Forever 21 said Thursday it is tightening security efforts at its store cash wraps following its disclosure last month of a breach at some of its U.S. stores.
Details of the security breach, which was first disclosed publicly by the company in November, did not include how many stores within the U.S. were impacted or in what states. The retailer said it is continuing to look at whether any of its overseas stores were impacted since those doors run off of point-of-sale systems different from its domestic locations.
Forever 21 does business in 57 countries via a fleet of more than 815 stores.
The company said encryption technology at some cash registers had been turned off in certain cases and malware installed by criminals looking to mine the system for customer payment data. Forever 21 confirmed the malware was able to access cardholder names in some instances but in most cases was only able to obtain card numbers, expirations and verification codes.
The vulnerability in the system occurred between April 3 and Nov. 18 of this year with each store impacted by the breach subject to varying lengths of exposure ranging from days to the entire April-November period, Forever 21 said. The company’s investigation

After President Donald Trump received a ceremonial saber at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly could be heard on an open microphone telling him, “You can use that on the press.”
“Yeah,” Trump replied with a chuckle as Kelly smiled at the commencement ceremony in New London, Connecticut.
The exchange occurred after Trump delivered the commencement speech to new graduates, remarks in which he complained about how he’s being covered by journalists.
“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media,” Trump told the crowd. “No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly.”
The Trump administration has been embroiled in controversy over its ties to Russian officials, with the furor intensifying after reports this week he urged then-FBI Director James Comey in February to drop the agency’s probe into the matter. Comey was fired by Trump last week, one of the move that has prompted impeachment talks.
The White House has denied that Trump pressured Comey.
Kelly, a former U.S. Marine general, introduced Trump at the ceremony. He urged graduates to “tell the truth … even though it’s uncomfortable’’ and others “may not want to hear it.”

The controversial Super Bowl commercial for 84 Lumber about a migrant family crossing the border into the U.S. was not meant to be “pro-immigration” or a political statement at all, the company’s CEO Maggie Hardy Magerko tells PEOPLE.
Hardy Magerko, who took over ownership of her family’s $ 2.86 billion company in 1992, says she is a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and believes that a border wall – which featured prominently in the TV spot – “is a need.”
“We need to keep America safe,” the 51-year-old executive tells PEOPLE. “America needs to be safe so you and I can have the liberty to talk… The wall, I think it represents, to me, security. I like security.”
Hardy Magerko says she personally helped develop the commercial and its striking imagery, but her personal beliefs don’t play into the commercial.
“This came from the heart and I didn’t do it for personal gain,” she says. “It’s not about me or my beliefs or the wall, it’s about individuals… treating people with dignity and respect.”
She adds: “My intent was to show, through the mother and daughter, that through struggles we will do anything we possibly can to make a better place for our children. If I thought the wall was negative, I wouldn’t have had the wall.”
“There were many interpretations, but the message is in the eyes of the beholder,” adds Hardy Magerko, who took over Pittsburgh-based 84 Lumber from her father, now 94. “So, depending on what struggles and what you’re going through… it’s all in interpretation.”
The ad, which features imposing shots of a U.S. border wall, is 84 Lumber’s first Super Bowl commercial and was initially rejected by FOX for being “too controversial for TV.”
The 90-second TV spot broadcast on Sunday featured a Hispanic mother and daughter making the treacherous journey north to the U.S. It cut off before the ending and urged viewers to go online to watch the full story.
The online ad, which is over 5 minutes long, ends with the mother and daughter encountering a wall at the U.S. border (something that Trump has repeatedly promised to build) – then finding a door built with lumber from a contractor, which allows them to enter the country.
The tagline, at the end of the full commercial, reads: “The will to succeed is always welcome here.”
It had a polarizing effect on viewers. Some took to social media to congratulate 84 Lumber for the company’s support of human rights and progressive policies, while others saw it as encouraging illegal immigration into the U.S.
“Of course, you get social media backlash,” says Hardy Magerko. “But there was more positive than negative far and away.”
Thank you #lumber84. Bridges > Walls. Immigrants & refugees are #HereToStay. https://t.co/RBakxF8Qcj#SuperBowl #NoBanNoWall #SB51

And others, were confused (especially when their site crashed after the ad aired).
#84Lumber spot was NOT meant to endorse illegal immigration. It was to remind us that immigrants (legal or not) are HUMAN. #SuperBowl

Doesn’t get 84 Lumber ad that they paid $ 10 million for.

— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) February 6, 2017
“At the core, this commercial is about individuals that truly are scared, whatever that might be, whatever their own journey might be,” says Hardy Magerko.
She goes on to say it was not her intent to use the commercial as a platform to make political noise.
Hardy Magerko prefaces her thoughts on the controversial border wall and her commercial, which received a variety of responses both positive and negative, by saying: “I have no right talking about immigration policy, no right, because I don’t know anything about it!”
Hardy Magerko, who says she “unequivocally” voted for President Trump, says that when she found out he was elected, she had “so much hope.”
“I thought ‘Thank God he has the guts to do what needs to be done,’ and that’s to make decisions,” she explains. “We need someone to make decisions and move forward. He will make mistakes as we all are, we are human.
Rob Schapiro, chief creative officer of 84 Lumber’s ad agency Brunner, echoes her reasoning for the creating this type of advertisement.
“The intention is about opportunity,” Schaprio, who filmed the spot in Mexico, tells PEOPLE. “We view it as a patriotic story. If you think of liberty’s torch as a beacon of light from the land of opportunity, that’s how we viewed that light coming through the door. Exactly the same as a beacon of light, we are a company of opportunity and a land of opportunity.
“It’s a very patriotic message. The flag that this young child creates, you see what that means to the mother and daughter. That’s the beacon of light we talk about.”
Some stories need to be heard. The journey of a lifetime begins 2.5.17. pic.twitter.com/PSAODyj3RL
— 84 Lumber Company (@84LumberNews) February 2, 2017
Hardy Magerko watched the controversial ad play on Super Bowl Sunday with a few close friends in New York, while Schapiro watched from Pittsburgh, where both companies are headquartered. The two had worked closely together since November on casting and filming.
“We wanted to shake things up and I think we did!” says Hardy Magerko, still giddy from the explosive social media response. “During market research, we found that people 40 and younger don’t know about , so I thought ‘Okay… let’s tie in what is going on in the world and, more importantly, with our beliefs and company ideals and .’ ”
She adds, “The message, and what people maybe don’t understand, is that we didn’t mean this with any malice, we didn’t mean this with any sharp tongue or sword. Sincerely. I don’t view the wall as a bad thing. This was a patriotic commercial.”
.@Latinos4PP We will always support the American Dream.
— 84 Lumber Company (@84LumberNews) February 6, 2017
Instead, Hardy Magerko says the advertisement, at its core, was meant to attract new, young employees for her growing business and to drum up new customers while “stimulating” the housing market.
“I believe in youth and being contemporary,” she explains. “We need to surround ourselves with people who will continue to build America and build 84 Lumber, we’re looking for people that are naïve and willing to sacrifice and get into a company thinking, ‘Wow this is really cool!’
“There are no politics at 84!”
Fortune favors the brave. pic.twitter.com/PczcVGjj94
— 84 Lumber Company (@84LumberNews) February 2, 2017
Hardy Magerko isn’t too worried about backlash from the immigration ad (her core customer base is made up of small business owners and contractors), even from those who interpreted it as a stab at Trump.
“I didn’t put much thought into whether we would lose business,” she admits.
“I would hope, being naïve as I am, I would hope they understand I’m not taking a personal stance here. It’s about hope, it’s being patriotic. It’s hope for the future, it’s not knowing but standing together strong for all positives.”

The Denver Broncos got a big lump of coal on Christmas Day when the Kansas City Chiefs gave ‘em a good ol’ fashioned American drubbing ― they lost 33-10, and even my mom was embarrassed for them. But it was a Broncos fan who suffered the worst sack of the game.
With a few seconds left in the third quarter on Sunday, a Kansas City security guard deployed a diving, crushing tackle on the fan as he ran across the field.
During the national broadcast of the game, Westwood One radio’s Kevin Harlan celebrated the sack with a hilarious play-by-play (watch and listen here).
“Merry Christmas, my friend!” Harlan exclaimed, after predicting that the downed fan would spend the night in jail.
Luckily, there are a lot more recordings of Harlan calling play-by-plays when fans take the field. Take the Jets game earlier this month:

Visiting an actual movie theater for the first time in years was a strange, if not relatively unpleasant experience. The snack bar girl itched red welts on her arms that made me wary of seat cushion bedbugs. Movie previews advertised a phone app alerting older people with sensitive bladders when a boring scene came on so they could go pee.
The fact that hatchet wielding, gun toting maniacs have chosen movie theaters as locations for bloodbaths in Aurora Colorado (12 killed/ 70 injured/ Batman/ 2012), Lafayette, LA ( 2 killed/ 9 wounded/ Trainwreck/ July 2015) and Nashville, Tenessee (1 hatchet scraping/Fury Road/August 2015) feels slightly absurd. Mainstream movie theater audience members in the majority of theaters across the country are often the elderly, children and other individuals with an occasional old school fetish for real movie theaters. Movie theaters are no longer locations that seem ingrained in the American psyche. Few people can imagine themselves being bludgeoned in a movie theater, because fewer people go.
Tightening Big Brother style security in these locations will ensure even fewer people go, and movie theaters will deteriorate more. It is an ineffective, knee jerk, band aid reaction to what is hopefully a passing copycat lunatic fad. However, theaters across the country are setting new security measures in stone.
Regal Cinemas recently instituted mandatory bag checks in its 156 theaters nationwide. Showcase Cinemas (owned by National Amusements), in Connecticut completely banned backpacks and packages. Off the charts security measures ranging from metal detectors to TSA scans in movie theaters are being proposed by everyone from legislators to CEO’s.
Tighter security measures may border on civil rights violations, paves the way for 1984 brand mechanisms to be put in place in public spaces and deteriorates our chances of retaining our humanity. Turning public places into fortresses ultimately increases tension and escalates, rather than deters, violence.
The appropriate response to surreal madness is not to match it with more surreal madness. Here are some reasons why….
Three Reasons Tightening Movie Theater Security isn’t the Answer
1) Bag Searches are a Killjoy: There is pleasure left in movie theaters—particularly in art theaters in larger cities that have retained old school style and charm. It’s still possible to sit in a theater and fantasize about being magically transformed into the lusty heroine on the screen, to become transfixed by an elegant landscape, enamored with the amplified echo of ice cubes clinking in crystalline glasses of scotch.
Security rifling through your bags can put a serious damper in the dreamscape of movie theaters. (They also make it impossible to bring bootleg store bought jolly ranchers and sour patch kids through the door.)
More importantly, bag searches just set precedence for more interference. Although airports may be appropriate places for metal detectors, TSA scans and the occasional body cavity search–movie theaters are not.
2) These Responses are Profoundly Ineffective. No axe wielding, gun toting, pepper spray sporting disgruntled American wanna be cartoon villain or psychopath is going to be deterred by a bag search. James Holmes walked out a back door in Aurora to get his weapons and reentered the theater through the same door with them before opening fire. Lafayette’s John “Rusty” Russel Houser had a gun on his person but left and returned through a side door. Vincente Montano, admittedly, did bring his pepper spray and hatchet in two backpacks—but if back checks were instituted, it’s likely he would have found another way.
Doing bag checks is a silly gesture, at best. Movie theater security staff peeking into bags will do nothing to keep weapons out. It will only make patrons more anxious.
3) There are bigger fish to fry here. Ramping up security anywhere a mentally impaired, deranged, racist or psychotic person has gone on a rampage and killed people in the US in recent years would require psycho security in elementary schools, churches, synagogues, as well as movie theaters. Creating more barriers as a reaction to large scale violence is fruitless. Maniacs can slip through the cracks anywhere, and there are no barriers without cracks. Turning ourselves into a well walled country, gives us even less of a chance to address deeper problems and retain our dignity as people. We should not be looking at how to fortify ourselves against gun violence, or mentally ill people running amok, after the fact—but addressing the underlying causes of those issues, first, before the chaos occurs. The fact that we aren’t is sad.

At its core, information security deals with the secure and accurate transfer of information. While information security has long been important, it was, perhaps, brought more clearly into mainstream focus with the so-called? Y2K? issue. Te Y2K scare was the fear that c- puter networks and the systems that are controlled or operated by sofware would fail with the turn of the millennium, since their clocks could lose synchronization by not recognizing a number (instruction) with three zeros. A positive outcome of this scare was the creation of several Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) around the world that now work – operatively to exchange expertise and information, and to coordinate in case major problems should arise in the modern IT environment. Te terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 raised security concerns to a new level. Te – ternational community responded on at least two fronts; one front being the transfer of reliable information via secure networks and the other being the collection of information about – tential terrorists. As a sign of this new emphasis on security, since 2001, all major academic publishers have started technical journals focused on security, and every major communi- tions conference (for example, Globecom and ICC) has organized workshops and sessions on security issues. In addition, the IEEE has created a technical committee on Communication and Information Security. Te? rst editor was intimately involved with security for the Athens Olympic Games of 2004.

What kind of new realities will climate change bring this century? The latest episode in the PBS series “Journey to Planet Earth” explores the rising threat of extreme weather and the effects climate change is already having on the geopolitical landscape around the world.
Narrated by Matt Damon, “Extreme Realities: Severe Weather, Climate Change and Our National Security” also features World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, former EPA Administrator Carol Browner, journalist Thomas Friedman and others.
In the clip above, viewers are introduced to the rising tensions on the border between Bangladesh and India. Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to sea level rise. Climate change, along with economic hardship and other factors, may force an even greater number of Bangladeshis to seek refuge in India.
Unfortunately this problem isn’t limited to the region. It would be “perhaps possible for the international community to deal with” this if it were an isolated incident, Former Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell explains in the video. But “the issues associated with … climate refugees are not going to strike in one place,” he says. “They’re going to strike consequentially around the globe.”
Watch a second exclusive clip below and tune in to PBS at 10 p.m. ET on Monday, December 15 to see the entire hour-long documentary.

In Israel, gates, fences, and walls encircle public spaces while guards scrutinize, inspect, and interrogate. With a population constantly aware of the possibility of suicide bombings, Israel is defined by its culture of security. Security and Suspicion is a closely drawn ethnographic study of the way Israeli Jews experience security in their everyday lives. Observing security concerns through an anthropological lens, Juliana Ochs investigates the relationship between perceptions of danger and the political strategies of the state. Ochs argues that everyday security practices create exceptional states of civilian alertness that perpetuate-rather than mitigate-national fear and ongoing violence. In Israeli cities, customers entering gated urban cafes open their handbags for armed security guards and parents circumnavigate feared neighborhoods to deliver their children safely to school. Suspicious objects appear to be everywhere, as Israelis internalize the state’s vigilance for signs of potential suicide bombers. Fear and suspicion not only permeate political rhetoric, writes Ochs, but also condition how people see, the way they move, and the way they relate to Palestinians. Ochs reveals that in Israel everyday practices of security-in the home, on commutes to work, or in cafes and restaurants-are as much a part of conflict as soldiers and military checkpoints. Based on intensive fieldwork in Israel during the second intifada, Security and Suspicion charts a new approach to issues of security while contributing to our appreciation of the subtle dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This book offers a way to understand why security propagates the very fears and suspicions it is supposed to reduce.

Tim McGraw had an unusual, and uncomfortable, encounter with a fan at an Atlanta show last weekend. According to TMZ, while performing his song “Truck Yeah” at Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood on Sunday, July 13, McGraw slapped a female fan who got a little too handsy and aggressive.
In the video above (TMZ has another version of it as well), McGraw is seen standing in a sea of screaming fans with his ripped jeans, black tank top and signature cowboy hat. At about 44 seconds in, after bending down to sing with the crowd, McGraw tries to keep on walking when something holds him back. A moment later, security rushes over.
According to TMZ, a woman grabbed on to McGraw’s leg and ripped his jeans. In the video, he is visibly upset, gesturing “What the what” with his hands, before carrying on with the show. The woman was indeed taken away by security.
HuffPost has reached out to McGraw’s reps for comment and will update this story once one comes through. The singer hasn’t addressed the incident on Twitter, instead posting the following photo at the end of the night:
What a night! #SundownHeavenTown pic.twitter.com/Ky4oqcVUOz

McGraw is hardly the first musician whose fans have gotten a little too close for comfort.
Back in February, a fan rushed up the stage as Taylor Swift performed in London’s O2 Arena. He was escorted off by security. Beyonce was pulled off stage by an overly excited fan in September 2013, during a concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Wiz Khalifa had a similar encounter in October 2013, when a shirtless man got up on stage while he performed in Florida. The man was immediately tackled by security.
