Disney Kids Show Subtly Airs First-Ever Same-Sex Cartoon Kiss On Channel

The Disney Channel aired its first same-sex cartoon kiss this week during the animated adventure show “Star vs. The Forces of Evil.”

The subtle yet groundbreaking moment comes when the show’s characters attend a boy band concert and a diverse array of concertgoers are shown sharing kisses ― including two men.

Check it out in the video below at 1:26.

The kiss is the latest in a long line of moves Disney has made to incorporate pro-LGBTQ messages in its programming, including featuring a lesbian couple on the show “Good Luck Charlie” in 2014. The network also showcased a same-sex couple in its animated series “Gravity Falls.”

The family-friendly company isn’t alone: there are a number of other progressive cartoons for kids currently airing on TV, including the very queer Steven Universe.

Nice move, Disney. Keep the queer visibility for kids coming.

Cherokee Nation Will Now Recognize Same-Sex Marriage

The Cherokee Nation will now recognize same-sex marriage, according to an opinion issued Friday by the tribe’s attorney general.

Todd Hembree, the tribe’s attorney general, wrote in his opinion:

The right to marry without the freedom to marry the person of one’s choice is no right at all. The history of perpetual partnerships and marriage among Cherokees supports the conclusion that Cherokee citizens have a fundamental right not only to choose a spouse but also, with mutual consent, to join together and form a household irrespective of sexual orientation.

The decision followed a request made by the tribe’s tax commissioner for an official opinion on the issue a few weeks ago.

“We were increasingly being contacted by departments in the Cherokee Nation on how to handle certain issues with same-sex marriage,” Chrissi Nimmo, assistant attorney general of the Cherokee Nation, told The Huffington Post on Friday.

Native American nations are governed by Congress, not the federal courts. So the 2015 Supreme Court decision to recognize gay marriage in all 50 states did not legally affect the Cherokee Nation, but Nimmo said the bulk of Friday’s decision was indeed informed by it.

Hembree’s decision was also influenced by historical Cherokee Nation sexuality narratives. He wrote in Friday’s decision:

Our oral history teaches us also that the Cherokee and Euro-American worldviews differed dramatically regarding appropriate gender roles, marriage, sexuality, and spiritual beliefs. Indeed, while the majority of Cherokees subscribed to the traditional gender roles, evidence suggests a tradition of homosexuality or alternative sexuality among a minority of Cherokees.

“It think it’s a really interesting part of the decision,” Nimmo told HuffPost. “Through historical research, we were able to identify research sources that indicate there was some type of historical recognition of homosexuality.”

Hembree’s opinion nullifies a law the tribe passed 12 years ago called the Cherokee Nation and Family Protection Act, which banned same-sex marriage among tribe members.

Though same-sex marriage is still illegal in some Native American tribes, like the Navajo Nation, Nimmo believes most tribes don’t take a stance on it either way.

“I think you will see a mixed reaction [to Friday’s decision] like you do in the American public at large,” Nimmo told HuffPost. “Without a doubt, there will be tribal members and officials who support this and are proud of this, and there will be others … who don’t like it.”

The Cherokee Nation’s legal recognition of same-sex marriage will take effect immediately. Nimmo said Hembree’s decision is “binding and considered legally valid,” though it can be challenged by other Cherokee officials at any time.

“I don’t really know who would challenge it,” Nimmo added.

Supporters of the decision shared their excitement on social media:

Stephen Colbert Destroys Dissenting Justices In Same-Sex Marriage Decision

We have a feeling his monologues are going to be pretty great.

Not even into his “Late Show” tenure yet, new host Stephen Colbert can’t wait to dig into the current events and find the funny.

With the landmark 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday allowing same-sex couples to legally marry in all 50 states, Colbert justifiably tore into the four dissenting justices.

As for which of the judges wrote the dissenting opinion, Colbert said, “I’ll let you guess which ones.” He then broke into a Frankenstein monster impression with an “ARGH, GAY BAD!” thrown in for good measure.

The four judges voting against legalization were Justice Antonin Scalia (gasp!), Chief Justice John Roberts (no!), Justice Clarence Thomas (shock!) and Justice Samuel Alito (what?!).

But Colbert insists the ruling is not great for everyone: “My condolences to gays with commitment issues who are asking their partner IF WE CAN JUST PLEASE TALK ABOUT THIS WHEN I GET HOME FROM WORK TODAY.”

In the end though, it’s great news, even if it took longer than it should have.

“It’s hard to believe that gay Americans achieved full constitutional personhood just five years after corporations did,” said Colbert.

Nintendo Will Allow Same-Sex Relationships In New ‘Fire Emblem’ Game

At last, the powerful warriors and wizards in Nintendo’s “Fire Emblem” franchise can be gay.

Gaming site Polygon reported Tuesday that players will be able to have same-sex relationships in the upcoming “Fire Emblem Fates,” a new entry in the strategy role-playing franchise that made its debut on the original Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. A Nintendo spokesman confirmed this information to The Huffington Post.

“Fates” will be be released in two separate versions, “Conquest” and “Birthright.” Nintendo told HuffPost that each will feature a different same-sex coupling — male in one game and female in the other.

“In the Conquest edition of the game, there is a male character that the game’s player may have his/her male main character marry after they bond in battle. Similarly, the Birthright edition features a female character that a female main character may marry after bonding in battle,” a Nintendo spokesman told HuffPost, echoing the statement given to Polygon.

Having both same-sex relationships in the same game may eventually be possible, since Nintendo says there will be a downloadable component that opens up the content that both versions of the game lack.

For the uninitiated, relationships often play a central role in “Fire Emblem” games. Your characters can make friends and, in the case of the recent “Fire Emblem: Awakening,” hook up with characters of the opposite gender and make beautiful warrior children who travel through time and space to assist you in battle. (There will be procreation in “Fates,” but it’s unclear how this will pertain to the same-sex couples.)

In “Awakening,” you completely customize the main character — named Robin by default — by selecting physical build, facial features, hairstyle, hair color, voice and, of course, gender. Because Nintendo specifically references player-created characters in “Fates,” it seems likely that a similar setup will exist in the new game.

That lends a bit more weight to the romantic relationships. If you’re playing as a female character, maybe you end up crushing on the blue-haired Chrom — which might feel a bit more personal than having two non-customizable characters get groovy together:

However, if you’re playing “Awakening” as a female character, you can’t become romantically involved with another female character. Romantic pairings are exclusively heterosexual in releases prior to “Fates.”

There are many other characters running around in the new “Fire Emblem” who could potentially pair off; but it’s unclear if two of the same gender who are built into the story by Nintendo could get together, or if that’s an option only if one of the characters is the one you create for yourself.

In recent years, video games have gotten better about depicting characters who don’t fit a heteronormative mold. The “Mass Effect” series, for example, has allowed characters to pursue fairly in-depth same-sex relationships. Nintendo’s “Fire Emblem” series is generally more kid-friendly than that, which suggests that — when “Fates” hits next year — younger people may have access to a video game that understands them just a bit better than before.

11 Ways Same-Sex Couples Are Reinventing Old Wedding Traditions

When it comes to wedding planning, many of the standard matrimonial traditions simply don’t work for same-sex couples. Psh, who likes rules anyway? BuzzFeed reached out to Kate Schaefer, founder of H & H Weddings, to provide some insight on how same-sex couples are making their big day different. “LGBT couples are faced with a unique set of challenges as they plan their weddings; there are no rules! None. Zilch,” she says. “This can leave couples feeling overwhelmed, or unsure of what traditional elements of weddings to include. The best way to plan is to do whatever feels the most you.”

Same-Sex Couples Are Less Likely To Divorce Than Heterosexual Couples, New Study Shows

This post originally appeared on Bustle.

By Pamela J. Stubbart

Opponents of gay marriage, this one is for you. New evidence from the Williams Institute suggests that same-sex couples are less likely to divorce than heterosexual couples, so anyone who has ever argued that gay couples are “ruining” the sanctity of marriage, well, it looks like you’re totally and completely wrong. Oops.

According to data gathered and analyzed by the Williams Institute (a research group focused on “sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy” at UCLA), within the first four years or so that same-sex marriage has been legal in New Hampshire and Vermont, just 1.1 percent of same-sex marriages have ended in divorce. If you include the data from six more states regarding same-sex civil unions and registered domestic partnerships, the same-sex dissolution rate per year ticks up to about 1.6 percent of all legally-recognized partnerships. Both of these same-sex splits per year rates are lower than the 2 percent of heterosexual marriages which dissolve per year in the United States.

As the Williams Institute also points out, the number of same-sex couples choosing to get married following the Supreme Court’s 2013 Windsor decision is rising quickly — even in states where same-sex marriage was already legal. This suggests that as public opinion of same-sex marriage continues to improve, more and more couples will be drawn into the institution (even those couples who were previously unsure about marriage), though these couples may or may not be more likely to divorce in the long-run, so continued analysis is required.

Unfortunately, persisting inequality in marriage laws also makes it more difficult for same-sex couples to separate: as a same-sex spouse, you can’t get a divorce in your home state unless that state recognizes your marriage in the first place, which could partially account for why divorce rates are so low.

But as long as we’re talking about positive news, here’s some more food for thought: according to another recent study published by the University of Melbourne earlier this summer, children of same-sex parents may fare better than those of similar heterosexual couples too. So advocates of “traditional” marriages and families, take that.

Virginia AG Mark Herring To Fight Same-Sex Marriage Ban, Reports Suggest

Virginia’s new attorney general Mark Herring is making a major reversal on his state’s same-sex marriage stance, according to The Washington Post and NPR.

Herring will announce on Thursday that he finds Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional, The Washington Post reported.

The move would be going against the position of Herring’s predecessor Ken Cuccinelli (R), who once stated, “I cannot support something that I believe brings nothing but self-destruction, not only physically but of their soul.”

As the Post points out, Herring, a Democrat, will also be reversing his own stance from eight years ago, when he voted against same-sex marriage.

“As attorney general, I cannot and will not defend laws that violate Virginians’ rights,” Herring told “Morning Edition.”

After a review of a case challenging the state’s same-sex marriage ban, Herring concluded, “The commonwealth will be siding with the plaintiffs in this case and with every other Virginia couple whose right to marry is being denied.”

First Same-Sex Marriage Ceremony Held At Fort Bragg Chapel

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina home of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and the Green Berets is opening the base chapel to same-sex ceremonies.

Fort Bragg saw Maj. Daniel Toven and Johnathan Taylor exchanged vows on Saturday. The pair married in Washington, D.C., in August. The Fort Bragg ceremony wasn’t a wedding, which is barred by state law. But the event drawing together more than 100 people to bless the pair’s marriage is believed to be the first for a same-sex couple at Fort Bragg.

Attendees at the Episcopal service included a one-star general and a command sergeant major.

Also attending were Lt. Col. Heather Mack and her wife, who initially was barred from membership in the Fort Bragg Officers’ Spouses Club before the group relented earlier this year.
