in the book by Choi & Meek. The basic material from Choi & Meek is detailed in the paper, in a summarised form, and is added to with that from other academic sources. This paper also aims to contribute analysis to the material contained in it by presenting a comparison of the accounting rules and regulations in Germany, France and the Netherlands before their accounting regulators adopted IAS for their listed company consolidated reports. This paper will be based on secondary sources of information such as academic articles, research papers, accounting books and online journals.

Universal Elevator Rules to be Posted

2016-01-20-1453328873-8932944-1789412_elevator_sign_on_azulejos.jpg

The other day I was reading emails on my phone while waiting for an elevator that would take me to the first floor to exit the building. I pushed the button and waited alone in a three-story office building comprised of various professions: doctors offices, law practices, a podiatrist and a zit popper.

Now, I’m not afraid to make eye contact or say hello to anyone exiting the elevator before boarding. I’m from the Midwest and we are known as a friendly people. So as soon as the doors opened, I checked the cabin to see if all was clear. There was a woman with kind eyes getting off on my floor, but before I could exchange pleasantries, I saw something flash out of the elevator to my right.

I assumed it was a small dog off his leash, and in that split second, I was fine with it. But when I noticed that the woman on the elevator was not sight impaired, I wondered why she had brought her dog to the doctor’s office. There is not a veterinarian in the building. So instead of reciprocating her warm greeting, I spun around to check out the dog, as I leapt into the elevator. I’m sure my lackluster twirl and sashay was shocking to her, and since I ignored her salutation, she must have thought I was rude or odd. But in one fell swoop, I learned I wasn’t the odd woman out.

Little “Toto” wasn’t a Toto at all. Nor was there a leash on her pet.

Probably because most cats won’t sit still and you can squash their windpipe with a collar. Yes, this gal was either going to a therapist, to get calluses buffed off her feet or to a reading of a will accompanied by her feline friend.

I’m not judging here, but things don’t just fly like that. OK, maybe I was judging, but it made me think why elevators are such odd modes of transportation.

Why is it when most people get in the general proximity of elevators, they behave like middle-schoolers? A veritable wallflower syndrome is bestowed upon the riders without fail. People don’t have to get in the elevator for them to start acting uncomfortable, and a mandated quietness and degree of professionalism is required, as if you are presenting a $ 30 million contract to the board. Oftentimes, I feel too casual and under-prepared.

There’s also an unspoken etiquette for how people are to board an elevator. If there’s more than one person waiting, the one who got to the loading area first has the right-of-way. Unless of course, you’re standing with a chivalrous person who holds the door, and insists the ladies-in-waiting traipse across his jacket over the threshold, and don’t you dare push that button! That would be rude, with a trilled “r.”

Why is it when the public gets in an elevator everyone turns and watches the closing door, with hands clasped or arms pressed firmly to their sides? It’s because we magically turn 13 again. Heaven forbid your elbow should brush into someone. It would be so embarrassing if your arm touched a cute boy!

I’m fairly sure there isn’t a manual explaining societal elevator policies. But if there were, a required directive prior to entering, during the ride, and evacuation plan would be indexed. But where would such a thick document be posted?

Perhaps if there was a television screen on the elevator wall, actors dressed like old-time lift operators could explain proper etiquette.

Hello. Floor please? Now that I have your attention, let’s go over the mandated regulations…

It could be similar to some airlines where the flight attendants are no longer presenting safety instructions. Some airlines have videos that are shown as the plane taxis to the runway. Since the world is hypnotized by electronics, the best way to grab people’s attention is by giving them a free movie. Add a little humor to this instructional video and you would have a captive audience.

This would fix the wallflower problem, too. Imagine how you would only have to focus on the screen and could ignore the people around you without that tense feeling.

… Let’s go over the mandated regulations. First, please keep your hands and other body parts to yourself at all times. Remember this is a no-smoking ride, and cats are strictly prohibited.

Selena Gomez Rules #NYFW: Tracking Twitter, Instagram By the Numbers

New York Fashion Week — or #NYFW, to be more specific — has a reach far beyond the more than 61,000 who shared content on Instagram or Twitter. According to numbers gathered by Pixlee, from Sept. 10 to 15, conversations using #NYFW and #NYFW15 had reached 6.6 billion people across Twitter and Instagram. Instagram posts with those hashtags garnered 37 million likes, and on Saturday alone, the conversation reached 2.1 million people. Of submitted photos, 78.4 percent were on Instagram and 21.6 percent were on Twitter. And the top engagement? That went to @selenagomez, posting about “feeling downtown chic” to Instagram from Polo Ralph Lauren. Even though she said “#imnotamodel #tryinsohard,” she obviously is doing something right; the post has 1,520,829 likes, and counting. (Fellow poster @brooklynbeckham also posted from the venue, but his likes were “only” in the hundreds of thousands.)

4 Office Fashion Rules From a Woman Who’s Dressed Kate Middleton

When it comes to a model for polished, proper, and utterly professional dressing, you can’t find a better example than Kate Middleton. Her position as a royal and obligatory outings require sophisticated, elegant looks, but it’s also a style vibe that seems pretty ingrained in her style DNA. And while the Duchess reps many designers you’ve heard of (think her customized Tory Burch, the Stuart Weitzman wedges the queen can’t stand, and that Alexander McQueen dress), she’s also shown off a few British labels that have been a little more undercover until now.

Goat has been once such case, with designer Jane Lewis offering up chic understated styles that the Duchess seems to love. Up until now it had been relatively tricky to find the brand in the U.S. but that’s recently changed, with the announcement that the label would begin selling at Saks Fifth Avenue. When we got the chance to talk with Lewis about how easy it is to translate Kate’s style into savvy everywoman office outfits, we knew we owed it to everyone who gets a pay stub.

“There’s been an underlying belief that fashion had no place within the corporate environment and that it could diminish our credibility in some way,” she explained. “Fashion doesn’t have to be frivolous. Style is innate in each of us, and it’s what sets us apart from the generic. A working environment is as good a place as any to show off your personality.”

Rule 1: Think about your workplace.
What works at your friend’s office might not fly at yours, and understanding that is key. “Assess your environment and your requirements. Be honest with yourself and audit trends as appropriate,” Lewis said. Once you’ve figured out the essentials that make a stellar outfit for your field of work, invest in some key basics. “They’ll become the foundation of an edited yet versatile working wardrobe.”

Rule 2: Don’t be afraid of color.
“It can be empowering and feminine and is an excellent way to tap into a current trend,” she said, insisting that even the color-averse can experiment with shades other than black and navy. “Mid colors like burgundy, fern green, and dark teal are what I call ‘noncolors’ that are good for people who may feel overwhelmed by strong brights.”

Rule 3: Rely on accessories to update and upgrade.
To inject some new life into office fashion made up of dependable building blocks, add statement jewelry or standout shoes. “One feature accent is enough to update an outfit,” Lewis instructed, specifying that one is indeed the magic number. “One thing at a time is enough. Discretion can make a powerful impression and have enormous impact.” Consider a large cuff bracelet with shortened sleeves that show it off, a belt with color or print, or a pair of playful shoes that peek out from underneath your trousers.

Rule 4: Stay comfortable.
Because, really, what’s the good of all these guidelines if you’re squirming and fidgeting? “Don’t underestimate the confidence and elegance comfort lends you. It’s the foundation of dressing well for your environment.” Ban uncomfortable cuts, pieces you’re always tugging at, and ouch-worthy heels from the office.

kate-middleton-goat-redgrave-nude-beige-coat-2013

Kate in Goat’s Redgrave coat, the first piece she ever wore from the label

When you read her suggestions with Kate in mind, it totally clicks into place that, yup, they’re all lessons that the Duchess has learned and applied. And about that famous mum of two? Lewis is much like any of the other designers Kate’s worn, completely unaware that the royal will be stepping out in one of her pieces (maybe because she’s shopping online?)

“It was a lovely surprise and great honor,” Lewis remembered about the time she first saw Kate in Goat (she seems to be especially fond of the label’s classic, tailored coats).

One Rule to Know Before You Break All the Rules

This article was originally published on riskology.co

I’ve always been an early riser, but I’m not what you would call a morning person. I like the peace and serenity that comes with a sun rise when no one else is awake. I like knowing that when I wake up, I’m guaranteed a hot shower. Lately, I’ve noticed I like getting my daily exercise done early so that it’s out of the way and I can focus on other things for the rest of the day.

Until just a few months ago, I had a day job in the construction industry. Getting up early in that line of work is a prerequisite. On my first day, I was issued an official alarm clock and coffee grinder. If you’re not an early riser, you’re going to become one.

Apparently, I missed a memo, because early mornings at the office aren’t usually spent enjoying the sunrise or improving your health. They’re spent sweating bullets trying to finish work that was neglected yesterday or put out fires that someone else started.

Not exactly my cup of tea, so to speak. I like mornings, but I like them on my own terms.

The Indoctrination

I’m sure you’ve had the misfortune at some point in life of trying to reconcile what you wanted to do with what you thought you had to do. This is exactly the situation I found myself in and it was thoroughly problematic. All these rules that someone else made and I had to follow.

When I was new, I just tried to fit in and do what everyone else was doing. “That’s just how it is,” they said. You show up at 7:00 every morning and leave at 5:00 every evening. It had to be for a reason, right? Besides, I was on an prosperous career track. If I could just get used to this schedule, spending the first hours of every day pulling my hair out in what felt like a incoherent stupor, there’d be years of financial good fortune ahead of me.

This is the part where I state loudly and quite firmly, “Wrong!”

I was fresh to the professional world and wet behind the ears, but it didn’t take too long to figure out why we had this 7:00 to 5:00 rule. Of course, I’ve always been aware that most companies keep set working hours, I just wasn’t always sure why.

Turns out, they had a pretty good reason. Know what it is?

Most employees (in any industry) are completely mediocre and mediocre employees demand (yes, demand!) rules that tell them how to behave.

Setting a schedule that says you show up at 7:00 and leave at 5:00 is an easy way to ensure that average people are at work for an average of 10 hours a day and, if the averages play out, a few of them are productive.

Now, I enjoy sitting around and being unproductive just as much as the next guy, but its not a hobby I care for at work. I like to reserve that kind of activity for weekends and downtime after I feel like I’ve really accomplished something.

At the same time, though, who can kick ass for 10 straight hours? I’m trying, you know, but my bionic brain is still on back order. I felt forced into a position where I either had to completely drain myself every day or adopt this law of averages that just felt wrong.

There’s good news, though. If this is how you feel too, and you’re willing to work a little smarter, you can start making your own rules about your schedule, or about anything at work or in life for that matter.

A Little “Experiment” With Rules

When I realized what kind of system I was in, I knew right away that I wanted out, but I liked my paycheck and I wasn’t really interested in trying to change an entire corporation’s policy.

I’d gotten a lot of praise for the work I’d been doing and it seemed like everyone was really happy with my results, so I decided to do a little test — I quit showing up at 7:00. Yep. I just quit going to work on time. I didn’t do it all at once, and I didn’t just start showing up after lunch, but slowly and surely I started coming to work later and later and doing it more frequently.

And you know what happened? Absolutely nothing! No one even noticed.

You can probably do it too (even though I can hear you saying in your head that it would never work at your job).

Sure, there are some jobs where this kind of stunt won’t work. If you work on an assembly line and all the pieces pile up at your station and break the machine because you’re not there on time, you’re probably out of luck.

But there are far more jobs where it will work. If you’re reading this article between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:00 pm at your desk, then yes, I believe you can do it.

The Secret Formula for Changing the Rules

There’s a catch, though. Are you surprised? There always is, isn’t there?

Remember what I said about average employees needing rules to tell them how to behave? You can’t be one of those average employees and expect to pull this off.

Thankfully, it really doesn’t take much to excel above “average.” If you can grasp this concept (it’s the most important one there is to beating “average”) then you’re well on your way to a much happier workplace:

Success is measured in output of value, not input of effort.

A lot of people think that if they put in the hours, they’ll be noticed and recognized for their effort. It isn’t true. Unfortunately, no one cares how long it took you to complete a job or finish a proposal, or do anything else, really. What they care about is that it got done, it worked, and it worked well.

In fact, the only time anyone is going to care how long it took to do something is when it took too long. And that’s not something you want to be recognized for.

Once you have a real understanding of this concept, you can start using simple productivity tricks to abandon the standard corporate work formula that looks something like this:

(1 hr. of half ass work) + (1 hr. of surfing the net) + (30 min. of frantic work to meet a deadline) = 1 happy boss/customer/client

and substitute it for a much nicer formula that looks like this:

(1 hr. of focused productivity) = 1 really, really happy boss/customer/client

Get it done. Make it work. Make it work well. Consistently nail those 3 things, and you can start changing any rules you want to.

Action is a Revolutionary Act

It’s pretty easy to see how fast you can get ahead when you embrace the reality that people appreciate effort, but they expect results. The funny thing is that this is not a revolutionary concept. When you read it, your first reaction was probably, “Duh!” This is something that everyone, on some level, understands.

But actually implementing it is a revolutionary act. There’s a huge disconnect between those that understand the concept of results over effort and those that actually live by it.

It isn’t easy to do. Most people have been trained their whole lives to do exactly the opposite. They’re even programmed to try to put a stop to it when you decide to do it. But resisting the urge to fit in is exactly what makes you stand out.

If you want to change the rules in another man’s game, you must make yourself an indispensable asset to him. Once you accomplish that, you’re free to make the rules as you see fit and what seems like dangerous behavior to many is, in fact, more empowering to you.

The real danger in this idea comes once you realize you’re tired of playing another’s game. Not a danger to you, but a danger to them. But that’s an article for another day.

Now, over to you. What are your tactics for changing the rules in someone else’s game?

Food Rules

#1 New York Times Bestseller A definitive compendium of food wisdom Eating doesn’t have to be so complicated. In this age of ever-more elaborate diets and conflicting health advice, Food Rule s brings welcome simplicity to our daily decisions about food. We think it’s the one that Michael Pollan outlined a few years ago: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. 5 Fashion Rules Short Girls Should Stop Following

For too long, girls with petite frames have been told what they can and cannot wear as a result of their short stature. Well, vertically challenged fashionistas: The buck stops here. Today, we’re debunking five common fashion myths regarding short girls everywhere. Read on for our styling tips and tricks for how to successfully break these archaic fashion rules once and for all.

petite-kourtney-kardashian-knee-high-gladiator-sandals
Knee-High Gladiator Sandals Will Swallow Your Legs: The key to wearing knee-high gladiators as a girl with shorter legs is balanced proportions. At 5’ tall, Kourtney Kardashian keeps from looking squat in the sandals by showing off her legs in shorts. A tailored romper is a great way to get the look without feeling like you’re revealing too much.

petite-marykate-ashley-olsen-flats
You Can Never Wear Flats: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (5’2” and 5’3”, respectively) prove you don’t have to teeter on your highest stilettos to look and feel dressed up. At this year’s CFDA Awards, the duo opted for flats over heels with their all-black ensembles. Follow their lead and expose just enough of your ankle so you don’t look like you’re drowning in your clothes.

petite-nicole-richie-maxi-dress
Maxi Lengths Will Overwhelm Your Frame: The secret to pulling off a maxidress if you have a petite frame lies in the waistline. Nicole Richie appears taller than her 5’1” frame actually measures, due to the nipped-in waistline, plus a hemline that hits right at the floor.

petite-vanessa-hudgens-midi-skirt
Midi Skirts Are Never Flattering: Since moving to NYC, 5’1” Vanessa Hudgens’ style has been spot-on. Most recently, she championed the midlength pencil skirt, proving to petite girls everywhere that this trend can also work for them. Go for a high-waisted silhouette and pair with a crop top to give the illusion of a longer legs.

petite-miroslava-duma-ankle-strap
Ankle-Strap Heels Will Make Your Legs Look Stumpy: Old fashion rules maintain that short girls should avoid ankle straps, for fear of looking too squat. But check out how Miroslava Duma, at 4’11” pulls them off. The strap on her sandal is on the thinner side, allowing her to reveal just the right amount of skin in a midlength dress.

The Rules of the Game: Artist Ariane Schick’s Latest Oeuvre

2015-06-24-1435109209-7163303-Ariane_Schick_55gansevoort.jpg

“A Throw of Fifteen-Love”, by multimedia artist Ariane Schick, opened Thursday at 55Gansevoort, a project space known for exhibiting renowned and upcoming artists including Aaron Bobrow, Jeanette Hayes and Betty Thompkins. This latest opening comes immediately following Schick’s show, Casual Throws, at gallery Super Dakota in Brussels. While the title of her last exhibition referred to the comfy blankets that decorate the ends of sofas, “A Throw of Fifteen-Love” refers to score keeping in tennis. This serves as a reminder of the reciprocal, interdependent dynamics featured in her work, and perhaps even more so, it highlights the relationship of the work to the viewer, which bounces back and forth, much like the back and forth of a ball on a tennis court.

Like a spectator at a tennis match, a spectator of Schick’s show also looks on from the outside in. All exhibitions at 55Gansevoort are fully visible, at all hours, by peering through the windowed doors. Upon peeking in, one first notices a strip of printed organza at eye level that ribbons the room’s walls, doors, pillars and corners. It wraps entirely around the space, almost decoratively, enveloping it like a present. The continuous flow of images printed on the organza is a haphazard mix of interiors, exteriors and the human form. Gathered from Internet search results and personal pictures, they are lit up by rounded, store bought wall sconces, placed directly on the strip, obscuring some of the images and highlighting others. The sconces are placed at varied intervals, which sets a rhythm for the viewer’s eyes to travel around the room in a continuous loop.

Jeffery: Can you describe the images featured on the organza ribbon?

Schick: The ribbon features a still from the Japanese film Tampopo, in which two embracing characters tip an egg yolk back and forth until its thin skin inevitably breaks. Stills and posters from the French film Maitresse show the protagonist, who spends the film exploring the limits between her two very different personas, in moments of transformation. The still of her in front of her mirror, its bare light in the foreground, is a throwback to the wall sconces in the space. The panel also features images of clothing items found on eBay. A picture of a pair of semi transparent vinyl trousers and figure hugging swimwear are modeled by disjointed, static, headless mannequins, highlighting the fact that what is cut off or not visible is just as important as what is clearly available to the eye.

Other images pull the viewer into a more historical context. These include an inflatable finger by situationist group Haus-Rucker-Co., whose work explored architecture through installations that altered perceptions of space. The image of Elsa Schiaperelli’s trompe l’oeil gloves emphasizes the recurring theme of the boundaries between inside and out. There is a repetitive series of frames of a glass fence-like structure that holds back a hedge. Its green mass spills out over the top, while still visible through the fence’s surface, which reflects the trees and electricity poles that face it. There are images of birds in a cage and a snapshot of flowers with sun glares that interrupt it.

An image of a building that features a large hole through which you can see the sky allows the viewer to slide from outside in. A chest of drawers holding a bonsai tree plays with limits and boundaries. A CGI image of a single pistachio nut shows two shells neatly separated. And finally, the open pages of a book called Silent Back (Dog), features images of puppy dogs’ butts, held open by hands visible in the snapshot.

Jeffery: Can you describe the importance of the sconces sporadically placed on top of this imagery?

Schick: The sconces posit an air of, potentially, but not necessarily, domestic, casual informality. They push the image strip back to the status of a decorative element. They also play up the space, recognizing its needs, acknowledging both its specificities and its commonplace nature. They represent, in various direct and indirect ways, a blurring of perimeters and borders. They place the viewer at the center of a court of images and objects in which their display hovers between presence and absence in order to highlight the viewer in action.

The result of Schick’s show is a site sensitive experience as the wallpaper-like strip flows across the room. The viewer slips between layers of available information as the ribbon beckons the eye to follow the strip in its linear form. Overall, the images project an unreliable feeling and their accumulation heightens this by flattening out and cancelling their singular importance as readable messages. The sconces placed on top of the images interrupt their flow and remove the feeling of the typical ‘white cube’ experience, as they evoke a more residential space. The title, “A Throw of Fifteen-Love”, the linear form of the project, and its minimalistic simplicity, all hark on the experience of rules as a recurring theme in the artist’s work. Ultimately, if Schick’s goal is to put the viewer in a position where they question in what context they are seeing what is laid out before them and ask themselves, “How am I supposed to look at this?” then she has succeeded.

A Throw of Fifteen Love is open June 18th – July 12, 2015, 55 Gansevoort St, New York, NY, 10014, http://www.55gansevoort.com

The New Rules of Lifting For Life

The New Rules of Lifting For Life

A customizable-and realistic-fitness program specifically created for midlifers who want to lose weight, revitalize energy, and build habits for increased longevity. Today’s exercising adults are caught in a bind: Those who take it seriously and work out aggressively end up with chronic aches and pains in midlife because they don’t know how to adjust their programs as they get older. And those who take it easy end up with overfed, underdeveloped bodies that don’t respond well when they decide to get serious about exercise. Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove, fitness experts and authors of The New Rules of Lifting series know all too well that these readers need a program of their own. That’s because they are these readers. Schuler started working out in his early teens. After forty years, he realized he couldn’t do the programs in his own books without lots of modifications. And Cosgrove, a former European champion in tae kwon do, is a two- time survivor of stage IV cancer who found himself with limited endurance and a body that stubbornly refused to add muscle or shed fat. So the authors set out to create a new template for exercise, one that delivers serious results but is also flexible enough to accommodate individual limitations. The New Rules of Lifting for Life offers a six-month plan that balances total-body strength, endurance, mobility, balance, coordination, and athleticism. The workouts are challenging and, in conjunction with the suggested diet modifications, will help readers change the way their bodies look, feel, and perform. And not just temporarily- The New Rules of Lifting for Life allows you to enjoy productive and pain-free workouts for many years to come.

7 Rules to Live by for Those Who Live With Passion

This post originally appeared on BrandMentalist.com.

There are many ways to live life — there is no right or wrong. However, some of us believe in living a life full of passion — a life where you never feel bored, stagnant, or stuck — a life where you’re constantly excited and inspired. Without passion, life seems meaningless and mundane. To live a conventional life where we embark on a traditional job that doesn’t excite us is scary and dreadful. To live by the rules and marry someone boring is a life in imprisonment. You believe that to live is to always stimulate your senses, to feel, to experience, and to never be bored.

Below are the seven rules you live by.

1. Always find out what your passion is.

The first step to living a life full of passion is to find out what your passion is. Looking back to your childhood, you remember so vividly what you were passionate about, what you could spend hours on without feeling lonely, and what you felt proud of achieving as a kid. As you grow up, sometimes you feel overwhelmed with the responsibilities you have to take. But no matter how busy you are, you always find an interest outside of your role at work or your role as a family member. You always find your passion and make time for it. And if you’re lucky, you can successfully turn your passion into a career.

Your passion keeps your heart beating. It gives you room to breathe and space to relax — truly an inspiring gift to your soul!

2. Get obsessed with your passion.

Once you’ve discovered your passion, you give it all you’ve got and get to know it inside and out. Your passion becomes a huge part of who you are — a part of your identity. It is something you feel proud to call “your interest” as it helps build up your self-image and self-esteem. Even if you start out as an amateur or a beginner, you are determined to become an expert in it. You live and breathe it. It is almost always magical when you bump into someone who is as passionate about the same thing as you are. Your eyes light up when you talk about your passion. You feel energetic and enthusiastic about it. Even when your body is tired, your heart tells you to keep going. You can never imagine living a life without a strong passion for something.

You see the world through your passion — this is the only way you can live and the only way for you to really enjoy life.

3. Be open-minded and curious.

You live life with arms wide open and are open to opportunities especially in your field of passion. You try to listen and understand, rather than judge. By being open-minded, you get to learn more and experience more — shaping your perspective to see things from all angles and to find beauty in different things. Your inspiration is fueled by your curiosity. Your creativity is driven by your desire to learn.

You love meeting new interesting people who live with passion and are curious to learn more. The world contains limitless opportunities and the path of discovery just never ends.

4. Be spontaneous

To live life according to plans is to live a boring life. Your definition of life planning is more of a strategic thought-out process that gives you the ability to assess which approach is best. However, you keep your plan flexible. You are ready to jump on the plane whenever you need to. You are willing to say yes to random and spontaneous opportunities presented in front of you. You are not scared to commit to a decision made on the spur of the moment. In fact, it excites you to just jump right into something and see where it takes you.

Jumping out of your comfort zone gives you an adrenaline rush. Knowing that you have the flexibility and freedom to fly and run wild gives you comfort.

Life is fun. So why not embrace it and be a little unpredictable, right?

5. Love fully and deeply

Your passion in life goes beyond just your enthusiasm for your topic of interest. Your passion penetrates all parts of your life including love. You love fully and deeply with a passion. You don’t let it go dry or stale. You always find ways to spice up your love life. Sometimes you feel vulnerable because of this. But it is the only way to truly feel the emotional side of yourself.

Mediocrity and dull are not in your dictionary. It is to love passionately or nothing at all.

6. Be inspiring

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away. — Pablo Picasso

Passion is contagious and the only way to be truly fulfilled is to inspire others. As your passion gives your life purpose and meaning, it would be a shame to keep what you know and what you experience to yourself. Telling your life’s story or showcasing your creativity to the world is a way to pass on your passion. You want to inspire others to feel better about life and themselves. You want to inspire others to do more, be more, and achieve more. At the end of the day, to feel uninspired and hopeless is the worst feeling ever. As you are someone who lives with passion and finds happiness and life’s joy through it, you want to inspire others to feel the same way.

7. Travel

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page. — St. Augustine

Whatever your passion is, there are communities of people who are passionate about the same thing as you. Their perspective on it might be somewhat different. But the beauty of it is to appreciate the difference, to perceive things from the angles you haven’t seen, and to experience things you haven’t done. The beauty of art in a French artist’s perspective might be somewhat different from an American artist’s perspective. The beauty of electronic music to an English producer’s ears might be different to a German producer’s ears.

To travel is to expand the horizon of where your passion is confined.

12 Summer Fashion Rules Made to Be Broken

As the lazy days of summer finally roll around, the last thing we want to think about are rules and restrictions. This season, it’s time to kick back and break free from these 12 sartorial shackles—your wardrobe will thank you.

9-girl-with-curves-stripes

Rule to Break #1: Horizontal Stripes Aren’t Flattering. When dresses, tops, and bottoms fit well, it doesn’t matter whether they come in stripes or solids—find a great cut (like Girl With Curves did) that fits you and any pattern can be a fun, flattering summer go-to.

4-shorts-hema-persad

Rule to Break #2: You Can’t Wear Shorts to Work. Take a tip from Hema Persad—a pair of long tailored shorts with a boxy blazer can be a fantastic choice when you crave a break from skirts and dresses.

2-luella-june-navy-black

Rule to Break #3: Navy and Black Do Not Go Together. Combining shades of blue with black—just like Luella & June does here—adds dimension to an otherwise understated outfit.

5-leather-lovely-pepa

Rule to Break #4: You Can’t Wear Leather in Summer. Try pairing leather shorts with a printed silk blouse for a chic date-night look—Lovely Pepa‘s will take her seamlessly from day to night.

6-kayture-ankle-straps

Rule to Break #5: Ankle Straps Aren’t Flattering. If you’ve always wanted to wear strappy sandals but feel like they make your legs look shorter, skip the mini and try styling them with cropped pants or a midi skirt instead. Kayture‘s outfit proportions here are spot-on.

8-we-wore-what

Rule to Break #6: Bikinis Are Sexier Than One-Pieces. You don’t need to wear a two-piece to drop jaws on the beach—there are so many one-piece swimsuits styles available today that would make the cast of Baywatch blush. Look for a diagonal placement print for an extra dose of curve flattery—just like this one from We Wore What.

7-suede-nette-nestea

Rule to Break #7: Store Your Boots Until Fall. If you can’t resist wearing your favorite fall ankle boots, throw them on in the sunshine with a minidress or A-line skirt. It works like a charm on Nette Nestea.

11-hello-shopping

Rule to Break #8: Wear All Your Whites Before Labor Day. White has become season-less, but it’s all about the fabric that you choose. Wear your boxy linen blouses now and save your white shirtdresses for layering with sweaters when the weather gets colder. Get inspired by Hello Shopping‘s look and try white and ivory layered texture-on-texture.

12-gal-meets-glam-suede

Rule to Break #9. Fringe Is for Music Festivals: Fringe doesn’t need to be costume-y. Look for small, refined fringe details on bags and shoes—like the subtle touch on Gal Meets Glam‘s suede sandals.

3-lainey-khakis

Rule to Break #10. Khakis Are for Dads: Khakis can actually be perfect for a casual date night or dinner with friends. Style them with stilettos and a chic clutch—like Haute Inhabit does. Bonus? Loose pants are super-comfy.

1-agoniiya-sneakers

Rule to Break #11. Sneakers Are for Working Out and Running Errands: We believe in wearing sneakers often—and with pretty much everything. Proof: Agoniiya‘s fancy black-and-gold top goes great with Converse.

10-love-brown-sugar

Rule to Break #12. Denim on Denim: Has anyone out there NOT tried pairing denim with denim? What are you waiting for? Try a smart tailored sleeveless top with summer’s staple distressed cutoffs—just like Love Brown Sugar.

8 Rules for Shooting Naughty Videos With Your Partner

2015-05-29-1432920891-5260648-video_camera.jpg

Thinking of playing a little very candid camera with your other half? Engaging in your own sexual shoot, whether as the star or the director or both, can automatically make things more dramatic and theatrical, even if you end up keeping most of your clothes on or refuse to make any cliched “orgasm faces.” But, without thinking things through, the results can be unflattering, embarrassing, or even publicly humiliating (much more likely results than the empire born out of the butt of Kim Kardashian’s sex tape). So take heed:

  1. Only do it with someone you trust with your life. Or at least someone you have incriminating dirt on so you have something to bargain with should they threaten to release your video to the public.
  2. That said, you probably shouldn’t make a sex “tape” unless you’re okay with it ending up online. You just never know.
  3. You don’t have to look, sound, or act like a porn star or producer to whip out a camera during your next romp in the bedroom. So don’t stress about “dialogue” or dirty talk — just do your thing. The mere fact that you’re recording the act will feel dirty enough.
  4. You don’t have to include your full bodies in the shot. You don’t even have to show anything that dirty. Try a cool angle, like from the head of the bed (but remember, never from below lest you look like beached whales) or a close head-&-shoulders crop: the focus can be on your expressions, your sounds, and the intimacy of the moment. Or shoot everything but your faces.
  5. Along the same lines of less is more, if you have any body parts you’re self conscious about, then by all means use an item of clothing, a blanket, a pillow, dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, or your partner to hide them.
  6. If you’re video camera’s got one, turn on its night-vision feature — it obscures imperfections and creates a funky, sci-fi look. Plus, you can shoot entirely in the dark, which is a tequila-free method of loosening inhibitions.
  7. If your squeaky mattress gives the video a slapstick feel, then cut the sound and replace it with your favorite in-the-mood song. (A million Hollywood directors can’t be wrong.)
  8. To be on the safe side, consider erasing all incriminating evidence immediately afterwards. And no, that doesn’t defeat the purpose: Creating a naughty video together is more about the process than the end result. Plus, if you delete it immediately, there’s no chance that Aunt Mabel will accidentally stumble upon your “art” when she’s nosily scrolling through your camera at the family reunion.

6 Rules For Fighting With Your Spouse

SPECIAL FROM Grandparents.com

If you think avoiding arguments is the key to a happy marriage, most experts would say you’re wrong. “I actually don’t believe in avoiding conflict,” says Dr. Wendy Walsh, author of “The 30-Day Love Detox” and host of Discovery Network’s “Happily NEVER After”. “I’m all about how to make healthy repair. Anger happens, and people who love each other bark sometimes, but they also have wonderful make-up behaviors. Sometimes, little conflict means little intimacy.”

Dr. Terri Orbach, Ph.D., project manager of a NIH-funded long-term study on marriage, agrees. Her study, which has followed a group of couples for 28 years, has found that the couples who don’t have disagreements have not fared as well in marriage. “Four couples in the study that said they never had disagreements in year one, were no longer together in year three,” Dr. Orbach says. “One of the things I tell married couples is that marital spats, conflict, disagreements, are typical. It’s how you communicate and resolve them that’s important.”

So what’s the best way to have an argument? Follow these expert tips.

1. Time it right. “Try not to bring up touchy subjects when you are in a HALT mode (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired),” says Dr. Walsh. Though most couples tend to bring up important topics right before bed, don’t. Instead pick a time when you are both well-rested and not under a time constraint or stress.

2. Use “I” statements not “you” statements. When arguing with your spouse, talk about how you feel as in, “I feel overwhelmed when I have so much to do around the house,” as opposed to pointing fingers at your spouse with statements like, “You never help around the house.” “You” statements make your spouse feel attacked and shut down the lines of communication, while “I” statements are less threatening and keep the dialogue going.

3. Go to bed angry. “As time passes in a relationship, you understand that you will figure it out tomorrow,” says Dr. Orbach, who’s known as The Love Doctor. “Whatever you were arguing about isn’t the be-all end-all.” Staying up all night to sort something out just doesn’t work.”When you’re irritated and upset your brain waves change and you’re not as rational and able to process things. It takes at least 30 minutes for brainwaves to go back to normal according to brain research,” she says. The overnight gives you perspective and allows you to calm down and remember how to fight fair. So go to bed mad, and talk about it tomorrow.

4. Apologize. When a marriage is just starting out disagreements can seem like marriage breakers—both of you are fighting for turf. “But over time, as you’ve been together longer, you have a bigger picture which is a long-term focus,” says Dr. Orbach. “Winning and being right is less important to who we are.” If you’ve done something hurtful to your partner or behaved in a way that was unkind, own up to it. And when apologizing, stay away from “Yes, but” statements, as in “Yes, I was wrong, but you’re to blame, too.” “Using ‘but’ takes away from the sincerity of the apology,” Dr. Orbach says. Instead, take full responsibility and focus on your own actions.

5. Watch your stress level. One way to not make spats as intense or last as long is to lower your stress. “When we are stressed, things bother us more and accumulate more,” says Dr. Orbach. “That means we’re going to fight more and the fight will be more intense.” Pay attention to your own stress levels, and lower your stress by exercising, deep breathing, yoga or other techniques that calm you.

6. Diffuse with humor. Humor can cut the tension and make it more difficult to argue or stay mad at each other. “The key is knowing your partner’s sensitivities and making sure that you’re not making it worse with the kind of humor you’re using,” says Dr. Orbach. If you have humor topics or words that make both of you laugh, go for it. Otherwise, if you’re not sure how it will go over, sidestep it, since it could make it worse.

Her Game, His Rules

Her Game, His Rules

Amanda Bair has a tough exterior and a well-honed habit of using people, traits that serve her well in her career and her shallow relationships with men. Until now. Just as she’s about to take off on vacation, she learns that she’s been passed over for promotion. At a party that evening she meets Kyle, a retired military officer who is in town to lead an outdoor training seminar for a local outfitting company. Depressed about the promotion, she decides that a week in the great outdoors with Kyle would make for a nice vacation and would surely help her mood. She manipulates an invitation from a reluctant Kyle, telling as many lies as necessary to convince him that she’s up to the physical demands. However, upon arriving at the private wilderness site, Amanda learns that she’s misinterpreted a few details about the training seminar. The other participants are not due to arrive for two weeks, and now she’s alone in the woods with Kyle. After spending just a few hours with Kyle, it’s clear that this ‘city girl’ with her couture clothes and fancy make-up has severely overestimated her physical fitness. She quickly reverts to her usual manipulative tactics, and abruptly earns a session over Kyle’s lap, where she’ll learn a few lessons about lies and disrespect with a first ass-blistering spanking. It certainly won’t be her last! From then on, the no-nonsense Kyle gives her the training she really needs: absolute submission to a man. Taking charge, he demands she be naked and sexually available to him at all times, which immediately provokes her anger. However, as Amanda’s rebellious behavior increases, so do the pain and humiliation of her punishments. While her rebellion allows her to hide a long-held sexual secret, it’s one that Kyle will discover on his own. But just as Amanda fully surrenders to Kyle, he abruptly declares that their time in the wilderness is over, and he has already made his decision about their future.

Big Boy Rules

Big Boy Rules

There are tens of thousands of them in Iraq. They work for companies with exotic and ominous-sounding names, like Crescent Security Group, Triple Canopy, and Blackwater Worldwide. They travel in convoys of multicolored pickups fortified with makeshift armor, belt-fed machine guns, frag grenades, and even shoulder-fired missiles. They protect everything from the U.S. ambassador and American generals to shipments of Frappuccino bound for Baghdad’s Green Zone. They kill Iraqis, and Iraqis kill them. And the only law they recognize is Big Boy Rules. From a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter comes a harrowing journey into Iraq’s parallel war. Part MadMax, part Fight Club, it is a world filled with “private security contractors”-the U.S. government’s sanitized name for tens of thousands of modern mercenaries, or mercs, who roam Iraq with impunity, doing jobs that the overstretched and understaffed military can’t or won’t do. They are men like Jon Coté, a sensitive former U.S. army paratrooper and University of Florida fraternity brother who realizes too late that he made a terrible mistake coming back to Iraq. And Paul Reuben, a friendly security company medic who has no formal medical training and lacks basic supplies, like tourniquets. They are part of America’s “other” army-some patriotic, some desperate, some just out for cash or adventure. And some who disappear into the void that is Iraq and are never seen again. Washington Post reporter Steve Fainaru traveled with a group of private security contractors to find out what motivates them to put their lives in danger every day. He joined Jon Coté and the men of Crescent Security Group as they made their way through Iraq-armed to the teeth, dodging not only bombs and insurgents but also their own Iraqi colleagues. Just days after Fainaru left to go home, five men of Crescent Security Group were kidnapped in broad daylight on Iraq’s main highway. How the government and the company responded reveals the dark truths behind th

Bill Maher Calls For Ban On Fraternities In ‘New Rules’

Bill Maher is calling for the end of fraternities.

The host closed out his “New Rules” segment on “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night with a plea to the president.

“New rule,” Maher said. “Before he leaves office, President Obama must send in the National Guard to desegregate American’s last bastion of societal-approved racism: college fraternities.”

Maher went on to compare fraternities to the Islamic State group because of the hazing techniques used by some in the Greek system.

“Since 1970, there’s been at least one hazing-related death every year as pledges routinely endure alcohol poisoning, sleep deprivation, waterboarding, being dressed in diapers, buried in trash, force-fed cat food,” he said. “Jesus, why not just pledge ISIS?”

The 3 Rules of My House

I’ve always been of the mind that the more rules you impose upon a person, the less inclined they are going to be to follow any of them. Whether due to resentment or straight up difficulty with recalling them all, too many rules leads to too much rule enforcing. And when it comes down to it, I just don’t have the energy for all that. So, over the past nine years I’ve put in as a parent, I’ve refined the list of house rules to a simple trio that as far as I can tell cover everything that’s important to me.

1. There is no crying about junk food or video games.

Here’s where I invoke Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own: “Are you crying? Are you crying? ARE YOU CRYING? There’s no crying! THERE’S NO CRYING ABOUT JUNK FOOD OR VIDEO GAMES!” For real, small folks of my house. These are a privilege, not a right. That said, if the answer to that lollipop you conjured out of thin air at 9 a.m. is no (spoiler alert, it’s always no), don’t feign surprise and whip up those Academy Award crocodile tears. The answer isn’t changing and you’re making me consider how I might go about melting every lollipop in a four mile radius just so I won’t have to go through this again anytime soon.

And, son of mine, if Lego Batman is making you cry because you can’t figure out how to use that godforsaken batarang to climb that wall, step away from the game. I repeat. STEP AWAY FROM THE GAME. It’s supposed to be fun. Tears aren’t fun. Ergo, time is up. Additionally, if I tell you it is not time for video games or that I will not let you spend your money on a game that’s completely inappropriate, save the tears as well. Crying about screens, even when I know you’re not all cracked out about them, still makes me wonder if I’ve failed. So just stop. Really.

2. I will take my coffee peacefully.

Most of the time I make it at home. No, I’m not making some for you. You want to help me make it? Fine. Take notes on my ratios. That could actually be useful information for Sunday mornings. How old do you have to be to drink coffee? I don’t care how old you are, you just have to have a job.

Sometimes I buy coffee at various establishments. It does not automatically mean that I am buying everyone’s choice of baked goods, fancy italian sodas or milk in that creepy aseptic packaging which may or may not be lined with mold. I will purchase my overpriced coffee in peace and accept no arguments that it is unfair to you, the poor neglected child with a belly full of fresh, mostly organic food who requires new shoes approximately every six weeks.

This is my only vice. I smoked for a nine-day period in high school until I once actually inhaled the whole cigarette and had to lay in a heap on the living room floor until it stopped spinning… so that’s out. Wine is OK, but it puts me to sleep and I’m sort of pretending that it tastes good. I’ve had four massages in my whole life, I can’t remember the last yoga class I attended and today a really good friend thought I was a fifth grader as I walked across the playground at pick up, if that tells you anything about the level of sophistication I’m bringing to my fashion game these days.

Leave my coffee alone.

3. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

It’s not called the golden rule for nothing. It’s basically your “buy one get the rest for free” statute. You don’t like when your sister messes with your rock collection, so maybe stop playing her ukulele with your butt. You wouldn’t like it if your father and I interjected questions about our tax returns into your endless chatter about Minecraft with your buddies, so how about you stop interrupting the first conversation we’ve managed to have all week? (PS: it’s Wednesday.) You didn’t enjoy that time that delinquent clubbed you over the head for the truck you were playing with at playgroup. So maybe don’t pummel your brother when he changes the words to “Let it Go” to “Let it Poop” for the 65th time. Would you like to be invited to play soccer at recess if you were standing around alone looking bored? Maybe ask that kid today. How awesome would it be if your friend brought enough of your favorite snack with her to share at the playground this afternoon? Let’s toss an extra pack of fruit snacks in our bag in case she likes them.

I’ll never forget one of the first conversations I had with a friend when we officially met. She told me she had seen my family and I at the local bakery where she was working and overheard me tell me son to stop rubbing his grimy paws all over the glass cases. “Hey! Don’t do that. Someone has to clean the fingerprints off of there, and if it were you, you wouldn’t want sticky fingered kids smearing junk all over it a hundred times a day.” Turns out, she was the person who had to clean the junk from sticky fingered kids off the glass a hundred times a day. She appreciated my support.

If my Tami Taylor/Clair Huxtable hybrid momspiration is on point, these two shouldn’t turn out half bad.

How Etsy Changed the Rules & What It Means for Indie Designers

2014-08-25-etsylogolgrgb.png

I’m a conscious consumer. I shop second-hand, I limit my consumption of “stuff,” and I try to keep my purchases local. I believe in voting with my dollars, and I’ve gone so far as to dedicate my career to figuring out what that means.

On occasion, though, when I’m hankering for a new piece of jewelry or a unique gift I can’t find in my local thrift shop, I’ll look to Etsy. If I’m going to dish out the cash on a new item, I know that my purchase has more impact if it goes to the local makers who are working on their craft.

As someone who is directly involved in the maker movement, I’m somewhat embarrassed to say I didn’t pay much attention when Etsy changed its policies last fall. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, CEO Chad Dickerson announced that Etsy sellers could use outside manufacturers to produce their designs. In other words, items sold on Etsy no longer had to be handmade.

It wasn’t until a few months ago, when looking on Etsy for a new watch that I realized the implications of this change.

I had a specific brown, repurposed leather, wrap-watch in mind. I knew the one I wanted was handmade by a seller in Ohio, but I didn’t know his name. Typing in a simple search for “wrap watch” into Etsy, I proceeded to spend nearly an hour sifting through 50+ pages of three-dollar “wrap watches” from China.

2014-08-25-wrapwatch3copy.jpg

My eyes scanned over page after page of items I would have expected to find in the kiosks of Daytona Beach, not on a website for handmade goods. I sat at my computer with my jaw on the keyboard, wondering what had just happened. When I eventually found what I was looking for I purchased the handmade watch, for significantly more than three dollars, and moved on. I didn’t think much more about the experience after that.

A few months later, I met an Etsy seller through Factory45, the accelerator program I run for designers and makers. Among other reasons, she applied to my program looking for business guidance on restoring her Etsy shop sales.

She recently told me, “Last year my Etsy sales tripled in the spring and then again in the fall, so I figured things were still looking good. But in May, my views dropped off to about one-third of what they were in the previous months and as compared to last year. I thought they just dipped because of the holiday weekend and the nice weather, but in June they did not pick back up.”

She went on to explain that several message boards had popped up about similar drops in traffic for other Etsy sellers. When I went on the site to see for myself I found threads with titles like, “Are most of you feeling the low traffic, views and sales?” “Can Etsy stop letting Chinese factories sell here?” and “Your Stuff: Made in China?” with diplomatic responses from Etsy administrators encouraging the sellers “to take advantage of the downtime.” (Interesting advice when downtime could mean the difference between paying and not paying your rent.)

2014-08-25-etsywrapwatch.jpg

Aside from the issue that independent designers are now competing with full-scale production operations, there is the issue of sheer volume — Etsy now has over 1 million shops. When a seller is competing in a sea of 999,999 other shops, the odds aren’t good.

Now that Etsy shoppers have the option of buying from middlemen selling three dollar watches, finding that handmade wrap watch you’re looking for will undoubtedly be more difficult. From the seller’s perspective, no matter how many times they change their “tags,” SEO or refresh their storefront, the traffic just isn’t going to come like it used to.

So what actually happened?

In the fall of 2013, Etsy shifted their loyalty from the maker to the shareholder as it made plans to further scale its business model. How did this change things?

Because Etsy’s policy changes happened at the maker’s expense, many of the people who were once making a living off of their shops are now seeing a fraction of the sales. The difference between Etsy, and let’s say, Wal-Mart just got a whole lot smaller. At the core, Etsy changed its mission. No longer is it a website for makers of one-of-a-kind, original goods. Instead, it has become yet another website for the mass-produced and cheaply made goods that satisfy our insatiable culture of mindless consumption.

So what’s a seller to do?

If you’re an independent designer or maker with an Etsy shop, there are a few ways to try and get your traffic back up.

  • Create a small network of fellow sellers. Etsy offers the “team” feature but going beyond that, find five other sellers who have a similar target market and non-competing products. Work together to promote each other’s shops using your individual social media outlets and outside networks.
  • Narrow down your niche and create very specific tags. “Screen printed t-shirt” just isn’t going to cut it anymore. The competition is too high. Use tags and keywords you know would appeal to your target market and get specific.
  • Guest post on the Etsy blog. The blog run by Etsy is “consumer facing,” meaning the content is written for shoppers. It’s an entire platform where your potential customers could be hanging out. Come up with a few article ideas that would appeal to Etsy shoppers and pitch the editorial team.
  • Move marketing efforts away from Etsy to Pinterest, Instagram and a personal blog. Etsy ads are not going to be as effective as they used to be, so save your money. Focus your marketing efforts on creating compelling content through your social media outlets. Host contests on Pinterest, run giveaways on Instagram and write about the “behind-the-scenes” of your business on your blog.

As someone who supports the manufacturing movement in the USA, I believe that Etsy sellers should be able to scale production when their sales numbers get too high to manage on their own. My issue with Etsy lies in the lack of a discerning gatekeeper.

The Original 13 Rules of Golf Framed Collage

The Original 13 Rules of Golf Framed Collage

Ever wonder where the rules of golf came from? Look no further than this plaque which recounts the 13 Rules of Golf. Back in 1744 to ensure that all players participating in the first recorded golf competition at Leith Links were abiding by the same rules the Gentleman Golfers of Leith soon to become the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers drafted and posted the Original 13 Rules of Golf. Golf like every sport evolved over the years and so did the rules but most of the old rules still apply. Among the rules You must Tee your Ball within a club length of the hole You are not to change the Ball which you strike off the Tee You are not to remove Stones Bones or any Break club for the sake of playing your Ball Except upon the fair green and that only within a Club length of your Ball. The original 13 rules of golf is custom framed in a gold leaf frame with double matting. The approximate size is 20 x 12.

On the Seven Seas: Wargames Rules for the Age of Piracy and Adventure C.1500-1730

On the Seven Seas: Wargames Rules for the Age of Piracy and Adventure C.1500-1730

“On the Seven Seas” is a set of wargaming rules covering the high adventure and low morals of the world of the pirate. The rules cover licensed privateers such as da Gama and Drake, ruthless pirates of the Spanish Main, Blackbeard, the Barbary corsairs, the wako of the Far East, not to mention the anti-pirate squadrons, Spanish garrisons and native warriors from around the world that found themselves at odds with generations of sea-borne reavers. The focus of the game is on boarding actions and the exploits of pirate crews on land, and the rules offer a quick-to-learn, basic game based around individual characters and small units of rank-and-file. Most games will run to some 30 figures a side, although larger games are possible, and tribal forces especially will consist of more models. Gameplay centers around two driving motivations that epitomize the pirate life – Fear and Greed. Cunning captains will have to balance these two elements, instilling fear in their opponents with bloodthirsty reputations, while keeping their own crews in line with the promise of loot and wealth. Captains and crew are not just distinguished by these two ratings, however – skills, characteristics and disadvantages can dramatically alter a character’s abilities, and allow for the development of characters over time. The rules also contain maneuver and gunnery rules for ship-on-ship combat. This is not a game of mass naval actions, but of small, personal duels between determined captains. Caravels, sloops, schooners, native canoes, junks and square-rigged ships up to frigate size can be deployed in the pursuit of a prize… or a pirate vessel. Varied scenarios and a detailed campaign system allow players to develop the stories of their crews, with scenarios determined either randomly, by player choice, or by the progression along a sample campaign path. Elements of a more fantastical nature, such as ghost ships, sea creatures and the strange powers of native mystics, may also be inclu

Ask anyone "What defines unconditional love?" and nine out of 10 people will say, "My dog." So who could say it better than Zelda, a 60-pound bulldog? Eminently photographic and wisely wacky, Zelda delivers her advice to the lovelorn with prescriptions for romantic success in this delightful book, "Zelda Rules on Love." This hilarious book features the "adore-a-bull" bulldog in a new collection of photographs, combined with her humorous take on the world of love. Zelda dressed in a red sweater with a red rose in her mouth says, "To be loved . . . be love-a-bull." Zelda in designer attire surrounded by chic shopping bags and credit cards advises, "When love fails, go shopping. . . . You can always return what you don’t want." In a chapter entitled Memor-a-bull Friends and Lovers, Zelda teams up with her best friend, Baby, to portray all the favorites, including Laurel and Hardy, Zelda and Louise, Tonto and the Lone Ranger, Anthony and Cleopatra, and many more.
